Editor’s Notes:

Editor/Publisher Jim Edens publisher@harriermagazine.com

Welcome to the October 2013 edition of Harrier Magazine. This month marks our eleventh year of publication since the magazine launched at Goa Interhash in October 2002 as Asia-Pacific Harrier. Our global content as the world HHH publication is reflected in our current masthead Harrier Magazine (although some old timers still refer to us as Harrier International, which ceased publication in 1998 with the passing of Tim Hughes). The magazine over the last six years has been a collaborative effort between our many contributors, our advertisers, our designer Jimmy Wilkins, our customer service guru Lisa Sukita and myself as Editor-in-Chief. These years have been an uncharted journey on roads full of ups and downs, but the mission has always been to make each magazine better than the preceding editions. This challenge remains as our guiding beacon each month. The support of our readers has made the challenge worthwhile over the bright and difficult times. We encourage our readers to view the digital edition of Harrier Magazine online each month, as our print edition contains only 20% of our content each quarter. Digital Edition only subscribers now make up over 50% of our readers, while print subscribers also have access to our monthly digital editions and quarterly digital supplements online. Some exceptional regional events were the highlights of 2013 at Pan Africa Hash, InterAmericas Hash in Panama, EuroHash in three Scandinavian countries, and at the disastrous Pan Asia Hash in Pattaya, Thailand. The final quarter of 2013 features scores of upcoming events in each region. Our January 2014 edition will feature our picks as the best events in what looks to be a banner year for hashing around the world. next year. The Harrier Magazine Team looks forward to seeing you on trail in the months and years to come. On-On, Jim Edens, Editor-in-Chief Harrier Magazine - Fun on the run since 2002 International Edition with readers all over the world www.HarrierMagazine.com

RAMBLING & HASHING THROUGH EUROPE by Julie Burgess

Pre and Post Lubes to Brussels 2014, A Beer Odyssey

Brussels 2014, A Beer Odyssey is not entirely a Belgian or a Higgins event, it is a European event. Hash chapters from around Europe are preparing to welcome hash visitors. Experience the cultural diversity of Europe with a minimal amount of travel time. Each chapter and country has its own flavour. In many cases, the Rambles will go off the beaten path, so one has the unique opportunity to explore parts of Europe that only the locals know. Links for all Rambles can be found on www.brussels2014.net, Pre & Post Rambles.

16-18 July & continuing on 21-23 July: GoNAD Beer University Bus Tour from Hell V Experience Belgium off the beaten path, see the beautiful Architecture and countryside and taste the fabulous beer. The tour will spend 3 days touring the historical and charming Flemish Cities of Gent, Leuven and Ypres, and breweries including Westvleteren and Kasteel. After a weekend break to catch one’s breath, the tour will resume and venture on to Wallonia for quaint villages, gorgeous countryside and breweries, including Silly and Du Bocq. 17-20 July: 2014 Glasgow Commie Hash Weekend In 2014 Glasgow will host the 20th Commonwealth Games, and as is tradition, Glasgow H3 will host the Commie Hash on 17-20 July 2014. The event is centered in the city of Glasgow; the gateway to the Scottish Highlands, so the runs are guaranteed to be very scenic. The main venue for the weekend is the newly refurbished Glasgow Youth Hostel, located in the Park District of the City Centre. All rooms are en-suite, mainly comprising of 4 and 6 beds. The event will officially open on the Thursday with the Charity Red Dress Run. On Friday there is a reception and pub crawl. Participants will have the opportunity to try unusual whiskies and

splendid real ales. After the trail, one can party at the venue or walk 300 yards to one of Glasgow’s nightclubs, supplying ample opportunity to deepen the Glasgow gene puddle. On Saturday, the hash will to head into the highlands for a day of trails and post trail festivities. At night, a Ceilidh (local word for party) will be held. The theme is of course Highland Dress. And, if the weekend is not enough, there are a few great warm up events: 14 July: Glasgow H3 15 July: DAFT in Sirling 16 July: TNT H3 in Edinburgh, Special Castle and old Town Trail 17 July: Lunch & Whisky Tasting There are three international airports within an hour of the city and two main lines rail links to London. During the Commonwealth Games, trains are subsidized by the government, and hashers can buy cheap train tickets, including sleeper trains, or plane tickets to London from £30 ($45). Remember, it is important to book early for the best rates. 18-20 July: Swiss Nash Hash The 2014 edition of the Swiss Nash Hash will be hosted by Zurich H3 in the medieval village of Saint-Ursanne. The run is guaranteed to be picturesque, and the wine will be flowing.

his October the Las Vegas Red Dress Run will host it’s 10th annual event amidst a number of new challenges. Last year the Las Vegas Red Dress Run hosted their most successful event to date, donating $8,000 to local charity, Safe Nest. Over the past five years Safe Nest has been the charity of choice for the Las Vegas Red Dress Run. They operate the only 24-hour emergency shelters in the city for battered women and children, and is the oldest and largest domestic violence program in Southern Nevada, offering not only shelter but also counseling. In similar fashion to recent years the Red Dress weekend will kick off on Friday night with a Halloween costume ball. Prizes will be awarded for the best group, scariest, sexiest, and most original costumes. Last year a group of hashers from the Portland, Oregon took the prize for best group after arriving in mass as garden gnomes. They really set the bar high, so it’ll be great to see which kennel can take the prize this year. Switching things up a bit, The Hash Band will be

playing Friday night for the costume ball rather than the evening of the Red Dress Run and The Painted Toes will play the following night. While the popularity of the Las Vegas Red Dress Run has been rapidly growing since 2003, organizer Adios Motherfucker is concerned about attendance this year. “We’re competing against a big music festival being held in the same area of town over the same dates. The hotel room situation has been difficult because knowing rooms can be sold for a premium, the hash hotel won’t extend our room block or room rate as they always have in years past. The other nearby hotels won’t work with us either,” says Adios. Rooms are still available at most Fremont Street area hotels, but rates are inflated due to the festival and is the root of Adios’ fears on low attendance. Another challenge for the Las Vegas Red Dress Run this year will be the trail. “There’s an event going on in the space next to our venue right when we’re doing check-in for the Red Dress Run,

he InterAmerica’s in 2013 was to be a celebration of 30 years of continuous Hashing in Panama. However, the registration holders of the 2013 InterAmerica’s Hash were starting to worry. For the first 15 of 20 months since Panama won the bid there was little communication from the Panama Hash. Mostly, there was a language barrier. Secondly, it was not possible to book a venue more than one year in advance, so there was nothing really to tell. When the hotel was finally confirmed, the hotel wanted a copy of a credit card, a passport and a signature all in one fax. Not wanting to give one’s identity away via the fax machine, even the seasoned travelers waited for a better option.
