s e t o N ’s r o it d E Slated as the best “small” HHH event in 2016, Indochina Mekong Hash will be held 4-6 November in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This event is limited to 350 participants, a number that is purposely kept small enough for everyone to see old friends who return each year. Indochina Mekong Hash rotates among the countries along the mighty Mekong River. Last year the event was held in Myanmar (Burma), and IMH 2017 will be in Vientiane, Laos. If you are in Cha-Am (near Hua Hin, Thailand), you might want to light up the night at the Guy Fawkes Day Hash on the 5th of November. Be sure to check with the organizers to see if the event will be held, as many events in the Land of Smiles have been cancelled or postponed due to the recent passing of the King. More details come to light on the tragic death of a hasher at the International Hash Challenge last month. Could the death have been prevented, and what implications does this loss have for future events? The Aloha Hash House Harriers celebrated their 25th Anniversary with a

7-day cruise to four Hawaiian islands in a trip that will be long remembered by hashers who came from across the USA, and as far away as India, Malaysia,Thailand, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom to join the cruise. Read all about this amazing journey from Hazukashii, the founder of the Aloha H3. The first week of December may be the excuse you have been looking for to visit the Philippines. The Angeles City H3 celebrates its 2000th run 1-4 December AND the first Angeles City Craft Beer Festival will take place 2-4 December. Coincidence or just good timing for both events? Coming up in January, Harrier Magazine’s annual Best HHH

Events of the Year edition will be unveiled. 2017 looks to be a banner year for HHH events with Eurohash, Pan Asia Hash, InterAmerica’s Hash, and Pan Africa Hash. Nash Hashes are coming up in Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Borneo, Ireland, Thailand, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom. The Bali Hash 2 will celebrate 25 years of hashing on The Island of the Gods in January 2017. I look forward to seeing you on trail soon. Siem Reap:

Center of Asia’s Culture and History... And Sometimes Hashing. by Jimmy Wilkins

I

f you have never been to Siem Reap, this is a good time to go. The rains have mostly stopped, and it is not too hot. Expect temperatures of about 28-32 Celsius in the daytime.

The Indochina Mekong Hash will be here November 4-6, 2016. Big Boss Hanno has promised a great event with plenty of beer and exciting trails.

Siem Reap, a resort town in northwestern Cambodia, is the gateway to the ruins of Angkor, the seat of the Khmer kingdom from the 9th–15th centuries. Angkor’s vast complex of intricate stone buildings includes preserved Angkor Wat, the main temple, which is pictured on Cambodia’s flag. Giant, mysterious faces are carved into the Bayon Temple at Angkor Thom.

W

hen the Aloha H3 was founded back in 1991, none of us ever thought about how long it would last. But here we are, 25 years later, and wondering how we lasted 2 weeks of celebration. We started out with a few days of hashes on the island of Oahu with some prelube events, beginning with a Tuesday evening trail from the oldest, and original hash club in Hawaii . . . The Honolulu Hawaii Hash House Harriers, also known as the H5, was founded on 16 March 1978, and started from the Hee Hing Chop Suey shop in Kapahulu. The H5 traces its roots back to the Bangkok H3 in Thailand where Castel Myers had been working, and found the hash to be great fun. So, once he moved to Hawaii, all it took was to gather up some friends (Russ Hoylman, Hutch Hutchinson, Dave Benson, and Dick Hoyer) and a new era was born.

Bali Hash House Harriers 2 Celebrating 25 Years of Hashing In Paradise

by Serial Offender It’s going to be an AMAZING celebratory weekend in Bali Indonesia over the weekend of 27, 28 and 29 of January 2017. Check it out … • 25th Anniversary of Bali Hash 2 • The start of Victor “Nightjar” Mason’s 80th Year • First day of Chinese New Year The Origins of Hash in Bali In May 1977 Victor “Nightjar” Mason and several accomplices decided to get together once each Friday afternoon at the Beggars Bush in Ubud. There they would sit drinking beer while the Beggars Bush minions would trek out into the jungle with a bag of shredded paper and proceed to litter the countryside, laying a trail which our founding heroes would later follow; on foot and eventually hands and knees, becoming wet and muddy. Then returning to the comfort of the pub, where Nightjar, acting as some self-styled Religious Adviser, would shrive everyone in turn for such offences as getting lost in the jungle or daring to speak out of turn, by the forced drinking of huge mugs of Beer (punishment indeed for these heinous crimes). This tradition thrived and continues to this day. Excellent procreation skills meant the original accomplices multiplied and became so numerous that some went on to spawn other groups.

THE INTERNATIONAL HASH CHALLENGE: A PARTICIPANT’S PERSPECTIVE CONTENTS

M

uch has been said and written about the tragedy of Thomas J.F. Cools who, at 34 years-old, was one of the younger participants of the 9th IHC on September 17, 2016. However, some pertinent facts were misrepresented by the media. Here are the facts: - All the runners have no problems continuing after the layover at CP1, but at CP2, basically the half-way stage, 15 dropped out or were disqualified. Thomas and his team managed to scrap through by a whisker (5 min). - Some 700m into the sector, Thomas stopped to attend to blisters developing on his legs, and told his team-mates to continue on, and that he will catch up with them later. A separate team – Rapid Cripples, the most senior team and last to depart from CP2, overtook Thomas at this point and enquired about his situation, and he assured them he was alright. - Approximately between 2-3km from CP2, a resurgent Thomas overtook Team Rapid Cripples.

N

airobi, capital city of Kenya is home to several active hash groups with some hashers who are quite active on the international circuit. Last month Head Mistress flew down from Addis Ababa and joined them for one of the major yearly hashing events in East Africa, the Naivasha Relay and a regular Monday Hash. The Naivasha Relay involves a relay run from Nairobi to Naivasha on unsealed roads in teams of 9 with members seeded according to their running ability with the higher seeds running longer distances several times throughout the day and the lower seeds maybe doing a short run once. Different hashes from Kenya and international hashers particularly from Kampala, Uganda come together to make up teams and some teams have more than one group. Each team is distinctive by its individual t-shirts sporting its team names and teams travel in several vehicles or one big vehicle when not running. The relay is made up of a series of legs of different lengths for different seeds so around 30 runners run at one time.
