The latest release from the San Francisco Symphony features a selection of brief musical gems handpicked by maestro Michael Tilson Thomas. Masterpieces in Miniature’s twelve delightful tracks range from the haunting Valse triste of Sibelius to the fiery Scherzo by Littolf, for which the orchestra is joined by the brilliant pianist Yuja Wang (p.33). Other keyboard highlights this month include Javier Perianes playing Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words (p.13), Marc-André Hamelin playing Debussy’s Images and Preludes (p.17) and 2014 Gramophone Award-winning harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani playing Rameau’s Pièces de Clavecin (p.21). New releases in Schubert lieder cycles on harmonia mundi and Onyx include Winterreise with Matthias Goerne (p.11) and Schwanengesang with Florian Boesch (p.27). November’s vocal glories also include Bach’s monumental B Minor Mass in a new recording for Hyperion performed by the talented young ensemble Arcangelo led by Jonathan Cohen (p.19). Jordi Savall owes one of his greatest recording successes to the album La Lira d’Espéria, released in 1994 on the Astrée label. This month he revisits this repertoire for Alia Vox with La Lira d’Espéria II, which focuses on music from Galicia (p.7). Clarinetist Jon Manasse and pianist Jon Nakamatsu team up for more Brahms, this time joined by ex Tokyo Quartet cellist Clive Greensmith in a performance of the lyrical Clarinet Trio (p.14). Last but not least, jazz fans will delight in Christmas Dreaming, the new holiday album from Canadian vocalist Susie Arioli (p.3).

Bach: Brandenburg Concertos Florilegium Channel • CCS SA 35914

Florilegium plays Bach Florilegium, one of Britain’s finest period instrument ensembles, is known for their stylish and exciting interpretations. The Brandenburg Concertos, like many of Bach’s sets, form a kind of master anthology — a demonstration of all the imaginable possibilities inherent in a certain musical form. Each of these six concertos calls for a different combination of soloists, every one unprecedented in its choice of instruments and still without parallel today.

One of the composer’s finest scores, Amadis is a masterpiece of French Baroque music. It was Louis XIV himself who asked Lully and his librettist Quinault to base an opera on Montalvo’s Amadis de Gaula. Avoiding the usual mythological subjects gave the composer and librettist an opportunity to expand the scope of the tragédie lyrique genre.

IMPORT Florian Boesch’s previous Onyx discs of Schubert songs have been met with the highest praise from around the world. To complete his survey of the Schubert song cycles, Boesch presents an equally compelling reading of Schwanengesang, once again accompanied by the superb pianist Malcolm Martineau. Worthy of note, Boesch excludes the song Die Taubenpost, which was added to the cycle by the publisher, not by Schubert. This recording also features five Goethe settings dating from 1815-1821.

PROKOFIEV Symphonies Vol.2 Symphonies Nos.1-2, Sinfonietta, Autumn Sketch

IMPORT Volume two of Kirill Karabits’s Prokofiev symphony cycle for Onyx charts Prokofiev’s development through the charming but undervalued Sinfonietta (a close cousin to the Symphony No.1, also known as the Classical) to the strident, modernistic Symphony No.2, composed in 1924. Closing this disc is the early symphonic poem Autumn Sketch, which sounds rather like a blend of Richard Strauss and Scriabin - a world away from the second symphony.

IMPORT Paradizo commemorates the 250th anniversary of the death of Rameau with a recreation of the music heard at his memorial service in 1764. This world première recording centers around the “Rameau’s Funeral” version of Jean Gilles’s Messe des morts. Nearly sixty years after it was written, an arrangement – probably by Rebel and Francoeur – was prepared for Rameau’s memorial. The duo “updated” the work by changing the instrumentation and incorporating musical references in Rameau’s honor. The recording features the combined forces of Collegium Vocale Gent and Capriccio Stravagante, led by acclaimed conductor Skip Sempé.
