NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS
The harmonia mundi label rings in the New Year with discs from two excellent ongoing series — volume five of Matthias Goerne’s Schubert Edition, Nacht und Träume, (p.4) and volume two of Kristian Bezuidenhout’s Mozart keyboard music cycle (p.5). Also from the label are Trio Wanderer’s moving new recording of Smetana and Liszt trios (p.3), and J.S. Bach’s The Art of Fugue (p.6) played by the always inventive Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. Hyperion offers the final volume in Lawrence Power’s Hindemith series (p.17) while LSO Live launches Sir Colin Davis’ new cycle of Nielsen’s symphonies (p.22). Onyx welcomes 2011 with RimskyKorsakov’s Scheherazade and Russian Easter Festival Overture (p.23) with Charles Dutoit and his new orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic. Also featured on Onyx is James Ehnes’s recording of Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (p.25) with Vladimir Ashkenazy and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Also of note this month is the launch of Helicon, the label of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (p.16) and on the non-classical side, the release of five more titles on the brand-new SmallsLIVE jazz label.

SMETANA Piano Trio LISZT Elegies
Trio Wanderer harmonia mundi • HMC 902060
Hk948 1c(*#)@ZP Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
This resolutely elegiac disc offers an opportunity to discover, through their chamber music, the dark side of two composers who are not often associated. Smetana’s primary purpose was to give utterance to a cry of pain at his daughter’s death through the medium of the piano trio. In the Liszt pieces, elegies and funeral gondolas remind us of the deeply human and tormented nature of a composer haunted by death and who, more than any other, was capable of expressing its icy smile. The Trio Wanderer realize all this in deeply moving performances.

The latest release in harmonia mundi’s Matthias Goerne Schubert Edition features a selection of songs on the topics of Nacht und Träume (night and dreams), and the connection between them and the oblivion of death. Poems by Rßckert, Schiller and Shakespeare combine with Schubert’s uncanny word painting to create a recital of deep emotional weight and intensity.

Hk948 1c(*@*@?K Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
“One of the most exciting period-instrument ensembles.” — AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE Since Bach was more than cryptic in indicating the instrumentation of what is often regarded as his musical testament, The Art of Fugue has been subjected to an infinite variety of arrangements for all sorts of instruments. This recording follows a series of performances in which the musicians of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin tested a highly unusual concept: rather than play uniformly one after the other the contrapuncti and canons that Bach left us, they have made great efforts to diversify both the instrumentarium and the macrostructure - to the point where we end up, to our delight, experiencing their interpretation as an exciting musical game for several players.

When composing for choir, Sven-David Sandström (1942–) does not hold back in terms of expression or technical demands. This contributes toward a powerfully emotional tonal language, to which the ‘Nordic sound’ of the Swedish Radio Choir is perfectly suited. Composer and choir have worked together for years and their close relationship is evident in the excellent performances heard here. Channel’s usual superb multi-channel recording provides the perfect ambience to allow the music to speak.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD In his extensive liner notes, based on many letters and historical documents, Gary Cooperwonders why Beethoven chose to continue composing after the onset of deafness. He writes, “I cannot imagine that I am alone in feeling both puzzled & amazed by this, as well as gratitude that he did so, since many of his very finest, most sublime works stem from this later period. The key word here is imagination: while we imagine Beethoven should be pitied, I also imagine he pitied others since, through deafness, he was no longer prey to the prosaic nature of general conversation which he abhorred above all else; and in this new-found world of profound silence, his fecund imagination created nothing but unadulterated music, without reference to anyone but himself, and his maker.”

This significant historical recording follows on from First Hand’s acclaimed first release this series. All the Schumann symphonies and the complete Berlioz overtures – some receiving their CD debuts - are presented here in a fabulously packaged three disc set. These 1956 Nixa-Westminster recordings have been faithfully remastered at Abbey Road Studios from original analog tapes held in the EMI and Universal archives. The sound quality is quite astonishing, especially considering they were made over fifty years ago. Sir Adrian Boult is featured, conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra in works he would never return to again in the studio.

This exceptional production features Gounod’s largely forgotten o p e r a Mi re i l l e . Performed at the Opéra National de Paris, it was a great triumph for conductor Marc Minkowski and attracted more than a million viewers when broadcast on French television. In 1859, the young Provençal poet Fredéric Mistral wrote Miréio, a vast epic love poem. Gounod read Mireille shortly after publication and went to SaintRémy de Provence to meet Mistral. Gounod was charmed by the originality of the work, the story being much less contrived than many of those on the operatic stage at the time. The opera has had a difficult career and was revised and altered several times. In 1939, Guy Ferrant and Henri Busser, disciples of Gounod, restored the work to its original five acts. There is no competition on either DVD or Blu-Ray.

Vi o l i s t L a w re n c e Pow e r’s revelatory Hindemith series concludes with this disc of music for viola and orchestra. Throughout the series, Power’s vivid and eloquent performances have left critics and the listening public with no doubt that the somewhat ‘difficult’ reputation of the composer is ill-deserved. The works recorded here include Der Schwanendreher, Hindemith’s only concerto for viola and full orchestra. Also included is Trauermusik, one of Hindemith’s most celebrated works, written (in haste) especially for a BBC broadcast of his music. King George V had died the day before and funeral music had to replace the planned program. It is a shining example of an ‘occasional composition’ that far transcends its occasion and makes a distinct contribution to the general repertoire.

PEETERS Organ Music
Flemish composer-organist Flor Peeters, organist of St Rombout’s Cathedral in Mechelen, was celebrated in his lifetime with a very successful concert career. Trained as a Catholic church musician, Gregorian chant and the medieval modes remained a lifelong inspiration for his music. Peeters was an almost exact contemporary of Maurice Duruflé, who shared his love of plainsong. But where Duruflé created impressionist soundscapes from his modal language, Peeters preferred sharper contours and brighter colors — Van Gogh, perhaps, compared with Duruflé’s Monet. This disc includes a wide selection of his works for organ.

The latest disc from the Brabant Ensemble under their director Stephen Rice features the extraordinary compositional gifts of Clemens non Papa and his Requiem and a selection of motets on a pentitential theme. Despite the popularity of the composer’s music during his lifetime, Clemens is a somewhat marginal figure today and many of these motets have never been recorded before. Yet, listening to this music today, one is immediately enthralled by its opulence and harmonic lushness.

Previously Available as CDA 66875 (034571168753) Deleted August 2008 In the eighteenth century, the cantata was considered to be the supreme test of a composer’s artistry. On this disc, three fine examples by Alessandro Scarlatti are joined by settings of the Salve regina by Domenico Scarlatti (Alessandro’s sixth son) and Johann Adolf Hasse (a pupil). The work by Hasse is distinctly operatic with florid vocal and instrumental lines, and the younger Scarlatti similarly finds himself drawn away from religious deference to a more flamboyant style.

Il2 231c!^($@?K Price Code: A17 (Suggested Retail Price: $17.98)
SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Despite having been an admirer of the music of Danish composer Carl Nielsen for many years, Sir Colin Davis has rarely conducted any of his works. Now, at the age of 83, Sir Colin embarks on a complete cycle of the composer’s symphonies. Although Nielsen is frequently compared to his near contemporary Jean Sibelius, each composer’s music is equally individual. Both were celebrated symphonists, but used the potential of an orchestra in different ways. Despite giving titles to the majority of his symphonies, Nielsen was often vague about the specific themes for each work. However his music is always direct, dynamic and lyrical. Sir Colin’s traversal of the symphonies began in concert in 2009. He will conduct the remaining symphonies in 2011 with two further LSO Live releases following in 2012.

Spectral Strands

All Zones; 57 minutes Viola virtuoso Garth Knox, in concert with well-known video artist Brian O’Reilly, created Spectral Strands - an unique audiovisual program that features compositions by Giacinto Scelsi, Salvatore Sciarrino, Gérard Grisey, Michael Edwards and Kaija Saariaho. Although the rainbow is a familiar object, the discovery that ordinary light can be split into a spectacular spectrum of color remains a source of wonder. In ‘spectral music’ same concept is been applied to sound, and the resulting sound colors, obtained with the help of electronics, are no less spectacular and have excited a whole generation of composers.

A tendency to focus on internal processes has emerged in the music of the last few decades. This disc features compositions on that theme by Mark Andre, Kaija Saariaho and Ian Willcock. Andre was seeking existential sonic situations on his path “toward the inside” (or nach innen, to quote the written-out title of his piece “ni”). Like Andre, Saariaho has also delved into the internal nature of sound. Her rich variety of spectral harmonies tells an old story in a new way: a violin concerto that portrays the legend of the grail. Willcock’s piece visits the discoverer of the unconscious, Sigmund Freud, on his deathbed. Freud’s glimpses of the “inside” showed that sometimes there is more to be found there than the truth.

January 2011
File in: World / Morocco The Master Musicians of Jajouka hail from a village near Ksar-elKebir in the Ahl Srif mountains of northern Morocco. Jajouka is home to Sufi trance musicians who maintain one of the oldest and most unique musical traditions known on the planet. After many years of dedicated training, the musicians finally become ‘Malims’ or Masters. They possess baraka, the blessing of Allah, which gives them the power to heal and the endurance required to play some of the most intense and complex music ever written. Led today by Bachir Attar, the Master Musicians of Jajouka are most famous for their connections with the Beat Generation (Burroughs famously dubbed them “A 4,000 year old rock band”) and Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones, who introduced the unique sound of the Master Musicians of Jajouka to much of the Western world. The Source was produced by Brian Jones a month before his death in 1969. The band has subsequently recorded several unforgettable albums on their own and has been featured on albums by Ornette Coleman, the Rolling Stones, Randy Weston, Maceo Parker, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. The music on The Source manifests the musical and ritual force of a local, influential and endless art.
