T
he Panel & Engineered Lumber International Conference & Expo (PELICE) is held every other year in Atlanta, Ga. and is the only event of its kind that brings together participants from both the structural (plywood, OSB, engineered lumber) and non-structural (MDF, particleboard, laminates) segments of the worldwide panel industry. Panel World magazine will again host the event, which will be held April 7-8 at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center Grand Ballroom North. And that’s why the issue of the magazine before you is given over to the PELICE Preview. Obviously one purpose of the PELICE Preview is to provide you the timeline agenda of the speakers, especially the eight keynoters. I think you will agree that the agenda is the best PELICE has had since its inception in 2008. Topics such as Adhesives, Air Emissions Control, New Technologies, Safety and Operations Planning are always big; there’s also a panel discussion on China that involves panelists who “know” the China wood products industry because they spend a lot of time there. Discussions at PELICE always turn to mill projects and certainly several keynoters and their companies are in the middle of huge ones. These speakers will be providing updates. A few of the projects—the new Swanson Group plywood mill in Oregon, the new Winston Veneer and Plywood mill in Mississippi, and the new Proteak MDF plant in Mexico—will be starting up about the same time their people address the PELICE audience. How cool is that? Some nervousness could be in the air. Another purpose of the PELICE Preview is to recognize the equipment and supplier companies who have already filled the available booth space in the Grand Ballroom North. Seventy-eight companies have signed on as either Gold, Silver or Bronze sponsors. In addition to showing their technologies at
their booths, many of them are making presentations on new developments and projects involving their technologies. These are truly cut-to-the-chase presentations. Our exhibitors at PELICE have been around long enough to know that if their talks slip into fairly mindless promotion that the audience full of producer personnel tends to drift out of the meeting room. PELICE has always put a lot of stock in allowing vendors to make presentations. So much of the technology originates with them and is enhanced because of them. It would be foolhardy to exclude them. The final purpose of the PELICE Preview issue is to allow you to take a few moments to read through this issue of Panel World. I think you’ll come to the conclusion, if you haven’t already, that you need to attend the fifth PELICE and get to “the heart of the matter.” Of course it’s not all business; there are several food and beverage events and the “camaraderie” will be flying. Visit www.pelice-expo.com to register, or just e-mail me—rich@hatton brown.com— and I’ll get you on your PW way.

UPDATE THIRD TP&EE WILL BE THE LARGEST Organizers of the third Timber Processing & Energy Expo announced that indoor exhibit space is 98% sold out. Some space remains outside. Hosted by Timber Processing and Panel World magazines, and produced by HattonBrown Expositions, TP&EE will be held September 28-30 at the Portland Exposition Center in Portland, Ore. Sold-out exhibitor space in 2014, a waiting list, and generally cramped quarters prompted organizers to move the 2016 event into a larger adjacent hall on the fairgrounds. “Hall E (108,000 sq. ft.) this year is a third larger than Hall D (72,000 sq. ft.) was in 2014, so we should be able meet most exhibitor demands,” comments Rich Donnell, Show Director and Editor-inChief at Hatton-Brown Publishers, Inc. The 2014 event featured 170 exhibitors who displayed their equipment
and technologies to 1,700 industry producer personnel, representing 140 wood products companies and hundreds of lumber, veneer/plywood and engineered wood products mill operations. The event also continues to attract an international audience, with 22 countries represented. In addition, 1,000 exhibitor personnel were on hand.
TP&EE 2016 is moving into a larger venue on the same grounds.
Donnell adds that while there will be a marginal increase in the number of exhibitors, the difference is that many exhibitors have increased their booth space to be able to display more machinery and equipment. “There’s no doubt there’s considerable project planning in the mills going on because our editors in the field hear about it, and our surveys indicate the same,” Donnell says. “If the housing market gains steam even beyond its current slow advancement, nobody wants to be caught short. Throw in the fact that it’s an election year, and we’re bound to have an exciting event with a lot of buzz to it.” The 2016 TP&EE will again include two workshop days that focus on a range of lumber, plywood and engineered wood products technologies. More than 200 people attended the workshops in 2014. Attendee online registration opens May 1.

UPDATE
BOISE CASCADE DIGS INTO EWP
Boise Cascade Co. is purchasing Georgia-Pacific LLC’s engineered lumber production facilities at Thorsby, Ala., and Roxboro, NC for $215 million. “We are pleased to be expanding our engineered wood products business and
positioning ourselves to support customers as the U.S. housing recovery continues in the years ahead,” states Tom Corrick, CEO of Boise Cascade. The Thorsby facility produces laminated veneer lumber (LVL). The Roxboro facility produces I-joists. Roxboro’s LVL production assets are currently idled. Boise Cascade expects to invest capi-
tal and hire additional employees to increase production at these mills in 2016 and beyond to obtain significant logistics benefits as well as to meet expected growth in new residential construction. The company states the addition of Thorsby and Roxboro will increase LVL billet capacity by 9 million cubic feet and I-joist capacity by 80 million lineal feet.
SWISS KRONO PLANS NEW HDF MILL Swiss Krono Group, one of the world’s leading producers of engineered wood products, and its American subsidiary, Swiss Krono LLC (formerly Kronotex USA), announced the planned expansion of its existing operations in Barnwell County, South Carolina with an investment of $230 million to build a high-density fiberboard (HDF) mill and expand its laminate flooring production. This expansion will allow Swiss Krono LLC to produce 300,000 m3 of HDF per year, which the company will use for laminate flooring manufacturing operations and sell to furniture, cabinet, fixture, door and other woodbased manufacturers. In total, the project will increase the company’s annual laminate flooring capacity by an additional 8 million m2. Preliminary engineering has been completed and construction is expected to start by mid-2016, with HDF operations to begin by the summer of 2018. Once completed, this expansion will increase Swiss Krono LLC’s Barnwell County workforce to 275. The Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved job development credits, as well as a $1 million Rural Infrastructure Fund grant to Barnwell County to assist with the costs of real property improvements related to the project. Meanwhile the name change was made to reflect the parent company name and the Swiss heritage in woodworking and precision technology. Operations in all eight countries where Swiss Krono operates are changing their name. According to Ines Kaindl, President of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Krono Group, headquartered in Lucerne, Switzerland, “We want to leverage a strong, uniform brand to spotlight our tradition and history while 8 • MARCH 2016 • PanelWorld

UPDATE making a greater international impact. This will enable us to help shape the market’s future.” Also, Swiss Krono LLC announced the appointment of Zeb Portanova as President and CEO. Portanova succeeds Norman Voss, who has served as KronotexUSA interim CEO since March 2014. Voss will remain with the company as a Member of the Board of Direc-
tors and continue to be actively involved in future expansion, investment, and raw material sourcing activities for KronotexUSA. Portanova held a variety of leadership positions at Eli Lilly and Co. and other nonprofit and for-profit companies. He has an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, a Masters in Public Policy from the Kennedy
School of Government at Harvard University, and a Bachelors Degree from the University of Florida.
NORBORD WILL UPGRADE INVERNESS Norbord is planning a £95 million ($138 million) investment in its Inverness, Scotland OSB mill. The investment will upgrade the mill to continuous press technology and nearly double its production capacity, positioning it to meet growing demand for OSB in markets across the United Kingdom and Europe, as well as securing the long-term future of its employees and the indirect jobs it provides across the region. “Demand for OSB is increasing rapidly and this investment will ensure we can continue to meet customers’ needs and remain at the forefront of the European industry,” says Karl Morris, Managing Director, Norbord Europe and a Senior Vice President of the company. “Our SterlingOSB product manufactured in Inverness is the UK’s leading OSB brand, and with direct road, rail and port access the reinvested mill will be in an even better position to efficiently serve our customers across the UK and in continental Europe.” Built in the early 1980s, the Inverness mill—at Morayhill, on the outskirts of the city—was the first in Europe to manufacture OSB, and was also the first OSB plant in Europe to receive Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation. The expanded mill, which Norbord expects to come on-line in the second half of 2017, with no disruption to production in the interim, will continue its commitment to sustainability, including generating its own heat energy from the biomass wood residue that is a byproduct of the production process.

PELICE 2016 EXHIBITORS SEE BUSY SCHEDULES, SOLID PROSPECTS FOR MORE IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS Vendors are seeing a lot of interest in panel industry capital investments and hope the planning comes to fruition during PELICE. BY DAN SHELL
M
achinery manufacturers and suppliers exhibiting at the 2016 Panel & Engineered Lumber International Conference & Expo (PELICE) April 7-8 in Atlanta report solid current business conditions and good future prospects, despite markets and prices in many panel industry product categories retrenching somewhat after playing “catch-up” coming off the nearunprecedented downturn of almost a decade ago. And while the production gain of 1.2% in 2015 was minimal, North American structural panel production is still coming off its fourth straight year of production increases, according to APA—The Engineered Wood Assn. The 31 billion SF in structural panel production in North America in 2015 included 20.3 billion SF for OSB and 10.7 billion BF for plywood. OSB output in 2015 increased for the sixth straight year, and Canada’s 1.9 billion SF in plywood production was the largest there since 2011. Meanwhile the composite panel industry in North America shipped 5.398MMSF of particleboard and MDF in 2015, an increase of 3% over 2014. These production increases are accompanied by a housing market that has im-

proved rapidly and almost doubled during the past five years. Final total of U.S. housing starts for the year 2015 was 1.11 million units, according to APA, an 11% increase over 2014—and an 82% increase since 2011’s housing start level of 611,000 units. Single-family starts accounted for more than 715,000, up 10.4%. Driven by a surge in multifamily starts in the second half of 2015, Canada totaled 198,184 units, up close to 5%. APA calls for U.S. housing starts to increase to 1.25 million in 2016 and 1.38 million in 2017, a forecast which is on par with several other forecasting groups. Panel producers in all segments of the industry have responded to improving markets with investments in new capacity, including improvements to existing facilities and even greenfield projects. The largest North American projects soon to come on-line later this year include new plywood plants in Mississippi and Oregon, both rebuilds following their respective tornado and fire disasters in 2014: l Winston Plywood in Louisville, Miss. features two lathes, three dryers, three presses and a layup line, much of it supplied by USNR. The 440MMSF annual production plant is scheduled to start up in spring 2016 and advance to more than 500MMSF with the eventual startup of a fourth press. l The Swanson Group plywood plant
in Springfield, Ore. is installing a Meinan state-of-the-art triple-spindle peeling system, two dryers and a layup line, plus related systems for premium overlay production. The plant is scheduled for a soft startup the first half of 2016, with plans to be in production by early fall. l Meanwhile, the new Martco OSB plant at Corrigan, Tex., (Corrigan OSB), is installing the company’s second Dieffenbacher OSB press line, and is scheduled for a 2017 startup. l South of the border, Proteak is starting up its new MDF plant in southern Mexico (PELICE 2016 visitors are in for a special treat with up-to-the-minute presentations on the Winston Plywood, Swanson Group, Martco OSB and Proteak projects delivered by their respective representatives.) Another major project—but a couple of years out—is Arauco North America’s $325 million investment to build the largest continuous press particleboard mill in North America in Grayling, Mich. The new mill is scheduled to produce 424MMSF annually and includes full lamination capabilities. Construction is set to begin in late 2016, with startup scheduled for the latter part of 2018. Also just announced is Swiss Krono LLC’s $230 million investment in a new HDF line at its laminate flooring complex in Barnwell, SC. And for each major project ➤ 70

PELICE KEYNOTERS IN PURSUIT OF PERFECTION —Jonathan Martin, Chairman and CEO, Martin Companies LLC As Martco embarked on the design and construction of its newest OSB plant in Corrigan, Texas, its 34-year history of being in the structural panel business was relied on to select the site, the engineers, the equipment and the design. Design criteria included the following: priority on safety, health and the environmental aspects of the design; facility aesthetics designed to sustain Martco’s “employer of choice” goals in the community; design is for long-term “lowest possible product cost” to compete in a commodity business; design has to be constructed within the capital budget; an use only proven equipment, reliable suppliers and contractor and design engineers.
WHY BUILD A PLYWOOD MILL IN 2016? —Steve Swanson, President and CEO, Swanson Group The construction of Swanson’s Springfield, Ore. mill will mark only the second plywood mill built over the past 40 years in the American West. Mills like these aren’t built from the ground-up anymore because of the immense costs. So why did Swanson elect to rebuild rather than renovate an existing structure? Primarily because the Springfield site presented a number of intangible benefits too valuable to ignore: immediate access to a quality timber source, a proven, experienced workforce well-versed with Swanson’s plywood manufacturing, and the opportunity to build one of the most advanced specialty plywood plants in North America. Set to open in April, Swanson’s new mill will operate better than ever thanks to significant manufacturing advancements and state-of-the-art equipment and technology—some of which appear almost nowhere else in the country.
BUILDING FROM DISASTER —Kurt Liebich, CEO, RedBuilt, New Wood Resources In early 2014, Winston Veneer and Plywood was formed with the purchase of an idled veneer and plywood mill in Louisville, Miss. Less than 30 days later, the mill found itself in the direct path of an EF-4 tornado and was completely destroyed. Kurt Liebich, the CEO of Winston’s parent, New Wood Resources, discusses the unique public/private partnership that has emerged over the past two years to rebuild a state-of-the-art plywood mill for the city of Louisville and Winston County, the key decisions that were made along the way, and the unique capabilities of this facility.
INNOVATION AS A WINNING STRATEGY —Brian Carlson, President, Huber Engineered Woods LLC Product and process innovation serve as excellent sources of competitive advantage, differentiation, and market diversification. It is also one of the better core strategies used to maximize shareholder value in all markets today. While the panel industry has a long history of innovation success, the general commodity nature of the markets may at times limit innovative thinking. A deep commitment and significant investment is required to win as an innovative company; however, the rewards can be significant and should be carefully considered in any strategic assessment on how one plans to compete in a given market. 18 • MARCH 2016 • PanelWorld

AIR EMISSION CONTROL TECHNOLOGY TRENDS IN THE WOOD PANELBOARD AND ENGINEERED LUMBER INDUSTRY: A SUPPLIER’S PERSPECTIVE —Rodney Schwartz, Vice President of Sales, B&W MEGTEC B&W MEGTEC has been active in the wood panelboard and engineered lumber industry for more than 15 years, supplying air abatement technologies to a long list of major producers. Its experience gained from the “early years” working hand in hand with producer partners has allowed it the unique opportunity to garner a wide range of technical and practical knowledge. The timing of its entrance into the market allowed it the ability to understand what had been done (both good and bad), test and evaluate alternatives, and offer new and unique options for producers. In its quest for the right solutions, B&W MEGTEC studied the process of making wood-based products with its customers in an effort to understand how its environmental solutions impacted producers and the making of their products. B&W MEGTEC used this knowledge to expand its technology offerings, from VOC abatement to particulate control and gas cleaning, always keeping customer requirements as its guiding force.
REASON FOR OPTIMISM IN NORTH AMERICAN COMPOSITE WOOD INDUSTRY —Jackson Morrill, President, Composite Panel Assn. As we emerge from the “Great Recession,” there are a number of positive developments shaping the North American composite wood industry today. There have been notable announcements of expansions in production and even new mills coming on-line. There is true innovation going on in the thermally fused laminate and decorative surfaces markets that are providing new opportunities in a host of applications. The industry is nearing a time when it will have a national formaldehyde emissions regulation in place in the U.S., while at the same time Mexico and Canada are making moves to implement similar standards. The industry’s sustainability message is strong, particularly in a more carbon-conscious environment. Acknowledging that challenges and potential new issues certainly remain on the horizon, there is reason for optimism in the North American composite wood industry.
GLOBAL WOOD-BASED PANELS MARKETS: TRENDS AND OUTLOOK —Dr. George Goroyias, Senior Principal, Pöyry Management Consulting During the past decade, the global particleboard and MDF sectors have grown but regional dynamics have changed—traditional markets have faced challenges and emerging regions have strengthened their position. Pöyry has been working within the global wood-based panels sector for decades and provides a point of view on the regional dynamics, demand drivers, supply and demand and investment needs for the global particleboard and MDF sectors.
WHY PROTEAK? HOW AN ENTREPRENEUR BECAME INVOLVED IN MEXICO’S NEWEST MDF OPERATION —Luis Tejado, President, Blue Drop Mexico is a country with a vast and deep forestry history, but changes made during the revolution (early 1900s) altered the dynamics of the industry. Consequently, Mexico imports increased to $6 billion USD of wood and paper products, including the import of more than a half million cubic meters of MDF. Today, after more than 20 years of several efforts to close the loop of high yield plantations (in the tropical southeast of Mexico) and the first successful industrialization effort done in Mexico (MDF plant), the pattern is changing. This has required a commitment from the forestry side but with the strategic partnership in the industrial side as well. PanelWorld • MARCH 2016 • 19

ARGOS The new Argos Grading System (AGS) is a powerful and effective system for automating the inspection of all types of surface defects in decorative surfaces. The system is designed to handle all panel sizes from small furniture components to full size panels. The Argos system generates multiple images from the panel using different light sources in different angels and direction. The different images, captured from the panel, are all processed based on being captured within the same panel. This eliminates the risk of false detection because of transportation inaccuracy. The AGS design is modular and flexible and can be retrofitted to most decorative lines with only mini- Argos specializes in grading and panel repair technologies. mal modifications. l The Argos Panel Repair System is a fast and accurate repair system for plywood and other wood panels. The system can easily be configured to perform many different repair tasks like routing, face-putty and two-component fillers like polyurethane and epoxy. BAUMER INSPECTION The German company Baumer Inspection has installed more than 500 scanners for the wood based panel industry during the last 15 years. At the last Ligna 2015 in Hannover, Germany, Baumer Inspection showed for the first time a new generation of board inspection systems—focused upon the optimization of lamination in short cycle press lines. The new generation MFC4.0 provides better detection of all defects; classification of all defects and the data base system Q-brain for statistical quality analysis; easy to use interface for operators. l The new MFC4.0 is equipped with 14 cameras in total, seven from top and seven from bottom. These cameras are designed and produced by Baumer Inspection to optimize performance for sensitivity and resolution. The 14 cameras are equipped for four different illumination modules for top and another four for bottom side inspection. Baumer Inspection’s MFC4.0 for short cycle press lines The core module is the new “brilliance module,” designed for reliable detection of resin spots, resin streaks and all defects related to decors with a deep embossing. The new software algorithms of MFC4.0 also check the position of the paper, the color of the décor and all different flaws which can be seen on furniture boards. l Target of MFC4.0 is to classify all defect types and give information about their root cause. With Q-brain, all defects detected are classified in groups regarding possible origin in the press process. For all those different kind of process related defects, alarms can be generated to prevent mass production of rejects to optimize production and resources. Q-live, a data base system for statistics, will assist to find hot spots in production. It is also possible to link all information gathered in different production lines to production management systems. l A lot of scanners show sub optimal performance because of poor settings. Baumer Inspection has designed a new and very easy to operate user interface. Images of defects and their position on the board are shown by one touch on the screen. Statistics provide information about the frequency of defects and help to analyze and optimize the press process. Within the last year, Baumer Inspection received orders for more than 10 MFC4.0 systems. This success shows that Baumer Inspection touched the right buttons of the panel producers. The first system in North America is being installed and will be fully operative during March 2016. Baumer Inspection will offer more information about this installation during PELICE. DIEFFENBACHER Containers for transporting goods on ships or trains are subjected to high loads. Enormous forces act on the structure during loading or lifting. The container floor is the most important part. It bears the largest load, particularly when lifting the container. They are generally subjected to uneven loads. The surface is also exposed to high friction when loading and unloading with forklift trucks. Up to 5500 loading and unloading cycles in the course of a container floor’s service life are not uncommon. Nowadays, plywood is mostly used as a container floor material. The material is perfect, as it is flexible to a certain extent and does not easily dent. In recent years it has become increasingly difficult to produce robust plywood floors economically. Fewer and fewer of the slow-growing hardwoods are available for producing high-quality veneer layers. For this reason, manufacturers of container floors have been Kangxin New Material Science & Technology Stock Co. Ltd. in Hanchuan searching for economical and sustainable alternatives City in Hubei Province produced the world’s first OSB panel for containers for a few years. Various attempts have been made on a Dieffenbacher press. using bamboo and also plastics. Dieffenbacher is taking a different route. The panel core consists of a high-density OSB board made from sustainably grown poplar wood. This is firmly pressed with several cover layers of veneer. Numerous tests were conducted in Dieffenbacher laboratories to achieve the required extreme strength in high-density OSB panels. Many factors had to be taken into account, such as orientation during spreading, glue composition and pressing pressures. The final result is a special multilayer spreading with very precise alignment of the longitudinal and traverse strands, pressed into a high-density panel. The panel is then given several cover layers of veneer to achieve its final strength. Learn more about this development and others from Dieffenbacher at PELICE. Visit dieffenbacher.de. Since production rate, glue usage, energy savings, veneer recovery, and improved veneer quality are directly related to the average veneer MC exiting the dryer, it makes sense to base veneer dryer control on the average veneer MC exiting the dryer. It is estimated that increases in veneer production of approximately 12% and energy savings of at least 7% may be realized by using this new Delta T System. In addition, air content inside-the-dryer should not be removed to reduce thermal energy losses. To the contrary, it should be continuously sensed and controlled to the optimum value that increases the mass transfer and energy transfer driving forces for drying, thus increasing veneer production rate by approximately 3.5%, the value of which outweighs energy savings by removing air. For those mills maxed out on steam, the Delta T offers the opportunity to increase veneer production by reducing MC variation at least 30%. This allows the dryer to be speeded up until the target MC is increased 1% without exceeding the old established control limit, thus producing about 4.5% production increase without using additional steam. In addition, the higher veneer MC will require less glue. Finally, redry will be given a part, not in the short run, but in the long run by use of an optimization algorithm that predicts the optimum redry rate that maximizes production (outer redry loop). ELECTRONIC WOOD SYSTEMS Electronic Wood Systems is an innovative hightech company in the field of quality control systems for the wood panel industry and in the field of spark extinguishing systems. The company operates internationally and cooperates with worldwide partners. The factory, including its research and development and manufacturing, is located in Hamelin (Germany). Sales consulting and service center for the U.S. and Canada is EWS North America, Beaverton, Ore. Electronic Wood Systems recently introduced significant technical improvements of Quality Control Measuring Systems for the wood panel industry and a new spark detection and extinguishing system. The new area-weight gauge Mass-Scan X MultiEnergy, which is based on x-ray technology, Electronic Wood Systems workshop in Hamelin, Germany uses a unique detector and a selection of filters to reach unmatched measuring accuracy. The system measures the fiber mat before the hot press. In addition, the company highlights its new continuous and non-contact panel scale Conti-Scale X, which also is based on x-ray technology. This system is intended to be installed after the hot press. It not only evaluates the scale weight, but also the areaweight distribution of the finished panel. Only a space of 330 mm (13 in.) in the conveyor is required for installation. Another innovation is the addition of an air jet device (AirKnife) to the blow detection systems. The AirKnife stabilizes the ultrasonic sound of the blow detector which results in a much more objective analysis of panel property changes and early warning functions. “All new features are already proven and successfully in operation in wood panel plants,” Keith Mays, Vice President of EWS North America LLC, reports. FIREFLY The wood panel industry has been experiencing problems with fire and dust explosions for many years, and as production increases, so does the fire and explosion risks. Examples of high-risk areas in a board factory are dryers, dryer cyclones, screens, mills, wind sifters, silos, line extraction, sanding, saws and presses. Dangerous sparks and hot particles can be generated in the process and cause fires and dust explosions, which can lead to loss of revenue as well as major damage to the production line and machinery. In worst case, it can lead to injuries or even loss of human life. With more than 40 years of experience, Firefly supplies fire prevention systems to the wood panel industry and has developed several tailor-made protection solutions of the highest technical standard, adapted to the main risks areas in the panel production process. l Firefly PressGuard: It is well-known in the wood panel industry that a fire in a press spreads extremely quickly. A small flame can, in just a couple of seconds, develop into a large-scale press fire with devastating consequences and losses. Firefly PressGuard installation Combustible material (wood fibers, dust etc.), oxygen and ignition sources (often generated due to friction) are always present in and around a press. Considering that these are the parameters needed to start a fire, the question to be asked would not be if a fire will occur in a continuous press, but rather when. The Firefly PressGuard system is built upon a combination of fast IR-radiation detection and flame detection, suitable for usage in different areas of a press, to ensure the best possible accuracy and reaction time. To extinguish the Firefly water mist suppression system uses a lower amount of water to minimize secondary damage and losses. l Firefly SanderGuard: The fine dust generated by a sanding machine can, when ignited, give rise to severe dust explosions and rapid spread of fire. Firefly’s SanderGuard system solution is designed for all types of sanders. It includes quick flame detection inside the sanding machine and water mist suppression, providing optimal protection of this important link in the production chain. Visit firefly.se. FLAMEX Flamex Inc. is a leading supplier of customized industrial process fire prevention and protection equipment. Flamex specializes in the protection of facilities that handle combustible dusts that utilize pneumatic dust collection and air filtration systems. Capabilities include design, supply, installation, repair and service of complete protection systems. To combat the common problem of dust collector fires and explosions, Flamex pioneered the use of a new technology in North America by introducing the Flamex Spark Detection and Extinguishing System in 1977. It soon became the first system of its type to gain a Factory Mutual Approval. Since that time, thousands of Flamex systems have been installed in numerous industries across North America and beyond. The Flamex display at PELICE will feature the MINIFOG Press Protection System, which is a well- recognized defense against fires that develop in wood composite board presses. Dust collector explosion The MINIFOG System provides an effective method of early detection of developing fires and initiates suppression by water mist in the affected areas of the press. Specially designed nozzles emit very fine droplets of water which provide the advantage of a very efficient absorption of heat. Most of the small water droplets evaporate in the fire and expand their volume of 1,600 times when turned to steam. This causes a suffocating effect on the fire in addition to the cooling effect of the heat absorption. The result is rapid suppression that minimizes both fire and water damage to the press. The size of the MINIFOG water droplets are ideal for suppression of fires where oils and other flammable liquids are present. The droplets are large enough to penetrate a fire plume but are small enough not to break the surface tension of an oil pool. Activation of the system can be automatic upon detection by a flame or heat detector, electrical push button or by manual release. Currently there are more than 200 presses worldwide that are protected by the MINIFOG system. Visit sparkdetection.com. Booth 304 (Bronze Sponsor) 38 • MARCH 2016 • PanelWorld

VENTEK Ventek Inc. and Elite Automation Ltd. Multi-Point Diverter System (MPDS1) helps green end automation become reality rather than just wishful thinking. Using data provided by the NV4g (veneer grade & defect scanning system), the system can precisely track and sort trash into the haul back and divert fishtail/random onto the trays. The MPDS does away with the tipple section and the cumbersome transition to multiple trays by loading each tray from discrete divert points, precisely placing random and fishtail onto the trays. l Improved random/fishtail recovery—By eliminating trash from the green chain pullers don’t have to sort through pile-ups to pull good veneer. Also provides increased capacity on the trays. Ventek multi-point diverter system Providing the green chain with a slower, constant flow of material eliminates stopping the green chain to sort through veneer or in some cases letting good veneer go in the haul back. l Reduce sheet width variance—As the peel gets into solid ribbon the system has control of the veneer and is maintaining a constant speed eliminating clipping errors due to changing speeds and or the ribbon changing position. Reducing sheet width variance allows the user to reduce sheet width set point, improving overall recovery. l Reduction in downtime—A substantial amount of downtime is associated with plug ups at the diverter, tipple and stacker due to random pieces of veneer being caught up in these areas. The MPDS system all but eliminates these issues. l Increased production—Due to the nature of the green chain it is either “all or nothing.” Periods of excess veneer at the green chain followed by nothing. Eliminating trash at the diverter along with proper loading of the trays results in less load on the trays, and a constant flow (slower) at the green chain allowing for increased speed at the clipper. l Reduction of manpower—Decreased material (no trash) at the green chain coupled with the ability to decrease green chain speed substantially results in less manpower needed The NV4g is Ventek’s 4th generation veneer scanning system using the latest in machine vision technology. Specialized camera and lighting provides the greatest separation between good wood and defects i.e. wane vs. stain. In addition to traditional veneer clipping strategies the NV4g enables users to customize clipping algorithms based on their unique processing needs and or product mix. Visit ventek.com. MEINAN Meinan will present its newest automated lathe technology—a veneer peeling line manufactured for Swanson Group’s new plywood plant in Springfield, Ore. with the following features: —higher full sheet recovery —automatic knife changer —automatic stacking by moisture sort —direct inline green composing of fishtails and random to eliminate manual labor at the green chain —increased dryer coverage —lower production costs –superior veneer quality Unlike conventional spindle-driven lathes, Meinan’s lathe uses a series of powered spiked discs located directly across from the knife and a unique backup roll system to provide the driving force along the log’s circumference. These components enable extremely accurate veneer thickness from a wide range of log diameters. The backup roll system enhances the nose bar pressure to minimize lathe checks. Since there is the same amount of driving force as there is resistance from the knife, both forces balance each other, eliminating spin-outs or logs breaking up. This allows easy peeling of logs of varying quality or those that usually require conditioning, with superior veneer quality. Since 1953 Meinan has stood for innovation and process and efficiency improvement. OPTWARE SOLUTIONS Optware Solutions offers a robust line of linear-programming-based models for your forest products business. It has developed individual models for plywood, OSB, LVL, composite panels and lumber. It provides solutions to optimize logistics, raw material, manufacturing process, and product mix. Profit improvements from these models often range from 2-5% of sales. Most companies in the wood products industry utilize some form of planning process. Business planning tends to fall into two camps: financial planning (budgeting) and log mix/product mix planning. Profit optimization technology allows you to combine planning processes in a single system. Optimized production planning and scheduling assures that the manufacturing resources are used to their full potential. Optimization systems can provide insights as to where to reduce manufacturing costs and target opportunities to improve efficiencies and reduce costs. Managers looking to improve business processes should not ignore the importance of planning and the impact on cost control and profitability. Optimization modeling can provide practical insights as to the impact of log mix on a mill. Wood is almost always the largest cost item on the income statement. The value that is generated from a specific log type can vary tremendously by manufacturing facility. Processing rates can also vary substantially by facility. The total cash impact is a combination of log cost, product value and productivity. Optimized product mix assures that the market resources are used to their full potential and matched with manufacturing capabilities. Product mix is often fertile ground for profit improvements. Anyone who has worked in the plywood business knows that there is a great deal of inherent complexity in the mill. One can’t evaluate product mix without considering veneer peel options and grade balancing issues as well as panel constructions and bottlenecks. Optimized order assignment can bring a lot of value in a multi-plant environment. There are many considerations such as raw material availability, production capacity, manufacturing capabilities, manufacturing costs, product recipes, panel grade yields, customer requirements and the like. Freight savings through the use of optimization can range into millions of dollars per year. Optware Solutions helps you determine the best operating strategy for your business. Visit optware.com. PALLMANN Pallmann Group, one of the world’s largest developers and producers of innovative size reduction technologies, has upgraded its service center for North American customers, located just outside Charlotte, North Carolina. Pallmann, which produces machines and systems in different locations around the world for the wood processing, plastics, pharmaceutical, chemical and general recycling industries, can now locally repair and rebuild even bigger wear parts from its various ranges in North America. Costs and turnaround times are considerably reduced. “We are now in a position to recondition even bigger wear parts at the Charlotte service center,” says Rolf Gren, General Manager, Pallmann Industries USA. “All our customers in the USA, Canada and Mexico can benefit from the advantages that this upgrade provides. Our customers in the wood industry are especially thankful for the fast and accurate service we now can provide.” Pallmann recommends that PZU knife rings are thoroughly checked for wear or possible damage at least every two years. Depending on its condition, a rebuild maybe necessary. Until now, that has required shipping the ring back to Pallmann’s main manufacturing plant in Zweibrucken, Germany. “Now the work can be done just as well here in Charlotte, more quickly, and without the transatlantic freight costs,” adds Gren. “We have a dedicated team of factory trained service technicians permanently stationed here.” To keep repair times to a minimum, Pallmann offers users of its PZU Pallmann finished ring repair strander a special rebuild package, under which the knife ring is first inspected while still in the strander, three months prior to the scheduled knife ring change. Any required spare parts are shipped to the Charlotte service center ahead of time, so that once the ring arrives, work can start work immediately. Founded in 1903 as an engineering works, Pallmann is a medium-sized family-owned enterprise that has a history covering seven generations of millers and millwrights. PRICE LOGPRO Price LogPro, in addition to its Log Trimmer series of merchandiser systems for plywood and OSB applications, has developed a number of new products due to the ever increasing desire to better utilize small wood diameters for engineered wood products. Recent engineering changes have been made to make its drum systems more flexible and process fiber more efficiently. The two most significant upgrades come to the design of the debarking shell in the form of “Enviro” drum shells and “Versa” drum shells. Price’s Enviro line of drum shells utilize smaller segmented lifters resulting in greatly reduced fiber damage and white wood losses in softwood species. Another feature of the enviro drum shell is the an- Price LogPro Versa drum system at Montana operation gled, narrow bark slots that allow for overall greater bark slot area throughout the length of the drum while reducing white fiber losses to the bark system located directly below the drum. This arrangement allows for transfer of small diameter fiber to be successfully delivered to the chipper or flaker system. The “Versa” drum shells are engineered to work with segmented lifter segments much like the Enviro shell, however the segmented lifter are bolt-in rather than fix welded to the shell. Price has built drums for more than 35 years running bolt-in rubber lifters; the Versa drum shell is just an adaptation of that design. This Versa flexibility in lifter selection allows for proper fiber agitation based on species being processed and allows the drum to perform better during frozen wood processing. Clients processing wood in climate areas that are split with semi-equal frozen to non-frozen fiber processing months will have the ability to interchange the aggressive lifter segments for winter applications and then change back to standard non-aggressive lifters to reduce breakage and white wood losses during the non-frozen fiber months. Enviro and Versa Drum shells are available in all drum sizes and configurations. Price LogPro has the experience as well as the innovation to help clients process their fiber at the highest possible recovery at the lowest possible cost per ton. The future is high volume fiber processing and Price LogPro has been doing it for more than 35 years. Visit logprollc.com Booth 624 (Silver Sponsor) 52 • MARCH 2016 • PanelWorld

SIEMPELKAMP At PELICE Siempelkamp together with its subsidiaries Büttner, CMC/TEXPAN and Hombak proves once again that it always aligns its products for the engineered wood market to the needs of its North American customers. Further developments and new products not only save materials and energy, but increase the plant capacity and improve the product quality. The highlight of this exhibition is the presentation of Siempelkamp’s Generation 8 ContiRoll continuous press line. ContiRoll Generation 8 provides significant advantages in terms of material savings which are, however, not at the expense of quality. Innovative pressure distribution plates below the lower hot plate as well as an additional row of cylinders result in improved pressure distribution. The “isobaric press” has become a reality. Customers save wood, resin and energy. Siempelkamp offers new product developments. To further strengthen the ContiRoll’s performance, Siempelkamp and its subsidiary CMC/TEXPAN introduce the new glue application system EcoResinator P for particleboard plants, which allows for 10% in glue savings. The new wind former EcoFormer SL provides an even more uniform forming of the surface layer during particleboard production. The result: reduced material consumption and improved area weight tolerance. The reduced pressure loss in the EcoFormer SL furthermore allows the use of smaller blowers with lower energy consumption. With its innovative mat preheating system, Conti Booster, Siempelkamp provides another product upgrade. Plant operators achieve, depending on production conditions, roughly 20% higher outputs during the production of particleboard, MDF and OSB. Together with its subsidiary Büttner, Siempelkamp is also pleased to present fully integrated Energy/Dryer system concepts to the market. Regardless of utilizing a furnace or dust/gas burner system for heat supply, the dryer system controls is completely adapted to each other, allowing for optimal energy/drying efficiency and precise moisture control. TSI (SIGMA THERMAL) TSI produces equipment for the engineered wood and panel processing industries. Perhaps best known for its range of drum dryers, TSI has been an innovator and leading proponent of single pass recycle drying. Its dryers range in size from 3 ft. to 24 ft. in diameter and can handle evaporative loads in excess of 60 tons/hour while maintaining tight moisture tolerances and good chip conditioning along with a high degree of energy efficiency. In recent years TSI has expanded its product range to include both upstream and downstream solutions for complete dryer islands. This includes heat energy systems and emission control equipment. For heat energy TSI has partnered with Sigma Thermal to supply stepgrate furnaces designed to burn wet bark. Alternatively TSI can supply a range of fines burners all of which can be supplemented with natural gas as appropriate. Sigma TSI dryer installation Thermal will also design and build thermal oil systems that draw their energy from the same furnace. For emission control TSI has designed wet electrostatic precipitators (for removal of particulate) and regenerative thermal oxidizers for destruction of volatile organics and other hazardous air pollutants. The heat energy, dryer and emission control equipment can all be controlled from one central control system by one operator leaving responsibility for performance of this “Dryer Island” with one supplier. TSI also offers finishing lines (TSI’s original product line). This includes everything after the press. The primary technology revolves around sawing, grade stacking and packaging systems but can include value-added processes such as sanding and edge profiling. TSI will work with specific expert suppliers when appropriate for machines such as sanders but the core equipment is all designed and built in-house. TSI is continually developing and innovating new solutions in this area, the most recent example being a new panel rip saw featuring open access to all heads and an improved hold-down and panel conveying system for better service life, easier maintenance and perfect cut quality. TSI looks forward to meeting fellow attendees at the upcoming PELICE show. Visit tsi-inc.net. Booth 302 (Silver Sponsor)

USNR Plant managers are always looking to improve their operation. Better recovery, and lower energy and labor requirements make engineered wood plants more cost effective. To achieve better recovery consider BlockLogix. It is the latest advancement in lathe carriage optimization that captures the industry’s highest density block profile and yields more recovery. The system features a user-accessible PLC-based ControlLogix control system. You can easily adjust motion control parameters, reset positioning, and fine-tune offsets, all while enjoying 5-7% cycle time reduction and 2-5% recovery boost over other systems. USNR’s lathe core drive is another impressive wood recovery tool. The unit provides stability to the diminishing core and much of the drive torque required for peeling, resulting in reduced spinouts and improved veneer quality. When looking for ways to reduce energy costs, investigate the all-electric Planetary Roller Screw Actuator. This easy up- Dryer extension retrofit with more efficient burners, insulated grade replaces hydraulic cylinder and ball screw technologies floor, and improved door hardware for increased efficiency, with an electric design that reliably and consistently retracts throughput and reduced manufacturing costs. the lathe carriage at a sustained rate up to 20 in. per second. Reducing hydraulic requirements, which take a lot of energy to operate, also reduces environmental issues with oil handling and labor costs to maintain all the hydraulic componentry. The most powerful tool to reduce drying-related energy costs is the Automatic Dryer Exhaust Control (ADEC) system. The patented ADEC system significantly reduces the cost of drying veneer by decreasing energy consumption at the dryer and lowering exhaust treatment expenses. This, coupled with the resulting productivity gains and the resulting high-quality veneer with uniform moisture content, makes the ADEC system a silver bullet to your drying operation. When it comes to productivity enhancements, there are effective ways to make your existing dryer more efficient without replacing it. You might consider a dryer extension retrofit. This technique extends the length of the dryer and can be remotely assembled and rolled into place, minimizing outage time. You can add more efficient burners. The addition of a seal-welded, insulated floor and improved door hardware provides energy savings by keeping the heat in the dryer. All of these add up to increased efficiency and throughput and significant manufacturing cost reductions. Visit usnr.com. Booth 217 (Silver Sponsor)

12 ➤ like those mentioned above, there are multiple smaller projects constantly being commissioned among producers in all panel segments as plant operators seek to maintain efficiency and profitability. Here are just a few of the international projects announced during the past year: l Uniboard is investing $53 million at its Val-d’Or, Quebec particleboard and thermally fused laminate plant to modernize key production processes. This is on top of $7 million at its Mont-Laurier MDF plant and $29 million at Sayabec particleboard facility—all ongoing projects in early 2016. l Interspan, part of the Swiss Krono Group, has ordered an OSB plant from Siempelkamp for a Hungary plant near the Ukrainian border. The plant—the fourth OSB facility Krono has bought from Siempelkamp—features a 9 ft. x 28.8 m ContiRoll continuous press. l Dieffenbacher noted several international orders in 2015: a new particleboard plant for Metro-Ply of Thailand and new MDF plants for Floraplac in Brazil and Bazhou Guangyang in China. l Last year Stora Enso ordered ma-
chinery and equipment for an LVL production line from Raute Corp. for installation in Varkaus, Finland. The 100,000 m3 plant is being delivered in early 2016. It’s not all wood-based either for some suppliers. Dieffenbacher is supplying a straw-based particleboard plant to a China firm. And rumors continue to percolate that the 20-year-old CalAg waste rice straw-based MDF project in Willows, Calif. is nearing construction.
OUTLOOK “Panels appear to be slowly recovering at about the same rate as the housing recovery, so it seems as long as housing is moving in the right direction so is the panel industry,” says Josh Krauss, Price LogPro Vice President of Sales. He adds that one factor in the ongoing recovery is that much of the Southeast U.S. OSB capacity and production increases added just prior to the downturn that began for producers in 2006 has yet to be fully utilized in many cases. “Many of those improvements were never fully utilized and in the past three or four years is just now being realized,
so I think production matches demand,” Krauss says. “Aside from the new OSB plant in Texas, most producers should be able to make upgrades to match growth for the next four or five years.” Krauss also mentions that some of the pellet mills built in the past decade could come into play and be converted to panel production if facilities aren’t able to renew or find new off-take agreements when current contracts expire during the next decade or so. Alan Knokey, Vice President and General Manager of USNR’s Coe Div., says he’s seeing stability in the industry and better management of capacity issues. “The industry seems like it’s better managed (than before the downturn),” he says. “Today, producers are appropriately analyzing market conditions before they manufacture” and doing a better job developing specific products that best match their capabilities, he believes. As for the future, “It looks like steady growth—not huge, but steady growth,” Knokey says. At USNR, Knokey says the current business climate is good. “The new year is very busy so far, continuing on the heels of an extremely busy 2015, and we expect this pace to continue through the first half of the year,” he says. “A lot of projects are in process, including several green end projects, upgrades and press rebuilds.” In addition, Knokey says, USNR has several projects in place doing OSB press rebuilds, including new hydraulic and control systems to reduce cycle times and increase production. The company is also expanding with a new dryer and kiln manufacturing facility in Jacksonville, Fla. The new operation adds more than 160,000 sq. ft. to USNR’s North American manufacturing. Krauss notes that Price LogPro-Baxley Equipment took on an equity partner last year to help expand and grow the company. A big part of that is development of a service contract division to expand offerings on completed projects. “We’ve been evolving that way for the past few years, but you have to form a whole new division around providing customers with the services they’ve been requesting,” Krauss says. At Willamette Valley Co., the implementation of current new technologies is creating opportunities for the future that are exciting, says Vice President of Northwest Sales Tony Vuksich. The company’s Pre-Tec robotics and equipment division recently reached an

agreement with Cam-Sensor to utilize the smart camera-based vision system in Pre-Tec projects. “Market needs drive the demand for new products,” Vuksich says, citing Pre-Tec’s robotic cardboard applicator that meets the demand for unblemished panels by singulating, applying and securing cardboard protectors to plywood or OSB stacks. Another is a Robotic Striper that allows placement of accurately centered “size identifying stripes” on both ends of every panel. “These new innovations answer market needs, and we are experiencing increased orders as these systems solve production, quality and safety issues that mills confront every day.” Vuksich believes the panel industry is strong and its future bright. While he says matching production to demand is “always a chess game,” he thinks the industry as a whole has done a good job supplying its respective panel market segments. Supplying current products to historic markets along with introducing new products to both established and emerging markets, Vuksich says, will help lead customers to more success. Investing in new technology bodes well for the future, he believes. “We’re focused on research and development, both on the chemical and equipment fronts, to ensure we’re leading as it relates to new product development and commercialization,” Vuksich says. Anna McCann, President of Merrit Machinery, which handles Meinan lathes in North America, says she’s excited about the role Meinan and Merritt are playing with the newest plywood plant on the West Coast, the Swanson Group’s Springfield, Ore. facility that replaces the company’s plywood plant that burned there in summer 2014. The new plant features Meinan’s “newest innovation,” McCann says: An automatic peeling line with in-line green composing. According to McCann, the new line features automatic stacking of full sheets by moisture sort and direct feed of random width veneer to Meinan green veneer composers. This eliminates all manual handling and drying of random width veneer, she says. McCann says she’s encouraged by business conditions and a slowly but improving U.S. housing market. “We believe plywood manufacturers need to increase log yield and reduce manufacturing costs through automation to remain competitive with OSB,” she says. “We see positive growth for future sales of our
equipment in the North American market due to the strong dollar and our availability to provide new technology solutions to increase profits for plywood.” Marshall Lloyd, measuring system salesman for GreCon, notes that the company is busy, with some capacity available. He notes that producers are continuing to upgrade and invest in their operations. Citing the election year and recent economic woes hitting China, Lloyd says. “We should know more after the election and the shakeout of the China issues.

PROJECTS
PARTNERSHIPS ENHANCE PANEL REPAIR
F
or a long time, automating panel repair remained the holy grail of panel manufacturing. The challenge was to develop the camera technology for precisely identifying even the smallest defects, such as knot holes, pitch pockets and splits on the panel surface. Today, Raute offers precision in panel repairing with its Pro, Select and Smart lines. Each line represents a different level of customer-specific technology to meet the varying needs of different panel producers. Raute credits its extensive collaboration with a number of industry leading plywood manufacturers.
“Mecano’s machine vision was one of the reasons why Thebault chose Raute as the supplier of their two smart panel repairing lines, to be installed later in 2016,” comments Mill Director Benoit Thebault. “We have used Mecano vision since 1998 and have never had any problems with it. We trust Raute’s experience.” In Chile, Arauco’s Horcones and Nueva Aldea plywood mills are Raute’s longtime customers. Arauco installed the first Raute smart panel repairing line in 2012 at the Horcones mill. A year later, two smart panel repairing lines were in-

“Our most important resource is our large global customer base—listening to our customers’ needs and challenges. The key elements of our smart panel repairing line—precise machine vision technology, modern robotic devices and high-speed motion control systems—stem from these partnerships,” says Erkki Kauranen, Raute’s Technology Manager of Veneer Patching and Panel Repairing. Raute’s smart panel repairing line feature Mecano’s VDA Color and 3D defect analyzers with 0.3 mm accuracy. Mecano analyzers provide repairing instructions to the line control system for accurate correction of defects and panel grading. The quality of Mecano analyzers has been benchmarked in Western France, on the Thebault Groupe production units.
stalled at the Nueva Aldea mill. After several years of running the production lines, José Miguel Marqués, Operations Director at Arauco, is pleased with the line concept and construction. “These are very sophisticated systems,” he notes. “We must have dedicated maintenance, constant verification of the repair accuracy and quality, and above all, permanent technical service support from the suppliers. The lines are doing what Raute promised they would do, based on Arauco’s needs.” Automating the panel repairing process offers significant savings in labor costs. “Our smart panel repairing line only needs two operators compared to the nine operators necessary on a manual line,” clarifies Raute’s Kauranen. At
Arauco, the labor benefits of smart panel repairing lines have been appreciated. “The benefits include a substantial increase in labor productivity, consistency of solutions, and flexibility of the recipes,” adds Marqués. Another technical benefit of a fully automated repairing line comes from the heavy-duty vacuum cup conveyors that keep panels flat during movement. “Before, curved panels were a headache to the line operators—how to scan them reliably so that they could be repaired with as little material waste as possible,” notes Kauranen. The Thebault Groupe production units are eagerly waiting the new repairing lines. “These lines are built to increase our process responsiveness, leading to reduced delivery times and increased volume of repired panels while also reducing manual labor tasks,” envisions Thebault. Automatic repairing means end products with consistent quality and higher capacity, and simultaneously reduced use of repair material. The line’s small footprint frees up space for other processes. “Technology is important, but I think our greatest value comes from our local resources close to our customers, reinforced with our global network of expertise,” adds Kauranen. “With remote support our customers can connect with our top specialists at any time and from anywhere.” “One of the reasons for choosing Raute as the supplier of our smart panel repairing lines is our mutual history of collaboration and Raute’s permanent technical service support here in Chile,” says Arauco’s Marqués. PLITSPICHPROM ORDERS P’BOARD LINE With an order from Plitspichprom, a Russian plant operator, 2015 came to an end successfully, according to Siempelkamp. Four orders for the Russian market alone were received in 2015. The current order consists of a complete plant for particleboard production, which will be built in Balabanovo and will replace an outdated multi-daylight

PROJECTS press for particleboard production of Soviet design. Plitspichprom decided to buy a stateof-the-art 6 ft. x 18.8 m Generation 8 ContiRoll continuous press. With innovative pressure distribution plates, an extended cylinder bed and many new equipment features, the press will operate virtually isobaric. The plant is designed to achieve an annual capacity of up to 180,000 m³. The equipment for the front-end of the line including chippers, flakers and mills will be supplied by Pallmann, specialist for size reduction and preparation technology. The EcoFormer SL, developed by the Italian Siempelkamp subsidiary CMC Texpan, will be used for surface layer mat forming. Advantages for the customer include: reduction in material usage and, at the same time, an improved area weight tolerance, and significantly lower energy consumption. Siempelkamp subsidiary Büttner will supply the drying technology including a drum dryer designed for a capacity of 36 metric tons per hour. The screening technology, a complete resin preparation and dosing system, the exhaust and filter technology, the thermal oil boiler, the cooling and stacking line as well as the automation and drive technology for the complete plant are also part of Siempelkamp’s scope of supply. The Siempelkamp scope of supply will be completed by Prod-IQ control technology, which allows professional trending, commission evaluations as well as laboratory data and downtime management. To ensure exact integration of the new plant into the existing complex infrastructure in Balabanovo, Siempelkamp will
use the proven “Lead Engineering” concept by Sicoplan for this project. The three-dimensional measuring process of the existing premises, which took place during the planning phase, will prevent conflicts, or worse, collisions with existing building structures and provide for trouble-free project implementation. The new plant will not only open up increased product flexibility and plant availability for Plitspichprom but also ensure utmost efficiency in the highly competitive Russian market for wood-based products, according to Siempelkamp. The start of installation in Balabanovo is forecast for September 2016, and the commissioning for summer 2017.
WANHUA ORDERS STRAW-P’BOARD MILL In December Dieffenbacher received an order for a straw-based particleboard plant from Chinese chemical company, Wanhua. The plant is designed to deliver an annual output of 110,000 m³ of straw-based particleboard. Wanhua can use the plant to manufacture panels constructed from wood, a blend of wood and straw, and entirely from straw. In the current fiscal year, Dieffenbacher reports it has secured 11 major orders for complete plants. The scope of supply includes everything from the forming station to the finishing line. The forming station is equipped with two windformers for the surface layer and a forming head for the core layer. The core element of the plant is the continuous press CPS type 280 – 23.5. This 8.5 ft. press produces boards that are up to 2440 mm wide and between 8 mm and 35 mm thick. The
components supplied in the finishing line area include a diagonal saw and a distribution and trimming saw. Dieffenbacher states it has been working for a long time on plant concepts for alternative raw materials such as fastgrowing woods, annual crops (e.g. sugar cane, straw) and recycled wood in response to the rising demand for machine technology designed to work with these specific raw materials. The rising price of wood is usually the reason behind the partial or complete replacement of wood in the manufacture of boards. However, environmental policy requirements have also driven this development. In China, thousands of tons of straw are burned in the fields each year, which has a significant impact on the environment. In the future, these large quantities must be used in other ways. The exclusive cooperation with Wanhua is a project with this in mind. The Wanhua Industrial Group is a Chinese chemical company with headquarters in Yantai, Shandong Province. It is a major worldwide manufacturer of MDI glue.
TIMBER PRODUCTS INSTALLS DRYER Timber Products has invested in a new 6-deck, 12-section USNR veneer dryer for its plywood operation at Medford, Ore. The project features a newlydesigned USNR feeding system including vacuum sheet feeder/accumulator and unloading system. Timber Products processes a variety of hardwood and softwood species into high value plywood and wood panels, and operates nine manufacturing facilities in the U.S.

APA MEETING REVEALS OPTIMISM
M
ore than 450 APA members, Engineered Wood Technology Assn. (EWTA) members, staff, spouses and guests gathered October 17–20 at the Coeur d’Alene Golf & Spa Resort, Idaho for the 2015 APA
Annual Meeting and Info Fair. In keeping with the meeting theme, “APA Looks Back to Our Future, Driving the Road to Success,” presenters at the meeting shared perspectives on what the future holds for APA and the industry.
During the APA—The Engineered Wood Assn. annual meeting last October, the Engineered Wood Technology Assn. presented its 2015 Supplier Award winners to Hunt, Guillot & Associates, Nondestructive Inspection Service, Panel World magazine, Willamette Valley Company and Kadant Carmanah Design. Shown here, left to right, are Terry Kerwood, managing director, EWTA; Rich Donnell, editor-in-chief, Panel World; John Harrison, president and CEO, Willamette Valley Co.; Michael Colwell, president, Kadant Carmanh Design; and APA board member Don Grimm, president, Hood Industries.
The General Session featured a panel discussion with Dr. Thomas Maness, Cheryl Ramberg-Ford and Allyn C. Ford Dean of the College of Forestry at Oregon State University, and Dr. Paul Winistorfer, Dean of the College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech. The panelists shared their strategic visions for the industry and provided updates on their programs and the challenges involved in attracting students to their programs and to careers in the industry. In his State of the Industry address, APA Chairman Tom Temple reported that the association has been making progress toward the four goals identified in APA’s updated Strategic Plan. Membership continues to be strong, with 163 member facilities in the U.S., Canada, and South America. APA now represents 85% of the structural wood panel production, 88% of glulam production, 71% of I-joist, and 71% of laminated veneer 82 • MARCH 2016 • PanelWorld

CLIPPINGS lumber production. He also acknowledged that EWTA membership has grown to 108 member companies. Temple noted the importance of looking to the future, anticipating what’s coming, and positioning APA and its members for success in the long term. “How do we invest and plan for the next 40 years? We need to identify the research and technical know-how that will support market development and building design in areas such as multistory residential and commercial construction,” Temple said. He reviewed key activities in codes and standards, market development, and educational outreach, and emphasized the important role that the Board of Trustees and advisory committees play in managing the association budget and activities. “We face tremendous challenges in making forwardthinking investments in the facilities and our people, while also recognizing the right scale of activity and being tempted by mission creep,” he said. APA President Ed Elias noted the association’s past successes, demonstrating the ability to be nimble as APA adjusted to changes in fiber usage, technology, and more diversified product offerings. As we look to the future, Elias emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships with other industry associations and research organizations. He highlighted emerging opportunities in residential construction, multistory building design, and strong engagement in product standards, building codes, and research related to product performance. “We have identified the significant challenges and have programs in place to address those key opportunities and threats,” Elias said. “Most importantly, we have the voice of a strong membership that guides us and brings credibility to everything we do.” Jonathan E. Martin, chairman and CEO of RoyOMartin in Alexandria, La., was honored with the Bronson J. Lewis Award. Named after the late Bronson Lewis, who served for 24 years as secretary and then executive vice president of APA, the award recognizes individuals for their lifetime leadership and outstanding contribution to the wood products industry. The EWTA members and exhibitors also hosted a welcome reception and sponsored the sporting events. (Article by APA—The Engineered Wood Assn.)
LP ADDS LINE AT THOMASVILLE Louisiana-Pacific Corp. is adding a FlameBlock Fire-Rated OSB Sheathing line at its Clarke County, Ala. facility. It will be manufactured under a Technology License Agreement with International Barrier Technology Inc. and features a proprietary, non-combustible Pyrotite layer that is a code compliant component of fire-rated building assemblies. Brad Southern, executive vice president, OSB, comments, “This substantial investment at our Clarke County mill will increase our ability to meet the growing market demand for fire-rated
building products like LP FlameBlock in the single-family, multi-family and light commercial construction markets.” Construction on the new line is scheduled for completion by September. When fully operational, the expansion will add about 20 new jobs to the mill, which currently employs 159. Southern adds, “Our Clarke County mill was the clear choice for adding FlameBlock production because of the quality of the workforce there. Geographically, manufacturing in Clarke County brings production closer to strong building markets including the Southwest, Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic. In addition, our Clarke County mill produces 9 ft. and 10 ft. LP LongLength Sheathing, often preferred for FlameBlock wall applications.”
