This edition of Harrier Magazine is dedicated to Eric “Digit” McGaw, a hashman extraordinaire. Interhash Goa is but a part of the legend and legacy of our dearly departed friend. Asia-Pacific Harrier Magazine was launched at IH Goa in 2002, to carry on in the footsteps of Harrier International after the passing of Tim “Magic” Hughes in 1998. We bid a fond farewell to Betty Ford, as she calls it quits after 30 years of rocking and shocking Palm Springs, California. Five hundred years of beer are celebrated across Europe in A Tale of 2 Cities. Those so inclined can head to Ethiopia for a mountain challenge, or to Mongolia for a sunrise to sunset adventure.

HARRIER MAGAZINE PUBLISHER JIM EDENS TALKING WITH FILIPINA ACTRESS ANNA CAPRI AT PHILIPPINE HASH BASH IN PUERTO GALERA. The Aloha H3 celebrates 25 years with an interisland cruise featuring brews from each island. On the Ice takes a case, and makes a case for gin as a recovery drink for thirsty hashers. If you’re going to Interhash 2016 in Bali, please stop by and say hi at the Harrier Magazine table in the Hash Bazaar. I hope to see you on trail soon. On On, Jim Edens

A TRIBUTE TO ERIC McGAW

Digit

Sweet Chariot finally carries Digit home

I

t is with immense sadness that we inform you of the demise of Eric “Digit” McGaw, a dear friend and founder of the Hyderabad Hash House Harriers (H4), his pride and joy, which he built, nurtured, mentored and fussed over like a mother hen.

CONTENTS

A larger than life personality, whose enormous frame hid a heart of gold, Eric’s few “faults” included his unending and immeasurable generosity, and his total lack of spite or revenge. His boundless energy, his enthusiasm, his skill as a raconteur and his witticisms are of course legendary. Eric’s family was the most important part of his life, and we sincerely and deeply condole with his wife Elena, and children Tucker, John and Rachel. H4 will hold a memorial run on 3 April, at which we will fulfill Digit’s wish by mixing his ashes in the marking powder, and setting the run through some of his old stomping grounds in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. All are welcome. We will also be conducting a memorial meeting, not to mourn, but to celebrate Eric’s life (as we are sure he would have us do) on 5 April (venue and time yet to be decided). If you cannot attend this memorial we would appreciate messages from you ASAP, which we will read out at the meeting. On home Digit. Faiz (GM of H4)

his is a Tale of Two Historic Cities, Antwerp Belgium and Freistadt Austria. There are two events on opposite sides of Europe. Both are a celebration of beer, organized by seasoned hashers and are on the same weekend, 22-24 April. If you are in Europe and not at one of these events, you must live under a rock. On 23 April 1516, the Reinheitsgebot, or Beer Purity Law, adopted in Bavaria to assure that all beer was produced from only water, barley and hops. It was implemented for food safety and so that the wheat and rye would be reserved for making bread. 500 years later, with Germanic precision, the Vienna Vindobona Hash House Harriers, Organizers of EuroHash 2017, will host a weekend on 22-24 April 2016, the exact anniversary of this famous law. The weekend begins on Thursday in Vienna, discovering old and new breweries. The starting point is appropriately, a pub called 1516 for some craft brews. Participants will discover the healing parts of beer with an ambulance experience in the Stiegl Bierambulanz pub, and a clinic visit at the Gösser Bierklinik pub. They will end the beer discovery trail at a microbrewery where hashers are always welcome. The weekend itself will be hosted in Freistadt, translated as “Freetown”, a picturesque mediaeval brewery town in the state of Upper Austria in

BETTY FORD IS THROWING IN THE TOWEL AND CALLING IT QUITS after an amazing 30-year run. Palm Springs will never be the same, and those of us who visited Betty will never forget those magic times. Betty Pie (The Day, the Rehabs Died)

(Sung to the tune “American Pie”) A long, long time ago I can still remember how hashers Weren’t all senile Back then I knew DJ Flash Pants
could make all those young hashers dance And maybe they’d stop drinkin’for a while. February my liver quivered With each hash flyer I delivered Hash news on your door step Rash views for your twelve step. I can’t remember if I cried when I heard of a hash for Jerry’s bride But something touched me deep inside, The day, the rehabs, died.

t is no secret that hashers and beer have a long history together. Even the original rules as written back in 1950 clearly state that one of the objects of the Hash House Harriers is “to acquire a good thirst and to satisfy it with beer.” For those planning to journey to Hawai’i for the one-week hash cruise in October, you will have the grand opportunity to ‘wet your whistle’ on many of the local breweries. While hundreds of beers are imported and available throughout the islands, many of the islands have their own breweries. We plan to serve up some of these fine brews during the cruise, in the spirit of aloha. The following links are provided in case you would like to do some self-study before arriving . . . or to encourage you to come over for a visit.

On Oahu, we have: Aloha Beer Company http://alohabeer.com/ - Aloha Beer embodies the classic Hawaiian lifestyle. With the generous spirit of Aloha as a namesake, this is a premium beer that combines the smooth balance of ohana with the refreshing, hang-loose attitude of a Sunday barbecue. Every bottle of ‘Hawaii’s Beer’ is a heartfelt ‘wish you were here’ message from the Islands of Aloha. We can’t create a Hawaiian sunrise, but we can brew the next best thing.

Home of the Brave Brewing http://www.hotbbc.com/ - A new home grown microbrewery that feature their original Pilot Pale Ale & Remember Pearl Harbor 70th Anniversary Commemorative Dark Lager.

Honolulu Beerworks http://www. honolulubeerworks.com/ - The Beerworks features nine different beers brewed on the premises, including Ales, IPAs, Stout, an ESB, and their flagship Pia Mahi’ai Honey Citrus Saison “Farmers Beer”

rom hard-core to newbie Hashers, adventure-seekers the world over will never forget the mysterious Hash trails of the steaming Sarawak, Borneo jungle, where fierce headhunters once roamed hundreds of years ago on the world’s third largest island. When speaking of Borneo, the first ideas that spring to mind are the long houses, ancient rainforests, magnificent culture and adventure, and of course headhunters.
