Greco-Roman Strategic Plan 2013 - 2016

1

Executive Summary •Our Greco-Roman effort to win Olympic and World medals in the United States of

America is very unique as compared to freestyle. This document, we hope, will help to identify our GrecoRoman challenges that we are faced with. It will also provide a sound plan of attack to solve the problems and ways and means to deal with our challenges.

!

•In a nut shell, our countries wrestling system is based in folkstyle wrestling which is

very different from Greco-Roman. Greco has no middle school, no high school or no college that develops our GrecoRoman wrestlers. We have no school system that feeds our senior Olympic effort. Currently there are no organized competitions in the U.S. that hold Greco-Roman dual meets or school championships, etc.

!

•Our gene pool of youth wrestlers AND coaches are very, very thin.

On top of that, when you compare our senior Greco program to Russia’s (or other European countries) we have very limited athletes, coaches and dollars to work with, in contrast.

!

•That said we have proved to the world that the U.S. Greco-Roman program CAN win

internationally. Not too long ago many people, in the U.S. and abroad thought that winning internationally in Greco was impossible. Well we proved them wrong!

!

•Our historic 2007 World Championship Team victory, in Baku, Azerbaijan shocked the world (and many in the U.S.). Rulon Gardner’s remarkable Olympic Gold medal victory over Russian super star, Alexander Karelin in the Sydney Games along with; winning 23 world and Olympic medals from 1995 through 2008; having the second most Olympic medals of any country combined in Atlanta, Sydney, Athens and Beijing; and crowning three World Champions during this time period all show that the USA Greco-Roman wrestling team and program can produce Olympic and World medals.

!

•Greco-Roman wrestling has the potential to win seven Olympic medals at each

Olympic Games. We believe, without a doubt, that we can re-establish our U.S. Greco program as one of the best in the world. We believe we can accomplish our mission.

Our History

Our Greco Program during 1896-1995 (99 years)? •

Our Greco program only won 21 medals total in 99 years. That equals (.2) medals per year.

2005-2008: The US Greco-Roman Wrestling Team had its BEST performance ever during this quad. The US Greco Team won 8 world/Olympic medals in the 2005 – 2008 quad. This is the most world/Olympic medals ever won in a quad for the US Greco team. The US Greco team ranked second in the world for most medals won in this quad. Only Russia won more medals in this quad.

Historic moment: The US Greco Team won the 2007 Team World Championships in Baku, AZE winning three world medals. This is the first time in our US History that our Greco-Roman Wrestling Team has won a World Team title.

The US Greco Team was 3rd in the 2006 World Championships as a team in Guangzhou, China, winning three world medals and crowning a world champion (Joe Warren).

! How did we do 1995 – 2008? !! ! !

! !

!

The U.S. Greco Team placed 3rd in the 2001 World Championship in Patras, Greece winning three world medals and crowning a world champion (Rulon Gardner).

In the past four Olympic Games (Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, and Beijing) the US Greco Team has won eight Olympic medals, including Rulon Gardner’s Gold medal victory over Russian superstar, Alexander Karelin, who was the Russian that had not been defeated for 13 years. Only one country in the world has won more medals than the U.S. Team during those four Olympics (Russia).

The US Greco Team won 21 Olympic/World medals from 1995 – 2008 (14 years). This includes 13 different individuals. In the entire history of wrestling, prior to 1995 (99 years), the US Greco Team only won 21 Olympic/World medals. Note: there have been two less weight classes since the year 2000 and three less weight classes since the year 2005.

!! How did we do last Quad 2008-2012? ! ! •

Only 1 World medal was won in the 2009-2012 quad at the senior level

Our Junior team won 4 bronze medals in the 2009-2012 quad

Tactics & Planning Moving Forward Making a difference

Six Critical Challenges

Coaching

Athlete Gene Pool Tactics / Planning

• Create strong Communication system with top cadets and juniors

!• !

Create strong focus on recruiting at the NCAA level • Strengthen our USOEC program, both recruiting and development

!

• Create a series of Greco camps geared toward our NCAA recruits (Spring and Summer)

!

• Create a network of volunteer coaches across the USA, all working in unison with our national staff, identifying and developing young talent

!

• Create a youth gear reward program, where we award young wrestlers USA Wrestling gear as a way to

Tactics / Planning

• Create strong Volunteer Coaching network across USA

!

• Create strong Team Leader network across USA

!

• Strengthen our practice room (OTC & USOEC) atmosphere to include better training methods

Athlete Support

Experience

Tactics / Planning

• We need to

identify our best athletes and focus on them more specifically, in regards to resources and international training opportunities. We need to expose our best athletes with the best training partners in the world.

• Eliminate the existing Athlete Stipend program (or adjust it firmly, including minimum monthly standards)

!

• Create a new stipend program that pays athletes who are in the resident program. These dollars would be controlled by the national staff or a general manager (of sorts)

!

• General Manger (or committee) would be responsible for all $$ $ paid and all athlete requirements. This allows for coaches to build solid relationships with athletes

!

•Create a $20,000 per year stipend for athletes who qualify (approx 10 athletes) and are in resident program.

!!

Core Adherence • We need to create a

system of integrity when it comes to athletes focusing on our core objectives (training and preparation standards)

!• !

Re-structure our stipend system • General Manager to oversee all $$$ out and athlete adherence to the athlete contract and/or expectations

!

• More control to National Coaching staff when it comes to what weight classes we will take to the world events

!

Funding Donor Base

• Multi-Donor Base • Alumni Relations

Tactics & Planning Moving Forward Making a difference

International Experience: We need to identify our best athletes and focus on them more specifically, in regards to resources and international training opportunities. We need to expose our best athletes with the best training partners in the world.

!

- Our plan is to tighten up our focus on fewer athletes when it comes to participating in international competition and training camps. We will take less of a “shot gun” approach and more of a “rifle” approach. We will focus our international tour budget on fewer wrestlers that have the most potential to win medals. We will get these individuals more international experience by sending them to additional tours, etc.

! ! ! ! ! ! !!

- Not all national team members will qualify for international tours in the future (like in the past). We will be very selective at who will qualify to go on tour. The wrestler’s age, past results, future potential, and adherence to our national training plan will all be strongly considered when determining who will get a tour. - More dollars will be spent on just the few athletes that are following our national team plan and are most apt to win medals. These athletes will be our best athletes. - We are hoping we have the same budget as in the past but we will focus it on only the best wrestlers (potential wise). - We will asses which international tournaments are the best fit for the wrestlers that we will send. Potential foreign training camp opportunities will also be a factor when determining where we will compete and train. We will most always look for the toughest tournaments and training camp environments to go to. - Over the years we have established many great relationships with many coaches around the world. These coaches support our training camps and tournaments as well. Great tournaments and training camps are our priority. - We are very confident that the international tournament choices we make are the most effective and beneficial to our athletes. For seniors: • • • • • For juniors: • • • • •

!

Strengthen the Dave Schultz Cup Strengthen our other international tournaments (NYAC, Sunkist) Strengthen our international tournament schedule overseas (see attached schedule) Create additional opportunity for training camps overseas (see attached) Recruit more foreign countries to participate in our US Training camps and tournaments Strengthen our JR Concord Cup Create two more international tournaments for our age group (mid-west & east coast) Create additional opportunity for training camps overseas Recruit more foreign countries to participate in our U.S. training camps and tournaments at the USOEC Strengthen our funding source for junior level athletes, so we can get them the international experience that they need.
