FIRESIDE CHAT WITH COURTNEY B. VANCE '82 & DR. ROBIN L. SMITH: THE INVISIBLE ACHE JANUARY 16TH | 6:30PM – 8:00PM | HARVARD HALL Join us for an exclusive fireside chat featuring Tony and two-time Emmy winner Courtney B. Vance '82, and acclaimed psychologist, Dr. Robin L. Smith, as they discuss their new book The Invisible Ache. The two will be led in conversation by award-winning broadcast journalist, Carmen Fields for a crucial discussion that asks the question, “How do we begin to uplift and empower Black men in a world that refuses to see their humanity?” In America, we teach that strength means holding back tears and shaming your own feelings. In the Black community, these pressures are especially poignant. Poor mental health outcomes-- including diagnoses of depression and anxiety, reliance on prescription drugs, and suicide-- have skyrocketed in the past decade. Institutionalized racism, microaggressions, and stress caused by socioeconomic factors have led Black individuals to face worse mental health outcomes than any other demographic. Together, Vance and Dr. Smith provide a guide for Black men navigating life’s ups and downs, reclaiming mental well-being, and examining broken pieces to find whole, full-hearted living. Coming from their interview with Oprah on the OWN Network and an appearance on CBS Mornings, Vance and Dr. Smith are making their only Boston appearance at the Harvard Club of Boston. This event is offered at no charge as a benefit of your membership. Registration is required. REGISTER HERE
