Editor’s Notes

The Ides of March are upon us.

We start our March into spring in Tanzania where Head Mistress joins the Dar Es Salaam Hash House Harriers. A block of ice does not last long in the East African sun, so you must be quick to sit on it before it melts, or use it to keep the local Safari Beer cold. Palm Springs is southern California’s answer to fun in the sun all winter long. The new Palm Springs H3 fills the void left when the Betty Ford Rehab Hash retired gracefully after 30 wonderful years. A short drive from Palm Springs across the desert highway is the upcoming Phoenix Red Dress Run held in honor of the dearly departed Lady in Red. Quick Drawers traveled to Hong Kong to attempt four hashes in four days. Could he do it? Read his account to find out. Hong Kong is a short flight from Chengdu, which will host one of two All China Nash Hashes this year. For those who can’t make it to Chengdu this month, head to All China Nash Hash Two in Beijing this September. The prolific HHHiggins, mastermind of Brussels Beer Odyssey in 2014 gives us a glimpse of European Hashes taking place this time of the year. April fools will be treated to 24 Belgium Brews next

month. Neptunus will arise from the sea to celebrate his 65th birthday and 25 years of hashing at Dutch Nash Hash. Vienna is calling the faithful to Eurohash this May. Jay “Hops” Hopkins interviews Hash Hero Bill “Bad Dog” Severe on the occasion of his 2500th run with the Washington DC area hashes. Find out what it takes to accumulate that many HHH runs and which memorable trails were his favorites. Sydney will host 50 Golden Years of Hashing Down Under. If one week is not enough for you, stretch it out with another 50th Anniversary in Hobart, Tasmania.

The Interhash Fiji countdown clock is ticking. Grab your sunscreen, wax up your boogie board and plan your trip to the islands of paradise in 2018. Check out the top Running and Racing events coming up in the Asia Pacific region over the next few months. And for the not-so-serious “hash runners” The Stockholm Absolut Hash Trash offers another month of irreverent humor. I look forward to seeing you on trail soon. ulia ‘Head Mistress’ Stanton’s recent travels in Sub – Saharan Africa have just taken her to Tanzania in East Africa where she joined the Dar Es Salaam Hash House Harriers on their regular Monday evening hash.

Last month I found myself in Dar Es Salaam for work and naturally I looked up the local Hash House Harriers chapter. The website told me ‘since everyone and there mother is on Facebook, we’ve decided to use our fb group to post updates for weekly hashes, we are entirely too lazy to post to more than one website’. So doing as instructed I joined their Facebook group and found an active hash with updates to the next hash meet up and location. (I wish more hash groups who are too lazy about their website would have such a message.)

ai Kung Saturday H3, Jan 21st with a 4PM start, was the first time my travel dates had matched up with this monthly hash groups schedule. It was worth the wait. SKSH3 contact “GunpowderPlod” provided me with email instructions, to meet up with him, his trusty dog “Dougal” and a Virgin Harriette - “Just L”, near the Tin Hau Temple in Sai Kung. Riding to the start, at the picturesque Tso Wo Hang Park, overlooking Sai Kung Harbor, and setting up drink coolers, it wasn’t long before the Hares “Hungary Cock Climber” and “Hassan” came in, after pre-laying the Rambo and Wimp trails. Note: At this point it’s probably appropriate to advise that usage of the term “Wimps Trail”, by the four various Hong Kong Hashes which I attended, in no way refers to a short flat easy going ya ya type trail. It’s mostly just somewhat shorter! I’m guessing the term “Rambo Trail” does however give you an accurate description of what you should expect in that case! Also, everyone knows Hong Kong Island itself is not flat, nor is much of the Kowloon mainland portion of Hong Kong.

Nash Hash 2017 Chengdu 52 Harrier

by Short Steep Shaft The All China Nash Hash has been happening every year since 2002, drawing Hashers from China and elsewhere to experience the rich culture of hashing in the Middle Kingdom. But there has always been a numeric discrepancy that this year will be addressed by having two Nash Hashes in one year. “Every year we have celebrated a Nash Hash in the year that was just one digit away (for example the 15th Nash Hash was celebrated in 2016)” explained Nash Hash GM John “Roomboy” Malins, “so this year we will have two Nash Hashes, thus bringing into alignment the number of Nash Hashes with the year it is held.

ardi Gras is the one occasion when civilians have a chance to dress silly, act foolishly and go to work - or not - with a slight hangover the day after. For us hashers every trail and circle provides such an opportunity.

I believe the only occurrence when a hash event piggybacked on a carnival this side of the pond was back in 2003 with Amsterdam H3 hosting in Maastricht.

R

Due to weather conditions the first quarter - which we call winter - is always light on hashing events in Europe. January traditionally sees Yorkshire H3 AGPU opening the season. This year it took place back at the Rendez Vous in Skipton, possibly the only hotel where you must check in with your hash name. February it’s time for a bit of sunshine with the Madrid H3 annual Javea weekend, now jointly disorganised with the recently established Costa Blanca H3. March offers the opportunity to downhill ski with Vindobona H3 or to cross-country ski with Oslo H3 unless you really wants to perform a naked snow angel before going down the hole in the ice with Helsinki H5.

Bad Dog by Jay Hopkins with Gerry “For Sale Or Rent” Kutz

Interview with Bad Dog: Reflections on 2500 runs with DC area hashes. On February 19, 2017, hasher Bill “Bad Dog” Severe marked his 2,500th run with Washington, DC area hashes. A crowd of 300 hashers were on hand not only to help celebrate the occasion, but to celebrate the life of a their beloved friend nearing the end of his fight with cancer. In this interview, Bad Dog looks back on 21 years, which is as much about his love for his friends as it is for the sport that has been his passion. Congratulations on 2,500 runs. What led you to hashing in the first place? Well, a friend of mine, “Number Two,” who runs with the local White House Hash, told me at a party that he had gotten into this activity known as “hashing.” And I’d read an article about hashing in USA Today a few years before, but this was in the preinternet era and you had to know the secret number to dial in order to know where the hash was, off a recording and all that stuff. A few months later, I’m driving up the street in Alexandria, Virginia, and I see a bunch of people running down the sidewalk and
