New Release Highlights The New Year starts off right with a fresh volume in Kristian Bezuidenhout’s acclaimed Mozart series for harmonia mundi. Keyboard Music Vol.4 includes a varied selection of sonatas and other solo works performed with wit and charm (p.13). Also on harmonia mundi, the dynamic duo of Isabelle Faust and Alexander Melnikov delight in a disc of chamber music by Weber (p.12). Hyperion’s stunning collection of Britten’s music for cello featuring Alban Gerhardt is clearly destined to be an award-winner (p.15). The synergy between harpist Lavinia Meijer and composer Philip Glass is powerful on Meijer’s new album of transcriptions for Channel Classics (p.7). Worthy of special note are Christophe Rousset’s latest operatic discovery, Dauvergne’s Hercule mourant (p.5), and a set of the complete Mahler symphonies on DVD and Blu-ray featuring the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (p.19). Non classical priorities include jazz trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf’s soundtrack to René Clair’s 1927 film The Prey of the Wind (p.22), the US début of French jazz vocalist Virginie Teycheyné (p.23) and an anthology featuring the legendary Algerian crooner Lili Boniche on World Village (p.28).

Price Code: 2A14 (2 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $29.98) IMPORT Following on the international success of their recording of Lully’s Bellérophon, Christophe Rousset and his ensemble Les Talens Lyriques present Hercule mourant (Hercules Dying) — an undiscovered operatic treasure by Antoine Dauvergne. When Francoeur and Rebel took over as directors of the Académie Royale de Musique (the Paris Opéra) in 1757, they decided to promote some of the new generation of composers. Among them was Dauvergne, who appears to have enjoyed great favor at that time. Premiered in 1762, Hercule mourant was a success, receiving eighteen performances. The opera’s libretto, written by Jean-François Marmontel, extended the scope of French opera: he was the first to have the courage to bring opera closer to the great spectacles of ancient Greece. Inspired and guided by Marmontel’s libretto, Dauvergne clearly aimed to take the genre in a completely new direction, anticipating the Romantic model for opera that was born with Gluck, while at the same time giving one of the last tributes to the great French tragédie lyrique tradition inherited from Lully.

“Les Talens Lyriques are among the most stylish of Baroque ensembles, while Rousset himself is an exquisite performer.” —THE GUARDIAN

Schumann’s choral masterpiece SCHUMANN Missa Sacra Op.147, Vier dopperchörige Gesänge Op.141 Les Cris de Paris, Geoffroy Jourdain Aparté • AP 044

D14opw8c)@$%@$s Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

IMPORT Schumann’s Missa Sacra was written in the composer’s late period, during a period when he was particularly focused on writing religious music. Never performed before his death, the work came to light thanks to the insistence of Clara Schumann, who not only made sure it was published, but also submitted it (under a pseudonym) to a composing competition run by an English society in its later version for choir and organ. On this recording, Geoffroy Jourdain and his period instrument ensemble Les Cris de Paris make it clear why Clara Schumann felt this was a masterpiece. Jourdain pairs the mass with another late work, Schumann’s splendid a capella choral cycle entitled Vier doppelchörige Gesänge.

IMPORT Born in 1959, Arnaud Petit studied with Luciano Berio. In addition to composing, he has taught at IRCAM, Stanford University and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. Petit’s oeuvre includes opera, vocal, orchestral and chamber music as well as film soundtracks. Concertino Nervoso, the major work on this disc, is based on the dramatic potential of percussion. In it, a solo percussionist, played here by Fabrice Marandola, acts as a kind of deus ex machina. Pairing the soloist with electronics, Concertino Nervoso explores an imaginary link between percussion and various sound worlds, between live performance and its computer double.

Hk23 85c# (!@?K Price Code: A15 (Suggested Retail Price: $15.98)

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Since their first encounter in May 2011, rising star harpist Lavinia Meijer has worked with some frequency with Philip Glass, even though he has never written solo works specifically for the harp. Many of his piano works and piano transcriptions, however, after minor adjustments, prove to be well suited to the modern pedal harp. Very keen on playing modern music, Meijer added Glass’s five-movement Metamorphosis to her repertoire, and after a first and successful performance (in the composer’s presence) at The Melkweg, Amsterdam’s ‘pop temple,’ a first official recording was made for Channel Classics in June 2011. This all-Glass CD further demonstrates the perfect connection between Meijer and this repertoire.

It includes two vivid orchestral works — dating from the 1930s and 1950s — together with the Lascaux Symphony, his fourth. The Lascaux Symphony was inspired by the celebrated cave paintings at Lascaux, France. A four-movement work on a big scale, it addresses significant philosophical as well as musical issues with bold memorable themes and brilliant orchestral writing.

IMPORT Celebrated violist Roger Chase again presents repertoire associated with the great Lionel Tertis, played on Tertis’s own Montagnana viola. The Bax Phantasy is the highlight, with its lyrical slow movement based on a lovely Irish folk song. Vaughan Williams’s eight-movement Suite for Viola and Orchestra, too, has elements of folksong, this time English, and is both virtuosic and catchy. Theodore Holland’s substantial tone poem Ellingham Marshes is a wartime musical picture of the dreamy and wistful atmosphere of the Suffolk marshes.

Romantic Russian symphonies BLUMENFELD Symphony in C minor Op.39 CATOIRE Symphony in C minor Op.7

Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Martin Yates Dutton • CDLX 7298

Hk65387c&@(*@?K Price Code: A22 (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98)

IMPORT On this superb recording, Martin Yates and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra perform symphonies by Georgy Catoire and Felix Blumenfeld. These contemporaries are remembered as pianists, yet both were so much more. Catoire’s Symphony in C minor is in four large-scale movements redolent of the great Russian nationalist composers. Just two years younger than Catoire, Blumenfeld’s Symphony in C minor, subtitled À la mémoire des chers défunts, is a stupendous score honoring those killed in the failed 1905 Revolution.

IMPORT Martin Yates leads the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in an all-Arnell program. The Sinfonia — effectively Arnell’s ‘Symphony No.0’ — was long thought lost. In 2009, Arnell’s daughter found this score among the papers of her late mother in Lincoln City, Nebraska. The Dagenham Symphony is a very approachable score, and features music that was used in the film documentary Opus 68. These two works are coupled with a selection of symphonic works that are for all intents and purposes, ‘unnumbered’ symphonies.

BRITTEN The Turn of the Screw

IMPORT 111 Minutes/ Dolby Digital Stereo 2.0/ DTS 5.1 Surround; Subtitles: English/ French/ German/ Italian/ Spanish It is indeed ‘a curious story,’ as the prologue for The Turn of the Screw explains. The opera features a remote English country house, an old and faithful housekeeper, two young orphan children and an eager new governess sent down from London to look after them. But all is not quite as it seems in the sheltered world of Bly. Spirits from the past increasingly encroach upon the realm of the living, and one question keeps worming its way into the governess’s mind: what exactly did happen between the children, their former governess and the deceased manservant, Peter Quint? Britten’s brilliantly scored, insidiously compelling adaptation of Henry James’s novella takes its themes of childish innocence and adult corruption, then twists and turns them to disturbing and ultimately devastating effect. FRA Musica presents Jonathan Kent’s eerily unsettling staging of the work, recorded at the Glyndebourne Festival with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jakub Hrusa.

Faust & Melnikov delight in music by Weber harmonia mundi

D14opw0c@!)*@^s Price Code: A19 (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)

Was Carl Maria von Weber born only to compose Der Freischütz? So, at least, many people have thought, forgetting the existence of a catalogue of more than 300 compositions in every genre. The Piano Quartet, written when Weber was only 22, already displays the first signs of the fantastic Romanticism that E.T A. Hoffmann was exploring at the same time. As for the delightful Violin Sonatas of 1810, refused by the publisher for their blatant originality (!), they airily mix different styles in an exotic multinational rendezvous. On this delightful recording, violinist Isabelle Faust partners once again with Alexander Melnikov. For the Piano Quartet, this extraordinary duo is joined by Isabelle’s brother Boris Faust on viola and cellist Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt.

“It is Faust’s unmannered, focused artistry that commands attention… she has a way of pulling you deeper into each piece as she goes, varying and intensifying her phrasing until abstract figures speak in anxious sentences.” —THE NEW YORKER

IMPORT This second volume of Hyperion’s Dohnányi piano music series focuses on early works from the period 1897 to 1907, when he was still establishing himself within the great lineage of composer-pianists. Martin Roscoe is the ideal performer, the acknowledged master of this deeply appealing and unfairly neglected repertoire. On Miserere, masterworks from the Renaissance — familiar from Westminster Cathedral Choir’s previous awardwinning recordings — alternate with works by former organists of the cathedral (all themselves masters of liturgical composition) and all are linked by the plainchant that is at the spiritual heart of this music. Hearing music like this in context — recorded in the unique acoustic of the cathedral — perfectly replicates the live experience for the listener.

“Alban Gerhardt is a poet of the cello…”

IMPORT Britten’s long friendship with cellist Mstislav Rostropovich was one of the most inspiring and fruitful musical collaborations in history. It led directly to the composition of some of the most important works for cello of the twentieth century. On this superb recording, Alban Gerhardt performs this body of works in its entirety. In the Cello Sonata he is partnered by Steven Osborne, whose Hyperion recording of Britten’s Piano Concerto received a Gramophone Award. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Andrew Manze join Gerhardt for the Cello Symphony, Britten’s only substantial piece of absolute symphonic music. The astonishing Suites for solo cello complete the set. These works acknowledge their debt to Bach but also demonstrate all the imagination and emotional scope for which the composer is revered.

IMPORT The Latvian choral tradition is admired worldwide. Not only are the country’s many choirs known for their striking vocal prowess, Latvian composers for this genre have created a significant repertoire of overwhelmingly spiritual music — perhaps a reaction to the suppression of that material by the Soviets. On this recording, the Latvian State Choir led by Maris Sirmais perform music by the British composer Gabriel Jackson, who has immersed himself in the contemporary Baltic sound-world. Jackson’s sumptuous choral textures and beautiful, yet individual, harmonic language respond thrillingly to the “Latvian treatment.”

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSD Praga presents the first release in a series of recordings by the legendary pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, specially remastered for SACD. Michelangeli is widely considered to be one of the finest pianists of the 20th Century. Owing to his obsessive perfectionism, relatively few studio recordings were released during Michelangeli’s lifetime. However, these are augmented by numerous recordings (both authorized and bootleg) of live performances. This disc collects ‘approved’ live recordings of works by Ravel and Debussy from 1960, carefully remastered to DSD from mono and stereo tapes.

It was Furtwängler who saved the orchestra from disbandment by the National Socialists in 1938, and saved those members who were half Jewish or otherwise related from expulsion. Originally released by Orfeo Records, this performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 is now available on SACD in a special remastering from Tahra.

Hk4967 c!$*$@XN Price Code: 3A15 (3 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $47.98)

IMPORT The 1902 Paris Opera première of Pelléas et Mélisande opened up new horizons to the great French conductor Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht, and musical theatre became his great interest. Inghelbrecht was appointed musical director of first the Théâtre des Arts, then the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Opéra-Comique and later the Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Française. Perhaps the fact that Inghelbrecht’s mother was English is the reason he was so fond of Mary Garden’s Mélisande, and why one can find in Suzanne Danco’s performance on this recording something of the poetry and the spirit that characterized Garden’s unfailing charm.

FELDMAN Early Piano Pieces

IMPORT Together with John Cage, Earle Brown and Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman is a member of the New York School of contemporary music. Feldman’s music is characterized by minimalist structures — although he was never close to the minimalism of Reich or Glass — and contemplative sounds (without being meditational). His works are based on the concept of “less-ness,” i.e., they do not aim to express anything and follow no logic of musical development. Nevertheless, his works are of utmost complexity and require an extremely sensitive interpretation that is focused down to the last detail. The piano pieces compiled on the present two CDs and played with consummate virtuosity by Sabine Liebner offer a cross-section of his entire compositional output.

SCHWEITZER Kammermusik

Ensemble Courage, Titus Engel Wergo • WER 6753

January 2013

IMPORT Benjamin Schweitzer began his musical studies at the junior department of the Lubeck Music Academy. At age sixteen, he received several prizes at composition and instrumental competitions for young musicians. He completed his studies at the Dresden Music Academy and spent a year studying with Paavo Heininen at the Sibelius Academy. The chamber music works compiled on this recording, performed by the Ensemble Courage led by Titus Engel, were written between 2005 and 2008. They document the composer’s quest for something one could describe as “beauty.” Schweitzer leaves aside components such as melodic elements and virtuoso figurations in favor of extremely fine gradations of a few chosen sounds and textures.

Ligeti’s multi-faceted piano études LIGETI Études for piano

Thomas Hell (piano) Wergo • WER 6763

E0q02wic^&^#@&s Price Code: A24 (Suggested Retail Price: $24.98)

IMPORT In 1985, György Ligeti produced a collection of six piano Études, to which he added two further volumes in the following sixteen years. Whereas the piano étude tradition of the 19th century was continued by Bartók, Debussy and Stravinsky at the beginning of the 20th century, this tradition no longer existed by the end of the 20th century. Ligeti not only wanted to revive a great musical tradition but also to explore its potential in a contemporary form. His piano writing is not only polyphonic in the customary sense, but also polyrhythmic, poly-temporal, and even poly-ethnic. On this recording from Wergo, pianist Thomas Hell makes a powerful case for these fascinating works.

It is a cosmic world theatre in which three protagonists each have been assigned a characterizing melody (a musical “formula”) which unfolds through the musical action of the entire opera cycle. The ensemble musikFabrik is heard here in a live recording from the Théâtre Bobigny in Paris.

IMPORT File in: Jazz A s k e d b y t h e Fr e n c h national film library to compose music for a film of his choosing from among the silent movies in the Albatros catalogue, jazz trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf chose René Clair’s 1927 film La Proie du vent (The Prey of the Wind). The project allowed Maalouf to fulfill two wishes — first to compose for a film, and second to compose a piece that could be very much inspired by Miles Davis’s music for Louis Malle’s Ascenseur pour l’échafaud, but using a quarter-tone trumpet. Maalouf says of the album’s theme, “I wanted to reproduce that mysteriously melancholic atmosphere, dripping with suspense, contributing a discreet yet powerful Arabic hue, blended into the typical jazz quintet played for many years by Miles.”

Baba Scholae Ad Vitam • AV 120920

IMPORT File in: Rock In 1969, legendary psychedelic/early progressive rock band Baba Scholae recorded an album at IBC Sound Recording Studios in London — however, it was never officially released. The band’s leader was Jean-Yves Labat de Rossi, better known as M Frog, the synth and keyboard maestro on Todd Rungren’s early Utopia albums and coincidentally, the founder of the Ad Vitam label. Only three copies (acetates) of 69 where made, but the album’s cult following lasts to this day. Often compared to the work of King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Soft Machine and Gong, Baba Scholae’s 69 is truly a “lost and found again” masterpiece with music that was years ahead of its time. For a gem like this to have been buried for 43 years is nothing short of extraordinary.

IMPORT File in: World / Africa / Algeria Crooner Lili Boniche (1921-2008) was the heir to an erudite tradition of Algerian song and a pillar of “Franco-Arab” music. Born into a Sephardic family in the Casbah in Algiers, Boniche was a child prodigy who taught himself to play his father’s mandola at the age of seven. He was an in-demand singer throughout France in the 1940s and during wartime. Boniche incorporated the tango, paso doble and mambo into his repertoire, especially while entertaining the troops. He retired in the 50s, only to launch a second career in 1990 and release the album Boniche Dub in 1998, produced by Bill Laswell and fashion doyen Jean Touitou. The album earned him new fans across Europe. This retrospective combining his greatest hits and previously unreleased works not only fills a gap with regard to available recordings, but it pays tribute to an important pioneer of cultural fusion.

Oai E Libertat

Massilia Sound System Chant du Monde • 2742228

January 2013

The musically sensational and politically outspoken band Massilia Sound System has been stirring up Marseille since 1984. While their lyrics are largely in Occitan, the main ambition of these seven composers and performers is to revive cross-cultural exchanges via the power of the city’s rich cultural melting-pot, thus restoring tolerance and joie de vivre. Their motto is to rouse the people and bridge the generation gap, a theme that is constant in their brisk and lively music and their infectious optimism on stage. Featured here are four of the band’s classic albums, reissued at mid-price and including newly released material. The titles range from 2000’s 3968 CR13 to two live albums, Massilia fait tourner and Oai e Libertat, both of which include DVDs (PAL format) with newly available video footage.
