Love’s Labour Lost

owhere does hope spring as eternal as in the breast of a gardener when the new seed catalogues have arrived.

I had my nose buried in a catalogue and my mind in a garden furrow trying to decide between Pontiac and Viking seed potatoes when my daughter Hilary sat down on the footstool in front of me. She looked me straight in the eye and said "One word, Motherpotato beetles."

"That's two words," I protested, "And what on earth are you talking about?"

"You told me last fall that if you ever again considered planting potatoes in the garden, I was to say 'potato beetles' to bring you to your senses."

"So what are a few potato beetles?" I retorted.

"A few?" she laughed-a touch maniacally, I thought. "People walking past our garden thought you were developing a new species of flowering plant, they were so thick."

"Well, maybe I had a few problems with the potatoes," I agreed dispiritedly. "But hey", I said more cheerfully, "weren't those fresh peas terrific? Maybe we'll put the entire garden in peas."

"Ok," said Hilary, "Time for a reality check." She pulled her stool closer and shoved a photo in front of my face.

"What's this?' I asked. "It looks like the junkyard Old Man Tate used to have on the edge of town."

Hilary got that look again and handed me another piece of paper.

"You told me to be sure and show you this if I still hadn't convinced

you. See that list of expensesderris dust, cutworm powder, nitrogen, fertilizer, new garden hose to replace the one you cut, repairing the hole in the tool-shed, sprinklers, tools, scarecrows, tilling, etc. You said this list was the reason we couldn't afford to go to Disneyland."

I sighed. Of course she was right. Gardening is like having a baby; shortly after the birth, you forget just how bad the labour pains were. Selective memory is the only thing that keeps women propagating the species and prevents all homeowners from paving their backyards.

I closed the catalogue reluctantly, but as I tossed it aside, the heading on the back caught my eye. "Roses, roses," it proclaimed.

Now how much trouble can a few rosebushes be? I began to tremble with excitement. I could have the whole garden reworked and make a little cobblestone path and surround it all with trellises and trellises of roses.

Cold, frustrated, and scared, my daughter began to cry, which was a good thing.

I hit the gas. The wheels didn’t budge, but the grinding transmission alerted my daughter. She rushed out of the cabin, slamming the door shut behind her.

“I’m stuck,” I yelled.

She nodded. “Let’s see, if we can rock it.”

I gunned the engine, she pushed. She pushed, I gunned the engine. The car only sank deeper into the sand.

“We’ll get help tomorrow,” I said. “Let’s go in and call it a day.”

We reached the door. It didn’t open.

Searching the car, I found a flashlight. Then we went to visit the lady camper we had seen on our way in. The woman graciously directed us to a nearby pay phone and the emergency numbers posted there.

I called the police who told me to dial 911. The 911 operator reassured me that “yes” the park office was now closed for the weekend, and “yes” they would try to track down the ranger, and “no” they didn’t have any authority to enter park cabins. The operator’s voice suddenly faded into something like “. . . we’ll call you back” and then the connection was Page 1 gone.

Staring at the dead phone, I heard a faint, “Mommy?”

In the dim glow of the flashlight, my daughter’s small face looked drawn, her eyes wide with fear. She inched closer.

“Everything will be all right,” I said pulling her to a nearby bench.

When I tightened my arm around her, I felt her shiver.

Wondering if that promised call would ever come, I considered our options.

We could ask the lady camper for shelter or we could spend the night in the car, turning the engine on and off. We had not unloaded everything, and there was a blanket in the backseat.

I thought of Bandit being alone with that glowing space heater. I had to do something, like contact the park office. Although it was supposed to be closed, I felt driven to call there anyway.

After positioning the flashlight next to the phone, I dialed, ever so careful not to mess up. Time was of the essence, and my pocket change was limited.

It rang. Once, twice—then a man’s voice said, “Park Ranger’s office.”

I screamed, “You’re really there?”

“Yes, I’m here.” He was nice enough not to ask if I was all there.

But then, it would have been difficult for him to say anything else, since I was gushing, desperately trying to make him understand the urgency of our situation.

He let me finish, then simply said, “I’ll be there shortly.”

About ten minutes later, he arrived. No man had looked that good to me in a long time.

“We never answer that phone over the weekend,” he said. “I was leaving to go home when you called. It rang and I just reached for it. Good thing I did, huh?”

He unlocked our door. Then he pointed at our car. “You’re in way deep, aren’t ya? I’ll bring the tractor in the morning and pull you out.”

He grinned. “Are you OK now?”

“She’s over the hill,” my daughter volunteered.

I nodded. “She’s right, I’m fifty today.

The man’s laughter rang through the dark forest. Walking back to his truck, he turned and waved, “Happy Birthday!”

Inside the cabin, my daughter sank into my arms. We held onto each other and giggled hysterically.

It felt wonderful to be safe and warm.

After unpacking the cake my daughter had baked for me the day before, we lit a tiny candle. As the yellow light flickered and threw a shadow across the barren walls of the little room, I felt very happy and grateful.

The remainder of the weekend turned out exactly the way I had pictured it: quiet walks through the woods, simple meals, intimate chats and lots of laughter with my daugh ter.

I couldn’t have wished for a more perfect milestone birthday celebration.

“I thought so,” the attractive sixtyish woman said. “But it was wide open when I returned home, and my jewelry was gone. So was my lovely music box.” She wiped away a tear. “It was the last present my late husband ever gave me.”

arn Swallows are one of Alberta’s most beautiful birds.

Unfortunately, these graceful and acrobatic swallows have the habit of sometimes choosing inconvenient places to nest (e.g., above backdoors, on stucco walls, in garages). The mess they create can make them unpopular with their human neighbours.

Barn Swallows have had a long, interesting and complicated history with people. Prior to European settlement, they were restricted to nesting in caves and on cliff faces and other natural nesting sites.

In 2011, COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada) declared them to be a threatened species.

Scientists first noticed population declines in the mid-1980s.

Some local declines can be attributed to the reduction in the number of nesting sites because old open barns are disappearing and

host a healthy nesting population of Barn Swallows. The old grain elevator and calving barn, with their open windows and rough beams, provide ideal sites for the birds to raise their one or two broods a year.

We are also pleased to see them nesting on the Wetland Centre as well as under the verandah of the new Visitor Centre.

Unlike their cousins, the Tree Swallows and Purple Martins, which are gone by mid-August, Barn Swallows continue nesting well into September.

Despite the mess they can cause when they nest in inappropriate spots, it is our hope that everyone will learn to welcome their presence. They can be encouraged to nest in suitable locations by placing a couple of nails or a small wooden triangle a few centimetres under an eave or other overhang, or by setting out a nesting cup.

If they nest in a location where their mess is an issue, a small pail or piece of thin plywood or cardboard placed under the nest will intercept all droppings.

This year, Ellis Bird Farm is embarking on a Barn Swallow education and conservation initiative in partnership with Bird Studies Canada. We have a new display at the site highlighting the plight of Barn Swallows, as well as information about how we as

individuals can help them by setting out nesting structures and monitoring nesting success. Our webcams are also an important way for site and online visitors to watch their goings on.

These bug hunters provide significant ecosystem services, far outweighing any inconvenience they might cause. If our great grandchildren are to be awed by the grace and beauty of these winged acrobats, we need to put out the welcome mat (cup) for them! * * *

Comparisons are as bad as cliches.

Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.

One-word sentences?

Eliminate.

Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.

The passive voice is to be ignored.

Eliminate commas, that are, not necessary. Parenthetical words however should be enclosed in commas.

Never use a big word when a diminutive one would suffice.

Understatement is always the absolute best way to put forth earth-shaking ideas.

If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: Resist hyperbole; not one writer in a million can use it correctly.

Puns are for children, not groan readers.

Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.

Even IF a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.

Who needs rhetorical questions?

Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
