EDITOR’S NOTE: Chain Saw Age’s technical editor Donn Lawty often editorialized on the departmental pages he maintained, such as “Shoptalk,” and “Racer’s Edge.” However, the article below, published in December 1985, was one of two columns he penned for “Off The Kerf,” CSA’s formal editorial page. It reflects Lawty’s appreciation for the past and his philosophy that we should always mix a little fun with the work. Finding it topical even now, it is reprinted as part of our homage to him. For a full look back on his numerous contributions to the magazine and industry, a tribute penned by former CSA Editor Ken Morrison appears on page 8.

I

was barely tall enough to see over the dash, but I can vividly recall storming down Neilton Flats in that awesome machine. At the time, of course, I had no idea what affect that ride would have on me and my future interests. And I don’t imagine that the brilliant engineer/inventor in Wisconsin realized the impact his current project would have on my thinking. As I recall, the time was late 1955. The vehicle was a brand new ‘56 Ford Country Squire wagon. To a youngster of nine or 10, that car was a sight to behold. Bright yellow outside, buckskin vinyl inside all stitched up in a western pattern. My early years were spent in a little place in Washington called Amanda Park. My father was a part-time chain saw dealer and the shop was one step removed from the kitchen. Mom had to wind her way through piles of 5-49s, 3-25s and 4-30s just to find the washing machine. The washer doubled as a workbench and the laundry soap shared shelf space with boxes of spare parts. I never gave much thought to power saws back then, except that they were noisy and smelly and they made it difficult for Mom to do the laundry. But that was before I rode in the neat Ford wagon with the boost gauge. As I was later to learn, the boost gauge measured how much work the supercharger was doing on that 292 T-Bird powered wagon. Decals made no secret of the wagon’s inner workings. “Supercharged by McCulloch,” they proclaimed. And nearby on each fender flew a familiar solitary goose. Upon his arrival, I would take my place in the front seat of that nasty Ford. Off we’d go, going at least “a hunnert,” with my dad riding shotgun and the McCulloch salesman doing the driving. I was in seventh-heaven and never wanted the rides to end. The torque produced by that supercharged V8 could cause blindness. And the sound that emanated from the blower as it reached full boost, was enough to drive you crazy. Those were the good ole days. I often wonder if the progress made by this industry during the last 30 years is really progress. I’m sure there are many who would argue that the current state of business is much better now that it was 30 years ago. I wouldn’t say it’s better—just more complex. The complexity of modern business has taken the fun out of it. To get by, you’ve got to dispense with the frivolities and get down to business. There are books to be kept, money to be borrowed, interest to be paid, accounts to be collected, inventory to be reduced, sales costs to be lowered. Oh sure, a lot of these concerns were present back when. But, there was always time for fun. And sometimes it was the fun that helped promote the business. Remember the McC-blown Ford? What if Bob McCulloch hadn’t developed his centrifugal supercharger, or if McCulloch salesmen didn’t drive blown station wagons? The chain saw industry would probably be the same. But, in looking back, I think it’s safe to say that many of today’s trend-setting innovations can be attributed to the high performance enthusiasts of yesterday. So, let’s not forget our roots. And, let’s make time for a little fun along with business. PET It just may help.

Stihl Northwest Expands Operations

Stihl has announced the expansion and relocation of its Stihl Northwest branch operations with the opening of

its new location in Centralia, Wash. The new facility boasts a significant increase in warehouse space, as well as technology upgrades that will enhance the company’s ability to serve the 500+ Stihl dealers in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. “We are extremely pleased to celebrate the opening of this new and expanded location,” says Stihl Inc. President Bjoern Fischer. “This 100,000 sq. ft. facility represents our continued investment in the growth of locally owned Stihl dealers and our confidence in the U.S. market.” The new location adds more warehouse space with taller, longer racks and more efficient picking methods to speed up the fulfillment of dealer orders and deliveries. Additionally, separate classroom, workshop and sheltered outdoor training facilities will provide Stihl Northwest the ability to offer dealers enhanced training and technical service capabilities. Located approximately 11 miles from the former facility, Stihl Inc. selected the city of Centralia because of its easy access to Interstate 5 and proximity to primary shipping hubs. “The new facility more than doubles our warehouse square footage and gives us additional space for future growth,” says Casey Kralovetz, director of branch operations at Stihl Northwest. “Stihl dealers are the core of our business and the new location with improved efficiency of our warehouse operations, enables us to deliver products to most of our dealers within 24 to 48 hours.”

Prolific Tech Editor Donn Lawty Delivered High-Interest Content Donn Lawty, former technical editor at Power Equipment Trade’s precursor, Chain Saw Age, died on March 30 at the family home in Washougal, Wash., after battling cancer. He was 74. BY KEN MORRISON

L

awty, who served as Chain Saw Age’s (CSA) technical editor from 1981 to 1988, generated a steady stream of technical content that helped give CSA its “must read” status among power equipment dealers during the 1980s. Lawty’s passion for engine technology and high performance was honed at Harbor McCulloch, his family’s busy chain saw dealership in Aberdeen, Wash. He worked there after school and on weekends until high school graduation. He continued his technical pursuits by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, where he served as an automotive mechanic. Upon his discharge from the Air Force, Lawty returned to Aberdeen and briefly operated his own saw shop. He remained immersed in engine technology as a motorcycle builder and racer, and frequent factory service school attendee. In 1972, Lawty was recruited as a territory sales/service manager for Portland, Ore., distributor Scostco, Inc. In 1977, he moved across town to distributor R.L. Gould & Co. Northwest where he was appointed service manager. In the summer of 1979, while attending a R.L. Gould NW golf tournament, he approached me about adding more technical content to the magazine. I had just taken the reins at CSA and, though somewhat overwhelmed, recognized the value in Lawty’s suggestions. As a former commercial fisherman, I was a seatof-the-pants mechanic. And, even at this 8

n

JUNE 2021

n

early stage of my career at CSA, I’d realized that our readers were mechanics first, businessmen second. So, I readily agreed to Lawty’s proposal. He didn’t waste any time! His first technical article, which addressed hot-weather saw problems, appeared just a few weeks later in CSA, August 1979. That was followed by the intro-

duction of the monthly “Service Department” feature in September 1979, in which he penned the first of a four-part series on guide bar repair. Before leaving his technical editor post in mid-1988, Lawty would craft another 50 “Service Department” articles. And, he would coordinate another 52 installments written by various industry experts. Throughout the ‘80s, there was a “Service Department” article in every issue. “Service Department” was not the only tech-based addition. Lawty was also instrumental in launching the question/answer column, “Shoptalk,” which also appeared in every issue from February 1981 on. It became the maga-

zine’s most popular feature, where tech questions, industry issues, controversies, and the like were aired. Lawty also created a “Shop Tips” column, where readers could share their time-saving service shortcuts. Another one of Lawty’s popular editorial brainstorms was the “CSA Hot Saw Project.” This step-by-step series, which turned a stock Jonsered 111 into a super-modified, high-performance racing saw, began in October 1981 and ran through August 1983. I still get requests for reprints of this series. By this time, he had left R.L. Gould NW and was operating his own power equipment dealership in southeast Portland. All of his CSA contributions to this point had been done on a part-time basis. In 1985, he came to work at CSA full-time. Lawty was incredibly talented; he was a skilled draftsman and composed most of the technical illustrations for his articles. (There were no computer graphics back then!) He was an excellent carpenter and was well versed in most business practices. There wasn’t much he couldn’t do. One of the most impressive aspects of Lawty’s approach was his emphasis on understanding the principles involved. He insisted that there is no way to execute an efficient diagnosis and repair, without a grasp of the operational theory. He also believed that competitive, high-performance engineering, be it in automobiles or chain saws, was a catalyst for technical innovation that benefitted all. He had a unique ability to express technical topics in an easy-to-understand manner. Lawty’s contributions to our small publishing company and CSA were immeasurable. His help in focusing a significant share of our content on technical topics gave the magazine its incredible audience appeal. As readership and interest grew, so did the magazine. By

the mid 1980s, it was averaging 56 pages per issue; 12 issues per year. Much of this volume was exclusive content that no other trade magazine could offer. Lawty viewed subjects related to performance enhancements and technical tricks and tips as a fun side of the dealer’s business. He felt it was vital to mix a bit of this fun and humor with the all the serious content that CSA also presented. In mid-1988, after an incredible 10-year association with CSA, Lawty decided to go back into the distribution side of the power equipment industry, joining Sierra Saw Chain’s newly-established Portland branch. He later closed out his power equipment career with a move to Carlton Northwest, the cutting-attachment company’s direct-to-dealer regional sales operation. For reasons his many friends and colleagues never understood, Lawty left the power equipment industry abruptly in the mid-1990s. According to his wife, Joan, he remained very busy in subsequent years, applying his technical skills as a carpenter/ handyman, and builder of custom bicycles, golf clubs, fishing poles and electric guitars. In later years he even used his skills to become an accomplished quilter! Donn Lawty is survived by his wife Joan Lawty, three children, eight grandchildren, and three siblings. Many industry veterans share my view that Lawty left the power equipment trade far too early. Nevertheless, his vast and excellent editorial record in CSA will remain as a testament to his enthusiasm, talent, knowledge and the incredible help he brought to outdoor equipment dealers worldwide. PET Ken Morrison was editor/production manager at Chain Saw Age from 1979 to 1990. He also served as senior editor and technical contributor at Power Equipment Trade from 1991 to 2008.

Dealership Adds Second Location Father and son provide one-stop convenience for hardware supplies and power equipment products. BY PATRICK DUNNING MECHANICSVILLE, Va. he folks at the two-location Ace Hardware & Equipment in the area surrounding Richmond, Va. identify themselves as a hardware store with an independent power equipment dealership inside. Success as an Elite dealer for Stihl and Cub Cadet products through the years at Ace’s longtime Ashland location, acquired in 2000,

prompted serious inquiries about if they could replicate their model at a new location. Robert Traweek, 59, owner and general manager, and his son, Mike Traweek, 32, store manager, shopped the area for over two years seeking the ideal size and floor plan to suit their needs before finding the perfect fit 16 miles south of their Ashland location, in Mechanicsville, and jumped on it immediately. “You can duplicate an Ace store,” Robert says. “But can you duplicate an Ace store with a substantial power equipment niche to it? We needed a building that was a certain size and

“We will support our brands regardless of where it’s bought. It keeps you busy and for the good side of business it helps you earn your customers.” —Mike Traweek and Cub Cadet agreed. “We’re striving to have the same experience at both locations. We went with the same brands which was really important to us before signing anything,” Mike says. “If you can get it at our Ashland store you’ll be able to get it here.”

that became possible in Mechanicsville.” The business’s growth on the power equipment side made it even easier to pull the trigger on a second location that had its soft opening April 1, 2021. He believes, granted through a father’s eyes, his son Mike was the driver behind the expansion. “He’s become somewhat of a player in the power equipment arena.” Robert says. “He’s young, intelligent and customer focused. Mike goes through the lengths to match the customer with the

right product for them. Not just the cheapest or most expensive.” The younger Traweek graduated with an automotive technology degree and turned wrenches for a while before deciding he preferred working with his father. He was power equipment manager at the Ashland branch for 10 years before taking the role of store manager at their new store and says it was pertinent their main brands came alongside them before moving forward with a sister store and thankful Stihl

Ace Hardware & Equipment operates as a Stihl and Cub Cadet dealership with service writers, technicians and parts department. Mike was proud to have 10 Stihl products walk out of their store opening day and says everything Stihl is selling great. “I have a soft spot for Stihl and love that they are a family owned company,” he says. “I train my people heavily on it. It’s a good product and they stand behind it well; I share a lot of the same values they do.” The Mechanicsville shop carries Stihl trimmers from the FS 38 through the FS 131. They also stock the BG 50 handheld blower up to the BR 800 C-E backpack, and saw models from the MSA 120 C-B through the MS 500i. Other Stihl products include hedge

trimmers, pressure washers and the MM 56 C-E Yard Boss cultivator that took Mike by surprise with its extreme demand. “This whole year the demand for garden tillers has been incredible. It is a market that was declining for ten years and went tenfold this year,” Mike reports. “Now we can’t get tillers out fast

enough. It is incredible how that market has flipped and will be interesting to see if it can stay or will drop back off.” Residential customers make up 93% of sales and several of Cub Cadet’s commercial Pro Z mowers have sold to homeowners utilizing zero-turns for larger property and farms in the nearby Hanover County, Virginia area.

Service Side The building in Mechanicsville has a 40x40 indoor service shop that is almost finished being tooled after experiencing material shortages. The Traweek’s plan is to have it running full speed before the company’s grand opening July 8-10. Mike knows once the shop opens repairs

and routine maintenance will be nonstop; so he feels it is important to have everything in place. Outside will include a 20x50 enclosed space for equipment storage. “The biggest difference between the two stores is we have a very large indoor shop at our Ashland store,” he explains. “Here we have a much smaller indoor space but it’s going to have a secure outdoor area for keeping equipment safe and out of the weather.” Rob Earls will serve as Mechanicsville’s lead technician and previously worked at the Ashland location’s 7,000 sq. ft. building for several years. He holds a Stihl Gold certification as well as Cub Cadet, Kawasaki and Kohler factory certifications. The shop operates on an $80/hour rate, using OEM parts exclusively. To aid the techs in their work, the shop has a Heftee lift and Oregon chain sharpeners. The sell here, service here debate holds no weight at the Mechanicsville location. Mike says big box stores can be frustrating at times, but his team is loyal to its brands. “We will support our brands regardless of where it’s bought,” he declares. “It keeps you busy and for the good side of business it helps you earn your customers.”

Lessons Learned The Traweeks’ biggest takeaway from 2020’s effect on their business was adapting to their circumstances. The father-son pair say sales recovered nicely after understanding manufacturing delays and being able to get outside the formula of a customer walking in, purchasing equipment then leaving. “We went from ‘oh man what are we going to do about sales,’ to ‘oh man we don’t have enough people staffed,’” Mike says. “It was a big mind twist to reset our gears, keep customers happy and going out the door. Keeping the customer happy was the hardest part. Telling them we can get this micro-switch for you but it could be six days or six months.” PET 16

dential power equipment operators. Aspen fuels are alkylate-based fuels, which are among the cleanest and most stable gasoline products that can be produced. As clean high-octane gasoline, Aspen provides a much better user-experience, particularly for operators of chain saws and other handheld machines, and extends the life of power equipment. Over 30 years ago, Aspen first developed alkylate fuel in Sweden to benefit forestry workers and improve the conditions for chain saw operators who were suffering from various health problems associated with running pump gasoline. Aspen’s fuels are engineered to be virtually free of the harmful substances that are found in pump gasoline such as sulfur, benzene, toluene and other aromatic hydrocarbons. According to Ulf Augustsson, who works as a Forest Engineer with the Swedish Forest Agency, “You notice the difference immediately using alkylate fuel when operating chain saws without the headaches, and without the gasoline smell. Other than feeling better, you also notice the benefits over time of the fuel quality with your equipment and you can store the product for long periods of time, up to five years. Alkylate-based fuels have become the standard for chain saw instruction and operation here.” Aspen is increasingly becoming the choice for forestry and arborist professionals in the U.S. as well. Aspen 2 is premixed with fully-synthetic biodegradable oil and suitable for engines requiring 40:1 or 50:1 mixes. Aspen fuels offer a cleaner ethanol-free formulation that helps minimize engine corrosion and soot buildup for longer-lasting engines with less maintenance. In the U.S., Aspen Fuels are available to dealers through Oscar Wilson Engine & Parts, Power Equipment Systems, Marr Bros and John E Landis Co. Aspen fuels can be purchased in quarts, 1.3 gal. and larger pails and drums, ideal for shop or professional use.

CANNON BAR Since 1955, Cannon Bar Works has manufactured chain saw guide bars for the worldwide forest industry where only the highest quality bar stands a chance of longevity. Cannon started with one bar— the SuperBar—a chain saw bar truly made for professionals and grew their offerings from there. Cannon now manufactures a wide range of bars, including package cutting bars for

CHAINSAWannual sawmills, chain saw bars designed for narrow-kerf chain, wood carving, pruning, fire rescue, double-ended bars for chain saw milling, bars for mechanical harvesting, and more. Most recently, Cannon has introduced the Cannon DuraLite SuperBar. The DuraLite SuperBar is made from a virtually completed SuperBar. After the bar has been grooved and the rails have been flame hardened, they eliminate weight by milling out pockets on either side of the SuperBar, leaving a steel core in the center for strength. The center section is then perforated with holes. This method of construction is based on the same principal that one would see in an I-beam. Cannon then uses a special adhesive which not only bonds the steel to two flexible aluminum inserts, one on each side of the bar, but also creates a chemical bond (or weld) between the two inserts. The new DuraLite SuperBar remains ridged, durable and tough, has the same quality characteristics as the traditional SuperBar, but weighs up to 25% less! Every single Cannon bar is individually made by their skilled craftsmen and put through rigorous quality assurance checks prior to packaging. There are no exceptions to their quality standards. In fact, if a bar is not up to standards, it is scrapped. The old adage “You get what you pay for,” certainly pertains to Cannon bars. For good reason, their bars sell for approximately 15% to 30% more than some of the mass-produced bars on the market. Positive feedback from professional loggers using Cannon bars say that they will often get over three times the life out of one compared to a less expensive mass-produced bar. Cannon Bar Works’ objective has always been to provide their customers with the highest quality chain saw bars at the fairest possible price.

CHAINSAWannual VP RACING FUELS Dealers from coast to coast are benefiting from selling VP Racing Fuels 4-cycle and 2-cycle pre-mixed Small Engine fuels, additives and accessory products and creating satisfied customers in their own markets and across America. Marty McClung, owner of Western Mower & Engine just north of San Diego, says he finds out if the customer is a very occasional equipment user who most likely needs a pre-mixed fuel, or a customer who may go through a gallon of gas every two months and could use a fuel stabilizer product. “It’s a real easy approach,” McClung says: “What kind of equipment user are you?” The dealer says he also has pro customers, tree care, landscaping and construction workers who see using VP Racing Fuels products as an investment in zero fuel hassles and better engine performance. They say the cost of the fuel is nothing compared to the issues of bad fuel —many times the commercial guys buy fuel in 54 gal. drums. Across the country, in Little League-crazed Williamsport, Pa., Brian Heltman of Dave’s Repair, Service & Sales says the dealership and VP Racing Fuels are supporting the community as the current sole local source of zero ethanol fuel. The dealership moves thousands a month in VP Racing Fuels 2-cycle

pre-mix and 4-cycle fuel products. “We sell it as a solution,” says Heltman, who uses VP Racing Fuels fuel in his own equipment. “I’m a firm believer in the product.” VP Racing Fuels offers 2-cycle ethanol free small engine fuels in 40:1, 50:1 and multi-mix blends, plus a 97 Octane ProMax 50:1 premix specifically for pro chainsaws and cutoff saws or anyone who wants the best performing, cleanest burning 2 cycle fuel. Also, VP offers premium ethanol free 4-cycle fuel for mowers, generators and more. These fuels are virtually smoke-free, substantially reduce carbon deposits and meet or exceed JASO FD, ISO-EGD and API TC standards and all OEM specifications. VP Racing Fuels also offers fuel stabilizers, 2-cycle, crankcase and bar and chain oil for all power equipment needs. From one end of the U.S. to the other, customers demand both 2- and 4-cycle small engine fuel solutions, and dealers carrying VP Racing Fuels products are providing profitable answers and building a loyal customer base for their businesses with VP expanding line of quality products and 46 year history in specialty fuels.

Increasing Offline Local Sales With Free Online Tools Understanding all of the ways customers are trying to find your dealership, products and services will provide results and help lead to more sales. BY JACQLYN KIRKLAND

Y

ou might think of Google as just a search engine that displays the top 10 results. But if your dealership wants to drive local search traffic to an offline local business, you should take a closer look at what Google has to offer. According to Google, keyword searches for the phrase “local businesses” have grown by more than 80% year over year, including searches like “local businesses near me” and “support local businesses.” The COVID-19 pandemic has made buying local even more important and customers recognize that neighborhood businesses have struggled during the past year. This, in effect, has resulted in a shift from big-box stores to small businesses. “Shop local” has become more than just a slogan; it’s now a symbol of solidarity in the COVID-19 marketplace. Google Search is not the only free tool that you should utilize. Google’s parent company also owns YouTube, Google Maps and Google Images, all of which can be resources to help your dealership be more visible online for free.

YouTube YouTube was not always thought of as a way to drive local business sales. But that has changed since Google acquired

the video-sharing platform in 2006. Since then, YouTube has grown to become one of the world’s largest search engines, second only in size to Google. Since Google now includes YouTube videos in search results, the platform presents your dealership with a massive opportunity to reach more people. Short videos about your business can provide useful information for searchers who need to know more about your dealership or a specific product. According to data, 45% of viewers say they watch product demos on YouTube before buying.

Google Maps Just like YouTube, Google Maps is another place people are increasingly turning to in order to find local businesses. This trend highlights the importance of claiming your dealership’s free Google My Business account, which in turn enables you to monitor your Google Map listing and update contact information, business hours and location. Google My Business provides yet another platform to post information about your dealership, demo videos, images of new products and interact with customers.

Google My Business Taking advantage of the free website builder connected to your Google My Business account will also help your dealership stand out in related local searches. You should think of Google Maps as another search engine, just as important as Google itself.

Google Images Another key component to drive more offline sales is Google Images. Businesses that add images to their Google My Business account receive 42% more requests for directions to their location on Google Maps.

High-quality, engaging images help brand a business and make it easier to remember. Scientific research shows that an image can influence a person’s emotions in a positive manner, which enhances the marketing message. The right photo of your dealership could make all the difference. People often use Google to search for written content, but they also look for visual content through Google Images. Before you upload an image to your website or Google My Business account you need to optimize your images. Just like with the text version of Google Search, images are ranked based on image search engine optimization (SEO). Here are three basic steps to optimizing images: Edit your image file names to reflect the content. For example, if your image shows the Rotary Copperhead Six-Pack, then your file name should be “rotary-copperhead-six-pack.jpg.” Modify your image’s ALT tags, which should be an accurate description of the image. Back to the Rotary example: The ALT tag would simply be “Rotary Copperhead Six-Pack.” Compress your images. Ideally, you want your images to be as large as possible but take up as little storage space as possible. There are free online tools to help with this task. There are many more free digital marketing tools and resources available. One of the best resources is the “Think with Google” website, which provides insights into best practices, in-depth analysis and digital marketing tools for businesses large and small. PET

Where’s Your Head Moving Forward? SAM STEARNS

Sam looks at what the future might hold and wonders if it is time for optimism or pessimism.

W

ell, we’ve somehow gotten through spring, and now we’re thinking ahead to chain saw weather. But before we get there, we’ve got a summer to try to capitalize on. Is everyone optimistic about this summer? Many of us power equipment dealers have had relatively strong sales so far this season, which is great! Will that continue through the summer? Several of us, even though customer demand has been there, have suffered from not being able to simply get the equipment into enough customers’ ready hands. As far as I can tell, product availability is one of the biggest question marks going forward into the summer. Are we going to start catching up after a troublesome spring as people are getting back to work? Sounds reasonable! Or perhaps it seems more likely that instead of catching up, we’re going to fall further behind because the supply chain won’t be able to ramp up quickly enough to match customer demand, and our showrooms are going to be getting emptier and emptier. How will it work out this summer? And how will all this affect the fall selling season? Maybe you have optimism about the industry that gives you a Cheshire Cat grin and puts a spring in your step as you dream about truckloads of equipment and parts to fill your inventory. Or maybe you’re more on the Eeyore end of the spectrum, not expecting much (or any) improvement. To be upfront, this is where I find myself, and I tend to shake my head at all the “rah-rah” people saying it’s going to be great. Wherever we find ourselves on this optimism/ pessimism continuum, however, we should probably also remember that

precious few of us actually know how it’s going to play out and display a little humility when we’re talking about these things. Furthermore, we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be distracted by our various predictions about how our industry or the economy as a whole is going to go. If you’re pessimistic about it, you may be

Congress (PPE Congress) and Small Engine Repair Business Growth Strategies. Also, consider visiting Louisville, Ky., from October 20-22, as the GIE+EXPO is back this year! Last but not least, I’d urge you to look up and consider partnering with the good folks at Bob Clements International (BCI), if you haven’t already. They’ve been a

Opportunity is there, even if the ways we’re accustomed to doing business aren’t looking so good. tempted to give up to a degree and not have a lot of enthusiasm about the future of your business. Wait a minute! You’re not defeated! When certain doors close, we look for other ones that are open— and if we don’t see any we’ll make our own! As I’ve said many times before, successful businesses are the ones that know how to adapt to changing market conditions. Opportunity is there, even if the ways we’re accustomed to doing business aren’t looking so good. And if you’re optimistic about our situation, you may be tempted not to make provisions for the possibility that things will play out differently from what you’re hoping. We can’t allow ourselves to be blindsided by adverse market conditions! I’ll bet that none of you are expecting to have a fire in your dealership today, but I guarantee you have a fire extinguisher there and you know where it is in case you need it. So how do we adapt to changing market conditions like materials and/or labor shortages, or prepare for a soft economy, a recession, or even a depression? I’m a pretty simple guy, and I don’t have nearly all the answers for these types of questions, so my ears are open. I think we’d all do well to network with and learn from each other. There are a couple of Facebook groups that I invite you to join if you haven’t already: Professional Power Equipment

fantastic resource for many of us in the power equipment, ag and powersports industries! Many of us in this industry think that debt is a necessary part of growing any business. I’ll just say emphatically: Not true! Debt may be serviceable enough in prosperous times, when nothing goes wrong. But there’s no shortage of stories out there where business people did the “smart” thing and used other people’s money to grow their business with a “can’t fail” plan, and then something unforeseen happened and they became unable to pay back the debt. Just as driving down the road at 100 MPH decreases your options when someone pulls out in front of you, having debt reduces your ability and freedom to adapt to market or economic conditions. I know many of you have businesses with an uncomfortable level of debt, and you’re working to bring that down. Keep working at it! Free yourself! The less debt we have, the better chance we have of surviving and even thriving in the midst of a severe economic downturn. What helpful ideas do you all have that would benefit other dealers in our PET industry? Sam Stearns owns and operates Mr. Mowerman, Scottsburg, IN 47170; e-mail mr.mowerman@hotmail.com.
