Publisher’s LETTER IN THIS FALL ISSUE, WE ARE GETTING READY FOR ALL the autumn event openings, the Symphony, the Opera, the Fall Antique Show, the Mill Valley Film Festival, and the once-in-the-lifetime grand opening of the Chase Center, the Warriors’ brand-new arena in San Francisco. We are so pleased to feature Warriors principal owner Joe Lacob and his wife Nicole as our cover story this issue. Nicole is also the cochair of the San Francisco Symphony Opening Gala, a double celebration! The Chase Center opening will take place on September 6 with a historic concert of San Francisco Symphony performing with our beloved local rock band, Metallica. It is a repeat performance of the Grammy Award-winning concert they collaborated on 20 years ago. Our exclusive cover story takes you behind the scene of Chase Center and tells the inside story how Joe and Nicole followed and accomplished their dreams and gave back to the community. Joe promised, “We might not always win the NBA championship, but we will always be here for our community.” We have a close-up interview with San Francisco Symphony Opening Gala co-chairs Rachael Bowman and Nicole Lacob on the celebration of Michael Tilson Thomas’ 25th and final season as music director for the 2019-20 program. Rachael and Nicole shared with us their spectacular Opening Night Gala plans and how the proceeds will benefit the Symphony’s myriad artistic community and education programs. We take you to the 69th annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, another fabulous and long-running community charity event. This event has grown to be one of the most significant luxury motorcar events in the world, along with the Motorsports Gathering at The Quail, now in its 17th year. The Pebble Beach and Monterey Car Week events feature some of the world’s rarest and most exquisite OLIVIA HSU DECKER OWNER/PUBLISHER o.decker@GGSIR.com Keep up with us digitally at www.HauteLivingSF.com Here you’ll find daily postings of San Francisco Bay Area stories.
vintage automobiles. The festivities also include launches of new cars and exhibit innovative concept cars that inspire our imaginations on the road. This year, there is so much to celebrate: we covered the 100 years of Bentley Motors, the 25th anniversary of the McLaren F1, and the 110th Anniversary of Buggati. We also recapture the highlights of Festival Napa Valley’s ten best days of summer to share with you the music, the wine, the food, and the generous and gracious hospitality of Napa Valley vintners and community. A big bravo goes to the Arts for All Gala that raised $2.6 million this year for Napa Valley music and arts education programs. Last but not least, I would like to introduce our new managing editor, Teresa Rodriguez, who debuts in this issue. Teresa is no stranger to the magazine, as she has been our major contributor. Teresa and I would like to thank our readers for your support that inspires us to strive for a better magazine in every issue. A big toast to Luxury Lifestyle with Purpose!

Waterfront living, captivating views, classic architecture and elegance define this ultraprime residence on the western shore of Belvedere. Designed by renowned architect Warren Callister, the stately home exemplifies the ‘Belvedere’, with approximately 9,500 sq. ft. of living space including guest quarters, for a total of seven bedrooms, six bathrooms and two half-baths. Unobstructed views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline dazzle from nearly every room. Endless vistas create the ultimate backdrop for refined interior spaces, including the large formal living and dining rooms with direct access to view-side terraces through French doors, the intimate library with fireplace, and the top-level master suite with dual bathrooms and dressing rooms and a private terrace. Five fireplaces, a three-car enclosed garage with parking for seven vehicles, three level lawns and the pride of owning one of Belvedere’s finest homes add to the allure of the distinguished trophy estate.

Among other participating motorcars for Best of Show this year were a line-up of amazing classic cars from 1900s to 1960s, including Richard and Melanie Lundquist’s 1938 Talbot-Lago T150C-SS Figoni & FalaschiTeardrop Cabriolet; David F. MacNeil’s 1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato Coupé; and Arturo Keller’s 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Erdmann & Rossi Special Cabriolet. This year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance raised more than $2 million for charity. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charitable partner of the Concours, these funds will benefit more than 80 local charities, impacting the lives of more than 10,000 children annually in Monterey County. Jay Leno, comedian and former TV host of the Tonight Show and host of Jay Leno’s Garage, led the charity drawing during the Concours Awards Ceremony. He raised more than $100,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County by offering tours of his garage at $3,000 per person. He has now raised more Bentley concept electric car interior
than $800,000 for Concours charities. Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, had total sales of $76,824,740 during the 2-day auction. The top sales were the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider which sold for $9,905,000; the 1975 Ferrari 312T which fetched $6,000,000; the 1931 Studebaker Special Indy Car which set a new auction world record at $1,105,000; and the 1939 Alfa Romeo Tipo 256 Coupe which hammered in at $2,755,000. Of 140 lots, 108 were sold at an amazing average price of $711,340 per car! THE QUAIL MOTORSPORTS GATHERING The Quail Motorsports Gathering, organized by The Peninsula Signature Events, took place on August 16. Attended by over 6,000 car enthusiasts from around the world, the 17th annual automotive lifestyle event showcased more than 250 motorcars from luxury automotive brands, presented two “Fireside Chats” with 2015 World Endurance Champion Mark Webber and moderated by Philip Kadoorie, automotive influencer Alex Hirschi (a.k.a. “Supercar Blondie), and auto journalist Hannah Elliott. HauteSHOPPING JACKSON SQUARE
Slow shopping in this historic neighborhood district features exquisite, handcrafted merchandise THE STRIKING SILHOUETTE OF THE FUTURIST TRANSAMERICA PYRAMID stands in stark contrast to adjacent Jackson Square. In this historic mini-neighborhood, narrow, tree-lined streets and low-rise brick structures with cast iron shutters define the look of a district with a distinctive Gold Rush heritage. It’s a stylish, fortunate corner of San Francisco that survived the great earthquake and fire of 1906. Come with time on your hands. A handful of pretty streets defines Jackson Square as the slow shopping district for those who prefer craftsmanship to online shopping carts. This is a place for doorbells, polite greetings, and conversations with the makers of specialty items from ateliers. Admire hand-sewn leather shoes, pure cashmere jackets, hand-assembled bicycles, contemporary furniture, and more on display in inspiring, light-filled interiors. In Hotaling Place, a brass plaque pays tribute to the West Coast’s largest liquor repository, circa 1866. Notice the horse head hitching posts, a throwback to the original stables lining the alleyway that’s now home to Allbirds’ flagship store for the popular brand of environmentally friendly footwear. A centerpiece of Jackson Square since 1980, Foster-Gwin is a refined 3,000-squarefoot Hotaling Place gallery specializing in 16th, 17th, and 18th century Continental furniture, tapestries, and works of art. View carefully edited pieces of outstanding quality, including Greco-Roman antiquities beside examples of the best artists from the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionim, all housed in a restored mid-19th century stable. Three years later, their leather factory was moved in-house. Today Shinola operates 30 stores coast-to-coast, including this good looking one in Hotaling Place. Creating a light, feminine aesthetic for their West Coast expansion was the objective of Nikki and Simone Zimmermann, the talented sisters behind the Australian fashion brand that bears their surname. Since the opening night gala is revered as the SFS’s largest fundraising arm for the year, the two women insisted that their combined networks come out in support of this jubilation. Drawing an influential crowd with tremendous affection for the arts, education, and the spirit that music brings to their lives, this evening lays the groundwork for the lifeline of musical opportunity in the lives of children throughout the Bay Area. “Our goal is to usher in a new generation of people to support the Symphony. We are bringing many of our friends from the peninsula to introduce them to this fabulous institution,” Rachael recounted. In their commitment to ensure the San Francisco Symphony continues its mission of educating our youth with exposure to music and community-based programs, Rachael and Nicole felt passionately committed to the lineage of musical discipline and offerings that SFS supports in our educational system. This year, the two women have brought great support from their friendships to safeguard these vital programs in our community. Proudly, the San Francisco Symphony offers a plethora of community and educational programs throughout the year and provides scholarships and countless other programs in support of youth education in the arts. In serving its home community and beyond, SFS grants access to music education for all students in San Francisco’s public elementary schools, while supporting all band and orchestra programs in our public middle schools and high schools over a 5-year contiguous period. The program continues to thrive, thanks to the generosity and colossal sup-

port of the patrons in attendance on “Gala Night.” Being surrounded by exceptional talent, the Symphony retains its level of global prestige. With prestige comes awareness and respect: Michael Tilson Thomas has given the San Francisco Symphony much to be proud about. The stamp his legacy will leave on this city is one of historic greatness. “The San Francisco Symphony is one of the finest orchestras in the world. MTT’s visionary leadership has brought the orchestra to new heights every year for decades. The level of artistry I witness every time I attend a concert is incredible! He is truly a genius of our time. One of the best things about the Symphony is that it’s constantly innovating and looking for new ways to bring music to today’s audiences. Looking ahead to the future, we will be welcoming Esa-Pekka Salonen as the Symphony’s next music director. He’s a brilliant mind and on the cutting edge of the music scene worldwide. The future is very bright for this Symphony!” Rachael enthused. In this jovial celebration and in MTT’s final season conducting the San Francisco Symphony, we can’t help but recount his early days starting in San Francisco. With his San Francisco debut at age 29, MTT’s legacy with the SFS began in 1974, conducting Mahler’s Ninth Symphony. This was cemented by his role in becoming the full-time leader

From 1995 to present, Michael Tilson Thomas formulated a vast array of ground-breaking promise through a multitude of areas, bringing rank and honor front and center into the classical music scene. Twenty-five years post, we joyously celebrate the passion and presence of MTT and his myriad of gifts to our community. In creating what Nicole describes as an “epic evening to remember,” we reflect on the musical selections: what inspired them and what prompted their selection for this year’s gala evening? Nicole tells Haute: “MTT himself chose the musical selections for opening night. They are pieces very close to his heart. The gala concert program includes pieces by American composer Aaron Copland and Bay Area composer Gordon Getty. It also includes the inspirational final movement from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. We’ve also planned the concert to be a cutting-edge, multi-media experience, with some surprises MTT doesn’t even know about yet!” As a parallel in the world of Nicole and husband Joe Lacob, this is a colossal year for them both with the opening of the new Chase Center. What a beautiful play on the similarities of birth and growth as

Is there a word or phrase that highlights both experiences for you? Nicole replies, “At the moment, chaotic. That said, I am so grateful to be able to honor the city that I love and MTT’s 25-year commitment to bringing it such magic. I hope that Chase Center can do the same. I find it fitting that our first event at Chase Center combines the two. A mother to three boys, Rachael speaks on the significance of being co-chair and what being a leader of the gala means to her: “I’m extremely grateful and honored to have been asked this year. MTT is such a brilliant mind, and we have worked hard to plan a celebration to send him off to his next chapter. For me, this gala is about helping usher in the next generation of symphony patrons so that the children in the Bay Area will continue to have the incredible resources the Symphony provides. Especially at this time in our history, music helps connect us all. With so much strife in the world, music brings us clarity, calm, and peace of mind. My three small boys will need the Symphony for their generation.”

IT’S BEEN MADE CLEAR THAT GUCCI’S
Creative Director Alessandro Michele knows how to delight and excite, further emphasized by his Fall/Winter 2019 collection show during Milan Fashion Week. The looks pulled from Michele’s liking for androgynous-themed aesthetics, while a whole slew of masks—each more inventive and creative than the next—really served as the most unique and aptly chosen addition to most of the runway looks. The masks were varied, some boasting aggressive spikes, some plain, some pull-on plastic styles, and some comprised of makeup and jewelry to conceal models’ identities. Additionally, in true Gucci form, a wide range of prints, colors, textures, and materials were used for a real mix-andmatch appeal. As always, Michele brought out a slew of A-listers in the audience, including François-Henri Pinault and his wife, Salma Hayek Pinault; Andrew Garfield; Saoirse Ronan; and Jared Leto.

Inspired by the Maison’s signature trunks made in the early 20th century, the compact style is so versatile, wearable as a clutch with an evening ensemble for a more formal look or with the crossbody strap for a more daytime-friendly aesthetic. The magnetic closure and signature S-lock ensure your belongings are safely enclosed, while the inside flat pocket is the perfect size for cards. This is one of my most personally favorite bags—a real conversation piece that adds such an elegant touch to any outfit. The Mandolin box bag is Ximena Kavalekas’ signature style that put her on the international fashion scene. Each bag is handmade in Italy from python skin, sustainably sourced from a python farm that protects those that are endangered. Ximena uses naturally shed skins from the protected pythons, which artisans in Italy hand-paint to give them their beautiful colors and finishes. To further her environmentally-friendly initiatives, a percentage of sales goes directly to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Foundation with the mission of protecting the environment and ecosystem for pythons. Available in a wide range of colors and patterns, each Mandolin comes with a detachable strap for multi-wearability. Shop the style on the brand’s website, www.ximenakavalekas.com, or visit one of the brand’s third party retailers like Moda Operandi or Net-A-Porter.

MARK CROSS GRACE SMALL BOX GOYARD MINAUDIERE Incredibly sophisticated and eye-catching, the Goyard Minaudiere is another very elegant and super cool style easily paired with a variety of outfits. Its extra compact sizing makes it more evening-appropriate, accommodating the bare necessities for an upscale night out on the town. A unique element for added interest and functionality is the removable, cage-like strap, which the bag fits directly into, transforming the clutch style into a cross-body bag, without the need for hooks or rings on the bag itself. Available in a variety of colors—classic colors like black and tan are priced a little lower than the special colors—some of which also include fun pops of Goyard colors on the inside lining. Visit your local boutique in Beverly Hills, Bal Harbor, or locations in New York: Maison Goyard on 63rd Street, Bergdorf Goodman’s on Fifth Avenue, and Barneys New York on Madison Avenue.
Mark Cross is one of the most recognizable names when it comes to box-style bags. The Grace bag is one of the brand’s most iconic, inspired by the overnight case that Grace Kelly wore in Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, which Mark Cross created. The smaller-scaled size is gorgeous and easy to wear, with a cute and functional top handle giving it that little extra suitcase-like aesthetic. The style is available in an endless number of colors and finishes, such as smooth leather and rattan, and even some super high-end materials like alligator and python. All are made in Italy and include a detachable, matching cross-body strap, as well as gold-plated brass or palladium hardware, dependent on the selected color way. For more information or to purchase, visit the brand’s website, www.markcross.com or via any of its third party retailers, including FWRD, Matches Fashion and My Theresa.

luxury shoe designers when it comes to women’s footwear, each embodying its own ethos and philosophy when it comes to fashion and function. But there is something to be said about the Gianvito Rossi shoe, which somehow, oh-so-seamlessly, combines style, sexiness, and perhaps the most difficult of the three, comfort, into each and every heel. For these reasons (and so many more), Gianvito Rossi has easily become my go-to preference when it comes to buying and wearing shoes. And despite his embracing trends, he is still able to create classic styles that are timeless and elegant. Needless to say, I was thrilled at the opportunity to interview the shoe guru and discuss some of my favorite styles — the Plexi, the Gianvito 105, the Elle 105 and of course, the Portofino 105 — but also to discover more about the history of the brand, Mr. Rossi’s thoughts on the Gianvito Rossi woman, and what we can expect from him in the near future.

TELL ME SOME BACKGROUND ABOUT THE BRAND FOR OUR AMERICAN READERS.
My entire life I have worked in shoes, along with my father who taught me everything I know. After many years of experience, I decided to start my own line in 2006. The first collection was Spring 2007. I really wanted to differentiate my point of view on shoes and embrace my own design philosophy of modern elegance. The momentum started in Europe and then, luckily, the States appreciated my work. WHAT MAKES GIANVITO ROSSI SO SPECIAL AND DIFFERENTIATES IT FROM OTHER SHOE BRANDS?
I care a lot about quality and the way the shoe is built. I think this is something which is very important when talking about a luxury accessory. It’s necessary that the piece be a pleasure to wear, buy, touch, and look at. If not, then it’s definitely not luxury.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO STAY MOSTLY WITHIN THE SHOE SPACE INSTEAD OF VASTLY EXPANDING TO HANDBAGS, FOR EXAMPLE, LIKE SO MANY OTHER SHOE BRANDS HAVE DONE?
I decided to stay focused on shoes, because it’s my world and I really like the design aspect, as it combines two elements: one is physical and the other is architectural or structural with the shape. I think it’s very interesting and exciting to design new shoes. WHO IS GIANVITO ROSSI FOR?
I think the Gianvito Rossi woman is an independent, strong-minded woman who wants to express herself in a very confident way. She has a strong character, she’s very modern, and she’s very elegant. She’s not a fashion victim at all! WHAT DO YOU HOPE THE WOMAN WEARING GIANVITO ROSSI FEELS WHEN WEARING YOUR DESIGNS?
I hope that women wearing my shoes can feel like themselves, and be very confident, because it’s important for women to be strong in facing their lives every day. FROM WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR CREATIVE INSPIRATION?
I would say it’s not always easy to say where inspiration comes from. It might be from travels, meeting people, movies or a certain sensation. There is no rule. I will say that having an input and a visual context or experience is important, and I try to immerse myself in that. DO YOU HAVE ANY MUSES?
I have many muses. It’s interesting how it changes. You have longtime relationships with people you work with and you exchange a lot of ideas. This is very important for me; but, at the same time, you meet new people and see things through a totally different lens. I do love seeing my shoes on real women.
YOU HAVE QUITE A FEW CELEBRITY FANS OF THE BRAND. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOU THAT SOME OF THE MOST FAMOUS AND IMPACTFUL WOMEN ORGANICALLY CHOOSE TO WEAR YOUR SHOES?
I am obviously very happy that a lot of celebrities choose to wear my shoes. It means a lot to me. But the most important thing is seeing that they look happy wearing the shoes. My designs are meant to highlight women—to make them feel even more beautiful. That’s the most important part and the highest result I can aim for.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE GIANVITO ROSSI STYLES?
I have a lot of favorite styles! One of them is a signature style I designed a few years ago—The “Vamp.” This style has a lot of my design philosophy in it, because it’s a little bootie and represents strength, but at the same time it has a deep décolleté, embodying femininity and sensuality.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE BRAND IN THE FUTURE?
There is already so much going on! We will see. My goal remains to make beautiful shoes; and what I’m looking to continue is to bring beautiful emotion and sensation to my clients.

From the outside of the roaring Warriors’ arena, it would be easy to assume that the lives of Joe and Nicole Lacob have always been one of gilded opulence. But, pull back the gold metallic curtains and you’ll find two incredibly grounded and generous individuals.

COVER STORY The waterfront arena will include two office towers with 580,000 square feet of office space, over 100,000 square feet of retail space, a 5.5-acre public park, and a beautiful plaza that will feature numerous events and attractions. “I am deeply involved in every aspect of Chase Center. Quite honestly, it might be the single hardest thing I have ever done in my career. I have helped build multi-billion-dollar companies and we have won several NBA championships, but this was much tougher. We want this building to be the best basketball arena and concert venue in the world. And, we designed it to be intimate for basketball, have a terrific sound system, and have a wide variety of food. A lot of people put a lot of hard work into this.” Chase Center will have numerous unique options for dining — both inside and outside of the venue — and several retail shops as well, including one of the largest team merchandise stores in the NBA. It will also offer a great city experience that San Francisco has always lacked. “And, it’s going to feature

IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS, WE HAVE GRANTED $11 MILLION TO VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS ALL AROUND THE BAY AREA,” JOE DECLARES WITH TREMENDOUS PRIDE. a phenomenal customer experience, which is the part I am most proud of,” Lacob said. Another reason Joe is so proud of the project is because Chase Center was 100 percent privately financed. There were no city funds from San Francisco and no taxpayer money used to pay for the building. “We did not want to take away from essential city services like education, fire, or police,” Joe said. “The fact is, the city didn’t have to pay for it, but the city and the residents will greatly benefit from it. And, we are very proud of that.” San Francisco was the only major city in North America that didn’t have a 15,000-plus seat arena, but now Chase Center will generate ample sales and property taxes for the city. PHILOSOPHY OF GIVING BACK that owning a major sports team, at some level, is more of a community partnership. The team, in some ways, is really owned by the Bay Area and the fans; we have an important role to give back to the fans who support us. We have built many public basketball courts around the Bay Area and, most importantly, the Warriors Community Foundation is committed to improving the lives of others,” Joe shares. The foundation does not create an endowment that is locked away while slowly utilizing a percentage of the funds over a period of time. Instead, the Draymond Green Court

Joe and his wife, Nicole, believe that a good education is the key to the lives of youngsters. “Underprivileged children and education is our passion and we are extremely focused on that particular issue. Nicole was a teacher for years. We jointly decided to commit to the same goal of education. We are not going to be a championship contender every single season, but we want our fans to know that our efforts in the community will be there regardless and, hopefully, they will stick by us. So, in those terms, it is almost like a joint venture, if you will,” Joe shares. Along with the many programs they support via the Warriors Community Foundation, the organization has also partnered with Kaiser Permanente to support mental health programs in schools. “The Golden State Warriors are now more than a basketball team,” Lacob said. “We are a sports and entertainment organization. We have venues that we own and manage, and we own and operate restaurants. We Club Suite
are booking concerts; the lineup we have in place for the opening month of Chase Center is amazing. Every major act that goes on tour will want to play in San Francisco. We plan to be the Madison Square Garden of the West Coast and like O2 in London.” The opening concert at Chase Center on September 6 will feature Metallica and the SF Symphony. “We wanted it to be big, but we also wanted it to be very San Francisco. Twenty years ago, the Symphony and Metallica won a Grammy for collaboration, so we wanted to recreate that magic. I’m not a huge symphony guy in general, but for Nicole, it is pretty cool,” Joe said. Q: How will you shore up the team after the loss of Kevin Durant and Andre Iguodala? A: We think we had a very productive summer with the roster moves that we made. Kevin and Andre were a big part of our team and helped us win multiple championships over the last few years; and, we thank them for all of their terrific contributions. Q: How much pressure do you feel to have a solid team for the first year at the new arena? A: Our goal is to be a good team for a sustained period of time, which

is the true test of an outstanding organization. We don’t feel any added pressure being the first year at Chase Center, because our goal is to field a competitive team every season. At the end of the day, we realize that we are not going to make the Finals every season, but we will always strive

for excellence. Q: The Warriors have dominated the Western Conference for the last five years. What are your feelings about the monumental changes in the team, the staff, and the big move to SF? A: I’m really excited about the upcoming season and the move to San Francisco and a spectacular new arena. We’ve had a few changes on the roster, but that’s part of the game. Change is inevitable. But, I really like our roster and the moves we made during the summer. And, I think our fans will be excited as well, especially with some of our young players who will get an opportunity to play this season. It’s an exciting time, both on the court and with the new arena in San Francisco. Upper Concourse

HauteTRAVEL WHERE DOES THE INCREDIBLE BLUE OF LAKE TAHOE come from? Science attributes the lake’s purity and cool temperature to the significant depth of 1600-something feet and the clean granite bed. One of the clearest lakes in the world, Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is a shimmering wonder, constantly under surveillance and protection of university researchers, government programs, and multiple private groups of environmentalists who dedicate plenty of time and resources to keeping it blue and to preserving its ecosystem as a natural treasure. Located on the border of California and Nevada, the largest alpine lake in North America lures travelers from near and far all year round, promising the pure luxury of unspoiled nature. Almost 300 animal species and more than 1,000 plant species are found in the Lake Tahoe Basin. From wildflowers to singing birds and fluttering butterflies, it teems with life. Plan a trip to North Lake Tahoe, where ski resorts await in winter and sandy beaches offer water sports in summer. In spring and fall, for hikers and mountain bikers, forest trails meander between white firs, Sierra junipers, and Ponderosa pines and past sparkling streams and waterfalls. Make your home away from home at the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe, the only AAA 5-diamond mountain resort in Northern California, on a slope above Village-at-Northstar. LUXURY AMSTERDAM The recently opened Waldorf Astoria is fit for a king
a bustling European hub of trade and tourism, has spent the past decade quietly cultivating a different kind of experience for a different kind of visitor, the luxury visitor. Settled as a humble fishing village in the 12th century, Amsterdam rose to glamour and glory during the famous Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, when the Netherlands ruled the seas and the country forged a position as a world leader in art, culture, business, and wealth. Some participants in the current wave of luxury hotels, dining, art, and shopping experiences started in that era and are now freshly renovated. Some are new. Together, they coalesce into an Amsterdam prepared to accommodate even the most discriminating traveler.

HOTELS HOTEL PULITZER Situated in the center of the Nine Streets neighborhood, the city’s shopping and dining hotspot, the Pulitzer Hotel unfolds in a maze of rooms, suites and meeting places. Composed of 25 interconnecting townhouses built 400 years ago along the main canal, Hotel Pulitzer recently underwent a massive and bold transformation and has punched up its personality in the process. Every room is different. Some of the suites, which convey the feel of a private apartment, have been custom-crafted according to themes: the Book Suite, replete with an archway of books; the Art Collectors Suite, like staying in a gallery; and the Music Collectors Suite, highlighted by a wall of trumpets. The Pulitzer Bar was a see-and-be-seen place back when Peter Pulitzer, of the Pulitzer Prize family, opened the hotel and still merits a visit. With a modern sensibility that honors its historic past, the Hotel Pulitzer sits at the center of luxury in Amsterdam. www.pulitzeramsterdam.com CONSERVATORIUM Laying claim to Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh, Amsterdam is an art lover’s dream. For those who plan on hitting the city’s museums, the Conservatorium, located in the Museum Square District, perfectly fits the bill. It’s easy to find fine restaurants that rival the most elite of any major European city. But just like the city itself, some dining experiences combine high quality with endearing quirkiness. The RIJKS Restaurant is one. Here, local, seasonal, and organic ingredients reinvigorate old Dutch recipes. Echoing the Rembrandts and Vermeers within the museum itself, the restaurant treats its food like art, both in presentation and in culinary refinement. No wonder it has earned a Michelin star. www.rijksrestaurant.nl

A MAGNIFICENT MEDITERRANEAN ESTATE Stylish View Residence on over one acre I FIRST MET LARAE AND ROGER QUY IN 2007, WHEN I WAS SELLING THIS MAGNIFICENT SPANISH Colonial style home. LaRae and Roger fell in love with it after over a year of searching for their dream home in Marin County and the San Francisco Bay Area. They bought it on the spot, updated it beautifully, and enjoyed it tremendously. Now they’re ready to part with it as they retire to Arizona and the home they purchased in Scottsdale. Roger is a neuroscientist and a venture capitalist. He has written a book about Jesus for Catholics: All About Jesus: The Single Story from Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John. He was invited to visit the Vatican last year, where the Pope wrote a personal introduction for the book. LaRae was an undercover and counterintelligence FBI agent for 24 years. She exposed foreign spies and recruited them to work for the U.S. Government. As an FBI agent, she developed the mental toughness to survive in environments of risk, uncertainty, and deception. After retiring from the FBI, she became a writer and leadership coach. She has written two books, Secrets of A Strong Mind and Mental Toughness for Women Leaders. She shares with readers that there is nothing more powerful than the human brain, once we have the mental toughness we need to succeed in life and business. LaRae recently told me, “The only four-letter word I never heard in my 24-year career as an FBI agent was ‘can’t.’ No matter how hard or difficult the case, my job was to solve it. Often the obstacles I faced were not ones I could predict, so it required a lot of thinking on my feet.” Also, surprisingly, she was always authentic and hon-

SHOOTING FOR THE MOON
The $10 million campaign that could take Jameson Animal Rescue Ranch nationwide

IF WE CAN PUT HUMANS ON THE MOON, THEN CERTAINLY WE CAN build a sustainable ranch and solution center for animals in Napa Valley. That was the message Monica and David Stevens, founders of Jameson Animal Rescue Ranch, not-so-subtly delivered to their guests at WineaPAWlooza 2019, a memorable, 2-day affair that fittingly took place during the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s moon landing. JARR seized the opportunity and launched its Moonshot, a bold, capital campaign to raise $10 million to build the facility which famed architect Howard Backen will design. Under the stars at the beautiful Tusk estate high in the hills of Oakville, I sat in astonishment when a $1 million pledge from donors wishing to remain anonymous was announced to get the ball rolling for Lot 17 in the live auction, JARR’s Moonshot. Please go to www.jamesonanimalrescueranch.org to learn about this campaign and plans to replicate the center across the country. The generosity of the people of Napa Valley never ceases to amaze me. On this evening, vintner Michael Uytengsu opened up his private estate, which he calls Papa’s Perch in honor of his late father, for the first time for a charity event. We were welcomed with Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé, which we sipped while enjoying the jaw-dropping views of the valley before strolling into the cave for a grand tasting featuring several wines handcrafted by winemaker ex-

Organic livestock production requires feed be 100 percent organic and animals have outdoor access and pasture. Organic farming methods encourage biodiversity through crop rotation and mineral-rich soil. Foods can be labeled “100% Organic,” just “Organic” (meaning they are at least 95% organic), or “Made with Organic Ingredients” (70% of ingredients must be organic). Farms producing organic produce or meats must meet the strict legal regulations to be certified organic. The USDA Organic seal or a certifying agent seal like CCOF (California Certification of Organic Farming) indicates at least 95 percent of the ingredients are organic. Some small farmers find organic certification a burden even though they may adhere to organic practices. Picacho Lane • Montecito, California • Offered at $22,450,000 Exuding the ambiance of a French country estate, this magnificent manor is nestled on approximately 4.5 spectacular acres in revered Montecito, California. It represents the epitome of classic design, prestige and privilege. While the residence has undergone a major renovation and expansion in recent years, as well as multiple upgrades, it still holds true to its original design aesthetic. The resulting approximately 12,000 sq. ft. manse, re-designed by noted architect Don Nulty, AIA, is complemented by a separate guest studio, cabaña, multiple garages, a horse barn, pool, large Koi pond filled with beautiful fish, tennis court and beautiful landscaping. Stunning views, from many rooms as well as most areas of the grounds, are of the dramatic Santa Ynez Mountain Range. Although the estate seems far from the madding crowd and is quite private and gated, it is only minutes from Montecito’s charming Upper Village, world-class lodging, hiking trails, pristine beaches and highly-acclaimed schools, including coveted Montecito Union School. Nearby, internationally-acclaimed Santa Barbara, known as “The American Riviera,” offers its cultural riches, dining and entertaining venues, shopping and services. The Santa Barbara Airport, and the Los Angeles International Airport slightly more than an hour away, provide convenient private and commercial air transport. Savor the serenity of this rarefied setting and bask in its air of relaxed sophistication. Celebrate the joie de vivre of the indoor-outdoor lifestyle. KEN FULK
METAPHORICALLY SPEAKING, EVERYTHING KEN FULK TOUCHES TURNS TO GOLD, AS EVIDENCED BY HIS LATEST passion project. Saint Joseph’s Arts Society is an art, retail, and performance space handsomely carved out of a restored San Francisco church that stood empty in SoMa for almost 30 years. The century-old, deconsecrated house of worship enjoys a new life as the ultimate event venue with art-filled interiors, sun-splashed by day and impossibly opulent by night. Haute Living asked the designer about his inspiration and vision in undertaking this massive 22,000-square-foot restoration and the stunning multi-purpose space that also supports an artists’ incubator.

A: With the mission to promote and preserve the relevance of art and artists in San Francisco, the non-profit 501(c)(3) Saint Joseph’s Arts Foundation funds the participation of working artists who gain free daily access for co-working and cultural programming. There are opportunities for exhibitions, commissions, and performances. The foundation also partners with local arts organizations and schools, including Intersection for the Arts, San Francisco Arts Institute, San Francisco Ballet, San Francisco Arts Commission, and American Conservatory Theater to offer our artists co-exhibitions, free studio space, residency programs, and lecture opportunities.
