Conductor and keyboard virtuoso Richard Egarr returns to the spotlight this month with a new album for harmonia mundi of music by Christopher Gibbons - an unjustly obscure English composer from the Renaissance who just happens to be the son of the famous Orlando Gibbons (p.9). Also on harmonia mundi, Spain’s Cuarteto Casals plays Schubert on a new disc of quartets that demonstrates two very different facets of the composer’s output (p.7). Alia Vox offers another lavish, hardcover production featuring Jordi Savall and friends, this time focusing on the story of Joan of Arc (p.4). Hyperion’s top releases this month feature works for soloist and orchestra, ranging from Bloch’s evergreen Kol Nidrei with cellist Nathalie Klein (p.11) to Messiaen’s gargantuan Turangalîla for piano and ondes martenot with Stephen Osborne (p.10). LSO Live launches a new series in August dedicated to film music. The début release features conductor Richard Kaufman leading the orchestra in selections from classic scores by the great Dmitri Tiomkin (p.21). Jazz trumpeter Raynald Colom is featured on two new releases from Jazz Village. Colom is a rising star in Europe and his music’s blend of jazz and flamenco is uniquely satisfying (p.18). Italy’s Joe Barbieri offers his own mix of light jazz and romantic pop on Respiro, the artist’s debut release for Chant du Monde (p.17).

Daniil Trifonov plays Tchaikovsky Daniil Trifonov, winner of the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition, is probably the world’s most exciting young pianist. On his first Mariinsky recording, he joins Valery Gergiev for a scintillating performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1. Trifonov also presents a selection of recital repertoire including music by Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Liszt. This will surely be one of the top-selling releases of the holiday season.

The disc’s program of works for choir, soloists and guitar includes the poet’s own compositions as well as those of his teacher Manuel de Falla in addition to works by Rodrigo, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Ferrer. The guitar, a staple of flamenco and the music of Andalusia in general, is featured in Rodrigo’s Invocación y danza, written in honor of de Falla. The featured soloist is Benjamin Valette.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Twenty years after his work on the soundtrack of Jacques Rivette’s movie Jeanne la Pucelle, Jordi Savall returns to this powerful subject matter and presents a new set dedicated to the mother figure of the struggle for French independence. The music on Joan of Arc — Battles & Prisons provides the perfect atmosphere for Savall’s fresh look at this historical icon. Alongside works by composers from the time of Joan of Arc (Guillaume Dufay, Josquin Desprez, Johannes Vincenet, Johannes Cornago, etc.), the set also features compositions and arrangements by Jordi Savall. The biographical program of the set is further illustrated through spoken dialogue. The accompanying 500 page, six language hardbound book is richly illustrated and provides historical perspective as well as texts and translations. The result is a vivid portrait of a troubled time.
“Savall travels in the shadows while delivering a dizzying array of fascinating CD and book packages that document not only the music of the classical world, but also contextualize the history and lore from which it sprang... This is no mere academic exercise.” August 2012

La Voz del Olvido — The Voice of Oblivion Selections from the Cantigas de Amigo
IMPORT This new recording from Vox Suavis is a collection of music from lost traditions. It revives the legacy of generations of anonymous musicians from the various regions of Spain, presenting a folkloric music that was once common to the rural population. The melodies and flavor of this tradition, active until the mid-twentieth century, were absorbed by composers such as Falla and Rodrigo and have become part of the national style of Spanish classical music. Also included are a much earlier example of Spanish ‘popular’ music, the Medieval Cantigas de amigo by Martin Codax. The juxtaposition of these two traditions, with their contrasts and connections, demonstrates the richness and variety of both styles.

Recorded on a sumptuous Hemsch instrument from 1751, the set includes a fascinating selection of Ordres (suites), some of which eschew the commonly used Baroque dances and substitute movements with programmatic titles such as “Les Amusements,” “Les Chinois,” “La Convalescente” and “La Visionnaire.” The cover of the disc features a highly evocative portrait of Verlet by the American painter H. Craig Hanna.

Advance review “Their account of the great G major is something out of the ordinary — I don’t recall a performance of this work in which Schubert’s existential angst is so relentlessly projected. The tragedy and drama of this music have rarely been so harrowingly delivered on disc.”
IMPORT For their first recording of music by Franz Schubert, the members of the Cuarteto Casals perform works from two very different periods in the composer’s life. Wrongly dated upon its publication in 1830, the String Quartet No.10 in E flat Major is in fact the work of a 16-year-old musician who had just entered teachers college. It is coupled here with Schubert’s very last effort in the genre, the String Quartet No. 15 in G Major. Symphonic in organization and structure, in its scope and difficulty, it is typical of his later works. Although only thirteen years separate the two pieces, the differences in form and complexity offer the listener a fascinating example of Schubert’s rapid growth and stylistic changes.

Aa34571c!&*!^ZP Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
IMPORT “The Messiaen Monster,” ridiculed by critics at its premiere — in the best tradition of works of genius — is now, “established as one of the most astonishing classics of the twentieth century,” as Nigel Simeone writes in the booklet of this brilliant new release. The joyful generosity of the orchestral writing and kaleidoscopic nature of the musical invention make Turangalîla one of Messiaen’s most characteristic and appealing works, considered by many to be his masterpiece. As well as the distinctive sound of the ondes martenot, the other striking feature is the virtuoso piano part — it is in some ways a concerto, although the sheer scale of the orchestral contribution belies that specific title. Rarely has it been more explosively performed than here, with an acknowledged living master of Messiaen’s piano music, Steven Osborne, at the keyboard.

“Natalie Clein gives an unexaggerated performance... the music takes wing to both beguile and thrill. It’s one of the most persuasive performances of this work that I have heard.”
IMPORT Hyperion presents a dazzling orchestral disc of music from the Jewish tradition of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Bruch’s Kol Nidrei is one of the most well-loved works in the cello repertoire. The descending opening phrase of the cello line is instantly recognizable: a universal, extraordinarily expressive utterance. The main part of the disc comprises the works for cello and orchestra by Ernest Bloch, all part of his ‘Jewish cycle.’ The other large-scale work for cello and orchestra, Voice in the Wilderness, is of a darker hue. Both works reveal a composer whose works should be firmly in the canon of twentieth-century symphonic writing. The cellist here is Natalie Clein, a celebrated figure in British musical life since winning BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1995 and now a formidable artist.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Although Dvorák’s string quartets are among the finest ever written, other than the famous “American” quartet, they remain largely unfamiliar to most listeners. This is surprising, as most of the quartets are brilliant and accessible, full of distinctive melodies and passionate invention. This Hybrid SACD from Praga featuring the Zemlinsky Quartet presents two of the composer’s quartets, Nos.9 and 13. The ninth quartet, in the key of D minor, was completed in late 1877 and dedicated to Brahms. Technically brilliant, the work has a melancholy flavor that has been attributed to Dvorák’s memories of the death of his daughter. The G major thirteenth quartet, one of the composer’s last two efforts in the genre, was the first quartet he completed following his return from America.

IMPORT File in: Jazz As a young prodigy, French trumpeter Raynald Colom caught the attention of jazz greats Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove and Kenny Barron, who helped support Colom’s musical studies. In 2000 he moved to Barcelona where he started freelancing, working with musicians such as Randy Becker, Jesse Davis and Horacio Fumero. During this period, Colom also traveled throughout the US and Latin America as part of Manu Chao’s “Clandestino” tour. Currently, Colom is a star of the Spanish jazz scene, both in concert and in the studio. Rise, Colom’s new album for Jazz Village, is jazz at its most modern. It blends influences as disparate as Bartók, Coltrane, Bix Biederbecke, hip-hop and even French chanson into a rich and flavorful jazz stew that defies categorization. Colom is also considered the premier trumpet player of the Flamenco elite. His 2009 album Evocación blends jazz and Flamenco in a heady mix of improvisations. The album also features the talents of Flamenco legends Chicuelo and Rosario la Tremendita.

DOMESTIC File in: Jazz Rick Germanson has been quickly emerging as one of the most in-demand pianists on the New York scene. On this live album, Germanson is joined by jazz legend Dr. Eddie Henderson, bassist Paul Gill and drummer Lewis Nash for a brisk and hard swinging, straight-ahead set. A rising star in the guitar world, Lage Lund has been building a reputation for himself as an original and innovative voice. Joined by Pete Rende on piano, Ben Street on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums, this live date is a lively combination of cutting edge originals. Jesse Davis was one of the original “young lions” of the 1980’s. On this date he is joined by Ryan Kisor on trumpet, Peter Washington on bass, Spike Wilner on piano and Billy Drummond on drums. Veteran tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama and his trio Bop Juice offer a live set of his originals and standards and demonstrate his gruff, hard bop approach to the music. Lalama’s lyrical, blues based phrasing are both enticing and compelling.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSD File in: Pop / Rock Originally released by Lost Highway Records in 2008, Just A Little Lovin’ is Shelby Lynne’s stirring, emphatic tribute to the late British singer Dusty Springfield. In contrast to the thickly scored originals, Lynne’s recordings of many of the covers are presented in comparatively spare arrangements, favoring acoustic guitars and pianos. In addition to the Springfield tracks, Lynne also covers Tony Joe White’s “Willie and Laura Mae Jones.” PopMatters’ review proclaimed that the album, “manages to go to emotional places that remain unattainable to your run-of-the-mill pop vocalists.” Some of Dusty’s biggest hits are covered here including “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me,” “I Only Want To Be With You,” and “How Can I Be Sure.”

Concert review “Tiomkin’s music evokes his era: there’s little like it to put you straight back into 1950s America... Kaufman’s enthusiasm is virulently infectious to anyone around him... a truly outstanding performance.”

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD File in: Jazz For the first release in a new series from LSO Live focusing on classic film music, LSO Live presents a selection of the greatest scores by the legendary Dimitri Tiomkin. The London Symphony Orchestra’s association with the film industry stretches all the way back to Arthur Bliss’s music for Things to Come, the first time an orchestra had recorded a movie soundtrack. More recently, the LSO has recorded music for major blockbusters including Star Wars and Harry Potter. Russian-born Tiomkin was one of Hollywood’s most highly regarded and versatile composers, who could create memorable scores for almost any story. Tiomkin received a staggering 22 Academy Award nominations, winning four awards. This new recording features veteran conductor Richard Kaufman leading the orchestra in selections from High Noon, The High and the Mighty, The Alamo, Hitchcock’s Dial ‘M’ for Murder and the theme song for Rawhide.
