[PRIORITY RELEASE] BIBER Missa Salisburgensis
IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Biber’s Missa Salisburgensis is the largest-scale work of sacred music from the Baroque period. It is an archetypical work of the Colossal Baroque, a poly-choral composition which took advantage of the multiple organs and various locations available for groups of singers and musicians to perform in the Salzburg Cathedral. It was likely composed for the 1682 celebrations that marked the 1100th anniversary of the founding of the Archbishopric of Salzburg. This stunning recording features Jordi Savall’s ensembles at their best and fully reveals the splendor of this masterpiece.

[PRIORITY RELEASE] RAMEAU Zaïs
IMPORT In 1745, King Louis XV granted Jean-Philippe Rameau the post of Composer du cabinet du roy. During this period, he composed some lighter works, in collaboration with librettist Louis de Cahusac that went on to become some of his most important masterpieces. One of them was Zaïs, first performed in 1748 on the stage of the Académie Royale de Musique. The plot revolves around a lover (Zaïs) putting his beloved (Zélidie) to the test in order to cherish her all the more. IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD One of the icons of chamber music, Schubert’s celebrated String Quintet is heard in an unusual Price Code: A21 version on this recording. Schubert’s work was (Suggested Retail Price: $21.98) styled after those of Boccherini and Onslow, which featured two violins, viola and two cellos. After hearing the double bass virtuoso Domenico Dragonetti, Onslow decided to add an alternative bass part to replace the second cello part. Schubert might have done the same if he had heard Dragonetti play, so the Amsterdam Sinfonietta commissioned this Marijn van Prooijen adaptation, and the double bass part is performed here by Rick Stotijn.

This album features Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending, two cornerstones of the violin repertoire. Gould’s versions demonstrate a brilliance of tone and color that demands attention. His playing has the clarity you would expect but radiates a freedom in its expression as though improvised with an immediate elegance and poise.

IMPORT Light and Shadows is the new album by internationally acclaimed British pianist Tom Poster. Lauded for his outstanding artistry, versatility, lyrical tone and sensitivity, Poster works with a wideranging and diverse group of soloists in the UK’s classical scene. The choice of repertoire emerged from Poster’s love of three key composers: Beethoven, Schumann and Chopin. Poster said of the recording, “I chose one of Beethoven’s most relaxed and radiant sonatas juxtaposed with one of Chopin’s darkest and most intense works. To balance I decided to perform Schumann’s magical Waldszenen, a work of beauty and mystery, shadows and half-lights.” This is a satisfying program of contrasting lightness and darkness.

Robert Soetens premièred the Duo Sonata in Paris in December 1932, partnered by Samuel Dushkin, for whom Stravinsky had recently composed a violin concerto. Knowing of Prokofiev’s rivalry with Stravinsky, Soetens persuaded Prokofiev to write him a concerto. Composed in 1935 just before Prokofiev resettled in Soviet Russia, the Violin Concerto No.2 includes in its central movement one of his most celebrated long-arching melodies. The Solo Sonata was an official commission towards the end of Prokofiev’s life. Originally intended for an ensemble of talented child violinists, Prokofiev wrote the work that it could also be played by a soloist.

IMPORT File in: Jazz Scottish actor David Tennant is well known from his starring roles in the popular British television show Doctor Who and as Barty Crouch, Jr. in the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. On this special release from Le Chant du Monde, Tennant stars as the narrator in a fantastic jazz transcription of Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and The Wolf. Taking the place of a classical orchestra, The Amazing Keystone Big Band provide the musical elements that are essential to the telling of this classic story. The booklet also portrays the story in a series of magnificent illustrations by the French artist Martin Jarrie. Commissioned in 2012 by the Festival Jazz à Vienne, this “non-classical” Peter and the Wolf aimed to introduce children to jazz. Prokofiev wrote the original work in 1936 to give young listeners an introduction to the instruments of the classical orchestra. Threequarters of a century later, (with no small thanks to The Doctor) this new version will delight and inspire listeners of all ages.

Mechanics
IMPORT File in: Jazz French saxophonist and composer Sylvain Rifflet has his finger firmly set on the pulse of modern times. Working with his group Alphabet, he has masterminded an innovative and spell-binding brand of music in which the modernity of his jazz sound combines with the world of New York minimalism. Poets and writers of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century often described the then-nascent “industrial world” and its machines as “enemies of art.” However some did not see progress as dehumanizing. Science fiction imagined a futuristic world, which inspired artists and writers such as Jules Verne and HG Wells. Rifflet’s album Mechanics, with a cover illustration by Belgian comic book artist François Schuiten, journeys through forward looking and fantastical worlds.
