When I first began

implementing the concepts of comprehensive dentistry taught at The Dawson Academy, one of my biggest challenges was finding a dental lab which understood these concepts. I struggled for a while until I found Bay View. For the last twelve years Bay View has been my dental lab. It makes my job easier when both the lab and myself are on the same page. From the 3D wax-up and smile imaging, to predictable definitive restorations of all disciplines, I have found Bay View to be my partner in providing my patients with the best dentistry I can accomplish.

are important to us, and none are more so than our relationship with The Dawson Academy. For over thirty years, we have been a long-time friends with Dr. Peter Dawson and the Dawson Family. Co-owner of Bay View Dental Lab, Buddy Shafer, CDT, has been with the Dawson faculty for almost twenty years. Proudly, our beautiful new southeastern Virginia location is the flagship facility for the entire TDA curriculum of hands-on courses. Our good friend, Dr. John C. Cranham, Clinical Director of The Dawson Academy, also practices here in the same building with us.

Bigger is not always better when it comes to quality control and comprehensive restorative dentistry. Many labs band together today in groups to share marketing expense and increase buying power; focusing more on sales than quality and consistency. Bay View is a full-service lab with just one location. We do not outsource work to India, China, or any other foreign country, or spread our work out to satellite locations. We are honored to be a part of The Dawson Accredited Lab Association and service most of the Dawson Academy faculty as clients.

I have had the pleasure of working closely

with Bay View Dental Lab for the last twenty-two years. They have become my primary partner in solving complex functional-esthetic problems, utilizing the protocols of the Dawson Philosophy. I cannot recommend them highly enough, to any Doctor who wants to take their Dentistry to the next level.

John C. Cranham DDS

Dr. Dawson and Dr. Cranham with his BVDL team.

Our team is here, on site, and we do our best every day to work together for our customers. All of our technicians have been through the Dawson curriculum and most are board certified. We do not share our experienced technicians between multiple sites or with different “levels of quality or service. In fact, at Bay View, you will have the opportunity to choose and work with the ceramist of your choice and have the same technician continue with all of your cases. This allows the ceramist to become familiar with your preferences and ultimately create more consistency and quality control.

I have been fortunate to team with Bay View over the past two decades on many cases. They have helped me to provide truly exceptional results for my patients. BVDL shares the same vision of excellence and commitment to the final product as I do. They are one of only a hand full of the labs in the country that embrace the Dawson Philosophy of Complete Dentistry and have a ceramist that is Accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry

Serving The Dawson Academy doctors. For almost thirty years, our passion has been in support of The Dawson Academy doctors. We realized early on that this was a different, but more predictable and successful way to practice dentistry. More work goes into the diagnostic records and case work-up process, but the difference in results is worth it. We spend more time evaluating and screening work in order to identify and address problems early on. From general dentistry to complex implant/removable cases, Bay View has the knowledge and experience to support your practice. As an additional benefit, Bay View customers are also offered free staff training. There are many other benefits for our clients, so we invite you to visit with us this week.

are still the same. The lost wax technique has

Full contour high translucency IPS e.max Recent studies have shown full contour monolithic IPS e.max to be one of the strongest restorations in dentistry. It is also very esthetic. These restorations are ideal for premolars where esthetics are more visible. Since this material is very translucent, it is contra-indicated when the underlying prep is very dark and discolored. Best results are with a modified shoulder bur (Komet #6847KR) for margins and 3M RelyX Unicem2 resin material for cementation.

given way to direct metal laser sintering for metal copings with perfect margins. It’s more accurate and less costly. Lithium disilicate is now the new standard for all-ceramic restorations, and CAD/CAM designed zirconia full crowns have become the new “white gold” restoration. These exciting developments are revolutionizing laboratory technology and we are keeping up with the fast pace of change. The 75 year history of our family business was built on general restorative dentistry and we are very proud to continue that tradition by adding to our successful series of affordable restorations utilizing the newest in technology. These monolithic posterior restorations are guaranteed with a two week turn-around*. Specific details for each type of restoration are provided to the right. * Two weeks from the day we receive the case.

Zirconia frame with GC Initial porcelain This is an exciting new ceramic material with beautiful fluorescence and opalescence, layered over our own CAD/CAM designed zirconia frames. Layered zirconia restorations have shown a lower failure and fracture rate than metal-ceramics or IPS e.max. The esthetics are exceptional and with the added strength of a zirconia frame, restorations can easily be cemented. These are excellent restorations for any posterior units, and particularly for small bridges and splinted units. The zirconia frame will also block out a dark or discolored prep. Best results are with a modified shoulder bur (Komet #6847KR) for margins and 3M RelyX Unicem2 resin material for cementation. Noble metal frame with GC Initial porcelain An exciting and high-tech upgrade to traditional metal-ceramics. These restorations feature an amazing new technology called direct metal laser sintering to create the metal copings. The frame is then opaqued and layered with the special Initial IQ porcelain just like the zirconia frames. These restorations are indicated anywhere traditional metal ceramics are preferred and may be conventionally cemented. Best results are with a modified shoulder bur (Komet #6847KR) for margins and 3M RelyX Unicem2 resin material for cementation. Full contour zirconia restorations These restorations provide the strongest and most fracture resistant tooth colored material available in dentistry today. Because of the reduced translucency and esthetics, we recommend these restorations for molars only. They will appear more opaque than other options. However, when a full-cast gold crown is contra-indicated due to cost or color, this is an excellent alternative you can prescribe with total confidence. These restorations can be conventionally cemented and are virtually indestructible. Best results are with a modified shoulder bur for margins (Komet #6847KR). Important Monolithic Crown Shading Tip It is important to remember that monolithic restorations use one solid layer of veneering material to achieve their strength and fabrication efficiency. Subtle color variations will come from the underlying tooth, frame, and fluorescence of the live stains. These restorations look very natural and blend nicely on most cases. However, we are somewhat limited and unable to duplicate very customized effects. For those cases, the option of custom layered restorations should be considered.

We are very proactive about calling if we have suggestions on how to improve a case. Our goal is to always give you our best work. We offer most restorations as all inclusive per unit to simplify pricing and estimates. This includes model work on most cases. It will also include miscellaneous charges like connections, opposing occlusion, and metal linguals. Details of charges are outlined for specific types of restorations and a list of items not included is also listed with these fees.

All Inclusive Lab Fees Removable, Fixed/Removable, and Implant Removable Restorations Combination cases are often the most challenging restorations in dentistry due to the wide range of knowledge and skills required as more teeth and a combination of procedures are involved in treatment. These are our specialty restorations and we welcome the opportunity to partner with you on such cases. All parts will be included: the outsource cost, completed restoration and final delivery screws as applicable. Alloy is included on most, but not all types of restorations. Precision attachments will usually be billed extra per attachment. Specific details are noted with each type of restoration.

Removable cases will generally start with custom tray, bite rim and denture set-up to establish tooth position. This is a critical step in the process as everything will progress from that original determination. To help facilitate things, we will send sa mall HD video camera to record the set-up try-in and facilitate lab communication. For most implant/removable cases, after tooth position has been set-up, we will send a full contour composite frame to verify incisal edge position, vertical dimension, and centric relation. This extra step has proven to be a significant benefit. These critical functional determinates can be verified more effectively with a fixed appliance. All parts will be included; the outsource cost, completed restoration and final delivery screws as applicable. Alloy is included on most but not all types of restorations. Precision attachments will usually be billed extra per attachment. Specific details are noted with each type of restoration.
