“The boys and I have gotten it shortened to just ‘Dang It’. I’ve kind of tried to get him used to his normal name again, but I’ve about given up. I figure that a person shouldn’t try to teach an old dog new tricks. Just call him what he knows.” I whistled and patted my leg. “Here, Dang It.” Immediately the dog was by my side. I patted his beautiful golden head as Burke continued.
Dang It By Daris Howard

ave you ever wondered how a farm dog gets its name? Well, let me explain it to you. The other day I went to see a neighbor, Burke, who is a farmer. As we sat visiting in his yard, I looked over to see a beautiful golden retriever that I hadn’t ever seen there before. “New dog?” I asked. “Not too new,” he replied. “I’ve had him for about a year.” “You training him for hunting or anything useful?” I asked. “Heck, no. Not unless you count riding around in the back of the pickup useful. He’s good at that. That and gettin’ underfoot all of the time.” “What’s his name?” I asked. “Rufus,” came Burke’s reply. “My wife named him.” I whistled and patted my leg. “Here, Rufus.” The dog only yawned and ignored me. “I’m afraid he doesn’t recognize that name,” Burke said. I was surprised that after a full year he wouldn’t know his name, and I had to know more. “Why not?” I asked. Burke reached up and scratched his head. “Well, what name he knows is kind of a long story. You see, we have a throw rug we put just outside our door so we can wipe our muddy feet on it before we come into the house. When Rufus was a pup, he would chew that rug to pieces, either that or drag it off somewhere and bury it or something. Every time I stepped out the door and saw it chewed or gone, I would yell, ‘Dang it, you stupid dog!’ and he got to thinking that was his name.
“The problem is that we haven’t had the courage to tell my wife that we changed his name. She still thinks it’s Rufus. She has tried to make friends with him. She will come out and call him, but he won’t come. Then

she will turn and say, ‘Honey, will you call the dog.’ I will yell, ‘Dang it, Rufus, get over here,’ and he immediately comes. So she still thinks his name is Rufus, not realizing the first part of that is really his name.”
Buck Lake
As our conversation was ending, Burke said he needed to head out to work on a pivot. He slapped the side of his pickup.
“Dang It, let’s go boy.” The golden retriever leaped into the back, and ran up to the front and stuck his head over the side. His tail was wagging as he anticipated a fun ride. I, too, headed on my way, but I had one more stop before I headed home. I pulled into another farm yard, and the farmer came over to greet me. As we talked, I looked over and saw a young black lab chewing on a shoe. “You got a new dog?” I asked. “Yeah,” the farmer said. “Had ‘im for a few months now.” “You going to make a hunting dog out of him?” The farmer nodded. “Hoping to. In fact, his name is Pointer just for that reason.” I whistled and patted my leg. “Here, Pointer. Here, boy.” The dog ignored me and continued to chew on the shoe. The farmer grew disgusted. “Birdbrain, get your tail over here.” The dog immediately jumped up and trotted to us. And with that, I knew his dog would soon be named “Birdbrain”, for that is how farm dogs get their names. * * *
Border Declaration
Finishing up our work at a trade show in Calgary, my coworker Maureen and I decided to go sightseeing across the border in Montana. While there, we went shopping and bought a few pieces of clay kitchenware.
Warning: Lake levels may be lower than shown since depths were taken in the past.
As we crossed back into Canada, a customs official asked if we had anything of value to report. "Not really," Maureen replied, digging in her bag for the bean crock she had purchased. Everyone around us froze as she continued, "I only bought a little pot."

he fish almost pulled Morris into the water. He had taken his eyes off the float to watch two dragonflies mating among the rushes in a rattle of black-veined wings. Now he was kneeling on the grass, desperately gripping the rod and trying to adjust the drag on the reel before the line broke.
There was a big grin on his face. That dream of catching a really big fish was coming true. Other anglers were spread out around the lake, including his father and elder brother. He could see his brother pointing to him and just caught distant laughter. They probably thought he'd hooked the bottom again. A hard tug and he was dragged nearer the bank. Morris finally managed to loosen the drag and

watched the fish take yards of line in a big run. He lifted the rod tip and started to reel some back in, but it was taken out again as swiftly. The carp was enormous, a grey-scaled bulk the size of a small car. It was hundreds of years since the monks had first introduced him to their monastery fish farm, just a flash of silver amongst a cloud of other small fry. He'd escaped capture ever since, and now spent his time cruising the deep waters, moving closer to the bank when the warmer weather and the tourists arrived. Younger fish went for the easy food the anglers brought, risking the hook and an ignoble return to the water after weighing and trophy photographs. The ancient survivor would have none of that, following a more natural diet of snails, young ducklings and, when he could get them, young children. The carp jerked on the line again, watching the boy above stumble forward, enjoying the sport and waiting for the perfect moment to land his catch . . . (END)

eep your ears tuned. No, not to gossip, but to the amazing people all around you. For instance, have you heard about: …the waiter who was arrested for serving hot food? …the palm reader who always asked for a hand out? …the electrician who wanted to keep up on current events? …the surgeon who interned as a telephone operator? …the piano tuner who changed careers and became a locksmith because he knew his keys? …the star pitcher who gave his fiancé a baseball diamond? … the fair-minded eavesdropper who listened to both sides?

…the pickpocket who had the gift of grab?
…the mountain climber who was in peak condition? …the child who took up the violin and was sued for malpractice? …the archaeologist whose house burned down? He had to find new digs. …the seven foot basketball center who had to wear three and one half pairs of shoes? …the bald man who went to a haunted house — he'd heard it would be a hair-raising experience?

As
we paddled our rubber dinghy on Battle Lake, I was enthralled by the profusion of lily pads with their upright yellow flowers. Battle Lake and its Weteaskiwin County-run campground is a favourite for us. Its small size gives it a cozy, friendly feeling. It does not boast site water or electricity; however the bathroom facilities have toilets and a shower. When out 'roughing it', that is all you really need to accompany the stunning beauty of the place. The haunting call of the Loon commonly drifts across the still lake, along with the intermittent 'plop' of fish jumping out of the water. We prefer to camp weekdays, especially avoiding the long weekends. We often stroll
through the quiet campground greeting other campers, some strangers, others familiar. Sometimes we stop to chat. This is one of the ways we enjoy the peace and quiet while other campers go fishing.
We enjoy hiking through the bush on a boardwalk laid down years ago. Sign posts educate about nature along the way. On one of our hikes, a violent crashing sound told us we had disturbed a deer, while smaller animals were heard to be scurrying through the undergrowth. Fishermen's voices, as well as melodious bird calls, can be heard from far out on the water. It is also common to hear the muted whoops and shouts from the 4H camp across the lake.

What is noticeably not heard, is the roar of motorboats. Instead, motors softly purr, since the low speed limit on the lake keeps the waters from being churned up and muddied. Speed limits also allow for peaceful fishing and canoeing around the lake. In spring, the loud croaking of the frogs is music to sleep by. Occasionally you can hear a tree fall (yes, if a tree falls in the forest, someone will hear it!). We never did see a beaver in all our camping trips to Battle Lake, though there was plenty of evidence of their downed trees and 'slides' along the bank. If you haven't yet experienced Battle Lake, take time to visit this summer!

Shades of Tanning
Before going on vacation, I went to a tanning salon. I was under the lights so long that the protective shades I wore left a big white circle around each eye. Gazing at myself in the mirror the next day, I thought, "Man, I look like a clown." I had almost convinced myself that I was over-reacting until I got in line at the grocery store. I felt a tug at my shirt and looked down to see a toddler staring up at me. He asked, "Are you giving out balloons?"

Flat Tires and Headlights
A
Worker Ants
trucker came into a truck stop cafe and placed his order. He asked for three flat tires, a pair of headlights and a pair of running boards. The new waitress, not wanting to appear stupid, went to the kitchen and said to the cook, “This guy out there just ordered three flat tires, a pair of headlights and a pair of running boards? What does he think this place is, an auto parts store?” The cook explained. “Three flat tires mean three pancakes; a pair of headlights is two eggs sunny side up; and a pair of running boards are two slices of crisp bacon!” “Oh. . .ok!” said the blonde. She thought about it for a moment and then spooned up a bowl of beans and gave it to the customer. The trucker asked, “What are the beans for?” She replied, “I thought while you were waiting for the flat tires, headlights and running boards, you might as well gas up!” - submitted by Helen Atkinson
The teacher was giving her class of seven-yearolds a natural history lesson. "Worker ants," she told them, "can carry pieces of food five times their own weight. What do you conclude from that?" One child was ready with the answer: "They don't have a union." * * *
Never short change a skunk, because it’s bound to raise a stink.
Career Day
"What's your father's occupation?" asked the teacher on the first day of the new academic year. "He's a magician, Ma'am," said little Johnny. "How interesting. What's his favorite trick?" "He saws people in half." "Wow! Now, next question. Any brothers or sisters?" "One half brother and two half sisters."

Pet Bills
While waiting at the veterinarian's office, I overheard two women chatting about their dogs. "What's your dog's name?" asked the first woman. "Well, we used to call her Pork Chop," answered the second lady. "But after the vet bills we've had for her, we now call her Filet Mignon."

Look WAY Up By Leslie Carmichael

ook up — look waaay up. Away from the light pollution of the cities, we can see just how magnificent the night sky is. Stars, planets, constellations, galaxies and the Milky Way decorate the darkness with a billion points of light. To begin your astronomical journey, you will have to wait until quite late in the evening. Since Canada is so far above the equator, the Earth's axial tilt means that we have long twilights and short nights in the summer. Around the summer solstice (June 21), it may not even get dark enough to see stars, but later in the summer it will be easier.
Millions of stars are visible to the naked eye, but for those who wish a closer look, binoculars are a good investment. If you wish to buy a telescope, buy it based on aperture (diameter of the lens or mirror) rather than on power. Another necessity is a solid mount, so that your view is not wobbly. Good telescopes, along with advice, can be found at sci-
ence centres, science stores and via the internet. The view through any telescope will not match those pretty pictures that you see in magazines. Expect what you see to be small, fuzzy and white. But it will

still be a "wow" moment! If you want to look at a star chart while you are stargazing, use a red-filtered flashlight so you don't ruin your night vision. To make one, secure a piece of red cellophane around the bright end of a small ordinary flashlight. What will you see up there? First of all, you will see stars. Lots of them! Our solar system is located on the outside tail of our own spiral galaxy, which we call the Milky Way. It appears as a glowing band of hazy stars that arcs across the sky from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius. Constellations are stars that appear to have formed a pattern of sorts. Stars vary in size and brightness (magnitude), and larger stars that are billions of kilometers away appear to be grouped with closer, smaller stars. Our ancestors gave these constellations names and created stories about them to explain their presence in our night sky. These shapes may not be immediately obvious to our modern eyes, but if you use your imagination, you may be able to see what they saw. As an example, at midnight on July 15, you will see Ursa Major and Ursa Minor (the Big and Little Dippers) and the "W" of Cassiopeia near the Northern Horizon. As well, the hero Hercules will be close to the middle of the sky, as will Cygnus (the swan). Lyra will be directly above. The Zodiacal constella-
Stars twinkle, because of the thickness of our planet's atmosphere and their distance from us makes them shift slightly in our eyesight. Planets are much closer, so they don't twinkle. There are eight planets in our solar system (nine, if you count Pluto, which was demoted to dwarf planet status in 2006). This year, we are lucky to have Venus, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn making an appearance. With a telescope,

This is called the ecliptic plane, on which all the planets orbit the sun. At certain times of the year, we can also see meteor showers (falling or shooting stars). These are usually pieces of rock from asteroids. Once a meteor lands on

Earth, its name changes to meteorite. Most are very small and burn up during their passage through our atmosphere, due to friction. During the summer, Aquarids and Perseids (so called because they seem to come from the constellations of Aquarius and Perseus) will streak across the sky, from late night until dawn.
There are hundreds of man-made satellites orbiting our planet, which appear as moving points of light. You may even be lucky enough to see the International Space Station zooming across the sky. Our sun is also a star, but one should never look at it directly! If you wish to study our star, cut a pinhole in a piece of cardboard and look at the image it produces on the ground. You may wish to obtain a sun telescope called a Sunspotter for a better view of sunspots and other solar events. Happy stargazing! It was well past sunset and Jessie Jean should be home by now. I didn't like her staying out late at night, but no matter how many times I tried to enforce a curfew, I knew she would arrive when it suited her. "There you are," I said as I heard a familiar ping, ping, ping. It was Jessie's custom to announce her arrival with this tune as her claws plucked the mesh of the screen. This was my cue to open the door for her grand entrance. Every bit the regal feline, she would march over the threshold, head held high, as if she were parading before a throng of patriotic subjects. "Where have you been?" I asked, before opening the door. Ping. "You're late, young lady." Ping, ping. "It's after dark." Ping, ping, ping, ping. The tempo varied from the norm. I moved toward the door and the shadowy figure sitting on the porch. As I reached for the latch, I lowered my eyes toward the bottom of the screen. I stopped short when my eyes connected with the big brown ones that pleaded with me to be let in. The problem — the creature on the other side of the screen was not my beloved pet, but a baby raccoon! - END
