Doctor Game
A pediatrician in town always plays a game with some of his young patients to put them at ease and test their knowledge of body parts. One day, while pointing to a little boy's ear, the doctor asked him, "Is this your nose?" Immediately the little boy turned to his mother and said, "Mom, I think we'd better find a new doctor!"
My School
The board of education in a nearby town sold off a building that had been a one-room schoolhouse, which the buyer converted into a tavern. One day an elderly man was walking by the place with his granddaughter. The old man pointed to the building and said, "That's where I used to go to school." "Really?" asked the girl. "Who was the bartender then?"

Too Distant
The showers in my daughter's dorm turned scalding hot whenever a toilet was flushed. To warn others, residents would yell out, "Flushing!" each time they flushed the toilets. During one of my daughter's visits home, a friend stopped by to chat for a while. I was explaining how my daughter was acting more distant now that she was in college, and that she didn't tell me all about her life the way she used to. Suddenly we heard my daughter call out from the bathroom, "Flushing!" "Wow!" said my friend, "How much more do you want to know?"

ani motioned to a comfortable chair. “Have a seat Lacey," She sat down again behind her desk and smiled at her afternoon appointment. She went on, "And congratulations on your engagement.” The tall slim taffyblonde girl with wide mouth and ready smile responded. “Thanks, Mrs. Hawthorne.” “Call me Dani. We’re going to be working closely together for the next few months.” “You remember me from school, don’t you? I knew Matt.” “Of course. You and my son were friends. That’s why I’m really excited to get a chance to help arrange your wedding.” Lacey went on, "You were friends with my Dad, too, after he and Mom got divorced.” “Yes,” said Dani, and a picture came unwanted into her mind of the easy-going but shy man with the wide-mouthed smile he shared with his daughter. It was the only decent relationship she'd had since her husband Ted had died. Well, she'd thought it was
going well; Stephen apparently viewed it differently. To stem the direction of the conversation she said, “Let’s go tour the facilities first. Then we’ll come back and talk about details.” As she went over the venue with Lacey, her mind kept drifting to the girl’s father.
They had dated a few times and Dani thought the relationship was on its way to becoming serious.
Then for some reason she had yet to determine, it stalled. Stephen quit calling. She spent nights wondering if she had said or done something wrong. At first, she thought maybe Stephen had reconciled with his wife, but she found that wasn’t the case. Reluctantly, she let it go. As they pored over possible menus for the wedding dinner, Lacey said, “Dad’s coming to meet me here. He wanted to have a look at the function room.” “Oh,” was all Dani could

Preparing for a family vacation, Kathy and Matt explained to their young children that they would be sitting in the car for a very long time. The kids were told they would not be arriving at their destination until after dark, and were warned not to keep saying, "Are we there yet?" After a few minutes of peaceful driving, four year old Rachel perked up, "Is it dark yet?"
Passport Picture
Unfortunately, getting a new passport required a new photo. As I handed my ten-year-old passport and the new picture to the clerk, I sighed. "I like the original better," I told her. "Trust me," she said. "Ten years from now, you'll like this one."

think of to say. She really didn't want to see Stephen again. She had hoped the wedding arrangements would be strictly Lacey's turf. Of course the mother of the bride was usually involved and Dani thought with a shudder that might prove to be worse. Especially if Lacey's mother had the same forthright attributes as her daughter. She quelled her thoughts and tried to get back the enthusiasm she usually felt for her job. It was a dream job actually; most of the functions she arranged were weddings. Overseeing them appealed to Dani's innate romanticism. It was only a few minutes later that a knock came at the side of the open door. Stephen poked his head around the corner. “Can I come in?” Lacey and Dani took him for a guided tour and as Lacey slipped off to the cloakroom, Stephen turned to Dani. “I’ve been putting this off a long time, but I came here partly to see you.” “Oh?’ said Dani, trying to raise her eyebrow in movie star tradition but failing miserably. “Yes. I owe you an apology.” “You don’t owe me anything.” “Yes I do. Don’t argue.” He smiled at her and her reserves melted. “I was still smarting from my

“You decided for me!” Now Dani was beginning to feel a new emotion towards Stephen -- anger. “What right did you have to make decisions for me? You could have talked to me.” She broke off as Lacey returned. Lacey obviously realized she had interrupted something and looked uncomfortable. “Excuse me,” said Dani, trying to mask her discomfort. “I have to make a phone call. Show your Dad around, Lacey. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

She darted into her office and closed the door behind her, trying to sort out her conflicting feelings.
She knew the attraction she felt towards Stephen was stronger than ever. But she was angry at him as well.
How dare he make arbitrary decisions that involved her. Didn't he realize an explanation would have been kinder than the sudden break-off? Then she began to wonder why he was bringing it up again now. Was he about to tell her he was ready to move on? Or was he just trying to explain, to put their relationship in the past? “Don’t be a coward,” she said to herself. “You have to find out what he wanted to say.” She slipped back towards the banquet area and stopped in the main entry. In front of her, backs turned in her direction, stood three figures, Lacey, Stephen and a woman. It must be Lacey’s mother, she decided. They must have reconciled and that’s what he wanted to tell me- to clear the air for the wedding preparations. She was about to vanish quietly when Stephen turned. “There you are. I want you to meet Karen, Lacey’s mother. We’ve decided to be civilized and work together to make Lacey’s
wedding perfect.” Then another figure approached from the side hallway. “This is Dennis, Karen’s husband.” Dani recovered enough to stammer a greeting and shake hands all around. Then Stephen pulled her away from the crowd. “Now back to our conversation. What I was trying to tell you was that I realized my feelings for you were genuine, not a backlash. I'm sorry I didn't talk it out with you. Is it too late for us to try again, or have I waited too long?” No, it wasn’t too late. Dani linked her arm in his and led him back to her office. She resolved to make Lacey's wedding the most perfect ever. Well, maybe the second most perfect, she qualified as she smiled back at Stephen.

A Good Job Done
The farmer's son was returning from the market with a crate of chickens his father had entrusted to him, when all of a sudden the box fell and broke open. Chickens scurried off in different directions, but the determined boy walked all over the neighborhood scooping up the wayward birds and returning them to the repaired crate. Hoping he had found them all, the boy reluctantly returned home, expecting the worst. "Pa, the chickens got loose," the boy confessed sadly, "but I managed to find all twelve of them." "Well, you did a good job, son," the farmer beamed, "because you only left with seven."

Distracted Driving
This morning on the highway, I looked over to my left and there was a woman in a brand new Cadillac, driving 80 km/hr with her face up next to her rear view mirror putting on her make up! I had to look away for a couple seconds, to finish my shaving and when I looked back, she was halfway over in my lane, still working on her makeup! I don't scare easily, but she scared me so much, I had to put on my seat belt, but then I dropped my electric shaver, which knocked the donut out of my other hand. In all the confusion of trying to straighten out the car using my knees

had an interesting encounter with a Ma Moose and her twins last winter. The trio first showed up in our yard the previous spring, when the (sooo cute) young were wobbly on their feet and covered with reddish baby fur.
Given that mother moose are so fiercely protective of their young, we always gave them a wide berth,
even when they plopped themselves down at the salt block in the horse pasture or munched on the laurel leaf willows beside the back deck. On this particular cold, clear late afternoon, they were feeding quietly in the aspens behind our workshop. Taking advantage of the location (I could run into the shop if necessary), I walked quietly towards one of the calves. When I finally got too close, it pranced off in a huff towards Ma. I continued on around the shop, tip-

Murder on the Menu By Guy Belleranti
ORRY, CLOSED MONDAYS read the sign on the door, but my partner Bart and I weren’t at the restaurant for breakfast. Murder was on the menu this morning, and Liz Castle, co-owner of the Cozy Café, was the victim. “I can’t believe this is happening,” Anne Fleming, the café’s other co-owner, said tearfully. “We were supposed to have a business meeting, but now....” She averted her eyes from the figure sprawled on the restaurant’s kitchen floor. “Do you recognize the knife she was stabbed with?” Bart asked. “I’d rather not look, but yes, there is a knife missing from the rack. And that one...in Liz...it does have the same handle as the others.” A uniformed cop stuck his head in the room. “There’s a man out front. Says he’s the business manager.” “Oh,” Anne Fleming cried. “That’s Harvey. Harvey Stark. Thank goodness he’s here.” We followed the cop into the dining area. “Harvey! Poor Liz! She’s dead.” “I heard,” the tall man responded. He dabbed his rain slicked hair with a handkerchief. “The policeman told me it was murder. If only I’d gotten here earlier. But the traffic’s a mess with all this rain.” “You were expected at this morning’s meeting, then,” I asked. “Yes,” said Stark. He turned

Dress Code
Employed by the human-development center of a corporation in the midwest, my friend trains employees in proper dress codes and etiquette. One day as she was stepping onto the elevator, a man casually dressed in jeans and a golf shirt got on with her. Thinking of her responsibilities, she scolded, "Dressed a little casually today, aren't we?" The man replied, "That's one benefit of owning the company...."

rant manager said as he jotted down the address. “Maybe you can get his prints and match them to some on the knife.” He frowned. “Of course that might not prove much since he probably used it every day while working here.” I took the address and then Bart and I headed out on the wet streets. Parker lived in a dreary apartment complex two miles away. When we reached his door Bart knocked. A minute passed, then a second. “What now, Lenny,” he asked me. “Knock again,” I said. Bart raised his hand and the door jerked open. The thickset, middle-aged man stared as Bart and I flashed our ID’s. “Are you Martin Parker?” I asked. “Yeah.” “Mind if we come in and ask you some questions?” “What about?” I watched him closely. “Liz Castle’s been stabbed to death.” Parker barely blinked, but I saw his jaw clench. He made no move to invite us inside. “She fired you yesterday, right?” I asked. The man shrugged. “Yeah, but I’ve already got a line on a better job. Going in for an interview later this morning. ” “Speaking of this morning,”

Bart said, “where were you between 7:00 and 8:00?” “Right here. Having my coffee and reading the paper.” “Can anyone vouch for that?” I asked. “Nope. I live alone.” “The knife used might have your prints all over it.” “And it might not too.” “We can drag you downtown....” “Yeah,” Parker snarled, “I guess you can. But you might also want to drag in Liz’s partner, Anne Fleming, and the manager, Harvey Stark. Fleming and Castle butted heads a lot. Fleming was pushing to change the café’, to make it trendier. Castle wanted to keep it a mom-and-pop place. As for Stark - he wanted to change things, too. He and Castle never got along.”

“I think we should’ve hauled him in, Lenny,” Bart grumbled as we got into the car. “And Fleming and Stark – we should haul them in as well.” “Plenty of time for all of that, Bart,” I said. “Right now there’s something bothering me. Something about that murder knife.” “The knife? Hmm. Well, any of the three knew where it was, and any of the three could have used it. That I do know.” “Very true,” I said, “but that’s not what I mean. Someone said something about that knife. Something that—” I snapped my fingers as it came to me. “Yeah! I’ve got it, Bart. I know who did it. I know who the killer is.” Bart stared. “Who?” “Harvey Stark. He said we might find Parker’s prints on the knife. Then he said that if we did find Parker’s prints on it that might not mean much since Parker used the knife every day at work.
But how did Stark know the murder weapon was a knife?
And even more importantly how did he know it was one of the knives from the kitchen. We didn’t tell him. Anne Fleming didn’t tell him. None of us ever mentioned a knife at all. And Stark

never came in the kitchen and never saw the body. We met him in the dining area.” “Say, that’s right,” Bart said, excitedly. “The only way Stark could know the specifics of the murder weapon was if he he’d been the one to use it! Great thinking, Lenny.” We acquired a search warrant, and when we found Liz Castle’s blood on his coat, Stark confessed. He’d arrived at the restaurant early and found Liz in the kitchen. They’d argued about how Stark was trying to change the café. When Liz threatened to pull her money out of the business, Stark grabbed the knife from the counter and stabbed her. Then he left and returned later as if he was just arriving for the scheduled meeting. * * *

Vat A Country!
Many years ago, my father was visiting Canada, from Europe, for the very first time. He said he wanted to go with me to the supermarket, so I invited him along. As he went up and down the aisles with me at the local supermarket he constantly asked questions about products he saw. "Vas diss?? Powdered orange juice?" asked my dad. I said, "Yeh, Dad. You just add a little water, and you have fresh orange juice." A few minutes later, in a different aisle, dad blurted out, "Und vas dis?? Powdered milk?" I said, "Yeah, Dad. You just add a little water, and you have fresh milk!" A few minutes later, in a different aisle, my dad yelled out, "Und give a look here!! Baby Powder! Vat a country, vat a country!"

A friend was thinking about buying a new house in the country and asked me to come out and look at it. We found the town, but we couldn't locate the road. We drove over to city hall, where a community get-together was going on, and asked around, but no one had heard of the road. Even the policemen and fire personnel were stumped. We went in to city hall and consulted a map, with no luck, until finally one young man came to our aid. He pointed to the map, showing us exactly how to get there. I thanked the young man and asked if he was with the police or fire department. "Neither," he replied. "I deliver pizzas."

ural Canada is dotted with stone cairns, marking the spot where old schoolhouses used to stand, and are inscribed accordingly. These one-roomed schools were so much a part of our prairie life until consolidation sent our farm kids bussing into town. Now, they have disappeared from the landscape. The few old schoolhouses that still remain have been transformed into granaries or sheds or even homes, and have been carted away from their original sites.
My Aunt Ethel attended one-room country schools for the better part of her life- first as a pupil, then as a teacher.
After decades of boarding with local families, or living in teacherages, she finally retired to her home area and bought a little house. Aunt Ethel was one of the few alumni still living when the cairn was dedicated to Sunny Slope School. She was also the oldest, now in her early nineties. As such, she was asked to attend the ceremony and had her picture
taken standing beside the cairn. This picture appeared in the local weekly paper, along with one of the original school and a description of the event. In the story my aunt was mistakenly identified as Miss Edith Sherson, instead of Miss Ethel Sherson. Now, my aunt was not one to make a fuss. She was a retired teacher, never married and quite content to live out her days quietly in her small house on a corner lot with her garden and flowers. So, although a little annoyed, she would never have contacted the paper to point out the mistake. My Aunt Shirley, her sisterin-law, on the other hand, felt no such compunctions. She phoned

the editor of the weekly paper to let them know the name should be Ethel, not Edith. The paper did the honourable thing and printed a correction the next week, "We are sorry for the printing error. The identification should have read Miss Elsie Shearson, not Miss Edith Shearson." Well, they still didn't have it right. Aunt Shirley contacted the paper again. Once more, the paper printed the apology and correction. "The third time is the charm. The name of the oldest student has been reported erroneously in the past two issues. Our apologies to Mrs. Ethel Sherson, not Elsie or Edith." Well, now the names, first and continued on pg. 45

The Farm & Ranch Store

cow decided she liked the neighbor’s lawn more than she liked the hay I was feeding her, so she wiggled her way through the fence, causing a slight injury to her udder extremities. Thus I found myself in need of some salve for her scrapes and scratches. I looked at the ad for the local Farm and Ranch store, and, as luck would have it, my favorite ointment was on sale. I asked my wife if she would go buy some. She told me she would prefer not to. She has always seemed reluctant to shop there, and I have never understood why. It is one of my favorite stores. It is teeming with interesting items: saddles, bridles, animal feeds, and every other imaginable thing, and some a person wouldn’t imagine. When I arrived at the store and checked where the salve should have been, I found the ad size was sold out. I made my way to the front of the store and approached one of the checkout girls. “I came to buy some salve that you had in your ad, but you appear to be out, and I was wondering if you could check and see if you have any more in the back.” The girl nodded. “Sure. I’ll just call over the intercom for someone to help you. What is it called?” “Bag Balm.” The girl sat there, frozen in place, holding the intercom microphone in her hand. I figured she must need more information. “I did see that you had the small size, as well as Udderly
sMOOth, and Udder Butter. But I wanted the super size container of Bag Balm.” Finally, the girl put the microphone down and glared at me.
“You’re kidding me about those names, aren’t you? You just wanted to see if I would make a fool of myself repeatig them.”
“Of course not. I really need the Bag Balm.” “Right!” she said sarcastically. “Let me call someone to help you.” She picked up the radio and

The girl turned to me and spoke as if she was daring me to say it again. “Why don’t you tell John what you need.” I repeated my request, and John simply answered, “I’ll check in the shipment that came in today.” As he left, the young lady stared after him. I moved aside as she helped a few other customers, and soon John was back. “I couldn’t remember if you said you wanted the Bag Balm, the Udderly sMOOth, or the Udder Butter, so I brought one of

She reached for one and held it in two fingers like it was toxic. “You mean those are their actual names?” John frowned slightly. “You’re new here, aren’t you?” The girl nodded, and John just sighed as he spoke. “You’ll get used to it.” I had finally checked out and was turning to leave when an old cowboy approached the checkout stand and spoke to the same girl. “I came in here to get my usual anti-itch powder, and either you’re out or you moved it. I really hate it when you move things around in your store!” “I can have someone see if they can find it for you,” the young lady assured him, reaching for the intercom mic. “Just tell me what it’s called.”
“It’s called Monkey Butt Powder.”
As I turned back to look at the young lady, she was frozen in place, and I swear I heard a slight whimper. * * *

Meanwhile, Ma & Pa Hicks were sitting on the porch talking about the good old days. Suddenly Ma spotted the biggest bird she ever seen! "Look at the size of that bird, Pa!" she exclaimed. Pa rose up,"Git my gun, Ma." Ma ran into the house and brought out his pump action shotgun. He took careful aim and BANG...BANG.....BANG. The monster-sized bird continued to sail silently over the tree tops. "I think ya missed him, Pa." Ma said. "Yeah," he replied, "but at least he let go of Zeek!"

Because they had no reservations at a busy restaurant, my elderly neighbor and his wife were told there would be a 45 minute wait for a table. "Young man, we're both 95 years old," the husband said. "We may not have 45 minutes." They were seated immediately!

last, were both correct. The only problem was that the paper had conjured up a husband, past or present for my Aunt, something she would have had no truck with.
A Cormorant gathers nesting materials. By Myrna Pearman
She tolerated men, as long as they were someone else's husband, and didn't smoke in her living room, but taking one for herself had never been in her plan.
She had been an independent woman with a very strong mind of her own in the days when women were encouraged to echo their husbands, whether they agreed with them or not. It just wasn't her style. Still, she didn't believe in creating a scene and kept her opinions to herself. It was Aunt Shirley who again contacted the weekly. Finally, they got it right. The final version got both the names right, as well as marital status. They could have worded it a little better though. The correction read, "We've finally got the name right, and we are sorry that Miss Sherson never married.' Somehow, I don't think she would have looked at it that way.
