Editor’s Welcome

CONTENTS

to the September 2012 monthly digital edition of Harrier Magazine

Greetings to all our readers and welcome to the second edition of Harrier Magazine’s new monthly digital edition. For those subscribers who were a bit too busy to log on to the August digital edition, you can do so at any time, and I encourage you to do so. The August and September digital editions contain over 140 pages of content not found in our quarterly print edition. Over the last month I have been in one of the most active Hash Hubs on the planet. San Diego, California is home to some 18 HHH clubs, which run from once a month, as is the case of the San Diego Full Moon Hash, to twice a week. Diid you know that the Full Moon Hash, as well as the Original Red Dress Run, and the Pick-Up Hash started right here in San Diego, decades ago and then spread around the globe? This edition features a cornucopia of HHH and running tales from around world from the DivaHHH in Europe, to the the Tuff Liver Hash in the USA, and the annual Angkor Wat 1/2 Marathon

in Siem Reap, Cambodia. How about the Beer Mile, or a secret HHH chapter at a “dry” college campus on the East coast of the USA? There is something of interest to almost anyone in the monthly digital editions. Hashing and running are indeed alive and well around the planet. For our more cerebral readers, “Whither Interhash 2012” is a topic to ponder, as is a nostalgic look back at when the World Hash Directory was printed on paper instead of a digital directory as was the case at the last Interhash. Planning your next hash holiday? How about *80 Days Hashing Around the World” or one of the other 50 or so HHH and running events in this publication that are coming up soon. Please remember to send us your stories, photos and news of your upcoming events. Harrier Magazine is the only monthly world HHH publication, so news from your corner of the globe is always welcome!

I hope to see you on trail soon, Jim “Bimbo” Edens, Editor-in-Chief Harrier Magazine - Fun on the run since 2002 International Edition with readers in 120 countries www.HarrierMagazine.com

Letters Dear Editor, Praise for the

WORLD HASH

DIRECTORY

CONTENTS

I

n one of the more sober moments on the way to Jogjakarta for my ninth Interhash, I was reminded of the tremendous value of having a copy of The Hash Directory. Approached by an obviously sceptical fellow, questioning my slightly politically incorrect hash t-shirt, I was able to convince him of the Hash’s world-wide connections only by showing him a Hash Directory. So impressed was he that he parted clutching a slip of paper with a note of his nearest hash, although I doubt Mount Vernon HHH will thank me. Which brings me to the great advantage of travelling with a Hash Directory. The details listed have been provided by a network of regional hash websites who freely publish details about hashing for various areas that cover the entire world. These websites are maintained by hash volunteers who hash in respective regions and, therefore, are able to share local hashing knowledge. This can be invaluable when you are in desperate need of some congenial hashing company and a beer or three. The rapid growth in the use of the internet has been a boon for the hashing community but there are many times when that technology is not available or not working and it is much quicker to look up a Hash location. The Directory is a powerful weapon for hashing – I once used its information to persuade a yacht’s captain to change course and head for Ascension Island on an Atlantic crossing, but I think he was more interested in the drinking than the running! Many thanks and beers to the many hashers who provide the updates and even more down-downs to those who make the Directory happen. GATES THE GODFATHER WESSEX HASH HOUSE HARRIERS - UK

WHITHER INTERHASH 2012?

another rant by Frank “Whorator” Benfield

I

t is the purpose of this paper to argue for the establishment of a form of InterHash council to provide responsible, principled guidance for InterHash committees to correct the current parlous even dysfunctional state of some InterHash f u n c t i o n a l and financial management.

CONTENTS

In its July–September 2010 edition, Harrier Magazine published evidence and justification that the management of Kuching InterHash 2010 (Kuching IH2010) had for some time been dysfunctional

- click on the July-September edition).

Leading up to the recent Borobudur InterHash 2012 (Borobudur IH2012), the consequences of that dysfunction came into sharp focus when Kuching IH2010 failed to comply with requests to provide the InterHash Start-Up Fund of US$25,000.00 properly transferred to it by Perth InterHash 2008. Awareness of this financial malfeasance by Kuching IH2010 is now widespread within the InterHash community and sadly that is now THE legacy of Kuching IH2010. But that 14 HARRIER

is not the end of the matter for according to Kuching IH2010’s Treasurer, Kuching IH2010 retained almost MR600,000.00 including the Start-Up Fund in its bank accounts. On 23 May 2012, Kuching IH2010 finally remitted US$24,970.00 comprising the Start-Up Fund less unpaid bank fees to Borobudur IH2012 after the situation was revealed to the InterHash community by Borobudur IH2012.

In the order of this distribution of profits, readers will see the priorities of Hainan IH2014. One wonders at the justification for funding the troubled Malaysian-based Hash Heritage Foundation. However, review of the organisers listed provides the explanation in the links to Malaysia. If (Hainan IH2014 Chair) Mahai, who has personal links with Malaysia, had only InterHash priorities he and his organisers would first limit the registration costs of HIH14.

! S E Y

There is nothing positive in this malfeasance by Kuching IH2010. But the situation does highlight the parlous state of some InterHash management. InterHash now presents an opportunity for rampant commercialism and individual and Club enrichment. Additionally, charity donations are outrageously excessive and designed to enhance the standing of Hashers in non-Hash communities. Examples of such outcomes also exist in the management of InterHashes in KL Therefore, it is once more time to ask IH1998 and Goa IH2002. the question: Is it necessary to form an Sadly, Hainan InterHash 2014 (Hainan InterHash council to provide responsible, guidance to InterHash IH2014) has adopted a similar principled

committees? The answer to a similar question asked in the Harrier Magazine July–September 2010 edition remains the only answer: YES! Such an InterHash institution (title to be decided) can identify and define the components and parameters of an InterHash. There is no shortage of eminent InterHashers with great business knowledge, skills and management experience who could fulfill the responsibilities inherent in any such InterHash institution. Efficient use of modern internet facilities would enable such an InterHash Institution to operate across InterHashdom without the cost of regular face-to-face meetings. Prior to Borobudur IH2012, a gathering of eminent InterHashers considered this issue as an informal InterHash Advisory

Group (IAG). Such meetings and considerations are not novel but unfortunately plans formulated in the past have never been implemented.

CONTENTS CONTENTS

The recent financial malfeasance of Kuching IH2010 provides justification, opportunity and motivation for the InterHash community to support the formation of an InterHash institution of the kind envisaged by the IAG. Now is the time for the InterHash community to unite, as it does at every InterHash and support the development of an InterHash institution with terms of reference enabling it: (i) to define the limitations & parameters of InterHash; and (ii) to provide the necessary management and financial direction and guidance to InterHash host management committees. Of course, there is much more detail to initiate, develop and implement concerning the InterHash institution, but the IAG should be given time and be empowered to do just that. This opinion piece has set out the justification for the establishment of an institution to provide responsible, principled guidance for InterHash committees to correct the current parlous even dysfunctional state of some InterHash functional and financial management. It is time for the InterHash community to support the IAG as it works towards the creation of this InterHash institution. NOW is the time to bring such a concept to fruition and in the process answer the question: Whither InterHash 2012? On on forever Frank “Whorator Benfield Mooloolaba H3 Qld

TUFF LIVER by Sean Gilmour

he El Lay Metro Hash hosted their annual event on the first Saturday in June in Gardena, California. Almost every year since 2002, they have laid a trail containing four distinct elements. First, the starting time is early afternoon and trail lasts several hours. Secondly, there is at least one ride on a Los Angeles Metro train. Third, the pack must visit at least one dive bar. Lastly, as much of the trail as possible is laid through neighborhoods described as ‘a little slice of life.’

20 HARRIER

This year’s event, known as Tuff Livver, was spawn from improvisation due to the rebuilding of Los Angeles Metro’s transit system. In the past, the EL Lay Metro Hash has run events such as the ‘Running of the Bullshit’, the ‘Trihashathon’, and the ‘Rerunning of the Bullshit.’ Runs are purposely held where the area’s demographics can almost guarantee gawkers and spectator participation. This year the Metro’s Expo Line wasn’t quite ready for a traditional El Lay Metro trail, so Tuff Livver was born.

So why did the ELMH choose to spoof on Tough Mudder, a race-ist series of obstacle runs growing popularity with hashers and mortals alike? The answer appears to be that the ELMH feel that the Tough Mudder tagline, “probably the toughest event on the planet” is laughable and that their idea of an obstacle course trail completed by teams with no emphasis on finish times is far from unique. Tuff Livver did however

embrace one aspect of Tough Mudder, and encouraged participants to arrive in costume themed teams. Tuff Livver participants were led by the ELMH hares, Damian the AntiChrist, Detachable Penis, Hard in the Saddle, and Sin D Bear, on a 7 mile trail with 9 alcohol related “Challenge Checks.” The whole ordeal was promised to last 5 hours, with

no more than a mile between challenges. Some of the challenges were dubbed the “Mad Dog Dunk”, “Hit Me With Your Best Snot”, “Chug & Chew”, and “Fire and Ice – Ice.” As hashers arrived at each of the challenges they were placed in groups of 3 to perform the challenges. In order to ensure everyone had ample time to mock each other, the pack was held from continuing trail until the vast majority of the pack had finished the challenge. Overall, Tuff Livver lived up to their selfcreated credo, “We overcome all beers! Shots! Wine!” The 112 attendees consumed 40 cases of beer, and 6 gallons of liquor, obliterating previous ELMH stats! Trail ended with the usual down-downs and a bilious green themed barbeque.

A good introduction may be the Wikipedia article that is written about Earlham, where the hash has its own section. It reads: “Earlham has the only student-run Hash House Harriers running group, founded in 1989 and still continuing at present (2012). [It] has been described by visitors as the “Galapagos of Hashes” for the creativity and development of hashing practices. Open to all students who wish to inundate themselves on Earlham’s dry campus, the ECH3 (Earlham College Hash House Harriers) is an inclusive and musical bunch who uphold Quaker values. The Hash run takes place on the ‘back campus,’ which may include the back property of the neighboring cemetery, during all seasons.”

You may ask about the unique practices that qualify us as the “Galapagos of hashes,” and there are a lot of them. One primary characteristic is that we are not a running group that drinks. Instead, as described by an old GM and good friend, THC, “We go back campus, drink beer, and sing dirty songs… It’s more than that. We’re a drinking club, with a running problem.” The conclusion that I draw from this despicably delicately worded description is that we are Earlham College’s replacement for fraternities and sororities. However, unlike Greek life, instead of being a bunch of roided pricks, we are worthless pisspots, a title that we happily embrace.

that are less than 4 words. Personally, I am “Nosy Cuddling Camper (*Yawn).” Our GM’s for next year are “Help Me, Vomiting Shoes,” “Lube Up My Dick in Church, Bro!” and “Christian Kicked the Hipster Gypsy.” Some other interesting names are “Mama’s Yeast, Philosophy Beast,” “Viking Dictator Searches for Porn on the Refrigerator, Hallelujah,” and “The Delinquent Defiled the Dragon’s Dick,” the latter of whom was my roommate this last year.

Our trails are also slightly different than others. Since we are primarily a drinking institution, we prefer drinking over running, which has led us to disregard running, unless it is a live trail, where the GM’s set We don’t f*ck around with names either. the trail while we are on it (in this situation, Many a hash has 2 or 3 word names, but if you catch up with the GM’s you earn our hash had to be a little more creative. yourself a free shooter or some exotic We don’t give names (with rare exception) alcohol). Instead of running, we casually

meander our way through the thicket of trees that comprise “back campus,” a forest behind the primary campus, to the side of Clear Creek, where we proceed to get plastered. The last issue that I would like to address is our drinking procedure, which is, obviously, an integral part of the experience. Instead of drinking to our sins, we have concluded that sins are not enough to drink to, so, instead, we make “calls,” which range from “if you had sex last night, get in the water,” to “if you have not smoked weed today, get in the fucking water!” Only people with names are aloud to make calls and the call cannot include the person making it. Also, something that stands out about our drinking is that we do not drink a petty glass

of beer because a glass is terribly small. Instead we must drink a full can of beer. By the end of a hash, few members leave with less than seven delicious, mouthwatering beer beverages having been pumped down their respective esophagus. The last mandatory statement is that, since we are our own hash, we have our own hash anthem. It goes as follows: “We are the Earlham hashers/We’re happy to be here/We’ll short cut all your trails/And then we’ll drink your beer/We’ll fuck all your women/We’ll puke in your car/Cause we’re the Earlham hashers/And we’re the best by far!” Good night and hearty imbibing to all!

The last leg of the journey will lead back to Frankfurt, where the tour started roughly 80 days prior. The trip will include all transport from Frankfurt on until the end of the trip (business class flights, VIP bus, standard and first class trains), all accommodation (while this means mixed types of accommodation, the idea is to stay on the luxurious side, so youth hostels will be avoided if at all possible), full board (depending on the possibilities), sightseeing and entry fees, transfers, goody bags and surprises, and of course hash run fees as well as the all important beer to keep everyone going. Only 20 people will be lucky enough to be able to go on this trip. If you would like to participate in only part of the trip, however, there are five possibilities to join the group along the way. There is the 2-week bus tour through Europe in the beginning of the trip or the “Silk-Road-Train” tour, which would take about 12 days. Alternatively, you could also sign up for the “America” tour, leading from the US around South America and back to the US, the “Asia” tour, which would last about 15 days or the last part of the trip, “Europe South”. common themed non-hashing activity, called a Beer Mile, is growing popularity amongst the hashing community. The earliest documentation of the beer mile can be traced baco to the late 1980’s. More information and a humorous list of beer mile variations can be found at http://www.beermile.com. The activity is simplistic; the participant consumes a 12oz beer, runs a quarter mile, and repeats the process until a distance of one mile is achieved. Each participant of the event is timed, and the shortest time wins. According to the website the fastest completion is four minutes six seconds, which clearly was not awarded to the oldest beer mile participant, a 78 year old from Kokanee, Canada.

In Las Vegas, Nevada on June 16, 2012 it was damned hot. The dry heat peaked at 104 Fahrenheit. In true blue form, 24 hung-over hashers started trickling in with astounding punctuality. The spectators and volunteers who didn’t yet know they were volunteers were assigned their tasks. The old hats and regulars were all very excited as there were many new faces as well as visitors from different states and countries. Four cones were set 330 feet apart on a course that totaled a 1,320-foot loop. Multiply that by four laps and you get the standard 5,280 feet

needed for a mile. Some mathematicians in the group didn›t like the look of the course, they decided to get out the distance calculator and take a lap, and the course was spot on. The beer was ice cold, the runners vomit box was filled with kitty litter where participants could “unleash the beast”. The course was set; it was time for beer mile! Three heats of seven runners each were identified, the first of which stood ready. Four beers plus four laps equals foam puffing out of you like the Hsaw Aknow (those of you who don›t get the reference, I recommend you watch

the original «Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory»). After the first heat, the sight of the three-way vomit shared by Alcoholiday, Put It In My Mouth Please, and Tikol Mie AnilHole was met with cheers, sneers and urges to hold down what you may have had in your own stomach. In her most lady-like fashion, Red Solo Cunt became the poster child for the next Beer Mile as a glorious golden glob started flowing from her mouth into the kitty litter.

Once all three heats had finished the group circled for down-downs after the Unofficial 2nd Anal Las Vegas Beer Mile. The front running bastard was Alcoholiday with a very fast 9 minutes 48 seconds, the DFL was Just Whitney with an astounding 50 minutes 31 seconds. Chief Shitting Bull received honorable mention for the grossest vomit. A good time was had by all and the group left with one suggestion; do this again in cooler weather!

Still an active mining town, Randsburg has starred in a number of movies including the 1991 cult classic “Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town.” Arriving early, some hashers checked out the town’s antique shops, museum, and had breakfast at the General Store. On this trip, time did not permit a visit to the local Indian Wells Brewing Company, about 20 minutes away. However, pints of the brewery’s Mojave Red were available at the White House Saloon and Floozy House. Some hashers stayed the weekend at cottages available through the Cottage

here there be dragons…This is the Year of the Dragon, which according to Chinese mythology will be the year of strength. My enhanced perceptive powers in recent weeks have also led me to notice a few other ice-worthy incidents, particularly here in Asia, notably the following.

Hashmen concerned about their downdown-induced beer guts might look at the possibilities for a lithe physique offered by the bold weight-loss program at the “Life of Life Healing Spa” in Hong Kong which We’ve all been there (or at least I have) involves setting fire briefly to the parts of but it fills me with good feelings to see it the body holding the most fat. the ready in case of problems). Chu said about 100 clients have undergone the treatment, with no complications (Does she mean other than being on fire?). Chu said the treatment is based on traditional Chinese medicine, but a Hong Kong doctor interviewed by Agence FrancePresse said, ‘’I have never heard of such a thing.” This is clearly a case of “Don’t try this at home” although, in my present state, the alcohol rubdowns sound OK. I know chameleons can absorb liquid through skins, can hashers? Also, in news recently to hand, I note the results of recent research of much import to hashmen worldwide. Scientists at Syracuse University, recently describing for a British journal their study of the body measurements of bats, found an inverse size relationship between a male bat’s brain and his testicles. The researchers hypothesized that both sperm and brains are metabolically costly to produce, and in species with relatively stable monogamous relationships, brains are allowed to grow, but where females are promiscuous, males that do not overdevelop testicles get left out of the race to procreate. Let us ponder that for a moment. Done? OK, lets move on. At first glance, the results of the research appear to confirm old cliches touted by harriettes on numerous occasions. But, a more sophisticated analysis seems obvious, to wit, a tendency to monogamous relationships obviates the need for any gonads. Recourse to considering my married male hash friends leads to his appearing to be at least anecdotally true.

Secondly, if women perceive there to be such an inverse relationship between brains and balls then it behooves the astute hashman to conceal his native intelligence behind a facade of stupidity until he has secured the object of his affections and has her in a situation where any revelation of his inadequacy (so to speak) will be • too little, too late” (again, so to speak). Naturally, what is most likely to aid in such deceptions? Surely this is why alcohol was invented in the first place! Why am I wasting my time not drinking? Roll on the end of this self-imposed exile from hashmen gathered around the keg at the end of every run and we’ll be snapping up any new female talent that appears. If the cautionary aspects of the information above do not dissuade any hashmen reading this article from following my absurd, temporary tilt at abstention (intended only to be from drink, it clearly leads to something of a ‘dry spell” in other areas as well) let me close with some sage words from William James, which perhaps might look well emblazoned on a hash shirt, “Sobriety diminishes, discriminates, and says no; Drunkenness expands, unites, and says yes. Not through mere perversity do men run after it..” Remember to quote that at your next hash. You might not get laid but a fellow piss artist might buy you a drink. On On to oblivion..

First exposed to Hashing in 1973 at Lae, PNG, Whorator developed a great fondness for InterHashing and has attended each InterHash with the exception of Goa and Cardiff and contributed to the mismanagement of many of those InterHashes. Whorator now lives and Hashes twice weekly in Brisbane, Australia with regular Hashing excursions to Indonesia and Thailand. Whorator has completed in excess of two thousand Hash runs. Since 1986, Whorator has critically examined the future of InterHash and written frequently in a wide range of media on the topic. Dismayed with the state of InterHash by 2009, Whorator decided to take no further part in the proceedings.

. Nosy Cuddling Camper (*Yawn). College Town Hashing p. 30 My name, as far as any of you need to be concerned, is Nosy Cuddling Camper (*Yawn). I am 19 years old, grew up in Eugene, Oregon, USA, and am currently attending Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, USA. I believe that deciding on a major prior to the required date is silly so I haven’t yet chosen one. I have hashed at Earlham College and in Vientiane, Laos but I am hoping to expand my hash repertoire.

Sean Gilmore Tuff Liver p. 20 Sean Gilmour started hashing with the Las Vegas HHH, Viva Las Vegas, in 2008. He has served as the GM of the LVH3, and resur-erected the Sin City HHH with Updrunk’d the Junkie in 2009. He currently serves as tyrant of the SCH3, and has organized the Las Vegas Red Dress Run for the past three years.
