Smart Dubai unveils Artists for Change ‘Dubai Now’ platform initiative to reveal the

T

he Smart Dubai Office has recently launched an electronic platform called “Dubai Now” during an interactive workshop titled “Smarter Together”. The platform is meant to act as a one-stop shop for all government services in the Emirate of Dubai. Her Excellency Dr Aisha bint Butti bin Bishr, Director-General of the Smart Dubai Office, attended the workshop, along with H.E Wesam Lootah, CEO of Smart Dubai Government, as well as representatives from some of the most prestigious private organisations in the country and members of the media.

The Dubai Now platform targets all members of the public, the business sector, and visitors. It compiles government services and integrates them in an effort to provide easy and smooth access. The platform includes 11 categories of services: security and justice, public transport, payments and bills, visas and residence, driving, health, business and employment, education, housing, Islam, and miscellaneous.

The smart services provided through the platform include locating the nearest car registration centre; payment of traffic violations, water and electricity bills, and Etisalat and Du fees; topping up Salik and Nol cards; accessing Dubai Customs accounts; and services

such as “Ajari”, “Makani”, and “Criminal Case Look-up”. The platform also allows users to donate to Dubai Cares, Al Jalila Foundation, and others.

In addition to facilitating access to services for the general public, Dubai Now allows participating government entities to more easily develop their services, and to choose their designs using a smart library with extensive insight into service design and development. Developers will be able to offer services via the platform, as long as they abide by previously set standards. The Smart Dubai Government then approves the services added to the platform, which is set to soon be open to private companies. This serves to crystallise the cooperation between the public and private sectors in the city.

Queue times drop at DXB

P

assenger wait times at Dubai International (DXB) have dropped by as much as ten per cent during the first quarter of 2017. This is due to the implementation of some new technologies. Recent results show that in the first three months of 2017, 84 per cent of transfer passengers were processed within 5 minutes, 68 per cent of arrival passengers were processed within 15 minutes, and 87 per cent of departing passengers were processed within ten minutes.

The first technology driving down transaction times and queues at immigration check points is Smart Gates. Smart Gates, and specifically a new service that enables the use of Emirates ID cards to pass through automated immigration gates at DXB, has pushed down transaction

times to an average of 10 to 15 seconds per passenger. Since its introduction last year, over 1.3 million UAE users have taken advantage of the service. Completely free of charge and requiring no pre-registration, the service is available on some 120 Smart Gates across DXB and makes passing through immigration fast and convenient for all UAE residents. Launched last year by GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigner Affairs), Emirates Identity Authority and Dubai Airports, the system can quickly, accurately and efficiently confirm the identity, travel plans and eligibility of UAE residents to enter and depart the country. The second technology behind shorter wait times is a sophisticated motion sensor system that allows

the airport to track queues in real time. The system consists of a series of 530 sensors that have been installed at crucial passenger processing areas in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 at DXB. The sensors track the movement of people, collecting and computing valuable data like passenger wait times and queue lengths, and based on those factors, calculating the prevailing level of service. The data is conveyed via a simple mobile application in use by more than 5,000 operational staff across Dubai Airports, airlines, and control authorities working at the airport. The mobile application alerts all teams in real time and allows Dubai Airports operational staff to quickly identify bottlenecks and facilitate the deployment of resources to address them. Terminal 2 implementation is slated to take place during 2017.

The company has revolutionized the conventional used cars market as well as disrupted the sector, making it a hassle free task to sell your car. With technology driving the company’s core business, Sellanycar. com has managed to break the traditional selling barrier in an industry which is considered to be highly disorganized and scattered. Your Neighbourhood Flash interacted with Saygin Yalcin, CEO of Sellanycar. com where he discussed about the used car industry, changing the mindset of the customers, choosing social media path and solving problems of the society through entrepreneurship. How difficult was it to change the mindset of a regular customer to move from the traditional selling pattern to an online set up? The GCC and in particular the UAE have immensely improved their infrastructure for entrepreneurial endeavors. Consumers are considering online transactions as part of regular life. This will only continue to improve. If it comes to challenges we still face obstacles in the venture capital sphere in the area between 10 million and 75 million dollars investment tickets. On the entrepreneur’s side, we see that education is not sufficiently supporting relevant information for aspiring entrepreneurs. Having said that we will need to restructure syllabus for our universities to

7

There is a major paradigm shift in the way we sell cars today. Is the market coping up well with this technological shift? The GCC will soon shift focus from new cars to used cars. The latter will be three times larger than the new car business within the next decade. Many other start-ups have cropped up post Sellanycar mania hit the market? How is the company distinguishing itself from the competitors? Used car market has outperformed the new car business significantly. It is growing faster than ever before as you may be aware, the UAE is actually the region’s trading hub in a re-export destination. SellAnyCar.com guarantees to purchase any car in 30 minutes at a fair market value. We have built a unique instant valuation database for any car in the world which allows you to see initial value for your car within 15 seconds. Moreover, we have built a unique market place which is a real time stock exchange for cars. In this way any consumer can now sell any car to any automotive professional via SellAnyCar.com without having to worry about local conditions or the opinion of one single party. Sellanycar is a technologically advanced concept. How are you planning to take it to the next level? We have grown over 600% and will further do so by expanding our market place, in the next phase we will open in further GCC markets. Our committed team is constantly working on additional products within our portfolio which we can’t wait to share with you. How is the ‘Start up

hero’ project going? How many start-ups have benefitted out of this initiative? Startup Hero is the latest show in the Middle East to turn business ideas into reality by connecting young entrepreneurs with potential investors with the United Arab Emirates being home to the brightest and boldest ideas by entrepreneurs and investors from all corners of the globe. Apart from pitching ideas, participants received exposure and advice from business professionals and investors with the brightest minds in the region. Our Applicant pool continues to grow day by day, and so far we have benefited over 30 startup ideas from all around the world. Your YouTube channels are a huge hit among entrepreneurs, car enthusiasts and general public as well. What inspired you to take the social path? Social media in particular has grown massively, and continues to grow all the time. It is definitely an effective and powerful tool, and I use social media to pass on my knowledge and advice to aspiring entrepreneurs and students. Your advice for budding entrepreneurs. In my opinion, for entrepreneurs to assess how ready they are to start their own venture they need to think of six main questions, one of them being “ Are you solving a problem?”, by studying the idea itself and understanding if it is in fact represents a solution to a current problem. 1. Are you solving a problem? 2. Are you passionate about your idea? 3. Is it the right timing? 4. Are there any regulatory showstoppers 5. Is it profitably scalable? 6. How is the monetization strength?
