Publisher’s LETTER AS WE ARE ABOUT TO BID FAREWELL TO 2019, WE celebrate many of our favorite fall events in this issue: the San Francisco Fall Show, the Mill Valley Film Festival, the Monaco Yacht Show, the Monte-Carlo Gala for Global Ocean, the European Culture Prize. We also capture the highlights of San Francisco Opera Ball and San Francisco Symphony Opening Gala. This issue is also packed with cuisine, drinks, fashion, shopping, and travel. Enjoy the festive stories and beautiful images while curling up by a cozy fire at home. Our cover story this issue is Prince Albert Foundation’s MonteCarlo Gala For Global Ocean and the 2019 Honoree Robert Redford. We support this event particularly because San Francisco Bay Area is surrounded by Bay and Ocean. The Ocean plays a critical role for our well-being, our quality of life, it affects the climatic and life balance of our planet. We must protect our ocean and stop behaviors that create pollution and bring attention to climate change that resulting in rising sea level and threatening our coastal properties. I also covered the Monaco Yacht Show where the focus this year was for the ship-building industry and yachting practices to be sustainable and “green”. We must shine a spot light on these important issues that our government doesn’t seem to believe their importance. We are looking forward to featuring a close-up story with Mr. Redford in our future issue on his life-long environmental protection efforts. I just returned from the European Culture Prize in Vienna. Among other recipients, our beloved San Francisco philanthropist and composer Gordon Getty was awarded for his musical accomplishments and iconic Sophia Loren was awarded for her legendary film career by her son Carlo Ponti Jr. who is founder/director/conductor of the non-profit Los Angeles Virtuosi Orchestra. We will feature a cover story in a future issue on Sophia as well as Carlo who will be performing at Festival Napa Valley’s 15th Anniversary in 2010. We will also feature a close-up story on Gordon Getty who will premier his new opera “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” at the Festival. IT IS RARE TO DEVELOP A LONG-LASTING FRIENDSHIP LIKE THE ONE OLIVIA AND I HAVE. WE MET IN 2003, SHE AND JOEL GOODRICH attended the launch of TangoDiva, an online social network I started before Facebook existed. We have traveled the world together, laughing all the way. From partying with Vogue photographers and models at her château in Paris to almost getting locked in a garage in downtown San Francisco—our adventures are anything but dull. I never get tired of listening to her stories and fascinating history. I keep threating her that I’m going to write her book one day! It will be a hybrid action adventure with a bit of history, mystery, and luxury. So, when Olivia asked me to join her at Haute Living San Francisco, I was honored. All of us have “real” day jobs, but we come together after hours and on the weekends to capture the beauty of San Francisco and Northern California. Olivia’s goal is to create a magazine that gives readers a slice of something delicious, while showcasing the good deeds and charity work that happens in our town. It is a privilege to serve you, our amazing readers. None of this would be possible without the incredible dedication of our writers. This month, we have a stellar lineup of professionals who are going to knock your socks off with their prose. So, without further ado, let me introduce you to this issue’s sensational scribes:

PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO S E-HYBRID I AM A POSITIVE PERSON, BUT LET’S START BY GETTING THIS OUT OF THE WAY—I wasn’t always a fan of the Panamera. I know, it ticked the right boxes and all, but it did not thrill me in the looks department (yes, I know, but I am a beholder). There, I’ve said it. It’s easier to admit now, because I love the look of the new generation Panamera. The car isn’t bulbous and it looks like the proper GT form, with a rocket as a role model. Although looks aren’t everything, they do count and, to me, those looks count a whole lot more now. It may be blasphemous to the Brits and Italians on the body. (I hope that I haven’t offended too many people in just the first paragraph.) So, now that there’s a great look—and it sure looks fast—is it writing checks that the engine, transmission, and suspension can cash? Abso-turbo-lutely! This baby is a 680HP twin-turbo racecar with room for four. With 626 pound-feet of torque, it can push every one of them into the backs of their seats. What helps is the 550HP V-8 gets tremendous oomph from the 136HP electric motor, and the torque curve on that motor is right now. As the e-motor is sandwiched in between the V8 and the 8-speed PDK transmission, the car didn’t need to be stretched. So seamless is the power transfer from the V-8 and electric motor that the transmission feels as though all three were developed as one. Would you believe that it can finish 0-60 faster than you can read this sentence? That’s under three seconds. (Okay, maybe you read faster than I

do.) Anyway, with a quarter-mile time of about eleven seconds and a terminal speed of 125MPH (top speed is a bit under 200MPH), you can look swell pulling up to the opera and, on your way home, blow off a supercar at the Stoplight Grand Prix. You did notice the word “hybrid” in its name, right? No, it’s not related to a Prius, as it’s only meant to move the fully-charged car about fourteen miles on all-electric driving. Once the battery is flat, you can plug in and charge it up in two hours or more, depending upon your home charger’s electron diet. However, the car does charge the battery while driving in gasoline mode. Beside, to me, all-electric driving isn’t what this car is about—it’s having the explosion of power that an electric motor can provide. The Panamera is spacious and plush, as is de rigueur in GT cars today, and it does not disappoint. The switchgear feels solid, the controls fall readily to hand, and of course, the ergonomics are amazing. It feels as though they’ve measured every possible driver for height, weight, arm length, etc. and created the car that adjusts to exactly what the driver wants. Just in case anyone asks, “So, what’s it cost?” I want you to be prepared.
In “Sapphire Blue Metallic” with “Agate Grey” leather interior, it was stunning.

TheHAUTE LISTAuto So, it’s no surprise that the modern-day Bugattis, all of which are named after the company’s famous drivers from the past, have impressive stats. The initial Veyron had 1,001 horses, and the next iteration exceeded that with 1,250. The Chiron weighed in with 1,500 ponies; now, the Centodieci —unveiled at “The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering” during August’s Monterey Peninsula / Pebble Beach Car Week — arrives with 1,600. (Rumor has it that, as of press time, the Chiron Super Sport will up the ante again. That seems likely, since, as I write this, a “pre-production vehicle of a Bugatti Chiron derivative” beat the world record for production cars by besting 300 MPH on a German test track.) Centodieci, as fans of the Romance languages can guess, means 110, which honors the company’s 110th anniversary. The August day when it was announced, the company said that only 10 of these cars would be made, that all 10 had been sold, and that one buyer had bought two of them. As of that date, the announced base price was 8 million euros (about $8.8 million each). What’s so special about this car? First, let’s look at the design. Thanks to Achim Ancheidt, Bugatti’s head designer from the company’s modern-day resurrection, its design stems from roots in the past (way back to the EB110, the first Bugatti built after the company’s long hiatus: Ettore died in 1947, and the company ceased operations in 1952) before the VW Group bought the company. Yet, the Centodieci benefits from Ancheidt’s strong eye toward the future and his knowing how things function. He can turn a wrench as well as brandish a design pen, as evidenced by the 1920s Type 35 Bugatti that he is restoring himself in his spare time.
BUGATTI CENTODIECI ETTORE BUGATTI WAS DESTINED TO BUILD CARS. FIRST, his name had that certain je ne sais quoi and it looked great on a radiator badge. No disrespect to Ford, for example, but Bugatti really sounded much faster. And the fact that Ettore was an Italian who built his company in France gave the company special cachet. Being from a family of artists was another plus, so perhaps you could say that the Bugatti vehicles were preordained. With a pedigree stretching back to the early 1900s, Bugatti was the brand to beat on the world’s race tracks, especially in the 1920s. The company’s Type 35B won the first-ever Monaco Grand Prix (1929 — and eight of the 16 cars in the race were Bugattis) Like most cars from that time, the brand was built on the back of racing accomplishments.

and Bugatti vehicles won many other competitions of that era.

Butterfly Aviation has built partnerships with local car services and limousine companies; so, if you want to land at an airport instead of at one of their partner wineries or resorts, they can easily coordinate land transportation to your final destination. Some of the most popular itineraries include a trip to Lake Sonoma and Mauritson Ranch where the owners will fly with you and talk about the land and winery while soaring over the property. Healdsburg is another favorite destination where the helicopter lands at the small local airport just five minutes from town. A limousine picks up guests and takes them downtown. The full itinerary includes dinner at the Michelin-star restaurant, Valette. Lake Tahoe is another fantastic trip with four different airports where Butterfly Aviation can land, and less than an hour from most Bay Area locations.

It’s a bold new category of drink pairing, one that only works in the hands of someone with a nuanced palate and impeccable sense of balance. Chapman obliges with drinks thoughtfully intended to pair with food. He has suffused sake with rare, shade-grown tea, steeped lamb skins in a rice whiskey hot toddy, or emboldened house cucumbershiso-lemongrass kombucha with shochu and koji yeast. Sourcing blueberries from the Maine farm where he picked them as a child, his blueberry sparkling wine has no sugars added, except for natural blueberry sugar. Mixed with fermented quince juice, Spirit Works vodka (from Sonoma County), and bergamot oil, it tastes like a dry red wine and pairs beautifully with Maldonado’s dill-apple-cucumber-horseradish beef tartare. Chapman riffs on a classic Bijou cocktail, mixing sweet white vermouth and gin infused with in house “chartreuse,” an herbaceous mix of toasted cardamom, bitter dandelion root/greens, and saffron, then dotted with orange oil. The Bijou sings with Maldonado’s duck confit saffron ravioli.

Drying fig leaves in the sun on the rooftop, he steeps them in Carpano Antica vermouth for a lovely bitter profile, then stirs vermouth with a blend of five rye and bourbon whiskies, giving it all a brown butter fat wash for a lush Manhattan variation. HauteSHOPPING LITTLE ELSE BUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD’S NAME REFLECTS THE FACT THAT COW Hollow was home to Gold Rush-era dairy farms supplying milk to residents of a young city. Known as Spring Valley during the mid-19th century, the forerunner of Union Street was an unpaved path from the Presidio, cutting across the tall grassland beside small creeks populated with wild ducks, quail, and rabbits. A century later, post-Gold Rush elegance blossomed in the ex-cow patch as innovative merchants, stylish antique shops, and home furnishing showrooms moved into converted carriage houses, stables, and barns. Elaborate, elegant Victorian residences followed. Because Cow Hollow survived the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906, period architecture remains intact, much of it in use for dining and shopping, offering everything from caviar to lingerie. Take a closer look at independent Union Street shops with holiday gifts in mind: what’s delicious, what’s pretty, what’s handcrafted, what’s organic, and what’s sexy. The Caviar Co. is a sister act. Two Texas-bred siblings conceived a sophisticated upstairs shop as both a retail space and a tasting lounge for a range of sustainable caviar in attractive tins. The Emerald Caviar Tasting flight is available as a Christmas gift certificate. Perfect for navigating the streets of our seven-by-seven pedestrian peninsula, stylish footwear maker Birdies combines three elements: the style of a designer flat, the support of a sneaker, with the softness of a slipper. Choose sparkle flats, velvet slides, or The Starling, a comfy and classic smoking slipper, now available in leather. Lingerie and intimate accessories from Pink Bunny come with attentive, personalized service that’s missing from the department store experience. Step into Jo Malone London for a botanical scented candle or cologne to accompany a gift-boxed chemise and a bunch of roses from The Bud Stop, an all-season Union Street constant since 1984. For 70 years, makeup artists and performers have sworn by Kryolan, a Go subtle or bold with false eyelashes from their Union Street store, one of just three in the US. When it’s time to take a break from shopping, stop in at KAIYO for contemporary Peruvian and Japanese Nikkei flavors and watch passersby at a front patio table warmed by heat lamps. On a sunny afternoon in late fall, Cobb salad and wine served at a cheery, gingham-clothed table is reliably social at Perry’s, the venerable Union Street dining and drinking tradition that just turned 50.

2500 PATRONS CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF MTT SAN FRANCISCO PAYS TRIBUTE TO HIS FINAL SEASON BY NAVID ARMSTRONG • PHOTOS BY DREW ALTIZER
MORE THAN 2,500 ENTHUSIASTIC GUESTS ATTENDED THE SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY’S OPENING Night Gala, in honor of Michael Tilson Thomas and his husband Joshua Robison, held on Wednesday, September 4, 2019. The Symphony celebrated the start of Thomas’ 25th season with a program that included Glinka’s overture to Ruslan and Ludmila and songs by Copeland, including Gordon Getty’s arrangement of “Shenandoah” and ending with the majestic finale of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9: Ode, “To Joy!” It was touching when Thomas asked for those patrons who had been to the Symphony’s Opening Night Gala 25 years ago, to stand up. At the end of the performance, Thomas and the orchestra were joined on stage by Joshua Robison and some of the most prominent figures in American politics, among them the Speaker of the House and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and Paul F. Pelosi; California Governor Gavin Newsom and Jennifer Siebel Newsom; San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed; San Francisco Symphony President Sakurako Fisher; and, Gala co-chairs Nicole Lacob and Rachael Bowmam. Rick Welts and Joe Lacob were among some of those who presented Thomas with a rose or a jersey from each of the Bay Area’s sports teams—San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Golden Gates Warriors, and Oakland Athletics. Beach Blanket Babylon’s Jennifer Morrison sang “San Francisco” at the encore and brought the audience to their feet for a singalong, adding to the night’s excitement. The concert ended with celebratory confetti.

FEATURE To pay tribute to Michael Tilson Thomas and his quarter-century tenure at the Symphony, many guests chose to wear blue, his favorite color, to the Opening Night Gala. San Francisco Symphony President Sako Fisher was a vision in blue; dressed to perfection in a Dior gown and an Alexander McQueen leather jacket. Others in various shades of blue included Social Media Chair Catherine Geeslin in Roland Mouret; Natasha Dolby in Monique Lhuillier; Mary Beth Shimmon in an off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera; and Allison Speer in Andrew Gn. It was beautiful indeed, as a sea of blue walked into the Patrons Pavilion for a fabulous dinner prepared by McCalls Catering and Events. Carefully orchestrated lighting took patrons from a cerulean blue sunset to a twilight evening. Co-chairs Rachel Bowman (in show-stopping Elsa Schiaparelli haute couture) and Nicole Lacob (ever so elegant in an Oscar de la Renta gown) set the tone for a night of glamour. Vanessa Getty and Katie Traina looked equally dazzling in their Vionnet gowns, while Karen Richardson was ethereal in a romantic Carolina Herrera tea length gown, as was Jennifer Walske in a gold gown by Monique Lhuillier.

Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and his wife Nicole and Mike Krieger and his wife Kaitlyn (in Dries Van Noten) were also there to celebrate, as was Marissa Mayer, dressed in Carolina Herrera. Josh Olshansky (in Lanvin) and Laurie Olshansky (in Alexander McQueen) looked cameraready on the pink carpet! The “Blueprint Studios” decor evoked an immersive and magical starlit spectacle and highlighted Jarrod Baumann’s black and gold Dolce Gabbana brocade tuxedo. Todd Coyles in Paul Smith, along with his energetic team, represented Neiman Marcus, the night’s Signature Education Sponsor. Guest Artist Underwriters Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem were one of the most impressive couples of the night, while Dede Wilsey was ever so regal in her Andrew Gn gown. Among the ladies who wore stunning red gowns to the Symphony’s Opening Night Gala were Shannon Getty, Komal Shah, Holly Cuggino (Dolce and Gabbana), Ruchi Sanghvi (Valentino), Sara Steingart, Pia Cohler, and Nicole Systrom. Following the concert, the guests enjoyed an “All Out” after party on Grove Street and in the Tented Pavilion. The 12,000 square foot space looked magical with over 3,000 lighted gold pendants cascading from colossal, illuminated fringe structures. They danced to entertainment provided by Conjunto Karabali, Salsamania, DJL!, Motown on Mondays, and VibraSON and enjoyed complimentary drinks and food from various San Francisco establishments. Proceeds from the Opening Night Gala benefit the San Francisco Symphony’s myriad artistic, educational, and community programs, which serve over 100,000 students, teachers, and families in the Bay Area each year. Music enthusiasts enjoyed the undeniable power of the event’s music, confirming Nietzsche’s thought: “Without music, life would be a mistake.”

FILM FESTIVAL

MARIN COUNTY ROLLS OUT THE RED CARPET BY JENNIFER RAISER
HE NIGHT SKIES TWINKLED EVEN BRIGHTER WHEN THE STARS CAME OUT TO celebrate the Mill Valley Film Festival. The beloved festival fuses Hollywood glamour with the laid-back enthusiasm of Marin County, resulting in an intimate, but electric, series of cinematic events. Now in its 42nd year, the MVFF offers extraordinary access to a chockablock schedule of insider premieres, exclusive screenings, industry tributes, and up-close encounters with red carpet stalwarts. This year’s festival opened with an appearance by Jamie Foxx and a screening of his powerhouse new film, Just Mercy, a true-life story about an aspiring young attorney, played by Michael B. Jordan, working to exonerate condemned prisoners on Alabama’s Death Row. Foxx’s performance as real-life prisoner Walter McMillan was lauded at the Opening Night Gala as one of his finest, raising definite buzz about a certain gold statue. The film’s subject — the challenges of navigating a highly biased legal system in pursuit of justice — felt especially relevant, and the crowd’s enthusiasm made Foxx’s appearance even more welcome. Actress Karan Kendrick, who offers a nuanced performance as McMillan’s wife, joined Foxx for the premiere. After the film’s screening, the open-air Opening Night party at Marin Country Mart was abuzz. With the addition of a live band for dancing, local restaurants offering delectable bites, and a starry, balmy night, the festival was off to a strong start. 35

JUST AN ICON LIVING Easily one of the most recognizable and covetable prints in all of fashion, Louis Vuitton’s Classic Monogram on canvas finish was born in 1896 and has been reinterpreted and reimagined over the years. Its latest iterations by the Maison’s Artistic Director Nicolas Ghesquière give it new meaning, while maintaining its timeless elegance and its representation of the pinnacle in luxury. Shapes like the Petite Malle, the Cannes and the Petite Boite Chapeau showcase the Maison’s unique ability to reinvent heritage silhouettes with a more modern feel, making these handbags just as relevant and wearable today as they have always been, and always will be.

FEW THINGS WERE DROPPED AT THE PREVIEW GALA FOR SAN FRANCISCO’S “swellegant” Fall Show at Fort Mason, formerly known as the Fall Antiques Show. Certainly, names were dropped. With India Hicks, Tony Duquette, and Bunny Mellon all jetting in, there were plenty of references to rakes and royals among the regulars. Hints were definitely dropped, too: the gilded luxe of jewelry booths plying their troves of Van Cleef and Belperron compelled more than a few anniversary and birthday reminders … ahem. And jaws were dropped at a number of pieces on display: a Gustave Caillebotte landscape for $1 million plus and a staggering hand-painted screen depicting Mexico City in the 1730s were some of the many treasures that elicited an impromptu dental exam. The organizers deliberately dropped the word “Antiques” from the event title to update the show to include precious wares more recent than antique, although of equal standard for quality. The show, now in its 38th year, wants to keep up with the tastes of San Francisco’s spendy set, whose modern sensibility includes mid-century and mid-90s (when some of these new buyers were born, mon dieu!). The San Francisco Fall Show: Art-Antiques-Design is now its name, and nobody dropped the ball on that one.

THE MONACO YACHT SHOW IS RENOWned as the world’s most prestigious yacht show for luxury yachting. This annual event has showcased the finest superyacht lifestyle at Port Hercules in glamorous Monaco since 1991. This year, Monaco Yacht Show featured the most impressive fleet of superyachts in its history and attracted a record-breaking number of 600 companies from the leading superyacht builders, suppliers, designers, top brokers of yacht sales and charters, the most sought-after tenders and water toys, luxury cars, and helicopter and private jet manufacturers, each drawing their clients to the exhibits and contributing to the 31,565 visitors to the show. The 29th Monaco Yacht Show showcased 125 superyachts with an estimated total value of around 4 billion euros, the highest in the show’s history. The superyacht exhibition included 44 new models and 14 mega yachts over 70 meters in length, including two over 100 meters: the 111.5-meter TIS and 106.1-meter Amadea, both built by Lürssen. The 2019 MYS boasted yachts that were bigger and more amazing than ever, as well as a tendency towards “greener” yachts and enhanced performance in terms of technology, speed, and design. Each year, many newly delivered yachts launch at the show, many yachts for sale are unveiled at the event, and the world’s most respected shipyards display extraordinary one-off superyachts. For four days, yacht owners, yacht brokers, superyacht purchasers, or charterers — decision-makers in the yachting and luxury industries — mingled and networked at the Monaco Yacht Show on a global scale. This year, I visited TIS and Amadea, designed by Espen Oino, plus two elegant yachts for sale: Aurora Borealis (67.6 meters) and Sirona (56.4 meters).

DR. LISA KANG REVEALS TOP BEAUTY SECRETS Three gifts everyone deserves this holiday 60 60
Haute Beauty_11_02-edJRS.indd 60

WHEN FIRST MEETING DR. KANG, ONE NOTICES SOMEthing delightfully charming about her, something almost angelic. She doesn’t have the air of a renowned general surgeon, nor does Dr. Kang come across as one of the most knowledgeable and wellrespected doctors in the Medspa space—but she is. Dr. Lisa Kang was born in South Korea and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was only nine years old. She spoke no English, but she could play the piano. Her father was a neurosurgeon in Korea, and her mother had family in San Jose. So, they packed up the family and relocated to San Jose with her two older brothers and younger sister. Influenced by her father’s helping other people, Kang wanted to do the same. Being of service has been a part of her family’s ethos even before they arrived in the United States. Lisa grew up in a Christian family and seriously thought about becoming a missionary. Two of her uncles, one aunt, and a cousin were pastors. From the moment she arrived from Korea until she left for college, Kang played the piano at church every Sunday. Just months after being in elementary school, her music teacher asked her if she could play the cello. She spoke little English and responded, “Yes,” because she thought he had said, “piano.” He handed her a cello, and in weeks she mastered the instrument. English, on the other hand, took her a year to learn fluently.
Serenity Med Spa, Designed by Sophisticate Interiors
In college, Kang never considered any other path than medicine. She attended UC Berkeley with a double major in biochemistry and music. After graduating UC Berkeley, she went to medical school at George Washington University in Washington, DC for another four years. While in medical school, she thought she wanted to become a pediatrician because she loved children so much. But, when Lisa started her surgical rotations, she fell in love with the fast pace and complexity of the work that the surgeons did. Because of her understanding of music, her brain and hands were well trained for the grueling work mastered by surgeons. Kang focused on general surgery and completed her residency in general surgery at an affiliated UC Davis campus back in California. She practiced general surgery for five years there. After Kang graduated as an MD in surgery, she became a practicing general surgeon for PHOTO BY HQUALITY / SHUTTERSTOCK
another seven years, specializing in abdominal surgery which included working on organs. She loved the quick recovery and improvement of her clients after she operated on them. In January of 2006, Dr. Kang received a flyer from a laser company exhibiting at a tradeshow near her. She attended the event in February and demonstrations of the incredible power of the different lasers impressed her. The immediate results from lasers and cosmetic treatments like Botox® and fillers attracted her interest. Dr. Lisa Kang

Serenity MedSpa is one of the nation’s leading providers of thread lifting. Dr. Kang is very experienced with the thread lifting procedure and is well-versed with the various types of threads and techniques to achieve optimal results that not only last, but also look natural. EYE BAGS REMOVAL The only bags you should have are those packed for Europe. But many of us suffer from chronic baggage carried on our faces. Eye — and that’s the last thing you want to the world to think of you. Dr. Kang offers a clever solution and called Agnes RF. Agnes RF uses a patented micro-needle that emits radio-frequency energy with precision to effectively shrink eye bags as well as to tighten the loose skin around your eyes. Agnes RF is a quick, 15-minute procedure performed after the area has been numbed with a lidocaine injection. By reducing puffiness under the eyes and helping to smooth crow’s feet, these treatments will improve the overall appearance of your eyes.

FACETITE AND BODYTITE Just the word “TITE” makes our bodies feel better. The thought of being able to tighten the skin on our face and bodies is a gift in itself! Dr. Kang shares, “The FaceTite and BodyTite are minimally invasive skin tightening procedures that are the best on the market It uses radiofrequency energy delivered between two probes — one underneath the skin and one on top of the skin. I explain to the patients that it’s like ironing out their wrinkly skin. This device is especially effective in treating that ‘turkey-neck’ we all dread. FaceTite is perfect for busy professionals and those who are not ready to go under the knife, as it gives a ‘surgical-like’ result without the big incision and the downtime.

James Beard Award-winning, Michelin Star Chef Claude Le Tohic.
AS SAN FRANCISCANS WE ARE FORTUNATE — SPOILED, EVEN — TO LIVE, WORK, AND PLAY in a globally-recognized culinary arena. Home to nearly 880,000 people, stretching just under 47 square miles, The City is a veritable food mecca. In a word, San Franciscans are hungry: for culture, innovation, advancement, and, to fuel all this boundless ambition, food that is nothing short of exceptional. With more than 5,300 places to dine, San Francisco has more restaurants per capita than any other major city in the U.S. One could eat an entire day’s allotment of meals within a single city block. Our insatiable city boasts seemingly endless options. Whether you’re an entrepreneur or a restauranteur, it takes drive to survive. So, who better than James Beard Award-winning Michelin Star Chef Claude Le Tohic — the only active U.S. chef honored with the Meilleur Ouvrier de France award —to head up ONE65, the city’s most ambitious restaurant project in recent memory? “It’s like Formula One,” says Le Tohic, of the highly revered, peer-juried designation for which contests

are held only every four years. Also known as MOF, the Un des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France features a grueling cuisine-gastronomie division evaluated by a panel of more than 30 chef-judges with unnervingly precise standards. Since its debut in the 1920s, only 200 candidates have walked away successful. Le Tohic has had his eye on the prize since realizing at a young age that he wanted to be a chef. “I wanted to try it one time ... and I guess I didn’t need to go a second time,” he chuckles with relief. “But I never would have imagined that I would be here, right now, in San Francisco.” Le Tohic moved to the Bay Area three years ago to begin developing ONE65, a multi-level culinary concept housing four distinct modern French culinary dining experiences under one roof. Seated across from me today, Le Tohic is outfitted in a heather gray t-shirt with “DETROIT” printed across the back. It’s a rare moment he isn’t in his chef ’s whites—but if he were, it would sport the famous blue-white-red collar bestowed on chefs who achieve MOF status. Though it may be less well-known than the Michelin rating system here in the U.S., it testifies to his unending passion for perpetuating the tradition of French cuisine.

Patrons, too, personified the passion and artistry with their gowns and glittering masks. CoChair Elizabeth Birka-White wore an enchanting Givenchy gown, and Co-Chair Jane Mudge was stunning in Marchesa. Mary Poland, the beloved Opera Guild president, was a showstopper in Rubin Singer. Along with the classic gowns and merriment, the event raised funds to support the many opera education programs that support the students of San Francisco. 70

PREPPING FOR THE MOMENT Over in Darling Harbour where the Sofitel is readying their top floor champagne bar for the festival, hotel staff show up for work in formal wear to mark the occasion. In the hours before dusk with palpable excitement in the air well beyond what any New Year’s Eve can deliver, everybody makes their way to an observation post for the “aha moment” when the lights on switch is thrown at 6 p.m. Arguably, the best spot in town is The Guest House at Park Hyatt, right on the water’s edge with a private outdoor terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows for uninterrupted views of the Sydney Opera House on Bennelong Point promontory. At this opening party, champagne pops and even the passed canapes are shaped like little opera houses. WHY VIVID SYDNEY? Year after year since its inception in 2009, Vivid Sydney has continued its steady growth from the germ of an idea aimed at filling hotel rooms during a valley period. There’s also authentically local pub grub at watering holes like The Australian Hotel where the “Coat of Arms” specialty pizza features kangaroo and emu meat. The Rocks backs up to the pillars at the base of Harbour Bridge, the 1932 steel arch construction fondly known by Sydneysiders as “the coathanger.” Second only to Sydney Opera House as an iconic symbol, it tugs at the heart more than ever since BridgeClimb turned it into a one-of-a-kind experience.

WHERE TO STAY IN SYDNEY Book a suite on a high floor at the swish Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour, because service comes with a French accent and the freestanding bathtubs have unobstructed, jaw-dropping skyline views and Hermès bath amenities. Chill out at the infinity pool (more million-dollar vistas) and ditto for the rooftop cocktail lounge and modern gym. It’s a short walk over Pyrmont Bridge to the Barangaroo precinct and enjoy a car-free evening. Sydney’s newest haven of cosmopolitan waterfront dining comes with the option of indoor or outdoor dining. Try Cirrus, an elegant seafood restaurant in the space that Copenhagen’s NOMA selected for their popup Sydney sojourn. Anason’s kitchen talent shines with casual, authentic Turkish cuisine like the charcoal octopus leg with mastic and couscous. GETTING TO SYDNEY IN STYLE Unavoidably, one loses a day up in the clouds when crossing the International Date Line. So, spend the time indulging yourself on good Kiwi food, “Kia Ora” hospitality, and the carefully curated wines selected for in-flight palates. To stretch out in a proper bed that transforms itself from a roomy leather seat at the touch of a button, Air New Zealand via Auckland to Sydney is just the trick, right from SFO. An insider’s tip for those planning a meeting on arrival in Sydney: Have a bite, relax, and shower at the Air New Zealand Auckland International Lounge and touch down in Sydney ready to roll into the day.

You visit the island for day trips, gaze at its views of mainland Ireland, and cavort with the island’s preponderance of wallabies (yes, wallabies). Here, in musty casks rich with character, rest aging Irish whiskies. The other is a historic vineyard in the center of the most coveted land in Cognac, Borderies, which only makes up 5% of the region. A turreted chateau gazing over a green valley houses a family that has been producing Cognac brandies (aka eaux-de-vie) for five generations. The connection between the two? Lambay Irish Whiskey is finished in aromatic Camus Cognac casks on the magical island of Lambay. These two multigenerational families find themselves connected by a passion for quality spirits.

A romantic story, to be sure. But it’s not a marketing gimmick. Visiting both locales, I dined in these families’ homes, heard about their history firsthand, looked through photos of the generations, and gained a profound sense of place that infiltrates both spirits. Cyrul Camus and Alexander Baring, of the fascinating Bearing family (in the 1950s, Rupert Bearing brought wallabies to the island from the Dublin Zoo), wanted an affordable Irish whiskey with character. He created Lambay, which is distilled by an independent distillery in West Cork, although the plan is to also eventually build a small distillery on the island. Cyril, who comes from one of Cognac’s greatest independent brandy houses since 1863, wanted to award-winning whiskies, marrying complexity with an accessible price ($35-50 per bottle). With its chalky clay and limestone soil, Borderies offers Cognac’s most delicate terroir, growing grapes that express fresh, floral minerality and refined fruit. But you’ll find very little Borderies, if any, in most Cognac brands. It’s one of Camus’ rare qualities: even

SHOWTIME IN DOWNTOWN NAPA New wine tasting rooms and restaurants are ready for their close-up.
WHEN I TRAVELED FROM SAN FRANCISCO TO STAY IN downtown Napa for the 2014 Napa Valley Film Festival, downtown Napa was a lackluster destination, despite a handful of amazing restaurants. Look at downtown Napa now! Chic hotels, swank tasting rooms, upscale rooftop bars, new, delectable eateries, and a vibrant night scene have revitalized this once-sleepy area which was rarely noticed by visitors heading up valley to Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga. With the ninth annual Napa Valley Film Festival, a cultural celebration immersed in the art of film, food, and wine, presented by the non-profit organization Cinema Napa Valley, taking center stage throughout Napa Valley from Nov. 13-17, I’d like to share with you my playlist for downtown Napa. Stay at the Archer Hotel Napa on bustling First Street, where you can relax in front of a firepit at the fashionable Sky & Vine Rooftop Bar on a chilly, fall night and dine at Charlie Palmer Steak on the lobby level. Literary for the Library: Little Women by Louisa May Alcott A literary agent friend in New York reminded us that the newest Little Women movie has a Christmas release date, so the publishing industry is awash in renewed interest in Louisa May Alcott’s timeless novel of four sisters. s sees Mrs. March as Laura Dern, Susan Sarandon, Mary Astor, or your own creation entirely? Quick and Quixotic: New Micro: Exceptionally Short Fiction Collection A recent movement in literary circles is flash and micro fiction. Does it reflect our shortening attention spans? Size absolutely matters in this hot genre. This seminal collection of the best 300-word-or-less stories should be stuffed in every stocking, read aloud at every holiday party, and brought along on every sailing excursion. You will be astounded at how full and gripping these tiny tales can be. Written by the likes of Joyce Carol Oates and 100 Word Story co-founder Grant Faulkner, and edited by James Thomas and Robert Scotellaro, New Micro helps to both define and solidify
the mightiness of micro. Romance for Winter Getaways: Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory Oakland-based writer Jasmine Guillory is the belle of the bibliophile ball lately, particularly with a major announcement from Reese Witherspoon’s book club choosing Guillory’s The Proposal as the first romance ever included. As you know, an innocent trip to “Merrie Olde England” can always take an indelicate turn. Royal Holiday tells the story of an unattached mother traveling across the pond with her daughter. Will mum (inspired by Meghan Markle’s mother) say pip-pip to an affair with a palace private secretary? Find out as you turn the pages somewhere over the Seychelles and thank us later.

SONOMA COUNTY WINE AUCTION BREAKS RECORD The 2019 Sonoma County Wine Auction featured once-in-a-lifetime lots and united the region’s most renowned vintners, winemakers, chefs, and generous bidders to raise a record-breaking $6.1 million for local charities. Christopher Jackson, of Jackson Family Wines, and Gina Gallo, of E. & J. Gallo Winery, co-chaired this year’s exclusive, 3-day event. Festivities kicked off Thursday, September 19th, with the best party ever, hosted with the Cline Family at Jacuzzi Family Vineyards. Friday meant sumptuous vintner dinners sprinkled throughout the region, including a bespoke, 4-course experience at Saint Joseph’s Arts Society in San Francisco. Each course was paired with Jackson Family and Hamel Family wines. On Saturday, more than 400 guests gathered in the warm sunshine for the main event at Saralee’s Vineyard on the La Crema Estate. Following a beautiful food and wine reception, the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts Mariachi Ensemble serenaded guests on their way to the auction tent. There, they bid on 40 lots comprising world travel, musical experiences, and exceptional food and wine. One lot – lucky #13 – featured a 378-bottle Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varietals collection that went for an historic $520,000. A new pour for tasting.

BOISSET BOND BIRTHDAY BASH Jean-Charles Boisset’s 50th birthday shook and stirred Napa Valley with a James Bond-themed bash at Raymond Vineyards. Longtime friends and wine industry colleagues arrived attired as heroes and villains, with Boisset self-styled in the role of Agent 69, the year of his birth. The ebullient Boisset poured bottles of bubbly while swinging from a trapeze, glammed as a bewigged burlesque in a giant champagne coupe, and dazzled in an action-adventure skyfall defeating a succession of gamines, gunslingers, and Goldfingers. Experiences on overload included caviar and oysters, sushi served atop a nude sylph, and delicacies from Brazil, India, and France. A STATE-OF-ART QUALITY HOME ON SAN FRANCISCO BAY Custom Designed for Doug and Susan Norby
IN 2010, DOUG NORBY AND HIS WIFE SUSAN PURCHASED THE BELVEDERE HOME OF SAN FRANCISCO’S renowned chef and restaurant owner Cecelia Chiang. They tried to preserve part of the home when renovating it, but mixing the new with the old proved challenging. In the end, they decided to tear it down and construct a brand-new home. The contemporary design focused on bringing the beautiful vistas into the home with pocket doors disappearing into the walls to bring indoors and outdoors together. This Belvedere waterfront home was custom designed for the owner and built by Red Horse Construction, known for their top luxury homes in the San Francisco Bay Area. Completed in 2014, this state-of-the-art, extremely high-quality residence features four bedrooms, three full baths, two half-baths, five fireplaces, a new boat dock, open floor plan of living and dining areas, and gourmet kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances. A spacious entertainment deck overlooks San Francisco Bay. The front courtyard entry boasts a water feature, fruit trees, lush landscaping, and fully fenced garden for privacy. All the main rooms open to panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, city skyline, Sausalito, Strawberry Shores, and Mt. Tamalpais. The home has radiant floor heating, tankless hot water heaters, solar, a Sound Vision sound system, and remote controlled window shades in all rooms, and a spacious 2-car garage with access door and half-bath for the gardener. Located on the flat and wide West Shore Road, residents have easy access to Tiburon Boulevard, downtown, the ferry, and Highway 101. Located within the award-winning Tiburon School District, this property is truly a masterpiece in a magnificent location.

Vienna Opera house
2019 EUROPEAN CULTURAL PRIZE THE EUROPEAN CULTURAL PRIZE IS ONE OF THE MOST important awards in Europe. The event took place on October 20 on the 150th anniversary of the opera house of the Vienna State Opera. Carlo Ponti Jr., Dr. Hermann Bühlbecker, and Sophia Loren
Honorees this year included composer and opera patron Gordon Getty, film icon Sophia Loren, British designer Vivienne Westwood, opera singers Nina Stemme, Olga Peretyatko, Thomas Hampson and Rene Pape, conductor Christian Thielemann, and the environmental initiative R20 Austrian World Summit co-founder Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Young Talent Award went to 14-year-old composer/violinst/pianist Alma Deutscher. The evening started with a cocktail reception, followed by the award ceremony and a concert at the opulent Vienna Opera House. A lavish gala dinner after the award ceremony was held in the magnificent Gustav Mahler-Saal. Legendary film star Sophia Loren was introduced and presented the award by her son Carlo Ponti, Jr., an accomplished artist in his own right. He founded the Los Angeles Virtuosi Orchestra in 2013 as a non-profit organization. All net income from their performances fund music education programs in Los Angeles Schools. Violinist Daniel Hope presented the award to composer Gordon Getty. The Vienna State Opera Orchestra, conducted by Australian conductor Simone Young, performed Getty’s “The Fiddler of Ballykeel” at the award ceremony. Getty’s compositions have been performed in other venues, such as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Vienna’s Brahmssaal, and Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall and Bolshoi Theatre, as well as at the Aspen, Spoleto, and Bad Kissingen Festivals.
