Nash Hash included a pre-lube run on the Thursday with the Royal South Side Hash and a hangover run on the Monday with the Kowloon Hash, so for those that could arrive early and leave late there were 5 days of Hashing including a total of 18 trails. The Hashing was varied as befits Hong Kong with trails through jungle, over mountains, across rivers, past villages and local landmarks. There was something for every level of Hasher and the choice of trails included walker’s,

Riders navigated narrow, concrete single-track paths and dirt tracks through the vegetable fields and orchards of historic New Territories villages in the heartland of the Six-Day War of 1899 (the outcome of which was British possession of the New Territories until 1997). ith thriving HHH clubs in Hanoi, Saigon and Vung Tau, a reader recently asked about the Vietnam Railway system as a way to get from one end of Vietnam to the other. The North-South train line runs along Vietnam’s long coastline, making for some terrific scenery along the way.

TRAIN CLASSES: Best: Take the “soft bed” (four persons to a compartment), with a table, an electrical outlet, window and locking door. If you really want some privacy, book all four berths for two people and sleep on the bottom berths.

sitting up in a chair. The car is likely to be full of locals, babies and possibly a pet or two. Whatever class you book, it is advisable to take a clean t-shirt to cover your pillow, and a cotton or silk “body bag” so you are not on the train’s sheets or blanket. Members of the train staff commonly nap in the empty berths, so the bunks are less than acceptably clean.

The Dining Car: There is a dining car open for unspecified hours (open an hour after the train departs). Electrical outlets are non-existent in the dining car-unless you can convince 3rd class (cattle car): a seat the cashier to plug you in to in an overnight train. Not the electrical outlet behind the recommended unless you counter. have no money, and can sleep

The Hanoi HHH Pub: Since the demise of the much loved “Spotted Cow from the Hanoi hashing scene, a suitable replacement has yet to be found. Hashers during InterMekong Hash 2012 used the Blah Blah Bar as the hash pub, but seating was limited to 20 or less.

Hotels in Hanoi and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City): There are thousands of HHH friendlyhotels of all price ranges Da Nang- the halfway point in these cities. A clean, secure between northern and southern air-conditioned room with a Vietnam. TVand a private bathroom is not hard to find.

Vietnam and South Vietnam. The country was unified and Vietnam became one country after fighting the French and their successors for more than 75 years, and fighting other oppressors for hundreds of years. Persistence has got to be a Vietnamese virtue.

Located adjacent to the train station, the Faifo Hotel is the most convenient place for train travelers to check in on arrival at the Da Nang station from Hanoi or Ho Chi MInh City (Saigon). Da Nang is the halfway point between Hanoi in the north and HCM in the I was greeted at the Faifo Hotel, by a lovely Vietnamese south. lady who was the English In what is referred to locally speaking receptionist and as the “American War, Da front office manager. It was raining, so I left my hotel supplied umbrella to dry in the “entry” room which was complete with its own sofa and closets (room for fellow hashers?). The bedroom was of ample size, clean, comfortable, and I did get a good night’s sleep.. The bathroom had a tub, shower and amenities including tooth brushes, soap, shampoo, combs, cotton buds, and a shower cap.

I was shown two rooms, one for $30 and one for $40, including breakfast which is served from 6:00 AM8:00 AM each morning. I splurged for the larger room, mostly because of a larger bathroom, an extra bed (for my luggage), and a balcony with The free WiFi worked best in an unobstructed view of Hai the lobby, but it was erratic in Phong Street (nothing to write my room and in the restaurant.

CONTENTS

The TV had a good variety of local and western channels including BBC, CNN, HBO, ESPN and about 30 other channels. The Faifo Hotel is evidently a hot spot for the local ballroom dancing group, and there was a Halloween Party on the night I arrived. There is also Karaoke and a massage parlor connected to the property. I didn’t try the Karaoke, but I can say that Vietnamese massage (200,000 VND or under US$10 for an hour) is full of percussion...just a bit less than the beating you might get in your normal, run

of the mill of the street fight. All of the endings (HJ, BJ & :-)) are available at a price, although I cannot comment on the quality as I declined this tempting offer. I had a lovely breakfast with one of the owners, a Vietnamese lady who has lived and traveled all over the USA. She’s doing her best to teach the front desk staff to speak English, and to understand the expectations of international travelers. This is no easy task for many Vietnamese who are a bit clueless about western hotel standards.

Would I stay at the Faifo Hotel again? Absolutely yes. I’m looking forward to my next trip to Da Nang when I plan to take in some of the sights, including the infamous “Charley Don’t Surf” China Beach, made famous in the movie “Good Morning Vietnam.” An Aussie reportedly rents surfboards there, so I might even paddle out for a few waves.

ust about any time of the year there is some special hash event on the books in the northern environs of Thailand. Most of it is centered in Chiang Mai but regional events like the Lanna runs also need to be considered. With 4 Hash Kennels in Chiang Mai it makes sometimes difficult to find a slot for yet another event. Just recently during a meeting of the Chiang Mai Happy Hash it was impossible to come up with a date for an outstation in the immediate future. Looking at the upcoming events - apart from Chiang Mai regular runs on Saturdays, Sundays and Monday and Tuesday at alternate weeks - makes all of this clear:

ashington DC has long been recognized as a hashing “megacenter”. There are about a dozen active kennels in the area, each with its own distinct flavor along with specific customs and traditions. Many hashers run regularly with more than one hash, but few run with them all. Each week, hundreds of hashers run trails across the DC metro area. DC’s Red Dress Run hosts over 600 hashers year after year. Throughout the year, area

kennels host multiple AGM’s, camping trips, holiday parties, ski trips, hash-olympics, beach weekends, green dress runs, pub crawls, tubing trips, lingerie runs, a hash-a-thon, and the DC Beer Mile. Most of these events take a great deal of planning by the host kennel and may focus mainly on their own members. The DC Full Moon H3 runs monthly and asks area kennels to take turns hosting. In fact, the Full Moon’s motto is “gathering of the clans” as they encourage cross-pollination of the various

hash groups. Each kennel provides an “Ambassador” to help coordinate the many activities. To further the goal of intermingling the groups, Full Moon coordinates the “Tour duh Hash”. The Tour is the largest hash event in the area, in that it includes nearly every kennel and runs for 9 (or even 10) consecutive days. The beauty of it is that it doesn’t require massive amounts of planning and logistics normally associated with large events.

Instead, each kennel plans their normal weekly run as they do each week, except that they plan for 30-40 additional hashers. The Tour started in 2007 when one new GM didn’t think he had much “hashxperience” and set out to run with each area kennel. In the summertime, when the Whitehouse Hash switches to Monday nights, and when there’s a Full Moon run on Friday, you can literally run every single day of the week. The thought of hashing with

every kennel over consecutive days morphed into the idea to invite everyone along and invade each hash. That first year, 14 fools managed to complete every stage of the Tour. That was so much fun that the area’s GMs decided to do it again the next year. Since then, It has become an annual tradition that is easily planned and executed. Each kennel plans and organizes their own regular hash. They provide the hares, plan their trails, collect hash cash, and run the circle with their own songs, customs,

and traditions like they do every week. This year, the Tour included two new kennels - the Charm City H3 and the ladies-only DC Red Tent H3. Charm City kicked things off on a Friday night in Baltimore with a great trail along the waterfront. Mount Vernon H3 picked things up on Saturday morning with a trail in Springfield VA. A green jersey goes to one of the hash elders or a hasher with the greatest number of runs with that kennel, and the yellow jersey goes to the leading FRB. At the end of the week, the shirts are pretty nasty. They’re awarded to someone who’s completed every stage of the tour that

year and who embodies the spirit of the hash. In all, 35 fools completed every leg of the Tour this year. We travelled across the area, North to South, East to West, inside and outside of the beltway. We ran over 60 miles of trails, drank 20 varieties of beer, sang just about every hash

song you’ve ever heard of, heard countless violations, and added to our hash swag. Mostly, we hit on (or got hit on by) hot hashers that we don’t normally get to run with and expanded our hash circle of friends.

he Las Vegas hashing community hosted their ninth and most successful annual Red Dress Run this past October. The weekend kicked off on Friday night with a Halloween costume ball. Prizes were awarded for the best group, scariest, sexiest, and most original costumes. A group of hashers from the Portland, Oregon took the prize for best group after arriving in mass as garden gnomes. There was much controversy from the runner up, a large group od San Diego hashers who arrived as the cast of the famous video game, Super Mario Brothers.

CONTENTS

The popularity of the Las Vegas Red Dress Run has been rapidly growing since 2003. The event saw a 30% increase of attendees over the previous year. Adios attributes the increase to the 2011 America’s Interhash in Savannah, “so many of the new boots from last year said they planned to return, and I think we got back all the people we lost to Savannah,” says Adios, “every year people come and have a great time, when they go home they tell their friends and those friends are registering the following year.” Attendance was limited to 500, and there is talk of decreasing this number for the 2013 event.

The Las Vegas Red Dress Run is hosted in historic downtown Las Vegas in the Fremont St. area, home to ten legendary casinos, and Viva Vision, perhaps the largest video screen in the world. “Leading hundreds of hounds down the strip wouldn’t offer even half as good an experience,” Adios claims. In the past two years a zip line was even added, “who else has a zip line over their Red Dress Run route?” The Golden Nugget Las Vegas will remain the hash hotel for 2013, with one of the most amazing pools in the city touting a water slide through a live shark aquarium. Many hashers enjoy the poolside atmosphere in the hours before the Red Dress Run. A group rate with the hotel will be offered, but for a limited time. As an incentive to sign up early, Las Vegas Red Dress Run offered a VIP check in for the first 100 hashers to register. The first 100 were able to check in for the Red Dress Run, getting their wristbands and giveaways at the Golden Nugget pool earlier in the day, not at the venue. This option may be available and expanded upon next year.

Proceeds from the Las Vegas Red Dress run are donated to Safe Nest, a local charity operating the only 24-hour emergency shelters in the city for battered women and children. Safe Nest was established in 1977, and is the oldest and largest domestic violence program in Southern Nevada, offering not only shelter but also counseling. Safe Nest has been the charity of choice for the Las Vegas Red Dress Run for over 5 years. This year, the Las Vegas Red Dress Run will donate nearly $8,000 to the charity.

Information can be found at the new website for Hashing in Las Vegas, encompassing all the Las Vegas kennels: http://lasvegashhh.com. Yes, 3000 kilometers! And they want to accomplish this with daily runs of 42 km, which is the classic marathon stretch. Only once a week will they allow themselves to pamper their legs and feet. A day of rest somewhere in the middle of nowhere is planned, but no beer garden visit is on the schedule. Self-restraint and discipline are necessary to push themselves onward. Grilled by the sun and with a seemingly endless road ahead of them, it’s

a grueling endeavor hardly anyone can imagine. They estimate their arrival at the Vietnamese beaches by the end of January 2013 after nearly three months on the “road, which often is nonexistent and may be a path through rice fields, rocky riverbanks or forest trails. The original plan was to start in Tibet, which would have added a mere 1,500 kilometers to the current distance. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), the Chinese authorities did not allow this to happen on their territory. The presence of foreigners is now completely banned in Tibet. This type of event was also unprecedented in Laos, so officials were puzzled when approached for a permit, but they seemed to like the idea and after some marathon-like runs were held, the permit was approved. Cambodia and Vietnam quickly gave our runners free passage and rubberstamped the itinerary.

CONTENTS

The outdoor adventure specialist, Green Discovery Laos, has been involved from the very beginning in the planning of the itinerary and is in charge of logistics. A company support vehicle will follow the athletes carrying their tents and other personal equipment, providing food, surveying alternate routes if deemed necessary, and be ready in case of an emergency. David and Mark will spend their nights in small tents, or may find lodging at a homestay in villages along the way. If a place appears too inhospitable, the support vehicle may transport them to a nearby guesthouse if one exists, returning them the next morning to the exact location that they left the day before. No cheating allowed! For Mark, a veterinarian by profession, this kind of endurance run is his first. His participation is the more remarkable because

he has already surpassed his 58th birthday. In contrast, David is an “old hand” at endurance runs, though he is slightly younger in age. He has done similar, though not as devilish, runs in several parts of the world before – the Kalahari Desert in South Africa, the Himalayas in Nepal, and the Brazilian Amazon jungle. David, by the way, is “predestined” for such an endeavor since he is a sports physician and knows his limits very well. But why are these two fellows doing all this? To satisfy their alter egos? Not really. The reason behind enduring this hardship is as simple as it is honorable. South Africa, their home country, is severely plagued by the HIV/Aids epidemic and, as a health professional, David came across many, many children who suffered from this disease, innocently infected and often living in orphanages after their parents succumbed to the virus. To help these poor children, David founded the “Endurance Challenge Charity Trust” (ECCT) and is raising awareness, as well as funding, through his highly publicized runs.

CONTENTS

The Mekong River Run has been scheduled in such a way that the two will pass through Vientiane on December 1. This date coincides with World Aids Day. On David’s suggestion, a Mini Mekong River Run is planned, spearheaded by him and Mark. “I wished to see a sea of joyful children joining us” he wrote. With a little help from the Lao Ministry of Education and Sports, a sea of children will certainly be mobilized. Still, sponsors have to be found to make this happen. Ideas are plentiful. Some celebrities with high appeal to the youngsters have already hinted at their participation in the event. The five kilometer mini marathon in Vientiane will be exclusively a Lao affair. The event aims to highlight the Lao Green Care

Fund, an initiative of Green Discovery. This nonprofit entity raises funds from all walks of society to organize educational two-day outdoor trips for urban children of lower secondary schools. Around 40 youngsters with an entourage of teachers and parents spend a weekend at a tent “village” at Tad Leuk of the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area, where they get age-related lectures by volunteer faculty members of the Lao university. They learn about the complexity of the forest environment and its value for people living in the distant city, biodiversity, wildlife protection, and other relevant issues. Experienced animators create fun for participants with meaningful games and team building exercises. Trekking tours teach the children to appreciate nature through active engagement.(www.greencarelaos.org) In view of the purpose of David and Mark’s run, two small associations active in Laos on the HIV/Aids issue are also invited to shed some light on their important initiatives and to raise more awareness about the Aids problem worldwide and in Laos. The whole event focuses on the problems young people face in a modern society and the alternatives available to them.

Madrid Bush Hashing by King Sir Sir James

adrid HHH will be welcoming hashers from around Europe to their famous Javea Weekend, 15-17 February 2013, which they have hosted almost every year since 1994. Javea is located on the Spanish Costa Blanca, approximately half way between Valencia and Alicante. It is a popular seaside resort town with plenty to do and see. There will be beachfront hotels, Paella and other fabulous Spanish Food, and of course, plenty of beer! From the 2010 run report of the Saturday run, “runners braved the thistles, river crossings, broken ankles, gun wielding locals, cunning fish hooks and oncoming trains. Everything is possible on a MH3 trail! Fortunately all the runners made it safely to the beer stop. Entertainment included Karaoke, an on after at the Marilyn Manson Pub, a toilet seat in the circle, Hash Olympics and some lethal Blue Vodka. What is in store for 2012!?

CONTENTS

The Madrid hash was founded by Ken Humphries on 21 May, 1984. Ken formally hashed with the Mother Hash in Kuala Lumpur, so this makes MH3 a direct descendent of the Mother Hash. The MH3 runs every Sunday, yet they also run every other Friday night. On the first Friday of every month, there is 56 HARRIER

a run from their favoured watering hole, Larry’s. Of course it is known as, “Fank Fuck it´s First Friday at Fat Larrys” or FFFFF Run! There is a short run followed by “Drink till you Drop”! One the third Friday of every month a hasher opens up his home to the group for the Turd Friday run. The Madrid Hash is full of characters, and here are some “Hare of the Dog” type stories. The Madrid hash has experiedince everything from wedding proposals in the circle to babies almost being born on trail to dinners interrupted by bandits at gun point.

CONTENTS

Once upon a time, approximately 15 years ago, a female Hasher named MORE KNICKERS married a male Hasher, SHAKESPHEAR, and as it sometimes happens, a year later she was ready to give birth to their first child. One Sunday, a very pregnant MORE KNICKERS attended the MH3 Run with her husband. Just as they arrived home, her water broke, and so they calmly continued on to the hospital. Soon thereafter, GINGER, a red haired baby girl was born. Since the Madrid Hash is so much fun, you never want to miss a week of the craziness. Therefore one week later, the following Sunday, MORE KNICKERS and SHAKESPHEAR arrived with on the Hash with their baby girl. Now that is a LOYAL Hasher!

Also some years ago, the Madrid Hash had a Hasher, English by birth, whose Hash name is Cunning Stunt. Many stories abound about CS, yet the most remembered is when he made a surprise proposal to his girl friend at the circle in the mud and pouring rain. As she accepted, and they were hugging and kissing, someone brought out a beautiful wedding cake to the sound of TA DA´s-and as this person entered the circle, she slipped in the mud and the cake hit the ground with a splat! All the happy couple could do was join in the laughter of the group! Now they are married with 3 kids, and living and working in Rio de Janeiro. In 2000, Madrid hash hosted its 1000th run, and 350 Hashers attended the event. During the Saturday night entertainment after the meal, Sir Le Pro, one of the original hashers on the MH3, grabbed the mike from the MC and proceeded to announce that as he and his wife, Lady Godmother, had attended the 25th run of the MH3 in 1984. He called her forward to present to her the 25th Run T-shirt. As she walks up to the front, cat calls, whistles, and shouts of “take it off” are heard from the audience. She leans next to Sir Le Pro and says in a whisper (heard by many up front with her), “I am not wearing a bra”. She may have also added an expletive, yet I missed that. One should note here that MH3 members are not big on flashing ones tits. (Of course it is OK for any frisky visitors.) Ad midst all the shouts,

she turns her back on the crowd, pulls her T-shirt over her head, exposing her bare back to the crowd. However, her bare front was there in its full glory for the band, and even better, the video camera!! (and me). After realizing this, she puts on her new T-shirt, turns back to the disappointed crowd, smiles and bows. However, the entire Madrid Hash was able to enjoy the video later!!

Apparently, the debauchery of the 1000th continued as there was more nudity the buses on the way back to town. The bus drivers feigned shock and disbelief, and insisted we pay them extra or they would denounce us to the police! The bus organizer, a highly moral Irishman, who teaches at the school served by the same bus company, gave in. Yes, we had to pay extra for the misbehavior, ostensibly for extra clean up of the buses!! As the buses were leaving the car park, a female hasher from the UK mooned the buses as the rest of the hash waved good-bye. Finally, Rat With a Snatch writes about one of the most memorable moments of MH3, which took place at one the annual gala dinners. It just so happened that the restaurant at which the event took place was held up at gunpoint, while the MH3 was in the middle of a Spice Boys act. It took a while for the gunman to register that the five men to his left were sporting wigs and codpieces, with knees at half-cock ‌ the

song “Wannabe” probably didn’t help his cause either. He was also a tad put out that, rather than heed his request to produce cash and jewellery; everything, including glasses and cutlery, seemed to have disappeared from view completely. Indeed an inebriated table at the back of the room was blissfully unaware that anything was amiss and thought he was part of the act. After a half-hearted attempt at swiping a camera from a nearby table and finally relinquishing it back to its owner, the gunman disappeared from sight in a somewhat dejected panic. Never underestimate the power of Hash Acts.

CONTENTS

His accomplices made off with thousands of Euros worth in booty from the rest of the restaurant, however, the only thing the MH3 lost was one of its members, a certain Hasher who scuttled out the back door while events were unfolding, although unfortunately forgetting to take his girlfriend with him. And who said chivalry was dead on the Hash?

ravel is indeed purported to broaden the mind, at least according to the popular proverb to that effect said to have originated in early 20th Century Italy; although G.K. Chesterton pithily observed in 1921 that, “They say travel broadens the mind; but you must have the mind.”

CONTENTS

Unsure of whether or not I satisfied Chesterton’s criterion (after all, most hashers claim to have half a mind at best) I nonetheless recently found myself with the opportunity to temporarily depart my long-time home in Bangkok for a trip to the sundrenched land of my birth: Australia. (Astute readers of this column will note that in addition to my onerous duties on the staff at Harrier Mag I am also employed as an English teacher here in the Land of Smiles. To those who would question the suitability of someone with my antipodean origins for such a job I simply offer my standard explanation, “In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is King.”) Thus it was that I vacated the stately On the Ice offices - first bar stool on the left as you enter Lolita’s bar - for three weeks in Oz. And an agreeable three weeks they were. I spent the 90 HARRIER

The first was a comment by Sydney Morning Herald journalist Peter FitzSimons, a former rugby union international and fellow old boy of Wesley College as it happens. Fitzy hailed as his “quote of the year” a comment from US congressman Dick Amery. Asked if being caught pants down, Clinton-style would force him to resign, he replied, “If I had been in the President’s place I would not have gotten [sic] the chance to resign. I would have been lying in a pool of my own blood, looking up and listening to my wife ask, “How do you reload this son of a bitch?” A pretty funny comment, and good of Fitzy to spot it. It is just a shame that Congressman Dick Amery made that comment

majority of my time consuming as much lamb and as many Sydney rock oysters as I could get well-meaning friends to pay for, washing the lot down with copious amounts of good South Australian red. In between times, I managed to attend a couple of Rugby World Cup matches and also watch the Australian cricket team wallop Zimbabwe. What has this to do with the stated purpose of this column, namely to highlight general acts of stupidity in the Hash world and beyond? Not a lot actually, except for the fact that being abroad allowed me to note a number of issues in the Australian and world press that might have otherwise gone unnoticed and that I feel compelled to bring to the attention of readers.

in 1998. Ah well, news always was a little slow getting to Oz - a definite seat on the ice for Fitzy should he ever show up in Bangkok. Speaking of ice, whilst in Sydney I also noted that Australia ‘s National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre had recently identified a grave issue about which it felt compelled to issue a warning, particularly to “clubgoers.” There is no physiological benefit (and maybe a great harm), according to the Centre, in attempting to revive drug-overdosers by administering ice-cube enemas. Readers please take note.

CONTENTS

Another interesting development I noted Downunder is that all passenger flights from Australia to the USA are now carrying armed “Sky Marshals”. Hashers taking such flights are encouraged to consider that fact when next contemplating a nude run through business class. One hopes however, that these armed Australian keepers of the trans-Pacific peace are at least a little bit more gun-savvy than most Yanks. When I say that, I have the following two people in mind. Firstly, Jonathan Rodriguez, 17, of Delaware who, during a recent attempted home invasion, attempted to batter down a door with the butt of his pistol, discharging it into his groin. Secondly, Detroit Police officer Michael Allen, 22, who attempted to conceal his handgun whilst crossing the Canadian border by cramming it under his seat, shooting himself in the thigh in the process. Surely both men merit a soothing seat on the ice the moment they get out of the hospital. Perhaps the most entertaining thing I encountered during my recent trawls through the Australian press however, relates not to events of current stupidity or even to current events. Rather I refer to the reporting

of the recent opening of files previously held secret by the British government.

Auzzie Kuntfu, ‘Merican Bimbo, Belgian HHHiggins, & Wild Wolf

Among the fairly routine correspondence files of the UK Foreign Office, astute researchers located the following gem, which I commend to the attention of all hashers. It is a short letter from Sir Archibald Clerk Kerr, the British Ambassador in Moscow to his friend Lord Pembroke at the Foreign Office in London. Dated 6th April 1943, it was written during the darkest days of the Second World War and shows that even in the direst circumstances, at a time when even hashing had been put on hold until the menace of fascism could be defeated, men could still retain a sense of humour. I quote it below in its entirety.

My Dear Reggie, In these dark days man tends to look for little shafts of light that spill from Heaven. My days are probably darker than yours, and I need, my God I do, all the light I can get. But I am a decent fellow, and do not want to be mean and selfish about what little brightness is shed upon me from time to time. So I propose to share with you a tiny flash that has illuminated my somber life and tell you that God has given me a new Turkish colleague whose card tells me that he is called Mustapha Kunt. We all feel like that, Reggie, now and then, especially when Spring is upon us, but few of us would care to put it on our cards. It takes a Turk to do that. Yours, Archie.

King Sir Sir James

CONTENTS

Sir Sir James joined the Madrid Hash in March 1990, and has not looked back. Hashing is a passion of his. Several months after joining the hash, he went to Portugal and was “Knighted” Sir James in The Imperial Military Constantinian Order of St. George! The story of this order is long and boring, and possibly even now defunct. He was named “Sir James” shortly thereafter. The extra Sir and the King were added in later years. King Sir Sir James has attended several Interhashes and Eurohashes, and is still running at 73.
