Publisher’s LETTER AFTER A LONG RAINY WINTER, WE ARE LOOKING forward to summer vacation and I am pleased to welcome you to our first ever travel issue. I’m a regular traveler; I often take trips to attend real estate conferences and cover events for Haute Living. In the first five months of 2019, I’ve already added a bevy of luxurious locations, from Milan and London to Cabos San Lucus and Vancouver, to my passport pages. I invite you to journey with me through the articles of this magazine. First, stop on our adventure? My old home outside of Paris, Château de Villette. I spent 12 years at this glorious estate and hosted magnificent events for rental clients and guests. I sold the property in 2011 to a wonderful new owner who invited me to revisit Villette after their extensive five-year renovation and redecoration by world-class French designer Jacques Garcia. You will see from our cover story that the chateau is more beautiful and majestic than ever before. Next stop? Istanbul where you’ll discover an old world culture that is both contemporary yet classic. When I visited in 2016, Istanbul reminded me of my beloved hometown, Shanghai, where east meets west and history mingles with the present day. Both are vibrant cosmopolitan cities that overlook beautiful rivers and the sea. If you’re looking to relax on sunny beaches, don’t worry, we’re highlighting some sensational seaside properties, too. The colorful cottages of the Bahamas’ Abaco Club and the glittering coast of Mexico’s Careyes are two places that should be on everyone’s travel bucket list. For those looking to stay closer to home, why not head to Pebble Beach Golf Links which turns 100 this year? The famed course is home to June’s U.S. Open Championship and the anOLIVIA HSU DECKER OWNER/PUBLISHER Olivia@HauteLivingSF.com Keep up with us digitally at www.HauteLiving.com Here you’ll find daily postings of San Francisco Bay Area stories.
nual vintage auto show, the Concours d’Elegance, in August. Our favorite backyard, Napa Valley, has plenty of merriment to offer, too, from BottleRock to Auction Napa Valley at the end of the month and Festival Napa Valley running July 12-21, 2019. Wherever you decide to travel this summer season, I wish you a safe and fun trip. The next time you see me out and about, do share the details of your expedition. We are always looking for the next best place to share with our readers, be it Saint Petersburg or St. Barts! Until then, cheers to a luxury lifestyle with purpose, Olivia Hsu Decker

Lumina has released two half-floor, two-story penthouse homes—each with approximately 5,500 square feet of customizable indoor space and 300 square feet of outdoor space. To help interested buyers realize the potential of the residences, Lumina tapped Jeff Schlarb Design Studio. Schlarb and his team have created several stunningly visual storyboards that highlight three unique floor plans. Green Couch staged and fully furnished one of the penthouses—with pop-up walls and murals by Mexican-American artist, J. Manuel Carmona.

FIORELLA BRINGS ITS SUPERB PIZZA TO POLK STREET Restaurateurs Boris Nemchenok and Brandon Gillis have brought a new location of their beloved Richmond District hot spot, Fiorella, to Polk Street. There is nothing like the upscale Italian eatery in the Nob Hill neighborhood, and its already packed every night of the week. Diners can look forward to the classics that Fiorella is known for: wood-fired pizzas, fresh pasta, delicious salads, and an innovative wine list. Plus the modern, unfussy decor that includes the Instagramable blue and white custom wallpaper that features local luminaries like chef Alice Waters and rapper E-40.
CANOPY ANNOUNCES FINANCIAL DISTRICT OFFICE In less than three years, Canopy has become the hottest co-working space in San Francisco. Canopy opened its first location on Fillmore Street in October of 2016 and followed with a second space last summer in Jackson Square. Now comes the news that the powerhouse team behind the office magic—Yves Behar, Amir Mortazavi, and Steve Mohebi—is opening a third Canopy this June. Canopy Financial District will be on the corner of Kearny and Pine Streets in a five-story, 10,000-square-foot building. Beautiful, thoughtful design is at the core of every Canopy space including the FiDi office, which has a color palette inspired by where the fog meets the sea.
ROCKSALT PILATES OPENS FIRST SF LOCATION If you live in the South Bay, you may be familiar with RockSalt Pilates. However, if you’ve never heard of the boutique fitness studio from Adrian Ramirez, get excited to meet your new favorite pilates studio. RockSalt is a pilates class unlike any other, and it recently opened in Potrero Hill. RockSalt and Ramirez have a cult-like following and for a good reason: it’s an upbeat 50-minute workout set to music that engages the body and mind. At RockSalt’s new studio, there are 12 sleek modern reformers. Like all the RockSalt studios, Potrero Hill offers three different types of pilates: stretch, strength, and sweat. TORY BURCH DEBUTS NEW FLAGSHIP IN UNION SQUARE Tory Burch’s new boutique, on a prominent section of Stockton Street in between Post and Geary, is at a prime destination in Union Square. The gorgeous store offers the entire Tory Burch collection including ready-to-wear, shoes, handbags, accessories, eyewear, jewelry, home goods and fragrance. Everything is beautifully displayed among white and golden pergolas that are draped in green ivy. The decor was inspired by Burch’s home in the West Indies. Textured fabric curtains and printed pillows give the space a lived-in feel that is both homey and chic while custom gold chandeliers add a sophisticated touch of elegance.

CHANGE SEEMS TO COME QUICKER EACH YEAR. THAT’S CERTAINLY true in the automotive world, where a new model used to stay current for several years and then maybe have a facelift or nip-and-tuck to stay au courant. However, many of today’s high-end ateliers have found great success in creating variants on their cars, so the days of knowing the make and model of a car merely by a quick glance have faded into the past. It therefore should come as no surprise that, hot on the heels of the Ferrari Portofino, the 488GTB and the 488 Pista is yet another new V8 Ferrari, the F8 Tributo. And even now, after its recent unveiling at the Geneva International Motor Show, we know two things—it’s gorgeous (no surprise there); and it’s fast (okay, no surprise there, either). The name comes from the fact that the Tributo is an homage to Ferrari’s power plant, “the most-powerful V8 in prancing horse history for a non-special series car.” Translation: about 710 turbo-boosted horsepower with some 567 pounds of twist in a mid-rear engine configuration will make for what Ferrari proclaims (in what likely will be a severe understatement) the “epitome of sportiness and driving pleasure.” Compared to its 488GTB predecessor, the two-seater Tributo has more power, less weight, and better aerodynamics. Did I mention that 0-60 is under three seconds? It takes longer to read that statistic than to achieve it! Watch for the Ferrari V8 Tributo on a street near you, especially if you live in a town where Haute Living is available.

and slimline exteriors make up the requirements for a high-end luxury car. This year, the focus is on renowned brands Jaguar, Aston Martin, Porsche and Rolls-Royce releasing their first hybrids and SUVs. We compiled a list of the top impressive supercars set to rule the roads this summer.
PHOTO COURTESY OF JAGUAR NORTH AMERICA
JAGUAR I-PACE This year seems to be the year for electric SUVs, first with the Audi E-tron and now Jaguar’s I-PACE, the first pure-electric model to come out of the British luxury brand. With two electric motors, the Jaguar I-PACE combines impressive handling with a 234mile range, all-wheel drive and an interior design that reimagines classic Jaguar luxury craftsmanship. An impressive 0-80% charge in 85 minutes and acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds is ambitious for a car of this caliber with only 394 horsepower. The hood scoop and flowing waistline allow the car to slice through the air, while the rear diffuser minimizes drag for optimized range and stability. Equipped with everything you need for everyday life, from generous cargo space to the activity feature, a waterproof wristband that unlocks and locks the car—no need to carry keys when on the run anymore—the I-PACE is a true driver’s car. Starting at $70,000, this eco-friendly head-turner is capable of handling any task you throw at it.
BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT CONVERTIBLE The king of grand tourers, Bentley, blew the roof off its Continental GT to create a hand-crafted masterpiece that is longer, sleeker and sexier than ever. The 6.0 liter Bentley Continental GT Convertible epitomizes the spirit of grand touring with a fabric roof that lowers in 19 seconds flat while traveling at speeds of up to 30 mph. The 8-speed dual clutch transmission makes for smooth, fast gear changes, while the 12-cylinder engine delivers a perfect fusion of power and refinement, capable of accelerating 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds flat. To ensure every journey is a joy, Bentley incorporated a new range of driving technology including active all-wheel drive and driver assistance as well as a wealth of enhanced intuitive digital features including a rotating display and driving modes, which allow you to adjust the car’s performance to suit your journey, with a simple, smooth turn of a dial. At a starting price of $236,100, the new Bentley Continental GT Convertible is the luxury and comfort you seek with all the power you need in a grand tourer.

LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR SVJ COUPÉ While the future of automobiles is unknown, Lamborghini continues to combine cutting-edge technology and superior design to create sports cars that deliver a driving experience like no other. The new Aventador SVJ Coupé is no exception. Fresh off the Nürburgring circuit, which saw a top speed of 6:44, the SVJ is turning heads both on and off the track. Ultra-lightweight materials give rise to enhanced aerodynamic profiles, while the technological look of carbon fiber—featured in the cockpit, doors, seats and console—combined with leather upholstery add a bold touch to the luxurious interior. Its 6.5 liter V12 churns out an impressive 770 horsepower, and with peak torque of 720 Nm, the SVJ is capable of a sprint from standstill to 62 mph in a mere 2.8 seconds, making it one of the most powerful road cars of all time. Costing around $517,770 and with only 900 planned to be built (63 of which will become part of a special edition commemorating Lamborghini’s founding year, 1963), this incomparable machine breaks new dimensions, pushing supercars into the future.
AUDI E-TRON Having made its way to U.S. soil in September 2018, the Audi E-tron is already widely popular for its long-range capability and exhilarating performance with the quattro all-wheel drive. As the company’s first full-production modern electric vehicle, the E-tron adopts everything we love in an Audi, from sleek lines to sculptural LED taillights, but with the added bonus of being ecofriendly and fit for everyday life. The spacious interior has room for up to five passengers as well as generous cargo space and folding seats all packaged in a luxurious interior, complete with cutting-edge technology for an intuitive driving experience. A low center of gravity and torque output from two electric motors positioned on each axle distributes power efficiently for a smooth drive with a top track speed of 124 mph. Starting at $74,800, the E-tron is the first of three battery-electric vehicles Audi plans to debut by 2020. PHOTO COURTESY OF LAMBORGHINI PHOTO COURTESY OF BENTLEY MOTORS

ROLLS-ROYCE CULLINAN In the trend of moving to larger cars, who knew a Rolls-Royce could get any bigger? The Cullinan is extraterrestrial in size and ability as the first allterrain SUV from Rolls-Royce to make luxury off-road travel a reality with the push of a button. A 6.75-liter V12 engine produces 571 horsepower to propel this beast through any terrain, while a self-leveling air suspension proactively adjusts acceleration, steering cues and uses camera intelligence to ensure a Rolls-Royce quality ride. Speaking of Rolls-Royce quality, the Cullinan makes no sacrifices in the luxury department, with a viewing suite in the back that introduces two leather seats and a cocktail table at the press of a button. For passengers, a center console drinks cabinet will keep them satisfied, while the versatile raised and electronic seating offers the best views. In an age where technology rules, the Cullinan features touch-screen theater and picnic tables that fold out and wireless charging to keep you connected everywhere you go. Venture beyond your comfort zone, in ironically uncompromised comfort in the $325,000 (base price) Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Featuring the latest M sport technology, the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine belching out 523 horsepower and 553 pound-per-feet of torque, connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s safe to say BMW knows how to integrate the perfect combination of heritage and bold new experiences to create an icon of design and engineering. Inside, command, comfort and control are effortless with BMW’s new iDrive 7.0 system, allowing you to control by touch, voice or gesture all from the comfort of a multifunctional, heated leather seat. Outside, the signature kidney grille and advanced adaptive LED headlights paired with bold, sleek lines make for an aggressive look deserving of a sports car. Standard integral active steering, adaptive M suspension, and an M sport differential keep the coupe in sync with every move, while standard fixed-caliper M sport brakes ensure a smooth stop. PORSCHE TAYCAN Formerly known as Mission E, Porsche has finally announced the name of its first purely electric car as the Taycan. Translated as “lively young horse,” this four-door sports car is set to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds flat thanks to two permanently synchronous motors belching out 600 horsepower. Widely being called the Porsche of tomorrow, the Taycan is expected to have a range of 300 miles and a charging time of 80% in less than 15 minutes. In terms of build, the sedan adopts a slimline design with a classic flat hood and rear light strip. Inside, the cockpit feels more like a spaceship. The absence of a transmission tunnel and the addition of a curved intuitive driver display that moves with you is just something to look forward to in the future. You will have to wait until its unveiling later this year to get an idea of a price tag and additional features.
ASTON MARTIN DBX
PHOTOS COURTESY OF TK
No list is complete without including Aston Martin’s DBX, especially since this is the luxury brand’s first attempt at cashing in on the SUV market, long ruled by the Land Rover. Since its concept debut at the 2015 Geneva motor show, the DBX is generating buzz for its durability as it undergoes testing in the world’s harshest environments, from the frozen Arctic to scorching deserts in the Middle East, and of course the Nürburgring circuit. The DBX will feature a choice of two engines, a 4.0 liter V8 and a 5.2 liter V12, with rumors it plans to go hybrid at a later date. The DBX, which may get a new name, is set to be unveiled in the last quarter of 2019, and there’s no word on price just yet, but we can only assume that as an Aston Martin, it will be worth it.

advancement and environmental friendliness, but also its promise to deliver value, shrinking a 12-hour flight time from Los Angeles to Shanghai down to just over six hours. Its strategic partnership with Ctrip, the leading travel service provider in China, looks to bring supersonic flight from China to the United States, South Asia and Oceania. With extensive knowledge of the Chinese market, Ctrip will help Boom accelerate its ongoing partnerships in the region. The

collaboration is uniquely positioned to help Boom navigate the Chinese airline industry. Regional aviation powerhouses like Japan Airlines have also signed on for supersonic air travel. Given China’s soft push for global economic dominance vis-à-vis Belt and Road, China’s travel market is the world’s second-largest and one of the fastest-growing.
According to Yoshiharu Ueki, President of Japan Airlines, “We are very proud to be working with
Boom on the advancement of the commercial aviation industry. Through this partnership, we hope to contribute to the future of supersonic travel with the intent of providing more time to our valued passengers while emphasizing flight safety.”
And while Boom’s supersonic airliner is still a few years off (with $141 million in its coffers), it will
surely reverse decades of stagnation and regression in commercial travel. After all, who wants to be hemmed in by something as trivial as speed limits, anyway? Project L3: BMT Group

Unlike most fine dining restaurants that have opened recently, The Vault is not offering a tasting menu. “I think that isn’t necessarily what the people in the downtown market are looking for,” Cole says. “The higher end you get, the more wiggle room people want. We’re targeting the audience of bankers, finance, lawyers, tech and convention, and they need flexibility, so we wanted to make an approachable menu.” A raw bar, seasonal farm-fresh vegetable dishes, and cheeseburger prove there is something for everyone on the menu. Cole has a keen understanding of the market and is confident that The Vault will attract old and new customers. “It’s not about forcing the unique, bizarre, creative onto people,” he says. “It’s about understanding how to do things simply, but refined. Milk chocolate cremeux, honey comb, sheep’s milk, strawberry, and bee pollen
People are looking for that sense of refinement and that touch of luxury.” Having a superb staff is also crucial to the success of any restaurant, and Cole points out that his team is kind,

about us is we can take a restaurant that’s going to be the most fine-dining of anything we’ve done, and we hire the right staff who are going to make you feel warm and welcome, who are not going to have any pretension. We want to get to know you. We want to know your likes, your dislikes. We want to know who you are, why you came to see us. We want to be your friend. That’s why we were successful for the last five years in our neighborhood spots—because we took the time as an entire staff to get to know our clientele. I don’t think it’s any different at The Vault.”

Louis M. Martini’s new wine cellar
To celebrate their 75th anniversary, the Napa Valley Vintners are throwing an auction to remember SEVENTY-SIX YEARS AGO, 56-YEAR OLD VINTNER, LOUIS M. MARTINI WAS CHATTING WITH THREE OF HIS FRIENDS AND FELLOW WINEMAKERS. Martini had immigrated to San Francisco with his father when he was 12 and had spent much of his life growing grapes. His family owned vineyards in both St. Helena and Sonoma, and despite being one of the first wineries to open after Prohibition, Martini was struggling. There was a shortage of labor and bottles and shipping wine east was not easy. Martini and comrades, John Daniel Jr., Charles Forni, and Louis Stralla, discussed starting an association in which they would come together and find solutions to these problems while helping promote the region as a whole. One year later, in 1944, the foursome, along with three other winemakers, Fernande de Latour, Felix Selmina, and Robert Mondavi, formed Napa Valley Vintners (NVV). Today, with 550 members, NVV is the most prominent and essential organization in the local winemaking community. NVV’s mission is simple: to promote, protect, and enhance the place they call home—not just the wineries, but the community including the schools, medical facilities, and everything in between. They do this through several programs, but the most well known is Auction Napa Valley (ANV). This year’s event takes place Wednesday, May 29 through Monday, June 3. It commemorates NVV’s 75th anniversary and promises to be a celebration unlike any other.

ANV features week-long parties and tastings but officially kicks off on Wednesday, May 29 at noon with the opening of the e-auction. Anyone from around the globe can bid on 150 lots of Napa Valley wine and experiences. On Friday, May 31 is the barrel auction. Over 100 lots of wine futures will be available. Guests at the auction can taste from the barrel and bid on their favorite reds. The main event, a bacchanal extravaganza at Meadowood Napa Valley, is on Saturday, June 1. Pop star Katy Perry will kickstart the live auction with a performance of her greatest hits. Then the creme de la creme of wine lovers will bid on 30 unique lots that involve wine, vacations, and luxury experiences. Afterward, guests will enjoy a meal cooked by culinary personality Ayesha Curry. The party that locals look forward to the most is the barrel auction, which in a full circle moment is being hosted at Louis M. Martini winery. Earlier this year, Martini debuted a remodeled facility and tasting room, so many people will be experiencing the new winery for the first time. Howard Backen of Backen, Gillam & Kroeger Architects oversaw the restoration which preserves structural elements from the original 1933 building. “My primary role is to share a barrel of wine with some folks and hope they get excited about it,” Martini’s director of winemaking, Michael Eddy, recently told Haute Living. “I’m not involved a lot in the organization or logistics, but we’re pretty stoked to be hosting it. The opportunity to have a new house and host a bunch of peers that we respect and enjoy being in a community of winemaking with is pretty thrilling for us. To be able to have a place that you’re proud of and also provide a new forum for other people to show their wines is pretty cool.” As chair of the barrel auction, Hugh Davies, the winemaker at Schramsberg Vineyards, is one of the people helping to plan Friday’s event. “I think the title may sound bigger than it is,” Davies told Haute Living. “There’s a team effort that makes this happen.” Since its the 75th anniversary of NVV, the entire event will highlight the best of the region. “For the Friday festival, we wanted to showcase restaurateurs from around Napa Valley,” Davies says. “There are many, and it’s natural
SF_DRINKS_5_8_KS_2.indd 27
for the winemakers to partner with the restaurateurs, so that was the concept. Twenty-five different restaurants will have stations at Martini, each one preparing something different, and we’ve got a pretty delicious menu laid out.” Both vintners look forward to the event because it is a way to spend time with their peers. “I like being part of the fabric of the community. It may sound a little corny, but it’s that sense of camaraderie and being part of the team, that I feel proud of,” Davies explains. “We’re lucky we live in a great place, and we’re all working hard to keep that good community spirit going well into the future.” Having grown up in Napa, Davies has experienced the auction from a young age and understands how important it is to the people of Napa. In the 39 years since NVV began hosting Auction Napa Valley, over $187 million has been raised to support local causes. “It is by far the most significant fundraising effort that we have to help support youth education and healthcare in the Napa Valley,” Davies says. “Over the years, I’ve learned that we can work together as a community to do positive things for other people.” As Davies and the other vintners look toward the future of the valley, there is also tremendous respect for the past. “As I learned the history of Martini, I realized how meaningful it was to be connected to a story,” Eddy says. “That history lends a different motivation or attitude, and we want to be linked to our history, but we also are looking forward.” Davies looks at it like this: “How could you possibly organize something that would be this beneficial? It starts as a smaller thing, and if people work together on it, and if they work together on it for years, and years, and years, it will snowball and become very impactful. You realize that it’s not just one fell swoop. There’s not this one moment. It’s all of us together, pushing it, that makes it work. Put a group of people together, behind an effort, and with time, very positive things can happen.”

NEW BOUTIQUE CHIC Veronica Beard is bringing its cool-girl clothes to Fillmore Street
VERONICA BEARD, THE CONTEMPORARY WOMENSWEAR BRAND FROM SISTERS-IN-LAW VERONICA MIELE Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard, has always had ties to San Francisco. Swanson Beard grew up here, and since they launched their first collection nine years ago, the duo has hosted regular trunk shows, pop-ups, and events. However, they had yet to set up a stand-alone shop—until now. Local fans of their stylish tailoring and pretty prints will be thrilled to learn that Veronica Beard is finally opening its first boutique in the Bay Area. The new store debuts on Fillmore Street between Sacramento and Clay in early May.

“It’s unbelievable and I’m so proud!” Swanson Beard says excitedly about the upcoming SF location. “We have such a loyal fan base on the West Coast, and opening stores only gives us more information on who our customer is and what she wants. It’s a win/win for all of us!” When deciding what neighborhood would best suit their brand, Pacific Heights was a no brainer. Fillmore Street holds a special place in Swanson Beard’s heart. “I grew up going to Fillmore Street after school as a child, and it’s where I fell in love with fashion,” she says. “The first dress I ever really wanted was at Betsy Johnson. I obsessively combed every rack at Crossroads, where my love of vintage started. It’s a great neighborhood walking street that attracts visitors and tourists.” The Veronicas worked with interior designer Carolina de Neufville to outfit the store with vintage furniture like scalloped factory lights and Billy Baldwin slipper chairs.
The sisters-in-law love denim
Tiger print, raffia wall coverings, and graphic silver wallpaper—by Meg Braff—give the space an eclectic, yet sophisticated vibe. The designers like to mix old with new, and this is reflected in the store. “No two Veronica Beard stores are alike,” Miele Beard explains. “We want each store to feel unique to the area, while also serving as a go-to for all of her wardrobe needs. Fillmore will carry our full ready-to-wear and accessories line, as well as our limited-edition collaborations including activewear with Bandier in May and a summer capsule with Kassatex in June.” There is also a carefully curated selection of thirdparty product that will change seasonally. The Beards plan to host events and fundraisers for their Veronica Beard Gives Back program. Every month, the fashion powerhouse features a different influential female and donate a portion of online orders to a charity that she champions. Their latest collection is described as “bold, strong and sexy” and features “statement florals, vibrant power suits and body-con dresses that celebrate the confidence of today’s woman.” Being in tune with the modern-day woman is easy because the Veronicas design clothes that they want to wear. “We’re constantly evolving to meet our customers’ needs and to give her simple, chic PHOTOS COURTESY OF VERONICA BEARD
options for work, weekend and everywhere in between,” Swanson Beard says. As for pieces that are perfect for San Francisco, they recommend the classic Miller dickey jacket paired with a hoodie dickey and skinny or flared jeans. But really, the entire Veronica Beard collection, with its feminine blouses, layering coats, flirty dresses, and flattering pants, is ideal for the Bay Area woman.

PAR-TEE Time to
IN HONOR OF ITS CENTENNIAL, PEBBLE BEACH GOLF LINKS HOSTS THE 119TH U.S. OPEN BY KATIE SWEENEY
ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, A NEW 18-HOLE GOLF COURSE, designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant and commissioned by developer Samuel F.B. Morse, opened on a stretch of the California coast. Thanks to its majestic views and challenging layout, Pebble Beach Golf Links was an instant coastline gem. Over the next century, the course became known as one of the most beautiful and desirable places to play golf in the world—and it is home to many of the greatest moments in the sport’s history. “It’s Pebble Beach—there’s something about it that brings out the best in each player,” Eric Steimer, the senior manager of the U.S. Open Championships, recently told Haute Living. “Not just the golf course, but when you set foot at Pebble Beach, you take in the sights, you take in the sounds, you take in the scenery, it’s something that goes a long way in the golfing world. This is a golf course that has a lineage for hosting championship golf. It has that history.” This June, Pebble Beach Golf Links hopes to make history again when it hosts the 119th U.S. Open Championship. It’s one of only six public courses that hold the distinction of hosting the U.S. Open. It will be the sixth time that the event has taken place on the Monterey Peninsula and marks a long relationship with the USGA, the United States Golf Association, the organization that puts on the U.S. Open. When the championship marked its centennial in 2000, it took place at Pebble Beach, so it’s fitting the U.S. Open will return for the course’s 100th anniversary. The 2000 U.S. Open was particularly memorable because Tiger Woods won by 15 strokes, arguably the most dominant performance in a golf major ever. With Woods’ miraculous comeback and win at the 2019 Masters, the golf world enthusiastically awaits what’s to come June 10-16, 2019. For lovers of the sport, the U.S. Open is one of the most thrilling weeks of golf. Unlike the Masters or PGA championships, the competition is open to any player with a handicap of 1.4 or below. Steimer calls it “the most accessible tournament. This is truly a democratic championship.” While recognizable names like Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, and Rory McIlroy will play, there’s always the chance of an unknown rising through Brooks Koepka high fives caddie Richard Elliott after winning the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. on Sunday, June 17, 2018

the ranks, and that’s part of the U.S. Open’s appeal. “These guys are going to have to compete with amateurs from around the world,” Steimer says. “Whether it’s here in America, Japan, or Europe, our qualifying stages are across the globe. It’s unique in the sense of how much it’s grown over the years. At this point, we see close to 10,000 applications. There always seems to be one or two names that catch lightning in a bottle going through the process. If it sounds exciting, there’s still plenty of time to get in on the fun. “There’s a plethora of different types of tickets,” Steimer explains. “Ranging from our gallery ticket, which starts at $60 for a practice round, up to our lodge premier ticket, which at $1500 gives you exclusive access to the different venues, like the Lodge at Pebble Beach, to experience their exquisite dining options.” These ticket holders will have the chance to taste One Hundred, a special blend of wine made by renowned winemaker Andy Erikson in partnership with Pebble Beach’s sommelier team in honor of the centennial. Other ticket options include access to the trophy club (an air-conditioned pavilion with open seating) or centennial club (premium food and beverage service with views of the 15th hole). The 28-acre property is beautifully landscaped and features fragrant gardens, relaxing walkways, and cozy fire pits. Guestrooms are spacious and luxurious with outdoor seating areas, heated bathroom floors, and inviting comfortable beds. The spa is open to all hotel guests, not just those with treatment appointments, so if you’re tired from golf and need to soak in the warm waters of the spa’s 101°F pool or chill in the eucalyptus steam room, you can do so. The resort is home to a signature restaurant, Lucia, where chef Cal Stamenov serves delicious farm-to-table CaliforniaSalonen cuisine (much of the produce is grown on site). Case in point: two times a year, Gn, and his current collections pay a visit to San Francisco. While here, he hosts a trunk show, atpals—many are pictured on this page wearing his designs. He also does this in other cities like Chicago and Dallas. On his spring trip to the Bay, Haute Living sat down with Gn for an exclusive look at his most recent designs. He uses four words to describe Fall 2019: “sexy, sensual, and Suzy Wong. I wanted a modern East meets West mood and thought of a 60s movie called The World of Suzy Wong. Suzy Wong is feminine and strong, but sexy and elegant at the same time.” Here, we share some of his best looks and Gn’s take on each one. Barbera Brown 38

The St. Regis Cairo debuted this past February
CAIRO, EGYPT Although Egypt hasn’t always been a go-to tourist destination in the past due to its political instability, that’s going to change this year in a big way thanks to the much-buzzed-about opening of Cairo’s Grand Egyptian Museum. GEM, as it’s best known, is a $1 billion marble shrine to the country’s history that will display—among lection, including his jewel-encrusted sandals and 3,300-year-old chariot. Stay at the St. Regis Cairo, which finally brought buzz into Cairo’s vintage hotel scene when it opened in February on the Nile. Opulence is everywhere on the 36-story property. Guestrooms have hand-crafted mother-of-pearl inlaid nightstands, sumptuous signature beds topped by exquisite Egyptian linens and bathrooms clad in light Emperador marble. A dramatic Swarovski chandelier dangles from a three-story vaulted ceiling in the Astor grand ballroom. Bespoke experiences await in no less than seven food and beverage outlets, while the two-story Iridium Spa with its vitality pools, ice rooms and adventure showers, almost demands relaxation. The traditional St. Regis butler service—the gold standard among worldwide St. Regis hotels—remains the ultimate luxury experience.

This Southern Italian city’s pleasures aren’t as obvious as those of the aforementioned locales, though travelers looking for a unique, immersive stay will love this little city that’s built into a rocky

ravine. Matera is known for its sassi, or cave dwellings, which had been written off as uninhabitable until savvy hoteliers began transforming them into luxury properties. In January, this UNESCO World Heritage site hosted a cultural festival which included 2,000 musicians and dozens of brass bands performing through the city’s candlelit streets. Experience similar magic when you book a reservation at Palazzo Gattini, a former 17th-century home modeled after Rupestrian churches that oozes old-world elegance. The old and the new live in perfect harmony at Palazzo Gattini: A wide staircase encircles a glass lift, while a fully modern spa that resembles a Roman bath of the past resides in one of the cavernous spaces.

Turkey’s Turquoise Coast is having a major moment. This stunning aquatic stretch between the Mediterranean and Aegean has seen a flurry of upscale activity in recent years, with rapid-fire openings from the world’s top-tier tourism brands, including Mandarin Oriental, Aman and Nikki Beach. The latest kid on the block is Bodrum Edition, which reopens for the season in May on the Aegean Sea within the Yalikavak Bay. Ian Schrager’s glamorous haute spot features a 330-foot white with a Turkish hammam; two restaurants from pioneering Peruvian chef Diego Muñoz, formerly of the world’s most celebrated restaurants El Bulli and Mugaritz; 102 guest rooms, suites and villas, some of which include private pools, balconies or gardens; and an exclusive beach club with a jetty that houses private cabanas. Take your time exploring Bodrum in style (it is known to be one of the seven wonders of the ancient world), but make sure not to miss the relatively unspoiled wonders of beach towns like Datça, Kas and Çıralı—because at the rate the Riviera is developing, they won’t be staying unspoiled for long. It’s been over a year since hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated the Caribbean in rapid succession, and in that time, there’s been a flurry of rehabilitation on many of the islands, including, most prominently, St. Barth. The island’s five-star properties have been revamped so extensively that they’re like new again, but better. Hôtel Le Toiny reopened in October with eight new, stellar private suites, while the LVMH-owned Cheval Blanc St-Barth Isle de France finally remerged in December with a new design by Jacques Grange. Plus there are 19 new rooms and suites and a tropical garden courtesy of world-renowned landscaper to already existing luxuries in the Guerlainspecific spa La Case de l’Isle and the White Bar eateries, and the personalized Art de Recevoir service. The island’s OG, the Eden Rock St. Barth (which is owned by Pippa Middleton’s in-laws), isn’t expected to reopen until November 2019, but when it does, look for extensive fanfare.

Head to Koh Samui and Krabi to tick “paradise” off your bucket list
THAILAND Thailand has something for everyone—from the rainforests of Phang-Nga to the hedonism of Bangkok to the magic of Koh Samui. But in 2019, the general focus is on luxury, specifically for Phuket. Enhancing the more-is-more mindset are a slew of luxury hotels, including The Standard and InterContinental, which join several new culinary events and music festivals in the area this year. in tourism—luxury hotel brands settling into Thailand’s capital include Rosewood, Waldorf Astoria, Edition, and Capella. Lebua Hotels & Resorts continues to lead Bangkok’s international culinary scene: Following the opening of Lebua No.3, the world’s tallest gin, caviar and vodka bar, last December, Lebua will introduce Chef’s Table, an interactive, fine-dining French establishment, and Pink, a Champagne bar serving France’s rarest vintages, this spring. And while these two well-known regions are definitely musts, Krabi should also be at the top of your bucket list. This southern Thai area with 200-plus islands off its coastline has the most breathtaking scenery in the world. We’re waiting with bated breath until a new Banyan Tree opens there in 2020.
TAHITI, FRENCH POLYNESIA There’s much to love about Tahiti: white sand beaches, the aroma of vanilla musk, tropical heat and crystal-clear turquoise water. While Nukutepipi is the newest game in town, Tahiti is still home to one of the world’s most famous celebrity retreats in The Brando, a private-eco-resort bought by Marlon Brando and beloved by Leonardo DiCaprio, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, that has somehow managed to rid itself of the Zika virus. ARGENTINA With a focus still very much on experiential travel, luxury lovers are heading to Argentina in droves for the glitz and glamour of Buenos Aires, but they’re staying for the wine of Mendoza and the adventure to be had in Patagonia. Cultural experiences are rife year-round in Buenos Aires, including Art Fair in May, its International Tango Festival in August, Art Basel and Masticar Food Festival in September, Open Polo Tournament in November and December, and ATP World Tour and Carnival in February. Check out the Viceroy Buenos Aires when it opens in the cosmopolitan city this year. Then make your way to Mendoza for wine, wine and more wine aptly considering Argentina is the fifth-largest wine producer in the world. While you’re there, indulge at master chef Francis Mallmann’s Siete Fuegos or 1884. Keep the Mallmann party train going by heading to Patagonia to indulge in the chef’s $43,000 cooking class and stay at his casa, on the private island of Lago La Plata. Work off your foodie fiesta on the world’s longest hiking trail—the 1,700-mile Route of Parks—which passes through Cape Horn to the Chilean Lake District. NAMIBIA, AFRICA An expedition to the beautiful, sub-Saharan southwestern country of Namibia along Africa’s Skeleton Coast will be a popular destination this year, thanks, in part, to Angelina Jolie. The Oscar-winning actress—a longtime human rights advocate who holds the position of UNHCR Special Envoy—inspired French hotelier Arnaud Zannier to open Omaanda, a 10-hut lodge near the Namibian capital of Windhoek within the Zannier Reserve by N/a’an ku sê, a new private animal conservancy. The lodge offers guests amenities including a bar found on the edge of a heated infinity pool overlooking the Savanna, a boutique and a spa. Zannier Hotels also opened Sonop, a glamorous, 1920s-style tented camp in the southern Namib Desert this spring. Zannier Hotels’ properties lead the pack of intimate, upscale lodges that are catching on like wildfire in the Namib Desert for those seeking an elevated safari experience, though the remote Serra Cafema—which recently reopened after a major refurbishment—is a solid op-

Enjoy the wild and windswept scenery of the Highlands’ lochs and glens at five-star retreats like the new Fife Arms in Braemar, where each of the 46 bedrooms and suites offers its own unique décor inspired by a place, person, event or custom integral to the life of its village, including Robert Louis Stevenson, who wrote Treasure Island there and Lord Byron, who penned the poem Dark Lochnagar about the area, or Inverlochy Castle in Fort William, a onetime haunt of Queen Victoria’s. Sample some of the best Scotch whiskies the world has to offer—GlenDronach, The Macallan and Oban are a few of our favorites. Go for the Highland Games, which run every weekend from May through September, and if you have time, take a day to visit the V&A Dundee, which—though it’s south of the Highlands—is worth the trip. It houses more than 300 exhibits dedicated to Scottish design.

URING THE BYZANTINE ERA, FROM 330 AD to 1453, Constantinople (modernday Istanbul) was the center of the most influential commercial, cultural, and military power in Europe. Because of its loca-

tion, Constantinople was a wealthy city at the center of trade between Asia, Europe, and Africa. For thousands of years, and beyond the fall of Rome, the city maintained a vibrant society rich in the arts, entertainment, and literature. Turkish pleasures
from delicious regional cuisine to fine rugs and spices drew visitors from around the globe. Serving as a sentinel overlooking the Bosphorus Strait, which separates Europe and Asia,
Constantinople rose between the glistening blue Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. The city’s strategic location made it one of the most fortified cities in Europe and almost impenetrable by invaders. That was until the son of Murad II, Mehmed the Conqueror, overtook the city on May 29, 1453. Constantinople went from Byzantine influence to Ottoman rule with the Sultan Mehmed II at the helm. The Ottoman invasion brought Persian culture to the city and calligraphy, poetry, mosaic tile work, and architecture were some of the treasures bestowed on the town in the 1400s. It is the spectacular combination of the Byzantine

and Ottoman cultures that give Istanbul its distinct beauty.

Fast-forward to modernity, and Istanbul is reinventing itself as an international gateway for travelers from the four corners of the world. One of the most significant milestones in Turkish and global civil aviation history is the launch of the new Istanbul Airport, which officially opened on April 6, 2019. It is projected to be the world’s busiest international hub by passenger capacity. Recently, Turkish Airlines has created a direct, non-stop flight from SFO to Istanbul. Istanbul is a massive city with over 15 million residents. It is also the cultural center of the country filled with numerous opportunities for indulgent experiences. Two of the top hotels, Raffles and Ciragan Palace Kempinski, are both incredibly luxurious, but very different. ON THE RIDE FROM MARSH HARBOUR AIRPORT TO THE ABACO CLUB on Winding Bay the driver offers guests a bottle of water. If you are thirsty and accept the courtesy, you’ll be handed a plastic bottle branded with the club’s logo and trademark parrot. There is nothing out of the ordinary with the exchange or the water bottle—except its color. The plastic is tinted a brilliant turquoise and foreshadows what is to come. After a 25-minute ride, where the driver is on the wrong side of the street—the club is on an island in the Bahamas, which was once a part of England’s Commonwealth, with UK driving customs—you arrive at the entrance to The Abaco Club.

Here, you’ll discover spectacular seaside views with the turquoise Atlantic Ocean stretching as far as the eye can see, until it becomes one with the cloudless blue sky. If blue is the star of The Abaco Club show, green is the supporting actor. Emerald palm fronds sway with the breeze, tropical trees dot the property, and the golf course—the grass shades of lime, shamrock, and kelly green—serves as a stunning natural backdrop. Coming from San Francisco, where the gray fog, gray Bay, gray concrete hills, and gray skyscrapers mute the senses, The Abaco Club is like experiencing the world in color for the first time, everything is vibrant and fresh. The community sits on a 600-acre private peninsula. It isn’t a resort that is open to the public, but rather a private sporting club with a Scottish-style golf course, 2.5-mile white sand beach, and 92 residences varying in size. Like many destinations in the Bahamas, members navigate the club by golf cart. The larger estate homes sit on a hill that overlooks the Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie-designed golf course and Atlantic ocean. These grand properties have four or more bedrooms, expansive decks with private pools, and fully equipped kitchens. One of the things that make Abaco Club unique is that no two residences are exactly alike. Lots are available, and interested parties can craft their

Diners can look forward to elegant preparations of local poultry and imported beef, pork, and lamb—but seafood is where The Cliff House shines. Ahi tuna tartare is paired with a tangy sesameginger vinaigrette, crab and prawns are piled high atop buttery pappardelle, and seared scallops are nestled into a delicious curried parsnip puree. Dessert lovers will go crazy for the housemade ice cream—the coconut flavor is excellent. Besides sunning, sailing, and savoring scrumptious cuisine, one can while away the day with a variety of pursuits at The Abaco Club. There is a fitness center, tennis courts, spa, swimming pool, bicycles, and golf. The club is in expansion mode, and a brand new beach facility with oceanfront residences is coming soon. IN 1999, HAUTE LIVING’S PUBLISHER, OLIVIA HSU DECKER, BECAME THE OWNER OF the legendary Château de Villette, a stunning property outside the center of Paris. Located Northwest of the city about 35 minutes from The Champs Elysées and 15 minutes from Versailles, Château de Villette was built in the 17th-century between 1660 to 1696. The team who built Versailles, architect Francois Mansart (1598-1666) and his nephew, Jules Hardouin-Mansart (1646-1708), also designed Villette, a French historical monument. The splendid gardens were designed by Andre Le Notre, who created the gardens at Versailles. Its classic and elegant design, which mimicked Versailles, earned Château de Villette the nickname of “Le Petit Versailles.” Château de Villette was initially built for the Count of Aufflay, Jean Dyell II, who served as ambassador to Italy for King Louis XIV. In the 19th-century, the owners Sophie de Grouchy and Marquess de Condorcet hosted many prominent guests at Villette. These included Thomas Jefferson, who was the American ambassador to France at the time, the Marquis de Lafayette, who helped George Washington battle the British during the American Revolution, the poet and writer, Voltaire, and the doctor and philosopher, Pierre-JeanGeorges Cabanis.

When Hsu Decker purchased the grand estate, she became a part of a small group of people to call the illustrious ch창teau home. For 12 years, Hsu Decker enjoyed the magnificent residence. With an octagonal grand salon, a majestic dining room with a carved stone buffet and wine cooling fountains, an elegant music room with magnificent boiseries, a stately library, a stone foyer with grand staircase, and 200 acres of gardens, Villette is one of the most significant and sumptuous ch창teaux in France. Currently, Ch창teau de Villette has seven luxury suites in the main wing and seven additional bedrooms in the left wing. Amenities include a heated outdoor swimming pool, fully equipped gym, internet, integrated audio and visual systems in each bedroom, fully equipped professional kitchen, security

system, ample parking, a chapel, helipad, and a full staff that takes care of meals, cleaning, and other services. During her tenure as owner, Hsu Decker renovated and decorated the space turning it into a celebrity vacation rental where stars like Lenny Kravitz and John Travolta would relax on extended stays. She hosted prestigious guests and events like retreats and cooking classes. In 2006, Sony Pictures and director Ron Howard rented Ch창teau de Villette to film the movie version of the best-selling novel, The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown. Howard wanted to stay faithful to the book

Located on the Pacific Coast in between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta, Careyes is a posh community that savvy Europeans have been visiting since it was opened by Italian entrepreneur Gian Franco Brignone in 1968. The easiest way to experience Careyes is to book a suite at El Careyes Club & Residences. The 35-resident beachfront club was built by famed Mexican architects Alberto Mazzoni and Diego Villaseñor in 1976. The top floor is completely outdoors, and a sexy lounge space sits under a massive palapa—a traditional Mexican A-frame thatched roof. Although there is no grocery store or market in Careyes, the community boasts unique restaurants, from the club’s poolside eatery La Duna, that serves classic Mexican cuisine to Punto Como, an Italian-Argentine style grill and pizzeria in the pueblo’s plaza. The home-like eatery, with just 24 seats, features local seasonal produce and fish. The handwritten menu changes nightly, but items you might find include perfectly poached octopus on thin pieces of jicama, fish with confit potatoes, or homemade pasta with shrimp and tomatoes. Pueblo25 also has an extensive list of mezcal and wine, so come thirsty. If relaxing in the lap of luxury has you anxious to give back, visit El Careyes Foundation in the town square. The nonprofit oversees an assortment of programs that better the local neighborhood: English classes for kids, bike workshops for the community, and enrichment for all through arts, music, and film. The organization also runs a sea turtle conservation center that ensures just-laid eggs are harvested and protected from dangerous predators until they hatch. In 1983, only ten turtles laid eggs in Careyes. Today, more than 2,000 sea turtles visit the private beach to lay eggs.

and buttocks, Emsculpt is a 30-minute treatment with no pain and no downtime. Through high-intensity electromagnetic pulses, a unique device contracts the muscles. The procedure is the equivalent to doing 20,000 crunches or squats—depending on if it’s placed on the stomach or buttocks. A series of four treatments is recommended for best results. Emsculpt doesn’t hurt; however, the sensation can be weird-feeling and causes the body to contract or laugh unexpectedly. It’s an ideal option for those looking to shed that last little bit of fat and get the toned and fit appearance of an avid exerciser.

HAUTE INTERIORS “My wallpaper has to be the perfect shade of lilac—and it took some experimenting to achieve, good design takes time!—so as a result, they just started painting the magnolias last week. Also, an issue overseas with my rug—the vendor called to say they didn’t finish it in time, they have to pull it off the weave to get it to America. But we always plan for the unexpected and have a backup rug just in case. You never know what can happen in customs. Oh the joys of Showcase!” It’s T-minus two weeks before the 42nd annual San Francisco Decorator Showcase opens on April 24, 2019 and designer Dina Bandman is counting down the days with a burst of activity and excitement. “There’s always a fear that it’s not going to come together,” Bandman says. “Then, I have to tell myself that, so far, everything has come together. So there’s no reason why this year will be any different.” It’s Bandman’s fourth year in a row participating in the Decorator Showcase, and although she’s a pro, the experience does not get easier. The showcase—which involves a prestigious group of designers creating beautiful interiors for a stunning house in a short amount of time—is put on by University High School. With the city’s top designers vying for a certain number of spaces, and the finished product open to the public for a month, April 27 to May 27, it’s one of spring’s most anticipated events. Over the years, Showcase (as those in the know call it) has taken on a life of its own, but it should be noted that the home funds University’s financial aid program, which supports 25 percent of its 410 students. Although it usually nets about $500K, Shaundra Bason, University High School’s development director, estimates that this year’s Showcase could raise $800K to $900K—thanks to the grandness of the house. Located at 3800 Washington Street in Presidio Heights and called Le Petit Trianon, the mansion is an 18,000 at Versailles. Built in 1904, Le Petit Trianon survived the 1906 earthquake and fires and is a national historic landmark. It is the second time the mansion has been a Showcase house—it was first featured in 1982. Today, Le Petit Trianon is a hub of activity with 43 design firms racing against time to finish their spaces before the press preview on April 24. At the center of the hustle and bustle is Jenny Borden, University High’s director of the Decorator Showcase. “I am the mother hen—when I need to crack the whip at the house to make sure that everyone is getting everything done and done correctly, I do it,” Borden says. “But then, if someone needs help I’m there to help them. I’m here to open up the house in the mornings—it’s like a bunch of puppy dogs waiting outside for me and eager to Dina Bandman

from start to finish, anywhere from a three- to sevenmonth arc that begins with the announcement of the showcase house. This year, the road to Showcase began earlier than usual when Le Petit Trianon was announced as the house on November 1, 2018. “Once we find a house and sign a contract with the homeowner, I study the house as a whole,” Borden says. “Then I had a demo team come in and demolish pretty much the entire 18,000-square foot house.” Borden puts together a packet that is sent to over 400 designers inviting them to submit proposals to participate in the design of Showcase. They have three days to walk around the home and decide which two spaces they are interested in creating. “Designers are given a packet full of plans, and we walk around, scout the rooms and decide which

space speaks to you,” Bandman says. “You have a week to put together a mood board to present to the design advisory board. You can present up to two mood boards.” The advisory board is a group of 15 people—architects, interior designers, journalists, artists, gallery owners—who study the proposals and select which firm designs each room. After designing a bathroom, laundry room, and nursery for the last three showcases, Bandman knew she wanted to try a bedroom. Ideas have to be laid out because the designers don’t interact with the advisory board. “The proposal boards are 24 by 36 inches, and everything has to be laid out on this one board,” Bandman says. “We put all our fabrics, color schemes and room renderings on the board, and everything has to be perfect because you don’t have the opportunity to talk to the design advisory board. You write up a little essay about your room, you turn it in, and then you wait.”

At Le Petit Trianon, 273 people (from 183 design firms) participated in the walk-around viewing, and 136 proposal boards were submitted. The home was sectioned off into 43 spaces—including outdoor areas like the garden and hallways, so of the 136 proposals, 43 were selected. Borden is tasked with placing each of the plans in the proper space at Le Petit Trianon and then presents the projects to the advisory board. “It’s a long process—this year it was a two-day review,” Borden says. “There are so many proposal boards and rooms, and then there’s a lot of back and forth within the advisory. It’s not an easy process. It’s very grueling. There are lots of comments and opinions.” Once the designers are selected, Borden is tasked with breaking the good or bad news. In the past, she would call each firm individually, but last fall, she only called the awarded designers. “When you get that call from Jenny Borden, your heart skips a beat,” Bandman says. “I was Jonathan Rachman’s living room at the 2017 Showcase

DINA BANDMAN SHARES AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK AT HER ROOM, MARIE’S MAGNOLIA. On the name: “All my rooms have alliteration to them, and the wallpaper usually inspires the name. Last year there were lemons on the wallpaper, and it was a nursery, so that’s how I came up with Lemon Drop Lullaby. This year, the wallpaper is magnolias, and because of how Le Petit Trianon is based on Marie Antoinette’s former home, I decided to combine the two. Feminine and fanciful in its design, this space is imagined as Marie Antoinette’s private quarters. A place where the Queen routinely The first ever exterior/on-home art installation (by Simon Breitbard Fine Arts in collaboration with artist AJ Oishi) debuted at the 2018 Showcase
sought refuge from palace intrigue—or perhaps merely created more?” On the wall and ceiling: “Visitors to this room will be invited to experience an exquisite magnolia garden that lies within. The room will feature a pale lilac lacquered ceiling with a delicate plaster treatment of white magnolia branches trailing across the ceiling. On the furniture: “No master bedroom for the Queen would be complete without a fainting sofa and seating area for those who are permitted to grace her inner sanctuary. The Queen’s four-poster bed will feature whispery lightweight valances—so thin they are almost sheer, but not quite. The window treatments will be a refined wool fabric with a Holland & Sherry hand-embroidered finish, drapery perfection.” On the fireplace and mirror: “Hung above the fireplace will be a custom mirror, framed by the same delicate plaster magnolia branches seen across the ceiling. The fireplace itself will be remade to resemble Calacatta marble—timeless and regal in its design.”

VENETIAN Nights THE HISTORIC ENCLAVE TRANSFORMS INTO THE PLAYGROUND FOR THE RICH AND FAMOUS DURING CARNIVAL BY: TERESA RODRIGUEZ SINCE THE 11TH CENTURY, VENETIANS HAVE BEEN CELEBRATING THE LAST FEW DAYS BEFORE LENT WITH FAIRYTALE MERRIMENT, masquerade balls, and extravagant feasts. This winter, Venice was in the media spotlight after devastating floods filled St. Mark’s Square and forced merchants to close, leaving tourists stunned. Luckily the water subsided, and by spring Venice was again lively and ready to welcome the world to Carnival. Along with strolling through the historical allies of Venice and catching a glimpse of masked party-goers, Carnival offers a plethora of divine diversions. Il Ballo del Doge: Vanity Fair says that one of the most coveted events in the world is Il Ballo del Doge. It is considered by many, including the Wall Street Journal, as the most sumptuous, refined and exclusive masquerade party in the world. For a certain type of pedigree, the ball is on their list of 100 things to do at least once in life. It is held in the historical, and majestic palace Pisani Moretta, which is located on the Grand Canal. The only way to get to the ball is by water taxi or gondola. Michael Tilson Thomas

ASIAN ART MUSEUM RAISES $1.5M AT GORGEOUS GALA On March 7, the Asian Art Museum hosted its annual fundraising gala chaired by Michele Alioto and attended by Mayor London Breed and many other notables. The spectacular evening raised over $1.5 million to support the museum’s education programs. Fashion, art, and food were highlighted throughout the night, which began with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. Four hundred guests mingled amongst floral arrangements, special displays, and the current exhibit, a fashion retrospective called Kimono Refashioned. During the four-course meal, Dan Haute Couture, a Chinese designer, presented a fashion collection of looks created for the event.

The event featured New Yorkbased designer Jason Wu and was presented in partnership with Sam Malouf Authentic Luxury. The auxiliary is a group of 100 women who raise over $2 million per year for the ballet. One way they obtain funds? By hosting events like the fashion show, which was chaired by Andi Valo-Espina. Wu, who was in attendance, presented 20 looks from his fall 2019 collection and 10 looks from the last decade of his career. INSIDE AUBREY BREWSTER’S KAISEKI BLOOM BIRTHDAY PARTY Known for his lavish and over the top celebrations, Aubrey Brewster was in fine form on March 24 at his annual birthday luncheon. Brewster transformed Neiman Marcus’ fifth-floor event space into an enchanting Japanese-inspired orchard. Everywhere you looked there were cherry blossoms. A wooden bridge and black-rock brook guided guests into the opulent dining room where a 50’ table was set with a golden tablecloth for forty of Brewster’s most fantastic friends. Guests were treated to cocktails, caviar, Champagne, and sushi before sitting down to a five-course meal. Learn more about Brewster’s flair for entertaining on page 105.
