NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS
July highlights on the harmonia mundi label include L’écrit du cri, an album of music inspired by the cries of street vendors featuring Dominique Visse and the Ensemble Clement Janequin (p.5). Hyperion offers up the latest Romantic Piano Concerto Series release featuring pianist Howard Shelley in works by Benedict and Macfarren (p.7). Worthy of special note are a reissue of Bach's St Matthew Passion with Philippe Herreweghe (p.4) and the launch of a new label, RCOC, with a rare Baroque opera by Domènec Terradellas (p.9). On the non-classical front, we celebrate the launch of another new label, Dawn of Freedom. The label's first release, Phat Jam in Milano, features jazz legend Archie Shepp (p.11). Singer Najma Akhtar collaborates with American guitarist and songwriter Gary Lucas on Rishte, a new album from World Village that fuses traditional Indian music with jazz (p.15). Of special note are four more SACD reissues of classic Blue Note jazz albums (pp.12-13).

Handel’s last great published set of instrumental concertos were published posthumously in 1761. Played here on a chamber organ with real-time improvisations and enlarged continuo support, these magnificent concertos (including the beloved “The Cuckoo and the Nightingale”) show Handel at his glorious and compositional best, and allow a concentrated view of his style from the last 20 years of his life.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Channel Classic’s Liaisons series releases are double-portraits. They combine two composers in order to explore more thoroughly their musical worlds, the way they inspired and what they were inspired by, as well as to find their common denominators and bring them closer to each other. This release connects early Schumann to late Brahms, with programmatic and non-programmatic pieces. It provides a fascinating, chronological insight into the world of the 19th Century Germany.

BACH St. Matthew Passion
Sibylla Rubens (soprano), Andreas Scholl (counter-tenor), Ian Bostridge (tenor), Werner Güra (tenor), Dietrich Henschel (baritone), Franz-Josef Selig (bass) Collegium Vocale, Philippe Herreweghe harmonia mundi • HMC 901676
Hk948 1c$&*%@VL Price Code: 3A18 (3 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $56.98)
Originally released November 1999 (HMC 951676 - 794881478620) Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental St. Matthew Passion was first performed on Good Friday in 1727 at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. It is the largest single composition Bach ever wrote, both in terms of length and in terms of instrumental and vocal forces. It requires two choruses, two orchestras, four vocal soloists for the arias and vocal soloists for each of the various character parts. Philippe Herreweghe’s 1999 recording of Bach’s masterpiece features a stellar cast and was a perennial catalog bestseller. This re-issue, sans a now-obsolete CD-ROM that was offered with its previous incarnation, will be welcome to Bach fans everywhere.
“It would be hard to imagine a more beautifully played and sung account of Bach’s St Matthew Passion than Philippe Herreweghe’s.” — THE GUARDIAN

L’ecrit du cri Renaissance, 20th & 21st Century Songs
Hk948 1c(! *@?K Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
The Ensemble Clément Janequin has already explored the topic of ‘cries’ — Renaissance chansons built on a vast onomatopoeic repertory. Now, 28 years after their legendary Cris de Paris, the group returns to the genre. L’écrit du cri considerably expands the geographical provenance of the ‘cries’ performed — from Marseille to Valenciennes — and the program straddles periods and styles with a marvelous sense of wit and charm.
“The outstanding musicians of the Ensemble Clément Janequin bring a freshness of approach and a rhythmic vitality that place them at the forefront of the field.” — GRAMOPHONE

Hagai Shaham (violin) Arnon Erez (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67735
Aa34571c!& #%+U Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
Violinist Hagai Shaham returns with a new disc of music by Leó Weiner (1885-1960) — a much-respected national figure in Hungary, but one who never established the same level of international recognition as Bartók and Kodály. Weiner’s two violin sonatas are the focus of this disc. The first is reminiscent of the Brahms sonatas in mood and structure, but Wiener regarded the second sonata as one of his most important works. The remainder of this disc is centered on Weiner’s works based upon different kinds of Hungarian folk tunes.

July 2009
This recording by the Lay Clerks of Westminster Cathedral presents a full choral and instrumental celebration of the Mass for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This festive performance is intended not as a reconstruction of a known occasion in the early seventeenth century, but as a sort of musical offering illustrating the complex liturgical structures becoming available in a period when the resources for the enrichment of the liturgy were growing steadily.

Howard Shelley (piano) Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Hyperion • CDA 67720
Aa34571c!& @)ZP Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
The piano concerto was popular in Victorian London and was often included in the typically mixed orchestral concert programs of the period. Julius Benedict’s concertos are firmly based on classical models, but they have hints of Beethoven, Mendelssohn and even Rossini in their occasional touches of compositional humor. Benedict’s second and third concertos are featured on this disc. Walter Macfarren had a long career as a piano teacher at the Royal Academy of Music. His only extant work for piano and orchestra is the Concertstück. As always, Howard Shelley and his orchestra breathe new life into these forgotten works, which like all of the repertoire in this series, deserve rediscovery.
“We have learnt from Howard Shelley’s previous contributions to the series to expect brilliant and stylish playing, and he does not disappoint.” — BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE

The music for this recording features the songs of the trouvères. This repertoire is so large that a hundred recitals such as this would not encompass them. The songs describe things such as love-complaints, tales of erotic adventures in the countryside, debates in verse about matters of love, political lyrics, spinning songs, prayers to the Virgin and calls to join a crusade.

Songs of Scotland
Marie McLaughlin (soprano), Malcolm Martineau (piano) Hyperion • CDH 55336
Previously Available as CDA 67106 (034571171067) Deleted December 2007 The Scottish folksong repertoire is quite rich. The fusion of Celtic and Lowland cultures, the nation’s troubled history and an irreverent sense of fun mark many of the songs. What binds together these songs is the beauty of the melodies and the skill with which lyricists like Burns could match new or re-modeled words to traditional tunes. A selection of these are sung here by soprano Marie McLaughlin.

The early trios reflect his rediscovery of Czech folk music after emerging from his self-confessed Wagnerian ‘mad period.’ The grand F minor trio reflects Dvorák’s deep search for harmony between his German and Slavic passions, while the Dumky trio displays a lively, free and beautiful understanding of the Czech spirit. For over 20 years, Guarneri Trio Prague has been a tireless proponent of the slavic tradition.

File in: Jazz “I’ve been in regular contact with Django’s heirs for several years now, in the same way as I’ve been working with Angelo Debarre over quite some time. Nevertheless, my solitary escapades, especially my trips to New York, gave me the chance to play with Brazilian musicians such as guitarist Romero Lubambo or Joyce and Yvan Lins, and this in turn gave rise to a daring wager that I harbored secretly for several months-that of bringing together the timeless melodies of a genius of harmony with the vivid rhythms of the Brazilian repertoire in the bossa nova and maracatu range. My meeting with guitarist Thierry Moncheny and percussionist Matthieu Guillemant, both Brazilian by adoption through their music and their extended stay in the country of the choro, simply reinforced my very real desire to record an album in this direction.” – Ludovic Beier
