How to get there:
First, if you are not in Asia, you must get to Asia. Most people will arrive via Bangkok or K.L. . Once there, make your way to Jogja. This can be done in several ways, such as flying Bangkok to Jakarta to Jogja, Or K.L. to Jogja. Some may opt to take a bus /train from Bangkok to KL, and then fly, but this is a rather long hawl. Then there is the Son of the Great Train Rumble, a party train heading out from Jakarta and ending in Jogja. See details on page 74.

Gubernur Jawa Tengah (Central Java Governor) On On! Praise to God who has given us his blessing and mercy, so in a good and healthy condition we can attend the ‘Borobudur Interhash 2012’. On behalf of the Government and the citizens of Central Java, Indonesia, it is my great pleasure and honor to welcome you, all the participants to Central Java, the memorable and beautiful province. Let me also take this opportunity to thank, with your attention and trust, to Magelang Regency for being the hosting province for the event of ‘Borobudur Interhash 2012’ The region of Central Java mostly consists of agricultural cities which have a variety of interesting and impressive tourist attractions at popular tourism sites. Borobudur Temple is one of the primary cultural and religious tourism icons. Much of the history of Buddhism was captured within the relief panels and stupas of this great temple. At this site, we can enjoy natural tourism, agro-tourism, maritime tourism, culinary tourism, and also a traditional art performance in the event ‘Borobudur Interhash 2012’. We, all the people of Central Java, are hoping you will join us in our spectacular and prestigious event ‘Visit Central Java Year 2013’ together with your families and colleagues. Come and enjoy the variety of tourism attractions, from beautiful landscapes to art performances at our four gracious and beautiful tourism destinations in Central Java, such as Borobudur – Yogyakarta, Semarang – Karimunjawa, Solo – Sangiran, and Pangandaran – Nusakambangan. Those are the points I would like to convey on this occasion. Finally, we wish you all a very pleasant visit to ‘Borobudur Interhash 2012’ and wish you a safe and comfortable journey within the beautiful Magelang Regency. DEAR HAPPY HASHERS, SYMPATHETIC SUPPORTERS & CANTANKEROUS CRITICS:
I
n mid-DEC2010, Chairman LIEM and I met in Magelang for two days. LIEM shared the dream, which had driven him beyond the previous three rejections of Bali for hosting Interhash. He boasted the beautiful people and the nation of Indonesia with event activities and features to rival/exceed those of previous Interhashes. I shared my evolving dream of “building” an Interhash, better than my personal favorite (IH2000 @ Tasmania). The dreams dovetailed; I have been here ever since that DEC2010 meeting excepting a rather intense spinal neuro-surgery sojourn in USA. YOU WILL HAVE A GREAT TIME !!! THE IH2012 MEMORIES At the great risk of writing before the event, WHAT we hope will survive is memories. Our program planning assumptions, since inception, began with: 1. QUALITY IS NUMBER ONE. Quality is measured by the intensity, impact and longevity of the memories provided. The memories we intend to send you home and to your local chapters with include: • digital-video-mapped Borobudur Temple, choreographed with light shows, music and two scripts for Sat & Sunday nights • fast-track Electronic Ticket check-in, even though only 30% chose the privilege • eighteen “goody” souvenirs including 3 garments which are state-of-the-art designs WITHOUT advertising clutter • IH2014 host election processes guaranteeing integrity beyond previous Interhashes • smoking volcanoes, Heritage temples at Hindu Prambanan & Buddhist Borobudur • Trailmaster’s facts and data for all 33 trails to ease hashers’ run selection • garment sizing/labeling convention to clear Asian-Western confusion with fall-back to Return/ Exchange Kiosk • the CROWN JEWEL Ball Breaker Super Long Run HOW WE TOOK IT ON 1. program planning -- over 700 activities, features, services & supports to design, build/buy, test, & staff 2. media & information – 15 monthly status reports, more than 31 E-mail Shots on various topics, overflowing & constantly updated website 3. registration rework & clean-up -- repetitive
campaigns yielding 2,073 update transactions (as of 01MAR12) 4. souvenirs – for each of 18 gifts, 39 life cycle steps from concept to delivery to hasher 5. runs –511 hare staff, 264 medics; 33 trails, 16 life cycle steps/trail 6. venues – the shifting sands of HQ as well as placements on temple grounds 7. 2014 election – registered hasher casts one vote written by that hasher, only once 8. entertainment – brand-new 2 coup de grace digital-video-mapping productions HOW DONE? You really do NOT want to know. There were physical, emotional, health, family separation, monthly visa runs plus the full cash paid for the run fee. My labor contribution since mid-DEC2010 through wrap-up approximates five and one-half thousand (>5,500) hours in 1½+ years. IN CONCLUSION If you are disappointed, PLEASE TEACH US !! If you are pleased, PLEASE TELL ANY & ALL YOU KNOW! But most of all, REMEMBER THE MEMORIES…….BOROBUDUR INTERHASH 2012 !!! ON ON L.P. JETER Rain City HHH @ Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. Apart from the live band we are putting a DJ in the band breaks, who will also play 60’s & 70’s floor fillers, 70’s rock and disco classics we all know, but just a little cultural stuff during dinner to appease the culture vultures. On Saturday and Sunday we are doing something called Video Mapping. Basically you take a full size photo of the temple, lay it out on a computer and animate over the template of the temple. Then using seven bloody huge projectors, project the animation onto the temple, when it’s dark obviously. The results are awesome, you can make the temple move with bricks coming in and out, Buddhas coming out of the brick work, turn the temple into a volcano, complete with lava, it’s up to your imagination. Look at ‘Video Mapping’ on You Tube to see what I mean. We are inviting Guinness World Records, as this will be the biggest video mapping of a landmark in Asia. Since our theme is Interhash, we will be featuring an Interhash Parade showcasing the 18 World Interhashes. For newbies to Indonesia there is an Indonesian parade, complete with costumes from the provinces. There’s also the Down Down Competition, hash acts and a few surprises!
Interhash HQ Our Interhash HQ is at Hotel Rich, Jalan Magelang, Jogjakarta Located around 15 minutes drive from Jl. Malioboro, the Hotel Rich is a new hotel that has everything one would imagine to cater for an Interhash event. The hotel features two bars and two restaurants serving both local and international cuisine. Interhash registration will be held at the hotel’s large ballroom. When hashers have completed their registration and picked up their goody bags, the hotel’s beer garden will be open serving icy cold beers. If you want to pick up some official Interhash merchandise, the Interhash Bazaar will be located in the large basement area adjacent to the bus departure point for the runs. You will also find the 2014 bidder’s booths here too including Red Dress Run and Full Moon Run registration, Down Down Competition rego and Interhash Rugby info. The bus departure point is a very large secure area within the hotel grounds offering small stalls where snacks and beverages will be also on sale for departing hashers. The Hotel Rich features a beer garden on the second floor of the hotel, ‘The Beer Garden’ will comfortably hold around 200 to 300 Hashers and offers a restaurant service and swimming pool. For hashers who don’t want ‘The Beer Garden’ the hotel also features a lobby bar. Conveniently located next door is a football field, perfect for our Interhash Rugby event on Friday afternoon. Why Fast-Trackers When I’m Queuing? SIMPLE, FAST, DIRECT ANSWER: Pre-registered hashers with complete identity authentication information, fully paid, with waiver signatures, submitted full operational data and a current e-mail address, all complete before the 14FEB2012 Saint Valentine’s cutoff received their Electronic Tickets by e-mail. The Electronic Ticket commitment is registration processing within 15 minutes of screener’s check of passport/KTP/ID. Borobudur Interhash 2012 registration staff will process an Electronic Ticket hasher with passport/KTP/ID by triple verifying: the Electronic Ticket to the computer registration record to the hasher’s face in order to authenticate the hasher’s identity. The registration clerk affixes the event ID bracelet, gives the rest; then the hasher is off to a swift scoot through to goody claim. This happens fast because IH2012 and the hasher are fully synchronized with NO issues. GOOD FOR WHOM? Fast-Track accelerates hashers, who have fully followed the registration process as well as those who have followed our developments since the Summer, 2010 win in Kuching. Then followed campaigns focused on cleaning up the past incomplete registrations thereby resulting in more FastTrackers. Fast-Track is solace for the IH2012 legal staff, with signed liability waiver signatures. Fast-Track is essential for the IH2012 operating managers, with statistical data far enough ahead for planning beverages, catering, runs, security, souvenirs, transport and voting. WHEN & HOW DID THIS PROCESS ARISE? In JAN2011, the registration records were in complete disarray with individual registrations ranging from only hash name with cash deposit. This condition plus experiences with other major HHH events led to a search for a better, faster process for registrations. Could hashers be identified and processed more quickly if they fully accepted responsibility to advise the event organizer what’s necessary? So there begun the cultural shift from the organizer responsible to extract information necessary for the event to a culture of the end-user participating with the organizer for information necessary to increase the event’s success.
HOW DID THE FAST-TRACKERS KNOW? Most Fast-Trackers did not know they would receive Electronic Tickets because their registrations followed the full application form including e-mail address plus waiver signature, and, of course, full payment. As a result of so many campaigns here and abroad, we have processed updates (1,143 as of 01MAR2012) which have elevated many to Fast-Track status. Our campaigns included: promotions in our monthly status reports, e-mail shot distributions, travels with presentations at HHH events, appeals for participation by Indonesian and Malaysian Hash Councils, mailers to Grand Master lists, advertisements in international magazine. We used every miracle of modern science & society to sway hashers to “queue-less” checkin. How any missed the message that IH2012 was seeking Fast-Track participants amazes us! Borobudur Temple World Heritage Site
Borobudur is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist monument situated in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. Candi is Indonesian for Temple thus the monument is locally called Candi Borobudur. Following the 14th century decline of the Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms in Java, Borobudur was abandoned and lay hidden for centuries under layers of volcanic ash and jungle growth. Worldwide knowledge of its existence was sparked in 1814 by then Java Governor, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who was advised of its location by native Indonesians. Raffles’ men cut down trees, burned down vegetation and dug away the earth to reveal the monument. Borobudur was built on a bedrock hill, 265 m (869 ft) above sea level. Little is known about Gunadharma, the architect of the complex. His name is recounted from Javanese folk tales rather than from written inscriptions. The construction has been estimated to have taken 75 years. Approximately 55,000 cubic metres of andesite stones were taken from neighboring stone quarries

to build the monument. The stone was cut to size, transported to the site and laid without mortar. Knobs, indentations and dovetails were used to form joints between stones. The monument comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms, decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. A main dome, located at the center of the top platform, is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupa. Each stupa is bell-shaped and pierced by numerous decorative openings. Statues of the Buddha sit inside the pierced enclosures. The monument has a unique drainage system. 100 spouts are installed at each corner, each carved in the shape of a gargoyle. The bas-reliefs in Borobudur depict many scenes of daily life in 8th century ancient Java, also illustrated are the pains of hell and the pleasure of heaven and the endless cycle of birth and death. The narrative panels finally end with Sudhana’s achievement of the Supreme Knowledge and the Ultimate Truth. Of the original 504 Buddha statues, over 300 are damaged (mostly headless) and 43 are missing (since the monument’s discovery, heads have been stolen as collector’s items, mostly by Western museums).

Buddhist Pilgrims meditate on the top
A large restoration project was undertaken between 1975 and 1982 by the Indonesian government and UNESCO costing over US$6 million dollars, following which the monument was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. It is listed under Cultural criteria “represents a masterpiece of human creative genius” and a “work of outstanding universal significance”. Volcanic ash from Merapi fell on the temple complex on November 2010, which is approximately 28 kilometers (17 miles) southwest of the crater. A layer of ash up to 2.5 centimeters (1”) fell on the temple statues during the eruption which all had to be cleaned. Today, the monument is both a shrine to the Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage. Pilgrims are guided from the base of the temple by the system of staircases and corridors and must circumambulate the monument while ascending to the top platform. Each of the three platforms represent one stage of enlightenment. This path symbolizes Buddhist cosmology. Once a year Buddhists in Indonesia celebrate Vesak day at the monument.
The monument is the single most visited tourist attraction in Indonesia. The monument attracts 2.5 million visitors annually 25% being international tourists. Prambanan Temple
Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia and is one of the biggest in Southeast Asia. Located approximately 18km East of Jogjakarta city, Prambanan sits exactly on the boundary between Jogjakarta and Central Java province. It is characterized by its tall and pointed architecture, with its towering 47m high central temple inside a large complex of individual temples. Prambanan is dedicated to the Trimurti, the expression of God as the Creator (Brahma), the Sustainer (Vishnu) and the Destroyer (Shiva). Historians suggest that the construction of Prambanan probably was meant to mark the return of the Hindu Dynasty to power in Central Java after almost a century of Buddhist domination. According to the Shivagrha inscription of 856 CE, the temple was built to honor Lord Shiva. The present name Prambanan, was derived from the name of Prambanan village where the temple stood, Prambanan served as the royal temple of the Kingdom of Mataram, with most of the state’s religious ceremonies and sacrifices being conducted there. An eruption of Mount Merapi volcano, located north of Prambanan, or a power struggle probably caused the beginning of the decline of the temple. It was soon abandoned and began to deteriorate. The temples
themselves collapsed during a major earthquake in the 16th century. Although the temple ceased to be an important center of worship, the ruins scattered around the area were still recognizable and known to the local Javanese people in later times. The temple officially caught international attention in the early 19th century. In 1811 during Britain’s short-lived rule of the Dutch East Indies, Colin Mackenzie, a surveyor in the service of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, came upon the temples by chance. Although Sir Thomas subsequently commissioned a full survey of the ruins, they remained neglected for decades, with Dutch residents carting off sculptures as garden ornaments and native villagers using the foundation stones for construction material. Half-hearted excavations by archaeologists in the 1880s merely facilitated looting. Reconstruction of the compound began in 1918, and proper restoration only in 1930. During the restoration, a well was discovered under the center of the Shiva temple. Sheets of gold leaves with the inscription Varuna (God of the Sea) and Parvata (God of the Mountains) were found together with coins, jewels, pieces of gold and silver leaves and seashells. After the reconstruction of the main temples in 1990s, Prambanan once again reclaimed its status

as an important religious center for Hindu rituals and ceremonies in Java. The temple is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1992 the Indonesian government created a State-owned park management company responsible for the upkeep of Borobudur, Ratu Boko and Prambanan Temples. The open-air amphitheatre and stages on the west side of the temple across the Opak river, were built to stage the Ramayana ballet. This traditional Javanese dance is the centuries old dance of the Javanese court, and has been performed every full moon night in the Prambanan temple since the 1960s. The Ramayana Ballet now perform nightly for tourists. Prambanan has become a major archaeological and cultural tourism attraction in Indonesia attracting over 850,000 Indonesian visitors and over 115,000 foreign visitors a year. JOGJAKARTA
Jogjakarta (also known as Jogja, Yogya, or Yogyakarta) is one of the foremost cultural centers of Java. The city is named after the province and covers an area of about 32.5 kilometer square. Jogjakarta ranks as one of the best-preserved and most beautiful cities in Java, and is renowned as a center of classical Javanese fine art and culture such as batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry and puppet shows, with this in mind it’s not surprising that Jogjakarta is home to many universities with the largest population of university students in Indonesia. Jogjakarta is known for its vivid contemporary art scene. There are various theatres, batik galleries and other places located all around the city where you can witness Javanese dance and ballet, music, drama and poetry. Visit the ‘Wayang Kulit’ Leather Puppet Theater used for shadow plays. Local craftsmen excel in the art of making a unique style of batik dyed fabric and silver work. Other handicrafts include coconut shell and horn ornaments, pottery, antique jewelry and paintings. You can also buy many high quality handmade souvenirs for a good price (and yes, you can haggle). Jogjakarta was in the 16th and 17th centuries the seat of the mighty Javanese empire of Mataram, from which present day Jogjakarta has inherited the best of traditions. The city itself has a special charm which seldom fails to captivate the visitor. As you would expect from a World Heritage City, there are ancient temples and old palaces that will take you back to the days of the Sultans. The Sultan’s Palace is the hub of Jogja’s traditional life and despite the advance of modernity; it still emanates the spirit of

refinement which has been the hallmark of Jogja’s art for centuries. The palace court with its grand and elegant Javanese architecture lies in the center of the city. Also there are museums and exotic markets where you can get some flavor of the culture, traditions and customs of the city. Jogjakarta is located on the “ring of fire” and Mount Merapi is a very active volcano that often emits gray smokes and hot molten lava. The mountain is one of the major tourist attractions in Jogjakarta and despite it being a dangerous and active volcano (yes, we will run around it!), it is the favorite of those who love mountain climbing. Transport options in Jogjakarta are an exotic blend of the old and the modern. Medium and small size buses are fairly popular. You can also use a taxi to get around. Or you could ride a traditional horse and cart called an “Andong” or “Dokar”. Jogjakarta is one of the few cities in the world where you can still ride a traditional three-wheeled, pedal-powered cart called a “Becak”. By air, Jogjakarta can be easily reached via Jakarta, Bali and Surabaya by different Domestic airlines. The main airport is Adisucipto International Airport from which regular flights to Jakarta and Denpasar, Bali are available. There are also regular flights to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur with Singapore Airlines, Malaysian Airlines or Asia’s best budget airline Air Asia. The airport is located about 6 km from the city. The main railway station is Tugu Station from which trains depart regularly to Jakarta. Giwangan is the main bus station from which Bus services throughout Java and beyond are available.

Magelang is one of six cities in Central Java. It is located in the middle of Magelang regency, between Mount Merbabu and Mount Sumbing in Central Java, Indonesia. Magelang is located 43 km (±1 hour drive) north from Yogyakarta, 15 km (±10 minutes) north from Mungkid and 75 km (±1 hour 45 minutes) south of the capital of Central Java, Semarang. Magelang was established on 11 April 907. Magelang was then known as a village called Mantyasih, which is now known as Meteseh. There are three stele of historical importance in Magelang, namely Poh, Gilikan and Mantyasih, all of which are written on a plate of copper. Poh and Mantyasih were written under the rule of King Balitung of Mataram Kingdom. In those steles, the villages of Mantyasih and Glanggang were mentioned. They became Meteseh and Magelang respectively. The
village of Mantyasih was made by the king as tax-free village which was led by a patih (similar to Prime Minister nowadays). When Britain colonised Magelang in the eighteenth century, Magelang became the seat of the government and was made to the same level as a regency with Mas Ngabehi Danukromo as its first leader (Bupati). Magelang became the capital of Karesidenan Kedu in 1818. After the Dutch defeated the British, Magelang was made the centre of economy because of its strategic location. The Dutch government built drinking water tower (known locally as Menara Air Minum) in 1918 which provides the city with water. Electricity became available in 1927. The roads were remade using asphalt. The city has historically been a military post, dating back to the Dutch East Indies colonial era. It subsequently acted as an army stronghold for Indonesian proindependence movements against the Dutch government during the resistance period. Currently, it is host to two military landmarks: The National Military Academy, and the only military-associated school, Taruna Nusantara.

After the independence of Indonesia, Magelang became kotapraja (same level as a district) and then kotamadya (same level as town). The composition of demography based on its religion and belief, Magelang people has varied and different belief and religion. Majority of Magelang citizen are Muslim, but there are minority group such as Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, and also there are also spiritualism and traditional Javanese belief. Therefore, Magelang citizen are plural, although majority of them Muslim. They usually stick together and keep mutual relationship among them. Perhaps, it is a Javanese wisdom which every people to get close and involves to maintaining society. As of February 2010, Magelang has a total population of 118.227.

Jogjakarta is a relatively small city, so travelling around town should not be too expensive. The Tourism Authority has maps in English that can be obtained from its offices next to Hotel Mutiara on Jalan Malioboro, at the airport and the train station. By taxi Jogjakarta’s taxis are metered and nowadays most taxi drivers are trustworthy. Flagfall is Rp 5,500 and most trips around the centre of town should not cost more than Rp 15,000. After dark the minimum fare for a taxi is Rp 10,000 even if the meter reads less that Rp 10,000. If by chance you find a taxi driver that you feel comfortable with and trustworthy, ask for his cellular phone number so that next time you need to travel you can call directly to his cell phone and arrange your travel needs. Most taxi drivers will be more than happy to do this. You can also get a taxi by calling the taxi company’s office. The list of Taxi Company’s telephone numbers are in your survival guide. But, sometimes there are one or more taxi units on standby outside some of the larger hotels. By trishaw The traditional three-wheeled and pedal-powered cart is known as the becak (pronounced beh-chak), which can be found in most parts of Jogjakarta. Haggle furiously before getting into the becak. A ride from within the city to the Malioboro shopping precinct should not cost more than Rp 20,000. By horse cart Traditional horse-pulled carts, known as andong, or dokar, wait for tourists outside hotspots like the train station, the Kraton and Mall Malioboro. Haggle furiously. The cost for one round trip for andong is Rp 20,000. Usually they ask for Rp 30,000 but they may settle for less. Andong can accommodate up to 5 adult passengers. By bus Medium and small size buses are the main public transport in Jogjakarta. There are two kinds of bus: regular and Patas. Patas buses, known as TransJogja operate from 6am to 10pm and stop only at designated shelters. Unlike regular buses, TransJogja is air-conditioned and generally safer. Tickets can be purchased directly at the shelters and cost for single trip is Rp 3,000. Passengers may purchase regular trip cards which cuts per tip cost to Rp 2,700, and allows transit to other shelter. There are six routes, and route maps can be downloaded. Be aware of pickpockets in buses.
30 IH2012
Regular buses normally operate from 6am to 5pm, and some long routes extend their operation until 9pm. The cost for single trip is Rp 2,500 regardless of distance (within the city). Usually on a bus there will be one driver and one helper who will hang from the side of the bus and handle money and try to get passengers to ride the bus. The helper will usually tap you on the shoulder to indicate you should pay him. If there is no helper you can pay the driver directly. When you are ready to get off a bus, tell the driver or helper “Kiri”, which means left.

By car or motorbike There are several car and motorbike rental agencies just outside Tugu Station. A near new semi-automatic (clutchless) motorbike can be rented for Rp 50,000 per 24 hr; older bikes may come for less, and fully automatic bikes such as a Honda Vario or Yamaha Mio may sometimes cost Rp 5,000-10,000 more. Cars can be had rented for around Rp 250,000 for 24 hr, or Rp 175,000 for 12 hrs. A driver can be hired along with the car for another Rp 50,000-Rp 200,000/day. Prices may vary due to fuel inclusion for a set distance or itinerary. Prices are always subject to negotiation and may increase or decrease due to local demand, type and age of vehicle and your individual requirements at the time. If renting please ensure you are familiar with both the applicable licensing requirements and vehicle use in the prevailing conditions. An International driving license will suffice.
The main transportation operating in Magelang are cars, motorcycles, buses, pedicabs, becak, bicycles and the latest one is AFDA Taxi. Local residents call the blue colored van-shaped Mass Public Transport as Angkot (abbreviation from ‘Angkutan Kota’, City Transport), and its fare is quiet cheap, just Rp 2000 (US$ 0.22), for a short or long trip. Magelang does not have its own airport and therefore relies on Jogjakarta’s Adisutjipto International Airport, Surakarta’s Adisumarmo International Airport and Semarang’s Achmad Yani International Airport. Then, to reach the airport, especially Adisucipto, from Magelang needs about one hour by bus or car or taxi. But today its easier way to reach Adi Sucipto International Airport in Jogjakarta by using DAMRI special shuttle bus that special operated to carry people from Magelang to Adi Sucipto Airport. The shuttle bus shelter at Jogja’s airport is conveniently located at the parking across the railway, where all passengers arriving at Jogja have to proceed through the tunnel, in order to catch a train, bus, taxi or private car. Arrival at Magelang is near Hotel Wisata, south of city centre. This is convenient if you want to stay at this ‘melati class’ hotel (rates Rp 50,000 to Rp 200,000), but for the top hotel Puri Asri you will need transport for another 2 km. The regular bus station is also 2 km to the north-east. The DAMRI Bus fare is Rp 35,000 and the departure times are: • Jogja airport to Magelang: 7- 8-9-10-11 a.m., noon, 2-4-6-7-8 pm. • Magelang to Jogja airport: 4-5-6-7-8-10 a.m., noon, 1-2-3-4 pm. The trip takes about one hour. Phone: +62-274-746-1450 One of the newest transportation services is AFDA Taksi, provided by Armada Town Square. With that taxi, you can get around Magelang. The tariff is affordable, just Rp 2.500 per km (Rp 4000 per mile) to wherever except to the sea. You can get them at Artos Magelang, or just call them at +62-293-551-33-37. The service is 24 hours and they can pick you up.

SEE THE LANDMARKS Being one of the oldest cities in Indonesia, Jogjakarta has many heritage buildings and monuments. The number one must-see attraction is Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono’s palace, better known as Kraton NgaJogjakarta. Other heritage buildings from colonial era are: BNI ‘46 building, Kantor Pos Besar (Central Post Office) building, and Bank Indonesia building, all of them are located near Sultan’s palace.
Notable landmarks and attractions
Tugu Monument A well known landmark located in the center of downtown Jogjakarta. Built by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VI, the top spire was originally a round sphere which represents the universe. During the colonial era, the spire was replaced with a golden cylinder. Located in the middle of Tugu Intersection, it just 1 km north of Malioboro Street.
Vredeburg Fortress A Dutch fort located in front of Gedung Agung (President’s Palace). This is a great example of the Dutch colonial architecture. A few warfare items are still preserved, including twin cannon.
Imogiri Located at southwest of town. It’s the graveyard of the Jogjakarta and Surakarta royal families. It had suffered damage during 2006 earthquake but has reopened.
Kotagede Capital of ancient Islamic Mataram kingdom. The tomb of Mataram Kingdom’s first king, Panembahan Senopati, is also located in this place. Before independence, Kotagede was the central economic district of Jogjakarta, as it held the largest marketplace and was home to many wealthy batik merchants. Kotagede remains a prime example of ancient Javanese architecture and city structure. Be sure to check out the local silver handicrafts.

KRATON COMPLEX The Sri Sultan’s palace or Kraton encompasses the main palace, Sultan’s residential, two Sultan’s grounds, and large residential area where sultan servants used to reside.
Notable attractions in Kraton complex
Kraton Jogjakarta A calm yet elegant Javanese heritage that consists of two separate entrances: the Main Court (Pagilaran & Siti Hinggil), and the Residence. The Main Court showcases the grandeur of Sultan’s monarchy, while the Residence is homier while still exhibiting the royal family’s luxurious lifestyle. Open 8.30AM to 1PM daily, on Friday the attraction is closed at 11AM. While the guide is part of the entrance fee, they might expect tips. Some guide might offer extended trip to sultan’s servant’s batik workshop, this is a scam as they only bring you to a regular batik shop with steep price. It’s a good idea to refuse their offer politely. It cost Rp 12,500 (foreign tourist price) or Rp 5,000 (Indonesian tourist price), & Rp 1,000 extra for a photo. There is music and dance shows within the palace regularly, free with the ticket, try to check out the times when you arrive in Jogjakarta. The Sultan maintains three gamelans in the palace, and the pavilion nearest the entrance houses one of them. If they’re playing, do sit down and be patient, this music takes its time. Also worth seeing is the prince’s palace to the Southeast of the main palace.
Taman Sari Location: Jl. Taman, Kraton. Also known by the Dutch name waterkasteel (water castle), this is a partly ruined complex built as a pleasure garden by the first Sultan in 1765. One of the bathing pools was dedicated to the sultan’s harem, and he had a tower overlooking the area so he could take his pick. Towards the back of the complex is the original entrance to the pools, which used to be a small dock connected to a longsince-vanished river; a bit of snooping beyond this entrance will get you to a back street, where one can freely visit a fascinating network of tunnels and rooms, including an Escher-like series of interlacing staircases over what looks like a disused well. Entrance fee does not cover the guide, who will expect tips. Open 9AM-3PM daily. Rp 7,000 for entrance, Rp 1,000 for a photo permit.
Alun-Alun or the Sultan’s ground There are two Sultan’s grounds: Alun-alun Utara and Alun-alun Selatan or the northern and southern Sultan’s ground, consecutively. If you are lucky, you can see the Gerebeg Maulud parade during Prophet Muhammad’s birthday. Jogjakarta city was built with deep philosophy: the city was designed so that the main element of the city forms a imaginary line. This straight line starts from Parangtritis on the coast, to Kraton Jogjakarta, to Tugu Monument, and finally to Mount Merapi. This represents Sultan’s strong relationship with the guardian spirits of Mt. Merapi and the beach of Parangtritis.

Show me the Money As soon as you arrive in Indonesia you are a Millionaire, such is the Indonesian Monetary system. The Indonesian currency is the Rupiah. The currency has denominations of 1000, 5000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 for the banknote version. At time of writing the Indonesian Rupiah is Rp.9000 to the US Dollar. So calculations for IDR at present: 10.000 = US$ 1.1 50.000 = US$ 5.6 100.000 = US$ 11.2 1.000.000 = US$ 112.3 It’s worth noting here that there are currently two colours of the Rp.10.000 note in circulation at the moment. Both of them very similar in color to the Rp.100.000 note, so double check your zeros on the notes when making transactions. Money Changers If you find that you have to change money with a street side money changer, the golden rule is to make sure that you are the last one to count the money out in front of them, not them. A popular con is them dropping money under the table after they have counted it out in front of you. You can spot this con immediately by being offered lower denominations of notes, which gives them a better chance to drop money easier without you noticing the loss. The banks are the safest places to change money. There are plenty of ATM’s around and also Western Unions if the need be. Haggling With Shopping, the general rule, if there is such a thing, is to offer half of what they are asking and finish off somewhere in the middle so that both parties feel they got a good deal.
If Taxis are off meter agree on the price first before you get in. No tip required when off meter. Same can be said of a carriage or becak ride, agree on a price first, but if a 60 year old man has been cycling you all around town for an agreed Rp.20,000 you can be generous and give him Rp.30,000 and watch his eyes light up. The locals will never hassle you for tips, just use your discretion. Tipping Restaurants Rp.3000 to Rp.5000 depending on the type of service you get. Taxis Rp.1000 to Rp.5000 Guides Rp.50.000 Shopping Malioboro is a well-known shopping street and very popular among Indonesians as well as international tourists. It spans from the Tugu Station to the Sultan’s square, Malioboro is 2 km in length and home to hundreds of shops and streetstalls offering various kinds of handicrafts. Many curious goods are available in many places in this city. If you love timeless pieces, Jogjakarta is the home of batik, traditional wayang puppets, sculpture, ceramics and silverware. Countless handicrafts from outside Jogjakarta can also be found here. Don’t be surprised if you bump into souvenirs from Bali or Asmat, often with better deal than if bought in those islands. On the street stalls you can haggle, all shops are fixed prices. Looking for t-shirts or caps? Check out the ‘Dagadu’ outlet in Malioboro Mall. Then you can print and produce anything for you. Good quality and really cheap! The KFC’s, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Pizza Huts and such can always be found in the large shopping Malls. Jogja also has a Carrefour Hypermarket.
When in Magelang or Jogja, you simply must try the delicious street food. Every night after the shops close, vendors construct their tent-style restaurants. It is great to sit on mats and get to know the locals whilst munching away on some delicious Javanese food. The food is cheap and there are the occasional wandering minstrels who will entertain you till the wee hours of the morning. Also, all along Jalan Malioboro, mats are laid out on the pavement where the patrons can sit and enjoy the food cooked fresh. Javanese dishes are renowned for their sweetness.

The Hash Bars Since bars are a significant cultural feature of every Interhash, IH2012 has identified four for your consideration, two of which are located right in the heart of the city of Jogjakarta and situated on and near the main street of Jalan Malioboro (Malioboro Street). The third is at the InterHash HQ at the Rich Hotel. There is one other bar for Hashers who are in Magelang and it is the hotel restaurant bar in the Hotel Puri Asri in Magelang, close to the red dress run party.
Bond Café
We gave them all implicit instructions on what Hashers like and are expecting.: affordable, competitive prices, plenty of icy cold beer, a selection of local and international food. clean, & good service. In Jogjakarta we have the Legian Garden cafe, on Malioboro Street, which is steeped in Hash history as the former Hash bar of Jogjakarta HHH and Merapi HHH back in the 70’s and 80’s. It has certainly not lost any of its charm. A warm and friendly restaurant café that overhangs Jogja’s main shopping street, making it a perfect place to watch the hustle and bustle of Malioboro while enjoying a cold beer, and great Javanese and International food. L e g i a n Garden café has an abundance of long tables making it perfect for Hash groups. The other official Hash bar we have chosen in Jogja is called the ‘Kopitiam’ and is a new restaurant & bar five minutes’ walk from the Legian Garden. Just cross the road and a quick stroll down the adjacent Jalan Sosrowijayan (Sosrowijayan Street) and there you will find ‘Kopitiam’ café bar. Kopitiam is a large spacey café bar serving icy cold beer and Javanese food and snacks. The cafe can comfortably seat 500 to 700 Hashers both inside and outside. They feature the largest outdoor sitting space in the area, offering a spacious central meeting point for Hashers. Kopitiam is another great location for ‘people watching’, as Jalan Sosrowijayan is one of Jogjakarta’s busiest bar & restaurant streets. Our third official Hash bar in Jogjakarta is at the InterHash HQ at the Hotel Rich and is a rooftop beer garden on the second floor of the Hotel, ‘The Beer Garden’ will comfortably hold around 200 Hashers under a starry sky and offers hashers a restaurant service and swimming pool. For those hashers staying in Magelang the hotel restaurant bar is located at the Puri Asri Hotel in Magelang, the hotel we are using for the Red dress run party. See you in Java for an icy cold Beer! A voluptuous “ON ON” dear friends to Borobudur Interhash, in Magelang & Jogjakarta, What!! There has not been a great deal of dialogue or indeed printed material for that matter, about the remarkable Hash Clubs here in Indonesia, where they take their hashing with a sense of affection. One could use words such as fervor, zeal, fanaticism devotion, passion and some four letter terminologies one may not articulate in detail in this manuscript dear reader. Nearly 100 Hash Clubs call Indonesia their home and cries of “On On’ can be heard from Irian Jaya to Sumatra. Hashing in Indonesia very simply evolved something like this. Jakarta was the first locale to instigate a Hash club in Indonesia in 1971 and almost certainly Jeremy ‘Burong’ Pidgeon ex Kuala Lumpur was the fine gentleman responsible for bringing Hash to Indonesia. It took a good two years for Medan to evolve in 1973 and such was the popularity, other major clubs were quickly created, notably Bandung in 1974, Balikpapan and Surabaya in 1975, my beloved Bali, Duri and Soroaka in 1977, Bontang and Rumbai in 1978 and here in Jogjakarta in 1979. One hears stories about the notorious On On On On of Jakarta’s Batavia Hash, the marvelously entertaining hash circles of Balikpapan’s Monday Hash, the comradeship of the Samarinda Hash, indeed dining
and sloshing Bintang at the Legian Garden Hash Pub in Jogja with the Merapi Hash brethren springs to mind too, and one simply must not forget the sheer joy of joining a legendary Bandung or Jogjakarta run. That warm feeling when you hash in Java dear friends, is hash history, running through your loins. Just up the road a spell from here is Bandung, home of textile mills, tea plantations, hot springs and Bandung II H3, which was once, and possibly still is, the biggest kennel in all of Hasdom. In the early 90’s packs regularly reached 1000, now they claim a modest 600 – 700. So what about Java as an island? Over 100 million people live on Java. I find the Javanese a friendly bunch of souls, family orientated, humble and hard working. Although poverty still abounds, the Javanese seemed to brush off hardships and still have time for a cigarette and a smile. One not only acquires a measure of Hash history while in Java, you can pop into the Sultan’s Royal Palace for a nice cup of Java tea, peruse some old colonial memorabilia, or visit the remarkable ‘Mirota’ shop on Malioboro Street for an old curiosity shop experience if ever there was one, and let’s not forget the magnificent temples, with the grandmother of temples herself, Borobudur. If you’re really adventurous and want to foretaste the power of Mother Nature, then may I be so bold as to recommend a climb up the partially active Volcano of Mount Merapi and take a moment to gaze at the natural splendor of its diverse flora and fauna.
Interhash awakens fond memories dear reader! One recalls David “Browneye” Ives and Marty “Garfield” Hanratty mismanaging an epic journey from Bali to Jakarta post Interhash 88 by bus which they called the Java Hash Dash, my goodness those Anker Beer girls were feisty, says he knowingly.
You, dear reader, I am sure, will find out what Magic was referring for yourselves.
I must say it’s an absolute delight to see Interhash return to Indonesia after my cultural soirée of organizing Interhash 1988 in Bali. Jogjakarta Hash Club was founded in May 1979 by an old acquaintance of mine, one Robert ‘Rooter’ Varley, ex Jakarta, and was in Magic’s own words a “dazzling new star of the Hashing scene”.
One night after copious amounts of Bintang Beer, the ghost of our dear departed Gispert appeared to me and cried……..”On On ye valiant brethren, beer and horn in hand, advance and be slain by the mighty beast they call Interhash” -Victor ‘Nightjar’ Mason Bali Hash House Harriers
I sincerely hope you all have a jolly good time in Jogja and at the Borobudur Interhash event, enjoying the camaraderie only an Interhash can offer.

SOME WORDS FROM THE TRAILMASTER We believe we have created runs that will give hashers an exceptional experience and an everlasting memory. Hopefully our diverse run sites that we have organized will satisfy each and every hasher, they are: • Run sites surrounding Borobudur Temple – Borobudur Temple is the second biggest tourist attraction in Indonesia after Bali, and also it is one of the biggest Buddhist temples and is considered as one of the wonders of the world. • Run sites surrounding Mount Merapi – Mount Merapi is considered as one of the most active volcanic mountains in the world. Here, we can see the dried lava flow and debris left from the recent eruption in 2010. • Run sites surrounding Mount Merbabu – hashers will run in the pure fresh mountain air, around vegetable farms owned by locals, natural waterfalls, plus the picturesque pine forests in the valley of the mountain. • Run sites in Kaliurang area – a former vacationing area which was used by the Royal Kesultanan Family and the Dutch officials before Indonesia gained its Independence. All trail masters have dedicated their time and attention to provide hashers with unique and safe locations, carefully monitored by hundreds of our helpers. In the following pages are facts and data for every run site, so you can choose a run that is suitable for you and that hashers will know what to expect from each run, while making sure each run follows Interhash standards. We believe with the combination of local hares and some of the best IH RAs, we will offer you not only an exceptional run but a fun filled circle.

Starting from a 500m asphalt road, passing through rice fields and a winding path to a ramp, hashers will reach the top of the hill where you can enjoy the mountains of Merbabu and Merapi, and valleys and limestone hills. After walking a little bit from there, hashers will see a big rock known as Batu Tumpeng due to its conelike shape. Up the ramp another large rock called Batu Ambeng can be found. Not too far from those two rocks, hashers will pass Batu Kendil, well of course because its shaped like a kendil (a traditional kettle usually made of clay). What is so amazing with this Batu Kendil is that this huge rock is placed on a top of a tiny rock that hashers will think that it could easily fall even by a tiny shake, a great spot to take a picture. Not too far down from this location, hashers will be separated into Medium or Long trails. For those who choose the Medium trail, after seeing these magical rocks, hashers can relax for a stroll back through the woods, mostly downhill, before reaching the on in. For the Long trail we will continue on a 2.5 km up and down path until reaching a water spring, where the path will be even steeper. Here, your physical ability will be challenged to reach the top. Hashers will be amazed with Batu Angin (Batu Cepit) which is two large and tall yet slim rocks, and also the spectacular scenery that surrounds it. From that point on, after the hard and long incline path, hashers will stroll downhill to the on in.
Kembang Limus is to the Southwest of the Borobudur temple (about 3km), with the run site located in a village pasture surrounded by local rice fields. Kembanglimus run site is at Ngasinan, Borobudur area and can be reached approximately 1.5 hours from the Jogja Meeting Point. The two trails for this run site are Short and Medium. At the beginning of the run, hashers traverse on a slightly uphill road that is not too steep, where you will witness a large building that has not been completed and shaped like a dove. According to local residents, the building is planned to be a church. But for no apparent reason the construction was stopped. After that hashers will climb up, going up a slope to a location where many tourists like visit to enjoy the sunrise with the background of the graceful Borobudur temple. Here, you will experience a variety of farms, rice fields and paths. Most of the scenery for both Short and Medium trails at Kembanglimus are rice fields and vegetable farms. Finally after passing through rice fields, gardens and villages, we return to the on in for the CIRCLE.

This run will start and finish at Kalirejo elementary school yard, located in the foothills of Menoreh. This run site will have two trails: Short and Medium. At the beginning of the journey hashers are directly faced with an inclined path through the residential neighborhood and its little gardens planted with sweet potatoes and corn. After that, hashers will reach the pine hills and rock cliffs. Here while hashers take a rest and take a breath for a moment they can see the expanse of rice fields at the bottom of the hills and the scenery of mountains Merbabu and Merapi in the distance. You may be lucky to see villagers working on the pine trees, where the sap is processed into “gondorukemâ€?, namely wood adhesives for furniture. The location for Run site 12 is on the yard of Sekar Pajang Restaurant located at Krasak village, at the road between Magelang-Purworejo (approximately 15 km, southwest of the Borobudur Temple). The Medium and Long trails have their own attractions, due to the locations which are above the irrigation canals and water gates which were made during the Dutch colonial era, and still in good condition and fully functioning. This run site is located at the foot of the Mountain Sumbing, which is the background scenery for the start and the finish of the run. The Red Dress Run Following the tradition of previous Interhashes around the world, this year at the Borobudur Interhash 2012, we are also organizing a Red Dress Run Charity event. Similar to previous Interhash Red Dress Runs, this event will also donate its proceeds to help build a school for disabled children in the Magelang area. We are hoping that this will help those children to receive a better education and provide them with a suitable location to develop their talents. The school will feature a plaque ‘Proudly built by Hashers around the world – Borobudur Interhash 2012’. The Red Dress Run will be held in the city of Magelang on Thursday 24th May 2012. All hashers will receive a red IH2012 Red Dress Run customized sarong. Enjoy a spectacular starting point called Lapangan Rindam IV Diponegoro, which overlooks a huge valley with magnificent mountain views. The location has an historical background where a famous Indonesian army general was captured. For this approximately 5 km walk through the old colonial city of Magelang, you will see many historical buildings left from the 18th century such as the VOC office building, military dorm, military hospital, and an intricate irrigation system running through the entire city., hashers will also go through Chinatown (Pecinan).

How it all started

The Red Dress Run may be the only completely original idea the Hash House Harriers ever had. And it happened nearly by accident.
www.RedDressRuns.org
In 1987, a young lady wearing a red dress emerged from an airplane that had landed in southern California to visit a friend from her high school years. Shortly thereafter, she found herself transported to Long Beach, where her friend intended to introduce her to a zany running group called the “Hash House Harriers.” One member, noting her gender and attire, urged that she “just wait in the truck” until her host returned. With that goading, she ran into history sporting her red dress and heels. A year later, to commemorate the event, the San Diego Hash House Harriers sent “The Lady In Red” an airline ticket to attend the first annual Red Dress Run. Hundreds of male and female hashers adorned themselves in red dresses for a spectacle widely covered by California newspapers and TV news. In addressing the crowd, The Lady in Red suggested that Hash House Harriers hold the Red Dress Run annually as an occasion be used to raise funds for local charities. The tradition of the Hash House Harriers Red Dress Run quickly spread to every corner of the globe, including Beijing, Montreal, Ho Chi Minh City, and Helsinki, Moscow, Tokyo, Washington, DC, Hobart (Australia) and countless other locations. Over the years, the Red Dress Run has been very successful in raising millions of dollars for a wide variety of local charities. The New Orleans Hash House Harriers attracted 7,000 participants to their Red Dress Run in 2010, raising more than $200,000 for 50 local charities. Today the Red Dress Run is an integral part of the Hash House Harriers’ heritage and is as iconic as the Royal Selangor Club where the Hash House Harriers was born and as sacred to them as founder A.S. Gispert’s drinking vessel. It’s a tradition born before few organizations turned to running events as a way to raise money and long before anyone ran in a dress of any color.

Organize a Great Train Rumble and they will come, and they certainly kept their promise. Nearly two hundred hashers from every corner of the globe converged on Jakarta for what has now been branded the ‘Son of the Great Train Rumble’. The Kemang district in Jakarta was their destination to begin a four night five day journey that would culminate at Interhash in the colonial city Jogjakarta. With a local Jakarta Hash haunt, the ‘Eastern Promise’ hosting Friday’s inaugural welcome party, where hashers will meet fellow Train Rumblers while sipping copious amounts of Jakarta’s famous Bintang beer. With beer in hand, song in heart, after a good feed the band come on and we dance. It’s Saturday, and Train Rumblers are joining Jakarta’s prestigious TGIS (‘Thank God It’s Saturday’) and Krakatau Chapters for today’s mega run. Hashers hop on the buses nursing hangovers and backpacks. Take one fresh Jakarta run, add 200 global hashers, dip in Bintang beer, mix thoroughly and enjoy. After the run, a BBQ at the run site, then its circle up, hop on the bus and the Rumblers head off to the Everest Bar, a popular hash On On pub at Jakarta’s naughty Blok M for the On On On On. A band plays and we dance. Debauchery is all very well for some but when it’s a 7am wake up call for Breakfast to catch a 11.35am train to Bandung, get out the Beroccas! Looking like Phineas Fogg’s rejects, Interhashers converged on Jakarta’s huge and expansive train station. The train arrives, Beer was loaded, backpacks were stacked,
Rumblers were seated, whistles were blown…all aboard! Executive coaches are clean with AC that seat 50 hashers comfortably, and hey, you can get a foot massage on route too! It’s a three hour train journey to Bandung and the first 45 minutes are spent leaving the suburbs, then the train begins its slow climb into the mountains and the scenery starts to become special….very special. Through picturesque Tea Plantations, over death defying aqueducts, extremely narrow tunnels, perilous one track bridges suspended 200 meters in the air, sudden drops to your left and right, and brightly coloured old fashion signal boxes.Every signal box has a finely uniformed guard who niftily appears out of his box and salutes each passing train. Hashers return his salute but with far fewer fingers. Beers are spilled as cameras flash, there’s something to see on either side of the train. On arrival at Bandung 3 hours later, the locals think the circus has come to town. The Bandung train station is quaint and colourful. Hashers must cross the tracks to get to the main building and notice a really cool train shop selling all sorts of wonderful train related goodies. Kids in candy stores are no match for hashers in train shops. Bandung is famous for Jeans, Hash Clubs and altitude. On route to the hotel the notorious ‘North Sea’ bar is pointed out, where certain sweet painted ladies dwell in readiness for unsuspecting bright eyed Interhashers. Another Welcome party awaits, some hashers go to bed,
The Full Moon Run is an Interhash sanctioned addition to the main event weekend and will be held on Monday 28th May at 5.30pm. We will be running through the old colonial city of Jogja to take in the popular shopping district of Marlioboro, the Sultan’s palace, Water Palace, culminating in the Pub, Restaurant and red light area of Sosrowijayan. The run will start at 5.30pm and a drinks party afterwards. The cost is US$20 or the Indonesian equivalent to the rate on the day. You can register either on the day of the run at the run, or at the Full Moon Run booth at the Interhash Bazaar at the Hotel Rich from Tuesday 22nd May to Saturday 26th May between 9am to 4pm. For your rego fee you will receive a ‘special edition’ Interhash Full Moon Run tshirt, Beer, Snacks and after run Down Down party. Sydney Full Moon will be your hosts so to register send an email to The General hanskumpel@hotmail.com with your Hash Name, Hash Club and Tshirt size in inches or cms.
others plunge into the North Sea to surface in time for another hash run with Bandung Hash 1, the sister club of what some claim to be the largest hash chapter in the world, the Bandung Hash 2. Imagine Custer’s Last Stand meets Charge of the Light Brigade, add beer and a Welsh Male voice choir, well that would describe the run and ensuing circle. Another BBQ at the runsite, circle and live band at Bandung Hash 2’s very own clubhouse…cool! Gluttons for punishment head back to the North Sea bar. It’s Tuesday so it must be Bandung and weary eyed Interhashers catch the train down to Jogjakarta. The landscape is blurred, not from speed but from beers past and present. The journey is 7 hours, volcanoes whiz by while the foot masseur works overtime and the beer boys are abused. On arrival at Jogjakarta a traditional local band welcome untraditional Interhashers with ‘Long Train Running’ and a Bob Marley song not about trains at all. The ‘Kopitiam’ Hash Pub beckons us for our Jogjakarta Welcome Party with more free flow beer and all this before the Red Dress Run and the Interhash weekend. Whew!
Welcome to Interhash Java, now what was the name of that Bob Marley song again?

Rules Mmmm, normally rules and Interhash don’t mix, but in the very serious business of Interhash down downs, there is one basic rule. Drink as much as you can as fast as you can and avoid spillage. As in each Interhash, a trusty stopwatch will be used and the whole event monitored and judged by Interhash luminaries Garfield, The Penguin and Mr. Magoo. May the best Man andthe best Woman win!
Drink it Down Down Down!
The Down Down Championship has been a part of almost every Interhash since 1978. At InterHash 1980 in Kuala Lumpur it was won by Aktar Singh of Seletar H3 who ever since has been known on the Hash as “The Champ”. He drank the 2 litre Down Down in 53 seconds and for his accomplishment was awarded a giant wooden penis. Since then the consumption time has steadily dropped and the trophy has been won by The Fireman (Melbourne H3), Mongo (Auckland H3), Hooray Henry (London H3) on 3 occasions, Suipe (Marlborough H3) on 2 occasions, Deep Throat (Wellington H3) on 3 occasions, Pisspot1 (Episkopi H3), Too Tuff (Quorn H3) and RTC (Colombo H3) now on 2 occasions. The 2 litre mug was presented to the InterHash community by Jakarta H3. The fastest Down Down from the 2 litre mug is an unbelievable 9.6 seconds, by the magnificent and now retired 3-time Champion, Hooray Henry at InterHash Phuket 1992. The Harriets Down Down Championship began at InterHash Sydney in 1984 with a 1 litre mug and has been won by Gulletsby (Sydney Harriets), Tinny Cobby (Surry H3), Gypsy (Rotorua H3) twice, Deep Throat (Bangkok Harriets), Martini (Cheltenham & Cotswold H3) twice, Lee Ah Lee (Kamunting H3), Bird Table (Auckland Harriets), and No Mercy (Lagos H3) twice.

The slowest time for the 1 litre mug, donated by Bangkok Harriets in memory of their late Champion, “Deep Throat”, is 23 seconds and the fastest Down Down is only 8.1 seconds by No Mercy of Lagos Hash at InterHash Chiang Mai 2006. The Competition moved to Perth in 2008 amidst much confusion where the event would eventually take place. The outcome of the lack of communication was that only two Harriets, Mimi of Perth Harriets and Martini of Cheltenham & Cotswold H3, the Goa Champion stepped forward to compete. Only four Harriers, Bootleg of Colombo H3, Jiffy of Perton Perverts H3; and the joint defending Champions, Deep Throat of Wellington H3 a three-time previous Champion; and RTC of Colombo H3 decided to compete. Obviously some in the InterHash crowd had heard the announcement as there were about 300-400 present in the circle when the Competition began soon after 5.00 pm on the Sunday and after the circle at the end of the Browneye Memorial Old Farts Stroll, they provided enthusiastic encouragement and welcomed the participation of all the competitors. Unfortunately, neither trophy was available for presentation after the Down Down Champions finished their business. The Harrier’s trophy was stolen from behind the Old Fart’s

Bar on Saturday night and the Harriet’s trophy was seen in various hands on Saturday night but not since. The event moved back to the mainstage at IH 2010 at Kuching, this time the controversy centered on the dreaded spillage during the Harriers competition. With Deep Throat making the best time just fractions of a second ahead of RTC, the amount of spillage from Deep Throat was significant, so much so that both the judges and Deep Throat conceding that spillage was his downfall and honorably conceding defeat. There was a surprise winner of the Harriettes Competition with LSD from Perth HHH stepping up to take the fastest time with next to no spillage. For her victory LSD was awarded a giant wooden torso. The Down Down Competition Mismanagers would like to congratulate RTC, a three time winner and LSD on being the reigning InterHash Down Down Champions. During the Borobudur 2012 Interhash the Down Down Competition will be conducted in its appropriate place on the main stage on Saturday night with both defending Champions in attendance.
The Harriettes pewter mug has been found and will be restored to its former glory with a good polishing. LSD is bring the wooden torso. And the Harriers Mug is winging its way from Jakarta and the wooden prick trophy will travel from New Zealand.

If hashing through millions acres of tropical forest, the longest coastline in the world, dozens of volcanoes, hundreds of lakes, exploring the cultural heritage such as temples, palaces and old towns, shop till you drop and indulging your tongue is every hasher’s dream... then the one and only destination to the hasher’s paradise on this planet is Indonesia a.k.a Nusantara a.k.a Zamrud Khatulistiwa (The Emerald of The Equator). Luckily we had a good luck charm named L.P. Jeter. With his long experience as one of Boeing experts, he created the most comprehensive supporting systems we’ve ever had. It became the template that all the tasks were based on. He made all complexities executable. Wise men say, only a fool would try to organize a big hash event. Without Mismanagement there wouldn’t be a hash. We are only human guys, we make mistakes. There will always be a mess up in every hash event, we had lots of it in PAPIH 2011. Just some simple advice, Organizing a big Interhash event is not a Sunday school picnic or a walk in the park, so instead of complaining just enjoy it.

Some words from Dr Ain Oil… “Around the city, there are limited Hazards’” per the Perth Interhash 2008 Souvenir Magazine. There are currently three Survivors of Seventeen Interhashes and all are Hazards with limitations. In the photograph, the three are recognizable by the cut of their jib whilst the tallest Hasher Is Wolfgang “The Wolf ” Gust, our German father figure, who died on trail two years ago. One is Australian, one English and one Malaysian; all three were groomed to hashing in the Indonesia or Malaysia and are part of the Hash House Hazards (HHHz) brotherhood of hashers. In the photograph, the three without full payment up front but more of pay as you go or pay as you run. Yet they still managed to make a profit and transfer the surplus to Kuala Lumpur to organize the second Interhash. What a change from today’s scene. Survivors are recognizable by the cut of their jib and the tallest hasher is a German, Wolfgang “The Wolf ” Gust, our father figure, who died on trail two years ago. Allan “Chee Bye” Chee. I started hashing in 1969 in Penang, forced to by my then employer Guinness who was

launching a new beer “Gold Harp”. Became a Joint master in ’70 or ’71 then moved KL and ran hash with KL Hash and then Seremban HHH. In 1977 co-founded PJ HHH (Animales) with Toda and the late Alex the Bear. In 1991 again co-founded, with The Bear, PJ Hazards.(PJHHHz). Foolishly, I am still hashing and recently helped start Hash House Haggards Hobblers (For over 55 years of age where running is not allowed). In my mind, the best Interhash was the first in Hong Kong. Being the first one, we just signed up on blind Hash faith. That faith was justified and I could not believe the courage of the organizers to take such a risk in gathering a bunch (About 800?) of drunken hashers Unquote. CB hashes regularly with PJHHHZ and PJ Animales. He introduced Interhash to Malaysia as Mother Hash (HHH) under the famed John Duncan declined an invitation to join us in Hong Kong. At a meeting at Easter 1978 immediately after a most successful four days hashing in HK, it was decided to hold Interhash every two years and that HHH would be asked to host the next one in 1980. CB promised that if HHH again declined, then his kennel, the Animales, would host it in Petaling Jaya. Phil “Philthy” Chapman. He has been hashing since the early Seventies (or before?) and is a legend in Oceania as a great hasher and a renowned R.A. (or Bomoh as we call it on HHH); beware if you meet him in a Circle. survivors see little of him except at Interhash but words of yet another exploit in the humanitarian field philter through from Australia, Indonesia or Vietnam ….be it in relief aid (as in Aceh) or the nether world were AID is spelt with a final S. He is always on call by email and his cheery grin always welcomes us when we meet. Bob (Drainoil) Leonard. I am a Hashaholic and the Hash has been an integral part of my life since whenever. I first came across Hash when working in Singapore (then a British territory) in late 1962 (SHHH was only a few months old) as I enquired about a bunch of runners who met regularly on Mondays; but when I delved further, they told me that I was new to the Colony and as they ran in the Outback, I should wait until I had a driving license and a car and ask again. I was then transferred to Malacca and forgot about it, wasting four years of my life (hashless) before I found it again. As an aside, Indonesia and Malaysia were at war from 1962-1965 (remember Pontian and Labis?) And Australia, New Zealand and UK all sent troops…which eventually helped spread hashing to those countries and beyond). Only in February 1966, posted to Penang, I reported for work on a Monday and the diary had Penang Hash House Harriers (PH3) for 1730H that day…and hashing took over.
Bob “Drain Oil” Leonard
PH3 was then eight months old and the seventh, and youngest, hash then. What wonderful hash country Penang had then, with rice paddies, rubber estates, swamps and jungle, let alone the beaches. I then spent three years hashing with HHH (Mother Hash, of course, was never officially called the KLHHH as it was the only kennel from 1938 to 1962 (except for the Bordighera hash) and did not need to add KL to the name. I returned I then returned to PH3 in 1969 where I first met CB as he then took up hashing. I have enjoyed hashing in many different places but Sabah (for three years) and then Hong Kong (for 15) bring the best memories. Currently I hash in winter in Malaysia with HHH, Batu H4 and PJHHHz (with CB) and in summer in England with the London hashes including Barnes H3, West LondonH3 and WeybridgeH3. When not exploring the global world of hashing. Finally I look forward to seeing the fruits of labor of L.P. “Midget Molester” Jeter who has put so much effort into co-coordinating what promises to be a fabulous Interhash in Borobudur. InterHash is a term used to describe a biannual gathering of the world’s Hashers. The event was first held in Hong Kong in 1978. While the term was not formally adopted until InterHash Kuala Lumpur in 1980, the term was certainly in use in 1978 at Hong Kong and displayed on welcoming banners at Kai Tak airport by the Committee of the 1st InterHash Unconvention. Pre 1978 InterHash events In 1966 Kuala Lumpur Hash (correctly known as Mother), then emerging from several years of declining numbers, invited runners from Ipoh and Singapore to join them for Mother’s 1000th run. There were 24 visitors, all hosted and paid for by Mother. In 1973, Mother celebrated its 1500th run and numbers rose to 300 plus, with guest outnumbering locals 3-1. The event saw the world’s first Hash banner and T-shirt. There was already talk of staging regular gatherings and of bringing the world’s Hashers together. It was Hong Kong who first accepted the challenge.

Hong Kong, 1978 The idea that grew into InterHash came from Barrie Griffith, but in the end it was Wes ‘Festering Pastit’ Parfitt, who organised a gathering of world Hashers during the 4 days of the 1978 Easter holiday. For the first time a fee. Sunday saw the pack in the New Territories, where a giant curry was served from the back of an Army truck by Ghurkha soldiers. A core of senior Hash men gathered on Sunday and decided to make this a biannual event, with John Duncan provisionally accepting the honour on behalf of KL. In his acceptance note Duncan used the term InterHash to describe the KL event, though this did not represent the term’s first usage. Kuala Lumpur 1980 On Friday InterHashers gathered at the very roots of Hashing, the Selangor Club, for a night of brilliant atmosphere, ice-cold beer and monsoonal rain, which enabled Victor ‘Nightjar’ Mason, clad in white silk, to demonstrate his body sliding techniques in the mud outside The Long Bar.A monsoonal downpour of biblical proportions caused electricity outages, but the show went “on on” and introduced many visitors to the true nature of Asian ‘shiggy’! Jakarta 1982 In 1982 Jakarta was still considered a hardship posting. The main venue was at the Cibubur Scout Camp. The evening’s cabaret was memorable for the performance of ‘Miss Semarang’ and there were impressive displays by Captain Knockers of Sydney Harriets and the Jakarta Pussy Hash. On Sunday, InterHashers gathered in the square around Monas. On Monday about 500 turned up at the ISCI Sports Club for the usual Jakarta H3 run after which many went “on on” to Singapore and then Mother’s 2000th run.
Sydney 1984 Ole ‘Sparks’ Vigersol (exJakarta H3) was chairman of InterHash Sydney 1984, while Noelene ‘Captain Knockers’ Shepherd was InterHash Secretary. It was a big decision to take InterHash out of Asia in 1984 and only 1562 registered. The New Crest Hotel in the bawdy red-light district of Kings Cross became an unofficial gathering place and the Hasher’s good behaviour surprised the Sydney police, who had turned out in force, expecting riots from ‘the wild drinking club’. Pattaya 1986 Staged by Bangkok and Pattaya Hashes, this was the most international gathering of InterHashers to date, and exceeded 2000 registrations Tim ‘Magic’ Hughes of Bangkok H3, who had only been Hashing since 1979, not only led the Bangkok bid in Sydney 1984 but he also became InterHash chairman of this then massive task which was complicated by very limited computer facilities. Frank ‘Whorator ‘Benfield then Pattaya H3 GM, was Magic’s deputy and Mismanager of stage activities. Horse Thompson made another appearance as guest of honour. In Pattaya City, the many bar girls and their associated bars continued for days to count the takings. Bali 1988 It was Victor “Nightjar’ Mason and Bali H3’s turn to stage InterHash in 1988. The event was staged on the Nusa Dua Peninsula. Nonetheless, Kuta town nearby also became a hive of InterHash activity. Registrants numbered 2247 There was a great opening show, including a giant 6 meter paper
and cane Ogoh-Ogoh monster burnt to appease the Spirits and encourage harmony so important to the Balinese. Manila 1990 In 1990 it was the Philippine Experience which became known as ‘The Thriller in Manila’. The initial Mismanager, Mark ‘Black Marker’ Blacker was forced by work commitments to stand aside as Chairman, leaving Ken ‘Grumbles’ Grumley and Rob ‘Malibog’ Denny to assume responsibility as Joint Grand Masters of InterHash. Political unrest kept registration down to 1610 and the US government felt compelled to forbid its employees from entering the Philippines. This InterHash entertainment was supplemented by some of the world’s best LBFMs wriggling and writhing on the giant stage at the Coke factory. The InterHash committee selected several charities to benefit from the surplus Pesos as well as passing the regular US$15,000 onto Phuket. Phuket 1992 Phuket H3’s successful bid was always encouraged by Magic. At the time Phuket had only completed 200 or so runs but Paul ‘King Klong’ James and his Mismanagement team at this burgeoning Thai resort town staged a highly successful InterHash to the benefit of the almost 2300 InterHashers. The traditional Down Down competition saw Hooray Henry slurp his beer the quickest and it just as quickly rebounded into an overflowing vomitorium. King Klong noted that Hamersley H3 was there to “take it up the arse” and acknowledged the presence of the Pattaya Dirt Road H3 who helped with Hooray Henry’s favourite event.
Rotorua 1994 InterHash in the Land of Gandolph and Frodo, far from the centre of Hashdom seemed a gamble. However, justification was provided when more than 4100 InterHashers made their way to ‘The Thunder Down Under’ in Rotorua. Under the tender mismanagement of Ken ‘The Hound’ Pascoe and Bruce ‘Father’ Eagar, GM of Rotorua H3, InterHash 1994 amid the hot springs and sulphuric aromas of one of New Zealand’s major tourist destinations left a lasting impression on all. From the opening Haka to the free police transport for drunken Hashers the hosts made all feel welcome. Cyprus 1996 John ‘Urine’ Jackson, and his committee helped make InterHash Cyprus 1996 worthwhile. A European venue, plus the growth of UK Hashing, meant that of the 3261 registrants, 882 were Brits, more than the USA and Australia combined. Urine issued US$20,000 to KL as start-up funding for IH 1998. Kuala Lumpur 1998 Surfing a huge voting wave of support at Cyprus, InterHash returned to KL to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Hashing with the then largest ever gathering of InterHashers, 5580, in attendance. There was a great emphasis on occasion, including a display on the history of Hashing “Tumbling” Bill Panton. KL 1998 also passed onto the Hobart committee the amount of US$20,000.00 it had received from Cyprus.
Tasmania 2000 The “perfect InterHash” is how Hobart 2000 has been labeled by some of the 4,000 who attended. Alan ‘Easy Rider’ Rider and Denis ‘Scrambles’ Ransley were determined to mismanage InterHash to a ruthlessly efficient business plan and it worked for most of the preparation period. Just a few weeks before the event, it seemed that this InterHash was about to be disrupted completely when several of the committee were hospitalized following a vehicle accident in which the InterHash minibus fell over. The show however went ahead in the perfect manner described previously. Tasmania 2000 certainly set a new benchmark in InterHashing and it was a very high one. Goa 2002 The idea of an Indian-based InterHash originated with Ian ‘Bullfighter’ Booth who visualized the event in Madras. However, winning InterHash 2002 fulfilled the dream of Eric ‘Digit’ McGaw of Hyderabad H3 and 3597 InterHashers registered for InterHash 2002. It was Digit who persuaded Bullfighter that Goa was the natural venue but sadly, Bullfighter was unable to make it to Hobart so it was Digit who led the presentation and became event chairman. InterHash Goa 2002 was mismanaged by a mostly international committee with perhaps more Hashing and InterHashing experience than any other committee and it adopted the motto ‘Hashing by Hashers for Hashers’. Cardiff 2004 Barry ‘GBH’ Pope is a mildmannered, modest Welshman and this writer tells lies! The concept that InterHash in the UK was OK had gathered
weight since InterHash Cyprus 1996. In the end Cardiff was selected to host the event and GBH its anointed Mismanager. Held in the renowned Millennium Dome with plenty of accommodation close by, InterHash and Cardiff proved a good combination. Registration was in the impressive Town Hall. By Friday the weather was perfect and the next two days provided excellent runs through some of Wales’ best countryside. Chiang Mai 2006 Hashers from 6 countries got together to stage InterHash 2006 which, with pre and post rambles, was promoted as a ‘Mekong Region’ event. The Mismanagement was led by the 1st woman to ever fill the position, Wichanee ‘Imelda’ Ratanapan and comprised representatives from just about every country in the UN. Then 6,000 InterHashers decided to register before the process was capped and Imelda struggled to deal with the biggest InterHash ever. Eventually, about 5800 attended. Well done Imelda and your crew of many, who even when crisis arrived still pushed On, On, in true InterHash Mismanagement style. Perth 2008 InterHash probably came to Perth too late. The Australian economy was booming and the currency strong. As a result finding a venue at an affordable price was an immediate and considerable problem. This also affected the Down
Down Competition with venue management deciding that this was ‘binge drinking’ and could not take place within their grounds. It being an Easter weekend created additional problems. On the positive side just about everything organized by XYZ, Silver Fox and their Hash Committee went well, and the runs got particularly good reviews as did the goody bags. Many individual committee members drew praise for their hard work. Kuching 2010 Kuching certainly had its controversy. On the positive side the beautiful city of Kuching provided an excellent setting and the stars of the show were the local residents who gave a warm welcome to 4500 or so hashers from 60 different counties. Beyond that there was plenty to complain about. While nobody can blame the committee for the tropical storm that broke out at the start of the Red Dress Run, it did seem a poor omen! Ironically didn’t rain again until after the result of InterHash 2012 announcement. Held in the Kuching Civic Centre, the arena was a little small for the majority to see anything other than by relay screens. The Indian food gets some credit for being better than the rest. The beer was Tiger and plenty of it. Wine was limited. It was the voting for Interhash 2012 however that will always be the issue that 2010 will be remembered for.

THE HASH HERITAGE FOUNDATION AND ITS MEMBERS The Hash House is designed for the benefit of worldwide Hashers (past and present), so that full access to its facilities will be by way of membership. It is our principal objective to reconstruct the Hash House as a tangible symbol of the origin of the Hash movement and as a resource for the enjoyment of Hashers worldwide. It will provide a home for: • The Hash Museum • The Hash Genealogy • The Hash Memorabilia • The Hash Library • The Hash Fraternity Centre consisting of a Hash Bar, Meeting Lounge All membership payments, along with corporate sponsorship, donations by individuals and Hash chapters will be utilized for the reconstruction of the Hash House. Taking up membership of the Hash House can be your way of contributing and becoming part of the ongoing history of The Hash House Harriers and the Hash House, the “Home of the Hash”. Or give membership as a gift. It will make an excellent long term gift for any hasher.

The International Hash Directory has for years been produced at the time of each Interhash and at Interhash 1998 the GM’s Meeting passed a consensus motion suggesting that future Interhashes may consider publishing a printed Hash Directory based on the information available from the various Regional Hash websites. It was decided late last year that for a number of reasons there would be no printed version of the Hash Directory for Interhash 2012. This decision was based partly on cost considerations and partly on the fact that a huge number of printed directories were found surplus at Kuching. Further research and discussion however revealed that the main reason for the surplus printed directories in Kuching was not that hashers did not want them but that many of the goody bags had no directory inserted and hashers were not aware of this omission when they collected their bags. Other considerations were that the IH2012 budget for a full generous goody bag was becoming exhausted so much so that purchasing books and/or disks would have impacted the size/quality of the goody bag contents. In addition to the cost of printing the directories there were still many other costs which would have been incurred such as shipping costs, storage space, labor costs and delivery to end users. Over and above this there was a call by many hashers suggesting that a printed Hash Directory
was outdated and that instead this information should be kept updated and made available online where hashers can access the information from anywhere in the world. Despite the decision made by Interhash 2012, it is now clear from more vocal Interhash opinions that the printed hardcopy should not be seen as dead but that a strong possibility exists of this being reintroduced at Interhash 2014. Many hashers do not have access to computers and value the benefit of being able to browse through a printed Hash Directory to locate Hash Chapters around the world. Regional Hash Websites (The multitude of On-line Hash Directories that focus on specific areas of the world) are maintained by a unique team of volunteer Regional Hash Webmasters who must be recognised and thanked for their continued commitment to regularly update their Regional Hash Directories. It is hoped that with the continued support of the Regional Hash Webmasters to regularly update their Regional Hash website, the www.thehashhouse.org website can be referred to as the recognised listing of Hash Chapters in the respective regions with updates being added there.
