In-Woods Operations
The Great Opportunity
T
ake a look at our news section in this issue and you’ll see no shortage of announcements about industrial wood pellet plants—some proposed projects, some nearing startup, some just started up, further developments on some we had forgotten about. It’s an exciting time for a worldwide industry still in its infancy. Sometimes we’re guilty of focusing so much on the new pellet plants that we overlook what’s going on in the woods. That’s what prompted us to search for an inwoods operator who has bought—so far successfully— into this new wood fiber market. What better place to start looking than the supplier network for the world’s largest producer of wood pellets, Enviva. We have visited and published articles on Enviva’s wood pellet plants in Ahoskie and Garysburg, NC. The storage and movement of such a large supply of chips is fairly overwhelming as you walk the grounds of those plants, and begs the question: Who is doing the work in the woods? We learned that a healthy portion of it is being done by Tidewater Land & Timber and J&R Logging, which share an office in Pantego, NC, near the Atlantic Coast. We had a great visit to the J&R Logging in-woods operation and some excellent discussion with the principals. Alas, our cover story on Tidewater Land & Timber and J&R Logging begins on page 14. It’s really a story about a procurement forester, Stephen Tucker, and a logger, Joedy Cahoon, and how they’ve integrated their operations and expertise to become a big supplier of micro chips for Enviva. It’s also a strong lesson in maintaining business relationships, because Tucker’s relationship with Enviva fiber supply manager, Danny Maness, goes back some years—back to when Maness worked for Champion International. You remember Champion International don’t you? International Paper bought it out in 2000. Tucker meanwhile worked for Weyerhaeuser Co. Cahoon, a longtime producer of fuel chips, enters the picture back then as well. We’ll let you read the story—a very interesting one—to find out how all of that evolved into today’s impressive endeavor. Of course we also had a lot of interest in the chippers
6
that J&R Logging was running, and arrived to find a Continental Biomass Industries grinder and Bandit Industries chipper, both geared for producing micro chips. The article delves as well into how the operators settled on these particular units. Which brings us to a final point—that the number of excellent chipper and grinder machines offered by a dozen or so manufacturers is truly remarkable. We don’t envy those manufacturers as they compete for sales in that marketplace. We’re discovering that for many in-woods operations the decision of which chipper and/or grinder to go with is an excruciating one that comes after tons of due diligence. It’s worth it. The new industrial wood pellet industry is providing tons of demand.

June 18-20 near Hot Springs, Ark. Other exhibitors of record as of early January included Tuckers Truck, Texarkana Truck Center, Waratah, Cutting Systems, Quadco, Alliance Tire, VPG Onboard Weighing Systems, BITCO Insurance, and Farm Credit of Western Arkansas. A total of upwards of 75 exhibitors is expected, given the improving economy and a healthier forest products industry that is expanding in many locations, including Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. In keeping with the emergence of Tier 4f engine technology and other sophisticated machinery advancements, the theme for the event is ‘Tech Up.’ Sponsored by Arkansas Timber Producers Assn. (ATPA) and Hatton-Brown Publishers, the event will again be staged on a previously thinned pine plantation owned and sustainably managed by Weyerhaeuser Co. The tract is convenient-
ly located just off Arkansas highway 128, about 16 miles east of Hot Springs and about eight miles west of Interstate 30. Larry Boccarossa, ATPA Executive Director and manager of the show, notes the mid-year date was selected in an attempt to distance the expo from the threat of severe spring thunderstorms and/or tornados, which were issues in 2007 and 2011. “It will be a little warmer in June than April or May—average mid-June high in Hot Springs is only 84º—but warmer conditions are better than the threat of severe weather,” he reasons. “Another advantage to having the expo in June is that it will give families a chance to plan a vacation around it. There are lots of attractions to see in the Hot Springs area.” He notes the expo will incorporate on-site parking and special activities for children for the first time. Continuing education opportunities
will again be offered for loggers and foresters. First held in 2004, the show typically draws several thousand attendees from the ArkLaTex region and beyond. “With Hatton-Brown’s assistance, we’re promoting the 2015 Expo much more aggressively and expect record participation,” Boccarossa says. Portucel To Build Pellet Mill In Greenwood, SC Portucel Group, a leading paper manufacturer based in Portugal, plans to invest $110 million to build a wood pellet manufacturing facility in Greenwood, SC. The plant will produce 460,000 tons annually. Portucel’s facility will be located in the Emerald Road Industrial Corridor. The company expects to create 70 jobs. The Coordinating Council for Economic Development in South Carolina has approved a $150,000 grant to assist with the costs of road, site and infrastructure improvements as well as job development credits related to the project. “We are confident that we have found the right partners in South Carolina and that together we can provide a steady source of safe, reliable and renewable energy for the 21st century,” comments Portucel Group CEO Diogo da Silveira. The company states it has negotiated supply contracts with fixed price and tenure of 10 years, guaranteeing the sale of 70% of the new facility’s output. Portucel has total paper capacity of 1.5 million tons/year and eucalyptus pulp capacity of 1.3 million tons. Its activities are based at three large scale production mills in Portugal. The Group manages woodlands occupying some 296,400 acres in Portugal.
Pellet Mill Begins Construction This Year International WoodFuels President Steve Mueller reports its 500,000 ton production capacity wood pellet plant at Sims, NC and its receiving, storage and shipping infrastructure at the Port of Morehead City will be in construction this summer and shipping in the fall of 2016. The Port facility will include 80,000 tons of dome storage, rail and truck receiving, and 1,200

T/H of ship loading capacity. The pellet plant will produce industrial grade fuel some months of the year, and “thermal” EN+1A product other months, as per customer orders, which is why the storage facility will include two 40,000 ton domes and provide the flexibility to store low-ash biomass fuels for seasonal “just-in-time” supply.
Rentech Focuses On Pellet Plant Startups Rentech expects both of its Ontario pellet mills at Atikokan and Wawa to be producing pellets in 2015, according to an update of company operations prepared for the Wood Pellet Assn. of Canada Annual Conference held in November in Vancouver. The Atikokan facility, scheduled to produce 100,000 tonnes annually, was nearing production late in 2014, while the Wawa plant, with 450,000 tonnes annually, is expected to produce pellets for shipment in the second quarter of 2015. The two plants represent an acquisition and conversion cost of $105 million. Rentech purchased both de-commissioned composite board plant sites in 2013. The Wawa plant has a 10-year supply agreement with electricity producer Drax based in the UK. Rentech has a 15-year contract with the Wolfe’s Cover port terminal in Quebec City. Rentech purchased Fulghum Fibres in 2013 and operates 32 chip mills processing 15 million tons of wood fiber in the U.S., Chile and Uruguay. In 2014, Rentech purchased New England Wood Pellet and three plants with a combined capacity of 240,000 tons of bagged pellets annually. Rentech’s evolvement was enhanced last April with a $150 million investment from Blackstone/GSO. In December Rentech, Inc. announced today that D. Hunt Ramsbottom had resigned as CEO and president of Rentech to pursue other opportunities. Keith Forman, a member of Rentech Nitrogen’s

Drax Gears Up For Exciting Year UK electricity generator Drax said it continues to evaluate options for further biomass related capital investments, including development of U.S. East Coast pellet operations. The company is already building pellet plants in Gloster, Miss. and
Bastrop, La., with startups scheduled in the first half of 2015, and is reportedly looking at building one near McComb, Miss. The company reports it continues to make good progress with its ongoing transformation to a predominantly biomass-fueled electricity generator. It completed the conversion of one coal unit to biomass in May 2013, and completed a second unit conversion in October 2014. It plans to convert a third unit between
July 2015 and June 2016. Commissioning of the new on-site biomass facilities at Drax is complete and all four storage domes are now in service. The company is looking at converting a fourth unit as well. Drax reported on UK government investments in low carbon electricity generation, including the introduction of Contracts for Difference (CfDs), which are long-term contracts. To avoid an investment hiatus in the renewables sector before the

CfDs become available, the government introduced a scheme for Investment Contracts under the Final Investment Decision Enabling mechanism. These are “early” CfDs intended to provide greater confidence for investors.
In December 2013, the government advised Drax that two generating units at Drax Power Station— the “second” and “third” unit conversions—were eligible for Investment Contracts. But in April 2014 the government notified Drax that
the second unit conversion was no longer eligible for an Investment Contract. However, Drax did not receive a satisfactory explanation for this decision and contested it in court. In July, following a High Court hearing, the Court declared that the second unit conversion was eligible for an Investment Contract. However, the government appealed this judgment to the Court of Appeal, and in August the Court allowed the government’s appeal and concluded that the second unit conversion was not eligible for an Investment Contract. Having taken legal advice, Drax decided not to appeal this decision.
GES Announces Chip/Pellet Mills Global Energy Solutions LLC (GES) intends to build a $20 million chip mill, followed by a large pellet plant and a port facility at the Port of Epes in west Alabama (Sumter County) on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. Construction on the chip mill, which will have the capacity of producing a million tons per year, will begin in the first quarter of next year, according to GES’ Scot Corbett. GES said the pellet plant could be a $120 million investment (1 million metric ton capacity) that could help in the development of the Epes Intermodal Facility (EIF).

Tidewater Land & Timber
Chipping For Pellets By Jay Donnell and Rich Donnell PANTEGO, NC s Enviva has emerged as a leader in industrial wood pellet production in the United States and the world, one of its primary suppliers of chips from the outset has been Tidewater Land & Timber LLC and affiliate J&R Logging, Inc. Stephen Tucker and Joedy Cahoon formed Tidewater Land & Timber in 2004 as a timber company to buy wood for Cahoon’s logging operation, a longtime producer of paper and fuel chips. Today, Tidewater Land & Timber not only works in conjunction with J&R Logging, which runs two chippers, but also contracts with six other logging operations. Four of these contract jobs run chippers, with Tidewater supplying two of those chippers.
A

While the contract jobs produce mostly fuel chips in addition to roundwood, J&R Logging produces mostly micro chips for Enviva’s operations. Good relationships and proven performance had a lot to do with Tidewater Land & Timber getting in on the ground floor when Enviva announced plans in 2010 to build a pellet mill in Ahoskie, NC at the site of a former Georgia-Pacific sawmill. By the end of 2011, The Ahoskie plant was shipping pellets to electricity generator markets in Europe.
Working Together Tucker, a 1993 forestry graduate of North Carolina State University, went to work for Weyerhaeuser and became acquainted with Danny Maness at Champion International. Champion purchased multiple products from Weyerhaeuser, and Tucker was Weyerhaeuser’s

forester at Plymouth, NC for fiber sales to Champion, while Maness was Weyerhaeuser’s procurement contact at Champion for buying the fiber into Champion’s Roanoke Rapids pulp mill. After International Paper bought Champion, Maness transferred to IP’s pulp mill in Franklin, Va. and became IP’s procurement contact with Tidewater Land & Timber, still working with Tucker, who had formed Tidewater Land & Timber with Cahoon. Tidewater and IP had strong business dealings until the Franklin mill closed in 2010. Maness retired from IP and went to work for Enviva to procure wood for the future Enviva plants. He and Tucker kept in close contact, both planning on Tidewater having a major sourcing role in Enviva’s future. “When we opened the Ahoskie pellet plant for wood receipts in October 2011, Tidewater brought the first load into the plant,” recalls Maness, who is Enviva’s Fiber Supply Manager. “Tidewater has grown steadily right along with Enviva and now Tidewater is a major supplier to Enviva’s three pellet plants and the two Dominion Power plants that Enviva sources. Tidewater is already looking to become a major player in Enviva’s Wilmington area operations to open in the near future.” Enviva’s entry into wood pellets began to fill the void in the hardwood chips market caused by the IP shutdown and Weyerhaeuser backing off on its hardwood intake at Plymouth. Following the startup at Ahoskie, Enviva has built and started up pellet plants, procuring mostly hardwood chips, in Northampton County, NC and Southampton County, Va. Enviva has more pellet plants in the works along the Atlantic Coast. “Hardwood didn’t have a whole lot of home around here,” Cahoon recalls. “The market was dying. When Enviva came along, it kind of picked up everything, and has made a lot of loggers a lot healthier.” Cahoon adds, “I’ve always run hog fuel chippers. I’ve always loved to chip because it leaves a clean looking job and when this opportunity with Enviva became available I thought it was too good to pass up and we were the first ones to jump on it. We were buying timber in the area and thought it would be a good fit and it has been an excellent fit.” As Enviva has grown, so has Tidewater Land & Tim-
Stephen Tucker and Jeff Bell at J&R Logging site
ber, which today provides more than 100,000 tons a year of micro chips, of which roughly 80% is hardwood, to Enviva facilities. Tidewater Land & Timber also supplies fuel chips through Enviva to the recently converted Dominion biomass power plants. “What I like about Tidewater is that they’re innovative and aggressive in the marketplace,” Maness comments. “They’re really flexible in looking at new products and new markets. “We felt the micro chipper was what we needed for pellet mills and they were the primary candidate,” he adds. Tucker says that the typical fuel chip they supply is 3⁄4 in. and larger, while the majority of their micro chips are 1⁄4 in. and smaller. J&R Logging today operates a 2011 Continental Biomass Industries 6400 track “Magnum Force” grinder and a 2013 Bandit Industries 3590 chipper with micro chip drum. Depending on the size of the tract, the chippers can be set up close together or not.
Chipping Force Enviva actually located the CBI grinder. A pellet mill was running it at the mill site, but wanted to convert to a stationary chipper. Enviva watched it in operation and

sampled the small chips. CBI had put a chipper rotor in it with four pockets and two 30 in. knives per pocket. A screening system held the chips until they were reduced enough to move out the discharge. Tidewater Land & Timber had a wood yard with about 5,000 tons of hardwood pulpwood piled up in anticipation of working with Enviva. They brought the CBI to the wood yard and demoed it, hauling the chips to Enviva so that Enviva could test the small chips and do production cost and savings analysis. “Enviva said this was doing what they wanted it to do and they wanted somebody to buy the machine, chip with it and bring them the chips,” Tucker recalls. “Obviously we were standing right there and we thought long and hard and weighed all the options and decided to give it a whirl.” Tucker likes the CBI’s big 1,050 HP Cat C27 engine, track mobility and interchangeable rotors for product versatility. “It’ll chip stuff that no other chipper will chip—blocks, butt cuts, wedges, cookies. Anything that will fit in that conveyor and go up there is going to come out a chip on the other end.” Cahoon bought the Bandit 3590 from Steve Ford with Ditch Witch of The Carolinas out of Charlotte, NC. Cahoon looked at several micro chip chippers and particularly liked the wood infeed handling stability of the Bandit. The 3590 includes Bandit’s micro chip drum that doubles the cuts per revolution with 16 knives compared to the standard Bandit drum. It works in conjunction with Bandit’s Card Breaker installed in the discharge, which works similar to a screening system in that it restricts oversized material from exiting the machine and helps to break down the chips further resulting in a more uniform chip. Cahoon notes that sometimes with the Bandit you can change a half a set of knives instead of a whole set.
16
J&R Logging merchandises for logs and chips.
The 30 in. capacity whole tree chipper has an 800 HP Caterpillar C27 engine. Cahoon says they do about 1214 loads on a set of knives. The bigger CBI will get up to 20 loads per set. In somewhat of an understatement, Tucker notes, “It takes a lot of timber to stay in front of this job running two chippers. Joedy and I talked about whether we could keep wood in front of them. With the added help of veteran timber buyer Rob Pennington, who hired on in October 2010, we’ve been doing it over a year now. The good thing about it is that when one of the chippers is down we’re still chipping. Enviva wants consistency and reliability and having two chippers sustains the flow to the mill.” Cahoon says they grease the chippers daily and change the knives at the end of the day so that they’re ready for the next morning. They change fluids on Saturday as well as tighten the chains. They blow off the chippers at the end of each day. Cahoon says the units come with a water tank and a fire extinguisher, but they’ve added extra extinguishers. They get their knives on the Bandit chipper from Bandit, and order knives for the CBI from Reimler Associate of Matthews, NC. “They’ll build any kind of knife for any machine you’ve got,” Cahoon says. “They have built me some for the Bandit. I had the holes cut different (elongated to allow for more adjustment as the knife gets shorter due to sharpening) and that’s going to give me probably about six more sharpenings off a set of knives. I’ve been trying them and it’s looking like that’s going to work.” Tucker says they’ve focused on younger, smaller, lower value stands. Their average tract of timber is more than 100 acres. “Typically it’s the kind of stand that needs to be knocked down and started over anyway,” he says. “Maybe a plantation that failed and didn’t have any pine on it or some that was cut and walked

away from and grew back naturally for 20 years and is hardwood regeneration.” Needing more wood to keep up with approximately 30 loads a day of chips, Cahoon expanded his logging equipment to complement the two chippers. The lineup now includes 720, 724E and 726B Tigercat cutters and a Tigercat 860 track feller-buncher; two 748H John Deere skidders and 630C and 620 Tigercat skidders; and a 234 and two 250B Tigercat loaders. They operate with nine chip vans, mostly ITI’s and a Peerless, and six trucks—five Kenworths and a Freightliner. Tucker calls foreman Jeff Bell “the logistics man, the labor man, the truck liner-upper, the mechanic, the babysitter, counselor and time keeper. He’s the one that makes sure everything gets done right.” Jeff also operates the Tigercat 234 loader. Meanwhile, as Enviva continues to expand, Tidewater Land & Timber continues to think along the same lines. Cahoon says they’re looking at adding another chipper to one of their contract logging crews. Cahoon has a lot of good things to say about Enviva. “I’m probably more satisfied with Enviva as a company than anyone I’ve ever worked for,” he says. “They care about you.” Tucker appreciates that Enviva wants a really well trained certified, pro logging force. “They have good ethics and do things in a professional manner,” he says. The feeling is mutual, according to Enviva’s Maness. “Stephen and Joedy are very open and straightforward so working with them has been great,” Maness says. “A good working relationship starts with listening to each other and being open with one another and that’s what we have going with Tidewater.” It’s also become somewhat of a family affair, as Joedy’s brother, Ronnie, operating as Cahoon Brothers Logging, also supplies chips to Enviva.

Hassell & Hughes Lumber
Pellet Profit Boost By Jessica Johnson COLLINWOOD, Tenn. he small town of Collinwood, Tenn. is like many in the forest products sector. Its livelihood is extremely dependent on the timber business. And for Collinwood, that means it is closely tied to Hassell & Hughes Lumber Co., Inc. The company has been around for 85 years, starting out in the business owning close to 100,000 acres. Over the years, the company has seen this acreage diminish due to generational changes and a split in ownership. However, the company and its shareholders still own approximately 16,000 acres in Hassell & Hughes Lumber markets their pellets Wayne and surrounding counties. under the GreenWay Pellets brand name. For the last 15 years the company’s main focus has been the manufacturing of hardwood flooring—that is until seven years ago. That’s when Hassell & Hughes saw an opportunity to diversify. GreenWay Pellets, a division of Hassell & Hughes Lumber, was born. Since raw materials were initially supplied 100% by residuals from the lumber surfacing operation and flooring plant, GreenWay Pellets has proven to be a good business move. Company President Jerry Hol- Production is 110 tons per day.

lis says, “It’s proven to be a good fit for us, since our raw materials are essentially free.” The pellet business is extremely cyclical, with only a few major customers, and that concerns Hollis to an extent, though fortunately the last two winters have proven to be very long and cold, thus ensuring a good market for their product. He says that the length of last winter, with it going so far and deep into this year, will mean another good year for pellets consumption and production. The steady stream of business has not only been good for Hassell & Hughes’ bottom line, but also for Hollis who came into the business sort of left-handedly last summer. He explains that his wife’s grandfather, Ralph Hughes, Sr., owned and ran the company for years, before passing away toward the end of 2012. Hollis’ father-in-law, Bob Haggard, took over at that time. Unfortunately, soon after taking the helm, Mr. Haggard suffered from an inoperable brain tumor and passed away in June 2013. “All of the success we’ve had over the last two years is a result of what these two gentlemen have put in place,” Hollis says with conviction. “We’ve done a pretty good job of staying out of

our own way. We’ve taken advantage of the good markets and expanded when given the opportunity.” Hollis adds that a large Jerry Hollis part of the company’s success during the transition of leadership has been due to the employees. The business employs 135 across all divisions. Hollis believes that from their foresters to their sales associates, the key people are in place.
Dust Procurement Senior Forester Johnny Heard, a longtime employee of Hassell & Hughes, procures logs and purchases tracts to keep the sawmill supplied with logs. He is also responsible for the management of company lands. Hollis says, “We try to manage our own properties well, not overcut. Manage it so it will be around for years to come.” Purchased tracts are usually within a 100-mile radius of Collinwood, and the company uses three contract logging crews. Logs and purchased timber, composed mainly of red oak, white oak and poplar, are fed to the main wood yard, which services the sawmill, flooring mill and pellet mill. Since Hassell & Hughes uses its residuals to make pellets, keeping a stocked wood yard and flowing sawmill is crucial.
Laidig bin with a reclaim auger system. All of the wood waste and finished product are pneumatically and mechanically conveyed using low pressure blower systems, screw conveyors and feeders, supplied by Rees-Memphis. The fugitive dust is filtered and recycled back into the process, maximizing waste utilization. The Rees-Memphis dust collection system consists of six material handling fans, three cyclones, and two reverse-air filters handling a total of 150,000 CFM. From the storage silo, the wood waste is meter-fed into a Precision vibrating conveyor and is then resized through a Bliss Industries hammermill before passing through the pelletizer. Italian pellet mill maker LaMeccanica provided the 15 KW pelletizer, which includes two rollers and has a die speed of 960 RPM. Finished pellets are then cooled, batch weighed and bagged for distribution with a Hamer 2080 FFS automated bagging system. All conveying systems are protected with a Flamex spark detection system and the warehouse is equipped with a sprinkler system. Hassell & Hughes has the capacity to process approximately 140 tons of pellets a day. Hollis says that wouldn’t be possible
Pellet Operations Rees-Memphis provided a dust collection system for Hassell & Hughes, which collects and gathers dust from both the lumber surfacing operation and the flooring mill. Rees-Memphis also provided the pneumatic conveying and wood grinding systems to feed the pellet mill. The dust collection system conveys sawdust to a 7000 cubic ft.
From the storage silo, waste is meter-fed into a Precision conveyor.

without the help of Billy Reed and Darwin Rich. Reed acts as the company’s head maintenance man who oversees a very competent and well equipped maintenance crew. Hollis simply says, “I don’t know what we would do without him.” Rich is the company’s pellet mill manager, who oversees all pellet production, including the possible expansion of a third pellet mill in the near future. At the start of 2014, in order to keep up with demand, Hassell & Hughes started running a second shift in the pellet mill. (Currently the flooring operation and sawmill at

Hassell & Hughes only run day shifts.) Hollis is happy with the addition of a second shift, saying that it has helped to overcome some of the increased demand. “It got to a point where everyone was out of pellets. Everything was sold and it was still winter and people still needed them,” he adds. Adding a second shift proved a little challenging in terms of raw material availability so Hassell & Hughes had to start buying some dry dust from the outside. Now firmly nestled in a second shift, Hollis reports production is up to 110 tons per day.
Hassell & Hughes commercially packages its pellets under the brand name GreenWay Pellets. GreenWay Pellets are sold in 40 lb. bags, 50 to a pallet, by the ton. Though Hollis says the bread and butter of sales is by the ton, they do sell some bulk pellets and are looking at additional opportunities for growth and expansion in this area. Pellets are marketed and sold all over the country. Hollis explains that the fairly different nature of pellet sales took some getting used to. “When I first came on, I wasn’t accustomed to a business model that had 85% of our sales going to only a

handful of customers.” However, Hollis quickly realized that’s how the world of pellets operates. “If you want to be in this business, those are the realities of how this industry operates,” he says.
ers. Hassell & Hughes owns quite a bit of land in Wayne County and generously donates its use to various organizations. For example, company land recently saw a truck and tractor pull fundraiser and the local police department regularly
uses it for a gun range. The company also donated property to assist in both the restoration of the old train depot and its conversion into a public library, as well as the building of a new fire hall for the city of Collinwood.
Local Impact The company is acutely aware of its dependence on the local community and does everything it can to participate and assist the community whenever possible. “For where we are located and what we do, our support of the local community is one of the most important things to us,” Hollis says. “Being the largest private employer in the county, we feel that it is our responsibility to support local community efforts.” The company tries very hard not to turn anything down in regards to community events and fundrais-

and development center in Sundsvall, Sweden. BioTrac is a hydrolysis system, which is used for process optimization and testing of raw materials based on biomass. BioTrac is flexible enough to include different raw materials and process alternatives and can be adapted to several downstream process steps. Hydrolysis is often the first step in a biorefinery. Further refining of the biomass can, for example, be production of bioethanol, bio based chemicals and biomaterial like bio based plastics. Hydrolysis is a chemical process that, under elevated temperature and pressure, makes cellulose and hemicellulose available to be split into different sugars and lignin in subsequent processes. The lignin is obtained as a solid residue. Both sugars and lignin can then be further refined.
Peterson Offers Largest Grinder
Peterson’s largest horizontal grinder
The new Peterson 6700D is Peterson’s largest horizontal grinder, and is designed for operations that need the most durable, highest output machine. Powered by a 1125 HP Tier II, Caterpillar C32 engine (or an optional Tier IVi Caterpillar C32 engine), the 6700D is designed for the toughest jobs. With a feed opening of 66 x 50 in., the 6700D can process large stumps that used to be reserved for tub grinders. The grinder is particularly suited for land clearing operations or other applications where mobility is desired. With the R+ package, the 6700D can be configured as a mid-speed grinder to handle heavily contaminated piles, or a high speed grinder for typical land clearing operations. process with an up-turning rotor and large grate area enables the 6700D to produce materials to exact specifications. Quick-change multiple grate system makes it easy to customize grate configurations to produce a variety of finished materials. Grates are removed through an enlarged access door on the side wall of the 6700D. The 6700D features Peterson’s Adaptive Control System, which controls all components of the feed system to optimize output. This system monitors the grinding load and varies the speed of the feed system to keep the engine working at the top of its power curve. It automatically accelerates the feed system when the engine load is light, slows when the load is high, and reverses if the engine speed drops. It monitors the engine temperature and varies the cooling fan speed to minimize power usage and reduce fuel consumption. A latching Impact Release System minimizes damage from contaminants in the feed material. The anvil and first grate open on a severe impact, allowing the contaminant to be ejected, and then re-latch to permit continuous grinding. Visit petersoncorp.com.

60 in. mulcher head powered by a single 110 cc hydraulic motor. It is a compact and capable attachment that turns any skidsteer loader into a Bandit forestry mulcher capable of dealing with brush and small trees. Versatile mulcher attachment The Model 60FM quickly attaches by using a quick attach plate to the front of any skid-steer loader in just a few quick steps. And because it operates straight from the skid-steer’s hydraulic systems, the Model 60FM requires very little maintenance to keep it in top form. The Model 60FM features 36 teeth arranged in a spiral pattern along the full length of the mulcher head. Each 1 5/8 in.-wide tooth creates a more aggressive mulching action, limiting the size of the bite. Visit banditchippers.com.
Valmet To Supply Fortum Power Plant Valmet will supply a flue-gas cleaning and condensation plant to Fortum’s combined heat and power plant in Joensuu, Finland. The new flue gas scrubber will increase the plant’s energy efficiency and district heating production capacity and decrease the power plant’s emissions. The plant will be ready for use in the fall of 2015, in time for the start of a new heating season. The value of the order is around EUR 8 million.
Hungarian Plant Opts For Metso Technology Hamburger Hungaria Power Ltd, a subsidiary of European containerboard manufacturer Prinzhorn Group, has ordered automation technology from Metso for its new power plant in Dunaujvaros, Hungary. ■ in the news 12 ➤ in water and wastewater treatment. Tannin is extracted from the bark of Acacia mearnsii (also known as Black Acacia or Black Wattle). After removing the bark, the remaining wood is chipped at TANAC’s chip mill; a proportion of these chips will provide the feedstock for the new pellet mill. All of TANAC’s own plantations are FSC Forest Management certified and local sourcing operations all carry FSC Controlled Wood certification. An important requirement under the Drax agreement is for an independent, carbon stock assessment to be conducted on the plantation area in the Rio Grande do Sul State every two years to ensure carbon stock levels are being maintained. TANAC’s pellet mill will be the largest in Latin America.
Biomass Power Plant One Step Closer Albany-Dougherty Payroll Development Authority approved a $250 million bond issuance for a possible combined heat and power biomass facility to be located at the Albany Procter & Gamble Paper Products Co. in Albany, Ga. The utility scale biomass plant would represent an investment up to $230 million of investment by Albany Green Energy, LLC. Albany Green Energy will be wholly owned by Constellation New Energy, which is providing financial backing for the project. With final PSC approval, Constellation will sell power created at the biomass plant to Georgia Power and will sell steam to P&G. The Albany facility, the sec-
ond-largest of P&G’s paper products plants, currently utilizes renewable energy from a biomass boiler that provides a large portion of the current steam load at the site. The new biomass project, along with associated upgrades within the manufacturing site, would allow P&G to offset a portion of its natural gas usage with renewable biomass from local sources. The project would help P&G meet its goal of increasing its usage of renewable energy to 30% by 2020. Beyond the advantages for P&G, the facility has the long term potential to also provide renewable steam for Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany, helping the base toward its efforts to become the U.S. Department of Defense’s first netzero installation.
