The group’s latest release for Gimell features Taverner’s resplendent Missa Gloria tibi Trinitas (p.9). Rachel Podger explores Baroque repertoire for solo violin on her new collection for Channel entitled Guardian Angel (p.5). Hyperion’s four key releases go from strength to strength. Marc-André Hamelin plays Busoni on a three-disc collection of the composer’s late piano music (p.17), pedal piano virtuoso Roberto Prosseda is featured on volume 62 in the Romantic Piano Concerto series (p.18), Stephen Layton leads the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge in a joyful reading of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (p.20) and the renowned Takács Quartet plays the three String Quartets of Britten (p.19). IMPORT In the fifty years between Vaughan Williams’s Three Impressions for Orchestra and his Prelude on an Old Carol Tune, despite unprecedented worldwide social and political change, the composer’s style remained remarkably consistent. The Impressions, recorded here for the first time, describe three natural beauties of England – Burley Heath, Harnham Down and The Solent. The Mayor of Casterbridge was written for a radio serial broadcast in 1951, and it too receives its world première. The remainder of the disc includes the first book of the Songs of Travel and the Four Hymns for tenor, viola & strings. Performers include tenor Andrew Kennedy, baritone Roland Wood, violist Nicholas Bootiman and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra led by Paul Daniel.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD The music on this recording demonstrates how Baroque composers in Germany, Italy, Austria and England responded to the challenges of writing for solo violin. Violinistic virtuosity was extraordinarily experimental in the late seventeenth century, with novelties in the tuning of the strings (scordatura), bowing techniques, chordal playing and contrapuntal textures (with the development of sophisticated double-, triple- and quadruple-stopping techniques) and playing in high positions. This disc of solo violin music features a mixture of some of Rachel Podger’s favorite pieces.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD On this disc, the Katona Twins perform two duets and two solo works by J.S. Bach. The duets were originally composed for the harpsichord and the solo pieces were originally for the lute. Because of the complexity and difficulty of lute works, many support the idea that these works were written for an instrument called the Lautenwerk or lute-harpsichord (a small harpsichord with a similarly shaped body to that of a lute). We know that Bach possessed at least two of these instruments, according to the inventory of instruments made at his death. Critically acclaimed by the Absolute Sound for their “fabulous guitar technique and highly refined musical instincts,” Peter and Zoltán Katona approach these works from a fresh and vibrant perspective.

IMPORT In the famous Preface to Alceste, Christoph Willibald Gluck and his librettist Ranieri de’ Calzabigi advanced a proposal for a new direction in opera. They spoke of moving beyond Baroque forms, of striving for a new naturalism. They wanted, in Calzabigi’s lovely phrase, to “liberate the language of the heart.” Taken from the height of this Reform period, the arias on this disc reveal composers exploring and experimenting, at struggle and at play, as they create the new forms that bring to opera the noble simplicity of the Classical era. The remarkable countertenor Bejun Mehta is the featured soloist, accompanied by the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin led by René Jacobs.

IMPORT To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Paul Hindemith, Hyperion presents two discs featuring some of the composer’s finest works played by two of the label’s finest soloists. Pianist Markus Becker has been acclaimed for his persuasive and authoritative recordings of German repertoire of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was in the second half of Hindemith’s career that Hindemith produced his major works for solo piano. In his three Piano Sonatas, all written in 1936, Hindemith presents himself not as the rebel and revolutionary of the 1920s, but rather as an heir to the contrapuntal skill and keyboard dexterity of Johann Sebastian Bach. Hindemith’s Violin Sonatas mirror the various stages in the development of his musical language from the vocabulary of late Romanticism to the monumental, contrapuntal and revivified Baroque idiom of his maturity. They are performed here by virtuoso German violinist Tanja Becker-Bender who has made a specialty of the music of the early twentieth century.

These four works by Charles Gounod are for pedal piano (a piano that includes a separate keyboard for the feet). Better known for his operatic and liturgical compositions, Gounod was inspired by the talent of the young and apparently very attractive Lucie Palicot whom he heard performing Alkan’s music for the instrument in 1882. It was written to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Purcell’s death – a composer who was a lifetime inspiration to Britten – and the last movement is cast in the form of a huge Chacony. The third quartet was written at the end of Britten’s life and refers specifically to his last opera, Death in Venice. He (Suggested Retail Price: $11.98) subsequently approached the project with such enthusiasm and concentration that a friend wrote of him, “If you go and see him during the day he says ‘Hello. However, the melody and beauty that infuse the Octet are quintessentially Schubert, and justify the work’s enduring popularity. IMPORT File in: World / Europe / France An important settlement for more than two millennia, by the late 12th century Paris was Price Code: 3A18 Europe’s foremost center of learning and the (12 CDs for the price of 3, arts and remained the largest city in the Western Suggested Retail Price: $56.98) world until the turn of the 18th century. Today, Paris is indisputably one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world. Over the years, musicians from around the world have done their best to capture the essence of this amazing city in song. Nothing has escaped the impassioned pen of her partisans: neither her failings not her virtues, her customs nor her inhabitants, her splendors nor her seediness. With an all-star cast of performers and 320 tracks, this new set is the largest anthology ever devoted to the City of Light. Divided into twelve chapters, Chant du Monde’s gorgeous, speciallypriced boxed set Les Chansons de Paris provides a comprehensive overview of the rich variety of songs which make up this seemingly inexhaustible repertoire.
