GARY FIRTH
he Ainsdale Golf Course member is an extremely active 70-year-old who fills his weeks with golf and hockey. He plays golf four or five times a week and hockey about once a week during the summer. After he heads south in late October, he golfs twice a week and plays hockey two or three times a week at a rink in Ellenton, Florida (between Tampa and Sarasota). His son Dennis, who played on the Grey Bruce Junior Golf Tour and is now the director of golf at Mississauga Golf and Country Club, got Gary and his wife into the game about 25 years ago. Gary now plays to a 10 handicap and runs the Ainsdale Senior Men’s League, which he started 7 or 8 years ago. He typically doesn’t use a power cart and other than the weekly senior scramble - a 9-hole event his rounds are 18 holes. While hockey is still his first love, he says “golf is not that far behind.” He played very little competitive hockey in his younger days, but now he plays in the annual USA Adult Hockey National tournament in Florida where his team - the Florida Leafs - has won two championships.

Coverage shifts to online for the fall
t’s that time of year when Grey-Bruce Golf’s coverage of the local golf scene makes its transition from print and online to strictly online. In other words, this is the final print edition of the season. But as you know, golf news doesn’t stop happening in September. So just follow Grey-Bruce Golf on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or go to greybrucegolf.com You can also sign up on the website Steve Harron for an e-newsletter which offers news and great golf deals. From the While coverage will continue, this will Publisher be my last chance to say goodbye in print to a few people who are leaving the golf industry when the season wraps up. Nolly and Jennifer Kramer have sold their 9-hole SouthPort Golf Course and will be retiring from the business. I have known them ever since I started publishing Grey-Bruce Golf in 2005 and they have been super to deal with over the years. I wish them all the best in retirement (or whatever they decide to do next). Also leaving the local golf scene is Geza Kocsis, who bought Chippewa Golf Club about the same time I launched my magazine. The former high school teacher sold the course late last year but stayed on this year to manage it. Once again, it has been great dealing with Geza over the years and I wish him a happy retirement. All in all, it has been a very interesting year for local golf with one course closing (Stone Tree) and another one (Talisman) opening and ownership changes at three others Chippewa, Legacy Ridge and South-Port. We also saw Piper’s Glen converted from 18 to 12 holes to accommodate a housing development. And history was made at Scenic City Golf Course when the area’s first female Director of Golf - Jenilee Clark (Nabert) - was named. We’ve had local golfers competing at the provincial and national levels and doing well. And we’ve even had two holein-ones that were worth $10,000 each (see story page 12). It has been a lot of fun covering the golf scene and I am very much aware that this would not be possible without the loyal support of my advertisers and the many people who help me compile the results each month. So to them, my heartfelt thanks. And to my loyal readers, thank you for your ongoing interest in the publication. Enjoy this edition and please stay in touch online. Steve Harron Publisher/Editor

New owners consider re-opening Stone Tree
T
Condition of course to be assessed before decision is made
he new owners of Stone Tree Golf and Fitness Club are considering the possibility of re-opening the golf course at some point in the future. Someone will be hired to assess the condition of the course and then a decision will be made, the owners say. Lori Vulcanescu and Gordon Fawcett of Georgetown took possession of the golf course land, fitness centre and banquet facilities on July 29. The Georgian Apartments adjacent to the golf and fitness facilities were not part of the deal and will remain under the ownership of Jeff Mundle and his wife Lane McMeekin, who
purchased the entire property from Balnar Management on May 31. The apartments consist of 52 bachelor units and 23 one-bedroom units and are part of a 8.2-acre property north of the golf course. When the property was sold to Mundle, a condition of that sale was that it would not be sold to a golf business or operator. However, the new owners say there are no legal issues preventing them from re-opening the course. The driving range re-opened when the new owners took over and it will remain in operation for the rest of the season.

But the owners of South-Port Golf Course are definitely looking forward to more free time after the sale of their 9-hole facility closes on Oct. 31. They bought the golf course on April 29, 1992 after Nolly, who is from Aurora, sold his share of a trucking business that was based in the Greater Toronto Area. They’ve never regretted the decision to enter the golf business and have enjoyed working in a place where their customers come to have fun. “It has been a good ride. We’ve had a lot of fun,” said Jennifer. “All in all it has been a great experience.” But leaving is hard because of the relationships that have been developed over 25 years. “We’ve got a lot of good members here and I’m going to miss them. Paradise at The Lakes Pete Dye-designed course in Dominican Republic has 25 inland lakes and ponds By STEVE HARRON Grey-Bruce Golf
I
t’s safe to say that it’s a combination of things that creates a truly memorable golf vacation. And while it’s a given that the golf has to be good - or hopefully great - there other important factors such as the quality of accommodations and the ease of getting to the golf course. You also need good food and service and some enjoyable apres-golf activities. So you can imagine what would happen if all these components came together beautifully in an all-inclusive package at a gorgeous five-star resort on a Caribbean island. Yes, that’s right - it’s a wonderful thing! And I got to experience it earlier this year at Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort near Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. What struck me most about the experience was how easy things were at this resort. You wake up in a room that overlooks one of the world’s top-10 beaches then you take a leisurely stroll to a poolside breakfast buffet offering so many choices it’s almost overwhelming. Sitting near the pool sipping coffee and enjoying a delicious breakfast is definitely a great way to start the day. And we haven’t even got to the golf yet! But before looking at the resort’s impressive Pete Dyedesigned golf course, here are some things you should know about the resort. It has1,991 rooms and it’s actually two resorts in one with an adult-only facility near the main family resort. Eighty per cent of the rooms have an ocean view. They have five pools, including a rooftop infinity pool that overlooks the ocean, a fully-equipped fitness centre and a beautiful spa that includes hydrotherapy and other health and beauty treatments.
Page 14
Food choices are incredible with 14 on-site restaurants most of them distinctly different with décor and cuisine from various countries of the world (not to be missed is Kyoto - the Japanese restaurant where they will put on quite a show preparing your dinner). After dinner, you have some other great choices to make and they’re all right on the resort. There’s nightly entertainment in a 1,400-seat open-air theatre or you can head to one of the resort’s 16 bars including a disco and sports bar. Other choices include a bowling alley and casino. You can also shop until midnight at the many retail outlets within the resort. Being bored should never be a problem at this resort. And it definitely won’t be at the resort’s golf course where the course, with 25 inland lakes and ponds and 122 bunkers, will demand your full attention. Dye is known for his tough golf courses (think Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, Ocean Course at Kiawah Island) but in this case he has done an excellent job of making the course challenging but also highly playable. The key is to choose the right tee deck. You have five choices and they range from 4,688 to 6,555 yards, giving everyone from the scratch golfer to the high-handicapper a chance at a decent round. Quick Tip: Having played from both the whites and the blues, I would recommend choosing less yardage than you would back home because you’ll get less roll on the soft fairways and you’ll have to focus on strategy, not power, to avoid the sand and water. The meticulously-maintained course starts off with two of its easiest holes - a par 4 with a generous fairway that plays only 285 yards from the whites and a 144-yard par 3 that has a large and inviting green. Then the real work starts. The third hole is a straight-away par 4 but at 394 yards from the whites and with bush down

Course challenging and a whole lot of fun to play both sides of the fairway - and a single tree on the right side of the fairway providing an extra obstacle - it requires both power and precision. The first six holes on the front nine have a real parkland feel to them but the views open up as you tee it up on #7. The tree-lined fairways are gone and suddenly you’re looking at lots of water, sand and palm trees. It’s gorgeous but a little scary at the same time. The most memorable hole on the front is the 9th - a spectacular par 3 with an island green reminiscent of Dye’s Photo by Steve Harron most famous par 3 - the 17th at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Verda, Florida. The 10th is a great risk-reward hole with water all the way down the left side. It’s only 118 yards from the whites but with any wind at all it’s a tricky shot to a two-tiered green that is protected by not only bunkers but also one of Dye’s signature features railway ties (hit one of those and your ball could go anywhere). Mercifully, the drop areas on the par 3s are right next the green so if you dunk your tee shot you still have a chance at bogey. Dye is also known for great risk-reward holes and you’ll find plenty of them on this course, especially on the back 9 where water comes into play more often. The 10th is a great example. It’s a 308-yard par 4 dogleg left with water all the way down the left side. Take it down the left side and you’ll have a short shot into the green or you can play it safe to the right and take your chances with a longer iron into a green sitting on the edge of the water. The ultimate risk-reward hole is the 15th - a par 4 that plays only 218 yards from the whites. How could you not go for it, right? But that’s the beauty in the design - if you go for the green there is plenty of trouble to deal with, including a pond An impressive entrance to the spectacular resort in the Punta Cana along the right side and bunkers on both sides of region of the Dominican Republic. the fairway. And the green is surrounded by trees. An easy 5-iron and a short pitch should get you And once you’re done, I think you’ll agree that Dye has in birdie territory but Dye is counting on some players being done a masterful job of creating a resort course that looks unable to resist the urge to get on in one. great, is challenging but fair and - best of all - is so much fun Whether you botch it or birdie it, one thing is certain: your to play. next three holes will be memorable.
