“… It’s a long, long while From May to December But the days grow short, When you reach September.” …. September Song by Kurt Weill Autumn each year, like the autumn of our lives is a reminder to cherish and celebrate each passing day. Make this a September to remember with a bountiful harvest of trails and tales to keep you warm on those long winter nights. In this edition we fondly remember Pat “Plastic Paddy” Sweeney, a friend and hashman extraordinaire, who accomplished what most of us can barely imagine in our wildest dreams. Celebrate Japanese culture with gushing geishas galore as the notorious Hell Kitty Tour returns to the Land of the Rising Sun. From Tokyo International take the first Full Moon flight to Transylvania for a frightful Halloween night in the shadows of Count Dracula’s castle. Dress to impress on the train from Bucharest to Transylvania where unlimited supply of Ursus Beer will quench your thirst while vampires arise from their coffins. Brew News: What is a German brew meister doing in the fabulous Philippines? Michael Schittek brews German style craft beer at Pinatubo Brewery in Angeles City, Pampanga. Ten German style brews are on tap, along with authentic German food. Stop by for a liter or two. My favorite is “Dark Angel”, a dark colored lager with 5.6% ABV and an IBU rating of 20, reasonably priced at 80 Philippine Pesos for a 500 ml glass.

Off to the Peruvian Amazon to hash with the piranhas in Lima, Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Dangling your arms and legs off the side of the boat is highly discouraged when the piranhas are hungry. Hash in the Holy Land where Israelis and Palestinians agree that beer can help make anything better. Continue your pilgrimage deep into the Dark Continent, where Head Mistress meets up with hashers from Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia for the Jinja Relay. Run for fun and dance the night away at this unique event. Add fiber to your hash diet when Hash Boy introduces the Shiggy Bar to keep you regular. Sir Malibog reveals the depths of his depravity, his offbeat wit, and tedious twaddle in this edition of the Stockholm Absolut Hash Trash. Read it at your own risk. Happy trails, Jim Edens, Publisher Harrier Magazine International Edition www.HarrierMagazine.com

ounded in Hong Kong in February 1995 by ex Taiwan Hashers, the Free China Hash House Harriers has always had a penchant for away runs. In the early days, the focus was on exploring China, including the first several Hashes in Guilin, and returning to Taiwan (aka Free China) to run with their mother Hash. By the late 1990s the Free China Hash had a significant coterie of ‘Tamagotchis’ running regularly, together with a lot of wanna be partners in sleaze. An intrepid band of them, led by Emergency Services, Catch of the Day, Amah Moron and Coral Cock came up with the idea of bringing the Free China Hash to Japan to experience its many pleasures.

BREW NEWS

Pinatubo Craft Beer

CONTENTS

by Dion Greg Reyes pics supplied by Pinatubo

E

ngineers love to drink beer. Done mostly after taking exams or any important college milestone to celebrate about – heck, sometimes just casually – this not-so-healthy habit is a universal thing in engineering, regardless if you are a student or a professional. There is just a special relationship between engineers and beer. But there are few who take this relationship to a whole new level. While many of us order and drink beers at clubs or convenience stores, some engineers make them. For a living. One of these engineers is Michael Schittek, a German specializing in chemical engineering who is now based in Angeles City, Pampanga in the Philippines. He is making craft beer through his own brewery called the Pinatubo Craft Brewery. Pinatubo Craft Beer is so called because Mt. Pinatubo, one of the most destructive volcanoes in the Philippines, sits in Pampanga along with nearby provinces Zambales and Tarlac. Located at the Friendship area in Angeles City, Schittek’s beer place offers the signature Pinatubo Craft Beer as well as authentic German dishes. All raw-materials are imported from Germany, equipment needed to handcraft his beer are Filipino made but of German knowledge. That includes the stainless-steel vats manufactured in nearby Mabalacat City. He started brewing in the area in 2015 just as he thought of retiring in the Philippines, putting up the first and only craft beer brewery in the province. This decision came after he and his wife Mildred, together with their 5-year-old son, lived in Switzerland for years. Now they are living in Pampanga.

Thinking Fondly of my mate Paddy by Peter Benware

Y

ou don’t have to know someone your whole life to become best mates. It was only six years ago I connected with Paddy through our mutual love of hashing and bicycling in Asia.

CONTENTS

I first met him in 2011 in Vientiane, Laos. Popeye and I had been cycling around North Vietnam. By chance we met a Canadian in the pub at the end of a day’s ride. He was on his way to a Hash run. We followed him across the road to “Tapeworms Joint”, to catch a ride to the run site. That’s where I first met Closet Screamer, who told us her husband Paddy was also a cyclist. He’d ridden solo to Luang Prabang to the Mekong Hash and was at the moment at the run site. Yep...Paddy was already on the squirt!! After I met him that day...we created a bond that has lasted for six years of touring together. I saw him again in 2012 at a Hash event in Hanoi. He’d pedaled there from the south of Vietnam. I told him if he was planning a trip next year...”I’m in!” So we kept in contact between New York and Perth, Australia by email. In 2013 we met in Vientiane, Laos to cycle along the Mekong north to the China 44 Harrier

Running the Jinja Relay with Kampala H3

CONTENTS

by Julia Stanton

T

he t-shirt said Run, Drink, Dance, Ride, Repeat for 89.5km......But If you remember what happened on the Jinja Relay you were never there....

The Kampala to Jinja Relay is one of the biggest annual events on the African hash calendar organised by Kampala Hash House Harriers in Uganda. Julia Stanton aka Head Mistress decided to check out what it was all about so this is an attempt to remember how I ran, danced, drank, rode for 89.5km from Kampala to Jinja.

The day started early as the aim was to reach the start point on the edge of Kampala by 6am. Hashers compete in teams of at least 9 people who are seeded from 1 to 9 in terms of running ability or lack of it. Most teams have a lot more members than this and my team, Team mix was made up of around 17 members. Team mix because members are a mix of hashers from Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia but the Ugandan members do all the organising. The team did not get off to a good start as one team member couldn’t be woken 76 Harrier
