Publisher’s LETTER AS WE BID GOODBYE TO 2018 AND WELCOME THE new year, let me reflect on the extraordinary nine months since I took over Haute Living San Francisco last March. We published four issues and with this, our fifth, we continue to strive for improvements. I hope we enrich your experience and brighten your days with our exclusive content on fascinating people, exciting events, exotic places, and noteworthy charities. We are grateful to you, our readers and subjects, for taking the time to read our magazine, share your inspiring and interesting stories in our pages, and support the charity events we sponsor. In this issue, our cover story features the legendary international vintner and entrepreneur Jean-Charles Boisset. We invite you to journey into his magical world and learn about his new book The Alchemist Of the Senses. We celebrate the upcoming opening of the San Francisco Ballet and its 86th season by highlighting the contagious passion that fuels every aspect of the company, from the dancers to the auxiliary. We introduce Esa-Pekka Salonen—the new music director designate of the San Francisco Symphony who will replace Michael Tilson Thomas when he retires in 2020. We salute MTT’s 25 years of excellent leadership at the symphony and look back at some of his accomplishments with the orchestra. We also chat with Gorretti Lui, chair of the symphony’s annual Chinese New Year Concert. The event, which is February 16, promises to be a fantastic performance, party, and banquet. We get close up with e-commerce entrepreneur Julie Wainwright and learn about her booming designer consignment business, The RealReal. Her company is extending the life cycle of luxury fashion like no other. OLIVIA HSU DECKER OWNER/PUBLISHER Olivia@HauteLivingSF.com Keep up with us digitally at www.HauteLivingSF.com and find daily postings of San Francisco Bay Area stories.

Our Wine Country ambassador Kelly E. Carter gives us a sneak preview of 2019’s fundraising calendar showcasing what events you should not miss this year. The generosity of this resilient region recovering from devastating wildfires is remarkable! Our health and wellness ambassador, Lydia Graham, kick starts 2019 by opening Dr. Dean Ornish’s new wellness book Undo It! The guide details how simple lifestyle changes can fight cancer, diabetes, heart disease, weight gain—and ultimately, slow the aging process to live a better and longer life. We look forward to bringing you more captivating content in each issue and wish you a healthy, joyful, and prosperous new year. Cheers to Luxury Lifestyle With Purpose, Olivia

Beverage director Matthew Dulle spent two years curating a list of over 1000 bottles and is opening up the extensive cellar to wine lovers. His collection includes old, historical bottles from famed California producers like Ridge Vineyards (he has over 60 different labels) and classic Napa Cab and Bordeaux. To ensure that oenophiles have plenty of access to the great wine, the team is introducing The Lazy Bear Den. It’s for people who want to sip a glass of wine, but not commit to the ticketed multi-course meal.

ACTOR OLIVIA WILDE SHARES HER CLEAN BEAUTY SECRETS Olivia Wilde is an actor, mother, and most recently a clean beauty activist. A year and a half ago, the star joined forces with True Botanicals, a San Francisco-based natural skincare collection founded by Hillary Peterson. Wilde came to town for the opening of the brand’s first boutique, a skincare sanctuary in Jackson Square. A natural beauty, Wilde’s passion for conscious consumerism is obvious. She’s incredibly down to earth, and genuine—qualities that celebrities dealing with the grind of back-to-back interviews can sometimes lack. Both candid and sincere, Wilde shared insight on her youth, current life, and what True Botanicals item she can’t live without.

STEP INSIDE SAN FRANCISCO’S DESIGNER PENTHOUSES If you’re looking for a luxury apartment in San Francisco, there are a plethora of options available, from The Avery to One Steuart Lane. However, if you’re looking for a luxury penthouse apartment outfitted by a local interior designer, there are only two options: Kendall Wilkinson’s two-bedroom at 181 Fremont and Michael Friedes’ Steinway Suite at The Harrison. Wilkinson’s fully-furnished half-floor residence is move-in ready and sits more than 700-feet above the city’s streets. Friedes’ penthouse is designed around the Steinway Model M Spiro high-resolution player piano. The two-bedroom 49th-floor corner penthouse, also with excellent views, is move-in ready, too.

STUNNING INDIAN JEWELRY EXHIBIT NOW AT LEGION OF HONOR East Meets West: Jewels of the Maharajas From The Al Thani Collection is on view at the Legion of Honor now through February 24. The not-to-bemissed exhibition features over 150 precious Indian objects, collected by His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani. It’s a stunning mixture of old and new. Items—necklaces, brooches, bracelets, and pieces worn on ceremonial occasions like daggers date back to the 1600s. In the early 20th century, European houses like Cartier were inspired by the opulent style of Indian jewelers and copied it—these pieces are also a part of the collection.

CARNEROS RESORT’S NEW SPA OFFERS LUXE RELAXATION When you’re in need of a hard-earned break, book a room, brunch, and spa treatment at the Carneros Resort and Spa in Napa Valley. Last summer, the hotel debuted a $3.5 million renovation, and the new spa is completely transformed. Designed by Nina Chiappa Interiors with TLCD Architecture, the spa mimics the farmhouse style that is prevalent throughout the resort. A new spa requires a unique treatment menu and Carneros’ does not disappoint. There are a variety of massages including an aromatherapy-infused herbal poultice massage, a Himalayan salt stone massage, and a wellness spot treatment that features CBD salve.

THE BIG REVEAL A LOOK AT MORAN YACHT & SHIP’S KISMET

“I THINK THE OWNER’S PASSION FOR YACHTING, AND MORE SPECIFICALLY his boat, is immediately evident as you step onboard Kismet,” says Christopher Callahan, broker and marketing director at Moran Yacht & Ship Inc., worldclass leader in the sale, construction, and charter of luxury superyachts. Having set the standard with the first Kismet (now renamed Global), billionaire Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham Football Club owner Shahid Khan’s second Kismet is no less unforgettable.

Delivered by Lürssen in 2014 and designed by Espen Oeino, Kismet remains

one of the world’s most iconic superyachts and is still very much ahead of its time. Available for charter and sale for the first time with Moran Yacht & Ship, the 95.2m (13.8m beam) Kismet is a custom motor yacht outfitted to accommodate 12 guests in seven cabins (including two VIP suites). It has three outdoor lounges spaces, a pool and hot tub complex that is every bit as opulent as it is extravagant, and high-profile passengers—Jay-Z and Beyoncé among them.

Kismet is the culmination of a six-year journey, one in which the expansion

of Khan’s wealth and influence also coincided with a need to accommodate a growing, adrenaline-fueled constituency. Unlike the first Kismet, however, 68m wasn’t enough. According to the story, Khan’s design brief contained three words: “make it impressive.” And impressive it is.

Kismet comes with its very own cinema, a full-service spa, indoor/outdoor

dining spaces for 12 (bar included) and a formal interior dining room with a staircase that leads to the ballroom (as one would expect). There are also two helipads, one on the foredeck, doubling as a basketball court; the other, an outdoor lounge. The upper foredeck also boasts a large mosaic-tiled pool with an inset Jacuzzi. Vision is the key, as Callahan explains: “Owner requirements certainly

Kismet’s availability comes at a time when yacht builders and brokers are

riding the wave of increased sales. But in an industry that’s seen its share of challenges, Callahan is quick to point out that Moran Yacht & Ship’s approach to luxury shipping—making expertly crafted experiences integral to its stateof-the-art attention to detail—is why the brand has loomed large in the minds

of yachting enthusiasts for nearly three decades. “While there have been some market gyrations recently, we continue to be optimistic on all fronts [sales, charter, new construction],” he says. “As a testament to this, we have recently signed a 116m new build called Project Testarossa.”

Furthermore, the trend toward eco-friendly technology onboard superyachts

has not been lost. As the University of Connecticut School of Business graduate PHOTOS COURTESY OF GUILLAME PLISSON

proudly notes regarding the Ken Freivokh-designed 106m Oceanco Black Pearl, “The concept was to create one of the world’s most technologically advanced superyachts offering true zero-emissions cruising—virtually unheard of, especially for a yacht of her size. I think we will continue to see more advancement on this front, since the environment and seeking its natural beauty is a cornerstone of yachting.”

Moran Yacht & Ship currently has eight projects in progress ranging from

64m to 142m. In 2018 alone, the firm signed 109m, 116m, and 118m projects. Due for delivery soon is the 95m Lürssen Project Fiji. It will be available for charter this summer in the Mediterranean and, according to Callahan, “will be one of the highest-profile charter yachts afloat.” With brand DNA like this, projects of such remarkable passion are no wonder why Kismet remains a true masterpiece.

technologies such as state-of-the-art aerodynamics and composite structure. The HondaJet is a clean sheet design and the result of years of aeronautical research. Our meticulous attention to detail, design, and engineering offer customers the best performance, efficiency, and comfort in its class. Also, dedication to bettering the industry and to improving the lives of our customers accounts for the HondaJet’s success. HL: Are we seeing a transition from large luxury cabin jets to lighter luxury aircraft? MF: There has been an increase in interest in more efficient business jet travel options. For example, the majority of business jet usage is less than 1,000 nautical miles. If you are traveling with a few passengers, it’s more practical and efficient to use a light jet rather than a large cabin jet. The HondaJet is as high performance and comfortable as a large cabin jet, but is also much more efficient and appealing to not only individual owners but also fleet and charter operators. HL: How has HondaJet Elite’s success translated in the global market? MF: Due to the innovation and technology implemented PHOTOS COURTESY OF HONDA AIRCRAFT COMPANY

on the HondaJet, interest in the aircraft in the Middle East, which is not generally a light jet market, is rapidly increasing. It is a more efficient option, has a sporty look, and is attractive to the region. In Asia, the Honda brand is very strong, which has created a lot of brand recognition across the region. Commitment to innovation and technology are all contributing factors to Asia’s interest for both individual and fleet sales. › › The Middle East and Asia are both new areas of growth for the HondaJet. While sales in the U.S. remain strong, interest in these regions provides us with the opportunity to increase awareness of the benefits of light jets and to expand sales and service of the HondaJet. HL: What would be the key differences between HondaJet Elite buyers and large or mid-sized jet buyers? MF: Buyers in the light-jet market are often owner-operators who are interested in personal and business use; those buying light jets are usually looking for a more efficient way of regional travel, including access to smaller airports. Purchasers of light jets may be looking to lessen their impact on the environment while also enjoying the benefits of private air travel. HL: Are there any technological innovations that you would like to bring to the market? MF: We are always looking for ways to improve personal mobility through technological innovation. Our goal is to continue to create new value in the industry, and we are constantly working on new technologies such as advanced aerodynamics, new structural material, automation and advanced controls. We’re thankful that business aviation users continue to choose HondaJet.

Although Premiere Napa Valley is an exclusive trade auction where a single bottle can cost $1250, for the vintners who produce the wine, the event is a labor of love that celebrates craftsmanship ACCORDING TO ITS WEBSITE, PREMIERE NAPA VALLEY (PNV) IS “THE best week in Napa Valley.” The annual invitation-only trade extravaganza, which is put on by the Napa Valley Vintners (NVV) and takes place February 18-23, 2019, is indeed an experience unlike any other. It’s the unique time of year when the local winemaking community and the global buyers who collect from the region come together to honor the craft. The culmination of the event is Saturday’s barrel tasting and live auction. More than 185 of the valley’s top vintners will pour their best wines—small batches (lots range from 60 to 240 total bottles) of one-of-a18

kind blends explicitly made for PNV. After sampling the wine during the walk-around barrel tasting, restauranteurs, wine shop owners, and collectors bid to purchase their favorite blends. The funds raised from the auction—$4.1 million was fetched at the 22nd annual event in 2018—support NVV’s mission to promote, protect, and enhance the Napa Valley. While the educational, tasting, and networking seminars and parties are something to look forward to, for the winemakers PNV is a showcase that allows them to reconnect with friends, taste wonderful wine, and show their support for each other.

HauteDRINKS CP: Blending is a very creative process. When we were making the blends in December and January, finishing in February of 2018, we realized that there was an

opportunity to use three different sections to create this exclusive barrel. We think it’s extraordinary. It’s something that’s never been done before. When you’re putting it all together you need something genuinely unique. I know close colleagues take a lot of pride in coming up with something that’s not only unique but will never be repeated. There’s a feeling that it’s a one-off thing. It’s never going to be repeated, like a little vintage pop-up. HL: Is getting a high bid something that you think about when blending the wine? AP: If you’re the lowest guy on the bidding roll and if you’re the highest guy on the bidding roll, there’s no difference. You’re still making money for the vintners. It’s a good cause. We’re supporting ourselves. I wish people would look less at the numbers and look more at where the money’s going and how it’s being spent. MB: You know for us, of course, I want to get a high bid. That makes Pine Ridge stand out. But it’s not essential to the process that I’m going through. I’m trying to make the best wine I can.

Michael Beaulac

DC: I don’t really know if there is such a specific style or type of wine that gets the high bids, I’m just trying to showcase what I think is the best. Some people may think, ‘Oh this is amazing, and I want to bid a lot,’ and other people will go, ‘Oh it’s not my cup of tea.’ But I make wine for what I think is best and not for anybody else. HL: What’s the relationship between the vintner and the buyer? AP: My lot last year was bought by a Swiss restaurant, a restaurant in Zurich, that’s called the NapaGrill. Suddenly I have this new Swiss contingent of friends. I’m going to go skiing with them since they’ve so generously invited to send me over there to go skiing. Danielle Cyrot

CP: Half the time or two-thirds of the time as the winemaker you get to meet the buyer, and it establishes a bond. I’ve run into to people that I’ve bottled the Premiere lot for ten years down the road, and they say, ‘Hey, I still have six bottles of that wine.’ You might not have seen them since they bought the wine, but they

Different blends of wine

still feel that connection, so I think it’s intimate because that connection is almost as unique as the wine itself and the creation of this ultra small lot. HL: What can a wine lover learn from PNV’s barrel tasting? AP: Premiere Napa Valley’s is the trades’ first taste of the new vintage. It allows them to see what the quality is from tasting all of the wines in the room. You have almost 200 wines in the same room. That’s going to be a big percentage of what’s being produced in the Napa Valley. So, you really get a good idea of what’s coming out of the different appellations in Napa Valley, from different varieties in Napa Valley.

20

SF_DRINKS_1_4.indd 20

1/5/19 4:24 PM

MB: You get a good idea of what the vintage was like. Because 90%, 95% of the people are doing Cabernet because that’s what we do best here in the valley. ‘17 was a difficult vintage, and I think it will be interesting to taste those wines. It will be everyone’s first opportunity to go around and taste ‘17 vintage Cabernet. DC: It gives you an excellent perspective of the appellation. You learn how growing grapes from these different areas of Napa Valley impacts what you’re tasting in the glass. You can go around and sample the entire Napa Valley all in one day in the same room and see how each of us fares within that particular vintage. That’s pretty unique, you don’t get to do that every day. HL: What do you love most about the Napa Valley winemaking community? CP: I have a whole group of colleagues in the winemaking community that I can call or meet up for lunch or coffee anytime, and they’re very generous with sharing how they do something. It’s not such a huge world when you’re in the world of wine. It’s a tight-knit, small community.

Vineyards during winter

DC: We all go around and give each other high fives and say, ‘Hey that’s an awesome wine. Good job.’ You can say, ‘Wow, that’s an amazing glass of wine!’ or ‘What did she do to make that taste so great up on Howell Mountain?’ or ‘What barrel are you using? How do you get these flavors out of it?’ I always think there’s a fun spirit of good congratulatory work. Good job, we made it, we all did it together. MB: There is a tremendous amount of camaraderie in the valley. For instance, I’m having a barrel tasting next month, and I’ll have 80 people come to it, other winemakers. There’s also a real sense of sharing. Across the street is Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and we share our information back and forth. I needed some equipment earlier, last week, and I called them up and said, ‘Hey can I borrow this?’ The response was ‘Of course you can.’ Everyone is trying to help each other and hoping that we all make better wine. The camaraderie is unbelievable. DC: Yes, we all understand that if we all make great wine we’re gonna help elAaron Pott

evate the Napa Valley appellation and that helps us all. So you know, if I were to borrow a pump from my neighbor I’ve got a couple people I can call and be like, ‘Hey I’m in a pinch can I borrow a pump?’ 99.9% of the time the answer is yes. We’re all in it together to help make great wine. So from my perspective, there’s

Cade’s tasting room

no secrets in winemaking, and I want to share my knowledge, and hopefully, everybody else will do the same so that we can all make a great glass of wine. AP: The closeness of it. I made wine for years in Bordeaux, in France, and it was not a close-knit community. I think this is a real example of when all of the vintners come together to do something for the community. So, I really like the closeness. I think, you know, it was Robert Mondavi that said, “If one person’s doing well, it’s going to raise the tide and bring up all of our boats,” and I think that idea really stuck with people in Napa and it’s a real non-competitive group of people.” Check out the Premiere Napa Valley portfolio and purchase wine online at https://premierenapavalley.com/.

We can have some fun with different menu items.” Another area the Delaroques hope to expand in the new year? Dessert. “I’ve always had a sweet tooth. Andrea and I have been thinking about launching a project that incorporates some of our favorite sweet things. We want to call it Fat Baby Francais, and it will be a sweet endeavor including madeleines, French flan, and ice cream.

EYE FOR DESIGN 8 dealers not to miss at this year’s Fog Fair

ART GALLERY OWNERS, INTERNATIONAL DESIGNERS, AND ACCLAIMED ARTISTS WILL descend on San Francisco January 17-20 for the 6th annual Fog Design+Art Fair. The four-day extravaganza begins with a preview gala on January 16. The weekend-long festivities include artist conversations, an innovators luncheon honoring Pamela J. Joyner, and 53 unique exhibitions. Many of the proceeds, including those for the opening night party, benefit SFMOMA’s programs and departments. For art collectors and design enthusiasts, Fog is a prime time to meet with local and globally recognized curators, artists, and dealers. Attending? Here are eight booths you don’t want to miss.

Gallery: Crown Point Press, San Francisco Director: Valerie Wade Known for: Founded 57 years ago by Kathan Brown, Crown Point is a contemporary printing press that focuses on etching, prints, and plates. Fog exhibit: “We are excited to present a one-person booth at the fair this year—Laura Owens. The presentation includes a selection of prints from Owens first project at the press in 2004 and her second project in 2010. Also on view will be a group of handmade, one of a kind artist books from her studio. Owens is a renowned Los Angeles painter whose mid-career survey has traveled from the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY to its current venue at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. In 2016 Laura Owens installed a major exhibition of new paintings at The Wattis Institute, titled Laura Owens: Ten Paintings, San Francisco.” On SF’s art community: “While San Francisco is not considered a major market center there are a handful of devoted curators and collectors that support the activities of the museums and galleries here and participate in keeping the art scene viable. In my opinion, there is more experimentation here with the PHOTOS COURTESY OF RICHARD MOSSE AND ALTMAN SIEGEL, SAN FRANCISCO; CROWN POINT PRESS, COPYRIGHT LAURA OWENS; SARAH MORRIS, COSIMA VON BONIN, AND PETZEL, NEW YORK; DAVID GILL GALLERY

artists and programming in the galleries since there isn’t such an emphasis on the commercial market.” Laura Owens, “Untitled (LO271),” 2004

Gallery: Altman Seigel, San Francisco Principal: Claudia Altman-Siegel Known for: Altman-Siegel opened her namesake gallery 10 years ago. She features emerging artists, historical exhibitions, and artists whose work speaks to present-day cultural dialogue. Fog exhibit: “This year we are doing a solo booth with photographer Richard Mosse. Richard also has an upcoming solo show at SFMOMA in 2019, and we are excited to introduce his work to the San Francisco audience. Richard has documented the civil war in Congo and also the refugee crisis in Syria and Africa. We will be showing works from both of these series.” On the importance of the fair: “Many people are talking about art having a bigger and bigger online presence, which makes sense. But nothing can substitute the experience of standing in front of the actual object. The physical connection one has with a piece of art cant be replicated in an online context. For this reason, I hope art lovers will continue to visit the gallery and the fair and experience the work in person.” The new McMullen

Gallery: Petzel, New York Principal: Friedrich Petzel Known for: Founded in 1994, this is Petzel’s first appearance at Fog. Petzel develops programs around modern, internationally-renowned artists and leading artists from the past 30 years like Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, and Richard Prince. Fog exhibit: “We will be exhibiting works by Cosima von Bonin (b. 1962, Mombasa, Kenya), Wade Guyton (b. 1972, Hammond, IN), and Sarah Morris (b. 1967, London, UK). We’re showing a group of artists that are both art historically relevant and adventurous. The booth should be appealing to anyone interested in seeing how our artists have navigated the contemporary art landscape with original and exciting ideas.” On the challenges facing dealers today: “Images are being exchanged at a faster rate than they have been in the past. While this allows for a greater amount of diversity in what is being shown it also amounts to saturation in the marketplace. The project of any gallery is to try to convince audiences that they deserve A collection of 19th-century Chinese vases and wallper at Gracie.

Gallery: Modernity, Stockholm Principal: Andrew Duncanson Known for: Specializing in the collection and sale of rare high-end lighting, jewelry, ceramics, glass, and furniture from 20th-century Scandinavian designers, this is Modernity’s first time at Fog. Fog exhibit: “We have tried to select some of the best pieces of vintage Scandinavian design the market has to offer at the moment. Our centerpiece will be the iconic PK54 dining table in steel and Cippolini marble, with the PK9 dining chairs around it. Although sold separately, we believe the set is a match made in heaven. The balance between geometrical lines, curves, warm and cold materials is very typical of Danish master Poul Kjaerholm. Collectors will find it a unique opportunity to enrich their collection with pieces they cannot find locally.” On the challenges facing dealers today: “In our field, sourcing extraordinary pieces of vintage design in good original condition is increasingly difficult. At the same time, this, of course, means that when

Gallery: R & Company, New York Principal: Evan Snyderman with the goal of a closer study and appreciation for 20th and 21st-century design. Fog exhibit: “This year we commissioned several new works from our designers to be featured in the booth. We will be showing new work from Katie Stout and Rogan Gregory who have been increasingly recognized for their boundary-pushing practices. They both create unique works that function as design objects and works of art. We will also feature work by the French interior architect Pierre Yovanovich alongside an important dining table and chairs by the master of Brazilian mid-century design, Joaquim Tenreiro.” On the importance of the fair: “We love the SF collecting community. I find that although the community is smaller than in Miami or NY, the collectors are highly seasoned and sophisticated with some of the most refined tastes in the country. THE

ALCHEMIST OF THE SENSES LEGENDARY WINEMAKER JEAN-CHARLES BOISSET SHARES HIS MAGIC WORLD BY TERESA RODRIGUEZ
• PHOTOS BY ALEX RUBIN & ERIC RYAN ANDERSON

JEAN-CHARLES BOISSET IS AN INTERNATIONAL VINTNER, ENTREPRENEUR, AND RISK-TAKER. A MAN OF ENDLESS curiosity and imagination with piercing blue eyes, he is an alchemist to the senses. For the past few decades, Boisset has been a passionate leader in the world of wine—both in France and the United States—but recently Boisset has set some incredible expectations for himself. Those goals include changing the way people engage in the world through their senses. With the use of scents, textures, games, and even a pendulum, his hot-off-the-presses book, The Alchemy of the Senses (Chronicle 2018), plans to shake up the wine, literary, and design worlds. One of his great dreams was to create a book that illuminated his esoteric views of the world and captured them on paper. This dream is now a reality, and as with everything that Boisset does, it is a stunning masterpiece of poetry in motion. While most coffee table books use words to elucidate their readers, Boisset employs most of the senses in the pages of the book to transport the reader to a new place of understanding. When asked about 2019 he shares that this is the year of the senses. “I want to challenge people to explore each of their five senses as well as discover their sixth sense of intuition and connection.” Along with his epic coffee table book, Boisset is launching an impressive list of other delights that invite one to experience life through the senses. But before we look forward, let us turn back to better understand this charming Frenchman who has dramatically influenced California’s winemaking community.

Boisset was born in Burgundy; he and his older sister Nathalie were raised in and Claudine Boisset, were the children of schoolteachers and in 1961, at the age of 18 began their family journey in the wine world. “The most cherished souvenirs from my childhood are the memories of planting grape vines with my grandparents,” Boisset reminisces. “At five years old, I would be in the fields, holding tight to the twine that would lay the foundation for the rows of grapes. My grandfather would slowly let out the ball of twine, while my grandmother

taking directions from my grandfather, ‘A bit to the left, more to the right, stop!’ Then, the lines were set, batons were staked into the ground to hold the twine, be energized by finding fossils. My grandfather would give me impromptu science lessons about how the ocean once covered this land. Through his stories, I would be transported a million years back in time when the prehistoric fish, plants, and other living creatures existed. We are thankful for all the many life forms that are now buried deep beneath our land that create this rich, nourishing soil where we plant the vines.”

HONORING THE ELEMENTS

Joining his parents and grandparents in the world of wine at such a young age— from the soil to the vines, the cellars to the wines—had a profound impact on Boisset. A sense of place grounded his view of the world. His playground was the open fields, the walled vineyards of Vougeot, and the tiny yet influential River La Vouge. The surrounding terroir was his inspiration; a living classroom where he learned about nature, ethics, values, heritage, history, and most of all, respect. “Our family’s philosophy has always been to abide by the rhythms of nature and follow her lead in the vineyards,” Boisset says. “We are children of Mother Nature and connected to her seasons. Through our experience, we elected to become much closer to the soil, to pay deep attention to it, to follow the lunar calendar, and to listen to nature and make it our guiding principle.” His family used nature to treat nature–a biodynamic approach of composting,

and Boisset completed his French military service and graduate studies, he always remembered that pivotal moment with his grandparents tasting an extraordinary California Chardonnay. Soon he was entrusted to oversee the American Boisset distribution office and relocated to San Francisco. “I landed on the ripe, fertile soil of Napa Valley and the reality exceeded my expectations! Indeed, America allows you to dream. The power of America is this melting pot of religions, colors, and everything else that creates an amazing dynamic. Anything is possible here! I experienced a profound cultural shift. I took advantage of the wonderful gift of freedom and adventure, and I haven’t stopped yet.”
At the time, the Boissets didn’t own any wineries in California. But that was to change soon. In the late 1990s, Boisset purchased his first American winery, Lyeth Estates. This was followed by the Domaine de la Vougeraie, DeLoach Vineyards, and Raymond Vineyards. In 2011, he acquired the winery whose old stones had captured his imagination and whose wine sparked his fantasies—Buena Vista. He has since merged French winemaking techniques with an American spirit of in-

chemical-free remedies, and loving attention to the land that enabled the vine-

novation to create exceptional award-winning wines.

yards to respond—seemingly to reciprocate—and to thrive. This philosophy creates

exceptional wines precisely because it cultivates the grapes’ remarkable ability to express a sense of place or what winemakers call terroir. “What if we could capture the style and hold it in a bottle, with all its heritage and promise?” Boisset wonders. “This is not a dream. This is what we live and experience. It feeds our passion and is the source of our energy.”

He set out to restore and revive Buena Vista in a way that paid homage to the rich history of the region and the winery itself. The Buena Vista of today is one its founder would still recognize. Boisset wanted Buena Vista to be a monument to America and a tribute to the first premium winery in California. It has the

HIS FIRST LOVE AFFAIR

There is no question that 100 years from now lively discussions about Jean-Charles Boisset will fill the air at dinner parties around the globe. But what will be dis-

Boisset’s childhood trip to California was the beginning of his love affair with

TASTE

The sense of taste is the most personal. It is this singularity of experience that gives each person his or her proclivities for flavor. Boisset understands that and proclaims, echoing his favorite philosopher of food–Brillat Savarin–“Tell me what you eat, and I’ll tell you who you are.” As bold as that statement is, the truth that governs it is universal. What does one reach for–a piece of greasy fried chicken or a plate of fresh fruit? Just recently Boisset purchased the Oakville Grocery. Founded in 1881, it is the oldest grocer in California. He plans to incorporate only the finest and freshest products available, and of course, they will be organic, biodynamic, and support the local farmers and winemakers to the fullest extent possible. “I want to showcase the remarkable agricultural abundance this valley and Northern California has to offer. This is a destination that offers the best of the West Coast and has a strong sense of community.” The meaning of food has always been of central importance to him and his family, and they are excited by the new edible adventure ahead.

SMELL

Boisset prides himself on working with only the best, and this is evident in his line of scents that he created with the famed French perfumer Olivia Giacobetti. Much like winemaking, the nose plays an integral roll in the perfect combination for perfume. So, along with the popular line of JCB candles, Boisset has created a new series of fragrances that exemplify his passions. The aromas capture the sensuality of the cellar, white oak, rootstock, and the scent of grapes. Because smell is so connected to emotions, Boisset wanted to ensure that the perfumes were subliminal, ethereal, and elegant. He wanted to capture that scent of a fleeting yet powerfully intimate moment with all of its delicate nuances and memories. Along with the fragrances, Boisset designed the bottle, including a limited-edition crystal bottle made by Baccarat, as well as the perfume box.

TOUCH

The vessel that touches one’s lips when drinking wine is an important part of the tasting experience. Imagine the difference in perception between drinking the 100-point 2015 Surrealist by JCB red wine in a squishy Styrofoam cup versus the crisp edge of a Baccarat glass. Regardless of the magical elixir, the first thing one experiences are the touch of the vessel to one’s mouth—which will inevitably affect the rest of the tasting. Boisset is keenly aware of this, and he has worked with Baccarat to realize his dream and create his line of glassware and decanter, which will launch in the spring of 2019. “Wine is the catalyst for our creativity and our creations. It is thanks to wine that we dream and that we experience the world with the emotion and passion that connects,” he says. “Therefore, it is only natural that we created our ultimate dream glass with Baccarat to experience the wines we produce in the luxury and purity of crystal in a glass with the perfect proportion, weight, and balance with a delicate and refined shape perfect for red and white wines. It is our Passion Collection and the only wine glass you’ll desire to use.”

SOUND

The most engaging of all the senses is sound. Unlike taste, which is only experienced in the mouth, sound is experienced throughout space and with others. Because we can share the experience, music is the perfect conduit to raise vibrations and create a sense of togetherness simultaneously. One of the fascinating effects of music is its ability to create a powerful and mutual connection in a room, such as at a concert or the symphony. Boisset has worked closely with John Legend to create a collection of wines called LVE–Legend Vineyard Exclusive, as well as events that capture this harmonious state of wine and music, and in doing so, they have raised millions for charity. One of the organizations they have supported is Auction Napa Valley, which raises money for children’s education and community health. And, last year with the devastating fires in Sonoma and Napa, Boisset and Legend hosted a private event at Boisset’s home that was offered at the Napa Sonoma relief auction, and the funds went to support North Bay fire relief efforts.

SIGHT

Walking into a dramatic color-saturated space designed by Boisset is a visceral experience. Expect to gasp with amazement and transform into a curious child who wants to touch and play with everything in sight. He has mastered the art of feeding the eyes with beauty and objects of desire. The environments he creates flood guests with an overwhelming sense of opulence and visual stimulation. The best way to experience the many wonderful spaces Boisset has created—including the Red Room at Raymond Vineyards and the JCB Lounge at the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco—is to sit down and rest the body while letting sight devour the endless treats offered in each unique and decadent venue.

SIXTH SENSE

While the rest of us mortals are content with living in the realm of the five senses, Boisset has made it his 2019 mission to explore the sixth sense with clarity and purpose. He does this with the use of a pendulum, which he has also included in The Alchemy of the Senses. “I use my pendulum to channel energy, connect with the unseen forces of the earth and cosmos that guide us through our subconscious. I also use it to confirm my intuitions and seek meaning. Think of the pendulum as an extension of your wisdom—consciously and unconsciously. That powerful connection allows you to assert and affirm the energy of thought and intention. The pendulum can create a true connection between your heart, your mind, your body and a sense of place.”
So, in 2019, perhaps we should take Boisset’s lead and live our lives fully engaged with all our surroundings. Let us honor each sense for its powerful role in helping to shape our perception of reality. Knowing that, just like Boisset, we can harness the force of our senses and create a magnificent new year.

FEVER! AS THE SAN FRANCISCO BALLET GEARS UP TO DEBUT ITS 86TH SEASON, WE LOOK AT THE CONTAGIOUS PASSION THAT FUELS THE COMPANY BY KATIE SWEENEY • PHOTOS BY ERIK TOMASSON & DREW ALTIZER

DIVERSE YET UNIFORM. CONTEMPORARY YET CLASSIC. INNOVATIVE YET CONVENTIONAL. Strenuous yet effortless. Athletic yet delicate. All of these adjectives—essentially a study of juxtaposition— can be used to describe the San Francisco Ballet (SFB). To witness these incredible contrasts all one needs to do is purchase a ticket to the company’s opening night gala and performance. The event, which takes place on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, is a demonstration of dance perfection and a preview of the juxtaposition to come during the ballet’s 86th season. “It is a unique program regarding diversity and also stylistically,” Helgi Tomasson, San Francisco Ballet’s artistic director, says of the evening’s show. “We have half of the program of Justin Peck’s ballets from Unbound with dancers in sneakers and another set of classical etudes. In addition, there will be two world premieres. It’s a program that exemplifies our company.” The company is arguably the leading ballet organization in the United States. Tomasson is known for nurturing dancers from all over the world and for his commitment to accelerating the art toward the future. In 2018, SFB made history with Unbound, a festival of 12 world premieres—new works choreographed especially for the company. “The Unbound festival was an incredible moment that put the creative process of choreography at the limelight which was incredibly inspiring and provided the platform for the whole community to investigate the direction our art form is going,” Tomasson says. “We now have one of the most diverse companies in the world, and I am very proud of the breadth of repertoire that we present as a company, both modern work from leading choreographers of the day and the timeless classics such as Giselle and Nutcracker.” This ethos is reflected in the programming of the 2019 season. It begins with the return of Don Quixote, last performed during the 2015 season, and includes two other story ballets, The Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid. The rest of the programming is an assortment of new and old favorites. Tomasson’s preferred works from Unbound—David Dawson’s Anima Animus, Cathy Marston’s Snowblind, Trey McIntyre’s Your Flesh Shall Be a Great Poem, Christopher Wheeldon’s Bound To, and Arthur Pita’s Björk Ballet—will be danced. Liam Scarlett and Yuri Possokhov are showing world premieres, and Benjamin Millepied’s Ap-

passionata makes its company debut. Tomasson sums up the season like this: “Don Quixote will be very exciting especially for the opportunities for the dancers to be challenged by different roles in the ballet. I’m also excited about John Neumeier [of The Little Mermaid], who is a phenomenal choreographer and storyteller. We have two new creations by Liam [Scarlett] and Yuri [Possokhov], which I can’t wait to see. And last but not the least Sleeping Beauty will be a great testament to what this company is capable of. Much of its choreography may look easy but in fact, demands a high level of technical dexterity that only the greatest companies can provide. It is going to be a phenomenal year.” But before diving into the dance adventures that make up the 2019 repertoire, there is the not-to-be-missed opening night gala. “It is the biggest Dancers at last year’s opening night gala after party: Thamires Chuvas, Angelo Greco, Solomon Golding, Jahna Frantziskonis, Nathaniel Remez

event of the entire season,” Yuan Yuan Tan, SFB’s star principal dancer, says. “It is a big night of celebration and also a night for people to get warmed up for the season.” The theme for this year’s event? This is Passion. According to the ballet’s website, the gala will celebrate “the unbridled artistry and expressiveness of SF Ballet, where passion for dance is transformative. From the breathtaking physicality of dancers to the daring originality of choreographers to the adoration of audiences—this is passion.” Gala chair Claire Stewart Kostic proposed the theme to Tomasson last May. “I started researching about dance. Martha Graham, who was a choreographer and dancer from the last century said ‘Great dancers aren’t great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion for dance.’ It got me thinking about Helgi, and his whole ballet company,” Kostic says. “Helgi’s passionate, and it runs down throughout the whole organization from the dancers to our auxiliary to all our volunteers to the audience. Everyone is very passionate about ballet, and that is why SFB has been so successful.” The gala festivities begin at 5 p.m. with a cocktail reception at City Hall. Dinner follows at 6 p.m. with the performance taking place at 8 p.m. After the show, the black-tie-clad crowd returns to City Hall for the lively afterparty. Kostic is working closely with event stylist J. Riccardo Benavides and McCall’s Catering to plan an exquisite evening that captivates and enchants. “This year is going to be more vibrant colors that exude passion. It’s going to

The crowd at the 2018 after party

be bright fuchsia and reds, burnt oranges, golden, airy—just a lot of passionate colors,” Kostic says hinting at the decor. “Then we have some surprises. I can’t divulge what the menu is, but we’re doing something that we have never done before.” When asked about a favorite memory from a past opening night gala, Kostic recounts a flash mob dance performance. She says gala-goers can anticipate this same sense of wonder and excitement at this year’s event. She’s most looking forward to the after party. “It’s the most fantastic event. Not only the fun and the décor and the magic of it but the dancing. The dancers are phenomenal, and they come to the after party, and they are all on the dance floor,” she says. Mixing and mingling with the dancers—Jennifer Stahl, Angelo Greco, Mathilde Froustey, and Joseph Walsh—is a highlight for guests as are the four DJs, silent disco, band, unlimited alcohol, and food stations including a sushi bar. Whether you come for the show and stay for the party or come for the party and stay for the show, it will be a fabulous and extravagant evening. Ultimately the opening night gala is a celebration of dance, the San Francisco Ballet, and the glittering season to come. As Tan puts it, “I hope that everybody will come and appreciate the beautiful dancing and enjoy the evening.”

DANCER Q&A GET TO KNOW TWO OF THE BALLET’S MOST BEAUTIFUL DANCERS. NAME: Sasha De Sola TITLE: Principal PREFERRED ROLE OF THE 2018 SEASON: Definitely Aurora in “The Sleeping Beauty.” It has been a dream role for me for as long as I can remember. Aurora is such a demanding role in many ways, and I felt so fortunate to have had the opportunity to realize that dream finally. I can’t wait to dive back into it this season! NUMBER OF SHOES USED IN A WEEK: It depends. When I am dancing a classical full-length I can go through as many as seven to 10 pairs per week! But those don’t go to waste after I use them! I save those shoes for other ballets that don’t require the shoe to be quite as structured. I generally re-use them for more contemporary repertoire. FAVORITE STORY BALLET: It’s hard to choose one. Since I was a little girl, I always loved the score and the classicism of “The Sleeping Beauty.” But as I get older, I am drawn to more dramatic works such as “Onegin” or “Romeo and Juliet.” HIGHLIGHT OF UNBOUND: I felt so proud of the entire company for their incredible work on the Unbound festival. I didn’t have a favorite moment. I just felt so fortunate to be surrounded by so many incredible and versatile artists!

NAME: Benjamin Freemantle TITLE: Soloist PREFERRED ROLE OF THE 2018 SEASON: A couple come to mind, but outside of the Unbound festival, I loved getting the chance to perform Jerome Robbins’ “Fancy › Free” as the lead sailor. NUMBER OF SHOES USED IN A WEEK: I typically only wear nude colored shoes, and those don’t last as long because you don’t wear socks with them. Gross. So I usually switch out after a week of use. FAVORITE STORY BALLET: My favorite full-length ballet to watch as well as one I’ve performed would be John Cranko’s “Onegin.” HIGHLIGHT OF UNBOUND: My favorite moments would have to be in Trey McIntyre’s ballet “Your Flesh Shall be a Great Poem.” I get the chance to be alone on stage for almost 10 minutes, and it’s crazy to look out to the audience and realize that it’s just you they are looking at—it’s a surreal experience DANCE MOTTO: My mother passed it down to me during my early years of doing Irish dancing. When I got nervous or wanted to not dance for whatever reason she would pull me aside and Freemantle in Trey McIntyre’s “Your Flesh Shall Be a Great Poem”

say, “F*ck it, have fun.” I say that to myself before I go on stage. .

NO ONE UNDERSTANDS THE UPS AND DOWNS OF LIFE QUITE LIKE JULIE WAINWRIGHT. The 61-year old CEO and founder of The RealReal, a luxury e-commerce consignment boutique, is currently riding a high. Business is booming: By creating an entirely new market—that of lightly worn, used, highend clothing and accessories—her seven-year-old company is disrupting the world of designer fashion as we know it. The pieces are priced at the highest market value rate allowing consignors to make the most bang for their buck. Savvy shoppers use The RealReal as a tool that informs their expensive purchases. “We’ve noticed that the luxury consumer mindset has changed,” Wainwright told Haute Living. “We’re seeing that consumers shopping retail want to know the resale value of designers and items before they make a purchase so that they can make the most when consigning with us.” A smart socialite is more likely to make new purchases—a trendy Gucci velvet handbag or classic Chanel tweed coat—knowing that she can easily resell it on The RealReal and make 80% of the price back. “Our job is to educate the consignor on what brands hold resale value and what does not (which can shift from season-to-season or year-to-year), so they are informed when shopping brands in the primary market,” Wainwright says. “It’s the new luxury life cycle.”

RING IN THE CHINESE NEW YEAR WITH THE SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY’S 19TH ANNUAL CONCERT AND BANQUET BY KATIE SWEENEY

IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT TO ASIA TO CELEBRATE THE CHINESE NEW YEAR, HEAD TO DAVIES SYMPHONY HALL ON FEBRUARY 16, 2019, FOR the next best thing: the San Francisco Symphony’s (SFS) 19th-annual Chinese New Year concert and banquet. The lavish event, second only to the SFS’s opening gala in the fall, transports guests to China through music, food, and festivities. It starts with a vibrant reception at 4 p.m. The concert is promptly an hour later at 5 p.m. and a sit-down dinner for 500 follows at Zellerbach Rehearsal Hall at 7 p.m. Gorretti and Lawrence Lui are the presenting sponsors of the concert and chairs of the dinner. “I love the symphony’s dedication to the Chinese Ameriwhich benefit 100,000 children, students, families, and teachers.” The Chinese New Year celebration, which initially began in 2001, was founded by Janelle Ross. “She wanted to do something for the Chinese community and Chinese New Year is what everybody celebrates in my culture,” Lui explains. “It started out very small in scale, as a tea party before the concert.” Over the years, the event has grown into what it is today: a blowout celebration attended by 2,700 excited symphony enthusiasts. This February’s event is en route to becoming the biggest and best Chinese New Year bash to date. With hundreds of red lanterns, the hall’s decor will be traditional and lavish. “We will have lots of color and activity in the lobby. It is family friendly,” Tatyana Filatova, SFS’s publicist explains. “This year our goal is to make every aspect unforgettable and spectacular. The pre-concert reception is going to have tea and wine bars, Chinese calligraphy stations, and Chinese instruments playing. We’ll have some New Year traditional cookies and treats.”

NOTED AS A CHILD PRODIGY, AMERICAN COMPOSER, PIANIST, AND CONDUCTOR, MICHAEL TILSON THOMAS (MTT) infuses his melodious measure to classical music lovers from around the globe. Born in Los Angeles, California to a Broadway stage producer and history teacher, the family lineage recounts those of great musical talent. Dating back to his great-grandfather, Pincus, among others, the family’s expertise spans from actor and playwright to painter and poet to name a few. Honoring the legend we all know and love, Michael Tilson Thomas will conclude his final season with San Francisco Symphony (SFS) in grand fashion. After 25 glorious years, his tenure has brought world fame and recognition in creating one of the greatest orchestras of artistic reputation. 67

partnership I have had with the members of the Orchestra and for the warm and generous style of music making we have shared with all

of our audiences,” MTT said. “Having been a music director of an orchestra for most of my adult life and as I approach my 75th birthday, I feel this is an appropriate moment to set aside some of my administrative responsibilities and begin a new period of creative possibilities. Fortunately, my new and unique relationship as music director laureate of the San Francisco Symphony will allow me to continue to work with my esteemed colleagues for years to come on projects close to my heart.” With his San Francisco debut at age 29, MTT’s legacy with the SFS began in 1974 conducting Mahler’s Ninth Symphony. This was cemented by his role in becoming the full-time leader of a major American orchestra as the eleventh music director of SFS in 1995. From 1995 to present, MTT has formulated a vast array of groundbreaking promise through a multitude of areas, which brought rank and honor front and center into the classical music scene. These areas include artistic excellence in his ability to bring about his nuance to renowned composer’s work such as Mahler, Schumann, and the like. Through a continued perspective of growth, his passionate com-

class recognition. He brought about an imaginative concert experience through live recordings with multimedia platforms, including Soundbox which started in 2014—the creation of a club like atmosphere to further experience classical music in a new realm. Tilson Thomas has given extreme heart and passion during his directing tenure. His musical curiosity sparks with intensity and vigor as he concludes a beautiful mark on San Francisco’s classical music arena. The milestones and accolades that MTT received during his tenure only further his legendary status. The winner of eleven Grammy Awards, he appears in over 120 recordings and is honored for his collection of compositions, his television debuts for BBC, and media radio series with SFS called The MTT Files. His impactful and grand accomplishments with SFS will leave lasting impressions and rousing memories for all who experienced him in action. While MTT enjoys his 75th year, the baton has been passed, a legend has been named, and his harmonious impression has been stowed in the hearts of all.

ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY, the transposition of classical music in the 21st century has been awarded a new leader. Captivating souls through his powerful and majestic presence, Finnish composer and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen will lead the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) as musical director beginning in 2020. Former music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Salonen currently leads London’s Philharmonic Orchestra as conductor and artistic advisor. Under Salonen’s leadership, crucial breakthroughs in digital installations have allowed followers from around the globe to experience an orchestra through audio and visual projections. Taking the music world by surprise, the announcement of Salonen championing the SFS excites on many fronts. His gallant and infectious spirit consistently drives him to experiment around avenues of technology while deviation from relic has proven to be his forte. 71

Known as one of the most vibrant, acclaimed, and famed artists of our time, Salonen thought San Francisco was a “natural fit” when deciding to make a move to the Bay Area. With innovation spewing from all directions, geographically San Francisco deemed the most intriguing to Salonen. However, Salonen has rather large shoes to fill and succeeding Michael Tilson Thomas will be no easy feat. Directing the SFS for over 23 seasons and leading the industry as the longest-tenured director in any American orchestra, Tilson Thomas will conclude his run with the SFS in fine fashion. The passing of the torch came as a big shock as 60-year-old Salonen previously noted he was not looking for a new conducting opportunity and NPR tweeted about “the surprise move.” As if this couldn’t get any more intriguing, Salonen will be accompanied by a diverse eight-member creative flow of advisors. This list includes a robotics scientist, an Academy Award-nominated composer, new musicians as well as advocates for additional contemporary scores. In an era of increasingly greater classical music following by the younger generation of today, Tilson Thomas and Salonen bring about many commonalities to the stage and their respective philosophies, making the transition seamless yet still neoteric and contemporary. The similarities between Tilson Thomas and Salonen include their mutual interests in bringing access to classical music, the enhance-

ment of the orchestral experience through multimedia and what is called creative staging, and attracting a broader audience to classical music through different media platforms. Tilson Thomas was famed for his PBS television series and multimedia projects from the YouTube Symphony Orchestra to providing K-12 grades classical music in their school’s core curriculum. All of which were designed to make classical music more attainable to people of all ages and musical backgrounds. Through his leadership and inspiration, the succession of directors will continue to grow in spirit, harmony, and zest. Salonen drives home a great contemporary feel and proves successful in his recent dabbles from years past. In 2015, he lectured at Apple’s Distinguished Educator Conference about the use of technology in musical education and it’s importance and ability driving forward. He stated, “It’s not about how big of a budget you have. The Philharmonia Orchestra in London is a great example of how to use technology and music in an inspiring way. Many companies could do the same. I would not be able to live or work without technology. I can work with my iPad and then, for example, save the compositions to Dropbox. This way I can access my music wherever I am in the world.” Salonen has a deep affection for both the new and old—high tech and century-old scores. In fact, it is his love for technology that allows him to preserve and share ancient classical pieces in new ways. This excites the palate when dreaming up what comes next for Salonen. The beauty is in the juxtaposition; the canvas of old versus new and its ability to reinvent with vigor and intensity. As we say goodbye to a wonderful era showcased by the talented Tilson Thomas, we welcome the magnificent revolution in music as Salonen takes center stage. What mark will he put on San Francisco’s classical music scene? Only time will tell.

Stay: The Arrabelle at Vail Square is a charming and sumptuous retreat that looks like it could be out of a storybook. A bronze bear greets guests in the lobby, and there is a relaxed, but refined vibe. Brass chandeliers, stone floors, roaring fireplaces, and furniture with carved wood details give the Arrabelle an old-world elegance. The plush beds are incredibly welcoming after a long day on the slopes—as is the rooftop hot tub and 10,000 squarefoot spa. Arrabelle’s restaurant, Tavern on the Square is located at the bottom of Vail Mountain, and it’s a scene-y spot to apres. Eat: For a memorable fine dining experience, book a reservation at Sweet Basil, the iconic restaurant in Vail Village. Sweet Basil has that je ne sais quoi that can only be found in a restaurant that was ground-breaking when it opened, and forty years later, is just as good. With gentle waves and white sandy beaches, the resort has the best swimming beach in Punta Mita. Book a prime oceanfront room, and you’ll enjoy sweeping unobstructed views of the Pacific. Eat: Mexico isn’t known for being plant-based, but chef Manuel Peruyero is doing his best to change things. At Sea Breeze, Peruyero has created a delicious multi-course vegan tasting menu. shapes of rooms inside that fit the exterior of the BeauxArts building.” The apartment is a series of round rooms. Upon arrival, one walks through a curved gallery into a circular entrance hall. The dots on the floor are meant to resemble cabochons traditionally found on rings—a detail that Skurman and Tucker pulled from the Paris’ Bibliothèque Nationale. “We completely reconfigured the floor plan, creating an elegant flow for living and entertaining, capturing light and views from every window,” Tucker explains. “Inspired by the curves of the building’s two bays, we drew up a circular foyer as a uniquely inviting space and curved hallways connecting the bedroom suites.” The first thing Athena Blackburn, the current owner, did was to paint the walls of the entryway and foyer in cerulean blue with gold accent trim to mimic many of the European chateaux she has visited. Her favorite room is the large round dining room with a circular table, a golddomed ceiling, beautiful chocolate color lacquered walls, mirrored doors, and a chandelier with 24 wax candles. The chandelier can be raised and lowered to light the candles. “As far as I know, we have the only real candle chandelier like this in San Francisco. When you close the doors, you dine in a cozy and intimate setting—although this is a very spacious room.” Blackburn says.

dining room’s parquet flooring to the kitchen’s raised paneled cabinet molding was inspired by French design. “There are exquisite craftsmanship details throughout hand-scraped parquet de Versailles floors, lacquered walls, hand-painted finishes on cabinetry and paneling, antique mantel and light fixtures,” Tucker says. “Coco Chanel’s apartment on the Rue Cambon in Paris was the main source of inspiration for the interior details: beautifully detailed, very well-tailored, and French in feeling—down to the 12-panel Coromandel screen, collectible antiques, French stones, glazed walls, etc.” Adds Skurman, “All the doors are very authentically French design, all the hardware, and the parquet flooring as well, was newly made, but hand scraped white oak to make them look like it had been there for centuries.” The resulting home is very opulent, but also cozy. Hidden closets provide plenty of storage space. The guest bedroom is a suite with a den, full bathroom, and walk-in closet. The television is disguised behind a wall of books. The large kitchen center island is covered in black granite with a massive hood that is reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower. Skurman’s team had to bring the hood in through the window. Also, the black granite island conceals a water purification system underneath. “The kitchen is a dream with the center island, and the chic Chinoiserie touches in limed white oak,” Tucker says. The award-winning master bathroom, designed by Tucker, features a gorgeous bathtub in the middle of a Tonneau-shaped space. “Tonneau means barrel in French, and Cartier makes a Tonneau watch, which is barrel-shaped, with two long curved sides and two short flat ends,” Skurman says. “That bathroom was inspired by a Cartier watch.” Tucker describes it

dressing rooms add to this luxurious space of sensuous serenity.” The powder room used by guests is another lavish space. Decorative Dutch painter Willem Racké expertly painted the room in a faux tortoise-shell pattern. “The jewel box is undoubtedly the powder room–my dream to step inside of a tortoiseshell tea caddy,” Tucker says. The building has recently undergone a $10 million complete restoration. Every aspect of the structure—the roof, walls, decks, doors, balcony railings, etc.—was redone. Luckily, as Olivia Hsu Decker, listing agent and co-owner of Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty, notes the new buyer, “Doesn’t have to live with three years of scaffolding and pay millions in cost!” The future homeowners will get to enjoy the apartment in all its glory. Blackburn hopes that whoever purchases her beloved French-inspired apartment will enjoy it with passion. Skurman says that the apartment is perfect for a Francophile: “Someone who appreciates French architecture. You have all of these incredible shapes which is highly refined French that’s very unusual in the United States. The combination of the shaped rooms and all of the details—the flooring, moldings, paneling, and French windows—combine to transport you to Paris.” The apartment is laid out perfectly for entertaining with rooms flowing from one to the other. Blackburn loved inviting 12 people over for dinner. But it is Tucker who, perhaps, describes it best, “Truly, it is the most enchanting, breathtaking, and utterly delightful apartment in every way.” Learn more at http://www.1001californiafloor3.com or by emailing olivia@sanfranciscofinehomes.com

Find art, design, fashion, and culture at this hot destination IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT MEXICO CITY WAS NAMED THE 2018 DESIGN CAPITAL OF THE WORLD BY THE WORLD DESIGN Organization—the first North American city to hold the title. It is the perfect place for a cultural weekend getaway. I recently spent four days exploring the city and fell in love! The people, neighborhoods, architecture, museums, food and historic blend of old-world European charm and contemporary design make it a unique and exciting destination.

A secret fire pit at the hotel

A view of the inner courtyard

Our hub for the weekend was, of course, the Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City—a perfectly located perch from which to explore the city’s highlights and secret places. The hotel is set around a beautiful and lush inner courtyard. The hacienda-style puts the hectic urban hustle of Mexico’s vibrant capital seemingly on pause. The Four Seasons is situated on the grand boulevard of Paseo de la Reforma, steps from one of the world’s great urban parks, the Bosque de Chapultepec. At twice the size of NY’s Central Park, there’s a zoo, multiple museums, a botanical garden, a recreational lake, monuments to Mexican patriots and international heroes, plenty of photo ops, and even an archaeological site, Montezuma’s Baths. Pay a visit to the street-food stands on Calle Burdeos and Hamburgo just off the hotel entrance. A favorite area to explore for shopping is the trendy La Roma neighborhood that is full of independent designer boutiques, art galleries, cafes, and restaurants. Nearby neighborhoods

One of the absolute highlights of our weekend was a private off-hours tour of The National Museum of Anthropology. Lillian Aviles of Journey Mexico organized our visit–here are some of her suggestions for the perfect getaway: “My favorite museum in the city is the strikingly gorgeous anthropology museum that has an expansive collection of pre-hispanic artifacts. Mexico has a rich and fascinating history of native populations that can be discovered here and Journey Mexico can schedule off-hour visits when the museum is closed to the public at this site, in addition to other sites in the city, such as Templo Mayor in the historical center. A must for art lovers is the Zona Maco art fair that takes place every February. We can access the event before it opens to the public. During the fair, we offer unique insider experiences such as visits to top artist studios, cocktails at private art collectors´ homes, and even pop-up fashion shows. We have crafted a new ‘Emerging Designer’ tour that includes visits to designer

yet move forward with modern techniques, colors, and fabrics. A favorite fashion designer is Carla Fernandez who supports communities in Chiapas, for example, that provide handmade weaving that is applied to shawls, capes, etc.” After a hectic day of exploring, the Four Seasons provided the perfect oasis to relax and wind down. Be sure to have cocktails at Fifty Mils one of the world’s great bars–have the expert mixologist make you their signature drink: Billy the Kid (bourbon, vodka, lemongrass, cinnamon, fire, and wood) and don’t miss their Saturday recovery brunch with live DJ, themed food stations and unlimited champagne to wash it all down! BARRY’S BOOTCAMP PARTNER ADAM SHANE’S DOS AND DONTS OF ACHIEVING 2019 WORKOUT GOALS This January, Barry’s Bootcamp, the boutique fitness studio that specializes in high-intensity interval training, is opening three new locations in the Bay Area. Adam Shane, the managing partner of Barry’s Bay Area, is the man behind the workout magic. He brought the intense running and weight training class to San Francisco four years ago and has helped the community grow into what it is today: a beloved family of inspiring trainers and hard-working clients. With Barry’s coming to the Castro, Palo Alto, and Burlingame in January, it’s the perfect time to hone in on those New Year fitness goals. To ensure that you meet and maintain the best you, Shane’s sharing his tips for how to commit to a workout plan.

DO’S

Do. Drink plenty of water especially in the morning.

Choose room temperature water with a squeeze of Adam Shane At right: Barry’s Bootcamp in the Marina is one of six Barry’s locations throughout the Bay Area

lemon. Room temperature water is good for digestion, detox, and pain relief. Other benefits include increased brain power and energy, promotion of healthy weight management and weight loss, flushing out toxins, improving complexion, maintaining regularity, and boosting the immune system. Do sweat once daily whether through light (walking) or rigorous exercise. Sweating when exercising can produce endorphins which act as natural painkillers. Sweating also helps keep your hair and skin healthy and purifies the skin. Do aim for balance. It’s not just about diet and exercise.

DON’TS Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a workout or veer off your food plan. Guilt and stress can be triggers for more unhealthy habits and will make it harder to sleep. Brush it off—get up to fight another day. Don’t feel guilty; nobody is perfect. Don’t be afraid to splurge on yourself when it comes to your health and wellness. Try the fitness class that may be pricey or purchase that luxe fitness outfit. You may surprise yourself by how much motivation that provides. Don’t be afraid to try. The number one thing I hear from new clients is that they are scared, intimated, or think they can’t do it. After class, they always say they surprised themselves. Don’t let fear get in the way of taking the plunge. The first time for anything is always the hardest, but everyone had a first time. You will feel a sense of accomplishment after.

Achieving a balance of wellness and treating/enjoying yourself will help reduce the stress and pressure of missing a workout or having a meal you may feel guilty about. Do challenge yourself. Go outside of your comfort

yourself in your workouts, the more results you will see and the better you will feel. You never know what you can achieve unless you try. Do grab a workout buddy. There is strength in numbers so hold one another accountable. You’ll find that you are more likely to show up to your workouts when you know someone is waiting for you.
