NASH HASH IN THE YEAR OF THE D

by Haggis

T

he 11th All China Nash Hash was held in Hong Kong on Friday 7th to Sunday 9th September and in respect to the Chinese calendar it was themed, the Year of the Dragon. The event attracted over 350 Hashers and Harriettes from all over China and Asia and also from countries as far afield as Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

ashington DC has long been recognized as a hashing “megacenter”. There are about a dozen active kennels in the area, each with its own distinct flavor along with specific customs and traditions. Many hashers run regularly with more than one hash, but few run with them all. Each week, hundreds of hashers run trails across the DC metro area. DC’s Red Dress Run hosts over 600 hashers year after year. Throughout the year, area

kennels host multiple AGM’s, camping trips, holiday parties, ski trips, hash-olympics, beach weekends, green dress runs, pub crawls, tubing trips, lingerie runs, a hash-a-thon, and the DC Beer Mile. Most of these events take a great deal of planning by the host kennel and may focus mainly on their own members. The DC Full Moon H3 runs monthly and asks area kennels to take turns hosting. In fact, the Full Moon’s motto is “gathering of the clans” as they encourage cross-pollination of the various

he Las Vegas hashing community hosted their ninth and most successful annual Red Dress Run this past October. The weekend kicked off on Friday night with a Halloween costume ball. Prizes were awarded for the best group, scariest, sexiest, and most original costumes. A group of hashers from the Portland, Oregon took the prize for best group after arriving in mass as garden gnomes. There was much controversy from the runner up, a large group od San Diego hashers who arrived as the cast of the famous video game, Super Mario Brothers.

CONTENTS

The popularity of the Las Vegas Red Dress Run has been rapidly growing since 2003. The event saw a 30% increase of attendees over the previous year. Adios attributes the increase to the 2011 America’s Interhash in Savannah, “so many of the new boots from last year said they planned to return, and I think we got back all the people we lost to Savannah,” says Adios, “every year people come and have a great time, when they go home they tell their friends and those friends are registering the following year.” Attendance was limited to 500, and there is talk of decreasing this number for the 2013 event.

essex Hashers run in the AngloSaxon kingdom of Wessex. Throughout Dorset up to Wiltshire and Hampshire we run through rolling countryside, around scenic harbour routes and along dramatic cliffs.

What’s your sort of hash? 6 to 8 miles with some fast frontrunners FRB’s? A 3 mile gentle jog or walk? Devious Hares? Up to your neck in shiggy? Or, straight into the pub for coffee, lunch and maybe even a cream tea? Lame, weary, hung-over and bloody idle! At the Wessex we cater for all sorts of hashers!

ashing is usually a short affair of a few hours that almost always ends at a cozy bar nearby where one can enjoy the rest of the day with cool drinks - including beer, of course. Exhausting nevertheless! The word exhaustion does not apply to two fellows from South Africa who are attempting to conquer the Mekong as we Hashers do — on foot, only they will take a little bit longer! Starting on November 3, David Crombie and Mark Barron will attempt to run along the Mekong River close to its banks, from the Lao side of the

adrid HHH will be welcoming hashers from around Europe to their famous Javea Weekend, 15-17 February 2013, which they have hosted almost every year since 1994. Javea is located on the Spanish Costa Blanca, approximately half way between Valencia and Alicante. It is a popular seaside resort town with plenty to do and see. There will be beachfront hotels, Paella and other fabulous Spanish Food, and of course, plenty of beer! From the 2010 run report of the Saturday run, “runners braved the thistles, river crossings, broken ankles, gun wielding locals, cunning fish hooks and oncoming trains. Everything is possible on a MH3 trail! Fortunately all the runners made it safely to the beer stop. Entertainment included Karaoke, an on after at the Marilyn Manson Pub, a toilet seat in the circle, Hash Olympics and some lethal Blue Vodka. What is in store for 2012!?

CONTENTS

The Madrid hash was founded by Ken Humphries on 21 May, 1984. Ken formally hashed with the Mother Hash in Kuala Lumpur, so this makes MH3 a direct descendent of the Mother Hash. The MH3 runs every Sunday, yet they also run every other Friday night. On the first Friday of every month, there is 56 HARRIER

ravel is indeed purported to broaden the mind, at least according to the popular proverb to that effect said to have originated in early 20th Century Italy; although G.K. Chesterton pithily observed in 1921 that, “They say travel broadens the mind; but you must have the mind.”

CONTENTS

Unsure of whether or not I satisfied Chesterton’s criterion (after all, most hashers claim to have half a mind at best) I nonetheless recently found myself with the opportunity to temporarily depart my long-time home in Bangkok for a trip to the sundrenched land of my birth: Australia. (Astute readers of this column will note that in addition to my onerous duties on the staff at Harrier Mag I am also employed as an English teacher here in the Land of Smiles. To those who would question the suitability of someone with my antipodean origins for such a job I simply offer my standard explanation, “In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is King.”) Thus it was that I vacated the stately On the Ice offices - first bar stool on the left as you enter Lolita’s bar - for three weeks in Oz. And an agreeable three weeks they were. I spent the 90 HARRIER
