Anonymous 4 sings songs of love On their 1994 album Love’s Illusion, the extraordinary vocal quartet Anonymous 4 brought 13th century motets of courtly love from the Montpellier Codex to the top of the classical charts – spending 29 weeks on the Billboard Top 200. Ten years later, they return to the source – this time exploring the juxtaposition of desire for the earthly lady Marion and adoration of the heavenly Marie.

GRAUN Oboe Concertos Xenia Löffler (oboe), Batzdorfer Hofkapelle Accent • ACC 24280 IMPORT Brothers Johann Gottlieb and Carl Heinrich Graun were highly influential and popular figures in 18th Century Berlin. As musicians of the court Price Code: A22 of Frederick the Great, Carl Heinrich became an (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98) important figure at the new Berlin Court Opera, while Johann Gottlieb strongly influenced early classicism in general as a violinist and composer. The name Graun was like a seal of approval in those days for zestful music rich in ideas, displayed perfectly by this collection of concertos. Oboist Xenia Löffler, a member of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, has distinguished herself as a specialist for the North German repertoire of this period.

A contemporary of far better-known masters such Price Code: A22 as Galuppi, Pergolesi and Gluck, he developed his (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98) very own variant of the gallant style. Ferrandini also enjoyed international fame as a vocal pedagogue. This collection of secular cantatas featuring mezzo soprano Olivia Vermeulen accompanied by Florian Deuter and Harmonie Universelle provides eloquent testimony to his special affinity for vocal music. The fact that his passion cantata Il pianto di Maria was long considered a work of Handel’s demonstrates the depth of Ferrandini’s compositional skill.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo Accent’s acclaimed Cantata series featuring Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande concludes with volume eighteen. The disc offers works for the twenty-sixth Sunday after Trinity, the sixth Sunday after Trinity and Palm Sunday. Kuijken’s cycle is notable for its use of solo voices in place of a choir. Once highly controversial, this approach has gained traction in some musicological circles. Regardless of authenticity, the superb performances in this series deserve a wide audience and shed new light on familiar territory. Accent’s Super Audio recordings also give the music an added depth and clarity not possible on a standard compact disc.

MOZART Piano Concerto K175, Ah, lo previdi K272

This disc Price Code: A22 features two versions of Mozart’s first concerto, (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98) K175, written in 1773. Coupled with the original version is the composer’s 1782 revision that replaces the final movement with a Viennese rondo. Schoonderwoerd takes into account advances in instrument building by using a harpsichord for the early Salzburg version and a fortepiano in the later Vienna version. Featuring the crystal clear playing of Schoonderwoerd’s ensemble Cristofori, this recording is completed by the concert aria Ah, lo previdi for soprano and orchestra sung by Johannette Zomer.

IMPORT Fabio Biondi returns with the first recording of Carlo Re d’Alemagna by Alessandro Scarlatti, first performed in Naples in January 1716. The opera Price Code: 3A19 (3 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $59.98) was resurrected in 2003 by Biondi (leader of the innovative ensemble Europa Galante) who led a concert performance with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. It is in many ways a typical example of Neapolitan Baroque opera with action assigned to the recitatives whilst the characters are developed during the arias. A mixture of opera seria and opera buffo, the opera deals with the accession to power and its exercise.

[PRIORITY RELEASE] Bal-kan: Honey & Blood – Cycles of Life 3 SACDs FOR THE PRICE OF 2

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD The name of the Balkans has an unusually graphic etymology. Having discovered the beauty of this pivotal part of Europe and experienced the ruggedness of its people (who put up fierce resistance to invasion), the Turks chose to describe the region with the words Bal (Honey) and Kan (Blood). Never was there so apt a metaphor. On this new set from Alia Vox, Jordi Savall presents an ambitious program that explores the length and breadth of a region that has always had more than its share of human and historical drama. Joined by guest musicians from the Balkan region, Savall traces the cycles of life, structured around the four seasons of the year and the corresponding seasons of human life. IMPORT Named 2014 Conductor of the Year by Musical America, Pablo HerasCasado has made his name exploring repertoire that is outside of the mainstream. For his second recording on the harmonia mundi label, Heras-Casado conducts Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.2, nicknamed Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise). Commissioned to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the invention of the printing press, the work is a massive symphony-cantata for soloists, chorus and orchestra. Although clearly inspired by Beethoven’s ninth, the comparison did the work no favors with critics of the time and eventually it fell into an unjust obscurity. The symphony consists of a three-movement instrumental ‘overture’ followed by ten movements for soloists and choir and orchestra set to texts from the Lutheran bible. Joined by sopranos Christiane Karg and Christina Landshamer and tenor Michael Schade, Heras-Casado leads the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir in a powerful performance of this sweeping vocal and choral epic.

This masterly work, dedicated to the Virgin of Rocamadour, gives pride of place to the chorus and clearly shows its line of descent from the French motets of the age of Louis XIV. It is paired with the Sept Répons de Ténèbres, Poulenc’s last choral work. Although sacred in nature, it was written for a nonreligious celebration, the opening of New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Malcolm Williamson was one of many Australian creative artists who relocated to Britain in the mid-twentieth century. Within a decade of settling in London he had established a reputation as one of the most gifted and prolific composers of his generation. However today, he is almost forgotten and his music virtually never performed. This set of his complete Piano Concertos is therefore an important document as well as a compendium of deeply appealing music. [PRIORITY RELEASE] Denis Matsuev (piano), Mariinsky Orchestra, Valery Gergiev Mariinsky • MAR 0549 IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD This release from the Mariinsky label features two of Prokofiev’s most popular works – the Piano Concerto No.3 and the Symphony No.5. Denis Matsuev is the soloist in the concerto, in his fourth recording for the label. Since winning the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998, Matsuev has established a reputation as one of Russia’s leading pianists. Written at the height of World War II, Prokofiev’s Symphony No.5 is a patriotic work – big, heroic and ultimately optimistic. Prokofiev wrote five piano concertos, but it is his third that has gained the most popularity and critical acclaim. The clarity and vitality that appealed to the work’s original audiences have stood the test of time.

HAYDN String Quartets Op.76 No.1, Op.50 No.1 & Op.77 No.1

IMPORT With 68 works to his credit, Joseph Haydn was not only the founding father of the string quartet, but also an undisputed master of the genre. This influence continued through his direct successors, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven, through the Romantic era and into the 20th century via the second Viennese School. Continuously renewed with each performance, his music is a constant source of wonder, as evidenced by the three works that the Modigliani Quartet have chosen for their second release on Mirare devoted to Papa Haydn.

IMPORT Tuba player Melvyn Poore is a world-renowned soloist, composer and scholar. This recording offers a selection of notable contemporary works (including a composition of his own) by Georg Katzer, Cort Lippe and Valerio Sannicandro. In these works, the tuba, combined with the live electronics, acts as a meta instrument, while at the same time being the calming influence, no matter whether the works are meticulously fragmented or narratively structured. Trumpet player Marco Blaauw has made the further development of the trumpet, its technique and repertoire, his life’s work. He frequently collaborates both with successful contemporary composers and younger composers that deserve to be heard. On this recording, Blaauw presents a fascinating selection of contemporary compositions for trumpet. It includes works by Liza Lim, Rebecca Saunders and the composer of the title track, Carl Ruggles.
