PURCELL The Complete Fantazias

Fretwork harmonia mundi • HMU 907502

Aa93046c&%)@ ?K Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

The Fantazia for consort of viols is one of the glories of English music, and this unique repertoire, spreading over nearly two centuries, represents the loftiest and most perfect kind of instrumental chamber music written in Europe before the era of the classical string quartet. In his Fantazias for viol, the young Henry Purcell put into practice all he had absorbed in the course of his technical and stylistic training. These pieces are a perfect illustration of his avowed ambition to surpass all his contemporaries. Formed in 1986, Fretwork is a consort of viols based in the United Kingdom. The group’s repertoire consists primarily of music of the Renaissance period, in particular that of Elizabethan and Jacobean England, arrangements of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and contemporary music written specially for them.

Goerne’s Schubert cycle

SCHUBERT Die schöne Müllerin

Matthias Goerne (baritone), Christoph Eschenbach (piano) harmonia mundi • HMC 901995

Hk948 1c(! !@\R Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

With Die schöne Müllerin, the lied ceases to be mere entertainment: the singer has to free himself from the role of neutral observer and identify with the tragic character of the traveler. Matthias Goerne is capable like no one else of donning this costume with the acute awareness that disappointment, melancholy, and death are always at the end of the road. This is the third volume of Matthias Goerne’s Schubert cycle, a series that has already created quite a stir, garnering a Gramophone Editor’s Choice and a Choc du Monde de la Musique, among other awards.

Staier plays Schubert

SCHUBERT Impromptus Op.142, Sonata D894 Andreas Staier (fortepiano) harmonia mundi • HMC 902021

Hk948 1c(! @ [Q Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

In writing four Impromptus that look towards the sonata model and a sonata entitled Fantasie, it would appear that Schubert was trying out all the possibilities of cyclic construction. These experiments in form opened up new perspectives that would further extend the conventional limits of the Classical tradition. All of these works were written within two years of his death and find the composer at the height of his powers. Andreas Staier’s interest in the fortepiano flowered when he discovered the difference in sound and interpretation that results when that instrument is used for playing composers contemporary with it, especially Mozart and Beethoven. He is one of the rare classical keyboard players who specialize in both harpsichord and fortepiano.

Handel’s delightful solo sonatas harmonia mundi

HANDEL 12 Solo Sonatas Op.1

Academy of Ancient Music Richard Egarr harmonia mundi • HMU 907465

Aa93046c&$^%@?K Price Code: 2A19 (2 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $39.98)

Handel wrote the solo sonatas of Opus 1 for the professional musicians of his London opera orchestra. They demand considerable skill and stamina both from the soloist and the continuo. Prominent bass parts give the sonatas a contrapuntal strength and vitality, and Handel keeps the elements of display and purely musical argument in admirable balance in these works. For this reason, they are among the most attractive Baroque solo sonatas and deserve their lasting popularity. Played here by members of the Academy of Ancient Music under the leadership of Richard Egarr, Handel’s delightful sonatas are shown to be true masterpieces written by a composer at the height of his powers.

Phil Kline returns with John the Revelator, his third full length release from Cantaloupe Music. It is inspired by his memories of being a teenager in Ohio and Pennsylvania, what he recalls as, “unforgettable and mysterious beauty, the sound of the strong emotion, unconditional and utterly lacking in malice, that I remember from rural religion.” Sources include Blind Willie Johnson’s John the Revelator, the Old Testament, and American poet David Shapiro. The result is a 21st century mass, featuring world-class string quartet, Ethel, and the six voices of renowned early music vocal ensemble, Lionheart.

In a year of Handel celebration and many new recordings, this is a particularly welcome addition to the discography. Stephen Layton leads the Academy of Ancient Music, the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge and a stellar group of soloists in three of Handel’s beloved Chandos Anthems. Written for the musical establishment of the first Duke of Chandos, these anthems set texts taken from the Psalms, mainly the old version of the Psalter as preserved in the Book of Common Prayer, but also the metrical versions of Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady, first published in 1696. The expressive range of the solos is remarkable and in the choruses Handel seizes every opportunity to create grand effects with modest means.

In the Upper Room is a collaboration between choreographer Twyla Tharp and composer Philip Glass. This new disc marks the first complete recording of the 1986 ballet. The first recording of the work, released on Sony’s Dance Pieces, presented only five of the work’s nine movements. Also, Sony’s disc heavily reinforced the acoustic instruments with synthesized tracks, presumably to artificially thicken the orchestral sound. This new, definitive recording using only acoustic instruments, as the composer originally intended.

The music of Ludovico Einaudi is deeply rooted in the classical tradition. However, the pianist and composer stretches the boundaries of orthodox definitions of the genre and creates music that defies easy categorization. In 2006, Einaudi toured Europe with the popular German electronica artists Robert & Ronald Lippok. These artists’ exceptional improvisatory collaboration is what makes Cloudland such an exceptional recording. The album title comes from a paradise-like retreat mentioned in Amos Tutuola’s novel The Palm-Wine Drinkard. This is not the first effort to merge electronics with classical music. Carsten Nicolai worked with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Carl Craig and Moritz von Oswald injected Ravel’s Bolero with a techno twist. Today, a whole new generation of musicians are as comfortable with a laptop as with classical instruments. Einaudi and the Lippoks have created a masterpiece for this new and growing audience.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSD April 24, 2009 marks the jubilee of one of the rare concerts given in Moscow by Yevgeny Mravinsky with his Leningrad Philharmonic. The Unfinished is worthy of comparison with Furtwangler’s recordings in Berlin (1950) and Vienna (1951). In Tchaikovsky, his relentless vision of the 4th Symphony, in Mravinsky’s repertoire starting in 1938, comes vividly back to life. In listening to it, one is unsure of whether they are witnessing a funeral ritual or rite closer to sacrifice. Praga has lovingly restored and remastered the original 1959 recordings for SACD, and the medium presents these musical treasures in the best sound possible.

We spend a lot of time touring and playing clubs along the Danube, bars that put on live music. This has really shaped our sound, it’s Rock’n’roma! I strongly believe this album leads a new wave of Gypsy music.” Serbian rapper Marcelo cameos with the band on the first track of the CD, “Krasnokalipsa.”

Radio Romanista

Advance praise for Radio Romanista

“The musical equivalent of nuclear fusion, the Serbian band seems to create ever more energetic tunes, upping the ante from their selftitled 2005 debut... Traditional touches pervade the album, co-mingling with urban beats and outstanding instrumental prowess... Sure it’s early in the year, but go ahead and mark Radio Romanista as one of the best albums of 2009.” — SOUND ROOTS

Folkloric music from rural Mexico Festival of San Miguel Tzinacapan Various Artists Ocora • C 561099

File in: World / North America / Mexico San Miguel Tzinacapan is a Nahuat village situated in a lush, mountainous region in the North of the State of Puebla, some seven hours from Mexico City by coach, and half an hour’s walk from the tourist town of Cuetzalan, where most of the business activities of this region are concentrated. The language spoken in this village is related to Nahuatl, a language more commonly known abroad under the exotic name “Aztec.” In Nahuatl, Tzinacapan means “Bat Springs.” As in all the villages in the Sierra Norte of Puebla, life in San Miguel Tzinacapan follows the agricultural rhythms of maize and coffee and the ebb and flow of the fog banks that relentlessly blot out and recreate its landscape.

— THE TIMES (UK)

May 2009

File in: World / Asia / Tibet Soname’s fascinating autobiography Child in Tibet (Piatkus Books, 2007), has sold over 100,000 copies world wide. This book tells the remarkable story of her triumph over adversity, told against the backdrop of a turbulent and dangerous Tibet. Soname was born in the harsh Tibetan countryside during the Chinese occupation. When she was just sixteen, Soname risked death in a freedom trek across the Himalayas, finally arriving in Dharamsala, home in exile of the Dalai Lama. Soname later managed to reach England, where she met and married an Englishman. Her hidden talent was discovered when she sang a traditional Tibetan song at a wedding reception, unaware that a member of a famous band was a guest. Today, Soname has rapidly progressing career and an international touring schedule. Plateau, was recorded in London and Kolkata and features UK and Indian musicians including tabla maestro Tanmoy Bose. The producer is Dave M. Allen who has worked with The Cure and Depeche Mode. Soname composed all the material and sings in Tibetan throughout, her vocals evocative of the mountains and culture she has left so far behind. Tibet’s struggles remain a powerful issue throughout much of the world yet Tibetan culture remains distant and mysterious to most. The emergence of such a forceful, talented and appealing singer as Soname is set to change that.

Orquestra Àrab de Barcelona World Village • 498030

May 2009

File in: World / Europe / Spain Orquestra Àrab de Barcelona is a band firmly rooted in Catalonia, a region of Spain that has a very large Arabic population. Although their music is based on traditional Arab sources, specifically from Moroccan and Andalucian cultures and the Sufi traditions, it is also influenced by world music, jazz and other types of Mediterranean music. But it is the Catalan connection that is the strongest. Leader Mohamed Soulimane, originally from Chefchaouen, Morocco, often speaks to local audiences in fluent Catalan. Furthermore, two of his band mates. Jordi Gaig and Joan Rectoret, are native Catalans. The band exemplifies the fact that Barcelona has absorbed Arabic culture to such extent that it now just another facet of Spain’s cultural kaleidoscope. The band’s new album, Maktub (Destiny), features Paco Ibáñez, Omar Sosa and Sergio Ramos (former drummer with Ojos de Brujo).
