urtling from a plane at 11,000 feet put my other fears into perspec-

tive. We were only 2,000 feet up and that seemed more than high enough to me, though we would be skydiving from 11,000 feet. We were less than a quarter of the way there.

As the plane climbed higher and higher, I clenched my fists and tried to regulate my breathing and slow my pounding heartbeat.

At 11,000 feet, the Cessna’s door opened and, in a flash, first my younger sister, then my mother were gone. It was my turn. The man strapped to my back, who would be in charge of all the little details, like pulling the chute, asked if I was ready. With little conviction, I squeaked that I was. But then it seemed there was a technical difficulty, the difficulty being that I was clutching the back of the pilot’s seat for dear life and refusing to let go, making it technically impossible for me to exit the plane. “Do you still want to do this?” the man attached to me asked. “Yes,” I told him, trying to sound resolute. “Then let go of the seat,” he said with some exasperation. “No,” I replied. In truth, at that moment, the last thing I wanted to do was jump from a plane. I did, however, desperately want to get back

on solid ground and I tried to reason with myself that jumping might be the fastest way to go about getting there. The man again asked me to relinquish my death grip on the seat. Again, I refused. He called to the pilot to shut the door, as we would need to do anoth-

er loop. The Cessna’s door swung closed and relief washed over me. All I wanted was to forget this nonsense. If we could just land safely, I swore to myself I would never take the earth beneath my feet for granted again. But my 55-year old mother and my younger sister had both jumped and it seemed a little preposterous to have spent nearly $300 for a quick Cessna ride. And did I really want to miss out on this experience, to have to wonder what it would have been like, and to know that I had let my fear get the better of me? So, on my hands and knees, at a painstakingly slow pace that somehow still felt too fast, I approached the door. It opened and the wind whipped my face and caught my breath. I was instructed to place my right foot on a small platform that hung off the side of the plane. I tried, but found I could not move my foot of my own volition, so the man on my back picked up my leg and helped inch it out of

the plane. I felt a little push and before I knew it we were hurtling so fast that my cheeks were wobbling. I realized with horror that I was upside down, but we quickly righted ourselves. We freefell for what I was later told was about 30 seconds, but it might as well have been 30 minutes. Ken Banks Mercifully, I soon felt a little tug (780) 986-6556 as the parachute opened. Relief Cell: (780) 499-1122 washed over me. I could hear the man on my back again. “You did 50025 Rge. I asked him if anyone had ever chickened out before. “Not with me,” he said. I was glad that I hadn’t been the first. As we gently floated toward earth, I looked down in awe at the ambers and reds of the fall colours and at the sun glinting off the river below me.

I was a tiny speck in the sky gazing down at a big, beautiful world

– or one miniscule corner of it. We did a gentle spin and I whooped softly. My family were all waiting for me in the landing field as I came in for a surprisingly gentle landing, skidding softly on my rump. It was over. The earth I had so longed for a few short minutes before was beneath me and I laughed in gratitude and in amazement that I had somehow gone through with it all in spite of the overwhelming fear that had seized me up there. A few hours later, still marvelling at the experience, I got to thinking about other fears I’d been holding onto. So often, words and ideas had flowed through my brain and I had desperately wanted to pour them out on the page, but I would find myself overcome with anxiety. Who was I kidding? I was not a writer and committing something to paper would only provide concrete evidence of this. But after that day, I found something had changed. Next to throwing myself out of a plane at 11,000 feet, typing at my computer with my feet on solid ground really didn’t seem like such a big deal anymore. So I let go and began writing…

Summer Reading - Suspense

el Trainer sat easily in the driver’s seat, watching the wipers move in steady strokes. A slight smile played around the generous lips of his overlarge mouth. He looked like a man at peace with the world. And he was. His work took him far from home and he was happy to be returning, his latest project now complete. He pictured the welcome ahead from his wife Marlene and already felt a stir of passion as he anticipated her greeting. Life was indeed good, if you were Del Trainer. The silence in the car remained unbroken until he reached over and turned the dial on the radio. A newscast began. “Police are still searching for results in the roadside murders,” began the announcer in a deep sonorous voice. Del listened with interest to the broadcast...

"All travellers are warned under no circumstances to pick up hitchhikers on the highways.”

He sat up straighter as he saw an outline in the dark at the side

of the road. A man was walking on the shoulder, bag thrown across his back, waving him down. Del posed the problem for a moment. Dare he? Then he smiled. Why not? It might make a pleasant diversion for the rest of his trip. He slowed and pulled to the side of the road. By the time Del had stopped, the hitchhiker was opening the passenger door. “Thanks.” The hitchhiker threw his bag onto the floor of the front seat and grinned up at Del. Del smiled back. The hitchhiker was a young man, lean in frame but his shoulders looked muscular and as he took off his dripping jacket to throw it across the bag on the floor, Del could see tattoos creeping down his forearms. He almost questioned his decision. Then the youth smiled openly at him and Del's twinges of fear dissipated. He knew he was a good judge of character; in

The Truth Log

The first mate on a ship decided to celebrate with a bit of stowed-away rum. He got so drunk that he was still a little drunk the next morning. Later in the day, when the first mate had sobered up, he looked in the ship's log. He read the captain's entry for the day: "The first mate was drunk today." "Captain, please don't leave that in the log," the mate said. "This could add months or years to my becoming a captain myself." "Well, is it true?" asked the captain, knowing full well it was. "Yes, it's true," admitted the mate. "If it's true, it has to stay in the log. That's the rule. If it's true, it goes in the log. End of discussion!" said the captain sternly. Weeks later, it was the first mate's turn to make the log entry. The first mate wrote: "The ship seems to be in good shape. The captain was sober today." * * *

GREENHOUSE & FIREWOOD his line of work, it was a requirement. “Where are you heading?” he asked. “West. And you?” “Not much farther,” said Del. “But I’ll let you out somewhere you can find a ride.” Both men settled back, each feeling he had taken the measure of the other. Del considered turning the radio back on but wasn’t really interested in hearing a repeat of the news which would be coming up shortly. Instead he said "What’s your name, by the way?” The young man hesitated briefly, but Del picked up on the forthcoming lie. “Justin. Justin Deacon. And you?” Two can play that game, thought Del. “I’m Earl Carruthers,” he said with no hesitation whatsoever. Del knew he had made a risky move inviting company along on this trip, especially considering the newscasts that had been going out on a regular basis. He realized his passenger had been quiet for some time and glanced across at him. Justin’s chin had dropped to his chest and he showed signs of being asleep. So much for his use as a diversion, but . . .

Pigeon Lake & Area Visitor Guide 2013 • Page 18

Del knew better than to rely on appearances. The young man could be more dangerous than he looked.

Then Del’s gaze fell to the bag on the floor at Justin’s feet and his throat contracted. Peering out from under the jacket in a side pocket not quite closed, he caught a glint of steel. His driving gloves tightened on the steering wheel as he reconsidered his position. He would have to rethink his plans. Picking up this hiker in a fit of boredom was not the wisest move he had ever made. Curiosity made him turn on the radio to see if there were any new developments. Keeping one hand on the wheel, he reached over, removed the knife and slid his fingers into the pouch of the bag. He silently withdrew a windowed packet of ID. Eyes moving back and forth between the road ahead and his reading material, he realized his passenger was ex-military. That could make for a formidable opponent. A quick glance to the side locked onto the open eyes of his passenger. Del never before

Tight Shoes

A man walks into a shoe store, and tries on a pair of shoes. "How do they feel?" asks the sales clerk. "Well ... they feel a bit tight." replies the man. believed time could stand still, but it did. Their eyes met and realization struck them both as the news bulletin repeated in the background. Justin blinked first and reached for his bag as Del swerved the car to the road shoulder and grabbed the knife from beside the driver’s seat where he had moved it. “Looking for this?” The car pulled to a stop on the side of the deserted road. Del held the knife still, touching the side of Justin’s neck where a pulse beat rapidly. With his other hand he turned off the engine and reached into the console. He pulled out a gun. “Now we’re in better shape,” he said. He pointed the weapon at Justin and motioned him out of

“Look, I’m not who you think I am,” stammered Justin. “I’m not that roadside killer.”

“I know.” A smirk changed the expression on Del's face as he glanced around to be sure the road was still deserted. One shot to kill and a second to make certain. He shoved Justin’s body into the car and drove it into the ditch. Shrubbery hid the car but Del checked from all sides to be sure it wasn't visible. Soon his last victim would be found, but he’d just as soon Justin remained hidden for a while.

Usually he didn’t like to leave the car so far from a town. This meant he’d have to walk quite a distance and might not reach the next town till nearly morning. Del thought again of the delightful charms of Marlene waiting for him and grabbed his briefcase from the car. He took a quick look around and left. Maybe the police will think there were two men and they had a falling out, he thought. Maybe it’s time to change to another venue. He just didn’t want to stay away from home for long at a time. Del was a family man, after all.

New Recruit

As the family gathered for a big dinner together, the youngest son announced that he had just signed up at an army recruiter's office. There were audible gasps around the table, then some laughter, as his older brothers shared their disbelief that he could handle this new situation. "Oh, come on, quit joking," snickered one. "You didn't really do that, did you?" "You would never get through basic training," scoffed another. The new recruit looked to his mother for help, but she was just gazing at him. When she finally spoke, she simply asked, "Do you really plan to make your own bed every morning?"

What Goes Around Summer Reading - Inspiration

I

By Daris Howard

was tired and dirty from hauling hay all day, and I really didn’t want something more to do. But driving home in the dimming evening light, I saw a car pulled off to the side of the road. It was in a section where there were lots of farms, but very few homes, and a limited amount of traffic, so, as tired as I was, I stopped to see if someone needed help. As I pulled up behind the car, I could see the passenger side rear tire was completely flat. In fact, the burnt rubber on the road indicated that it was probably a blow out. The tire rim was sunk deep into the soft sand along the pavement. In the car I saw a older lady dressed in a very nice dress. She appeared stressed, and my appearance didn’t reassure her. Besides being covered with dust and hay leaves, I was unshaven, and I’m sure my aroma was less than pleasing. I could just imagine her thoughts as she nervously rolled her window down a small amount as I spoke. “Lady, do you need some help?” She shook her head. “No, I’m sure I can get my husband to come.” I assured her I could change her tire, but she ignored me and dialed on her cell phone. I waited to make sure she was okay, and it was a good thing I did, for she never did get an answer. Finally,

she reluctantly allowed me to help. She popped the trunk of her car so I could get the spare, even though she was leery of getting out of the car. The soft sand made changing the tire difficult. I was able to dig a hole and get her jack under the car, but it only lifted it a small amount. I then retrieved my own jack and was able to get it only a little higher. I put a 2X4 from my pickup on top of the sand. Once I had a jack on the 2X4 so it wouldn’t sink, I was able to lift the car high enough to change the tire.

Through the process, the lady eventually gained confidence that I was safe, and came out to watch me.

As I worked, she told me she was in a hurry to get to a meeting and appreciated my help. Finally, drenched in sweat, with the sun’s rays fading on the horizon, I finished. Though I was tired, I felt good about the job I had done. She expressed her gratitude, and asked how much she owed me. I just smiled. “I’m glad to help. Just pass the favor on.” About a year later, I was in a government office trying to get a permit for work I needed to do on my house. I had tried three times, and every time I thought I had met their rules, I had to jump though another hoop. I was continued on pg. 27

feeling extremely frustrated as the young lady behind the counter spoke. “I don’t know who you talked to the last time, but this is not complete. We need more verification that you will do the work appropriately, or my supervisor will never sign off on it.” Just then, the young woman’s supervisor stepped out of her office.

She looked at me, then took the form from the young woman. “I’m sure he will do what he says.”

She marked the application ‘approved’ and signed it, handing

it back before returning to her office. The young woman was shocked. “Wow! She’s never done that before. Do you know her?” I told her that as far as I knew, I had never seen her in my life. “Well, I have never seen her express her trust in anyone like that!” she said. She handed me the approved permit, and as I turned to leave, the supervisor stepped from her office and smiled at me as she spoke. “And thanks again for changing my tire.” And that was when I recognized her, and realized the kindness had not only been passed on, but the trust had been returned.

Can You See Me?

I'm a counselor who helps coordinate support groups for visuallyimpaired adults. Many participants have a condition known as macular degeneration, which makes it difficult for them to distinguish facial features. I had just been assigned to a new group and was introducing myself. Knowing that many in the group would not be able to see me well, I jokingly said, "For those of you who can't see me, I've been told that I look like a cross between Paul Newman and Robert Redford." Immediately, one woman called out, "We're not THAT blind!"

A Matter of Time Summer Reading - Romance

T

By Sharon McGregor

en minutes past three. Justin was late again. Sarah flicked her wrist over for the third time-check in as many minutes. Then she slumped over in the corner of the booth, scowling at her cooling cup of tea. How many times had this scene repeated itself -- Sarah sitting staring at the scum accumulating on a mug, impatiently gnawing at the inside of her cheek. One more glance at her watch; even for Justin forty-five minutes was too much. She snatched her denim jacket from the booth and headed for the till. She stopped for a minute in the doorway, adjusting her focus to the glaring afternoon sun before sliding onto the hot vinyl seat of her old Civic. She sighed as she wiggled in her seat, trying to find comfort on the sticky hot cover, and wondered again which one of her major character flaws kept her pursuing the same old behaviour patterns. Twice she’d ended it with Justin and twice, to the consternation of her sister Pam, she’d taken him back. “Come stay with me for the holidays,” Pam urged her. “We’ll have some sister fun and take your mind off Justin.” Sarah’s anger worked its way down through her right foot until she glanced in amazement at the speedometer, just as she saw the flashing light behind her. The police officer leaned over and demanded her licence and registration. “Do you know you were going ten miles over the speed limit?” She grinned ruefully and turned her smile up to the chiselled profile that loomed. “I don’t suppose an apology and a promise never to do it again would help?” Good grief! She thought to herself as she gazed into a pair of deeply concerned brown eyes. I’m actual-

ly trying to talk myself out of a ticket. Chalk up one more character flaw for Sarah. The look he returned was uncompromising. “Sorry,” he said, “I have to give you a ticket.” He checked out her licence and the frown lifted. “Sarah Dillon? Aren’t you Pam’s sister?” Her mouth dropped open for a moment before she recovered. “I forgot how everyone knows everybody in Glendale. I don’t remember seeing you before.” How could she possibly have missed someone with those soulful eyes and that smile? “Sam Jeffreys. I just moved here a few months ago.” His dimpled smile changed back to his original frown. “You really must learn how to slow down. There are a few bad curves on this road. “I am sorry,” she said sincerely. “I’m afraid my mind was on something else.” He left with a friendly wave. “See you Saturday at the barbeque.” Oh no! Pam’s barbeque. He was one of Pam’s Prospects. Her sister periodically dragged over the

doorstep men she deemed suitable for Sarah. Her presentation was usually accompanied by a smirk similar to the one Tigger her cat wore when he deposited an unwelcome rodent on the mat. It was also usually preceded by a lengthy discussion with the Prospect along the lines of, “Poor Sarah, such bad luck with men.” She shuddered at the realization that Pam had probably invited Sam for just that reason. Heaven knows what she had told him.

to break to give it a miss? Any hopes to evade Saturday’s party were lost in the firm grip of her older sister. As the guests trickled into the back yard, Sarah tried to keep to the fringes. Then she saw Sam, heading her way. “I really should be working tonight,” he said. “They called me in to change shifts, but I wasn’t going to miss this barbeque.” “It is difficult to wiggle out of one of Pam’s invitations,” she murmured. Under her breath she said “Just ask me.” “Oh, it was Mike who invited me. We golf together. He said his sister-in-law would be down but didn’t say another word about you except that you were a horse lover.

This was Pam’s latest Prospect? It wasn’t her policeman? Her glance at Sam was a delighted one at this discovery. “If you’re going to be staying another week,” he was saying “Maybe we could go riding.” Now Sarah caught sight of another unwelcome guest. Justin stood in the back doorway. She put her hand lightly on Sam’s arm and smiled up at him. “Could you excuse me a couple of minutes? I have some old business to tidy up. I’ll be right back.” She inched past

I hate to say this, but if you hadn’t been speeding, I might never have come.”

As Sarah digested this information she saw Pam making a beeline for her grasping a tall, weedy man wearing a denim shirt and a shy smile.

Ma Mallard The Story of

L

By Myrna Pearman ast year, a female mallard duck ( Ma Mallard) took up residence behind an old flower box next to the Ellis Bird Farm Visitor Centre. Her choice of locations was fortuitous, as we were able to install a webcam above the nest and share her with the world via ustream. It was a ustream viewer who alerted us when the young started hatching on the afternoon of Saturday, May 26. We checked the webcam repeatedly that evening and all day Sunday, expecting to witness her departure. But she sat tight and remained quiet. A stern and confident mother, she tried her best to keep her little black and yellow babies tucked safely beneath her wings. But by Sunday evening, the ducklings were becoming restless and more daring; they would pop out from beneath her protective cover and adventurously dart around the nest area. Early Monday morning, I got a phone call from a dedicated viewer with the news that Ma Mallard had twice left the nest, but each time retreated because contractors on the site were inadvertently blocking her route. Our site is closed on Mondays, but I didn’t want to miss any excitement, so I grabbed

my camera and convinced a friend to drive the 50 km over to the farm. My plan was to monitor the ustream channel on my smartphone. Just as we pulled up to the Visitor Centre, the screen showed Ma making a final beeline from the nest.

But by the time we ran around to the nest site, the ducks were nowhere to be seen. It was as if they had all vanished into thin air!

We then did a thorough search around the Visitor Centre and finally found her hunkered down under some low spruce branches to the west of the building. We quietly and gently herded her back out into the yard and

then watched in awe as she proudly waddled—her family of 12 little panting, peeping fluff balls in tow—to the pond. It was a journey that took her through a patch of trees and tall grass, across the lawn and mulched beds, over the big boulders by the Wetland Centre, and finally out onto the pier. Ma slipped under one side of the pier while her ducklings all stampeded to the farthest corner. Each took their turn launching off the pier into the water. Once the last one had splashed down and motored its way out to its clucking Ma, we bid them adieu with a round of cheers. Within a minute or so, they had disappeared into the safety of the tall grass on the far side of the pond. We all returned to our tasks at hand, hearts buoyed from the honour of bearing witness to one of nature’s most remarkable moments. he 24th of May once meant only one thing to me. Firecracker Day was the official day when I was allowed to take off my undershirt and knee-length woollen underwear-and don white bobby socks. In those days, girls wore long, ugly brown stockings over their underwear. Even though I pleaded and coaxed and cajoled my mother to allow me to remove the cumbersome short johns she was adamant. If the temperature soared in April or early May, it was absolutely forbidden.

"You'll catch pneumonia if you take off your underwear before the 24th of May," she warned.

But as soon as I left the house on a warm spring day, I would creep down the back steps, and hide behind the porch. Then, I rolled my brown stockings down rakishly below the knee, and the underwear up to my thighs. And modern girls think that they invented mini skirts!

Each night, the same procedure was repeated in reverse. I entered the house with my brown stockings demurely covering my legs from stem to stern. "See!" my mother would exclaim. "Aren't you glad you didn't catch pneumonia?" My most embarrassing moment occurred one day at school. The teacher summoned me to the front of the class to write an answer on the blackboard. While the chalk squeaked against the slate, I heard the students tittering, then laughing, unable to control themselves. "You may sit down now, my dear," the teacher said, her face flushed. I felt something dragging around my knees and looked down. To my horror, the right leg continued on pg. 39

Banking Woes

The girl came running in tears to her father. "Dad, you gave me some terrible financial advice!" she cried. "I did? What did I tell you?" said the dad. "You told me to put my money in that big bank, and now that big bank is in trouble." "What are you talking about? That's one of the largest banks in the world," he said. "Surely there must be some mistake." "I don't think so," she sniffed. "They just returned one of my checks with a note saying, 'Insufficient Funds'." * * * "I used to be a people person but people ruined that for me."

of my underwear had unfurled and hung at half mast beneath the hem of my skirt, exposed to the entire Grade 8 class. Mortified, I clutched at the loathsome legging, and crept back to my desk. The kids of today don't have to wear long underwear let alone wait until the 24th of May to dump it. Girls and boys don't wear undershirts either, even if the temperature dips below zero. Known around our house as Captain Torso, my son only wears a white undershirt with a dress jacket just to look cool. Undershirts, per se, are taboo unless worn alone as a sole piece of attire. Simon Cowell, for example, wouldn't be caught on camera in anything other than a black tee shirt. Rummaging through a trunk one day, Captain Torso came across his grandfather's long sleeved red undershirt with the three button neck. "Can I have it, Dad?" he asked my husband, on his way out the door. "Not one guy at school has an old one like this." "Your grandfather wore it because he was poor," his father said. "What will the teacher say when he sees you wearing an old red undershirt to school?"

"My gym teacher's already seen it, Dad," my son announced. "He wants to know where he can get one just like it." The Victoria Day holiday brings back all sorts of nostalgic memories. The really big carnivals like the Conklin Shows came to town each year.

It was also the day that the local yo-yo champ appeared miraculously at the corner store to stun you with his wizardry,

sending you racing home for a nickel or a dime to buy one of your own. Wax teeth filled with fruit juice, jacks, marbles and skipping ropes usually appeared around the same time along with firecrackers. The only thing you could afford to continued on pg. 41

Dad's Pay Check

Three boys are in the schoolyard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, "My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, they give him $50." The second boy says, "That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a song, they give him $100." The third boy says, "I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon. And it takes eight people to collect all the money!" * * *

buy was a stick of punk and five cents worth of sparklers. Adults didn't have the same worries as those of today's parentsaccidents that caused officials to ban the sale of fireworks to juveniles. No one had any money to buy them anyway. Instead, we were taken by bus or streetcar to someone else's house where eight-to-ten families gathered on the front porch to watch the rich people next door set off their fireworks.

Peaceful Waters By Lorraine Lew

Just for fun, I asked my brood what Victoria Day meant to them.

"A holiday," said one. "Victoria who?" asked another. "Can I spend the weekend in the country at my boyfriend's house, Mom?" asked my daughter. "Is it all right if I go fishing with the guys?" was my husband's response. "The smelts are running." "There's a rock concert and Bangorama at the civic stadium," said my son. "I don't care about the fireworks, I just want to listen to the music." I couldn't help wondering which would be the loudest. The concert or the fireworks? If I were a betting woman, Bangorama would get my vote.
