#BeBoldForChange
UAE’s first ‘Smart The theme for International Flower’ blossoms at Women’s Day 2017 Dubai Municipality
I
nternational Women’s Day (IWD) globally marked on March 8 celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. It honours the grit and determination of woman to face all odds fearlessly. This year, the IWD 2017 campaign theme is asking all women out there to #BeBoldForChange. In line with the current
international political and economic scenario, the theme rightly propagates the right of women to take stern stand against gender bias, inequality or any form of violence. This movement will resonate the stance taken by several campaigners over the years for women’s rights in every spear of life. Women’s Day is not just celebrating achievements, but also about empowering women to take any decision without fear. With increased
participation from women in government, public and private sectors, the relevance of including more women in the decision making process is gaining momentum. Women are not just adding value to the economy, but taking huge strides in shaping its future. Several countries have officially declared March 8 as a holiday for women. Various events are held all over the world to inspire women and advocate the cause of social equality.
D
ubai Municipality has installed UAE’s first flower-shaped solar panel that can reorient itself to face sunlight. Developed by an Austrian company, the ‘Smart Flower’ contains sensors allowing it to automatically track rays of sunlight. The Smart Flower is one of several initiatives started by the municipality’s sustainability and renewable energy department.
This feature makes it 23 per cent more efficient than traditional roof-top solar systems. The device has a weather-adapting feature and a passive ventilation system to ensure it is efficient in high temperatures. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of the Municipality, said the Smart Flower is in
line with the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. “Dubai Municipality’s commitment to innovation and implementation of creative ideas in line with Dubai Government’s vision of becoming the world’s most innovative and sustainable city,” said Mr Lootah.

M
ILKLAB, an Australian-made range of milks uniquely designed for specialty coffee is sponsoring a Blind Barista Battle, where the country’s best baristas will go head to head in an exciting latte art competition.
The Blind Barista Battle will be held at the Sum of Us Coffee Roastery at the Burj al Salam Trade Centre on Sunday March 5, 2017 from 9am. Thirty talented baristas will be challenged to produce latte art patterns using various dairy and
non-dairy milk types in the knockout-style event. Cash prizes and product will be awarded to top three places, as judged on skill, presentation and taste of the baristas’ MILKLAB latte creations. “A coffee issue that has plagued hipsters and baristas the world over is how to make a latte without having the milk split and curdle due to the high acidity of black coffee and temperature. MILKLAB was born from the realisation that the best coffee needs better milk, and is designed to texture and stretch to

Kids Finance Initiative classes are right on the money

their own experiences and join in, and the classes have been incredibly interactive,” she explains. “We’ve started the programme with the softer side of finance, looking at the psychology behind spending and concepts such as wants versus needs, because we’ve designed it to be as real-life as possible – essentially, bringing finance to life for kids. And it’s worked as they’ve all been so engaged and receptive.”
First term gets great buy-in from parents and pupils, as children start to change their spending habits
“We’re midway through the first programme of classes and we’re pleased to say it’s going incredibly well,” says founder Marilyn Pinto. “We’ve had several parents tell us their children are really enjoying it – which, of course, is crucial – but even more rewarding for us, they’re telling us their kids are already changing their habits and their attitude to money.” The programme comprises eight weekly classes covering everything from saving and investing to sensible borrowing, the use of finance tools such as credit cards, and more. Sessions are divided into primary age and secondary, with content tailored to suit each group. “This initiative is something we didn’t have growing up, so we learnt the hard way,” says Shilpi Sengupta, mum to Kids Finance Initiative student Raashi. “I’ve already observed that Raashi is
becoming very understanding towards saving; for the first time, she’s talking about saving money, and wanting to understand the value of that money.” Ramzi Soujah, father of Leena and Vera, agrees and admits that prior to starting the programme his children had no sense of the value of money. “This course is providing some hope that a professional can get the message across to them that they need to think twice before blowing their pocket money on senseless things, things they don’t need,” he says. “After only three sessions we’re seeing them change their behaviour, and they have even started questioning our behaviour and our purchases!” Manisha Daya, course educator for Kids Finance Initiative, says the reaction she’s getting from the children themselves is an excellent indication of how well the sessions are going. “All of the kids have been enthusiastic, keen to share
Founder Marilyn is confident the initiative is a valuable, much-needed part of education and will go from strength to strength. “As I said when I set up Kids Finance Initiative, piggy banks and weekly allowances just weren’t cutting it for my kids,” she says. “They were cavalier with their allowances, flippant with their purchasing choices… just being kids, really. But I felt they needed more direction and more of an understanding of what finances really mean. I know we’re getting this message across and I’m excited to see what the future holds for the programme and the initiative.” The next eight-week Kids Finance Initiative programme starts on April 15 and details can be found at www.kidsfinaceinitiative.com.

The island’s white sand beaches surround a mountainous interior. Those with
the energy can make the 10km trek from one side of Silhouette to the other taking in the incredible views and wildlife.
Once owned by pirates, Silhouette Island was taken over by the Dauban family in the mid-19th Century. Originally from France and settled in Mauritus, the family were responsible for developing its extensive plantations. Following its purchase by
the Seychelles government in 1983, Silhouette Island was then home to a small hotel, which was later replaced by the larger Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa. Silhouette Island is also believed to be where the famous corsair Jean-François Hodoul buried his treasure.
Silhouette Island has a barrier reef with some of the healthiest coral in the Seychelles and its sheer granite cliffs make for
some spectacular diving even down to depths of 35 meters. Night diving is safe here as the water is warm and very clear. Recently, guitar sharks have been spotted along the seabed, a rare sighting for avid divers. It also shelters a huge diversity of flora and fauna, from the incense tree to 125-year old giant tortoises. The well-maintained trails allow visitors to explore beaches and parts of the rainforest.
