Publisher’s LETTER WITH THIS ISSUE, I AM EXCITED TO SPONSOR TWO OF MY favorite events for the second year in a row: Festival Napa Valley and the San Francisco Opera Ball. Festival Napa Valley is one of the best—if not the best!—event in the Bay Area. It’s a magnificent marriage of music, art, food, and wine that is supported by the generous community of Napa Valley. I’ve attended the festival for the past eight years, and it gets better and better each summer. At some point during the ten days, while listening to the beautiful music performed by talented young artists in a magical Napa Valley vineyard, I find my eyes filled with tears of joy. Please join me at Festival Napa Valley, July 12-21, and experience performances that will energize and inspire you. In the following pages, we share an exclusive behind the scenes look at the festival. Founder and president Rick Walker explains what it takes to put together the extravagant event. Board member Kathryn Hall discusses why she loves hosting the Arts For All gala—the primary fundraising dinner and auction that sponsors Festival Napa Valley’s education programs and local charities. It’s a pleasure to have Rick and Kathryn on the cover along with philanthropist Maria Manetti Shrem. Maria and her husband Jan Shrem are instrumental in supporting the acclaimed musicians who perform in the Bay Area. In our conversation, she explains why forming relationships with these artists—who appear at Festival Napa Valley and San Francisco Opera—sparks joy. Speaking of opera, we also highlight the upcoming opening of the 97th season of San Francisco Opera—which starts with a bang at the Opera Ball on September 6. Hosted by San Francisco Opera Guild, now in its 80th year, the ball is not only the most glamorous event in the city, it is the main fundraising event for opera community outreach programs. performing arts education and the skills necessary to get through life such as confidence, discipline, and public speaking, by reading our story on page 64. I am an example of the benefits of opera education. Between the ages of 13 and 20, I was a soprano who sang opera arias in school concerts. My music education inspired me to work hard to succeed in the world, and I am proud to be a contributing board member of San Francisco Opera Guild since 1995. I want to welcome our new vice president of business development and sales, Diane Laster, and our new ambassador of travel, wine, and food, Jennifer Boden. Diane came from 26 years of experience at the Wall Street Journal. Jennifer is a wine and travel writer for KRON 4 and ABC10 News. I wish you a most blissful and enjoyable summer and a big toast to a luxury lifestyle with purpose, Olivia

On theWEB AN INSIDE LOOK AT CHASE CENTER, THE NEW WARRIORS STADIUM Although the entire Bay Area was heartbroken when the Golden State Warriors lost the NBA championship, there is a great reason to look forward to next season. This fall their new arena, Chase Center, is set to open in San Francisco’s Mission Bay. With 18,063 seats Chase Center is slightly smaller than Oracle Arena. It’s four months until the first game and 85 percent of season tickets have been sold.

VIRGIN HOTELS NOW BOOKING ROOMS IN SOMA Sir Richard Branson’s latest project is now open for business in San Francisco’s SOMA district. Virgin Hotels San Francisco is the second hotel from the aviation entrepreneur’s lifestyle brand, Virgin Hotels. The 12-story hotel is across the street from the Yerba Buena Gardens and steps away from the recently remodeled Moscone Center. The heartbeat of the hotel is a flashy new restaurant, Commons Club, helmed by chef Adrian Garcia. It’s also home to an exciting rooftop bar, Everdene (pictured above), and a cafe that serves fair trade coffee, Funny Library Coffee Shop.
BEAUTIFUL GORJANA BOUTIQUE NOW OPEN ON FILLMORE The next time you need gifts for the women in your life, head to the new Gorjana store in Pacific Heights. It’s the perfect one-stop shop for pretty trinkets and stylish, delicate jewels. Plus, most pieces can be customized with a monogram or name. The clean and bright boutique has blush wood finishes, brass hardware details, live greenery, and shibori indigo fabrics. The current collection, which includes long chain necklaces, beaded bracelets, and hoop earrings in gold, rose gold, and silver, was inspired by Laguna Beach.
CHE FICO ALIMENTARI IS YOUR NEW DESTINATION FOR SUPERB ITALIAN CUISINE What happens when the team behind the hottest restaurant in San Francisco decides to open an offshoot of its insanely popular and wildly delicious eatery? Naturally, a grand slam is hit out of the park. Such is the case with Che Fico Alimentari, the recently opened little sister restaurant to Che Fico. From partners, David Nayfeld, Angela Pinkerton, and Matt Brewer, Alimentari, is a fantastic new addition to the city’s dining scene and a must-try for any local food lover. MEET THE DERMATOLOGIST SHAKING UP SF’S MEDSPA SCENE When you meet Dr. Caren Campbell, the first thing you notice is her beautiful green eyes. The second thing you observe is her glowing luminescent skin. She’s one of those people that makes you wonder, “What is her secret?” To answer that question, all you have to do is book an appointment at her relatively new namesake practice in downtown San Francisco. An expert in all things skin, Campbell doesn’t consider her business a medspa. Instead, she views it as a new type of modern dermatology office where each patient is given specialized care that caters to their personal needs, whether that be with Botox or melanoma treatments.

PININFARINA BATTISTA Pure. Beautiful. Rare.
THE GORGEOUS PININFARINA BATTISTA WAS UNVEILED AT THE GENEVA INTERNAtional Motor Show in March, and it has continued to make news everywhere it has been shown. Billed as the “World’s First Pure Electric Luxury Hyper GT,” it boasts 1,900HP and almost 1,700 pounds of torque, acceleration of 0-60 in under two seconds and about 280 miles on a charge (your mileage may vary). Posting these numbers sounds like something from a science fiction novel of yesteryear, but in today’s world, they seem almost understandable. No wonder it’s being hailed as the “most powerful road-legal car ever designed and built in Italy.”
gorgeous cars since 1930. (As he was somewhat short of stature, his nickname was “Pinin,” Italian for “short” and, rather than calling his company “Farina,” the name “Pininfarina” apparently had a better ring to it and also helped distinguish it from his brother’s company.) In an homage to its founder, the company named the new car “Battista”. For most of the past nine decades, the brand was content to design and build automobile bodies, but it then branched out to other areas, like trains and buses, yachts and airplanes. However, to the surprise of many, it entered the entirely new world of hypercar creator with the new Battista pictured here, which is the fruition of the company’s announcement in April of 2018 that it was in the process of creating the world’s newest car brand. You may remember
PHOTOS COURTESY AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA
Stepping back a notch, Battista Farina founded the Pininfarina design and coachbuilding company about ninety years ago, and the atelier has proceeded to create the bodies for many

hearing about the car when it was a prototype, called the PFO, which debuted at Pebble Beach in August of last year.. So how do you go about creating a hypercar with these stellar capabilities? An excellent place to start is with the genius bunch at Rimac Automobili, a Croatian company founded by Mr. Mate Rimac a mere ten years ago, as a creator of drivetrains and battery systems, with a plan to create its hypercar, which it also has done. Its Concept One was unveiled in 2011 and fans of The Grand Tour may remember the car for the time when Richard Hammond tried to disprove the laws of physics (seriously, it was a terrible crash, followed by a fire, and he was incredibly fortunate to survive relatively unscathed). Rimac (now partially owned by Porsche) is supplying the Battista’s batteries and drivetrain. Pininfarina has been owned by India’s Mahindra (which, not surprisingly, owns a Formula E racing team) since late 2015 and the presence of a major financial resource has allowed the creation of this incredible machine. With pricing expected to be about $2.5 million, and with only 150 examples to be produced, the company expects that it will be highly sought-after. Deliveries are scheduled for early in 2020. Although I have not yet been able to drive it, I have attended some in-person salons to get a first-hand look and–no surprise, given its heritage–it is gorgeous. There’s nothing short about this beauty.
The Battista is the result of combining beautiful Italian craftsmanship with high-tech electric propulsion.

five-seater air-taxi prototype—the Lilium Jet. The unveiling of the new jet came as it completed its maiden flight in Germany this May. Co-founded in 2015 by Daniel Wiegand (CEO), Sebastian Born, Matthias Meiner and Patrick Nathen, the company has attracted more than $100 million in venture capital from world-class investors. With a top speed of 300 km/h and a range of 300km, Lilium Jet is capable of completing much longer journeys than its competitors thanks, in part, to the fixed-wing design of the aircraft. And here’s the difference: Drone-based aircrafts consume most of their energy to remain in the air. However, Lilium Jet relies only on the lift generated by the fixed wing and requires less than 10 percent of its maximum 2,000 horsepower during flight at cruising speed. According to Lilium, “The Lilium Jet features two fixed wings: one main wing at the rear of the aircraft, which measures about 11m across, and a canard wing at the front of the aircraft, so-called because of its resemblance to a duck. The canard wings each have two flaps, and the main wings have four. We mount three of our pioneering all-electric jet engines on each flap, allowing them to pivot and change the direction of the thrust they create. The flaps can each move independently.” The full-scale, full-weight prototype is powered by 36 all-electric jet engines that allow it to take off and land vertically, while achieving remarkably efficient horizontal, or cruise, flight. No tail; no rudder; no propellers; no gearbox; and only one moving part that contributes to the safety and affordability of the aircraft. The efficiency of the aircraft is comparable to the energy usage of an electric car over the same distance. In addition, Lilium will fly 300km (186.4 miles) in one charge. “We are taking another huge step towards making urban air mobility a reality,” CEO Wiegand says. “In less than two years, we have been able to design, build and successfully fly an aircraft that will serve as our template for mass production. Whether it’s friends or families flying together, or business travelers ride-sharing into the city, having five seats delivers an economy of scale you just can’t achieve with two. The Lilium Jet itself is beautiful, and we were thrilled to see it take to the skies for the first time. With the perfect balance of range and speed, our aircraft has the potential to positively impact the way people choose to live and travel, all over the world.” Having completed extensive ground testing at Lilium’s HQ, the prototype aircraft, which is controlled remotely from the ground, has since begun a rigorous flight test campaign, and lays Project L3: BMT Group the foundations for certification of the aircraft.

WHERE NO SUPERYACHT HAS GONE BEFORE Oceanco and Timur Bozca unveil 105m diesel-electric expedition concept Esquel
LUXURY TRANSPORT DESIGN IS RARELY ABOUT THE VESSEL—JUST ask yacht designer Timur Bozca. For 2015’s Young Designer of the Year, it’s about where the experience takes you. Most noted for highperformance, futurist concepts like the Cauta sailing yacht and Black Swan, Bozca creates yacht concepts that are highly original yet deceptively simple. Unveiled at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show, Esquel—a 105m diesel-electric expedition yacht—is Bozca’s first launched project with Oceanco, and it may be the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Armed with cookbooks from his newfound friends in the kitchen, Trilling honed his skills. He moved his way up in the restaurant industry and found himself cooking across the US, from Nashville to Brooklyn. “I was in New York, and there was a small rumor that chef Keller was going to open a Mexican restaurant,” Trilling says. He thought it would be a fantastic opportunity. “Everyone was talking about it, and then the rumor went away.” As luck would have it, Keller reached out to Susana Trilling asking her for chef recommendations. She mentioned her son, and soon Trilling found himself in phone interviews with Keller. After a series of discussions, he flew to Yountville to give Keller and

BRIX The new dining room at Brix
Although the Kelleher family opened Brix Napa Valley in Yountville 23 years ago, the restaurant recently underwent a major renovation. Shopworks Design Studio is behind the beautiful remodel which moved the bar to the center of the space and refreshed the interiors to be brighter and more inviting. The gorgeous culinary gardens are a huge draw, and now they are a focal point for anyone dining inside or outside on the pretty patio. Chef Cary Delbridge added a dozen scrumptious dishes to the menu. A Dungeness crab fondue with melted leeks, gruyere, and brie is decadent and satisfying. The caramelized sea scallops sit on a fluffy bed of pureed potatoes and are topped with an indulgent truffle vinaigrette. Short ribs are braised with the family’s red wine and piled high on top of creamy polenta. There are also weekly specials, a happy hour with live music, punch bowls, and a shady grove that is dog-friendly.

topography to winemaking techniques and grape varietals. With temperatures varying from one end to the other by 15 degrees, vineyards ranging in elevation from sea level to 2,600 feet, 12 different types of soil, and 34 distinct grape varietals, it is one of the most diverse grape-growing regions in the world. Napa Valley is also a relatively small area: it’s 30 miles long and five miles wide. There are 700 grape growers, more than 1000 different wine brands, and 475 physical wineries. These are staggering numbers for a consumer looking to taste the best wine, but that’s one of the things that makes the valley so exciting. You can visit Napa time and again and always discover something new. Here, Haute Living spotlights seven wineries, some old and some new, that should be on your radar right now. Book an experience at any of these places, and you won’t be disappointed. No matter where you go, you’ll find a passion for making great wine, a sense of community, and extreme respect for the land.

1881 NAPA If there is anyone who can put together a new wine brand in less than six months, it’s Jean-Charles Boisset. The French winemaker, who is practically a magician, oversees 25 historical and prestigious wineries all over the world, including Raymond Vineyards in Napa. It is here where Boisset’s team makes the wine for 1881 which includes 12 distinct Cabernet Sauvignons, a red blend, Merlot, and rosé. Each of the Cabernet Sauvignons is made with grapes from 12 of Napa’s sub AVAs (American Viticultural Area) like Atlas Peak, Spring Mountain, and Stag’s Leap. EXPERIENCE: 1881 Napa’s tasting room is the nation’s first and only wine history museum. The beautifully remodeled two-story Victorian dates back to 1881 and now houses Boisset’s collection of vintage winemaking tools and artifacts (manual pumps, pruners, soil injectors, old bottles, etc.) explicitly related to the valley’s history. There is also a fantastic map on the ceiling and extensive information about the essential players who helped establish Napa as a winemaking region, and details on the different sub AVAs. Be sure to allot time to explore the museum and the tasting. Majestic Mountains vs. Plush Valleys is a flight of four wines, from four AVAs, two on the valley floor and two on mountains. This exploration of the area’s topography provides a winemaker’s insight into the importance of vineyard placement. Bryant Estate
Bettina Bryant
BRYANT ESTATE One of Napa’s cult producers, Bryant Estate is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its first release, Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Bryant is known for its commitment to environmentally friendly practices and meticulous process: all of the grapes are handpicked, blended, and produced on site. Winemaker Kathryn “KK” Carothers walks the vines daily and uses a minimalist approach that allows the grapes to thrive. The bottling, labeling, and packaging are also by hand and the wines, which have a lengthy waiting list, are sold directly to the consumer. Experience: As the northernmost property on Pritchard Hill, Bryant has stunning views of the vineyard-lined valley floor and Lake Hennessey. Private appointments are necessary to taste the current releases, the 2016 Bryant Family Vineyard Cab, 2016 Bettina, and What to take home: Although none of the wines are sold at the winery and there is a waitlist to purchase bottles, the Bettina label is worth the wait. A sophisticated and lush blend of four Bordeaux varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, it’s a lovely and highly drinkable red. Insider info: Bryant’s owners Don and Bettina Bryant are colossal art collectors and philanthropists who generously donate their wine and time to support local causes. Bettina was the co-chair of Inspire Napa Valley, a recent weekend-long exclusive wine event that benefited the Alzheimer’s Association. DOMAINE CHANDON In 1973, French Champagne house Moët et Chandon brought property just outside of Yountville and along with John Wright set up Chandon as the first French-owned sparkling wine house in the United States. Today, the ties to France continue through winemaker Pauline Lhote, a young woman who grew up in the Champagne region of France. She has a keen understanding of all things bubbly and makes sure consistency runs across Chandon’s labels from the newly launched aluminum minis to the high-end Étoile. Experience: Grab your girlfriends and plan on spending an afternoon at Chandon’s gorgeous estate. Options range from a private cabana for a minimum of eight guests—this includes half a bottle of sparkling wine per person plus fruit basket, cheese and charcuterie boards, hummus and vegetables. Or book a picnic in their vineyards and enjoy a basket filled with delicious sandwiches, charcuterie, local cheese, seasonal berries, and popcorn—plus bottles of the limited-edition aluminum minis. What to take home: The Étoile label is only available at the vineyard, so stock up on the Tête de Cuvée, 2008, and the Étoile Rosé—two stellar bottles that are intense, fresh, and vibrant. Insider info: Domaine Chandon was one of the first wineries to launch a wine club, a practice that is ubiquitous in the valley these days. Fun fact: The outside of the hospitality center and winemaking facilities were meant to resemble wine barrels. The 411: Chandon is at 1 California Drive, a quick walk or bike ride from downtown Yountville. To participate in a daily tasting (which start at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.) no appointment is needed for groups of less than 10 people. For a more exclusive experience like the ones described above, a reservation is required. Winemaker Pauline Lhote

ITALICS WINEGROWERS Italics Winegrowers is a three-year-old wine brand from the Martin family, Texans who made their fortunes growing ruby red grapefruit. As farmers and huge fans of Napa Cabs, they wanted to try growing grapes and found the perfect property in Coombsville, Napa’s newest sub-AVA and arguably the hottest region in the valley right now. Italics has two wine brands: its namesake line and Appellations, a label that focuses on highlighting the best of Napa’s 16 sub AVAs. Experience: Italics offers three tasting options, and all include a tour of their state-of-the-art recently completed caves. However, the VIP tasting includes small bites, and the picnic tasting consists of a picnic. On a hot day, enjoy the VIP tasting in the cool caves—the VIP room showcases the different types of soil in Coomsbville and has an eye-catching metal chainlink chandelier by Baylar Atelier for Hudson Furniture.

What to take home: The 2018 Italics Chardonnay is perfect for sipping on a warm summer afternoon; the incredible 2015 Italics Estate Cabernet Sauvignon could be mistaken for a cult Oakville red, but it’s not and is just as good— at a fraction of the price. This is an impressive wine.

WINEMAKER SPOTLIGHT Italics Winegrowers’ winemaker Marbue Marke, who used to teach sensory science at Napa Valley College, shares insights on his experience below. On his winemaking style: “I’m super technically sound. That means my style is based on sound scientific research and good fundamental evidence. Most winemakers are like painters, but I’m much more of a sculptor.” On Coombsville: “I’ve been making wine here for 12 years, so I know the terroir pretty well. I can not only speak technically, I can speak specifically to what’s going on at each vineyard.” On what he hopes to do at Italics: “The estate has to be fully reflective of the location, and the processes of it need to be fully reflective of that, from grape to bottle. And that needs to match the heritage of the family. I think that’s what A lounge area in Italics’ cellar

FAR NIENTE In 1979 Gil and Beth Nickel purchased an abandoned winery in the heart of Oakville. The limited production ensures that only the highest Far Niente
quality wine is released. Over the years, Far Niente has established itself as a pioneering leader of well-balanced graceful Chardonnay and structured complex Cabernet Sauvignon.

QUINTESSA Chilean vintner Agustin Huneeus has spent his entire life working in the wine industry. After overseeing a wide range of brands, in the early 1990s, he pursued his dream of producing a single wine that quintessentially represents the specific time, place, and people behind it. Thus, Quintessa was born. Located in the northeastern corner of the Rutherford AVA on the Silverado Trail, Quintessa sits on 280 acres of diverse land that includes a valley, lake, river, and four microclimates. Each year a red blend of Quintessa’s vines, which consist of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere, is made. It illustrates the unique voice of the distinct estate. Experience: There are two tasting experiences at Quintessa, and both provide guests with a private host, tour of the vineyard and winemaking facility, and a taste of the current release. The more elevated tasting involves barrel samples and sips of more than one Quintessa vintage. What to take home: The current release, which is the provocative, earthy, and fruit forward 2016 Quintessa. Insider info: Huneeus owns several other wonderful wineries, and if you’re kind to the host, you might be able to taste Illumination Sauvignon Blanc, Flowers Rosé, or Faust Cabernet Sauvignon. Fun fact: Quintessa is one of the wineries that Amy Poehler and her comedian friends visit in the Netflix film, Wine Country. STEWART CELLARS Although Stewart Cellars released its first vintage in 2003, it didn’t open a tasting room until three years ago. Ken Fulk designed the stunning stone building and its adjacent library. It’s located conveniently in Yountville, making it an ideal place to taste when you don’t have time to head out into the countryside. Plus, the family-owned and operated winery produces an assortment of varietals, from rosé and Chardonnay to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, so there is something for everyone. Experience: There are two tasting hall and courtyard experiences, both flights of four current releases, and no reservations are necessary. For the more luxe experience in the private library, reservations are required, but you get to taste six single-vineyard wines from each of Andy Beckstoffer’s famed heritage vineyards. WINEMAKER SPOTLIGHT Stewart Cellars winemaker Blair Guthrie, who is a New Zealand native, shares his insight on Millennials vs. Boomers, Sonoma vs. Napa, and more. Why he doesn’t make only one wine: “It’s boring from a business point of

view. I don’t want to stick with one demographic; I want to make all these different wines for all these different people; it’s way more fun.” On what Millennials drink vs. what Boomers drink: “You can’t just have delicious wine for Millennials. You have to have good marketing and a good experience. For Boomers, they didn’t care about any of the background noise. Stewart Cellars’s tasting room
All they care about is the wine.” On Sonoma vs. Napa: “The wine itself is in the same grade, but in Sonoma, they have more leeway to be creative. When you go to Napa, you want Napa Cab. In Sonoma, there are not these ties to a certain varietal, but every single tasting room in Napa has Napa Cab. If you don’t sell Napa Cab, you are going to struggle. But if you go to Sonoma, you could put anything in your tasting room. They don’t have these false rules placed on them.” On learning from Napa’s great vintners: “I like to talk to as many people as possible and get as many ideas as I can off as many people and decide from there. I don’t believe that one person can have all the right answers, especially in the wine industry. Because if you only talk to one person, they are only going to give you one direction. You are never going to have scouted the other avenues.” On what’s next: “I would love to do a sparkling wine.”

to be reckoned with. In black and silver with tiny diamonds and intricate detailing, her pieces are timeless, yet edgy. Classic symbols—moons, stars, feathers, and evil eyes—are featured prominently. Chunky chains, heavy pendants, and hammered gold juxtapose delicate drop lariats and emblems of love. Saatci doesn’t design a new collection each season, but rather when inspiration strikes. “Sometimes I have new items once a month,” she says. “Sometimes I have something new every three months, but I always make sure there is something new to look at.” For spring, she added pretty butterfly pendants and floral motifs. She’s on top of the trends and predicts that charm necklaces will be the next big thing. Women love to personalize jewelry and Saatci makes 30 different charms, including letters, that one can mix and match according to their heart’s desire. Saatci encourages her friends to layer her pieces and mix metals—gold with black, silver, white gold, and rose gold. When asked where she finds inspiration, Saatci pauses worrying that she will sound cliché before

When I see a woman looking beautiful, I envision how she would look in one of my pieces.” In a way, Saatci is describing herself. Browse her Instagram, and you’ll find glamorous shot after glamorous shot— all of Saatci dressed to the nines, decked out in wildly chic jewels, posing in exotic locales. Saatci understands her customer because she is her customer and ultimately, the pieces she creates are for herself and feed her passion for creating beauty. While her designs can be found online or at boutiques like Wilkes Bashford, Saatci continues to support the community by selling at local markets that benefit her daughter’s school and other causes she champions. Like most working moms, Saatci hopes running her own company inspires her daughter. “It’s important to me that she sees that I started this business from nowhere, and I’m doing it by myself,” she says. As more people scoop up her stunning jewels, Dilara is making her daughter proud. “A client will be wearing one of my pieces, and then somebody will come up to her and say, ‘Is this a Dilara?’ People knowing my designs? That makes me the happiest. That is a huge deal to me that my name is starting to get recognizable, even if it’s only in San Francisco and is still a small brand. But that

GET TO KNOW SEAL The singer who says he never gets tired of singing ‘Kiss From a Rose’— ”Every single time is a new experience”—shares what he’s up to, the most thrilling performance of his life, and more. What inspires him: “Life, in all its forms.” The most exciting performance of his life: “Singing ‘My Girl’ to President Obama and The First Lady at The White House.” What he does when he’s not singing: “I am an avid tennis player. I play daily, or I run or ride bikes. I’m very active. I meditate daily. I love photography, so I carry my cameras with me at all times.” On giving back: “I do work with nonprofits—I have been working with Vista Del Mar Foster Care more recently. Coming from the system myself, it’s been important work to me.” One thing people don’t know about him: “I starred as an extra for a movie in Thailand when I was 26—I couldn’t even tell you what the name of the movie was!” The best advice he’s ever been given: “Any time I felt my heart closing, just sing.” What His greatest extravagance: “Probably clothes from my favorite designer—Carol Christian Poell.”

FROM ITALIAN FASHION MARKETER TO INTERNATIONAL PHILANTHROPIC FORCE, THE ARTS AND MUSIC PATRON GIVES US A GLIMPSE OF HER DRAMATIC LIFE BY OLIVIA HSU DECKER
IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA’S PHILANTHROPIC ART CIRCLES, THERE IS NO ONE QUITE AS prolific as Maria Manetti Shrem. If you have been to San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony, or Festival Napa Valley in the past 20 years, you’ve benefited from the generosity of Maria Manetti Shrem and her husband, Jan Shrem. This couple is so committed to the arts that in addition to funding artists in music, they also funded the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis. The university museum boasts a stellar collection of old master prints, East Asian art and ceramics, and many other works of art. A native of Florence Italy, Maria Manetti Shrem’s life is worthy of an Italian opera and a best-selling book! During the 1960s, Maria and her first husband, a Puglia-born and American naturalized citizen named Edward De George, created a fashion company in Florence. She worked nonstop, spending 18 hours a day establishing their brand as the first-and-only platform that brought Italian fashion to the forefront of international attention. Thanks to her tireless work, Maria Manetti Shrem and Edward De George became the leading exporter of Italian fashion in that era. Although Edward De George opened her eyes to the worlds of fashion, art, opera, and a leisurely aristocratic lifestyle in their Tuscan home, Maria Manetti Shrem ended up divorcing him in the early 1970s for the love of her life, her second husband, Stephen Farrow. She took a leap of faith in pursuit of love and happiness, moved to San Francisco and started a new life from scratch. 49

In 2010, through an SFMOMA fundraising event at Villa Mille Rose, Maria Manetti Shrem reconnected with the owner of the refined winery Clos Pegase, Jan Shrem. The luncheon sparked their love affair, leading to their marriage in 2012 and the partnership of their philanthropic endeavors. In 2013, Jan sold Clos Pegase to better fund their support for the arts, music, education, and healthcare. Maria Manetti Shrem and Jan Shrem provide significant donations for opera artists through four vital funds. The Great Interpreters of Italian Opera Fund supports many classic works of the Italian repertoire including performances from San Francisco Opera’s 2018 season, Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci and Tosca. The Conductors Fund supports renowned Italian conductors. The Emerging Stars Fund helps opera’s most promising new talents. The Luminaries Concert Fund ensures that legendary artists return to San Francisco Opera for individual performances such as the Placido Domingo concert in 2018 and 2019. The Shrems also underwrite guest artists for the San Francisco Symphony and Festival Napa Valley and are proud supporters of KQED Public Radio. Recently, they contributed a major philanthropic investment for the Emergency Department and the Cardiology Fellowships at the California Pacific Medical Center, which treats more cardiology patients than any other hospital in San Francisco. This visionary partnership will significantly expand a highly regarded program that provides young cardiologists with elite training. I met Maria Manetti Shrem in 1995 when she attended a private luncheon I organized for Sophia Loren and her late husband, Carlo Ponti, at the Belvedere home of renowned venture capitalist Tom Perkins. I have followed Maria Manetti Shrem’s life path and can confidently say that she is an adventurer, dreamer, pioneer, and visionary who is always armed with resiliency, passion, generosity, and determination. It is with great pleasure that I share Maria Manetti Shrem’s story here.

Maria Manetti Shrem: Opera has been one of my greatest passions since I was 13 years old in Florence, Italy. In 1974, I saw Madame Butterfly at the San Francisco Opera starring Renata Scotto. We had an emotional backstage meeting. Renata was so far from home and was grateful to be able to speak Italian with me, and we both cried. I began to understand the challenging life of opera artists. Since the late 1980s, I have been motivated to do what I can to welcome artists when they

COVER STORY are working in San Francisco. The artists dedicate their lives for our pleasure, and their artistry elevates our lives. OHD: What inspires you to be so enthusiastically hard working and to support the artists generously? MMS: It is immensely satisfying for us to support San Francisco Opera and its artists. We appreciate the benefit of our philanthropy here and now as we enjoy these young, exciting artists and become their friends. We give them camaraderie, confidence, and support and are so proud of their blooming talents. We hope others will join us in contributing to these funds and friendships. OHD: You and Jan support Festival Napa Valley. Which artists have you sponsored in recent years? MMS: The 2019 Manetti Shrem Vocal Arts Series performers include opening night opera stars Joyce El-Khoury, Fraesco Demuro and Lucas Meachem; Broadway legend Patti LuPone; gala headliner Seal; Canadian soprano Andriana Chuchman; Postmodern Jukebox star Robyn Adele Anderson; and the iSing Silicon Valley Girls Choir. Last year, we had Michael Fabiano, Nadine Sierra and Grupo Compay Segundo from Cuba. We are so proud Nadine will be performing Romeo & Juliet at San Francisco Opera’s opening of the 201920 season in September. OHD: What inspired you to build the art museum at UC Davis? MMS: In 2011, Jan and I supported the dream of our beloved friend and fellow philanthropist, Margrit Mondavi, and invested the first $10 million towards the realization of the museum, which cost $30M. We took on the very ambitious project of creating a museum of contemporary art at UC Davis, on a plot of land that had remained vacant for twenty-two years, right next to the Robert & Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. I was able to inspire other philanthropists and friends from all over the world to make donations in support of the museum and was also able to involve high caliber sponsors such as Gagosian Gallery, Sotheby’s and Bulgari. Since the opening in November 2016, the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art has become a concrete reality, encouraging new generations of experimenters to come to UC Davis, with an audience of contemporary art lovers, families, kids, and more than 80,000 visitors every year since the museum opened. The temple of contemporary art welcomes all without an admission fee. Thirty percent of the space is dedicated to education and it is home to approximately 5,000 works of art created by the University of California’s legendary artist-teachers close friend and amazingly talented California artist, Wayne Thiebaud, said he never thought he would witness a museum being built where he started teaching in the 1960s, and he never imagined his work would be on display at the Maria and Jan at the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis

OHD: Congratulations on receiving the Star of Italy medal last January! What did it feel like to be so highly recognized by your home country? MMS: I was given the title of “Grande Ufficiale dell’ Ordine della Stella d’Italia” (Grand Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy), approved by Italy’s President, Sergio Mattarella, after the proposal formulated by Italy’s Ambassador in Washington DC, Armando Varricchio, with the Consul General in San Francisco, Lorenzo Ortona. It was a great honor of recognition by my home country for my support of Made in Italy and of American and Italian artists and bridging the two cultures. OHD: What particular personality characteristic has made you successful? MMS: Consul General Lorenzo Ortona’s wife, Sheila Pierce Ortona, at the museum opening gala dinner described me, saying, “Maria has an extraorMaria Manetti Shrem, Denise Hale, and Sloan Barnett at a CPMC event earlier this year

dinary combination of American entrepreneurial spirit and Italian charm.” I think this is me in a nutshell. I put enthusiasm, passion, integrity, love, and hard work into everything I do. OHD: You have hosted and attended countless events. Could you share some favorite memories? MMS: On April 3, 2017, I was with my special friend, Prince Charles of Wales. He was honored, with me standing on his right, with the “Renaissance Man of the Year” award from the Foundation Palazzo Strozzi USA. During the ceremony, Andrea Bocelli sang for British and Italian nobles and aristocrats. Last year, when I received the Order of the Star of Italy medal, Prince Charles sent me a congratulatory message. Also, the “Legacy Dinner” at the 2016 opening of the Manetti Shrem Museum at UC Davis is now the gold standard for special events across university campuses. It was extraordinary and received the “Gold Award” of special events. These were all memorable experiences among many in my life. OHD: What made you decide to leave your beautiful life in Italy? MMS: I preferred the uncertainty of happiness to the certainty of unhappiness. From the ritual of the Italian Sunday with all family gathering at the table, in exchange for the waves of destiny to feeling alive and free to dare to embrace love and realization of my dream! OHD: What is your advice to people who would like to be like you and Jan?

MMS: We believe there are three great moments in life: the first is the basic one for education and learning; the second is the one for very hard work and tireless execution; the third one, which we are experiencing now, is the time for giving back what we have been able to earn after a lifetime of sacrifices. OHD: How would you like your legacy to be remembered? MMS: Jan and I started from scratch in a new world when we moved to the United States. Education was our salvation, and art is our greatest joy. We successfully achieved our American dreams, and we would like to leave our legacy behind to inspire others to achieve their goals. Special thanks to Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem’s biographer, Mauro Aprile Zanetti, for his assistance with this article.

In the New York Times bestseller, Hall expands on how she marries the three components: “I do love what I do. I love telling stories about wine. This gives another opportunity to tell more stories and reach a broader audience. That marriage is unique to our industry. We do regard ourselves as artists. Making wine is an art. There is this human element of creativity that comes to the product that is at the core of what we do that bleeds out into everything.” As art collectors themselves, Kathryn and Craig Hall regard art as an integral value “that is at the core of everything we do.” This passion for art naturally paved the way for Hall’s involvement as a founding board member of Festival Napa Valley. ROOTS Planting the of Peace
HOW A MARIN MOTHER’S DREAM BECAME A HARVEST OF HOPE BY MARIA CASTELLUCCI • PHOTOS BY DREW ALTIZER
“A tree was planted on a former minefield; The trunk grew strong, as there was hope for a yield. Branches became heavy with bouquets of fruit; And, thousands of farmers began to follow suit. Millions of trees are now planted on former war-torn land; Children are educated, as their family livelihoods expand. Farmers now sit beneath the shade of the tree; Roots of Peace planted a future for all to taste and see.” IT’S ASTONISHING THAT PHILANTHROPIST HEIDI KUHN’S LIFE WORK CAN BE SUMMED UP IN AN eight-line poem—and yet, there it is in her own words. As the founder of Roots for Peace, Kuhn is responsible for changing the lives of over one million farmers. “I started Roots of Peace in 1997 with one goal in mind: to eradicate scourge and replace it with bountiful harvests that can grow and sustain local communities with new sources of income and food,” Kuhn says. “Through the eyes of children, I have been inspired to take footsteps for peace to eradicate landmines from the face of the earth. No child deserves to kick a soccer ball out of bounds and lose a limb or a life. As global citizens, we must dig deeper for peace.” Roots of Peace is devoted to demining land from the aftermath of war in countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam and replacing those landmines with agriculture—grapevines, fruit trees and the like. Roots of Peace provides a valued compressive approach to cleansing the land, training farmers, bonding supply chains, and locating suitable

T’S COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT FUNDING FOR ARTS EDUCATION IN AMERICAN schools is foundering. However, if Jane Mudge and Elizabeth Birka-White have their way, schools in the Bay Area will continue to teach crucial arts programming thanks to outreach by San Francisco Opera. As the co-chairs of the upcoming Opera Ball, and members of the Opera Guild, Mudge and Birka-White are responsible for ensuring that the event is sold out. The majority of ticket sales benefit the opera’s most important cause, arts education. “It’s a fabulous party for the opening of the opera,” Mudge recently told Haute Living from the elegant sitting room at the Town and Country Club, the oldest women’s club in the nation, which overlooks Union Square. “But we are raising money for the education program. The opera has designated education programs that are in K through 12 schools. Some programs have been around for several years, but we’re constantly looking at the needs of the community.”

If you see them mingling at the event, say hello. “Take the time to get to know us,” Mudge says. “I think people may have one idea of what opera is and who the guild is, but I think if you saw the diversity, the faces, the interest, the ages, and our international-ness, you would better understand what we do. Once people realize that arts like opera are approachable and attainable, then they will be interested. A lot of people, once they’ve been to a show, they form a real love. That’s why education programs are so important. We want to make a difference and to impact the future of the community.” Tickets for Opera Ball 2019: The Capulets’ Masked Ball can be purchased at sfopera.com/operaball2019.

F THE EXCITING UPCOMING 97TH SEASON, SAN FRANCISCO OPERA’S GENERAL director Matthew Shilvock says, “The operas of the 2019-20 season will bring us together in a shared exploration of human relationships and the bonds that connect us. Through soaring music and powerful productions, we will experience a brand new The Marriage of Figaro as we launch a very exciting Mozart trilogy, a beautifully evocative new Hansel and Gretel, a stunning production of Billy Budd, a captivating new opera on the visionary Steve Jobs and much more. These are spectacular opportunities for our community to gather together and be part of life-changing moments in the Opera House.” In our exclusive preview of the 2019-20 performances, Matthew Shilvock introduces us to the deep emotional world of opera that captures the intensity and beauty of life. With this season’s eight stunning productions, opera-goers will be inspired by the journeys into passionate love, political intrigue, childhood innocence and the quest for the meaning of life.

BE WELL
At Civana, a new wellness retreat in Arizona, you’ll find inner peace WITH ITS YEAR-ROUND WARM WEATHER, BEAUTIFUL DESERT LANDSCAPE, AND REJUVEnating, luxurious spas, Arizona has long been a destination for wellness escapes. And Civana, a recently opened resort that’s just outside of Phoenix, is the Grand Canyon state’s newest hotspot for rest and relaxation. The property is located on the saguaro-dotted grounds that were once home to the Hohokam tribe. The resort’s goal is to make wellness attainable to all, and its offerings focus on four essential areas: movement, nutrition, healing arts, and discovery. Movement is highlighted at the resort’s fitness center. Here, guests can sign up for a wide variety of classes—anywhere between 10 and 20 unique offerings all at different times of the day. Some are classic fitness routines like boot camp, TRX, and core training, but there are other activities including hiking, mountain biking, pickleball, and stretching. Yogis will be excited by the selection of new-fangled yoga classes, from wall yoga to water yoga to aerial yoga. There are classes dedicated to releasing tension in certain parts of the body like shoulders and hips, plus

oversees the resort’s focus on nutrition, and he excels in the kitchen. Macy is a wellness resort guru—he worked his way up from the bottom to executive chef at Arizona’s famed Miraval. Today he serves super flavorful and fresh breakfast, lunch, and dinner—made with local, seasonal ingredients—at Civana’s main restaurant, Terras. The menus are nourishing, satisfying, and healthy. Macy uses dairy and meat in moderation, and gluten-free options are plentiful. For example, his

At lunch, choose from the soup of the day (a rich vegetable-based puree like carrot cauliflower or zucchini mint), cobb salad with roasted beets, or seared Mahi Mahi tacos. For dinner, the menu is filled with more elegant preparations like buffalo carpaccio, shaved Brussels sprout salad with pumpkin seeds and citrus vinaigrette, and black cod with soba noodles. Macy also has a playful side as seen in his nightly tacos and tequila special which includes three soft tacos filled with either chicken, fish, or steak, and a flight of four types of tequila. Unlike some wellness resorts where there is no alcohol, Terras has a full bar and excellent wine list that features sustainable varietals from small producers. Cafe Meto is open in the morning and is Civana’s go-to spot for coffee, green juice, and smoothies. Although Civana has 176 guest rooms, the property is relatively small and easily navigable, and that’s a good thing. You can wake up at 6:50 a.m. throw on workout clothes and make it to the lobby in time for the moderate desert hike that leaves at 7 a.m. Water stations are plentiful—it’s a resort mission to keep guests well hydrated. The rooms are spacious and cool with Sonoran accents—a textile here, a painting there—comfortable beds, large showers, soaking tubs, and balconies. It’s hard not to feel instantly relaxed when you set foot in the quiet, peaceful spaces. The relaxation continues at Civana’s stunning new 22,000 square-foot state-of-the-art spa. ple treatments. The Hohokams were the first Native American tribe to develop an irrigation system, and this fact inspires the spa’s theme of healing through water. Before entering the spa, guests walk through a medicine wheel and are told to stand in the middle, where two waterfalls and the entryway creates a sound vortex. Here, say an intention out loud. Inside the spa, there are two couples’ treatment rooms, three wet body treatment rooms with Vichy showers, five facial studios, 13 massage rooms, plus a full-service salon and boutique. There’s an indoor aqua vitality circuit where guests are encouraged to move from the dry sauna to the hot tub to the cold plunge. The routine shocks the system and makes one feel alive and invigorated. Outside is a lap pool and upstairs is a lounge where crystals are featured in the decor with a deck that overlooks the beautiful nearby desert-scape. A Sedona red clay wrap is hydrating and calming, while a moisture drench facial conditions the skin. The energy aligning chi massage is 90 minutes of pure bliss that’s meant to balance the nervous system. The spa is truly a healing place where the body, mind, and soul will discover peace—proving that Civana achieves its goal of providing a much-needed escape into wellness.

through vineyards, spend the morning getting a 90-minute facial at the spa, enjoy wine at a variety of tasting rooms, lounge by the pool in the afternoon, and have dinner at The French Laundry—without ever having to get in a car. That hotel is the stunningly remodeled Hotel Villagio. Formerly known as the Villagio Inn & Spa, the resort underwent a multimillion-dollar transformation and recently reopened as a posh oasis in the heart of Yountville. Virtually everything one could want to do in Napa Valley is steps away from this charming yet sophisticated property. When you pull into the resort’s parking lot, the first thing you notice is grape vines directly next to the lobby. The warm and welcoming staff invites you into the chic and contemporary foyer that looks like a modern family room. There’s a fireplace, various types of seating from couches to small round tables with low chairs, and masculine eclectic decor. There is a bar where locals and visitors mingle over drinks at night. A pool table and other games, such as an oversized connect four and beautiful backgammon board, give the room a relaxed vibe. This isn’t a place for important business meetings, but rather a cozy and stylish space for leisurely pursuits.

To get to one of the 112 guest rooms or 22 suites, walk down a rose-lined path with rectangular water fountains. The soothing, bubbling water and lovely landscaping ensure all worries melt away. The polished rooms are an ideal retreat. White walls are juxtaposed by dark wooden floors and sleek furniture including a tan leather couch, knotted rug, fur blanket, and abstract chandelier. The spacious bathrooms feature rain forest showers, deep soaking tubs, his-and-hers sinks, and swirling cool brown and white marble. There is an open closet and fireplace in each room, and the huge king bed beckons with plush white linens, plump pillows, and a textured woven headboard. Although there is 24-hour room service, Hotel Villagio offers a complimentary gourmet breakfast in the lobby every morning. Enjoy English muffins from the

famed Model Bakery, delicious egg dishes from the resort chef, seasonal fruit, smoked salmon, and fresh juices. It’s the perfect way to start a day in wine country. Another perk is the spa, which was also completely remodeled, and features products from British brand, Espa. It boasts seven treatment rooms, five couple’s suites, a steam shower, sauna, hydrotherapy soaking bath, and lots of lounging space—both indoors and outdoors. Indulge in a chakra-balancing body ritual, marine mud wrap, hydrating facial, or aromatic hot stone massage. It’s the ideal place to unwind after a hectic day of traipsing around the region. Hotel Villagio is within walking distance of a variety of tasting rooms including K. Laz Wine Collection, the JCB Tasting Salon, Preist Ranch Wines, and Hill Family Estate, plus restaurants, Ad Hoc, La Calenda, Bouchon, The French Laundry, Redd Wood, and RH. Of course, if you want to head further out into Napa, you can do so—talk to the concierge and set up tastings at some of the hotel’s partner wineries like Cliff Lede Vineyards, Chappellet Winery, Materra Cunat Vineyards, and many more. If you’re looking for a wonderful place to stay in Yountville, you can’t go wrong with this gorgeous, updated hotel.

AN ENTERTAINER’S DREAM This Silverado Trail property exudes wine country chic
AROUND NAPA VALLEY, PARTICULARLY IN THE RUTHERFORD BENCH, THERE’S NO ONE WITH bigger hearts than the Baggetts. Vintners Robin and Michelle Baggett are the generous couple who own Alpha Omega and throughout the year, they graciously open up their winery to countless charity events. This July, they are hosting Festival Napa Valley for the third consecutive year. Robin is vice-chairman of the festival’s executive committee, so it’s only natural that the kind and fun-loving duo would roll out their smokers and throw the barbecue-themed season finale of the 10-day music extravaganza. The Baggetts are such well-known entertainers that they own a separate residence to host exclusive events and high-profile wine club members. Now, this beautiful wine country estate is for sale. The Nantucket-inspired property is situated between St. Helena and Calistoga. “This stunning Cape Codstyle home presents itself perfectly in Napa Valley,” Michelle recently told Haute Living. “Reminiscent of homes on the East Coast, the wrap-around porch takes us back to my native Georgia at my parents’ home where a wrap-around porch is a gathering place with family, friends, and neighbors.”

Therefore, when I heard that this year’s V Foundation Wine Celebration, taking place August 1-4 in Napa Valley, has a canine component, my ears perked up like a pup’s. First, let me tell you about this impressive fundraiser which was founded in 1999 by co-chair Julie Maples and year after year raises staggering amounts of money for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. I vividly remember the first Wine Celebration I attended in 2015 as the editor of Haute Living San Francisco. I sat at the gala dinner and live auction and watched in awe as the funda-need brought in an astounding $7.8 million for pediatric cancer research. Still, I wasn’t prepared for last year, the Wine Celebration’s 20th anniversary, when the fund-a-need accounted for more than $16 million of the $18.1 million garnered for cancer research that weekend. HEAL YOUR HOME (AND YOURSELF)
“Diagnose” your home quickly with Hayward Score
IN THE MARCH/APRIL ISSUE, I FEATURED “BUILDING HOMES THAT HEAL.” THIS was a popular article, and writing it left me wanting to explore more information. Now, we continue that discussion. Funny, how when we begin a journey as if in synchronicity, the journey leads us to some interesting people and places. And so it was, I unexpectedly crossed paths with Bill and Adriana Hayward of Carmel/Monterey. They know firsthand about healing homes or rather the antithesis—homes that make us sick. Bill, a fourth generation lumberman and building scientist (former Industry Entrepreneur of the Year and the first in the U.S. to stock and sell Forest Stewardship Council-certified lumber) and his wife, Adriana, a clinical health psychologist moved into their dream home in Pebble Beach 11 years ago. It all seemed too good to be true until their new baby stopped growing (going from 90th percentile to 9th), and Bill and Adriana both began to get very sick—their symptoms manifesting differently. His as depression and debilitating exhaustion; hers as recurring sinus infections, foggy memory, and persistent congestion.

SFMOMA HOSTS ART BASH FEATURING NEW ANDY WARHOL SHOW Almost 2,200 people descended on SFMOMA on May 22 for a creative and art-filled fiesta called Art Bash. The entire museum was filled with revelers enjoying the exhibits, food, drink, and artinspired activities. There were two not to be missed exhibitions. The first was French artist JR’s The Chronicles of San Francisco. The second exhibit was Andy Warhol—From A to B and Back Again— a comprehensive collection of iconic and lesser-known works from the famed artist. Other highlights? HauteSCENE JCB COMMEMORATES D-DAY AND OPENS NEW NAPA WINE MUSEUM Vintner Jean-Charles Boisset famously said, “Parties should be a magical dreamland for guests where all their senses are awakened and enlightened.” He achieved that and more at two recent events in his brand new tasting room, 1881 Napa. The first event was in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day. June 6, 1944 was one of the most pivotal moments in history, when the American, British, and international free-world troops landed on the beaches of Normandy. They helped liberate France from Nazi Germany’s occupation and laid the foundation for an allied victory in World War II. Boisset, along with other winemakers in France and California produced an exceptional wine, 6-6-44 75th Anniversary of Jean-Charles Boisset’s new label, 1881 Napa

A red FrancoAmerican blend with grapes from Rutherford, St. Helena, the Russian River Valley, Rhone, Languedoc, Beaujolais and Burgundy, the proceeds of this wine will be donated to veterans. “Our grandparents served in the French Resistance and felt a close connection to the American soldiers who came to their aid in their fight for freedom,” Boisset said. “Seventy-five years later, this magical blend gives us another chapter of celebration, commemoration, peace, and commitment to our common culture and values.” The second event on June 24 was the official opening of 1881 Napa, the country’s only wine history museum. Over 250 guests gathered for the ribbon cutting ceremony, including many Napa Valley vintners, State Senator Bill Dodd, and best-selling author of The Wine Bible Karen MacNeil. “Today we are cutting the ribbon on something so important,” said Boisset. “America is the reflection of the people of the past

that crafted this valley. This is your 101 class on the history of California, the pioneers of Napa Valley, the terroir — you can taste history here!” At the party, guests toured the museum and enjoyed food and wines from 1881 Napa as well as other labels from the Boisset Collection, which acquired the Oakville property earlier this year. When Boisset gave me a private tour, I was amazed to see the extensive collection of historic wine relics from Europe and the United States. I also enjoyed learning the background of the 16 sub-appellations in Napa Valley and about the founders and pioneers of those wine regions. The museum is open for complimentary visitation. Tastings are held on the bottom floor surrounded by alcoves with soil samples from the various regions, along with 1881 Napa wines and descriptions of the areas written by MacNeil. Guests can also enjoy pours from a blend of Napa Valley grapes, including a sparkling wine, Sauvignon Blanc, rosé, Chardonnay, red blend, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon—all wines crafted exclusively for 1881 Napa by winemaker Thane Knutson to reflect the diversity of Napa Valley.

HauteSEAT THE DOS AND DON’TS OF WINE-COUNTRY CHIC From “Napa Valley elegant” to “wine-country casual” to “Napa chic” to “al fresco festive,” there are a wide variety of dress codes that pertain to parties in Northern California’s wine country. But what, exactly, does it all mean? To answer that question—and ensure that we’re all dressed perfectly for the vineyard affairs we’ll be attending this summer—Haute Living reached out to Karen Caldwell, the Valley’s very own fashion designer and one of the Bay Area’s most stylish women. Caldwell is the mastermind of a retro-fabulous namesake clothing line that has been worn by everyone from Jennifer Siebel Newsom to Jessica Chastain. She has an impressive collection of vintage jewelry, accessories, and gowns that she often recreates into something modern and magical. Below, Caldwell defines wine country chic.
