CHALLENGE YOURSELF

Your evening routine will consist of more steps as most of us have more time in the evening. However, try not to think of your skincare routine as a chore, something standing between you and finally being able to get into bed at the end of a long day. This is an opportunity to take a few minutes just for yourself. Take the time to massage your face, let go of the stresses of the day and prepare your mind for sleep.

Stage 1: Double cleanse

Balm cleansers are oil based and oil attracts oil, so begin with a balm cleanser to melt away the day’s make up and grime. Wipe away with a face or washcloth and warm water and follow up with a gel cleanser to get rid of any residual cleanser and get into the pores. Cleaning our skin in a thorough but kind way is the cornerstone of a good skincare routine. I promise the double cleanse takes so little effort and is absolutely worth it. You can use the same product twice, if you prefer. This might sound obvious, but do not to wash your face in water that is too hot. You will stress your skin and likely dry it out. If you suffer from rosacea be particularly mindful of this.

Stage 2: Exfoliate for skin type

Exfoliation used to mean using a granular exfoliant, which only dealt with the very top layer of the skin. But here I’m talking about liquid exfoliant that stays on and it should be based on what is best for your skin type (see page 16). This will clear out any dead skin cells and is essential for brightening your complexion. It also preps your skin for the products to follow.

Stage 3: Serum for skin concern

Now look at retinoids and how you can add them to your routine. Select one that is specific to your skin issues (see page 124).

Stage 4: Moisturiser (optional)

I don’t use a really heavy cream or facial oil at night because I think our skin needs to have time to breathe. But if you feel your skin needs it, add this step. I recommend a much lighter formula that can easily penetrate, as you should be careful of the weight you put on top of your skin. Overnight is the best opportunity for our skin to rid itself of any toxins and regenerate.
