eorge slowly became aware that Hannah was watching him and peered at her over the top of his Zane Grey western. When they made eye contact, she cleared her throat and began with those words dreaded by husbands everywhere, “George, we have to talk.”
His mind darted through all the possible horrors that lay ahead . . .
redecorating, furniture rearranging, a new 500 calorie a day diet, or the final thought that sent a shudder echoing through his entire six foot frame—Hannah’s mother was coming to visit! It’s not that George disliked his mother-in-law. It’s just that she could meddle—oh Lord could she meddle. “George...” he brought his mind back. Better listen to what she had to say and get it over with. He lay his book over the arm of his chair, open at his stopping point. It didn’t matter, really. He’d read this one so many times he nearly knew

Attention Shoppers
In a upscale department store, every night at closing time one of our customer service representatives reminds shoppers over the public address system to finish their shopping. One evening, a woman who had recently worked at Walmart
opened the announcement by saying, "Attention Walmart shoppers..." Quickly realizing her mistake, she tap-danced her way out of trouble by adding, "...you are in the wrong store!"

the next couple of days coughing and grumbling. On the third day he felt better but took the rest of the week off anyhow. No sense spreading the germs around work. He wandered around the house looking for things to keep himself occupied. George had never noticed before the disorganized state of Hannah's cupboards so, on Wednesday, he reorganized the spices, logically and alphabetically. On Thursday he weeded the flower garden while Hannah was visiting next door. On Friday Hannah was busy in the kitchen making a cake for tomorrow’s church meeting. It was her turn to provide dessert, so George offered his help. “Sift the flour into that bowl with the baking powder and salt,” she said and went back to creaming her ingredients. George rummaged for the required additions and passed the bowl to Hannah to add to her creation. He had to admit, Hannah was a terrific cook. Her cakes always were a hit. This Saturday, something went wrong. Hannah dished out plates of her sliced black cherry chocolate cake with double chocolate frosting and noticed no one was eating it. Everyone did the same thing—took a bite, made a face, and set down their fork. She picked up a slice herself. No wonder her cake hadn’t risen the way it usually did! Her expression darkened. “I’ll kill him,” she said.
For George had somehow substituted onion powder for the baking powder. It would be months before Hannah could hold her head up at a committee meeting.
Hannah arrived home ready to take a strip off George for his carelessness. First he mixed up her spices so that she couldn’t find anything, then he weeded out her prize blooms in the flower garden, leaving the weeds behind, and now this. George met her at the door with a smile. “I’ve made a pot of tea.” he
said. “Come sit down. I want to talk to you.” Before she could sear him with a blistering attack, he began, “I’ve been thinking over what we were talking about earlier. You know—the retirement thing?” “Retirement? George Kilburn are you out of your mind? What put that into your head? Don’t you know what happens to men that retire early? They fade away and die because they’ve lost interest.” Or maybe their wives kill them first. “Put that idea out of your mind right now. Besides, how would they cope at the store without you?” “Well, maybe you’re right,” George backed down awfully quickly Hannah thought to herself. But a good thing. How would she ever run a home with him lying about all day, getting under her feet and pulling out her flowers and ruining her cakes? Good thing she convinced him of the folly of early retirement.

Thanks heavens he’d be back to work on Monday. Life would be back to normal. George retired to his recliner, his Zane Grey open, hiding the smile on his face. It worked rather well he thought, thinking back to the spice cupboard, the flower garden and the cake. Hannah, bless her, sometimes needed a prod in the right direction, but things went much smoother when she felt she was in charge. He was looking forward to going back to work on Monday!

Robbed!
Joy of Baseball By Holly Stanger

Encyclopedias
Working as a computer instructor for an adult-education program at a community college, I am keenly aware of the gap in computer knowledge between my younger and older students. My observations were confirmed the day a new student walked into our library area and glanced at the encyclopedia volumes stacked on a bookshelf. "What are all these books?" he asked. Somewhat surprised, I replied that they were encyclopedias. "Really?" he said. Someone printed out the whole thing?" * * *
So apparently the security guard at the grocery store didn't believe that life gave me that lemon.

ally Peale flattened herself in the back corner of Maureen Mitchell’s bedroom closet, hiding behind the longest evening gown. “This makes no sense, Sally,” Maureen’s nephew, Brian, shouted from somewhere near at hand. “I know you’re upstairs. You can’t escape.” Sally choked back a sob. She’d really thought Brian loved her. No way had she ever expected him to turn on her like this.
Warning: Lake levels may be lower than shown since depths were taken in the past.
Once more Sally saw Maureen plunge down the staircase. Once more she saw the expression on Brian’s face, the hardness in his eyes, as he turned that horrible stare upon her. She’d stumbled backwards, away from him, tried to talk and reason with him, but he was beyond listening, his once handsome looks twisted into a mask of rage. Then, suddenly, he’d come at her, and all she could think was to protect herself. She’d grabbed up the small potted plant from the table on the landing near the head of the stairs and swung it. By some miracle she’d connected. Then, she’d run. She hadn’t been able to get downstairs – Brian had staggered to his feet in time to block access – so she’d run the opposite direction, turned the corner of the upstairs hall and dived into one of the rooms, Maureen’s bedroom as it

turned out. A quick glance from the window and she’d known it was out as an escape route. No tree nearby, no trellis, nothing. Just the cactus garden two stories below. So she’d ended up in the closet, hoping Brian would not find her. “You can’t escape, do you hear me.” Brian sounded even closer than before, so close she could even smell his aftershave and hear his heavy breathing. What am I going to do, Sally thought. Oh what am I going to do? The closet door jerked open. Sally snapped her eyes shut and held her breath. No! Please, no. Ten, fifteen, twenty seconds passed, and nothing happened. She opened her eyes, saw light from the bedroom spilling in, but only part way. Not far enough to
expose her hiding place. Thank goodness he hadn’t bothered to turn on the closet light. “You’re leaving me no choice, Sally.” Still shouting, but now also sounding a little weary, he added “I wanted to talk to you first, but....” The floorboards creaked as he moved away. Sally sucked in fresh breaths of air. Talk to me first? And then what? A terrible thought hit her, one she should have considered sooner. She shoved the dresses aside, stepped toward the open closet door. She must get out of this house at once! Sally peeked around the edge of the closet opening. If he was still in the room...if he saw her.... But he wasn’t. Then where? The terrible thought tore at her again. Got to get out of here fast.

Still, Sally didn’t move from the closet.
Precious seconds ticked away as she shrunk back into its shadows, thinking, gathering courage.
She needed a plan, a strategy. He was out there, somewhere in the house, in the hall...in one of the rooms...upstairs, or maybe even downstairs. Waiting. She could never expect to take him by surprise again. He was much stronger then her. She probably couldn’t outrun him either. Once more Sally crept forward to peek out the closet’s door. Still clear. Her glance moved around the room, took in the bed and its frilly spread, the large walnut dresser and the mirror above it. She needed something to defend herself with, but would there be such a thing in this room? She didn’t have time to go through all the drawers. Brian might be back in any second and start searching more thoroughly, and then.... Please, let there be something. What was that – on the top of Maureen’s dresser? Something shiny. Sally rushed from the closet, grabbed up the gleaming object. A small scissors. It would have to do. She crept to the main doorway, heart pounding. Now or never. She stepped into the hall. All clear. She reached the hall’s corner, sucked in a breath, shoved back her long black hair with a shaking hand and made the turn.

Sight Fright
Michelle sucked in her breath as she beheld the ruins before her. How awful! Just the sight made her skin crawl. Something had to be done and fast. Steeling her nerves, Michelle bent to the task of cleaning her teenager’s bedroom.
Try Smiling
Mark trembled as the bright light hit him full in the face. Too late now to make his escape from the tiny room; the masked figure was already leaning over him, eyes glinting. Mark shuddered and opened his mouth so the dentist could begin. * * *
Zachary
Blizzard Police
While driving through Edmonton after a heavy snow storm, a motorist noted a policeman, standing waist deep in snow, directing traffic. Feeling sorry for him, the motorist called out "I'm sorry you have to work half buried in the snow." The policeman called back, "Don't feel sorry for me, feel sorry for my horse!"
My son Zachary, 4, came screaming out of the bathroom to tell me he'd dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. So I fished it out and threw it in the garbage. Zachary stood there thinking for a moment, then ran to my bathroom and came out with my toothbrush. He held it up and said with a charming little smile, "We better throw this one out too then, 'cause it fell in the toilet a few days ago."

Still no Brian. The stairs were up ahead. She must get down them fast. Sally grasped the railing and plunged down, feet flying. Get to the door, make a run for it. She could do it. She was stepping over Maureen’s twisted figure at the bottom when Brian sprang out of the shadows. “Got you!” His large hands locked on her left wrist, twisted it painfully. “No!” Sally swung the scissors with her free hand, heard him cry out and2017-03-18 felt his grip loosen. She1swung harm 12.qxd 12:05 PM Page the scissors again, and he was no longer holding her at all. “You stabbed me!” He fell back, pressed a hand to his shoulder. Sally raced past, the scissors slipping from her fingers as she clawed at the front door knob. Then she had the door open and tore outside, tripping on the porch step as the bright Arizona sun blinded her. She threw a hand to her eyes. “Stop!” Oh no, he was right behind her.
She sprinted toward the road without looking back, heard another sound. Sirens. “Help!” Sally stumbled to a stop as one squad car, then a second, screamed around the corner. “Help me! Please. He’s—” “Easy, ma’am,” a big cop said leaping from one of the cars. She clutched at the man’s shirt, tears smearing her vision. “He killed her...his Aunt Maureen. He tried to kill me too.” “Wait a minute. Slow down. Who—” “Brian Cullen. It was awful. He pushed her down the stairs. When he saw I’d seen him he trapped me in the house. If I hadn’t found a pair of scissors to protect myself with I’d be dead, too.” She heard a footstep behind her, released her grip on the policeman’s shirt and swung around. Brian had moved to within only a few feet of her.
PHARMACIES
“Keep him away from me! Please, don’t let him hurt me!” “That’s far enough, Mr. Cullen,” the big cop said. He turned back to Sally as two other cop’s blocked Brian’s pathway. “Now, ma’am, you were saying—” “He’s a murderer.” “And the victim, ma’am?” “Haven’t you been listening to me? His aunt. I saw it all. He shoved her down the stairs. Then he tried to kill me.” “Then why’d he phone us, ma’am?” “Phone...you?” Sally stared at the cop’s sober face, and her terrible thought returned, the thought that Brian would call the cops. Then, suddenly, Sally turned and charged around the other cops, pounding Brian with her fists. “I did it for you, Brian. For us. Don’t you see that? With all the money you’ll inherit, and the house and property, we could’ve married and been set for life!” She continued screaming as strong arms grabbed her, as the police snapped handcuffs on her wrists and took her away.

ho knew that a lowly dove would hold the title for being the fastest spreading invasive bird species ever recorded in North America? Even the rapid dispersal of our continent’s two most famous and insidious invaders – house sparrows and European starlings – pales in comparison to the speed with which the Eurasian collared-dove has spread since it was first documented in Miami, Florida in 1982. It arrived on U.S. soil via the Bahamas, where some individuals escaped

from a pet shop during a mid-1970s burglary. The shop owner then released the rest of his stock – about 50 birds. Apparently, there was another release of individuals on the island of Guadeloupe in 1976, just before a forecasted volcanic eruption.
It took these doves only a decade to spread all the way from Florida to Alaska.
Their dispersion has followed a northwesterly direction, with the most rapid expansion tracking along a southeast-tonorthwest path between the two areas.
Warning: Lake levels may be lower than shown since depths were taken in the past.
Judy Boyd, coordinator for the Central Alberta Christmas Bird Count (CBC), reports that Eurasian collared-doves were first documented in Central Alberta in 2005, with nine individuals
counted. CBC records confirm an increase: from the four individuals recorded in 2006 to 20 documented at feeders at the most recent count held on December 18, 2016.

Eurasian collared-doves are so named because their nape is ringed by a black half-collar. They are quite large and can be easily distinguished from our only native dove—the summerdwelling mourning dove—by their larger size, squarish tail, black collar and distinctive, rhythmic threeparted coo. Eurasian collared-doves prefer highly modified landscapes over forested areas, so they are typically found around human habitation, not in more remote or natural habitats. At a feeding station, they will dine on sunflower seeds (they gobble the seed, shell and all), wild bird mixes, millet, milo, wheat and cracked corn. It appears that these birds are non-migratory, choosing to remain year-round in their newly settled regions. Although they are obviously hardy, many of the birds that I have photographed exhibited severely frost-bitten toes (either stubs or festering sores on their feet), an obvious ravage of extremely cold temperatures to which they have not yet become acclimatized. It remains to be seen what, if any, impact these new and very successful newcomers will have on the ecosystems they are invading. Myrna Pearman is an Alberta biologist, author & nature photographer.

Meet for Lunch
The teacher of the earth science class was lecturing on map reading. After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees and minutes the teacher asked, "Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude . . .?" After a confused silence, a voice volunteered, "I guess you'd be eating alone."

aggie Fairchild cast an anxious look around the large sitting room as she picked up her purse to leave. "Are you sure about this Mother? Do you really like it here?" "What's not to like? Lots of activities, and the food is excellent." Annabelle Fairchild lowered her voice and her expression became serious. "It was my decision dear and I'm happy I made it." "But are you making friends?" Annabelle smiled. "We've switched roles, haven't we? I used to ask you that every year on the first day of school." Maggie retained the worried look. "If you change your mind, you can still move in with me." Annabelle patted her daughter's hand. "I'm going to be fine, and you
have your own life to consider." A shadow fell across the nearby chair and a deep voice asked," Are you still set for that game of crib, Annabelle?" The speaker was a tall, still handsome senior with lustrous gray hair and warm, brown eyes. Maggie noticed her mother's face light up as she introduced her daughter to Ted Matthews. "Annabelle has told me all about you," he replied. "And this is my son Brian." He gestured to the man who stood slightly behind him. Maggie

could have easily guessed at the relationship. The thick hair in the junior edition was dark brown instead of grey but the eyes had the same humor evident in the blue sparkle as he greeted Maggie. Annabelle fidgeted as though anxious for her daughter to leave so Maggie gave her a final peck on the cheek and turned to go. "I'll walk you out, if that's all right. I'm just leaving too." The humour lines deepened around Brian's eyes as he reached out to touch her elbow. As they came out of the elevator on the lower level, he turned and stopped. "Look, I'd just about kill for a cup of coffee. Would you join me?

There's a little cafe across the street." Maggie was almost going to put him off but the thought of her mother's perky smile when her new friend had dropped by made her want to learn more about the man, and of course his son as well. They sat in a window booth sipping black coffee in large white mugs. "I'm glad to see Dad making a friend," Brian said. "He's been lonely since Mom died.
I've been away a lot recently and haven't been able to spend nearly enough time with him. All we have is each other now." A tiny voice inside Maggie said, Oh that must mean you're not married, but she stifled it, instead replying, "Same goes for Mom and I. I was so worried she'd be lonely here." "I know the feeling," Brian said. "It's just as easy to be lonely in the middle of a crowd." He pushed aside the nearly empty cup, hesitating for a moment before looking up at Maggie. "I'm coming on Saturday to take Dad out for dinner. Would you and your mother like to come too? I'd like to give their friendship a bit of a nudge. I hope you don't mind." "Not at all," said Maggie. "I'm happy to see Mom making friends. This would be an opportunity to encourage them. I'll ask her if it's all right but I'm sure it will be." Saturday's dinner was a raving success. So was the Sunday picnic and the trip to the theatre the following weekend. Maggie was relieved to know her mother wasn't going to be lonely any more. She liked Ted and thought
Weight Loss
Having lost weight over the past few years, a lady was discarding things from her wardrobe that no longer fit. Her seven-year-old niece was watching as she held up a huge pair of capris. "Wow," the lady said, "I must have worn these when I was 183." Her niece looked amazed, then asked, "How old are you now?"
they made a great couple. It seemed Cupid took aim at the elderly as well as the young. She found herself happily anticipating their outings—she caught herself in time from referring to them as double dates. She realized her mother's happiness was only part of the reason she looked forward to the weekends. Brian was comfortable to be around and she hadn't done so much laughing in years. And of course there were those amazing blue eyes.
One Sunday afternoon Annabelle and Ted were seated in chairs close to the third floor window and Ted pointed below at the image of Maggie and Brian standing face to face beside a tall tree in the corner of the parking lot. They watched as Brian leaned over and kissed Maggie on the cheek holding her hands as he did so. She didn't pull away. "Told you so," said Ted in a triumphant voice. "I knew it would work," giggled Annabelle. "From the moment I met your son, I knew he was meant for Maggie." They gave a quick high five before changing their celebration to a gentle kiss mirroring the one below.

oor Mom! She’s gone the way of the dodo. She’s been replaced by Google. Mom used to be the one you went to for answers to all life’s problems. How do you do a popcorn stitch in crochet? Ask Mom. How do you make a soufflÊ that won’t drop in the middle? Mom will know; ask her.
Story Shorties
Disintegrated Love
Two masseuses fell for one another, but their relationship didn’t last. Each had control issues that rubbed the other the wrong way.
By Guy Belleranti
Man at Work
Richard opened his office door and the knob came off in his hand. He sighed, stepped forward and tripped over a loose edge of carpet. Grabbing for something to break his fall, he caught hold of the arm on the nearest chair and felt it give way with a loud crack. It was beginning of another typical Monday at the Institute of Quality Control.
Who was prime minister during WWII? Mom will know and if she doesn’t, she’ll ask Grandma. If the question got a little complicated she might send you for the answer to the set of Encyclopedia Britannica that held pride of place in the living room. It wasn’t that Mom didn’t know the answer, oh no! It’s only that she felt sometimes you should do a little research yourself. Now the Encyclopedia Britannica has changed to an online version. And of course it sometimes gets a little complicated and verbose, so it’s easier to look up a short answer on Wiki. For everything else, there’s Google. How does Mom feel about her replacement—does she feel relief or Techno Ad Article 2017 2.qxp_Layout 1 2017-03-24 disappointment at her enforced redun-11:28 PM dancy? My guess is that if you go to ask her, you’ll find her in front of her computer, planning her retirement and consulting Google.
Road Rage
Ken made a left, heard someone shout, and steered as far to the right as possible. He had narrowly missed running into an elderly woman. Several passersby gave him dirty looks, and he hung his head. Too many people out tonight. Never again would he push a shopping cart through a grocery story on the evening before a holiday.
Waiting Worry
Shari glanced at her watch again and rustled the tattered magazine, feeling more uneasy than ever. The man on her left hacked out another cough, and the man on her right kept sneezing. By the time she was called in for her wellness checkup, she’d be sick. ***
Back Problems
Because of back problems, each night I lie on the floor and do exercises. Once when we stopped at a motel, as I started my exercise, something under the bed caught my eye. It was a card, on which was written "Yes, we do clean under here, too."

To add more light to your space, switching out your incandescent bulbs for an LED can give you the desired effect and drastically reduce energy consumption. With incandescent lighting you had a choice of yellow or yellow. LEDs offer pure, natural and warm light options. It’s a matter of Upgrade your RV incandescent bulbs to LED personal preference. For example, using the warm light is best for reading at night because it’s easier to fall asleep afterward. Changing to LED usually requires only bulb replacement. LED strip lighting is also a popular choice and can be customized to Commercial Quality Lighting Strips and Accessories length for lighting projects under cabinets, counters, awnings, boats,

When Diane found out she was pregnant, she told the good news to anyone who would listen. Her 4-year-old son overheard some of his parents' private conversations. One day, when Diane and her 4-year-old were shopping, a woman asked the little boy if he was excited about the new baby. "Yes!" the 4-year-old said, "and I know what we are going to

Bank Inquiry
One of my jobs at a bank is to answer the phones and put callers through to the right person. When a customer called one day asking to speak with a bank representative, I said, "Of course, Sir. What is it about exactly?" Dryly, he replied," It's about money."
