Best Events of 2013: Europe

UROHASH: The European event of the year is easily Eurohash, held on 16-18 August. The Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn hashes will be hosting this ambitious event, cruising between 3 different countries on, you guessed it, cruise ships. The weekend will start in Finland, cruise to Estonia for a pub crawl in the fairy tale city of Tallinn and a Saturday run along the Baltic Sea. The Saturday night dinner and party will be on a posh cruise ship, and finally the hashers will wake up on Sunday morning in beautiful Stockholm. They advertise 3 days, 3 hashes, 3 countries and 3 hangovers. Are you up for the challenge? http:// eurohash.hopto.org/ The other top 4 events, as voted on by Europe’s most prolific hash travelers: INTERSCANDIC: The 12th Interscandic Hash will be in Denmark, on 03-05 May. This edition is hosted by The Copenhagen Viking Wankers, or CH3, on the enchanting Island of Bornholm. This island, located in the middle of the Baltic Sea, is the land of enchanted castles, trolls, witches, mermaids and the infamous drink of Gammeldankse. They even have round churches. Join the crazy Danes for a Tubørg or two, at your own risk of course. http://interscandic.dk/

GERMAN NASH HASH: The Munich H3 is famous for their annual Oktoberfest weekend, and in 2012, it was their 20th anniversary. This year, they will be hosting the German Nash Hash in the beautiful countryside of Oberbayern,

on the edge of the German Alps. Based in the picturesque spa town of Bad Tölz on the banks of the Isar River, the town is known for its witch burnings! Don’t worry, witches are probably safe as long as they stay amongst the hashers. http:// www.munich-h3.com/index.php/german-nashhash-2013 BELGIAN NASH HASH: There is a small yet spirited country, referred to as the Heart of Europe, called Belgium. In 2014, Brussels, Belgium will the host of Europe’s largest party of the decade. Yet in 2013, you can sample the good food and excellent beer at the Belgian Nash Hash in Bokrijk, 19-21 April. Join the famous Brussels Manneke Piss Hashers, drink beer from the nearby Haacht Brewery and run trail through the lush countryside of Limburg, where you will see windmills, sheep, and of course, Flanders’ largest open air playground. http://www.bmph3. com/BNH/2013/index.html UK NASH HASH: This year’s UK premiere event will be hosted by Hardy’s H3 on 24-26 August at the Mediaeval Hooke Court in the village of Hooke near Beaminster. The historic Manor House was converted in 1994 into a family owned educational centre with an international reputation for excellence both in its facilities and accommodation. It is billed as “the most historic, oldest and most beautiful UK Nash Hash venue so far”. There is also camping for those who fancy the outdoors. The weekend festivities will initiated by a red dress run on Thursday night. http://www.geoffkirby.co.uk/NashHash2013/html/the_venue.html

There are also 4 honorable mentions, that received a lot of votes: BERGEN KILLER HILL: Bergen H3 hashes on the West Coast of Norway amongst mountains and fjords. In the medieval times, probably due to the lack of something better to do, the people of Bergen started climbing the seven mountains surrounding their city. Don’t worry, the hashers only conquer one hill on the weekend, and this year it will be the Lyderhorn (396 m) on 24 -26 May. If you feel like fresh air, mountaineering, stunning views and of course drinking beer, the BH3 welcomes you to a truly unique Hash Run with one of the World’s most northerly Hash Clubs. http://bh3.org/killer_hill_information.html
famous Javea Weekend, 15-17 February 2013, which they have hosted almost every year since 1994. Javea is located on the beautiful Spanish Costa Blanca, approximately half way between Valencia and Alicante. It is a popular seaside resort town with plenty to do and see. There will be beachfront hotels, Paella and other fabulous Spanish Food, and of course, plenty of beer! In 2010, the entertainment included an on after at the Marilyn Manson Pub, a toilet seat in the circle, Hash Olympics and some lethal Blue Vodka. What is in store for 2012!? www.madridhhh.com/
VINDOBONA 1650: On 17-19 May, the Vindobona Hash House Harriers, normally located in Vienna, will be celebrating their 1650th Anniversary in Krems an der Donau in Lower Austria at the confluence of the Krems river and the Danube. Vindobona is famous for their quality weekends, with good food, live bands and a variety of drink options. This year, hashers will experience the Crème de la Krems and will run through the vineyards of the beautiful Wachau valley and drink the famous apricot brandy. www.viennahash.org/events/v1650InfoSheet.html
CORRESPONDANTS CHOICE: THE 20TH JUBILEE FRANKFURT VINEYARD HASH WEEKEND IN PORTUGAL: On 2-6 October. Well, it is actually more than a weekend. Automatic Balls and Hash Travel bring you 5 days of fun in Porto, Portugal. Some of the highlights include a cruise down the Douro River, a “Lady” Tournament (whatever that is), traditional dance instruction, a morning of working the vineyards, wine tastings and finally a hangover trail through the Passeio Alegre Gardens in Porto. www.bembeltown.de/VineyardHash/
ZAGREB SPA WEEKEND: On 08-10 February The Zagreb HHH hosts its annual Croatian Carnival Spa Weekend, where there are runs though charming villages in the snow, followed by a circle and lunch in an outdoor mineral bath. Remember to beware of the green monsters made of algae! The evening continues with a dinner in a local lodge followed by dancing. One can warm up from the cold in one of the many saunas and indoor mineral baths or relax with a massage. This year the ZHHH welcomes you to Jezercica Spa in Toplice-Donja Stubica. www.zagrebhash.com/runs/tuhelj-run-2012/

sia is the birthplace of the Hash House Harriers and a mecca that attracts hash pilgrims from all over the world. Although hashing has spread across the globe over the last 75 years, those who started their hashing careers in the Orient never seem to forget their Asian roots.
Kuala Lumpur provided some fine terrain for the birth of hashing in 1938, as it still does today. Asia plays host to some of the best HHH events in the world in 2013 and offers something to entice anyone who likes to travel.

here are so many great hash events in the US each year that it is hard to pick out a mere five as the best. What do you look for in a hash event; beer, trails, entertainment, location? These five events offer the best of those elements based on the overwhelming popularity with hashers nationwide. If you’re looking to update your US hash event bucket list, look no further.
Simply known as Betty Ford Rehab, the Orange County HHH have been hosting this infamous event in Palm Springs, California for 27 consecutive years. This fun filled weekend starts on Friday nights with a lingerie run around the town followed by dinner and dancing. As the poolside drinking continues, the opening ceremonies begin Saturday afternoon with appearances by the past year’s dead celebrities. Trail begins soon after the opening ceremony and is again followed by dinner, skits, and dancing to The Hash Band. Sunday’s activities include a hangover hash, circle, and lunch. March 8-10, 2013. http://www.ochhh.com/ InterAmerica’s Hash 2013 will be hosted by Panama over Labor Day weekend. Their slogan, “come hash the tropics” sums up what attendees will find on this isthmus paradise. The Panama HHH is promising beaches, shiggy, and small town hospitality. Once again the San Antonio HHH will host the Texas Interhash this May 3-5, 2013 in Kerrville, Texas. This year’s event dubbed “cheap and easy” is promising great entertainment including hash Olympics, theme nights, skits, and a pageant. On their shiggy-filled trails you’ll surely earn a thirst and a Texas sized appetite, so the SAH3 is arranging for food trucks at the venue. Food trucks? Well, since feeding
300 hungry hashers is no easy task, the SAH3 will have these trucks so hashers may eat at their will. Best Events of 2013: Africa
P
by Digit ut simply (which is the only way to put anything when dealing with Hashers), Hashing in Africa is as good as it gets. The continent is bloody enormous. You can fit the USA, western Europe, Australia, China, Argentina and a few insignificant odds and sorts like the UK and France into Africa. 20 years ago, only a few Hash clubs existed in Africa, but today virtually every country – and there are 55 of them – has at least one kennel. Africa has bid for Interhash four times. Durban bid in 1998 at Interhash KL against Hobart, but it wasn’t really a serious bid. Then Nairobi Hash began its famous onslaught to host the event at Chiang Mai in 2006, followed by sterling presentations in Perth in 2008 and Kuching in 2010. But they could never crack Asian solidarity and finally gave up, having come second in each of their efforts. Without rancor, they threw a massive consolation event called the Great Hash MigratiOnOn at Mombasa in May 2012. It attracted over 800 participants and remains the largest ever Hash event on the continent. But from Accra to Asmara, from Casablanca to Cape Town, from Juba to Johannesburg, from Kinshasa to Khartoum – Hashing is alive, well and growing on the Dark Continent. And the best part about Africa is that it’s full of Africans – the loveliest and friendliest people on earth. So come on down! Here is a taste of what you can expect from the African Hashing in 2013.

he Lucky 13th Eurohash 2013 will be held on 16-18 Augest. It is not only the European event of the year, yet it is one of the more ambitious hash weekends planned this century. A Eurohash Booze Cruise was an idea formulated by Standing Ovation of Stockholm. When Ingrid Larsson originally stood up in Antalya in 2009 and described to the hashing world what they wanted to do, we all thought they were mad. Yet four years later, with all of the fabulous news letters from Ingrid Larsson, we are anticipating a hash event to remember. The Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn hashes will be hosting the event, cruising between 3 different countries on; you guessed it, cruise ships. The event starts on Friday at 15:00 with a run through Helsinki followed by a two hour booze cruise to the fairytale town of Tallinn, Estonia. Join the flocks of Finns who gather in the charming old town to consume beer at a very good price. The Saturday ball breakers should maybe not be so enthusiastic about the beer prices on Friday night, as an intense workout awaits them on Saturday morning at the Old Soviet Männiku military training camp, complete with trenches and tank dugouts. The ball breakers will also enjoy a sandy forest area with small
lakes (old quarries). For the less ambitious there are two runs to choose from through the forests, upper class neighbourhoods and the steep Baltic shoreline. The old farts will enjoy a stroll through the old town. The Saturday night dinner and party will be on a posh cruise ship, called the Baltic Queen. For the finale, the hashers will wake up on Sunday morning in beautiful Stockholm for yet another run and circle and even more beer. The organizers advertise 3 days, 3 hashes, 3 countries and 3 hangovers. Are you up for the challenge? http://eurohash.se If this is not enough, there are also Pre-Lubes in Aarhus and Copenhagen, Denmark, followed by a party train to Stockholm and party ferry to Helsinki. According to the organizers,”the Thursday night ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki is going to be a blast. The majority of the registrations we have received to date have decided to join this party.” After the big event, one can enjoy a Post-Lube in Oslo, Norway. That makes six cities, five countries, and as a bonus, one wallop of a hangover. Hashers should start training their livers now. Information about the Pre and Post Lubes will be featured in the next print edition of harrier magazine. Continued in the Digital Suppliment...p. 64

ashing in all parts of Australia is alive and well.
Kuntfoo suggests that you should consider taking your next international hashing holiday at Aussie Nash Hash, May 3 to 5, 2013 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Brisbane is no longer a sleepy back water town; it has morphed into a bright modern town with beautiful weather, nearby beaches, new venues, restaurants and clubs. Yes Brisbane has become of age. This fact has been verified, by those hashers lucky to experience the Australian relaxed and amiable hospitality. Those in Hobart, Tasmania for the celebrated and successful 2000 World Inter Hash, largely attributable to the foresight and the efforts of a veteran Hobart based hasher, Mike “Mad Dog” Bowerman. Australia is that ‘Great Land Down Under’. It is both geographically and culturally isolated from the rest of the world, as an island continent and the sixth largest county on Earth. The former Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating, infamous for his invective, openly declared that this great land was situated at “The arse end of the world!” Because of Australia’s large area there is a wide range of terrain and climatic conditions which are perfect for hashing. The Biannual Aussie Nash Hash 2013 will be held in laid back Queensland at Brisbane, May 3 to 5, 2013.

I
never considered myself a runner and even less a marathoner. But after running and finishing my first full marathon this year, I guess now you can say I am. I had heard people say that when you run a marathon, you either love it or you hate them and it could be your debut and farewell. I was a seasonal runner and would only run/train when I would sign up for runs after giving in to friends’ peer pressure. After finishing each of the 4 half marathons I’ve ran and feeling all that adrenaline that running with other thousands of people gives you; I remember thinking to myself….one day I will run a full marathon. I wanted it to be a special one and in a different country. This past May, I was on my way to China to do the Great Wall Half Marathon for the second time. It is known to be one of the toughest and most challenging adventure runs.

I remembered the course very well. The uneven steps and views from the top of The Wall, the Ying Yang Square where the race starts and finishes; the dirt roads and paved roads, the farmlands and wildlife. But most importantly I remembered the entire families outside their homes cheering us on; the little kids giving us high fives, handing us flowers and running beside us at times. Running along with other people from different countries; which you couldn’t understand their language but they were there for the same purpose. All the new friends I had made! I thought to myself‌ This has to be my first full marathon and experience all of that over again! Sounded like a great idea until I realized that I had not trained to run that distance, ever. Still, inspection day came and I brought my bib number to change events. I upgraded to run the whole thing. I was nervous and very excited at the same time. The athletic committee had previously mentioned that on inspection day; after doing part of the course, hiking the 4k on The Wall; participants most often upgrade to the Full Marathon instead of the other way around. It made me feel more comfortable with my decision. Decision that I am glad I made and will never regret! Running and finishing the Great Wall Marathon changed my life! I learned that anyone can tear down any mental walls, and can accomplish anything you put your mind to it.

I believe I am now an addicted marathoner looking forward to run in every continent!

It has come to my attention that a new hash kennel (or at least something purporting to be such a thing) has sprung up in my home base of Bangkok. This red-headed stepchild of the greater Bangkok hashing community calls itself the Bangkok Thursday Hash. OK, so no points for creativity there, since they do appear to run on Thursdays in Bangkok, but no deduction of points either. From there, however, things get steadily worse. The group bills itself as “the alternative, healthy hash”. Oh dear. It seems (according to the group’s poorly written web page) that they will run only in the city in areas easily accessible from the Bangkok Metro system (“for working people”). Runs will start at 6.30pm (“for working people”). People who cannot do the trail are not welcome (“Fitness is our focus. No bench warmers”). Runs will end at a pub, shop, or convenience store where runners can buy their own drinks (“We don’t
want to encourage people to ‘get their money’s worth’ of beer because they pay a run fee”), and any circle will end at 8.30pm (“for working people, it’s possible to be home by 21:00”). It does get worse but readers wanting to waste time can look up the group themselves. Frankly, this sort of nonsense is an affront to hashing, at least as I know it in South East Asia. Hashing is about running with your mates in interesting areas and drinking afterwards. It is about being part of a community distinct from every day rules and cares. It is not a fitness club for wage slaves who don’t want to get their expensive trainers dirty. It is not for those who want to make sure that no one “takes advantage” of a run fee by drinking more beer than anyone else as this may offend their retarded capitalist principles (leaving aside that, if they were able to succeed in the capitalist system, they wouldn’t be wage slaves in the first place). And it is not for people who need to be home in bed masturbating themselves gently to sleep by 9pm so that they can get up in time to eat some organic muesli before heading off to the office to experience the Pavlovian pleasure that comes from the unspoken approval of their bosses because they showed up on time, just as the bullock learns to yearn for the harness. What are the reasons for all of this, you may ask. Well, the authors speculate that some drinkers are drawn to a “sensation-taking lifestyle” that includes adventurous, extreme styles of exercise. That sounds to me like they are talking about hashing, although not “alternative hashing”. On the other hand, imbibers could be “socializing and drinking after participating in organized group sports.” If that isn’t the hash I don’t know what is. So you see, if our “alternative” friends (readers It seems then that “alternative” hashing means a might care to ponder the meaning of “alternative headlong rush into prissiness, conformity, and a lifestyle” here) are sincere in their professed desires lack of freedom masquerading, as it almost always they might actually wish “to encourage people to does, as freedom. Inaugural Snooky Hash Run On 10 November 2012, a small but elite group of hashers assembled at Charlie Harpers’ bar in downtown Sihanoukville for the Inaugural Snooky Hash Run No. One. Six overseas visitors, five Phnom Penh visitors, one visitor from Laos, and eight locals made up the merry band of twenty. The top of Mt. Sihanoukville made for magnificent sweeping views of Sihanoukville, the ocean, and the surrounding islands. The pack then headed down a shady bush trail to the port area and on to Victory Beach, where ice cold beer and snacks awaited. A memorable circle was then conducted by the renowned GM Armpit. The highlight of the evening occurred whilst en route from the beach to the vehicles, Bimbo fell into a meter deep concrete drainage ditch. Luckily the drain was not damaged. After the circle the hashers moved to Big John’s rooftop bar and restaurant on Victory Hill. The multitude were treated to a huge pile of king prawns served Aussie style (chilled in the shell ), not to mention a buffet including the host’s legendary BBQ Ribs. Many beers were drunk far into the night and there were still prawns left over. The evening chat centered around discussions over what time the Recovery Run should start the next day. In the end the GM +1 made it to the 10 am session. The GM + 5 turned up for the 3 pm session. On On On till after midnight. All are invited to Snooky H3 runs to be held every Saturday, as long as the GM and his hardy group of followers can keep up this ambitious goal. Hedo II H3 is a hash like no other! In 1999, Hooked on Phallics and Kiddie from TBH3 were looking for a fun getaway. Hooked on Phallics’ mom told us to go to Hedonism II in Negril, Jamaica because it is a place that everyone should get to experience. So, we packed up and set off to see if she was right. And, boy she was! The time we spent there was hasher heaven, and I knew that I needed to spread the word to my fellow hashers. Open bar, free watersports, unlimited food and optional nudity was a formula for hasher success. Each year after that I returned bringing some new hashers each time. In 2008, Hedo II H3 was founded by Dr. Doo-Doo from Atlanta H4 and Kiddie from TBH3. Our first hash run was hared by Kiss My Rash from NYH3 and Lunar E-Clit from O2H3. We had

a great trail all around the grounds of the resort, with several drink stops. We had a Pina Colada check at the squash courts, a beer check in the piano bar, a strawberry daquiri check at the hidden hot tub and more. We ended the trail with a ride down the water slide and held circle in a fountain pool. We were able to recruit some virgins too. Each year after that we have grown and added new hasher activities and events. In 2012 we did our first Red Dress Run. It was hared by Lee Marvin from Malaga H3. Our variation on this theme was red lingerie, panties, sarongs, dresses or anything goes. We sang the song “Today is Monday...” , starting at the nude hot tub where we got dressed in our red attire. At each beer stop we sang another verse of the song with new words customized for out trail. We traversed the resort, then went over to Sandals to sing a few hash songs. We ended back at the hot tub and singing for the audience of hot tubbers. The Hedo II H3 slogan is “a running club with a nekkid midnight waterslide problem”. We’ve had
namings, designed tee shirts and created a Hedo II H3 patch. Red Rocket, Wax On Whacks Off, Sixty Sex and Little Twat of Horrors are just a few of the Hedo II H3 hashers we have named at the resort. Our main trail is a turkey/eagle split. The eagle trail leaves the resort, running through the streets of Negril and to the beach. It then meets up with the turkey trail inside the resort. The weather is hot, hot, hot in Jamaica so many of the hashers never want to “leave camp”. So, the turkey trail is perfect for the hashers who don’t want to get fully dressed. Our annual Hedo II H3 event is held during July. The full experience is 7 nights, but some hashers go for more nights, and others for less. Hedonism II is a 22 acre all-inclusive resort located in Negril, Jamaica. The grounds are lush and tropical. The resort has a nude side and a prude side, with garden view, ocean view and jacuzzi rooms. The rooms are basic but have everything you need. The mirrored ceiling is a fun addition. much to do! Hedonism II is an all inclusive resort, so your daily cost includes your accomodations, meals, entertainment, OPEN BAR, scuba diving, waterskiing, sailing, snorkeling, paddle boarding, tennis and lots more. As part of the hasher group we have a hash run, a room crawl, a red dress run, Izzy Dizzy, Tippy Cup, a Craft Beer Social, an erotic gift exchange, a water volleyball tournament, hash tags and goodie bags. Also, every hasher receives an embroidered and personalized ball cap, a tee shirt and a sports bottle. BJ th DJ, a TBH3 hasher is our DJ/VJ for our three private pool parties. Every night at Hedo has a different theme, like Glow Night, Lingerie Night, and Sports Night. It is always a blast to dress up for these fun evenings. Then, each night the Entertainment Crew puts on a show with singing and dancing. Afterwards, everyone socializes, sings at the piano bar and dances in the disco. We piggyback with another fun group called the Fluffernutters. They host special events like
the Cock-N-Tail Party, a body shot competition, nekkid female oil wrestling and a clothing optional Lewd and Crude Pirate Cruise to see the cliff divers at Ricks Cafe. They also supply cases of Red Bull and flavored Vodka just for us. Besides the hashing, suntanning, drinking, socializing, dancing and relaxing we also help the residents of Jamaica. We collect school supplies for the Jamaican school children and contribute to a scholarship fund for the children of Hedonism employees. Our annual hash trip to Hedonism is a hasher dream come true. Hedo is like a summer camp for adults. You can swim, play, eat, drink, sail, snorkel, scuba dive, water ski and join in on whatever activities you want to participate in. Entertainment Coordinators encourage everyone to join in on the contests, dances, and games. Bottles of Appleton Rum are the prize you want to win! Continued from page 22 One might ask which group of mad hashers decided to tackle this undertaking. This would be the hashers from Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn. The following provides some further information on these crazy hashes.
Hashing in Stockholm by Pucko
The Stockholm hash is growing up. In the summer of 2011, Stockholm celebrated 25 years of hashing. The Stockholm Absolute H3 was founded in August 1986 by Jan “Stamps” Ferguson-Karlsson with the assistance of Gösta “Two Pricks” Karlsson and Bertil “Nosslo” Olsson. But it all started in Brussels Belgium. Stamps and Two Pricks met at the Brussels H3 in Belgium, and when they moved back to Sweden they saw a need for a hash club. The first run was set from their home on August 23 1986, and the pack consisted of people with hashing experience from all around the world.
CONTENTS
25 years later, the Stockholm Absolute celebrated its birthday with 60+ old timers, returners and regulars during a wet weekend. Not because of extensive beer consumption, but more due to heavy rain.
66 HARRIER
Stockholm Absolute has reached 630+ runs and is now a weekly hash. The founders are still active, and even show up now and then. It’s a family hash, as animals of all kinds are welcome, including Horrors and Hounds. The run is usually set from someone’s home, and the hare/hares provide food and drinks. Numbers on the runs vary from 15 to 50+, some very keen runners, others more focused on the on-after beer. The runners are mainly Swedes who picked up hashing abroad or British expats. Many Stockholm hashers have hashed all over the world, and attended Interhashes, Eurohashes and other hash events. Stockholm has hosted the Interscandi twice, 1995 and 2005, both events attracting around 150 people, most from neighbouring Scandinavian countries. Stockholm Absolute is no longer the only hash in Stockholm. In the summer of 1994, Harriettes, led by Gunilla “Eye Full” Pileus, thought that the Absolute Hash was becoming a bit too familyoriented, so they founded the Underground Hash that runs every Wednesday night at 1830 from a pub close to an underground station. It is a good combination of running and socializing at the pub. At the start horrors and hounds were not allowed at Underground hash, but today rules are not that strict.

A Brief Version Hashing –
Helsinki
by Man In Black
Helsinki H3 is the oldest hash in Scandinavia, founded by Ulf ‘Dirty Old Man’ Burmeister and Osmo Jalovaara in 1977. They claim to be the third oldest hash in Europe, with an all male policy and a tendency towards rather competitive trails. In case you don’t know, Finland has a very prominent sauna culture. A bunch of Brits building the UK Embassy founded the Helsinki Hash House Harriers and Harriettes H5, who took up the tradition of mixed post-run saunas. For some time there were two hashes running with same name, but the prolonged stay of a certain Cor Blimey helped the H5 to have its own identity. At the turn of the century the annual ‘Hole in the Ice Weekend’, staged every year in February or March, is very popular with visiting hashers. In case you were wondering, this does include a mixed sauna followed by jumping into nearly frozen water. Hopefully the hole in the ice is as close to the Sauna as possible. Helsinki also hosted Interscandi Hash in 2001. The Turku H3 descended from Helsinki H3, and this small kennel claims to be the most northerly Hash in Europe. Who said the fins were long winded?

by G-String
Hashing first reached the fair shores of Estonia when in 1993 Cor ”Blimey” Schouten from the Helsinki H3 organized the first ever Hash run in Tallinn, attended by ragtag group of Finns and besotted Vikings. To their pleasant surprise

they discovered the price of the local brew was almost as cheap as water! Unsurprisingly, in 1996 Blimey led another expeditionary group of Hashers to Estonia, this time to the wastes of the eastern town of Narva for a weekend of frozen debauchery. Yet it wasn’t until the arrival of Bob ”G-String” Filby that the Hash put down firm roots in Estonia. G-String started Hashing in Ankara in 1994 and was the first GM of the resurrected Sarajevo H3 during 1997-98. He sent out the call for all to join in an inaugural run of the Tallinn H3 on Halloween Sunday, 31 October, 1999. And if you start it, they will come! Some 40 persons attended the run, including a large contingent from the Helsinki H5 as well as about fifteen souls from the expat, diplomatic and Estonian communities. G-String and Mike ”Axe Murderer” Tully set the trail through the old town of Tallinn which ended up in a raucous circle next to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building.
CONTENTS
The Tallinn H3 quickly embedded itself in the community with runs every Sunday afternoon in the winter months. During the five ”summer” months, the hash meets weekly, yet the winter runs are now bi-weekly. Although it was rare that the Tallinn H3 drew more than a dozen persons for a run, a regular cast of characters who somehow could not find a life - including G-String (GM), Axe Murderer (RA), Jailbait, Lubrication, Norm, Stains the Couch, Vaseline, Comes Infrequently, Great White Dick, Pouch Potato and Shag-A Wannabe - were soon
showing up most weeks. With frequent visitors from other European Hashes the Tallinn H3 was able to keep its head above the water, if not the beer! The big challenge came when, at the 2001 Inter-Scandick in Finland, the Tallinn H3 stupidly accepted the offer to host the next one. Thus, in July 2003 some 80 Hashers, including such Hash luminaries as The Wolf and Drain Oil, disembarked in Tallinn for the Interscandick - Inter-Baltdick weekend. Thanks to the tireless administrative efforts of the lovely, calm and efficient Lubrication, the event went off without a hitch. A long run along the Baltic Coast was followed by a circle on the beach and a sumptuous barbeque at the home of Shag-A-Wannabe. One of the weekend highlights was attending the annual Tallinn Summer Beer Fest, where prodigious amounts of brew were consumed. A further big event occurred in 2004 when the Tallinn H3, founded on a Halloween Sunday, celebrated its fifth anniversary and 250th run on, spookily enough, Halloween Sunday! About 40 persons turned out including a not insignificant number from the Swedish Hashers. It was on this occasion the Tallinn Hashers unveiled their club’s motto - ”the small, but low-quality, Hash.” May it always be so! In October 2008 G-String, who slinked off to sunnier climes in the south of France, handed off the GM-ship to Tanel ”Stains the Couch” Raud who has recruited many new regulars from the Estonian community and should be congratulated on doing a first-class, low-quality job!

BEHIND THE SCENES: THE STORY SO FAR by V.D. Viking
That is the story in a nutshell. The barfing and premature ejaculation tales were removed to protect the guilty! The Tallinn H3 most heartily welcomes all 2013 Eurohashers to Estonia and promises to provide ”the small, but low-quality” event of a lifetime!! It has now been a while, quite a long while in fact, since we won the bid for Eurohash. It has at times been hectic, but generally the early planning stages have been rather a smooth ride. We are really happy that the web page got up without any major hiccups and we are extremely happy with the online registrations. No more sorting through hundreds of hand written registration forms, trying to discern what the bloody hell the scribbles are supposed to mean. We had enough of that with the raffle tickets. It is nice to see how the pieces of the puzzle are starting to fit together, hopefully we won’t sit there with pieces missing in August 2013. The ferry company has been really helpful and basically we have been met with positive responses to almost all our questions and requests.
CONTENTS
The planning is also going with great strides in both Helsinki and Tallinn. Man-in-Black is on top of things and has found a good place for
registrations, and for those who arrive early, and not with the ferry from Stockholm, he might offer you a true Finnish sauna experience. In Tallinn we have got a great deal on a hotel, which in turn means a lot more beers for the Hashers on the Friday night pub crawl. With the Old Town’s plethora of bars, the pub crawl will absolutely incredible. Speaking of which, one of this year’s more important trips for Ingrid and me was to go to Tallinn and do a “dry run” of the pub crawl. Oh how I hate all this organizing crap! The organisation is slowly crystallizing and people are starting to find their roles. Short’n’Curlies in Tallinn have been really helpful with the t-shirt designs, Teddy Bear from Helsinki has been working miracles by finding bus transports. We even have a dedicated team, led by Eye Full and Pucko, for decorating the ship’s bar in a proper fashion. We have had a fun though, everywhere we have travelled, adorned in our Viking helmets and shields, we have been met with nothing but positive remarks (except for a few who thought we were mad for not having early bird specials), and the word has spread. We have large numbers of Hashers coming both from the US and from

Haring Lesson by Bimbo by Day and Shoeless Ho
When San Diego experienced a large influx of new hashers this summer, mismanagement began asking themselves...hmm what should we do here so that these new hashers don’t learn bad habits right away? Laying trail is an art so how do you make sure new people don’t send the pack off on a 20 mile death march? SDH3’s Shoeless Ho took matters into his own hands. With sponsorship and funding by SDH3, he designed a 12 Step Program for Hares. This clinic held this summer in San Diego was done in two segments. The first was classroom instruction followed by field experience. Several experienced San Diego hares were on hand to take the eager students out to hit the trail for live practical experience. The first class had 20 students. A second one held a few months later filled up quickly as well. A week later, two of the graduates were haring and more have hared since. The program was a huge success.
So here it is, the 12 Step Program for Basic Haring
CONTENTS
STEP 1: Signing up Signing up to hare is simple. All you have to do is find the Hare Raiser for the hash you want to hare for and tell him or her that you want to sign up. The Hare Raiser will tell you what days are available and sign you up for the date you want. • The person who signs up with the Hare Raiser is the Lead Hare by default. • The Lead Hare is responsible for all the details and for coordinating with the co-hares. • When signing up, exchange e-mails and phone numbers with the Hare Raiser. ◦ Do NOT go off grid after signing up. You will give your Hare Raiser a heart attack. STEP 2: Recruiting Co-Hares Choose your co-hares carefully. Choose people you can count on and trust, but who also work well with you so that it’s a fun experience. Your best friend in the hash isn’t always the best cohare. • Start thinking about what needs to be done and who will do which tasks. Look for co-hares who have skills or resources that fit your needs (schedule, transportation, etc). • For most trails, I recommend having at least two co-hares. This usually allows for enough
78 HARRIER
manpower to lay trail and host beer checks. • At some hashes a certain number of hares get to run free. • Food Hares. If the hash includes food at the end, it may be the responsibility of the hares to supply the food, or there may be a Snackmeister and/or Foodmeister who will handle the food duties. If you are not sure, check with the hare raiser. STEP 3: Budgets The hares are usually budgeted an amount of money to cover the costs of their beer checks, flour and chalk. At some hashes, the hares are budgeted a flat rate regardless of how many people show up. At other hashes, such as SDH3, the budgets are estimated based on expected attendance. • Ask your Hash Cash what your budget is for your trail and how you will be reimbursed. • Be sure to keep ALL receipts. After the hash, turn them into the Hash Cash for reimbursement. They may pay you back on the spot or they will reimburse you by mail. ◦ Some hashes may require you to fill out a form to turn in with your receipts. Ask if this is
CONTENTS
CONTENTS
the case. • For simplicity’s sake, it may be easier to have one person purchase all the supplies so that they are all on one receipt. STEP 4: The ON-IN The first part of the trail to figure out should be the location of the on-in. You could have the greatest trail in the world, but if you don’t have an On-In, it’s not a hash. There are two main styles of hashes in the San Diego area. One type of hash ends at a bar (where we usually have to buy our own beer and food) and the other type usually ends at a location where a keg and food are provided by the hash as part of your run fee. • Bar or Restaurant endings: (Larrikins, Pub Hash, Full Moon, etc) ◦ Find a bar in the general area you are thinking of hashing. Visit it on the same day of the week and at the same time of day that the hash will be there. ◦ Verify that there is enough space to handle the hash. If the place is packed to the gills, then it’s not a good choice for the on-in. ◦ There should be food nearby. If the place itself serves food, that’s even better, but not required. ◦ The overall atmosphere of the bar should be appropriate for the hash. ▪ A busy sports bar on a Monday night during football season, probably isn’t a good fit for a Larrikins ending. ▪ A bar that has Karaoke or a live band at the same time the hash would be there, probably won’t be conducive to circle.
▪ Loud music by itself, in the case of a jukebox or radio, may be okay. Sometimes bartenders are willing to turn it down or off. Check to see if they’re willing to do that for us. ▪ Keep in mind that we sing nasty songs so you may want to gauge the crowd. ◦ There should be enough staff! If hashers have to wait 30 minutes to get a beer, that’s a problem (seriously, this has happened before). Talk to the bartender to find out who the manager is and see if the bar will staff up for the event. Just to be safe, get the manager’s name and number and call two days before to remind him or her. ◦ Negotiate drink specials. This can happen in the same conversation as the staffing talk. Bars are often willing to offer special deals to large groups of serious drinkers. I suggest approaching it something like “My running group is having an event and we’re thinking about coming to this bar. There will be about 50 people (or however many are expected for that hash) who spend a lot of money on drinks. Can you extend happy hour prices for us, or can you offer any specials?” • Outdoor or Private Endings (SDH3, North County, Humpin, etc) ◦ These hashes end at a public place or private residence. Since alcohol will be consumed, it would be best if the on-in is a place where we can legally drink. ▪ A small number of parks still allow public consumption. ▪ Private property is another option. This could be someone’s house, or place of business, as long as we have a right to be there.
CONTENTS
CONTENTS
◦ Another option is to find a place that while technically is not legal, it’s remote enough that we won’t be hassled by the cops. Before you do this it’s a good idea to get in contact with the beermeister and ask him or her if they are willing to tap the keg in that location. ◦ If the hash includes food and/or snacks, find out who is responsible for cooking. There may be a designated person who brings the food or it may be another thing that the hares are responsible for. STEP 5: The Start Find a place to START your hash. The important things to keep in mind are that the start should be somewhere with adequate (legal) parking and with enough room for the hash to gather safely. The relationship between your start location and your On-In determines the type of run. The following are some of the various Start/ On-In combinations: • Most common: ◦ A-A: The start location is at the same place as the on-in. This is the easiest type of trail. ◦ A-A1 (or A-A prime): The ending is nearby, but not exactly at the start. More than a block or two and it doesn’t really qualify. ◦ A-B: The start isn’t near the ending. If you do an A-B run, you must provide for a “B-Van” for people to put their stuff in, which the hares are responsible for taking to the ending. Don’t assume there will be a B-Van for you. This is more work than an A-A run. • Less common (some might even say less desirable): ◦ A-A Drive to B: The trail starts and ends in the same location, but the On-In is not nearby and people will need to drive there from the start. You don’t see these very often because it’s kind of a hassle for the pack and you tend to
lose a few people because once they get in their car, they may decide to just drive home. ◦ A-Z: The ending isn’t even remotely close to the start. I REALLY don’t encourage this type of trail because the hares are responsible not only for a B-van, but for getting everyone back to the start, and may spend the entire night driving back and forth, which isn’t fun. STEP 6: Promoting Your Trail (Demonstration) You’re going to put a lot of time, energy, and creativity into your trail. Don’t waste it on a small pack. Promote your trail and get people excited about it. . • REQUIRED: Post a runstart on SDH3.com. This is easy; all it requires is that you fill in the blanks. Runstarts should be posted at least a week in advance to allow people to plan for it and so as to not cause your Hare Raiser to have a heart attack. ◦ It’s okay to post the initial runstart before you know all of the other details. Describe as much as you know but if you think you’re going to add to it later, be sure to make a note telling people to check back in a couple of days (not the day of) for more details. ◦ Be sure to mention any details that could encourage attendance. Is there a theme involved, is there something particularly amazing about the trail, special drink checks, or is it a holiday, birthday, etc? If so, let people know because it will encourage attendance. ◦ Warnings/Important information: Be sure to let people know things like, is the trail dog friendly, do people need to bring flashlights, should they bring a change of shoes? • OPTIONAL: Promote your trail on Facebook by creating a Facebook event invitation. IMHO, these can really help attendance. I’ve found that when people see
CONTENTS
CONTENTS
that their friends are going, they tend to “pile on” too. This is strictly my personal opinion, and some people don’t like to do it, but I think it helps to produce a good turnout. It doesn’t replace the start posting though because not everyone is on Facebook. • OPTIONAL: Go to other hashes and promote your trail during announcements STEP 7: Google Maps is Your Friend (Demonstration) Use Google Maps in the “satellite view” setting to see the big picture of the area prior to scouting on foot. This will not only save you some time, but it can help you find interesting features or obstacles to incorporate into your trail. Google Maps can also give you an accurate indication of the length of your trail, thus preventing you from accidentally laying a 10 plus mile trail, which can anger the pack, mess with down-downs, and cause the hares to have to go look for lost hashers. Remember, the pack can hold a grudge. • From the Start, use the line tool to map out your potential trail. • Include the locations of checks, beer
checks, backchecks, cars, etc. • If you’re splitting up trail, indicate who is doing which sections. Keeping in mind that one of the hares at either end of the section, needs to be responsible for connecting the parts together. • Turkey/Eagle splits. Many, or maybe most, hashes feel that if you lay a trail that is much more than four miles long, you should have to offer a Turkey/Eagle split. Eagle trails are usually longer, but it could also be a matter of difficulty (climbing fences for example). STEP 8: Boots on the Ground Once you have scouted your potential trail online, it’s time to get out there and scout in person. Google maps, by itself, is NOT enough. Trails that appear to be super easy, may now be overgrown and impassable. Also, it doesn’t take into account elevation changes. • Walk the trail with the co-hares who will be responsible for laying trail. Sometimes they will see something you miss. “Ooh, look over there, wouldn’t it be fun to run them up/through/around that?” Walking instead of running the first time gives you more time
CONTENTS
CONTENTS
to really note any obstacles that you may not notice at a running pace. ◦ Identify any challenges that you couldn’t see online. Take note of any fences, barbed wire, angry dogs, nosy neighbors, private property, flooded river beds, or other obstacles. ◦ Scout the trail at approximately the same time of day as the hash will be going through. Automatic sprinklers may come on right behind you and wipe out your trail. • After your initial scouting excursion, go back to your map and make any necessary adjustments. • Run the adjusted trail to time it. For MOST hashes, aim to have the pack in within 60-90 minutes from the time the pack is away. STEP 9: Beer checks Some people think that beer checks are optional. Do you know what Shoeless calls a hash without a Beer check? A RUN. If you’re not going to have a beer check, then mention that in your runstart so I don’t waste my time driving out to bumblef*ck. Ignore this at your own risk. Nobody can make you have a beer check, but people will remember and there is no upside to being known as the hare who doesn’t provide beer checks. • Don’t stash the beer right in the middle of poison oak, traffic, or other dangerous place. • Don’t put the beer someplace where it can easily be seen by mortals, who will simply take it. • Have some water at the beer check too, especially on hot days.
• If one of the hares is hosting the beer check make sure it’s someplace safe. STEP 10: Your “Go Plan” AKA Getting All Your Ducks in a Row Plan out your schedule for the day of the event. Make sure you know who is bringing the beer, ice, coolers, rope, flour, chalk, etc. Working backwards from the start time, plan on how early your co- hares need to meet before the trail. • Create a time line. Include details such as: ◦ Do any vehicles or beer checks need to be pre- placed? ◦ Do any sections need to be pre-layed? (more on that later) ◦ Who is bringing the beer, flour, ice, etc? • EXAMPLE: I’m haring with Oh Shit What’s That, Rabbit Hole, and Fingerbang an Orangutan. We’re haring for SDH3 on a Friday night and it’s a simple four mile trail with no splits. ◦ Hares are supposed to be away at 6:30. The beer check is in the middle of some obnoxiously long tunnel, so we decide to stash it in advance. I’m picking up the flour, beer, and ice, and Fingerbang is bringing a cooler. So we decide to meet an hour earlier at the start. This gives us time to stash the beer check, and still make it in time. ◦ So my personal go plan is to leave my house at 4:30, so I can buy the supplies, get to the start by 5:30, stash the beer at the beer check, and make it to the run start on time. ◦ When the hares are away, Oh Shit and I peel off and lay the second half of trail backwards to
CONTENTS
CONTENTS
the drink check, while Rabbit and Fingerbang lay the first half of the trail. This allows us all to enjoy the drink check with the pack. After the pack is away, we haul the cooler back to Fingerbang’s car and drive to the On-In. STEP 11 Hare Lies: At the start, before the hares are away, it’s time for Hare Lies. Traditionally, this is a mix of true and false information. It’s a good time to give any last minute details that weren’t posted on the run start or to f*ck with everyone’s heads. Generally this is expected and taken in stride, but there are some things that are more acceptable lies than others.
• Don’t lie about matters of safety. If there are rabid dogs, rusty barbed wire fences, Poison Oak, angry gun toting property owners, etc, people deserve to know. • Don’t lie about whether it is stroller or dog friendly. • Don’t lie about beer checks (more of a personal pet peeve) • If the trail is eight miles long, don’t tell people that it is only four miles. The hares are responsible for finding any hashers who don’t make it in from trail. Step 12 – On On !!
