We did it! 60 holes in a day Marathon raises money and awareness for Golf Fore Change initiative BY STEVE HARRON Grey-Bruce Golf

P

laying 60 holes in one day was not what I expected. I thought the first 18 to 36 holes would be fun then it would be a bit of a grind. But that was not the case at all. I had a great time pretty much all day. Maybe it was the good company that day or the glorious weather, but the time just flew by. The only time it seemed like work was after completing 54 holes. That’s when my back starting to send me messages that maybe it was time to stop all that twisting and turning. But with a little stretching and some easy swings I was able to complete all 60 holes. I was quite amazed that I could do it as my previous best was only 36 holes in a day. While it definitely took a toll on my back, Alan Barfoot after a soak in a hot tub and a trip to my chiropractor’s office I was feeling surprisingly good the next day. Making the day more enjoyable was the chance to play with Stan Didzbalis, chair of the Golf Fore Change event, Grey County Warden Alan Barfoot and Paul Hill from Bayshore Broadcasting. Alan joined us for 14 holes in the morning before leaving for a meeting and Paul played with us during our 2nd round. One of the cool things that came out of our marathon was Paul’s commitment Paul Hill afterwards to play 57 holes the following Tuesday to match his age - and, of course, raise money for the United Way’s Golf Fore Change. He even said he was inspired by us. Wow! I guess he figured if two kinda old guys with bad backs can play 60 holes he could certainly handle 57. All in all it was a great day. We raised awareness and money for the Golf Fore Change initiative which will help the United Way of Bruce Grey - and we had a lot of fun doing it. Event results were not available at press time but will be included in the next edition of Grey-Bruce Golf.

TOUGHEST HOLES

in Grey-Bruce

The 16th hole at Sauble Golf and Country Club is rated as the toughest on the par 72 layout. The par 5 hole plays 480 yards from the whites and requires several strategic shots, particuarly off the tee because of a water hazard around the 200-yard mark that crosses all but a small section of fairway. Unless you’re totally confident you can carry the hazard, the smart play is to lay up in front of it and plan to get on the green in three shots. Other obstacles to be avoided include out of bounds on the left, a row of trees on the right side and a single tree in the middle of the fairway which can come into play on your 2nd shot. If you don’t make it past that single tree then your approach is tricky because the green is below a hill and hard to see.

Watch and learn gentlemen!

G

It’s far more helpful for us to study the swings of LPGA Tour players

olf digest had a wondeful article on Lexi Thompson, Michelle Wie, and the new fitness in women’s

golf. The insightful article mentioned something I’ve preached for years…that the LPGA Tour is better to watch from a learning perspective than the PGA Tour. It really is! I played recently with pretty good female golfer, Lysa. And watching her reminded me about learning from the way LPGA players swing. As men, we tend to ‘muscle’ out our problems on a course. We’re generally rigid, we swing too hard, we force too much! Gentlemen, look at the ladies!! They use the flow and rhythm of their entire body to get the max distance and accuracy with their shots. If it’s one thing I want to eventually be known for as a decent amateur, is that I’m smooth…and only the entire body swinging in unison can make that happen. Fellas, swing like the pros on the LPGA Tour and you’ll start hitting like them…and that’s a great thing, believe me… because 75% of them already out-hit you!!

Page 10

Thanks Lysa. Take my advice. Find a decent female golfer, and buy her a round…of golf…maybe a drink too for the lesson… And by the way, we recently celebrated a Canadian winning an LPGA Tour Major. Congrats Brooke Henderson! I’m betting it’s the first of many! Keep swinging, we’re all in this together… JD hosts the radio version of From the Whites Fridays at 7:50 a.m. on the myFM Radio Network, and its 17 Ontario markets, and online through myfmradio.ca

Spectacular golf in St. Kitts And it’s only going to get better as new courses come on board

I

t’s never too soon to start planning your winter golf destination. And one location that may not be on your radar right now, but you will be hearing more about soon is the St. Kitts-Nevis area in the Caribbean. The two tropical islands, about 2.5 miles apart, offer beautiful beaches, rainforests and dramatic scenery, making them popular getaways. But with recent new developments they are bound to attract the attention of golfers looking for great places to play in reliably warm weather. The golf product now consists of two terrific courses - Royal St. Kitts Golf Club at the Marriott Resort in Basseterre and the Four Seasons Resort Course on Nevis Island. Soon it will expand to include Irie Fields on Kittitian Hill, an 18-hole Ian Woosnam design built high above the Atlantic Ocean as part of a luxury resort. And within the next few years a fourth course - a Tom Fazio design overlooking the Caribbean Sea - is expected to be open in the Christophe Harbour area on the other end of the island. Both of these courses are in spectacular settings and together they should amp up the excitement for St. Kitts Golf. Irie Fields will offer golfers a truly unique experience as it is the first course purposely designed to be fully organic and edible. Yes, that’s right - an edible golf course. That means golfers making their rounds can munch on fruit grown on the course, which covers 200 acres of a 400-acre tropical farm. The 18-hole par 71 course will use only natural fertilizers and no pesticides. Weed control will be achieved by closing the course once a week so locals can hand-pick the weeds.

Page 14

“This will never be like Augusta (National Golf Club) because we won’t use pesticides to make it look pristine,” said Carlos Salazar, general manager of Belle Mont Farm on Kittitian Hill. “But there is a story behind it - it is consistent with what we do.” What the new course will be is a natural golf experience where hundreds of grazing sheep will be unofficial members of the groundskeeping crew. Located within hiking distance of the highest point on St. Kitts - the 3,792-foot Mount Liamugia - the course offers stunning views of the Atlantic and the islands of St. Barths, Saba and St. Eustatius. The resort also provides luxury rooms, an infinity pool, el fresco dining, beach access and much more. For more information, go to www.bellemontfarm.com/discover/golf/ At Christophe Harbour, there is plenty of excitement about a planned community that will include a super yacht marina and village and a golf course overlooking the Caribbean Sea and nearby Nevis Island. Like Kittitian Hill, it will offer water views on every hole. Golfers will start along the harbour then climb 450 feet to the peak. Developers have high expectations for the course and Real Estate Sales Executive Martin Roache, an accomplished golfer himself, believes the scenic values are going to be the best in the Caribbean. The 600-acre development is a project of the Darby family, developers of Kiawah Island Resort near Charleston, South Carolina which was the location of the Ryder Cup in 1991 and the PGA Championship in 2012. The family sold the Kiawah Island Resort and is now focusing on the St. Kitts development. Roache says the Christophe Harbour course will be more golfer-friendly than the notoriously tough Pete Dye Ocean Course at Kiawah.
