for a Night on the Stage
Looking for a fantastic way to kick start the holidays? How about an extravagant dinner inside one of San Francisco’s most historic buildings, the War Memorial Opera House? The San Francisco Opera Guild invites you to An Evening on the Stage. Kim Dempster and Linle Froeb are co-chairs of the event which takes place on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2018. The evening begins in the lobby of the Opera House promptly at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m. the exclusive group of 250 guests will head inside the auditorium to enjoy a lavish dinner on the stage. Event stylist J. Riccardo Benavides will wave his magic wand and transform the stage into an opulent setting. McCalls Catering is cooking up a multi-course meal that is sure to impress. During the dinner, two of San Francisco Opera’s most generous donors, John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn, will be honored with the 2018 Crescendo Award. Afterward, the event will transform into a rocking dance party with tunes by Notorious. This is a night to remember and an exclusive event that should not be missed!

HE HOLIDAY SEASON IS HERE AND WE hope you consider this philanthropy issue our gift to you! We are honored to feature H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco as our cover story. I attended Prince Albert
II Foundation’s Monte Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean on September 26 and witnessed the extreme generosity that raised $25 million for environmental preservation projects. I read all the booklets in my gala packet and was impressed by H.S.H. Prince Albert II’s dedicated efforts to this critical mission. His lifelong passion for the cause touched me and I wrote my recap of the event the moment I returned to my hotel room from the gala—at 6 a.m.! A huge thanks to the super-efficient assistance from the Palace’s press office who provided additional information and photos. We are excited to report on our local queen of philanthropy, Dede Wilsey, whose generous donations and tireless fundraising efforts are well-known in the Bay Area. Without her, we wouldn’t be enjoying the opera, the symphony, the ballet, and the museums in San Francisco. Speaking of fundraising, we thank you for your aid of the Rain Forest Trust and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. We encourage you to attend the San Francisco Opera Guild’s Evening on the Stage. It takes place on November 28 and helps fund the Opera’s education and community outreach programs. I attended the Monaco Yacht Show and got up close and personal with Peter Lürssen. His family’s 140-year-old shipbuilding dynasty has crafted the largest yachts in the world and earned him the title of ‘King of the Superyacht.’ Plus, Haute Yachts features interesting new creations—and our exclusive Dior fashion spread is meant to inspire wanderlust. We’d love for you to meet our new ambassador, Lydia Graham, who reports on health and wellness matters. Graham is a board member of the Buck Institute for Aging and is passionate about wellness. Finally, please enjoy our Scene pages and email us the holiday events you want to share in a future edition. Happy holidays and cheers to a luxury lifestyle with purpose, Olivia

THIS UP & COMING POLITICIAN WILL CHANGE SAN FRANCISCO All eyes are on the upcoming November election where the hottest race is for Supervisor of District Two. Three candidates—Nick Josefowitz, Catherine Stefani (the current supervisor), and Schuyler Hudak—are duking it out for a chance to control the Marina, Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow, Laurel Heights, part of Russian Hill, and the Presidio. It’s a position that Hudak is passionately poised to take on. At a time when City Hall is in desperate need of fresh faces, new ideas, and youthful enthusiasm, Hudak is a beacon on the horizon foreseeing a better San Francisco.

HOTEL NIA IS AN OASIS IN THE MIDDLE OF SILICON VALLEY Step into the high-ceilinged lobby at the Hotel Nia, and an instant calm fills the air. Beyond the large glass doors is an outdoor space that brings to mind a modern Mediterranean courtyard. Although Nia is directly next to the 101 in an undeveloped former swampland, the upscale hotel is a far cry from its direct surroundings. The six-month-old, 11-story, 250-room hotel is filled with custommade furniture designed by McCartan. The Nia’s piece de resistance is its ample outdoor space—the only word that can be used to describe this massive lawn, patio, and pool area is an oasis.
JEFFREY OPENS FIRST WEST COAST BOUTIQUE IN PALO ALTO The fashion industry is smitten with Silicon Valley. Case in point: the debut of Jeffrey, a luxury designer boutique at the Stanford Shopping Center. It’s the first West Coast storefront for Jeffrey Kalinsky, the beloved retailer whose portfolio includes Jeffrey New York and Jeffrey Atlanta. With 12,000-square feet of minimalist decor, the gorgeous shop feels like a massive gallery. The beautiful selection of clothing is displayed as artwork. International men’s and women’s collections from Celine, Gucci, Christian Dior, Prada, Rick Owens, Balenciaga, and more are featured throughout. YOU NEED TO DINE AT SACRAMENTO STREET NEWCOMER SORREL From restaurateur Colby Heiman and chef Alex Hong, Sorrel is Sacramento Street’s newest dining destination. Like the Laurel Heights neighborhood where its located, Sorrel is a quiet, intimate, and relaxed place. There’s no hustle and bustle or pomp and circumstance. Sorrel is a restaurant where, after a long day or lousy flight, one can sit back and unwind with a glass of sparkling Gamay and bowl of risotto.

THE AVERY BRINGS LUXURY LIVING TO NEW HEIGHTS It seems like every week a new luxury high-rise opens in San Francisco. The latest to hit the block? The Avery, an upcoming condominium development from Related California. The Avery is located in an entirely new neighborhood, the East Cut. The micro hood is bordered by the Embarcadero, 2nd Street, the freeway that leads to the Bay Bridge, and Mission Street. Designed by Pritzker award-winning architect and designer Rem Koolhaas’ Office of Metropolitan Architecture, the 56-story exterior has impressive glass walls. It’s the firm’s first-ever high-rise in San Francisco, and the building is expected to receive LEED Gold Certification.

10 OUTRAGEOUS SUPERYACHTS FROM THE FUTURE SEPTEMBER HAS COME AND GONE AND WITH IT THE MONACO YACHT SHOW. THIS IS WHERE THE WORLD’S BEST YACHT DESIGNERS GET A CHANCE to put forward some of the dynamic concepts to date. But it’s not always about the biggest or the fastest. It’s about raising the bar, improving creativity and pushing boundaries. In that vein, Haute Living takes a look at 10 superyacht concepts that may not be as far off into the future as you think.
SHADDAI
Tower of Babel, maybe? Giza Pyramids, anyone? Call it unique or visionary, but you have to call it something. Either way, no words can do it justice. Shaddai, a 152.4m, 38m-tall superyacht is futurism of the tallest order—pun intended. The beach club is perched 38m above the aft deck via a stunning scenographic infinity pool. Gabriele Teruzzi’s design doesn’t just offer panoramic views, it makes you omniscient. Hence, the Hebrew moniker, Shaddai. Shaddai: Gabriele Teruzzi Yachts & Design
GHOST
From the designer of Black Pearl, the world’s largest DynaRig sailing yacht, comes the deconstructed 144m M/Y Ghost concept. Ken Freivokh Design brings modern minimalism and flexibility where a tremendously rigid frame system takes care of torsional rigidity. Sliding helipad platforms, opening skylights, a telescopic signal mast forward, a glass pool, and a gym are just some of its features. Both hydro and aerodynamic, Ghost is designed for transparency and optimal underwater efficiency. Balconies and flying bridges link various spaces throughout the vessel, allowing a revolutionary lightsensitive film embedded within the skin of the yacht to maximize natural light.

L’AMAGE
At 190m LOA, L’Amage is one of the world’s most advanced superyacht projects, not only because it dwarfs the 180.61m Azzam, but it utilizes diesel engines and gas turbine (CODAG) technology, generating 95000hp at a maximum speed of 32 knots. Designed by Hamid Bekradi, director of design at HBD Studios, L’Amage has a beam of 28.6m, accommodates 28, has 14 staterooms, an owner’s apartment and fits a crew of 70. Elegant and sober, L’Amage is the first superyacht to incorporate Kymeta® flat panel satellite technology, completely replacing satellite domes. Oh, did I mention the outdoor fire pit, an extended transom with three sliding piers and a travel range of 6,000 nautical miles? L’Amage: HBD Design Studios
PROJECT L3
From the collaborative vision of BMT Nigel Gee and McPherson Yacht Design comes Project L3, an 85m refreshingly luxurious take on catamaran yacht design. With an overall length of 85m, the catamaran offers volume more akin to a 100110m monohull. Such space allows for entertainment and living areas similar to flamboyant land-based architecture and includes some really cool, unique features.
Galaxy of Happiness: Thiery Ameller Photography
The sundeck sports an open-air fire pit surrounded by generous loungers that provide stunning views of the giant drop-down cinema screen, a feature that is sure to be the main focus of evening entertainment. The wide beam allows for storage of an offshore racing cat and a two-man seaplane. Once deployed, these can be moored against a number of fold-down extendable beach decks giving easy access to the water.
GALAXY OF HAPPINESS
This 53m trimaran is arguably the most futurist and forward-thinking of all designs, not least because it literally looks like a spaceship: Two outrigger hulls are used for increased stability and uses almost half the energy of a monohull. Galaxy of Happiness is powered by twin 2,600hp MTU diesel engines backed up by 120k W electric engines, pushing Galaxy to a top speed of 30 knots.
In true Galaxy fashion, sofas, sun pads, a petite sundeck, a superyacht spa pool, and LCD glass windows make up for not having an upper deck. But it is Galaxy’s combined fuel efficiency and speed that will take yacht owners and designers far into the future. Galaxy was designed by Jean-Jacques Coste of Blue Coast Yachts, partners with Latitude Yachts.

LuxuryCORNER Haute Yacht TABOO
Is it me, or do next-generation explorers have one for the books with Gill Schmid and Tim Dempers’ 90m superyacht concept, Taboo? From polar escapades to wild ocean adventures, Taboo has enough space for helicopters, super and amphibious cars, a submarine, and—wait for it—a hot air balloon. One-way extensive glass and panoramic views are the perfect complements for 26 guests and 40 crew members enjoying a dip in the superyacht pool after working out in the gym. Talk about breaking the ice!
Taboo: Gill Schmid Design
PROJECT CHOICE Designed by Feadship, the 74.5m Project Choice burns almost 30 percent less fuel, has a two-person drone and a motioncompensation pool using magnetic levitation to thwart rolling motion. The mothership has its own electric propulsion package with 24.5m tenders at either side. Choice accesses real-time online data to optimize client experiences and boasts an amphibious beachhouse apartment, two Jacuzzis, two double suites, a single cabin, and a lounge. Choice’s intervention is that clients have a wealth of options before, during and after the building process, making the onboard experience unbelievable. ERA 80: Ricky Smith Designs
ERA 80 “Brokers advised me to ignore convention and to stop trying to please naval architects by presenting conservative concepts. I was advised to show something progressive and innovative,” said designer Ricky Smith. And that is exactly what we get from his 80m über-aerodynamic explorer superyacht, ERA 80. Designed to reduce drag, and in collaboration with Stuart Friezer Marine Naval Architects, ERA 80 has a covered bow. Immediately recognizable by its smooth, non-faceted superstructure, the ERA 80 concept is about taking advantage of both space and privacy. The Smith project features a 13m bean that allows for a Bell 427 or Eurocopter EC145, an owner’s suite on the upper deck, a VIP and four-guest suite, accommodates 20 and a total crew of 24.
Project EGO: Giamboi Designs
PROJECT EGO With three decks, 12.8m wide, and 36m in length, Project EGO is the multihull catamaran superyacht brainchild of Mauro Giamboi of Giamboi Designs. Recall that it was Giamboi who introduced Quaranta to the world in 2013. EGO is lightweight and fuelefficient with two bows able to cut through waves with ease. EGO has a full beam salon and two main cabins on the main deck. Two more guest cabins are located in the portside hull. The starboard hull hosts six crew members comfortably.

WHETHER YOU’RE OPENING A BOTTLE OF KOSTA BROWNE PINOT NOIR TO ENJOY WITH Thanksgiving dinner, stirring up mezcal old-fashioneds for a Hanukkah cocktail party, or toasting with Dom Perignon on New Year’s Eve, the holidays are all about imbibing. However, knowing what to pour can be tricky. Plus, selecting the perfect spirit to impress your scotch-loving brother-in-law on Christmas can be overwhelming. Luckily, there are plenty of beverage professionals in San Francisco. We’ve turned to some of our favorite sommeliers and bartenders from iconic establishments like the Mission’s 15-year old watering hole, Elixir, and chef Dominique Crenn’s newest hot spot, Bar Crenn, to get the 411 on what you should be drinking this holiday season. Here’s what the mixologists and wine folk recommend.

On his wishlist: Cru Beaujolais and Calvados would be just fine. Happening for the holidays: We do lots of local citrus-focused drinks at Meadowood because that’s what’s in season during the holidays. Look for Meyer lemon, rang-

NICOLAS TORRES Job title: Bar director at True Laurel Favorite holiday beverage: I can only drink one cup, but I do enjoy making eggnog for the family. On his wishlist: There’s plenty of booze in my life, but if anyone has a mid-70s unopened bottle of Cynar that would be rad because my cats broke mine. Maison Corbeaux
Job title: Director of marketing at Maison Corbeaux Favorite holiday beverage: Pitchers of Negroni Sbagliato! For me, the perfect holiday cocktail has got to sparkle, has plenty to share, and is easy to make. This lower octane and decidedly more festive version of a Negroni is an Italian aperitivo classic along the lines of the Aperol Spritz and Americano. Hostess gift recommendation: When you work for one of the best bottle shops in San Francisco, it’s too easy to grab a bottle and present it as a gift. My friends know my background in mixology and expect more than just an awesome bottle, so I like to get creative with a bottled cocktail. I choose something spirit forward so that it will be shelf stable and mix a large batch and bottle it in cute, small swing top bottles I get from the Container Store. MAMA KNOWS BEST Patterson Brenner with her baby boy, Beau
On her wishlist: One thing that motherhood has awakened in me is craving for dark beer. I’m loving black lagers like Death & Taxes from Moonlight Brewing Co. or the insanely delicious and unique Oyster Stout from Henhouse Brewing. Happening for the holidays: Our holiday plans include our regular free tastings on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 5-7 p.m. with the addition of Saturday afternoon tastings from 3-5 p.m. We’ll be collaborating with our in-house butcher and deli, Aveda-
H. JOSEPH EHRMANN Job title: Owner of Elixir Favorite holiday beverage: I’m an eggnog freak. I love its versatility, and we make so much of it at the bar (fresh batches every day) that I am always trying new combinations of spirits. A classic blend of Jamaican rum and cognac is my favorite. There are so many more Jamaican rums available now than there used to be. Try Plantation Xaymaca and Bache Gabrielsen American Oak and garnish with a flamed orange twist. Hostess gift recommendation: One of my Elixir Private Selection barrels of bourbon. I currently have six different private barrels in stock, and we have a new barrel of Maker’s Mark Private Selection launching at our 15th anniversary party, so that will be the spirit of the season for me. It has amazing chocolate and coffee notes. On his wishlist: Compass Box Flaming Heart 6th Edition (blended single-malt Scotch whisky) is launching now, and I can’t wait to taste it. Happening for the holidays: We’ll be running our fall cocktail menu right through the holidays, but we’ll have our traditional house-made eggnog, Hot Buttered Rum, and spiced cider throughout December. And we’ll be doing fresh Tom and Jerry batter daily from the 10th through Christmas Day.

no’s, for fun events like whole animal butchery classes and food pairings.
MARK BRIGHT Job title: Partner and wine director at Saison Hospitality Favorite holiday beverage: I personally love Champagne from Frederic Savart, Ulysse Collin, or Krug. Anything Krug is always preferred. Hostess gift recommendation: It depends on who I am seeing. If it is other wine friends, I will bring Champagne, and if it is my family, then I will bring whisky— usually Yamazaki Japanese Whisky. On his wishlist: I could use a new Champagne saber, as mine is pretty knocked up. Happening for the holidays: Saison’s cocktail program is seasonal, so it is always evolving. We are offering a Special Louis Xlll dinner experience that allows our guests to go home with a full-size decanter personalized with their name etched in and a mini-bottle, also Baccarat. It is one of the cutest little bottles out there.
COURTNEY OLSON Job title: Beverage director at Crenn Dining Group Favorite holiday beverage: Is it wrong that my answers for each of these questions are Champagne?! Ok, this one is Rosé Champagne. For a go-to holiday treat (indeed a treat if you can find it) Vouette & Sorbée Rosé de Saignée. With a vibrant, deep coppery hue that draws you in and a smoky berry and flinty nose, this extrabrut has a well-balanced length with concentration and depth on the palate. While fascinating alone, it’s spectacular with slow-roasted lobster mushroom risotto. Hostess gift recommendation: Bouzy! Champagne from Pierre Paillard, located in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, is notable for its power and structure. Paillard blends a bit of Chardonnay which brings a racy lift to the richness of the Pinot Noir. On her wishlist: A set of Dorothy Thorpe mid-century cocktail stems. A glassware designer not manufacturer, Thorpe created timeless collectibles whose vessels make juice a joy to drink from. Happening for the holidays: At Bar Crenn, I’ve created a low-fi cocktail called the Buddha’s Cider. Inspired from Chef Crenn’s northern French roots, this combines Eric Bordelet’s Authentique cider from Normandy, LeMorton Pommeau de Bar Crenn

called Buddha’s Hand.
TREVIN HUTCHINS Job title: Beverage director for the soon-to-be-opened One65 Bar & Lounge Favorite holiday beverage: Holidays in my house are about pulling out the unique recipes that you only do once or twice a year. I’m making Café Brûlot Diabolique; it’s a classic New Orleans cocktail from Antione’s Restaurant in the French Quarter. The cocktail involves flambéing warming spices like cloves, cinnamon, and citrus peels with cognac and then finishing it with black coffee. It’s a spectacle. Hostess gift recommendation: Forgoing the ubiquitous bottle of whiskey, my go-to liquor is rum. For the bottle to impress, I’m bringing Appleton Joy 25 Year blend. It’s a special edition rum from master blender Joy Spence to commemorate her 20th anniversary. She was the world’s first female master blender; that’s something to celebrate. However, if I’m feeling cheeky, I’ll bring a bottle of Baileys. I’ll deny this in the future but Baileys is my guilty pleasure. On his wishlist: Vintage Chartreuse, please! Happening for the holidays: I’m offering our version of the Café Brûlot Diabolique as an off-menu cocktail served in the One65 lounge and O’. It will feature a blend of Plantation Rum and Pierre Ferrand Cognac with chicory coffee. We even have the vintage-style mugs that it was served in at Antione’s.

All of this earthy campfire-inspired cookery adds to Angler’s charm—it goes with the cabin and wildlife decor. Taxidermy, exposed bricks, industrial beams, mounted fish, and polished wood feature throughout the space. With dried herbs hanging from the rafters, baskets overflowing with citrus, and urns filled with wildflowers, the open kitchen is a focal point in the main dining room. The second smaller dining room has a clublike atmosphere. A growling black bear greets diners and game heads, including a stag with large antlers that Skenes hunted, fill the walls. Despite the masculine vibe, Angler somehow works. It’s welcoming and cozy with delicious, indulgent food, stellar wine—Bright’s list includes a wide selection of Burgundy and benchmark producers from Northern California—and craft cocktails. If you come for just one item, make it the caviar, which is served in an old-fashioned candy bowl and paired with plantain waffles and house-made butter. It’s wildly decadent, but insanely good. Another restaurant that has been generating a lot of attention is Prairie in the Mission District. Prairie is the first eatery from Anthony Strong, who spent 11 years as executive chef of

HauteCUISINE and at Prairie he’s giving it a personal spin—creating what he calls “new school” Italian food. Prairie’s pantry is stocked with international ingredients that Strong incorporates into traditional Italian dishes. For example, instead of wrapping dried fruit, like figs or dates, with prosciutto, as is common in Italian restaurants, Strong wraps mochi—Japanese rice cakes—with guanciale then drizzles it with aged balsamic vinegar. The mochi takes on a surprisingly mozzarella-like texture, and the resulting appetizer is thought-provoking and interesting. The housemade buttered tagliatelle is toothsome and addictive especially once tossed with the juicy chicken sugo. Strong imported a charcoal grill from Spain and uses this to char red peppers, flame grill anchovy-rubbed lamb chops, and sear octopus. The food is meant to be shared and Strong hopes to encourage a party-like vibe. The waiters don’t take diner’s orders. Instead, guests fill out a form noting what dishes they would like to try. MORE EXCITING OPENINGS The following restaurants are expected to open sometime later this winter. VERJUS Quince and Cotogna lovers take note. Michael and Lindsay Tusk’s third restaurant, Verjus, will be a casual wine bar at the bottom of the Transamerica Pyramid. Instead of focusing on Italy like their other two eateries, Verjus will highlight their love affair with France. Diners can expect quintessential French food like frog legs, pate en croute, and housemade charcuterie. Verjus will have retail offerings where patrons can shop for wine and artisanal wares that the Tusks have discovered on their global adventures. COW MARLOWE Anna Weinberg and James Nicholas’ Big Night Group is finally bringing their lively restaurant scene to the Marina—with Cow Marlowe. The restaurant will be modeled after SoMa’s wildly popular Marlowe and will feature chef Jennifer Puccio’s American bistro favorites. Diners can look forward to devouring her burger, which has a cult following, and other dishes that will be available only at this new location. TRAILBLAZER TAVERN

Even with overnight delivery, shopping for holiday gifts can be a daunting: what to get the assistant, dog-walker, sister-in-law, and son’s new girlfriend? One easy way to plan your shopping list is to consult an expert like Sherri McMullen of the 11-year old Oakland boutique, McMullen. We have some extraordinary pieces from Ariel Gordon jewelry that include custom hand engraved rings and pendants,” Sherri says. “We offer a nameplate necklace, signet ring, or stud earrings customized with a loved one’s initials or you can engrave each piece with a unique saying. Our handbags all have striking design features that are hard to find. Take for example the Ulla Johnson hand crochet Barranco Tote. We also have some Scandinavian hand woven pullover sweaters by Ganni that are perfect for the holidays and fall weather.” The new McMullen also has more space for items like home goods, so you can also find handwoven baskets and Eithopian throws. YOUNG, WILD, & FREE
FOR THE WOMAN WHO WANTS TO MAKE HER MARK IN THE WORLD, in comes Dior with its Cruise 2019 Collection which was designed by the house’s first female artistic director, Maria Grazia Chiuri. She drew inspiration from the escaramuzas—traditional Mexican female horse riders—who participate in the charreada—Mexico’s version of an equestrian performance, showcasing impressive and challenging routines to the crowd. Using rich materials, such as toile de Jouy, lace, knits, tulle, and Japanese cotton, the collection emphasizes the intersection of two worlds, both equally important in the world of Dior: deep-rooted tradition and liberating freedom. The heroine wears full skirts with waist-cinching belts and fitted jackets, which exude her femininity and her strength simultaneously. The iconic Dior Saddle Bag reappears in the story, serving as the perfect accessory for the heroine along with her chic and practical combat boots, allowing her to blaze a trail forward for the next generation to come, rather than stand still and wait for someone else to do so. While remembering the legacy of those that came before her and embracing the possibilities of her bright and bold future, she is not a rule-breaker; rather, she is a rule-maker. She is young, wild, and free. She is the Dior woman. H.S.H. PRINCE ALBERT II OF MONACO IS COMMITTED TO PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE OCEAN BY KATIE SWEENEY WITH OLIVIA HSU DECKER
GROWING UP AT THE PRINCE’S PALACE OF MONACO, THERE IS ONE THING THAT REMAINED CONSTANT IN HIS Serene Highness, Prince Albert II’s life: the brilliant blue Mediterranean Sea. Every morning when he would wake up, the azure waters would be there. Every night when he would go to bed, the sea’s waves could be heard. The Mediterranean has served as a backdrop to his entire life, so it’s no wonder that the Prince would be a passionate advocate for its conservation. Preserving the environment is also something that runs in his blood. 250

The decor consisted of colorful sea life videos projected onto the majestic Belle Epoque Opera Garnier building, and enormous light fixtures resembling sea creatures hung from the 40-foot ceilings. Andy Boose/AAB Production and Stefan Santoni/TUFF Consult produced the fantastic décor, sound, light, video, creative design, and technical production. Over 700 supporters in gowns and black-tie attended this glamorous event to raise funds for the preservation of the ocean. The live auction, conducted by Simon de Pury, featured 47 well-curated lots offering once-in-a-lifetime opportunities like to be the personal guest of H.S.H. SAN FRANCISCO’S HARDWORKING PHILANTHROPIC FORCE, DEDE WILSEY, WILL NEVER STOP FUNDRAISING BY KATIE SWEENEY PHOTOS BY DREW ALTIZER
“I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY FRIENDS THAT PEOPLE THINK THAT I’M INTIMIDATING AND I THOUGHT IT WAS THE FUNNIEST thing I’ve ever heard,” Dede Wilsey says. She’s sitting in an armchair in her Napa Valley home—the place where she is most happy—her 10-year old Maltese at her feet. Wilsey and I are 30 minutes into an hour-long conversation, and I couldn’t agree with her more. Although I was incredibly intimidated by the thought of interviewing San Francisco’s reigning queen of philanthropy, any fears melted away within seconds of meeting her. A naturally gracious hostess, Wilsey has an uncanny ability to make anyone feel comfortable. This isn’t the first reporter she’s entertained, and it’s probably not the last—but she is so candid I feel as if I’m chatting with one of my oldest girlfriends. There is an energetic, youthfulness to Wilsey and when she speaks, her tone is both excited and astute. Everything she says feels like it could be a secret—and it’s utterly captivating. Another aspect of her charm? The fact that in the Bay Area no female is as graceful and giving as Wilsey. Contributing to the causes she believes in is her job and one that she takes very seriously. Although the exact amount she has donated over the years is not known, Wilsey helped bring in more than $200 million to rebuild the de Young Museum. She raised $3.2 million for the Immaculate Conception Academy, and she led fundraising that bankrolled $16.6 million for Grace Cathedral. She’s given generously to the the UCSF medical facilities, San Francisco Ballet and San Francisco Opera. In 2016 she contributed to more than 380 different charities. To Wilsey, this is all in a day’s work and not something she brags about. Instead, she moves the discussion to focus on her family.

was just visiting my one son who lives in Austria, now,” she mentions casually. Wilsey is referring to her elder son, Trevor Traina, who moved to Vienna earlier this year to become the United States Ambassador. Traina was nominated by President Trump and approved by the Senate, before he moved his wife, Alex-
is Swanson Traina, and two children, to Europe. Her son’s position is a full circle moment for Wilsey: from 1975 to 1977 her father, Wiley T. Buchanan Jr., served the same role under President Gerald Ford. “It was great because he’s now the ambassador and my father was ambassador to Austria, also. It is so much fun to have that deja vu,” Wilsey says. Traina is living in the exact house that Wilsey’s father resided in and much remains the same—including the exterior, gardens, and grand staircase. “Inside where the staircase is—I looked over there and I sort of expected my parents to come down the stairs. Then I have to pinch myself and think no, it’s somebody else. It is a peculiar feeling to think it’s not your father, it’s your son.”
Wilsey and the former director of FAMSF Max Hollein at the 2018 Bouquets to Art Gala at the de Young museum
Times have changed since Buchanan was the ambassador and this is apparent in the security team that accompanies Traina and his family everywhere in Austria. He has two guards with him at all times. A car with machine gun-armed men follows his armored vehicle. “The difference is that the world is so much more complicated. My father didn’t have that kind of security. The car looks like something out of a movie,” Wilsey explains. “My ten-year-old grandson thinks it’s so cool. Trevor said to me, ‘Mom, you have to sit here. I have to sit here,

and we can’t change places. It’s not random. I must sit here behind this guard.’ And I said, ‘Fine. I don’t care. Great.’” Traina’s security detail isn’t for every ambassador, only the Israeli Ambassador and the American Ambassador require the extra protection because of ISIS. “That’s scary. I mean you don’t want them to blow your child up,” Wilsey says seriously. But that doesn’t mean Wilsey, or any of her family, will hide. “It’s important for my children and my grandchildren to see what’s become of the world and work to make it better. Make peace for everybody. And make this a better place and respect the climate and respect people from all countries and understand that unless they work hard to make it better, we’re in real trouble,” she says sounding more like a politician than a grandmother. Wilsey’s pride, admiration, and love for her family are evident and strong. You get the sense that she would take a bullet for her son if FAMILY PHOTO COURTESY OF DEDE WILSEY
need be. Her fierce commitment and intense loyalty can also be seen in her tireless philanthropic works. Wilsey’s legacy is the de Young Museum. After it was damaged by the 1989 earthquake, Wilsey single-handedly raised the necessary funds to build a new museum. “What were we going to do with the art if we didn’t [rebuild it]? Put it in the basement of the Legion? We needed a museum, and it had been there, it was just so damaged by the earthquake that it couldn’t stay open anymore. There were two choices: Be without one museum or rebuild it. That art needed a home, so I think it was pretty simple, we just had to rebuild it.” While it was 10 years of hard work, Wilsey

Wilsey is known for her unique fundraising style and her constant willingness to give. Here she shares tips on how to raise money to support a cause you believe in and more of her secrets. Consider the cause and the people behind it. “There are so many good causes that you want to be sure you’re working for a good one and not something that’s somebody’s personal aggrandizement. It needs to be run like a business.” Support diversity. “You want to be sure it’s big and diverse. And in this case diverse, not just in the obvious ways but, for me, age is important because young people are the future. So it’s important to have them well-represented.” Familiarize yourself with the institution. “To get on the board, they would have to be involved with the art form first. They would have to volunteer or be involved with the auxiliaries or something to be familiar with the art form and to come to the notice of people on the board who might say, ‘oh that person has a lot of knowledge in this area.’” Know the game you’re in. “Always understand the game you’re in, and then you can play it. But if you don’t understand what you’re doing, don’t even try.” Don’t do business with anyone in a hurry. “Never do business with a man running to catch a train. Now, of course, today it would be an airplane. But I think that’s very good advice. Don’t do business with anybody who’s in a hurry of Monaco, Charlene of Monaco, because it’s not going toAlbert workII out. There’s a reason for the Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom

TO A SAN FRANCISCAN, BANGKOK CAN BE OVERWHELMING. Bangkok’s population is nine times larger than San Francisco’s population. The square footage is 13 times bigger. The annual weather temperature is 91°F—that’s 28 degrees warmer than the average temperature in SF. The high-rises stretch for miles. The insane traffic is 24-hours per day. The crowded streets are filled with intense aromas from every type of food cart. When you step out of the Suvarnabhumi Airport and into Bangkok for the first time, it’s a sensory overload. That’s why it’s crucial to stay at a hotel that’s an oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle—a hotel like the recently opened Waldorf Astoria Bangkok. Located in the busy downtown shopping district, the Waldorf Astoria Bangkok is steps away from the Gaysorn Village Mall, Royal Bangkok Sports Club, and Erawan Shrine. Walk into the lobby, and the outside world instantly melts away. The first thing you’ll notice is the cool air conditioning and calming spa-like aroma. Next, you’ll see the soaring ceilings, elegant decor, and massive bronze screens—despite the openness, the space is intimate, inviting, and residential. A concierge will escort you through the lobby, which is merely a sitting room, to the elevators. You’ll ride up to the 14th floor upper lobby where you’ll sit at a desk and check into the resort. The service is impeccable and discrete. The staff is welcoming and unpretentious.

once a logging community and many of the places that remain today are steeped in history. One such place is The Harbor House Inn an upscale bed and breakfast 20 minutes south of Mendocino in a town called Elk. The Inn underwent eight years of restoration before it opened, with nine guest rooms, earlier this year. Initially built in 1916, Harbor House is a stunning redwood structure. The Goodyear Redwood Company commissioned architect Louis Christian Mullgardt to craft a home that showcased the beauty of the lumber. The house served as the offices and embarking point for lumber into the Pacific Ocean until 1966 when the mill was torn down. The property underwent a series of ownership changes. In 2005, its current owners, Edmund Jin and Eva Lu, purchased the premises. The duo launched Harbor House as a lifestyle brand in 2009 selling linens inspired by the area and finally in May of this year, reopened the historic building as a luxe lodging house. One of the things that make Harbor House unique is its innkeepers. Chef Matt Kammerer is in charge of all things culinary while his girlfriend, Amanda Nemec, is general manager of the property. The stylish young couple greets guests—welcoming them into the inn as if it were their actual home. With chocolate leather couches, vintage artwork, and antique furniture, the lobby is masculine, warm, and inviting. Outfitted in Harbor House linens, the rooms are chic

Chef Kammerer’s restaurant is a 25-seat jewel box, located just behind the lobby and surrounding an oversized fireplace and reclaimed wood table. Here, Kammerer’s culinary prowess shines. The hotel has extensive gardens and access to a private beach where the chef spends his mornings foraging for sea lettuce and other edible delicacies from the ocean. He sources all ingredients from a 50-mile radius of the hotel resulting in hyperlocal and super seasonal food. The menu, which consists of up to ten courses,

Kammerer treats the sea as an essential element and infuses subtle Japanese flavors into some of the dishes. He also oversees the decadent breakfast offerings which can be delivered to your room in the morning. Although there is not a spa, one can make arrangements for in-room treatments like massages. Although the misconception is that Lürssen only builds large yachts, we have delivered a considerable number of smaller vessels over the last 15

years, including 29 under 90 meters. Over the same period, we have produced 15 yachts above 90 meters. We still build about one superyacht in the 90+ meter size per year, but now we have more young customers who

want smaller and bespoke boats. As a result of our enhanced activities in this size bracket, we are engaging with many new clients. OHD: I saw your new book Concept Collection. Tell me about it. PL: This book shows different designs from the fresh minds of the youngest designers in the industry. They received the same brief: Create a 62-meter Lürssen with consideration for how the yacht will be used for relaxing, playing, sleeping, eating, and entertaining. Each of them received the same technical requirements for crew and engine room layout, tender storage, and other technical standards. OHD: What do you think of these young designers’ creations? Are they up to your standards? PL: We were pleasantly surprised at the quality and innovation of their work! As we continue our journey of building yachts to meet market demands, we hope that clients will be inspired. We have great talents who will develop your dream Lürssen, regardless if it is 50 or 150 meters. Over our long history of more than 140 years, we have been privileged to build boats of all shapes and sizes. From the wooden rowing boats of our humble beginnings to the large motor yachts we make today, we

are proud of the vessels that we create for our clients. To fill market demand, we have recently re-emphasized our production of motor yachts between 55 and 75 meters. OHD: Two years ago, you acquired Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg to strengthen your refit activities. How is this plan working out? PL: With the additional facilities in Hamburg, we now have unique capabilities and a second to none potential to undertake multiple massive refits at one time, all in Northern Germany. During the last year, more than a dozen yachts between 50 and over 100 meters have used the Lürssen facilities for modifications and maintenance works. Among them are some of the world’s most beautiful yachts such as Lady Moura,

While vacationing in Northern California, from my home in South Florida, I was introduced to St. Helena Reserve. I was immediately taken with the natural beauty of this majestic property. Having spent time in the hills of Tuscany, Italy, I was happily surprised at the similarities of the terrain and climate of the eastern mountain range in Napa. Indeed, it was love at first sight for Lax and his wife Monica—so much so, that they sold their home in Miami Beach to move to the San Francisco Bay Area to realize this spectacular landscape and curate it to its fullest potential. Breathing life into the two exceptional estate homes and completing the infrastructure of the additional five estate lots, this magnificent property has been a passionate labor of love that is now available for the first time to a future discerning buyer. Whether as a family compound or future development opportunity, St. Helena Reserve offers luxury, exclusivity and unparalleled privacy. Due to continuing development restrictions in the hills surrounding St. Helena, the property will not be duplicated in the future. For further information, video and photos, visit www. INVESTING WITH PURPOSE
Doing Well While Doing Good
THE HOLIDAY SEASON INVITES BOTH YEAR-END PLANNING AND A SPIRIT OF GENEROSITY. Investors have many options when considering both financial and social returns. Here is a brief discussion of social finance or the concepts and trends where wealth and values meet. Social finance offers investors ways to realize competitive returns through investments designed to achieve meaningful societal or environmental impacts. Investing in socially and environmentally conscious ways is growing in popularity with all types of investors. In fact, sustainable, responsible and impact investing accounted for $22 trillion in global assets at the end of 2014. By understanding the options available to them, investors and their families can better align their wealth with their personal values and implement various social finance strategies designed to reflect their financial, legacy

The Buck, at 19 years young, is a Bay Area hidden jewel and the only independent research institute globally dedicated solely to the biology of aging. Twenty principal investigators and their scientific teams passionately work in a field that’s now become the hottest sector in life sciences. The Institute receives more than 85% of its funding through private donors, foundation grants, business development partnerships, and government research grants. The science of conquering aging is an expensive yet incredibly important undertaking. I appreciate the Buck because it’s not an anti-aging laboratory. They aren’t looking for the fountain of youth or trying to achieve immortality. They are focused on studying the underlying pathways and processes of aging to help us all live better longer. Through my involvement, I’m learning a lot. And you can too, through their event series or by becoming a member. I’m confident The Buck’s science will add years to our lifespan and decades to our healthspan. We may all go gray and develop a few wrinkles—I can live with that. But suffering from significant diseases doesn’t have to be part of aging. We want our bodies to be reliable and agile at any age; our minds full of sharp wit, clear memories and an ability to share the wisdom we’ve collected through a lifetime of experience. SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY’S STUNNING OPENING GALA The opening of the San Francisco Symphony (SFS) is the official start to the whirlwind fall season, a time when SF’s socialites come out in full force. Although 2018 marks the 107th year of the SFS, the gala ushered in a new era of inclusivity for the orchestra. For the first time, the event was chaired by a gay male couple, James Hormel and Michael Nguyen-Hormel. The exciting evening was the Symphony’s coming out party. SFS hosts four different pre-performance dinners. Then came the real fun: the parade from City Hall to Davies for the show! The performance that followed, featuring world-renowned vioFarah Makras, Komal Shah, Sonya Molodetskaya, Mary Beth Shimmon, Jennifer Walske

JAY JEFFERS HOSTS BOLD PARTY IN HONOR OF NEW BOOK Interior designer and man about town Jay Jeffers is known for his daring and modern designs. He’s also a superb host who happens to throw fabulous parties. Recently, his two talents came together at the launch of his second book, Be Bold. The sensational event took place at luxe showroom Coup D’Etat and had a theme that mimicked the title of the book. Handsome men in blue bowties and suspenders poured magnums of Billecart-Salmon rosé. Waitstaff passed appetizers—delicious steak tartare and mini pretzel buns with braised beef—while the crowd, in flashy looks, mingled. GLITTERING OPERA BALL TRANSPORTS GUESTS TO ARGENTINA The creme de la creme of San Francisco society was taken on a whirlwind romantic journey to Argentina at Opera Ball 2018: ¡Viva La Noche! The experience was courtesy of the San Francisco Opera, the Opera Guild (led by the president Jane Mudge), event stylist J. Riccardo Benavides, and ball chairs Shannon Cronan and Kathy Huber. While guests didn’t board a plane to Buenos Aires, the lavish opening night ball metaphorically transported 700 elegantly-dressed attendees to the sultry streets of South America. The evening included a reception and seated dinner followed by the captivating performance, Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. SAN FRANCISCO OPERA PRESENTS PLÁCIDO DOMINGO IN CONCERT
Arturo Chacón-Cruz and Olivia Hsu Decker
On October 21, San Francisco Opera presented Placido Domingo in concert with soprano Ana Maria Martinez, tenor Arturo Chacon-Cruz and the San Francisco Opera Orchestra conducted by Spanish conductor Jordi Bernàcer. The soldout performance featured scenes from Verdi’s La Traviata and Simon Boccanegra, along with arias and duets from Spanish zarzuelas. Domingo’s partnership with San Francisco Opera dates back to 1969 when he made his debut as Rodolfo in La Bohème. This concert marked his first return to San Francisco since 2010. Although he has aged, his voice is still powerful, and his aria as the father in La Traviata was

DESIGN WORLD CONVERGES ON FORT MASON FOR FALL ART & ANTIQUE SHOW At the 37th annual San Francisco Fall Art & Antiques Show there was a flurry of happy hours, talks, and events with the most popular being Wednesday, October 10th’s opening night preview gala. The party, which benefits Enterprise for Youth, is one of the most fun evenings of the year. Suzanne Tucker, the show’s chair, and Ariane Trimuschat, the show’s director, decided on the theme— The Sun, The Moon, & The Stars: Celestial Imagery in Art, Antiques, & Design. The concept was everywhere, from the artwork hanging in vendor stalls to the four designer vignettes created by Charlotte Moss, Ken Fulk, Madeline Stuart, and The Wiseman Group.
