Aa93046c&%!^@XN Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
‘Non-standard’ solo instruments have always made their way in the chamber music and concerto worlds through the advocacy of exceptional players. In the last ten years of his short life, Mozart developed a strong predilection for the clarinet, prompted by his admiration for the playing of Anton Stadler. Quite aside from the new prominence he accorded the instrument in two of his last three symphonies, it was for Stadler that he wrote his trio, quintet and, just two months before his death, the concerto recorded here. American clarinetist Jon Manasse delivers an unusually insightful reading of this evergreen work, ably accompanied by the Seattle Symphony led by Gerard Schwarz. The second of Ludwig Spohr’s four concertos for the clarinet is an apt pairing for the Mozart, and Manasse gives the work a fresh and buoyant performance.
“At the center was an absolutely first-rate clarinet soloist, Jon Manasse. He had the taste, the sound and the technique to project this most beguiling of wind instruments in one of its more beguiling repertory pieces [Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto].” — THE NEW YORK TIMES
“Manasse sports a gracious tone, easily glides through the three octaves of the instrument, from the reedy flute registrations down through the gorgeous chalumeau bass.” — AUDIOPHILE AUDITION

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD For its fourth recording, Stile Antico spotlights the work of the great Tudor master John Sheppard. Once overshadowed by his illustrious contemporary Thomas Tallis, Sheppard is now recognized as a composer of extraordinary originality. The program displays his genius across the range of genres in which he composed. Its centerpiece is the great antiphon Media Vita - a reflection on the frailty of human life and the hope for salvation. Stile Antico is one of the most original and exciting choral ensembles today. The group’s most recent release, Song of Songs, won the 2009 Gramophone Award for Early Music and reached the top of the US Classical Chart. Gabriel Fauré was a remarkable pianist who included his instrument in almost all his compositions, but seldom as a soloist. Instead, he preferred to combine the piano with chamber ensembles to produce the intimate atmosphere he so favored. Fauré’s Piano Quartets are among the finest works of French chamber music. With the instrumental formula of string trio and piano, he set out in his own way to follow in the footsteps of Schumann and Brahms. Performed here by Trio Wanderer, joined by violist Antoine Tamestit, these works receive idiomatic performances that emphasize the ‘French-ness’ that makes them unique and special.

Underpinned by an irresistible energy and impelled by an innate rhythmic drive, Thierry Pécou’s Symphonie du Jaguar and Vague de pierre explore the mysteries of pre-Columbian Mayan Mexico and literary painters of ancient China. The Symphonie du Jaguar depicts the cyclic course of time and the trajectory of the sun and in the form of a red jaguar in its journey into the bowels of the earth where it is regenerated. Vague de pierre (‘Stone wave’, a literal translation of ‘Shi Tao’, a Chinese literary painter of the late Manchu dynasty) is inspired by an external source, the writings of François Cheng and François Jullien on art and philosophy in China.

HERBERT Serenade for Strings FOOTE Serenade for Strings, Suite in E Major
London Octave, Kypros Markou Dutton Laboratories • CDLX 7238
This month, Dutton offers eight fascinating new releases in their acclaimed Epoch series. Their second disc of music by conductor Ronald Corp features his piano concerto, symphony and orchestral suite Guernsey Postcards. Next up is a collection of colorful orchestral music by American composer Elinor Remick Warren. It includes two programmatic orchestral suites and her Symphony in One Movement. Dutton’s world premiere recording of Vaughan Williams’ Heroic Elegy & Triumphal Epilogue is a terrific discovery. Much more than an interesting early work, it is a vibrant and haunting score that in its time must have been truly pioneering. More music from the USA comes in three distinctive and tuneful turn-of-the-century works for string orchestra by Victor Herbert and Arthur Foote - including the early serenades for strings by each composer. As usual for the series, all these discs feature spot on performances by top flight artists.

This month, Dutton offers eight fascinating new releases in their acclaimed Epoch series. Their world premiere recording of Stanley Bate’s coruscating third symphony is quite a find. If you like Vaughan Williams or Walton you will revel in Bate’s lyrical and dramatic music. The suite A Little Light Music underlines that you will delight in Christopher Wright’s music, which lives in a world between approachable light music and music of deep seriousness. Extended highlights from Donald Francis Tovey’s lyrical and colorful opera The Bride of Dionysus show it to be a gorgeous work. The BBC Concert Orchestra’s Showtime is a typical presentation of their regular ‘Friday Night is Music Night’ broadcast. Baltic Exchange Choral Works by Praulinš, Einfelde, Sisask & Miškinis
Aa34571c!& $&WM Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
With choral music at the heart of musical life in the Baltics, it is not surprising that the medium has been a central preoccupation for many of their composers. And while there is certainly no such thing as a pan-Baltic style (this recording offers only a glimpse of the choral riches to be found in these three tiny countries) all the composers on the disc share a number of characteristics — a sure-footed handling of choral orchestration, lucidity of texture, a pragmatic use of ‘avant-garde’ effects (shorn of their ideological baggage), a fondness for cluster-chords and diatonically saturated harmonies. Stephen Layton has single-handedly brought many of these composers to the attention of audiences and choirs in the West, and through his sensitive and inspirational direction, has won many fans for this repertoire. Together with his brilliant young choir, who sing this repertoire with passion and purity, he is the ideal guide to this beautiful and enchanting music.

Aa34571c!& @#[Q Price Code: 2A19 (2 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $39.98)
Stravinsky’s collaboration with the violinist Samuel Dushkin was a great artistic success, generating new works for the repertoire as well as arrangements of some of the composer’s most tuneful and popular works. Of these arrangements, Dushkin wrote that Stravinsky seemed, “to go back to the essence of the music and rewrite or recreate the music in the spirit of the new instrument.” Indeed, these are not ordinary transcriptions. As he reduced his orchestral works to their bare essence, Stravinsky rethought every note and chord. In the performing partnership of Anthony Marwood and Thomas Adès, Hyperion has a combination that seems to reignite the original flames of inspiration, creation and re-creation.

Lawrence Power, Britain’s greatest living violist, continues his fascinating and acclaimed series of Hindemith’s complete viola music. This second disc features the solo viola sonatas. These works were all written for Hindemith himself to perform and are thus are of special significance - as near to a personal testament, an intimate soliloquy, as exists in his output. The shadow of Bach lies over any composer writing a solo string sonata. This is clear in the Passacaglia from the sonata Opus 11 No 5, where Hindemith’s ultimate model is unmistakably Bach’s famous D minor Chaconne. This movement is the first example of a form that was to be one of Hindemith’s trademarks throughout his career and it makes the work something of a personal manifesto of artistic ambition.

Aa34571c!&*)#ZP Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
Among the many recordings celebrating the 300th anniversary of Chopin’s birth, this disc will stand out as an historic record of the composer’s extraordinary influence and legacy. Chopin’s unique style of piano writing utterly transformed the way in which composers wrote for and thought about the instrument. Few escaped some aspect of that legacy until the early years of the twentieth century and few pianists have not had Chopin’s music in their concert repertoire. Small wonder that so many composers and pianist composers - major and minor- have felt moved to pay their respects to a musician for whom there is almost universal approbation. A fascinating selection of hommages is represented here. Jonathan Plowright has recently been described by Gramophone as, “one of the finest living pianists; the possessor of qualities that should no longer remain a secret.” His formidable technique and musical integrity combine in a disc which is a must for any pianophile.

BYRD Infelix ego - Byrd Edition Vol.13 The Cardinall’s Musick, Andrew Carwood Hyperion • CDA 67779
Aa34571c!& &(XN Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
The final volume of The Cardinall’s Musick’s awardwinning Byrd series includes some of the composer’s most sublime and adventurous music, drawn in the main from the 1591 Cantiones Sacrae collection. Throughout this series it has become evident that a comprehensive survey such as this shows the genius of the composer in a uniquely effective way. Andrew Carwood describes Byrd as the greatest composer of the age as he writes, “If there is an English musician who comes close to Shakespeare in his consummate artistry, his control over so many genres and his ability to speak with emotional directness it must be William Byrd.” The title track of this volume, Infelix ego, is the crowning glory of Byrd’s achievement and one of the greatest artistic statements of the sixteenth century. This remarkable text, taking the form of a number of rhetorical statements and questions, shows the gamut of emotion from a soul in torment to the joy of release when Christ’s mercy is accepted. It can be seen as a microcosm of Byrd’s sacred music and a fitting crown to this series.

SPOHR Symphonies Nos.3 & 6, Overture to The Fall of Babylon
Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Howard Shelley Hyperion • CDA 67788
Howard Shelley’s enchanting series of Spohr’s symphonies continues to inspire interest and delight in this underrated composer. Spohr’s third symphony is a richer, more romantic work than its two predecessors. The sixth was written in an entirely new form, with each movement in a different historical style. Today we accept compositions which borrow musical styles from earlier periods such as Grieg’s Holberg Suite, but when Spohr pioneered the process, contemporary listeners and critics completely failed to comprehend this concept. But it is in fact a very effective as the styles imitated are filtered through Spohr’s imagination so giving the symphony its enduring fascination.

STRAUSS Eine Alpensinfonie
London Symphony Orchestra, Bernard Haitink LSO Live • LSO 0689
Il2 231c!^*(@]T Price Code: A17 (Suggested Retail Price: $17.98)
SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD LSO Live is thrilled to welcome Bernard Haitink back for his first recording with the London Symphony Orchestra since their internationally acclaimed Beethoven cycle in 2006. In his massive Eine Alpensinfonie, Strauss recounts an attempt to conquer the summit of an Alpine mountain. He infuses the score with numerous instrumental colors and rich combinations of sounds, evoking the images and events that take place on the trek. It was to be one of his final large-scale orchestral works and shows the last great German Romantic composer at the pinnacle of his art.
CONCERT REVIEWS
“Rarely has the long haul to the summit seemed more purposeful. Haitink’s perfect control of the orchestral palette at sunrise and at dusk, as strands of colour rose out of and sank back into the dark monochrome contours, made this performance an incarnation of the music’s own metaphysical struggle and triumph.” — THE TIMES

Il2 231c*%)%@[Q Price Code: A18 (Suggested Retail Price: $18.98)
SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD The Mariinsky label’s fourth release features the acclaimed Russian pianist Denis Matsuev joining Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra for recordings of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 3 and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Since winning the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998, Matsuev has established a reputation as one of Russia’s greatest and most dynamic pianists. He is particular renowned for his interpretations of music by the Russian Composers.
“Matsuev, winner of the 1998 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, has much in common with Vladimir Horowitz: the flaring virtuosity, the range of sonority going from a golden whisper to a mighty roar. But Matsuev seems to command equal reserves of intelligent musicianship and fiery showmanship.” — THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE

For many Bruckner fans, Carlo Maria Giulini’s haunting interpretations with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra still linger in the memory. This live performance of the eighth symphony dates from 1984. Critics at the time found Giulini’s reading to be full of grandeur - melodious and delighting in the details, from the plaintive calls of the oboes and clarinets in the first movement to the radiant and thunderous brass of the finale. Testament is to be lauded for issuing these performances and returning the consummate artistry of this great conductor to the spotlight.

This live concert recording dates from 1973. Carlo Maria Giulini led the Berlin Philharmonic in performances of the Tchaikovsky concerto with the Korean violinist Kyung-Wha Chung, who was making her début with the orchestra, and Dvorák’s seventh symphony. In both works, Giulini once again displayed the energy that powerfully synthesized the form and created a firm foundation for the drive and inspiration of his interpretations, and even so early in Chung’s career, one can appreciate why she became a favorite of critics and collectors alike.

This recording of Havergal Brian’s colossal Gothic Symphony is taken from a 1966 live performance given in the Royal Albert Hall under Sir Adrian Boult, was made in the presence of the 90-year-old composer. Boult recalled, “I used a stick an inch or two longer than usual and it was remarkable how clearly the Albert Hall platform allows even the most distant people to see the beat. There was a moving scene at the close. Many were deeply excited not only by the circumstances, but by the power of the music, and when [the composer] came on to the platform, and the audience stood up to applaud him, it seemed a fitting close to it all. It was an evening that none of us will ever forget.”

On this new CD, Kai Schumacher performs Frederic Rzewski’s work The People United Will Never Be Defeated, a work based on the Chilean protest song, ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!, written by Sergio Ortega a few months before Pinochet’s military coup in September of 1973. “A masterpiece,” says composer Bernhard Wambach. “It is a work that would be unthinkable without Bach, but also without Stockhausen, Boulez and Cage. Whoever wishes to interpret this work has not only to master a text of the highest pianistic difficulty, but must also ‘take a position.’ The pianist must embody a political perspective. Without such a ‘position,’ it is impossible to interpret this work of a committed socialist.”

“Urbane and exotic, surreal and streetwise, and alive with invention and emotion.” — BBC
February 2010
File in: World / South America / Argentina Argentine pianist, composer and bandleader Fernando Otero’s new album for World Village, Vital, is a meditative yet emotionally refractive set of eleven modern chamber music pieces, redolent of new-style tango, twentieth century atonality, sharp-edged downtown jazz, and other sounds Otero picked up at home and on his travels. The opening duet for piano and violin, “Nocturno,” is a limping waltz that appears to depict an insomniac’s midnight musings; it leads seamlessly into two succeeding yet unrelated movements. “Siderata,” scored for six players including a bandonéon, Argentina’s emblematic squeezebox, is an exercise in stillness, like the uneasy peace that so often precedes a difficult decision. Between them, the violin and bandonéon achieve a small universe of sonic color on “Noche Illuminata,” while “Fin de Revision” contradicts its title by continuing to mutate and evolve until the final, wheezing exhalation.

File in: World / Middle East / Palestine Trio Joubran has been breaking musical barriers for over ten years. Brothers Samir, Wissam and Adnan make up the world’s first and only oud’ trio. With their skillful, heart-wrenching improvisations that tell of Palestine, the trio brings to bear harmony and sweetness, depth and joy. On stage, as their eyes meet, their instruments join together to express that which the spoken word cannot. Working here with the great poet Mahmoud Darwich, the group has reached a pinnacle. The trio comments, “Mahmoud Darwich was as sensitive to the notes of our ouds as our ears and hearts to his poetry. We accompanied him in more than thirty shows in Europe and the Arab world. The last one was in France, in Arles, this beautiful city where we decided to begin a common work and where our music would accompany the variations of his voice, in strength and weakness, certainty and doubt, life and death... When he passed away, we decided to realize this project and the accompanying became a tribute.”

Steeve Laffont Chant du Monde • 2741737
Hk948 1c(@*&@+U Price Code: A18 (Suggested Retail Price: $18.98)
File in: Jazz Every time a new gypsy guitarist is presented, the introduction begins with ecstatic praise about his ability to play the guitar with such talent at such an early age. Steeve Laffont was no such prodigy. He worked hard to get to where he is now, thanks in large part to his uncle, Boy Bauer, who pushed Laffont to stick to the Manouche tradition. The immense gaps in his mentor’s knowledge of rhythm and harmony, coupled with Laffont’s ignorance of music theory, forced him to develop his own musical vocabulary. He created new versions of chords and fingerings according to the demands of the music he was playing. Today, everyone’s fighting to record him, and that’s just the beginning of the story. This album attests to the great maturity of a very special artist of rare personality and singular musical talent.

A selection at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival, the movie is adapted from the best-selling novel by Christian Gailly and is the first major film for actress and jazz vocalist Elise Caron, who sings music written for her by Michel Benita. The movie tells the story of Simon Nardis, once an internationally renowned jazz pianist, who for the past ten years has led a more orderly life as a husband and father. All that changes when he walks into a jazz club by chance one evening. He is quickly hooked by the club’s atmosphere and his encounter with Debbie (Caron), the club owner. He then must come face-to-face with the demons he thought he had tamed: music, alcohol and doubts about himself.

“With his subtly interactive but lively trio occasionally augmented by singer Omara Portuondo and trumpeter Mayquel Gonzalez, López-Nussa has produced a highly effective calling-card, with Herencia, for his arrival on the international jazz scene.” — THE VORTEX
February 2010
File in: Jazz Herencia means ‘heritage,’ and this album of Latin jazz draws on a rising star pianist’s roots in Cuba and France. 24-year-old Harold López-Nussa was born into a Cuban musical dynasty - the nephew of famous pianist Ernan López-Nussa and the son of drummer Ruy López-Nussa. Harold is best known for his piano work as part of Omara Portuondo’s band, and indeed the lead female singer of the Buena Vista Social Club appears on his album. López-Nussa’s formidable technique earned him the Laureate prize of the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005, leading to this stylish World Village debut that wanders carefree from the sultry clubs of Havana to the bright lights of NYC. On Herencia, López-Nussa fronts a trio comprised of bassist Felipe Cabrera (most widely known as a member of Gonzalo Rubalcaba’s band) and drummer Ruy Adrian López-Nussa (his brother). It makes ideal listening for fans of Chucho Valdes, Roberto Fonseca and the Buena Vista Social Club.
