NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS Please note street dates indicated in the red boxes Singer-songwriter Leyla McCalla is best known for her work with the GRAMMY® winning string band Carolina Chocolate Drops. Deeply influenced by traditional Creole, Cajun and Haitian music, as well as by American jazz and folk, her music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty. McCalla's solo début, Vari-Colored Songs, was named 2013’s Album of the Year by the London Sunday Times and Songlines magazine. Her new album, A Day for the Hunter, A Day for the Prey, continues to explore the themes of social justice that marked Vari-Colored Songs, and includes guest appearances by legendary guitarist Marc Ribot and Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Tim Garland is one of the most versatile musicians in the UK. Highly skilled as an instrumentalist, composer and bandleader, Garland has developed a highly original voice, with a marriage of diverse influences combined with unique and varied line-ups. On Garland's latest album, One, the sax maestro has dug back into his past and reexamined his early interest in jazz-rock styles. Virtuoso keyboard playing is the highlight on new solo albums by harpsichordist Richard Egarr and pianist Steven Osborne. Egarr tackles Bach's French Suites, while Osborne plays contemporary American music by Crumb and Feldman. Legendary pianist Marc-André Hamelin joins the Takács Quartet for César Franck's deeply emotional Piano Quintet, and awardwinning vocalist Matthias Goerne, accompanied by pianist Christoph Eschenbach, offers a new album of Brahms lieder.
MESSAGE TO CUSTOMERS In 2015, the harmonia mundi group was purchased by [PIAS] — one of Europe’s top independent music companies. Integration of harmonia mundi's existing operations into [PIAS] has been happening behind the scenes since last May. This month marks the US office's official re-launch, and with it comes a totally new look and a renewed focus on our core strengths — the fantastic labels and artists we represent and our unconditional love of music. Newly-branded as [PIAS] harmonia mundi usa, we've entered into a partnership with RED to handle our sales and distribution. The Los Angeles office will complement RED’s efforts, helping to market and promote key releases and artists as well as maintain and build their industry and media presence. The revamping doesn't stop there. To allow us to focus more effectively on important projects and developing artists, our label roster has also been reduced. We’ll now be representing only 27 labels — 6 from the harmonia mundi family and 21 partner labels. We're wholeheartedly embracing the wisdom of 'less is more.' The revised list of our label partners through RED is available on our website, www.pias-hmusa.com. Some things will remain unchanged. For those of you who have come to depend upon our data support and asset delivery, those services will continue to be provided by the LA office. We’ll also maintain our existing website and continue to keep everyone apprised of press and promotions. And of course, our top-notch publicity and media service department will keep doing what it does best. Some of you may not be familiar with RED. An award-winning division of Sony Music Entertainment, RED is widely recognized as an industry leader in music distribution and artist development. If you're already a RED customer, a sales rep will be calling on you soon. If you're not, RED's contact information is listed below and the LA office is ready to provide assitance in getting your new accounts established. For our Canadian customers, RED will be providing service to you via Sony's distribution system. You'll need to be a Sony customer to place orders.

The Novus String Quartet was founded in 2007 at the National University of the Arts in Seoul. After critical success in Korea, they moved to Germany in 2011. This début album sits at the crossroads of their Korean and German influences. Demonstrating prodigious technique at the service of exceptional musicality, their versions of Werbern's Langsamer Satz and Beethoven's String Quartet No.11 stand up to any comparisons. Isang Yun's Quartet No.1 integrates Korean musical folklore with dazzling colors in the style of Bartók.

In 2013, Dutch soprano Johannette Zomer founded her own ensemble, the Tulipa Consort. Here they make there recording début with a selection of lesser-known works by Antonio Vivaldi. Zomer says the idea for this program came together several years ago while singing Laudate Peri in Montréal. She felt Vivaldi was too often only associated with the Four Seasons and the Gloria, while there is so much more. This beautiful vocal recital is a showcase for the 'other side' of Vivaldi.

In the world of German lieder, Brahms is often overshadowed by Schubert and Schumann. After completing his highly acclaimed series of Schubert lieder recordings, about which Gramophone magazine said, "he touches greatness as a Schubertian," German baritone Matthias Goerne turns to the deeply expressive songs by Brahms. Partnered with Christoph Eschenbach, these two exceptional collaborators reunite for another thoughtfully chosen program.

The church music of Victorian England has retained a secure foothold in music history. Secular partsongs written during this period were not so lucky. Bartók's Violin Concerto No.2 was commissioned in 1936 by the eminent Hungarian violinist Zoltán Székely, a personal friend and frequent recital partner of the composer. It is a work that takes the virtuosity and melodic richness of the Romantic concerto tradition and recasts it in the terms of Bartók's own, highly personal idiom, with all its contradictions - spiky yet warm, bold and yet contained. The violin concerto is paired with the Concerto for Orchestra, a work that embodies a perfect synthesis of all the elements of Bartók's mature style. By virtue of its accessibility, it brought him a far wider audience than he had previously known. French violinist Augustin Dumay is the soloist in the violin concerto, joined by Kent Nagano leading the Montréal Symphony Orchestra.

Ever the humorist, Shostakovich delighted in placing allusions in his works. The Symphony No.15 is particularly rich with these references. In addition to the cryptic hints to his own music, it includes an outburst of Rossini's William Tell Overture, allusions to Mikhail Glinka and Gustav Mahler and the use of Richard Wagner's Fate leitmotif from the Ring Cycle. It is featured here in a program that includes Shostakovich's Suite on Verses of Michelangelo and his Novorossiysk Chimes.

A Day for the Hunter, A Day for the Prey, the follow up to Leyla McCalla's critically acclaimed Vari-Colored Songs, is a musical exploration of two cultural identities — one sprouted in the United States and the other firmly planted in Hati. McCalla alternates between cello, tenor banjo and guitar, and sings in English, French and Haitian Creole. Whether she tackles fresh versions of traditional pieces or original compositions, there is a timelessness and perceptivity to all of her songs, which ask big questions and demand big answers.
