Healthy Supply Chains

Fiber Flow, Bioenergy Output

D

uring the past year, as the coronavirus pandemic has revealed strengths and weaknesses throughout the greater economy, the importance of supply chains has been emphasized repeatedly. Establishing and maintaining consistent and reliable supply chains is critical when pursuing any type of logistical success. The ability to develop and operate productive and efficient supply chains is especially important in the wood bioenergy industry, part of the global market for energy consumption that must meet consumer demand. This issue underlines the importance of maintaining supply chains in two seemingly disparate news items: Passage of the Loggers Relief Act and ongoing efforts to implement large scale forest rehab efforts in Arizona. In each case, the importance of supply chains is prominent. Included as part of the sweeping federal coronavirus relief legislation that passed Congress and was signed by the President at the end of 2020, the Loggers Relief Act provides funds for contractors affected by the virus, but more importantly it provides a level of even footing for the logging industry as a commodity producer, much like other agricultural entities, when it comes to assistance. The legislation provides relief funds that will help maintain the strength of fiber supply chains when the commodity fiber markets they serve undergo changes. As American Loggers Council officials say, the program isn’t to make loggers whole, but instead provide breathing room when market forces upend business plans—just like many farm programs. These supply chains are not only critical for fiber and log flows to wood-consuming businesses of all kinds, but are also sources of good-paying rural jobs that are in short supply in many areas. Showing that happens when supply chains are allowed to wither is the situation in Arizona, where officials continue to grapple with forest health goals to “treat” more than 2 million acres of public land that are

6

in danger of wildfire. In the process of improving forest health, the project will produce billions of board feet of solid wood and mountains, no kidding, mountains of biomass and chips. Of course, that’s only if there’s a supply chain in place to do it, which there’s not right now. In Arizona the supply chain suffered differently, as federal timber sales were drastically reduced to the point that the infrastructure to handle them, from the forest and stump to the mill, had almost disappeared over a 20+ year period. Now, issues of forest health in the state are requiring a massive investment in supply chain capacity in all areas, from timber harvesting to hauling and processing. Again, emphasizing the importance of healthy supply chains. As this issue’s cover story feature shows the efficient work of contractor Clint Horn in a key part of the biomass supply chain, it’s important to remember that before the BTUs can be burned for heat and light, a healthy supply chain must put them in place.

Wood Bio 2022 Dates Announced “The Future Is Bright” is the promotional slogan for the seventh Wood Bioenergy Conference & Expo scheduled March 29-30, 2022 at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center, Grand Ballroom North, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The Wood Bio conference draws participants from the industrial wood pellet, biomass power, biofuels, in-woods chipping and raw material procurement sectors. It features dozens of presentations on new projects and technologies delivered by producer company executives, supplier representatives and industry consultants. It also attracts up to 70 equipment and technology exhibitors in the Grand Ballroom North. Wood Bio 2020 was held right as the pandemic hit last March and was the last wood bioenergy industry conference held in person. “I firmly believe that once the virus is under control that in-person events will have more relevance and generate more enthusiasm than ever,” comments Rich Donnell, conference co-chairman and editor-in-chief of Wood Bioenergy magazine. Donnell says the 2022 event is beginning to solicit presentation proposals and sell exhibitor space and sponsorships. Wood Bioenergy Conference & Expo will again be followed by the eighth Panel & Engineered Lumber International Conference & Expo, March 31 to April 1. Many attendees and exhibitors participate in both events. For presentation information, contact Rich Donnell, rich@hattonbrown.com. For exhibitor information, contact Fred Kurpiel, fredkurpiel@aol.com.

COVID Relief Act Includes Loggers Following months of political lobbying, America’s loggers finally have access to financial assistance. The Emergency Coronavirus Relief Act of 2020, passed by a bipartisan vote in both

8

the House and Senate in late December, includes language appropriating $200 million in funding for those logging and log trucking businesses that saw a greater than 10% loss in gross revenues from January 1 through December 1, 2020 related to the COVID-19 pandemic, as compared to rev-

enues for the same period in 2019. Contacted a few days after President Trump signed the legislation, American Loggers Council Executive Vice President Danny Dructor was excited about its passage, though he cautioned, “We may be a ways off before we can see any money on the ground.”

Going forward, he said, two big issues are how the funds will be administered and the qualifications for receiving assistance. “The issue is the $200 million needs to go to those truly impacted by COVID,” Dructor says. Administrators may want to roll the logger relief funds into an existing program. Two potential areas are the USDA’s Farm Service Agency or more recently created USDA Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) for agricultural producers whose operations were directly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Compounding the uncertainty is the change in presidential administrations. One of the most significant impacts of the relief fund passage is the recognition that loggers are their own industry, apart from pulp and paper or lumber. “Creating

parity” between loggers and other commodity agricultural producers is a big objective that is beginning to be realized with the legislation, Dructor said. Another big impact is the awareness of what’s possible when people get Loggers and log haulers receive monetary assistance. involved. “This happened because industry came together,” rienced severe losses when lumber Dructor said. “When loggers do and paper mills across the country stand together they can get things reduced or ceased production in done, and that’s important because response to drops in demand. Acwe had people from all over get incording to reports, raw material volved, and lots of people engaged delivered to mills by loggers and their representatives.” truckers have experienced price Logging and log hauling busidrops greater than 5% in 2020 nesses were deemed to be essencompared to 2019. lion (-13.0%) loss in revenue. Insurance, equipment, fuel and other costs make up the vast majority of logging expenses as compared to payroll which some were able to take advantage of under the Payroll Protection Program issued earlier during the pandemic. “The

amount of relief coming from the federal government is not meant to make these businesses whole, but rather to serve as a stop gap while they adjust their business plans to be able to operate under this new economy,” Dructor said. Logging companies need to be

able to take advantage of programs like other commodity producers, said ALC President Tim Christopherson of Kamiah, Id. “To see Christmas trees and other agricultural commodities and specialty crops included in the first and second versions of the Coronavirus Food Protection Program (CFAP) while not including those same trees that can be turned into paper and other consumables simply did not make sense. We applaud members of Congress for recognizing and including the loggers and log haulers in this historic legislation.” Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) secured logger relief funds in draft legislation released in December by a bipartisan coalition of members of Congress. Her provision built upon the “Loggers Relief Act” that Collins, Jared Golden (Maine second district congressman) and Rep. David Rouzer (RNC) spearheaded earlier this year. Ultimately, the provision was retained in the final COVID relief package passed by Congress. “This industry is built on the backs of our dedicated loggers who sustainably harvest and haul one of Maine’s most precious resources,” Collins said. “Loggers were already facing significant headwinds due to a changing 21st Century economy and unfair trade practices, as well as the explosion Androscoggin mill in Jay and the shutdown of the paper machine at Sappi in Westbrook. COVID-19 has only compounded these challenges. Maine’s family logging and log hauling businesses need our support.” “Maine loggers don’t want a handout, but they deserve the same support during tough times that we have already provided for farmers and fishermen,” Golden said.

grade of its existing wood pellet facility in Pine Bluff, Ark. as well as provide capital for additional long-term growth initiatives. The facility is supported by a long-term contract with a major European power producer and, when complete, will be capable of producing up to 675,000 metric tons of wood pellets per year. Orion Energy provides capital solutions to middle market energy infrastructure businesses across North America and select international markets. “Our partnership with Orion Energy puts us in position to become a top global supplier of sustainable wood pellets,” says Tom Reilley, Highland CEO. “This transaction will allow us to scale up our Pine Bluff facility and continue to execute our growth strategy. Orion Energy has been a collaborative capital partner and was able to ex-

ecute the transaction in an uncertain market backdrop with speed and efficiency. We look forward to growing our platform with the Orion Energy team.” “We are pleased to partner with Highland to expand the Pine Bluff facility and provide a sustainable fuel source to support the global renewable fuels market. Tom and his dedicated team have worked relentlessly to execute their plan and we are excited to collaborate at this transformational stage,” adds Ethan Shoemaker, Investment Partner and Head of the Houston Office for Orion Energy. Early in 2020 Highland Pellets revealed it had temporarily shut down the plant because the drying technology installed had not met the company’s demands, and that the company was purchasing new equipment. The mill delivered its first pellets in April 2017.

Subsequently it was announced that Highland had awarded Büttner the order for four drum dryers.

South Africa Pellet Plant Has New Life Hive Energy (United Kingdom), iLive Sustainable Development (South Africa) and Partners for Innovation (Netherlands) have joined forces to establish Coega Biomass Centre in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The company, funded by Hive Energy, has taken over and will restore an existing non-operational plant to produce high quality wood pellets using biomass residues, non-indigenous forest and destructive invasive vegetation, restoring indigenous vegetation, improving water supplies and providing cleaner burning fuel to replace dirty coal, charcoal and anthracite. The initiative will commence with wood pellet production that is suitable to be used in many applications—from home boilers for heating and cleaner domestic cooking to industrial furnaces for steam generation and for power production. Coega Biomass Centre will undertake a full refurbishment of the plant, which is expected to take nine months and develop production capacity of 120,000 tons of white pellets annually. An estimated 200,000 tons of equivalent coal CO2 per annum could be offset with pellets produced by Coega Biomass Centre. Coega Biomass Centre is also conducting a feasibility study on drying and torrefaction technologies to produce black pellets. CEO of Hive Energy Giles Redpath remarks, “For Hive Energy this venture is an exciting opportunity to invest further in our cleaner world vision. It is an excellent project that will contribute meaningfully in accelerating the transition to green energy globally. Not

12

only will this benefit local communities in an area of high unemployment, but it will also positively impact the recovery of local ecosystems and now offer a cleaner energy option for thousands of dirty energy users in other parts of the world that lack this resource.” Hive Energy was founded in 2010 by Redpath to participate in the significant solar PV expansion in the UK, where it has established 26 grid connected solar parks, and now has offices in 10 countries including Spain, Turkey, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Mauritius, Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa. iLive is a project and technology development company aimed at realizing initiatives within the renewable energy and circular economy sector. iLive was founded in June 2010 in order to leverage the experience and knowledge by its founder, Werner Euler. The first strides of iLive were on the development of biomass pelletization of green garden waste, biodiesel manufacturing from used cooking oil, and the pyrolysis of plastic and rubber waste into liquid fuels and recycled products. Founded in 2006, Partners for Innovation is an international consultancy and project development company that is specialized in initiating, preparing, supporting and implementing projects and policies in the fields of renewable energy, climate change, agroforestry-based entrepreneurship and sustainable product design.

200,000 metric tons per year. “The mill has exceeded expectations through its first two weeks of operations, largely due to the effective collaboration between our capital projects and operations groups as well as the strong working relationship with Tolko that has existed since our first joint investment at Lavington, BC, in 2015,” states Duncan Davies, CEO of Pinnacle. “The commissioning of this mill along with our project at Demopolis, Alabama, which is scheduled for completion in Q2 2021, will increase Pinnacle’s overall production capacity by almost 25% to 2.8 million metric tons per annum and increase the portion located in jurisdictions outside of BC to approximately 44%.”

Active Energy Gears Up For CoalSwitch Active Energy announced it has received its first order for its CoalSwitch pellet from PacifiCorp, the largest grid operator in the Western U.S. The product will be burned at PacifiCorp’s Hunter Power coal plant in Utah as part of a coal/biomass co-firing demonstration being conducted by PacifiCorp. Active Energy says it will produce the pellets at its new operation in Lumberton, NC. Active Energy will be supplying up to 900 tonnes for delivery by June 14, 2021. Work on the CoalSwitch plant is ongoing, with construction activity expected to increase early in 2021. Active Energy appointed Player Design to complete the engineering and construction. Active Energy and Player Design anticipate the commissioning of the first CoalSwitch Plant in the second quarter. “We are delighted to have received our first order of CoalSwitch from PacifiCorp,” comments Michael Rowan, CEO of Active Energy. “We are on track with our business plan and we are working at great pace to commission the plant.” Active Energy Group plc is a

London-listed renewable energy company that says it has developed a proprietary technology which transforms low-cost biomass material into high-value green fuels, and that its patented product CoalSwitch is the world’s only drop-in biomass fuel that can be mixed at any ratio with coal or completely replace coal in existing coal-fired power stations without requiring plant modification. Player Design performed an independent analysis of the CoalSwitch process, and plant design, with particular reference to the emission control system in accordance with the requirements of the permit. This analysis has resulted in some changes to the existing design and specification for the plant to ensure that the new plant can be an operating platform to produce the first versions of biomass fuels with CoalSwitch specifications and operate with an initial capacity of up to 3 tonnes per hour. Tyler Player, CEO of Player Design, comments, “Working with Active Energy provides Player Design with a unique opportunity to better understand the capabilities of next generation biomass fuels, using waste resources and in particular the impact CoalSwitch will have. Our work to date has already validated Active Energy’s initial analysis on CoalSwitch and we now look forward to working with the team to have the commercial scale Lumberton facility in production as soon as possible and then on further CoalSwitch projects with Active Energy.” Rowan of Active Energy Group, adds, “We have been making rapid progress at Lumberton since the award of the permit in August 2020. With the additional support from Player Design, we expect the pace of our activities to accelerate to reflect the market opportunities now presenting themselves both in the U.S. and internationally.” In March 2019 the company acquired an industrial site compris-

Finite Carbon Receives New Stakeholder bp has acquired a majority stake in carbon offset developer Finite Carbon, building on its existing interest in the company. Finite Carbon states it is the largest developer of forest carbon offsets in the U.S. bp will bring the firm into its inhouse business accelerator, bp Launchpad. Together with bp’s additional investment, this is expected to bolster Finite Carbon’s expansion, including into new geographical markets. Finite Carbon identifies and develops projects that enable landowners to generate revenue from the protection, restoration, and

sustainable management of forests. These actions increase carbon stored in forests and generate carbon offsets that are verified against industry-recognized standards and can be traded on markets. Sean Carney, founder of Finite Carbon, comments, “Putting a price on carbon can make it possible for anyone with the ability to protect, plant or improve forests to generate revenue from their efforts. However, there is no infrastructure to quantify, monitor and verify these actions. Thanks to this unique partnership with bp, Finite Carbon now has the resources of a global energy company behind it to help address this enormous environmental challenge and help small landowners access this market.” Finite Carbon reports it now has 50 carbon projects on 3 million acres in the U.S., which have registered more than 70 million in-

dependently verified offsets and generated more than $500 million in revenue for landowners. The increased investment will aid the delivery of a further $1 billion to landowners by 2030 from its existing business lines and its new CORE Carbon platform. CORE Carbon is a web-based platform designed to enable small landowners to access the carbon offset market. The technology removes barriers, including high transaction monitoring and reporting costs, which prevent small landowners from accessing the carbon market and instead enable them to generate new annual income through long-term commitments to good land stewardship. Recently, Enviva, the world’s larger producer of industrial wood pellets, teamed up with Finite Carbon to engage small forest landowners across the U.S. Southeast to voluntarily participate in global greenhouse gas emissions reduction programs. Enviva’s partnership with Finite Carbon is intended to emphasize continued forest growth and carbon sequestration across the U.S. Southeast by creating an additional incentive for small forest landowners to protect their forests, especially sensitive, bottomland hardwoods.

Enviva Reports New Blockchain Program Industrial wood pellet manufacturing leader Enviva and “blockchain” company GoChain revealed a collaborative pilot program designed to enhance the traceability of sustainable biomass. The pilot program identified a select group of suppliers from Enviva’s wood sourcing regions in the U.S. Southeast to monitor various data elements such as forest tract locations, load weights, fiber commodity types, and forest types. Leveraging GoChain’s blockchain, Enviva was able to monitor the movement of wood fiber in realtime from select forest tracts at the

time of harvest to Enviva’s wood pellet production plants with a unique QR code. The pilot provided real-time geofencing, data analytics, and notification capabilities. In total, more than 1,000 loads of biomass were delivered from the forest to the production plant and recorded “on-chain” during the pilot. Given the pilot’s success, Enviva anticipates further exploration and piloting of blockchain technology. Enviva elected to partner with GoChain on the pilot program because of their dedication to sustainability and innovative green technologies. GoChain has developed a unique, highly scalable and secure blockchain solution that is among the greenest and most energy efficient on the market, according to Enviva. It uses a “Proof of Reputation” consensus model for processing transactions. The use of blockchain technology

not only serves to eliminate unnecessary middlemen and provide transparency in supply chains but also enables real-time audit of secure, time-stamped transactions recorded on an immutable ledger. Blockchain is quickly proving to be essential for accelerating certification milestones and ensuring the validity of sustainability governance.

Arizona Restoration Remains Uncertain Uncertainty continues to surround forest restoration efforts in Arizona: A key second contract for the U.S. Forest Service’s (FS) Four Forests Restoration Initiative (4FRI) has been delayed again; Arizona state election results will affect the state’s renewable energy policy that’s going to be a big part of any forest restoration effort; and while recently introduced legisla-

tion could make the 4FRI process easier, the federal government’s final budget proposal seeks to eliminate the Forest Service Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program that funds 4FRI and 22 other stewardship projects across the country and shift its administration elsewhere in the Forest Service that also does restoration work to reduce duplication. The 4FRI is a highly ambitious project seeking to actively treat more than 2 million acres that are at risk for wildfires across four Arizona national forests. The first 4FRI contract awarded in 2012 to treat 300,000 acres has underperformed, as the state faces major challenges, primarily the lack of timber harvesting, hauling and processing capacity to make such extensive forest work viable. In September 2020, 4FRI officials again extended the ➤ 25

crochip that goes through a plant that ends up in Europe and they are replacing burning coal with what we are making here that’s sustainable… together I think that’s huge for the forestry, logging, timber industry in general that we’ve made that kind of turnaround in the last 30 years. That is special,” he says with a touch of wonder and pride. “We went from the devil to one of the greenest industries out there.” And Horn’s proud that his company is part of that supply chain, having both SFI and FSC Chain of Custody certifications for over 10 years. Not just because his markets require them to meet their own sustainability

goals and requirements, but because he truly believes in the qualifications and what all these groups are trying to accomplish, it is not a problem for us. BMPs are not a big deal; we do that anyway. We’ve never had issues with what is required,” he emphasizes. At the same time, Horn does admit that sometimes, following his market’s strict sustainability requirements can be a challenge, especially when it comes to explaining those set of regulations to landowners who see the immense value in chipping their land as pulpwood markets get tighter and tighter in south Arkansas. And while Timber Logistics’ contract crews are struggling with tight pulpwood markets, the company chipping crews are seeing it as an opportunity for landowners. Horn explains, “There’s a lot of

thinning to be done and the chip market in this area is helping get it thinned. Most of what we do is thinning as far as what we’re selling for chips. We have the ability to handle final harvest tracts and chip what comes off there and still sort out the higher value products for the client. We’re sending everything to a higher value product, using the lower value material to make a microchip.” When Horn started the company in 2004, after leaving a corporate forestry job, he didn’t know he would get into the microchip making business so heavily, but he’s glad he did. Of the company crews that first started hauling roundwood to Drax many years ago, to now producing over 100 loads per week of microchips, he says it was a snowball effect. “We chip. That’s what we do.” ➤ 22

Chips are hauled using late model trucks. Horn keeps tracts within 100 air miles of the crew’s home base of Warren.

■ chipping operation

In The Woods The chipping crews are based out of Warren, and operate within 100 air miles of the office complex that includes the shop and a small yard. Using Bandit chippers, the crews produce dirty microchips. Horn says he hasn’t had a need to debark and make a clean chip, mainly because the woods crew is diligent in not producing a lot of other things in the chips they make. He’d consider moving to a debarked, clean chip if the market dictated it—assuming the numbers lined up. “I have a minor in statistics. I’m a numbers guy,” he says. That education, and Horn’s experience working for a corporate mill, has shaped the way Timber Logistics operates of course, but it also means that, according to him, he’s always strategizing. Strategizing is what took the company from just four employees to 34 in a span of 17 years. The 34 full and part-time employees include equipment operators, supervisors, shop people, two registered foresters, an incredibly experienced forest technician fondly called Mr. Joe and Horn himself. Depending on the week, the crews move between 400 to 500 loads per week working 100% purchased stumpage; hauling to all the major markets in the southern regions of Arkansas, to include Drax, Highland Pellets, GP, PotlatchDeltic, Interfor, Resolute Forest Products, Clearwater, Canfor, West Fraser, Evergreen and Graphic Packaging. The crews are set up basically the same, with one crew using two skidders and two loaders, while the other two crews just use one loader and one skidder. As to the iron: Horn runs a lot of John Deere (four loaders, three skidders and a cutter) and some Tigercat (two cutters, one skidder and one loader). “We’ve also got a very old Barko loader on a military truck that is very handy to bail us out of situations,” he explains. The three chippers are Bandit 2590s. When Horn first made the move to microchips, he was able to source some Bandits on the used market and that was the better financial decision for the company at the time. Happy with what the machine is able to produce, and the service he gets from Bandit’s factory in Michigan, Horn has stayed loyal to the brand. It also follows a philosophy Horn has had with all his equipment. Keeping brand loyal means he’s able to stock common parts on his shop shelves and keep pieces moving. Laughing, Horn says, “Because in south Arkansas sometimes parts can be hard to get your hands on,” before hitting a more serious note, “We’ve always dealt directly with the guys in Michigan and they have taken care of us.” On the trucking side, Timber Logistics has 12 late models (a mix of Freightliner, Peterbilt and Mack). In an effort to stay on top of ever-changing regulatory framework, Horn goes with ’14s or newer on the road, but sticks primarily with used trailers. Six double bunk log trailers haul roundwood. A mix of 12 Peerless and Nabors blow in chip trailers haul microchips. Another part of Timber Logistics strategy, Horn has always pur-

chased used trailers, finding value in what’s available as needed or taking open tops and modifying them. Maintenance work is handled at the headquarters complex in Warren, which includes the sizable office, shop, fuel station and some storage. Horn admits he has a tendency to want to do everything he can himself (or his shop can handle) as opposed to paying for outside work. When the chipper engines (one Cummins and two Cats) need service that they cannot handle, Riggs Cat will step in. Southeast Knife Specialties in Crossett, Ark. handles all knife sharpening. To keep everything straight, Horn leans on two right hand men: Derek Adair, Timber Logistics Operations Manager in charge of all in-woods operations; and Scott Taylor, in charge of all trucking operations and on the road logistics. “Without those two nothing would happen,” Horn says. Adair handles all maintenance scheduling, typically at 300-hour intervals, and Horn likes that Adair knows when to shut them down so no production is lost. Taylor handles all truck work and keeps tires rolling in a similar manner. It is not just Adair and Taylor that Horn says keep Timber Logistics at the top of its game. Stacy Parker keeps everything at the office squared away and is the coordinator for all things administrative. “The company wouldn’t be what it is today if it wasn’t for the integrity and the work ethic of everyone that works here. We’re all a big team and we depend on each other.”

15 ➤ deadline for 4FRI’s expansive Phase 2 contract, already delayed a year, due to a variety of issues, primarily questions and requested changes made by potential bidders. Billed as a precedent-shattering stewardship contract that covers 20 years and provides the huge volumes required to justify a major investment in infrastructure and timber processing capacity, Phase 2 seeks to treat more than 800,000 acres but has suffered several delays in awarding the contract. An FS spokesman says the plan now is to award the Phase 2 contract in April 2021. Meanwhile, election results from November show little support for a state mandate requiring utilities to purchase a certain amount of biomass-derived power that would help provide critical markets for the lower quality fiber coming off restoration projects. The Arizona Corporate Commission considers such proposals and voted down a similar mandate 3-2 last year. But once the newly elected commissioners are seated in January, only one commission member is on record supporting a biomass mandate. Arizona’s only biomass power plant, the 28MW Novopower, can handle enough volume to support roughly 15,000 acres of thinning each year, but more capacity is needed, especially with Phase 2’s projected massive biomass volumes. Novopower is negotiating new power purchase agreements with Arizona Public Service and the Salt River Project. According to Novopower President Brad Worsley, despite more competitive solar and wind power prices, utility executives understand the importance of forest treatment and he hopes to have power contracts renewed by mid 2021. There’s also federal legislation introduced and supported by Arizona’s congressional delegation. The “Forest Health and Biomass Energy Act of 2020,” if passed, would set the table for Arizona to

expand biomass power generation by, among other things, creating a fund to help subsidize biomass harvesting, collection and transportation, streamlining the FS bureaucracy in terms of identifying and defining sources—and also giving preferential treatment to facilities that have recently converted from coal burning.

CEOs Address Climate Change Forest products industry, environmental and conservation leaders have announced an agreement of principles on the important role sustainably managed forests and forest products can play in mitigating climate change. The principles were signed by the CEOs of 43 forest industry businesses representing more than 46 million acres of working forests across the U.S., along with CEOs of American Forests, American Forest Foundation, Environmental Defense Fund, National Alliance of Forest Owners and The Nature Conservancy. The policy principles encourage incentive and market-based approaches to increase the carbon benefits of working forests and forest products. They recognize the important role that private sector participation, investment and partnerships can play in expanding carbon benefits from the forest sector. They also emphasize the need for robust science, data and life cycle analysis to guide policy. Forest owners and forest products manufacturers are well positioned to optimize the carbon potential of the private working forest value chain through sustainable forest management and the manufacture of sustainable forest products. However, private forests are under increasing threat from uncharacteristic wildfire, pests and disease, drought and extreme weather events that can cause significant carbon releases and other environmental damage. In many

private forests, addressing these threats requires sustainable management such as thinning, prescribed fire, and other forest management techniques that bolster forest health and resilience. Some of the signees include J. Travis Bryant, President & CEO, Coastal Forest Resources Co.; Marc Brinkmeyer, Owner, Idaho Forest Group; James Irving, Co-CEO, J.D. Irving, Ltd.; Bob Lyle, President, Molpus Woodlands Group; Mike Covey, Chairman and CEO, PotlatchDeltic; David Nunes, President and CEO, Rayonier, Inc.; Grady Mulbery, President and CEO, Roseburg Forest Products; Mark Emmerson Chairman and CFO, Sierra Pacific Industries; Brian Luoma President and CEO, The Westervelt Co.; Steve Killgore CEO, Timber Products Co.; Devin Stockfish, President and CEO, Weyerhaeuser.

Arauco Reports CO2 Net Surplus Charles Kimber, Arauco Senior Vice-President, Human Resources and Sustainability, announced that the Chilean forestry company achieved certification as carbon neutral. This means that the carbon dioxide captures of the company are equal to or greater than its emissions. Arauco, based in Chile, states it becomes the first forestry company in the world to meet this important goal. This achievement is sustained by two complementary paths: efficiencies at an operational level that allow the company to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and an increase in CO2 captures by the native forest, forest plantations, and carbon stored in forestry products. The company says the current status is built on a path it began paving in the ’90s with regard to emission reductions through integrating clean and renewable energy from biomass into its production processes. According to the company, Arauco generated a net surplus of 2,599,753 tons of CO2.

Baker-Rullman Offers Drum Dryer Efficiency Baker-Rullman’s innovative triple-pass drum dryer design offers leading performance and effi-

ciency in the smallest possible package size. A properly sized and tuned drum dryer system suited to your input volume is the key to planning an efficient system. Three full length cylinders proHigh efficiency wood biomass drum drying technology

vide the maximum effective length and residence time in a very compact package. The drum drive uses specifically designed engineering class bushed roller chains and sprockets. Trunnion rollers are made from Class 50 cast iron with a minimum roller face hardness of 270 BHN. The inboard tapered roller bearings, which have a “B1” life of 15 years, allow the roller to rotate around the stationary roller shaft supported by the holddown pillow blocks. This design has proven to be more reliable than the commonly used small diameter roller with an integral cast shaft, the company states. The drum tire is hot forged from a single billet of AISI 1025 steel, then finish machined. There is no weld seam on it, and the steel grain structure is oriented for greater wear resistance and strength. To achieve efficiencies better than 1,500 BTUs per pound of water evaporated, the design incorporates longer residence times, robust temperature control, and superior drum insulation. Precise electronic controls eliminate heat surges and fuel waste. Consistent evaporation in Baker-Rullman’s triple pass dryer design protects wood biomass from under or over drying. Heavier, wetter product moves slower than fine particles, giving uniform drying to all particles. That’s why these rotary dryers have long been known for protecting the integrity of all types of material. Baker-Rullman’s rotary dryers have developed a global reputation for reliability. Hybrid Solar-Biomass Plant Is Running

Crouse Represents Bandit In Arkansas

Two 20.5 MW heaters manufactured by Sugimat for Termosolar Borges, the world’s first solar thermal-biomass hybrid plant, are operating at full capacity after successful performance tests. The plant, unique in the world due to its process conditions, is the first to combine biomass and thermosolar energy through a field of parabolic trough mirrors. Thanks to this hybridization, the plant, located in Les Borges Blanques (Lleida, Spain), provides energy 24 hours a day. In addition to the heaters, Sugimat developed the remainder of the plant’s elements in turnkey mode. In 12 months and with an unprecedented health crisis during the final phase of the project, Sugimat has successfully completed the project for the design, manufacture, assembly and commissioning of two biomass heaters for the Termosolar Borges plant. Having successfully passed the performance tests, both heaters, fed with woody biomass and with a power of 20.5 MW, are now working in hybrid mode with a field of parabolic trough solar receivers up to 390ºC. In addition to the boilers, Sugimat developed the heat recovery systems, integral control system and emission treatment. Hybridization of thermal solar energy with biomass increases the plant’s operating time to 150%. In this way, an unmanageable energy asset such as a solar concentration plant is transformed into a manageable one, given that the plant can continue to produce electricity at night or on days without sun. Manageable plants with renewable energy are those required to carry out the decarbonization process, complementing the strong input of photovoltaic and wind power, thus guaranteeing the stability of the system and the balance between generation and consumption.

test center, upgrading the testing capabilities to a whole new level with added automation and capacity. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, many phases of the construction process were managed remotely. “This kind of flexible problemsolving has been typical for the whole construction project, and it has kept us on schedule. Hats off for the whole team that made it possible!” says Development Manager Matti Kaunisto. The nearly 4,000 square meter facility is a vast improvement both in terms of testing quantity and quality. “For example, the drum testing capacity grew significantly,” says R&D Director Kalle Kaivonen. “The product development and OEM collaboration are much more efficient. Thanks to the added capacity, the earlier bottlenecks in testing have been elimi-

nated. And there is plenty of room for future investments.” The new machinery encompasses more data and better analysis. The whole testing process from installation to measurements and 3D scanning, from pressure testing to section-cutting is optimized to provide quality data efficiently for different information needs. “Different kinds of tests and analysis can be ordered by a product development team, customer service or by a machine manufac-

turer, for example,” Kaivonen adds. Special attention was paid to the safe and ergonomic handling of the tires and wheels. For example, the process where the tire segments are scanned with a high-resolution scanner and transferred digitally fits well with today’s social distancing requirements. There’s hardly any waste that isn’t recycled and the heat generated by the test equipment is gathered for heating the facility, and more heat is generated by the local biofuel plant.

Tigercat Expands Mulcher Lineup Tigercat adds to its mulcher lineup with the release of the 760B mulcher and the 4061-30 mulching head. The 760B was designed primarily for silviculture applications. Forestry companies require the capability to efficiently clean up residual post-harvest forest debris and grind stumps to ground level. The 760B meets this requirement and the machine will also find application in large scale land clearing and ROW projects. In stable, well drained soil types, a high horsepower wheel driven machine has many advantages including quicker travel speeds, lower operating costs and the ability to run a wide mulching head for improved coverage and wider swaths, increasing quality and productivity. As such, Tigercat also designed a 3 m wide mulching head to complement the new carrier. The new 4061-30 mulching head is based on the original Tigercat 2.5 m 4061, with several updates and enhancements. The 2.5 m 4061 will be rebranded as the 4061-25 when similar updates are introduced in early 2021. The 760B will be standard equipped with boom float, LogOn (Tigercat’s wifi based machine monitoring system), ground level fueling and Tigercat’s WideRange transmission. The operator’s station was designed with operator comfort in mind, with a climate controlled seat, Bluetooth audio connectivity and ergonomic controls. Visit tigercat.com
