Serenissima Music from Renaissance Europe on Venetian Viols
IMPORT The Rose Consort of Viols took their inspiration for Serenissima from viol-maker Richard Jones’s reconstruction of a Venetian instrument by Price Code: A19 Francesco Linarol. On it they trace a path from the (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98) viol’s northern Italian origins to England, where it found a particularly welcome home at the turn of the 1600s. During this period, a work by one composer might become the subject of ingenious contrapuntal treatments and exciting new dance genres emerged.

IMPORT The ensemble Gli incogniti, led by Amandine Beyer, makes their harmonia mundi début with this album of chamber music by François Couperin. But, far from blindly imitating his idols, Couperin takes inspiration from these styles and arrives at a blend that takes the best from both.
