HILE SUMMER IN SAN FRANCISCO IS GENERALLY a chilly time, the generosity of locals warmed my heart on more than one occasion over the past few months. First at Festival Napa Valley where the Arts for All Gala at the gorgeous Hall Winery in St. Helena raised a record-setting

$2.5 million. And again at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance where $1.8 million was raised to donate to local charities. In this issue, we share highlights from these major events as well as several other like the Oscar de la Renta fashion show which supports the League to Keep Lake Tahoe Blue. We look forward to the excitement of the fall season with feature stories previewing the Mill Valley Film Festival and the San Francisco Symphony Opening. Of course, the Opera’s opening is not to be forgotten, but hopefully, you read the cover story on the San Francisco Opera in our last issue. Fall is a time of new beginnings, and we’re thrilled to learn about what our new Mayor, London Breed, is planning for our beautiful city. All eyes are on the first African-American female mayor and in our cover story, we hear about her hopes to improve the City by the Bay. We also chat about the remarkable transformation of Rolls-Royce with CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös. We got up close and personal with Athena Blackburn, a Greek immigrant turned philanthropist whose ability to give back is inspiring. We pay a visit to the beloved Cavallo Point Lodge who turns 10 this year. We’re thrilled to welcome our new advertiser, Louis Vuitton, on our back cover and to introduce you to the brand’s latest looks in our exclusive men’s fashion spread. For our charity donation, we support the Rain Forest Trust’s efforts to preserve the world’s forests and wildlife. We invite you to attend the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals’ benefit concert sponsored by the Salesforce Foundation. The September 26 concert features Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, the Bay Area’s favorite rock band, Metallica. We thank our ambassadors who have been busy over the past two months. To coincide with our coverage of Monterey’s Automotive Week, BNY/Mellon’s Richard Davis-Lowell advises us about investment in collectible cars. Kelly E. Carter highlights the charitable events of Alpha Omega Winery including the generosity of owners Michelle and Robin Baggett. Victoria Uslaner gives us a glimpse at the genuinely exotic Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle situated at the juncture of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos. Sonya Molodetskaya opens her photo album and shares her favorite gala looks. As always we report on the latest in all things luxury from yachts to restaurants. We welcome you to share your events and comments with us. CONTACT OUR NEW PUBLISHER By emailing Olivia@HauteLivingSF.com. KIM + ONO IS YOUR NEW EXCUSE TO VISIT CHINATOWN The heart of Chinatown isn’t typically a shopping destination. However, with the opening of their gorgeous new boutique, Kim + Ono, two sisters are putting the neighborhood on the fashion map. Tiffany and Renee Tam have spent their entire lives in Chinatown— their parents have owned and operated various businesses for the past 30 years—so it was only natural that they set up shop in the area they’ve always called home. With Kim + Ono, they’re bringing luxe, one-of-a-kind hand-painted kimonos to the masses.

FIVE OF THE WORLD’S MOST ICONIC LUXURY SUPERYACHTS Nothing says unrivaled wealth and opulence like having one’s very own superyacht; from Sheikhdoms and tech powerhouses to post-Iron Curtain juggernauts, the outlandishly wealthy not only work hard to create their wealth, they work equally hard to show it. While we’re enjoying Monaco in the summertime and fall, aquatic palaces will most certainly be on display. Haute Time takes a look at the top five of the world’s largest, most astonishing yachts.

DUBAI Initially a joint venture between Blohm + Voss and Lürssen shipyards, the Andrew Winch-designed Platinum 525 was commissioned in 1996 for Prince Jefri United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Mohammed took over the project in 2006, and he renamed the Platinum 525 to what we now know as the Dubai. Among the Dubai’s most intriguing features are the split-level owner’s deck, a helipad that accommodates a 9.5-ton helicopter, multiple Jacuzzis and sunbathing areas, magnificent, delicately wrought mosaics and an astonishing circular staircase with glass steps. At 162m (531 ft, 6 in), the Dubai easily cruises at 26 knots (30 mph; 48km/h) with a crew of 88 and a crew area large enough to accommodate 115 people. While the Dubai also has the distinction of being previously named the world’s largest yacht, it’s also one of the world’s most memorable. At $400 million, it’s also among the most expensive.

DILBAR At 157m (512 ft), Dilbar is the world’s fourth-longest yacht and the world’s biggest, by volume. Built by Lürrsen, Dilbar is owned by Russian-Uzbek mining and investment giant Alisher Burkhanovich Usmanov, accommodates 40 people, a crew of 100 and a bespoke Airbus H175 helicopter for seven passengers. The helicopter also features a forward zone, complete with a lounge vibe and club seating for four and a galley with sofa seating for three in the rear. Dilbar has a displacement tonnage of 1,230 tons—equivalent to around 186 elephants, a beam width of 23m and a 25m swimming pool able to hold 225,000 liters of water. The superyacht also has 3,800m of living space for the owner and guests. While it may not be the world’s most expensive boat at almost $300 million, it certainly is one for the books.

M/Y ECLIPSE The M/Y Eclipse was built by Blohm + Voss for Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich. The exterior and interior were designed by Terence Disdale. Eclipse is the world’s second-largest private yacht at 162.5m (533 ft). It is the result of five years of intense design, conceptual development and construction. 6,000 nautical miles at 21 knots. There is a lift, underwater lights, Beach Club, gym, Jacuzzi, exterior bar and fireplace. It also features two Wärtsilä 4,847hp diesel-electric engines, a 52m (170.6 ft) owner’s deck, two helipads with hangar space for a third helicopter and a 16m swimming pool. Price tag: $390+ million.

AZZAM Azzam in Arabic means “determination; resolute.” Perhaps that is why Lürssen Yachts built superyacht Azzam for H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates, emir of Abu Dhabi and supreme commander of the UAE’s Union Defense Forces. Priced north of $600 million, the Azzam is currently the world’s largest motor yacht (and fourth most expensive). Commissioned by Belarusian-born philanthropist Andrey Melnichenko, designed by Philippe Starck and built by Nobiskrug in a project led by Dirk Kloosterman, the yacht is the largest sail-assisted motor yacht of its kind at 143m (469 ft). Reaching top speeds at 21 knots and a traveling range of 5,320 nautical miles, Sailing Yacht A boasts a glass hull for ocean viewing, a helipad on the sixth floor, three 100m masts and space for a crew of 54. The Marina’s latest bar, White Rabbit, brings new life and musical heritage to the neighborhood

and it’s hard to believe the space used to be The Matrix Fillmore. The dark masculine decor has been replaced with a bright living room-like set up with pale pink armchairs, modern couches, and graphic rugs. The entire bar feels larger, brighter, newer. “The vision for White Rabbit is to be an approachable bar that people like to hang out at throughout the day, midweek, and then on the weekends it kind of turns into a party,” Rico Avila, PlumpJack’s business development director, told Haute Living. The name White Rabbit pays homage to the building’s past. Initially opened in 1965 by the band Jefferson Airplane, The Matrix was a music venue. “The Grateful Dead played here,” Avila says. “The Doors recorded an album here. Bob Marley’s first San Francisco gigs were here.” One of Jefferson Airplane’s most popular songs at the time was White Rabbit. “That’s where the name comes from. We wanted to celebrate the history of the music, the imprint that this building put

on the music industry,” Avila explains. “We wanted to find a way aesthetically to celebrate psychedelia and that history, but be approachable and a modern place where the people who hang about in the Marina will feel comfortable at.” Avila and the design firm Shopworks realized their goal by setting up a massive vinyl record collection inside a DJ booth. A vignette of white rabbit artwork reinforces the theme. The name White Rabbit also illustrates a playfulness. There’s no pretentiousness. It’s supposed to be a neighborhood bar—the sort of place people return to again and again and the bartender knows your name. The short and straightforward cocktail menu reflects this mentality. “We originally toyed around with the idea

“All our cocktails are easy to make, and you’re not waiting five minutes for a drink. We did that very purposefully. We didn’t want to do a 12-step cocktail because it’s exhausting.” of not having a cocktail menu at all, because, with White Rabbit, we’re conscious of not being a craft cocktail bar,” Avila says. “People in San Francisco are getting tired of them. In the Marina particularly, people are looking for a vodka soda, and they’re looking for it as fast as possible. When we created the menu, it was with that in mind. All our cocktails are easy to make, and you’re not waiting five minutes for a drink. We did that very purposefully. We didn’t want to do a 12-step cocktail because it’s exhausting.” To ensure that guests don’t go hungry, there is a snack menu that consists of cheese, charcuterie, flavored popcorn, and devil’s eggs from The Balboa Cafe, which is across the street. Rosé on tap, buckets of mini bottles of champagne, and beer is also available. With only a month into business, White Rabbit seems poised for success. The changes are welcome and have breathed new life into the space.

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE Rosé is on tap and sold in carafes. White Rabbit is home to a large selection of vinyl records.

As Avila puts it, “People, who come in say, ‘Wow, this is a pleasant change. We’re pleased that you guys have done this for the neighborhood.’ “

Although it opened four years ago, Dirty Habit, at the Hotel Zelos, is as hot as ever. The fifth-floor patio was once a dead area for the hotel; however, a former executive chef had the idea of transforming the space into a 50-seat patio, and the rest is rooftop history. With various types of seating, fire elements, and industrial accents, Dirty Habit’s outdoor space feels like a private hidden courtyard. “Dirty Habit is a special place where three hours on the patio feels like 30 minutes,” the restaurant’s general manager EJ Varela says. “We’ve created a relaxing but sophisticated atmosphere to enjoy your time in. It’s like a backyard in the middle of San Francisco with trendy music and seasonal shared plates.” With its downtown location, Dirty Habit is a great spot for happy hour, so grab a group of friends and order a punch bowl and platter of charcuterie. Or plan a movie night on the rooftop. On select Sundays in September and October, the team is transforming the patio into an outdoor movie theater complete with specialty cocktails and concession-

Recently, the team added a third dimension. Rooftop 25 is their new outdoor rooftop space. The upscale modern roof feels like your cool neighbor’s backyard. Lush plants, warm wood, wicker chairs, and graphic light fixtures dot the space. “It’s a beautiful outdoor beer garden-like setting designed to be communal and casual, great for groups of friends and after work outings,” Chad Bourdon, the director of operations, explains. “We want you to feel like you’re on vacation! Our team is very proud of our food and beverage programs, and there is definitely something for everyone! HEIGHT OF FASHION Pacific Height’s Fillmore Street is the chic spot to shop in the city. Canopy’s founders show us around.

“Walking to work became a dream we wanted to realize,” Yves Behar says on why he and co-founders, Amir Mortazavi and Steve Mohebi, opened their luxe co-working space, Canopy (1) on Fillmore Street. The trio decided to design “a new type of calm, beautiful, and social space where different people with different passions meet. We found an unoccupied space on the corner of Sacramento and Fillmore; we called it Canopy and built our work-Nirvana!” As Pacific Heights is home to both their work and personal lives, Behar, Mortazavi, and Mohebi have an intimate relationship with the area. “Fillmore Street in San Francisco has organically evolved to be the perfect high street that has everything a resident in the neighborhood needs to live well,” Mortazavi explains. “It’s flanked by two incredible parks (Lafayette and Alta Plaza) which have breathtaking views of the cities and playgrounds that I frequent with my wife and son. The tennis courts and open grass fields are loads of fun for my dog to run around and meet

Mortazavi frequents the Clay Street Theater and enjoys improvisational jazz and blues at the Boom Boom Room. His favorite places to shop include “Rag and Bone (8) for jeans, 45R for the best Japanese linen and denim clothing that is dyed naturally! Plus, Ilesteva (2) shades for the blinding San Francisco summer fog.” Behar prefers “Credo (6) for non-toxic skin products, the bookstore right underneath Canopy for books, James Perse for yoga clothes, Mudpie for kids clothes, Freda Salvador (3) for shoes for my wife, and Le Labo for bath products and perfume presents.” Canopy fans can find the guys dining near the office at Out the Door (7), Jane (4), SPQR (5), Palmer’s Tavern, and Pizzeria Delfina. “I eat lunch in the neighborhood almost daily, and my go-to is either a bowl of phofrom OTD, a rainbow salad from Jane, a grilled chicken burrito from Taco Bar, or the sesame salmon salad from Glaze,” Mortazavi says. What makes the Pacific Heights so special to them? Behar eloquently puts it like this: “The neighborhood is a mix of the old classics and the new. We love the restaurants, the bars, and shopping boutiques, and we thought that more people working in the neighborhood would mean more business for those neighbors.”

We present family-friendly performances and heritage events; interactive concerts for school groups; and resources for teachers, parents, and students. FEATURE those involved in planning the opening night festivities. The Hormels are inviting friends and neighbors who have never experienced the symphony to join them on September 5. The SFS holds an incredibly special place in the duo’s hearts. Hormel has been enjoying the symphony since 1978, but his partner enthusiastically reminisces about his first time at Davies 12 years ago: “My very first experience at the symphony was when Jim took me on a date in May of 2006. I was here for the summer, and he took me to see a deliciously sumptuous production of Mahler’s 9th Symphony with Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) conducting.” The show was recorded and went on to win a Grammy. “We can always look back to that particular evening through the CD that was made that night,” Nguyen-Hormel says. “I’d been familiar with the renowned and extraordinary talent of the San Francisco Symphony, but that was my first live event, and I was hooked immediately.” The Hormel’s admiration for MTT (the SFS’s music director), love of the symphony, and eagerness for the opening is contagious. Hearing them talk, one can’t help but want to participate in the extravagant evening. Spivey believes the Hormels—and the tireless SFS staff and volunteers—are so passionate about the orchestra because now, more than ever, the arts are essential. “Society is craving humanity and connection on a more personal and human level,” he says. “The shared experience of attending an SFS performance can be cathartic

Music is one of the most powerful ways to express emotion and advocate for the things in which we believe most deeply. Davies Symphony Hall has become a wonderful sanctuary and gathering place.” With the 2018 opening night gala, the Hall will also officially become a beacon of inclusion and champion of progressive values. “It’s quite appropriate for the Symphony to present an opening night chaired by people from the LGBT constituency,” Hormel says. “It seems fitting given the nature and diversity and concern for others that is shown by this city.” Always eloquent, Spivey points out that the SFS is merely keeping up with the times. San Franciscans are hungry for more enticing and meaningful experiences that showcase all walks of life. “San Francisco is a unique and special place where there is an unprecedented sense of community, awareness, social engagement, and progressive thinking. This is fertile land for the arts and nearly any creative endeavor,” he says. “Curiosity seekers and cultural enthusiasts are the most common type of person. SF is a place where people want to experience new things and have their thinking challenged.” That’s exactly what concertgoers will witness at the Symphony’s coming out party on September 5.

After a 10-year stint on the East Coast, Geeslin recently returned to San Francisco eager to bring the next generation of patrons to the SFS. Geeslin knew she wanted to engage the local community for the event, but not greater San Francisco, instead, the neighborhood that surrounds Davies—Hayes Valley. The area has seen tremendous growth since Geeslin was a child and she hopes to highlight its new restaurant scene. “It’s become the epicenter of the San Francisco food scene, and so my thought was, ‘Let’s make the theme Spotlight on Hayes Valley.’ Let’s show everybody who comes to the Symphony how much this place has changed. Come hang out down here. Come be a part of this cultural shift in San Francisco.” Partygoers can look forward to bites and drinks from Barcino, Dobbs Ferry, Smuggler’s Cove, and more.

5 FILMS YOU SHOULD NOT MISS Over 200 films are showing during the 10-day Mill Valley Film Festival. If you only have time to see a few, here are the movies we recommend.

Ewan McGregor in 2016

A Private War The official opening night film is based on the life of Marie Colvin, a celebrated war journalist who reports from the front of modern day battle lines in places like Syria. Rosamund Pike stars as Colvin in this movie directed by Matthew Heineman that’s bound to receive Oscar buzz. Kannapolis: A Moving Portrait Bay Area native Finn Taylor directed this film that is a compilation of footage and photographs shot during the Great Depression. Finn paired the movie with a score created by violinist Jenny Scheinman. At the screenings, Scheinman will perform the music live alongside the film, creating a unique movie music experience.

If Beale Street Could Talk The closing night film, director Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk stars Kiki Layne, Stephen James, and Regina King. It tells the story of a pregnant African-American woman who tries to clear her imprisoned finance’s name. Roma Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma tells the dramatic story of a family in Mexico City in the 1970s. It centers on two housekeepers who act as the glue that holds the family together. The Parting Glass Stephen Moyer makes his directorial debut in The Parting Glass, a film that depicts an adult family on a road trip in the aftermath of the death of their youngest sister. Anna Paquin stars as the dead sister, with Cynthia Nixon, Melissa Leo, and Denis O’Hare playing her greiving family.

She agreed to do the cover only if the magazine hired its first black photographer to shoot her—and so she joins a select group of visionaries who put the black fashion community on the map. Recently, a group of these pioneers from the seventies—designers Stephen Burrows and Kevan Hall and the first black supermodel Pat Cleveland—gathered at SFMOMA for a special event. It was an exclusive evening where the movie Versailles ’73 American Runway Revolution was featured and followed by a lively Q&A where the players discussed their triumphs at a fashion show in France that put American designers and black supermodels on the map.

LONDON BREED

SAN FRANCISCO’S NEW BREED OF LEADERSHIP BY: TERESA RODRIGUEZ • PHOTOS BY DREW ALTIZER

IT WAS LONDON BREED’S EXPERIENCE AS GALILEO HIGH SCHOOL’S HOMECOMING QUEEN RUNner-up that catapulted her into a life driven by leadership and change. She enjoyed the excitement of the race and so the next year, as a senior, Breed ran for office. She won student body Vice President, and it was then that politics got into her blood. Although Breed never imagined that she would run for a position as profound as the mayor of San Francisco, her life seemed to poetically unfold—leading her to the gilded dome of San Francisco’s City Hall.

an advocate, or at least advice. They told me plainly: ‘We don’t work with public housing residents.’ I’ve lived in poverty. I’ve seen my friends, my community forced from the city I call home.” It is her raw life experiences that make Breed an ideal mayor for San Francisco. San Francisco is a city of stark contrast. It is evident by the homeless on our streets blocks from multi-million dollar homes owned by the country’s wealthiest entrepreneurs. The Brookings Institution, a policy research center in Washington, D.C. lists San Francisco in the top five

MY TOP THREE PRIORITIES ARE HOUSING, HOMELESSNESS, AND PUBLIC SAFETY. BY ADDING 5,000 NEW UNITS OF HOUSING, WE CAN HELP FAMILIES STAY TOGETHER IN SAN FRANCISCO AND HELP MORE PEOPLE EXIT HOMELESSNESS.

MLB: Work hard in school, of course. I am a big proponent of paid internships—when I was Executive Director of the AfricanAmerican Art & Culture Complex, we paid our interns, and it made them take their responsibilities more seriously and stay out of trouble. They are a great way to figure out what you like, and perhaps more importantly, what you do not like. Either way, you will gain valuable life and career experience. However, more housing does not mean homelessness is fixed. This is why we are working to expand our suite of available homeless services. We are continuing to build Navigation Centers that provide beds and shelter, but also connect people to long-term services to ensure they do not end up back on the streets. It also includes helping people avoid ever becoming homeless in the first place through programs such as rapid re-housing, rent subsidies, and tenant legal defense services. Regarding public safety, I am committed to adding 250 new San Francisco Police officers over the next four years and investing in long-term improvement projects that will make our streets cleaner and safer. But a severe public health crisis has emerged on our streets as a result of the nationwide opioid epidemic. That’s why I am also committed to implementing innovative, evidence-based solutions such as safe injection sites, which will not only get needles off of our streets and improve public safety but more importantly save lives, because we have seen time and time again that incarcerating people for drug use is not effective in helping those people get treatment for their addiction. HL: The homeless, drug users, and dirty streets are serious problems and getting worse. It is hurting our city’s image, our commerce, and tourism, how are you going to solve this problem? MLB: Throughout my short time as Mayor, I have been taking a series of unannounced visits to different neighborhoods in our city, and it’s clear that the status quo on our streets is unacceptable. One of my top priorities is addressing our homelessness crisis, and this means getting people into care and shelter. In the new two-year city budget I just signed, we are allocating an additional $60 million in funding for critical homeless services, which will create 430 new permanent supportive housing units, open a new Navigation Center, and support rapid re-housing programs. We’re investing $800 million in constructing and preserving nearly 3,000 units of affordable housing. I am also working to open a first-in-the-nation safe injection site to prevent overdoses and the spread of disease, while also reducing the public drug use we see on our streets. We recently premiered a demonstration site at Glide to give the public a sense of what these sites will look like and the benefits they will bring to the community. I know this idea is controversial, but it has worked successfully in other countries, and the medical community is on our side. This is about addressing a public health crisis and getting drug use off of our streets.

COVER STORY to improve our conservatorship program, so we can help those who are unable to care for themselves due to severe mental illness and drug addiction get the care they need. It is not humane to continue to allow them to suffer on our streets. HL: How would you like San Franciscans to support you? Jacket and shirt: ZEGNA

MLB: There is an interesting phenomenon in politics where every few years we have these huge campaigns, with hundreds of supporters coming out to support their favorite candidate or ballot measures, and then that engagement tails off when it comes to enacting the changes we campaigned on. One of the things I am trying to do as Mayor is to be out in the community as much as

possible to keep people engaged. We have significant issues that are going to require buy-in from our diverse communities, and for me, that means that I need to bring my message to people where they are. I want people to know what is happening at City Hall, and I want to hear from voices outside of the city government because no one has a monopoly on good ideas.

San Francisco’s Chief of Police Bill Scott with Breed at the Heroes and Hearts Luncheon in 2017

HL: What legacy do you hope to leave behind? MLB: I look at this question a couple of different ways. First, I want the City to be better off after I am finished as Mayor—the streets are cleaner, our homeless population is getting care and shelter, Muni is more efficient, and housing is

Jacket and shirt: ZEGNA

more affordable for families and working people. I am not afraid to take bold action when I think it is right and many issues are facing our City at the moment that requires us to be courageous in trying new solutions until we get it

Breed at an event

right. In a broader sense, I want to open doorways for people who previously have not had them opened. This means continuing to promote programs to help our underserved communities, supporting our students with paid internship programs to give them a foot in the door to start their careers, and appointing people from all of our diverse communities to boards and commissions. I want to cultivate the next generation of leaders in San Francisco. HL: Who are your heroes? MLB: Ms. Comelia Brown, my grandmother who raised me, and Senator Kamala Harris, who has been one of my greatest mentors. They are both incredible role models and showed me what it means to serve your communities, advocate for what is right, and how to be resilient in the face of adversity. HL: What do you love most about San Francisco? MLB: The diversity of our neighborhoods. I love that you can walk a few blocks from the Financial District and be in the heart of Chinatown and then walk a little further and be in the North Beach, all three of which feel entirely different. Breed is a woman who is very clear about where she stands on any issue and is vocal about it. She is a passionate leader who has zero tolerance for the politics of politics. Unlike other political figures, Breed has no time for rhetoric. She understands that the issues facing our beloved city are dramatic and fast action needs to happen. Mayor Breed is out walking the streets, talking to the locals, and finding solutions to improve the City, not only for this generation but also for the next generations. It is with anticipation that we watch how our young, female Mayor leads San Francisco into this exciting new era.

lthough it’s not in San Francisco, Sausalito’s Cavallo Point Lodge might be the most quintessentially San Franciscan hotel in Northern California. Everything about the resort is characteristic of what the Bay Area is known for—food and wine, wellness and outdoor living, respect for history, sustainability, inclusivity, and giving back to the community. Throw in its proximity to SF’s most well-known attraction—the Golden Gate Bridge—and you’ve got a lodge that genuinely represents the place it is from. When you stay at Cavallo Point, it’s almost as if the entire city consumes you. Sit on one of the wide porches at sunset, and you can’t help but feel enchanted. The foghorn rings in the distance as fingers of white clouds lick the pristine Bay waters. The lights of the city begin to shine brightly, twinkling like beacons of innovation. There is no other place like San Francisco on earth, and so, there is no other place like the Cavallo Point Lodge.

HIS YEAR THE LODGE IS TURNING 10 AND ALTHOUGH THERE IS MUCH TO CELEBRATE AS CAVALLO POINT HAS established itself as the leading luxury hotel in the region, founders Michael Freed and Peter Heinemann, aren’t resting on their laurels. For Freed and Heinemann the hotel’s success has been a long time coming: the project took ten years to come to fruition. It all started when Freed was walking his dog around Fort Baker, a derelict military base that dates back to 1850. “All these buildings were here, empty, and in dire need of repair,” Freed recently told Haute Living over lunch at Murray Circle, Cavallo Point’s fine dining restaurant. “It was on the National Register of Historic Places. The federal government, the Department of Interior, had an obligation to restore the building and had to come up with a plan to restore it. They thought the best way to save the buildings was to come up with a conference center.” However, the plan was to build a hotel that had up to

350 rooms—something that caused Freed and other prominent locals concern. At the time, Freed and his team was running the smaller environmentallyfriendly Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur. “The Sausalito community thought that was too large, as did I. So we submitted a proposal for a 150-room lodge, where we would have both leisure travelers as well as group travelers.” Once Freed and Heinemann’s proposal was selected, the real work began:

it’s a whole range,” Jacobs explains. “People will come in because they want

THE CURTAIN HAS FALLEN ON THE 13TH SEASON OF FESTIVAL NAPA VALLEY. TEN DAYS OF world-class talent has left hearts full and minds inspired. From the stunning performances to the unprecedented generosity at The Arts for All Gala, much of the magic that happened at the festival encompasses community, strength, passion, and heart. This year’s season was in dedication to the brave firefighters who fought the 2017 Napa fires—those who risked their lives in preserving the beautiful valley. The art, wine, and music that infiltrates the valley for ten days have a common thread: they invite us to enjoy, to share, and to celebrate. This year’s festival was genuinely spectacular. A heartfelt thanks to the festival’s founder and president, Rick Walker, its COO Sonia Tolbert, and executive producer Charles Letourneau. This trio and their entire team outdid themselves. Here we share the most memorable highlights of the 2018 Festival. 66

EVENTS OPENING NIGHT AT MEADOWOOD

Nadine Sierra and Jonathan Tetelman mesmerized the guests at the opening night concert, which was part of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Vocal Arts Series. It was a dazzling alfresco performance on the lush Vintner’s Glen at Meadowood. Tenor Bryan Hymel was originally set to perform, but he was not able to come due to illness. Tetelman was brought in to replace Hymel at the last minute. He arrived in Napa at two in the

Puccini to Verdi. They received a well-deserved standing ovation. After the concert, the elegantly-clad guests socialized under the stars and enjoyed a delicious three-course dinner prepared by Meadowood’s expert culinary team led by estate chef Alejandro Ayala. Guests included Gordon and Ann Getty, Rick and Karen Walker, Sonia Tolbert, Timothy and Athena Blackburn, Antonio and Rita Castellucci, Darioush and Shahpar Khaledi, Robin and Michelle Baggett, Steven and Claire Stull, Maria Manetti Shrem and Jan Shrem, Kathryn and Craig Hall, Jose Luis Nazar, Rich and Leslie Frank, Pam and Dick Kramlich, Michael and Kathleen Covarrubias, Michael and Pepper Jackson, Gorretti and Lawrence Lui, and Ted and Pamala Deikel.

owned winery; to commemorate the occasion, Festival Napa Valley presented the legendary Grupo Compay Segundo band–direct from Cuba for their first performance in the U.S. in 20 years. The group was founded by the late Compay Segundo, one of the original members of the Buena Vista Social Club, the international recording sensation. Today it’s helmed by his son, Salvador Repilado Labrada. The band’s fantastic journey began in Havana with a stop over in France to pick up the proper paperwork to arrive in the U.S. However, two of the players were held up in Paris because their visas had not arrived in time for them to come to the States. By a small miracle, they landed in Napa just in time to perform to the excited patrons. Labrada brought a vibrancy of epic proportions to the stage! TASTE OF NAPA

One of the favorite festival events every summer is the food-centric Taste of Napa. It is a beautiful spread featuring the best culinary and wine collections in Napa Valley. This year’s gathering was at the intimate Vista Collina Resort—a new hotel in the area. More than 70 local wineries, restaurants, and top artisans showcased their scrumptious fare for guests to enjoy. The afternoon also featured live music by the renowned harpist and violinist Carlos Reyes and vocalist Tony Lindsay. Famed chef Ryan Scott also made an appearance. The Reserve Tasting Salon offered sips of Napa Valley’s most prestigious wines.

WORLD PREMIERE! JOSHUA BELL PERFORMS “THE RED VIOLIN” WITH LIVE ORCHESTRA

Acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell returned to perform the outstanding music he recorded in 1998 for the Academy Award-winning film, The Red Violin. The film tells the story of a mysterious red violin, crafted in the late 1600s by Italian instrument-maker Nicolo Bussotti. It chronicles the exciting voyage of this unique violin throughout history. Inside Yountville’s Lincoln Theatre, the dramatic and thrilling movie was shown with

ARTS FOR ALL GALA AND AUCTION AT HALL WINERY

The Arts for All Gala is the most significant arts charity event, and Hall Winery hosted it in St. Helena for the second year in a row. This evening encapsulates the core values of the festival family of patrons, highlighting in all its glory the unbelievable generosity of those in attendance. Color wonder was the theme—colorful paper lanterns, string lights, and a stage made of thousands of bright fresh roses courtesy of Passion Roses served as a delightful backdrop. Taking to the stage in grand fashion was the iconic artist, actor, and Grammy-Award winning singer Kristin Chenoweth; a small-town girl from Oklahoma whose dreams of becoming a singer were realized when her parents gave her the opportunity to perform at a young age. She was accompanied by ten students selected from five Napa county public high school choral groups. With a captivating quick-wit and magnetism, Chenoweth commanded the room of 400 guests instantaneously. The auction lots were some of the most outstanding experiences ever created. From chartered yachts in the Mediterranean to a private concert with Andrea Bocelli in his Tuscan hometown to dinner with Sophia Loren at her home in Switzerland to walking the red carpet at the AFI Life Achievement Awards, the lots were spectacular! A whopping $2.5 million was raised so that every child in Napa can have the opportunity to realize their passions for arts education. The funds also support free and affordable access to the festival’s performances and provide scholarships to emerging musicians. Paddles were raised high and proud as bidders from every corner of the room competed for a chance to win the fantastic trips. The evening concluded with a rockin’

PATRON DINNER AT FAR NIENTE WINERY

The full final night of the 13th season was marked with dinner atop the hillside at one of Napa Valley’s finest and most historic wineries, the one and only Far Niente. Patrons dined alfresco on a meal prepared by the winery’s estate chef, Sarah Walz. Throughout the sumptuous dinner, closing speeches, toasts, and tributes were made. A surprise musical act—four young Russian folk artists performing renditions of Piazzolla

With magnificent performances in the magical settings of participating wineries, Festival Napa Valley continues to pave the way for young, aspiring artists whose hearts are touched by music. The opportunities received solely from the funds raised by this incredible event poignantly affects the lives of our next generation of artists. The way music livens the soul and inspires one to feel and grow are the notes that festival goers take away. Please book your ticket early for the 2019 Festival at www.FestivalNapaValley.org.

nuggled between the shimmering Pacific Ocean and the sleepy Santa Ynez Mountains is the 78-acre Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara resort. The location of the resort is one of the coveted aspects of the property—it is the only oceanfront resort in Santa Barbara that has direct beach access.

The name Bacara is a fusion of two words. The first part of the name is

from Santa Barbara and the second part is from Anacapa Island, an island off of the coast of the resort. This sacred land was once home to the Chumash Native Americans; the Chumash meaning of Anacapa is mirage— which is what the resort seems like when driving up to its magnificent fountained courtyard. 19 villas are nestled throughout the lush property. With a unique Spanish-style design, each of the 358 suites is beautifully appointed with a deep bath and a private patio wrapped in colorful bougainvillea. The piece de resistance is the four-story, 42,000 square foot holistic wellness retreat. The property is both kid and pet-friendly. For the active family, the list of adventures is quite extensive. There are two kid-friendly pools, along with a cute “beach” for little ones. For families who want some privacy, getting a cabana at the top pool is a fantastic way to spend the day. There, guests have a cabana attendant who takes food and drink orders. Along The pool

Look in any direction, and the pristine mar is there—even down. Each thatched-roof suite has sections where the floor is glass bottomed. Guests can see fluorescent blue trumpetfish swimming in the sea while taking a shower. Lie in the massive bed, and the water’s reflection shimmers on the ceiling. With such a serene setting at Palafitos, it’s impossible not to feel instantly relaxed—and insanely pampered. Suites boast the aforementioned king bed with plush bedding, indoor and outdoor showers, a twoperson jacuzzi, and balcony with a miniature infinity plunge pool. Olivia Hsu Decker: Tell us about the split of Rolls-Royce and Bentley and the different paths they have taken. Torsten Müller-Ötvös: There is a very big difference between the two brands now from the old days when the brands have been very similar, only differentiated by the radiator grill.

With Black Badge, I call it the alter ego of Rolls-Royce. It’s the darker, more menacing side of the brand that has played well.

When the two brands split up between BMW and VW, the brands departed in a very clever way. They are very well positioned in the different markets. We are around $150K more than Bentley in every price class. For example, our SUV Cullinan is about $360,000 base price vs. the Bentley’s SUV Bentaga at $200,000. It’s important to notice that we are not competitors to each other. It’s very different from what people think. You hardly

see customers of ours buy a Bentley or vice versa. There is a very different segment and target group. We are not stealing each other’s customers because we are in very different league. TMO: Bespoke is the heart of our business now, nearly 100% of our cars leave the plant bespoke. It’s quite understandable because when you are spending such an amount of money for one of our products you want this product to be very special and truly unique. This is exactly what we did for

Ben Sloss’ Dawn. We see nearly 30% of customers worldwide first visit our plant in Goodwood and meet with our designers before they finalize their specifications. You sit down with our designers and engineers to create a masterpiece. It’s quite a remarkable experience for the client. Then, when you receive the special bespoke car of your choice, it’s a very exciting event.

white and red gown! The challenge was using the lady’s room. It was a very tight fit into a stall. When I got home, I couldn’t reach the zip-

per on the back of the dress, so I ran outside and asked my neighbor, a woman, to unzip me in the middle of the night. Otherwise, I would have had to sleep in the gown and sleep in the same position all night. Vasily and I made that gown shorter for Vivienne Westwood’s Paris Fashion Week show. Again, there was a funny story: I had to change in the car between shows. To get that dress on, I had to lay down flat and have two of my friends squeeze me into it. We had a window open, so it was very entertaining for the guy on a motorcycle next to our car at the stoplight. I was half naked! 2. My love for fine wine and beautiful landscapes drew me to live in Napa Valley, but it was my desire to work for a winery that gives back as much as it does produce great wine that led me to Alpha Omega. Alpha Omega underwrote 100% of the expenses for the two celebrations. Some people bought tickets so the winery could invite first responders and fire victims. Because interacting with elephants who have been rescued from dire straits is a unique way to explore the landscape. your private outdoor shower is a breathtaking way to start the day. In the world of glamping, the Four Seasons Tented Camp meets at the highest point of luxury and experiential travel. Every fantasy of adventure and comfort in the jungle is realized. It’s a cross between a Somerset Maugham novel and a tropical oasis. Communing with the gentle majestic elephants is truly unforgettable. The camp is set amid a lush bamboo jungle with 15 luxurious tents and a two-bedroom Explorer’s Lodge. Guests feel as though they’re 19th-century explorers surrounded by treasures from faraway lands. Built on stilts overlooking the Mekong, each tent has

Sundowners at the famed Burma Bar are the perfect way to share experiences with fellow glampers. With its world-class chefs, the dining tent—Nong Yao Restaurant—create Thai delicacies and Western classics. I recently chatted with Maryles Casto, the founder of Casto Travel, a premier luxury travel agency in the Bay Area. An adventurous traveler, Casto has been to the four corners of the

planet, and she says her recent family vacation to the Golden Triangle was indeed a once in a lifetime experience. Traveling with her son Marc, his wife Julie, and their two daughters, Casto wanted to find a place where the family had not been and where her granddaughters could have an excellent educational adventure. They stayed in the Explorer’s Lodge with its private swimming pool. Days were spent with the elephants and in the evenings, the family bonded by talking and playing board games—not watching television or the computer. A particular highlight for the Castos was planting five trees on the property. This will be the excuse for them to come back and see how their trees have grown.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS GALA RAISES MORE THAN $100K It was an evening of heartwarming stories and stylish fashions at the 13th annual Dress for Success gala. This year’s theme was Success: You Wear It Well. Sharon Seto chaired the event and thanks to her enthusiasm it was an overwhelming success, raising over $150,000. The funds are used to empower women to achieve economic independence through classes, training, and giving them clothes to wear at interviews. The gala included an exciting plus-size runway show from local designer Matthew Paul Robinson. Honoree Margaret Mitchell gave a passionate speech about her life and the people who helped her reach her success. INSIDE LAKE TAHOE’S ANNUAL OSCAR DE LA RENTA FASHION SHOW For the 49th year in a row, the League to Save Lake Tahoe has raised an extraordinary amount of money—$870,000 to be exact— at its annual Oscar de la Renta fashion show. The event, which was sponsored by Saks Fifth Avenue and AT&T, was held on the Lake Tahoe shoreline. The luncheon and fashion show date back to 1969 when designer Bill Blass showed his latest collection to loyal clients and friends in the area. This August, an elite group of San Francisco socialites boarded a private jet on Saturday morning and were whisked off to Tahoe to enjoy the festivities. Sonya Molodetskaya served as co-pilot, and the plane was filled with her friends Farah Makras, Carolyn Chang, Jane Mudge, and Jane Mudge, Farah Makras, Komal Shah, Sonya Molodetskaya, Carolyn Chang

V FOUNDATION RAISES RECORD-BREAKING $18 MILLION On August 4, sports legends and winemakers came together to fight cancer at the V Foundation’s 20th annual Wine Celebration. Nearly $2 million was raised for breast cancer research, and another $16 million will support various cancer research grants. The live auction event took place at Nickel & Nickel Winery and featured five different hosts: Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski of the Duke University men’s basketball team; Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts; Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton; football star Joe Theismann; and sports commentator Lou Holtz. Roberts and Hamilton gave moving speeches about their battles with the disease. With more than 100 cancer survivors in attendance, it was an inspirational and hopeful evening.

ZEN REVIVAL, MAJESTIC NAPA VALLEY ESTATE ON 285 ACRES

112

SF_ Zen revival_9_6_KS.indd 112

9/6/18 3:55 PM

Wine Country living and California indoor-outdoor architecture are one at this majestic Napa Valley estate. Located on approximately 285 acres on a crest of the Mayacamas Mountains, above the valley floor off the Oakville Grade, the trophy residence presents an unparalleled opportunity to purchase not only a piece of architecture with enveloping views, but also a chance to own a frame of mind—one of privacy, peace, and tranquility. The seller purchased the property in 2012 as a gateway for his growing family. At the time, the home was under construction and destined to be a then-so-popular château-style home until the new owner’s family changed its fate. The goal was to lose the McMansion feel and create a retreat that was rustic yet refined while celebrating its surrounds. The family called upon architect and designer Russell Groves (with whom they had already collaborated on seven projects together). Groves and his team spent more than two years renovating the property, opening the space and bringing the outdoors in. The result is a zen-like haven where generous spaces flow harmoniously from one to the next, where the line between indoor and outdoor is seamless, and enveloping views captivate from every room. The owner was quoted in an Architectural Digest (Dec 4, 2016) feature of the property: “’You get this coastal fog that settles in at night. After I wake up, I’ll walk around the gardens and watch the mist burn off. When the sun breaks through those clouds and the views open, it’s just spectacular.’” Spectacular, they are. Especially considering the home’s vantage point with 360 degree panoramic views. From the main living room looking over the terrace and pool, you have a direct east-facing view of Napa Valley from Mount Saint Helena to the north, to downtown Napa to the south. From the home’s front garden courtyard, you look west over the verdant mountain range dotted with vineyards among large growth redwood and pine forests–the perfect foreground for dramatic sunsets.

HauteRESIDENCE The estate comprises three parcels: an approximately 123-acre parcel with 9,502-square foot main residence with six bedrooms and five and one-half bathrooms and a 1,090- square foot, two bedroom, two bath guest home, an approximately 95-acre buildable parcel and a 67-acre parcel. The main residence’s sprawling open-plan, triple-height-ceiling living areas are designed for entertaining and open to expansive terraces, level lawns, infinity edge swimming pool, and manicured, drought-tolerant gardens. No expense was spared when it came to construction and craftsmanship. The home’s façade is cedar in a custom-made grey stain, and features cedar corbels and rafters. There are metal clad doors, copper downspouts and gutters, and a stately stone entry wall to the home. Upon entering, you immediately find yourself in the great room, a room of epic proportions yet completely livable. The space soars thanks to a triple height exposed beam gable ceiling. There is a dramatic built-in fireplace anchored by a custom wood paneled wall, triple-entry French doors, a formal dining area with seating for 14, 70-foot retractable pocket sliding glass doors opening to an indoor/outdoor terrace with fireplace lounge and outdoor grill and bar, and our favorite, a bespoke Russell Groves metal chandelier that is simply badass, edgy, and chic. The kitchen is slick, expansive and decked out with top of the line appliances, two sinks, a massive center island with counter seating, a breakfast nook, an adjacent butler’s kitchen and a wine storage area with 300+ bottle capacity. There is also a home gym, two additional guest suites, an office with matte

charcoal brick fireplace and built-ins, and a home theater with sunken stadium seating, 12-foot long sofas, and soundproof walls. Perhaps the highlight of the main home’s design is the owner’s suite. Rivaling any six-star resort, the suite is in its own private wing with expansive eastern views from a central picture window. There are two sets of French doors; one leading to a meditation garden, the other leading to the pool terrace. Distressed oak paneling, a fireplace, and vaulted double height ceilings further the room’s allure. The spa-like bathroom features dual custom vanity with black walnut cabinetry and marble countertop, mosaic marble tile floors, three walk-in custom closets, a massage room, separate dressing room, and a central glass-enclosed dual rain shower with adjacent solid marble soaking tub. If that wasn’t enough, glass receding pocket doors open to a dual outdoor shower sited within an enclosed garden terrace. For lucky guests, there is a second house located across a level lawn and manicured garden approached by a meandering gravel path. It offers quite the sanctuary with two en suite bedrooms, a vaulted airy living room, kitchenette, and French doors leading to a secluded view-side seating terrace. Additional highlights include a tennis court, a poolside lounge with fire table, an oversized three-car garage with Tesla charging station, state-of-the-art home audio and security, Nest climate control system, a 10,000-gallon water storage tank, V8 engine powered generator, and a 1,000 gallon in-ground propane tank. And there’s also the entire Napa Valley at your fingertips. This property is offered for sale at $25,500,000.
