Editor’s Notes

Vol. 13 No. 1

If great HHH events are your thing, 2014 may turn out to be the best year since Gispert led his horde of merry harriers out of the Hash House into the jungles of Kuala Lumpur, Malaya in 1938. Europe’s best events this year include festive weekends in the Czech Republic, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Finland and Norway. If you want to be at what may turn out to be the best HHH celebration on the planet this year, be sure to be in Brussels this July. Asia will host the first World Interhash in China in 2014, as well as Nash Hash events in Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia and India. Singapore celebrates 52 years of hashing while Indochina Mekong Hash returns to the Golden Triangle. Will 2014 be your year to discover if hashing really is more fun in the Philippines? Proof positive that there is no intelligent life east of Interstate 5 on the left coast of the USA, HashMat 2014 commemorates exemplary stupidity in New Haven, Connecticut. Light up the night in Ocean City, Maryland in March, or in Boston at the Marathon Hash in April. Sweet home Alabama, where the elite will meet in Mobile for some real southern hospitality. Even if you missed the ski season this winter, you can show up at Brian Head, Utah for a resort full of survivors of hashing in Korea. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas...and perhaps that is best when Sin City holds a Red Dress Run. Or, how about Scottsdale, Arizona, where hashers can bask in the sun at the Phoenix RDR in April. The IndyScent H3 will host USA Nash Hash in a place known for fast drivers, fast women and public drunkenness. With hundreds of great events coming up this year, it’s time to make your hash holiday plans for 2014. The Harrier Magazine Team in Asia, America and Europe looks forward to seeing you on trail soon. Happy hashing. Jim Edens Editor-in-Chief & Founder Harrier Magazine - Fun on the run since 2002 International Edition with readers in 100 countries www.HarrierMagazine.com

Best events of

2014:

Europe by Julie Burgess

TOP EVENT: BRUSSELS 2014, A BEER ODYSSEY This is not only the premiere event in Europe for 2014, it is the European Party of the decade. First advertised in 2006, the time is finally approaching. On 25-27 July, 2014, Higgins has arranged tankers, kegs and bottles of several varieties of glorious Belgian Beer. As this is a truly European event, there will be wines and cuisine from all corners of the continent. More than twenty different hash clubs will lay trails in the Belgian Country side, through villages and the spectacular Flemish cities. The Ball Breaker will feature hilly terrain, cliffs and views of Historic Dinant. The party is held in a historic Flemish style warehouse complex called Tour & Taxi, just a 10 minute walk from the city http://www.tour-taxis.com. The participants will reminisce about this party for years to come. There are still approximately 100 places remaining. Brussels 2014 should be sold out by March. The event theme has just been announced, and it will be comic strips. Belgium is well known for comic characters like the Smurfs and Tin Tin. For inspiration, one can visit the Belgian Comic strip Centre or have a look at one of many comic strip murals on the walls around Brussels. http://www. comicscenter.net. If this is not enough, join one of the 12 pre or post rambles as mentioned in the October Edition of Harrier Magazine. For even more information, check out the Brussels 2014 website, Pre & Post Rambles http://www.brussels2014.net.

MOST INTERESTING ANNIVERSARY HASHES MADRID H3 30th ANNIVERSARY Madrid HHH will be welcoming hashers to Madrid on 23-25 May. Normally their weekends are held throughout Spain, and their Javea weekend is always superb. In 2014, the Madrid Hash is inviting hashers to Madrid, the land of bull fighting, tapas, Goya and Enrique Iglesias. On Friday, there is a pub crawl through the city. On Saturday, there will be a hash run in a scenic location, and on Saturday night, the hash returns to Madrid to experience some nightlife. http://www.madridhhh.com

OSLO H3 25th ANNIVERSARY Oslo H3 was the host of the Incredible Interscandic 2009, north of the Arctic Circle. The only possible complaint of this Interscandic was the fact that the hard boiled eggs were not sliced to the satisfaction of one of the hashers. This is a true story. Enjoy another well organized weekend on 13-15 June and celebrate the OH3 25th Anniversary. Experience hashing in and around Oslo, one of Scandinavia’s beautiful capitals, nestled in the mountains and fjords of Norway. The venue is the Viubrüten holiday centre:

Venue for BRUSSELS 2014, A BEER ODYSSEY

http://www.viubraatan.net/. In June, the evenings are long and light, so expect not to sleep. On Friday, hashers can enjoy the light summer evening with first a pub crawl in Oslo, and then continue the party with a campfire at the venue. On Saturday, after breakfast (and aquavit), the morning is free to enjoy the surroundings. In the afternoon, there will be a choice of 3 runs in the lovely surrounding forests. This will be followed by circle, dinner and party. On Sunday, the bus will bring the hashers back to Oslo for a sightseeing trail, ending in a pub for lunch and drinks. http:// oh3.no/. HOLE IN THE ICE 20th ANNIVERSARY The Fins are not known for their conversation, yet they are well known for their saunas. It is deeply entrenched in their culture. Adjacent to the sauna, one might find a carefully crafted hole in the ice. Imagine hashing through a winter wonderland of deep snow whilst drinking bizarre Finnish liquorish schnapps, jumping in the icy cold water and then running very quickly to the sauna. After the sauna, there is a big fire where the dinner is prepared. This very unique hash event is hosted by the Helsinki Hash House Hashers and Harriettes on 28 February to 02 March. On Friday, the hashers

gather for some beers in central Helsinki waiting for the party bus to take them with wilderness. This year, they will venture to Kotoranta, Kiljava to find The Hole in The Ice. (Note that there is strict sauna etiquette in Finland. Only hashers capable of following the etiquette are welcome.) http://hiti.harrier.ch. PRAGUE H3 30th ANNIVERSARY The Prague Hash welcomes hashers to celebrate their 30th Anniversary on 2-4 May at the Fairy Tale Castle of Krivoklat, 55 km from Prague www. krivoklat.cz. One can run through the hilly Czech countryside and drink the cool crisp Czech beer. On Sunday, the hash bus will take the hashers back to Prague, one of the most beautiful capitals of Europe www.praguehhh.com:81/1984.

T

he Puerto Galera House Harriers meet every Saturday afternoon. Runs usually start at 3.30pm from Captn Greggs Dive Resort on Sabang Beach (see our Getting Here page) except for special occasions when the time may be altered (see our Events page).

The Hash fee is currently 300 pesos for men, 200 pesos for women and 150 pesos for children and non-drinkers. The fee includes beer, gin juice or soft drinks that you consume during the period of the Hash as well as any transportation costs when the Hash travels to outlying locations. First time runners pay an additional fee of 150 pesos which includes a t-shirt. Founded in October 1990 by Dave ‘Aussie’ Austin, PGH3 is a family hash and people of all ages and sexes are welcome but bear in mind that some traditional bawdy songs are sung at our circles (see our Songbook and decide for yourself if it’s suitable for the kiddies).

S

pring City Kunming hosted the annual inter-Mekong event this year. Major city in Yunnan province, with a benign climate, due to its 600m elevation and tropical latitude.

A big city, population around 6m, it is home to a small but active hash. I had reservations about the ability of a small group of hashers to manage an event of this scale. It was clear from the Kunming H3 webshite that there was a small core of committed hashers who set runs on a revolving door basis. Anyway, I chanced it, registering quite late, and was

glad I did, with a well organised and memorable event.

A novelty that should be followed elsewhere, is that the website included full details of what the goody bag would contain. This might diminish the surprise element (goody!) but has practical benefits. 2 t-shirts were listed, and the travelling hasher can reduce the luggage that might otherwise be brought. At other events, hashers have counted on couple of t-shirts, only to find that the Bya John O’Donovan wearables in the goodyby bag consist of a pairH3 of Australia shorts, 2 Shithead, WACT pairs of socks and a dozen condoms. hmmm. van@act.gov.au photos by John.ODonovan

A

ir Asia X has been flying into the Gold Coast for several years now and finally the time had come to take the SHOT out of Asia for the first time. Hares Scandal (Ali) & TwoCan (Denis), previous residents of Malaysia and regular SHOT attendees now live back on the Sunshine Coast so the choice of venue was easy – just up the road from their home in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. They wanted to give the visitors a real Australian bush experience for the Saturday run and the Lilyponds Holiday Park provided the proximity to the Mapleton State Forest and also a variety of accommodation options to choose from. After the five star experience last June in Siem Reap, Australia was always going to be a back to basics SHOT and the hares worked hard to keep the costs down with self catering food and drinks in the park camp kitchen with Tisnot in charge and a host of helpers.
