The Haven Facilities Masterplan The Haven Facilities Masterplan is the most comprehensive planning project ever undertaken in our 30-year history. The intention of the Masterplan is simple: to have the facilities at The Haven match the high quality of the programs and faculty who lead them. The Masterplan represents the best collective wisdom and vision for the institution and will serve as a road map for site development, infrastructure, landscape, building renovation and new construction. The Facilities Masterplan report can be downloaded from haven.ca in summary and in full. The next 5–10 years promise to be an exciting time, as we plan for and execute two new lodge buildings. In 2015 and 2016 we will be undertaking a number of projects that constitute Phase 1 of the Masterplan, the ‘Front Door’. These projects include investing to improve the Heron, Phoenix and Thunderbird buildings; moving the parking lot and improving the entrance to the property; building a new underground 100,000-gallon water cistern and hydro and septic infrastructure projects.

Professional Training
EFT Couples Therapy’s Dr. Sue Johnson Presentation and Workshop at The Haven, September 2015
Professional training has been an integral part of The Haven for many years, attracting adults and youth from different walks of life and from all over the world. We offer certificates and diplomas in group facilitation, counseling and leadership. The skills development we offer is hard to find anywhere else.
Dr. Sue Johnson will give an evening presentation for the general public and a one-day workshop for counselling professionals. Provisional dates are September 29 and 30, to be confirmed. Dr. Johnson is an author, clinical psychologist, researcher, professor, popular presenter and speaker and a leading innovator in the field of couples therapy. She is the primary developer of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), which has demonstrated its effectiveness in over 25 years of peer-reviewed clinical research. Her most recent book, Love Sense, The Revolutionary New Science of Romantic Relationships, outlines a new logical understanding of why and how we love – based on the latest scientific evidence and cutting-edge research. Explaining that romantic love is based on an attachment bond, Dr. Johnson shows how to develop our “love sense” – our ability to develop long-lasting relationships.
Haven Training Programs Our training programs are designed to suit a broad range of life circumstances, interests, and learning styles. Individuals can experience the pleasure of personal discovery and professional development in an atmosphere respectful of their particular strengths and challenges. Our training focuses on learning how to:
• Support others while being fully present with ourselves • Work in an interdependent team, being personal and supportive • Develop skills in interpersonal communication, energetic experiential forms and group facilitation
The Haven offers an alternative to the serious impact of social isolation, blame and polarization in our world by providing programs in self-responsible relational living Youth Leadership Training The Youth Leadership Diploma (YLD) program provides an exceptional experience for youth of a range of ages, backgrounds and talents. The YLD program offers youth the possibility of meaningful volunteer hours to satisfy high school graduation requirements; opportunities for a positive working experience; support for moving into paid employment (including references); and a way to demonstrate extracurricular or volunteer experience that is valuable in applying for university or other post-secondary education. Teens with YLD program experience may take their skills onwards into adult leadership.

ideals, and are interested in learning more about living in the present
JUL 17–19 Jane Geesman & Sarah Lucht As an actor, you don’t make up or pretend anything. You commit your full, authentic self to portray the human experience. As a result, this program will benefit anyone interested in furthering their journey of self-discovery, as well as those who are curious about acting and performance. It is a popular belief that actors ‘lose’ themselves in their roles. In fact, it is the responsibility of actors to find themselves in their characters through a process of:
• Self-discovery • Self-revelation • Relationship with fellow actors • Engagement with the world of the play format: Through exercises designed for acting students, including improvisation, movement, scene study, and breath work, participants will experience the intimacy and aliveness of the acting process. The focus of this program is not on final performance, but on the process of bringing yourself forward, connecting with, and trusting, your own natural instincts. No prior acting experience is needed. Just bring yourself and a willingness to play, and be prepared to discover the natural actor in you! tuition: $385 ($425) + accommodation & meals.
Addictions: A Wider Path in Recovery JUN 26–29 Wen-Shwu Lee & Rich Wilmer “What is addiction, really? It is a sign, a signal, a symptom of distress. It is a language that tells us about a plight that must be understood.” We like this quote from Alice Miller, and we believe addiction is far more complicated than this. In this program we will integrate several elements, including AA 12 steps and Haven models, to provide an expanded perspective and different choices in recovery from various types of addictive behaviors. In an integrated body-mind-spirit approach, we will offer …
• Practical tools to deepen your existing growth steps • Choices to live fully from a place of acceptance and selfmastery
• Paths to reach individual defined spiritual values and inner strength
• Concepts and tools of grounding and self-definition This program is for people who
• Have been engaged in some approach to recovery and are looking to widen and deepen their search and practice
• Are attached to non-substance objects or activities such as
food, work, appearance, sex, or relationships, and interested in exploring different possibilities

Anger, Boundaries and Safety Standing forward to create the life you want MAR 19–22, JUL 2–5, NOV 12–15 Greg Gurel Few emotions are more feared than anger. While some use the fear associated with unsafe, unboundaried anger expression to control, others limit their lives by continually trying to avoid any hint of anger. With either approach, the emotional constriction, physical difficulties, and relationship dysfunction that result are life diminishing. Anger is a natural feeling that exists in all of us and when expressed in a safe, boundaried manner is passionate, life enhancing, and beneficial to relationships. This program is highly useful for people who:
• Try to avoid confrontations and/or disagreements • Have been told they are ‘an angry person’ • Are holding anger and resentment for past events • Feel repressed, depressed, or emotionally numb • Want to get angry but are scared of what might happen format: The program offers participants opportunities to both express and witness the expression of safe and boundaried anger. Created by the late Joann Peterson, the program follows a progression: uncovering participants’ beliefs about anger, a discussion about the origins of anger and its varied spectrum of expression, and finally a gradual exploration of participants’ own energetic patterns and opportunities to experience various tools for anger expression. tuition: $595 ($655) + accommodation & meals.
Anxiety, Stress and Passion Potential to advance your life MAY 24–29, OCT 4–9 David Raithby & Sandey McCartney Stress, anxiety and passion are life issues close to our hearts, and we bring a wealth of personal and professional experience to support others in working in this area. This program focuses on understanding and harnessing these difficult life energies so as to foster more passionate and productive living. Many people find stress and anxiety troubling and use a variety of self-defeating behaviors, such as becoming numb, overly busy, or isolated, in an attempt to manage their lives. Unfortunately, this often results in greater ill-health and unhappiness, and denies the richness and growth that can be found in all life experience. Passionate living requires that we make choices, moment to moment, to embrace the full depth and range of our feeling and experience; that we risk opening ourselves more fully to all that life has to offer – from pain to pleasure.
• Discover what stress, anxiety and passion are, and how they
manifest in your daily life • Become aware and learn to recognize these energies at a body level • Gain valuable insight into your coping patterns and expand beyond these limitations • Learn guidelines for moving from anxiety and stress to self acceptance & passion • Experience your own strength for transforming these challenges • Bring renewed energy to your personal life, work and relationships format: This highly effective program offers practical skills and concepts, usable ‘take-home’ tools, dialogue and feedback, body, breath and energy work, visualization, individual focus, and experiential exercises. tuition: $970 ($1070) + accommodation & meals.
Befriending Your Inner Critic How to get out of your own way JUL 16–19 Marlyn Farrell Have you ever stopped yourself from doing or having what you truly want by telling yourself you aren’t good enough, smart enough, young enough, thin enough, talented enough, beautiful or handsome enough? In this program you will:
• Call out your hidden critic • Establish a healthy distance between yourself and your critic • Tell your critic what you need and want • Transform your inner critic into an ally format: Befriending Your Inner Critic uses music, visual arts, movement, guided meditation, laughter and story to help you build (and rebuild) relationship with your inner critic. Think of it like mediation, for you and your critic, or facilitating a creative meeting of the minds. For two weeks leading up to the program, carry a small notebook and pen with you. Capture the ‘stops’ in your day. Write down each time you hear negative self-talk and notice if you stop yourself from doing something. This is an exercise in building awareness, not judgment, so just notice. tuition: $545 ($605) + accommodation & meals.
Body, Breath and Energy Training An experiential program in bodywork and energy release JAN 8–13 Linda Nicholls & David Raithby This vibrant program embodies the exceptional combination of knowledge and experiential learning that is unique to The Haven. You will gain a solid foundation in the concepts and techniques of Haven-style body and energy work, and reap its benefits in your own life. This program is for people who want to:
• Encounter core feelings, beliefs, memories and behaviour
patterns as they are held in the body • Increase the depth and range of their work with people • Facilitate a shift from being ‘stuck’ to engaging life more fully • Become more aware of and utilize ‘transformative moments’ • Develop and use their own intuition, creativity and presence
format: Haven core faculty members Linda Nicholls and David Raithby demonstrate and encourage creative exploration of personal issues through a variety of energetic and expressive approaches. Supervised practice, group discussion, and personal work deepen the experience while feedback both as the ‘subject’ and as the ‘practitioner’ provides a rare opportunity for learning. tuition: $1025 ($1125) + accommodation & meals.
Body, Self and Soul An Introduction to Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IBP) MAY 15–17, JUN 12–14 Judith Fewster and Margaret Gayle IBP is a complete system of psychotherapy that combines verbal work with breath and body wisdom for the systematic integration of body, mind, emotions and spirit. IBP is a gentle and powerful way of confronting ones deepest patterns that are located in the body and unconsciously control our lives. Real change comes with insight, but only when awareness permeates the entire being – body as well as mind. IBP emphasizes the importance of relationships and focuses upon awareness at all levels, resulting in profound life-enhancing transformation. This program is for:
• Anyone seeking more awareness and aliveness in their personal lives and relationships
• Professionals wishing to incorporate the most advanced somatic approaches into their practices
format: The introductory program includes presentations, demonstrations, experiential opportunities, group discussions, individual sessions, and breath and movement work for sustaining integration and well-being. Take home resources are included. tuition: $400 ($440) + accommodation & meals.
Boundaries: The Vital Edge NOV 19–22 Linda Nicholls The active process of living and expressing boundaries effectively is what we call ‘boundarying’. It can be a hard word to say … and even harder to do! And the rewards are well worth it. Discerning, expressing and dialoguing about personal boundaries strengthens our ability to access creativity, energy and aliveness and enjoy greater intimacy and clarity in our personal and work relationships. This program is for you if you want to:
• Know and express who you really are • Experience greater intimacy in relationship • Discover, speak, and stand behind your own thoughts, feelings and choices
• Be proactive and clear when creating new, healthy
relationships, following past experiences of abuse or violence
• Free yourself from the experience of being trapped by roles, rules and obligations
• Gain a new perspective on allergies, chronic fatigue, depression and other symptoms
format: This program combines presentation and experiential learning about the discovery and effective implementation of the boundarying process. tuition: $585 ($645) + accommodation & meals.

Honestly, I liked everything … The program itself was life changing, the facilitators and assistants were warm and supportive. The food and accommodations supplied were good, and it was an all over great experience. k.mcg. Where do I start? The grounds, the air, the people, the FEELING I had when I arrived … it was like coming home. The leaders and interns were fantastic, the connections I made with others and most importantly with myself ... life changing. Beauty everywhere. a.b. I learned to embrace, accept, let go of grief I’ve held for 30 years. a.w. Connective Touch
Deep Listening: Core Skills for Coaching
OCT 29–NOV 1 Gillian Enright & Jane Olynyk
Making space for people to learn
Physical touch is one of the most intimate ways we have of making connection with another person. From infancy, touch is an essential part of our being alive and thriving. Giving or receiving touch offers us a chance to see into ourselves and make contact with another in a vulnerable and caring way.
FEB 12–15 Cathy Wilder & Jennifer Hilton
Each of us has a unique experience of touch. We respond to it in many different ways. We may open or defend, relax or tighten; we can be in our bodies or be completely removed from the experience. This program is an opportunity to explore how we are in touching, in a safe and non-sexual arena. You will learn:
• Breathing exercises to come in contact with your body • Touch as a form of communication • To honour and express boundaries, both your defenses and
your opening • To recognize your physiological and psychological responses to various kinds of touch • If you are a bodywork practitioner or Haven intern or facilitator, how to use your own body knowledge to make contact with someone and contribute to a healing process format: The learning will be offered in an atmosphere of safety, in which you notice and define your own boundaries. This program is not an exploration of sexual touching. tuition: $570 ($630) + accommodation & meals.
As an emerging conversational style in our lives and workplaces, the ‘new’ coaching is very different from the coaching most of us have experienced on the sports field. Cathy Wilder and Jennifer Hilton teach a form of coaching that creates space for others in which they do their work and learning. This requires being with the other person from a place of curiosity and heart. It involves being present and embodied – mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally. Coaching conversations can deepen contact and learning in teaching, leading, managing, helping, parenting, enrolling, or being in primary relationship. This program is for you if you wish to:
• ‘Help’ others without doing their work • Create relationships that support another’s learning • Deepen your capacity to be present with others • Learn more about who you are and how you are with others • Learn how to make the most of yourself in your interactions format: In an experiential group setting, we explore through exercises, activities and discussion how we can bring body, mind, spirit and emotion into focused conversations with others. Supervised practice coaching facilitates the learning of energy/body/ mind-based techniques. Immediate feedback, group dialogue and personal work all support participants to integrate their learning. tuition: $595 ($655) + accommodation & meals.

In this program, you will not be told whether you ‘should’ stay together or not. Only you can make that decision. You will learn some valuable tools and develop greater insight and clarity about your relationship. format: Couples will work together as a pair in a small group setting with individualized attention. Also, each couple will receive a private counselling session to deal with their own particular issues. Various exercises will be presented to help bring clarity to your relationship, including ‘homework’ to be done outside of session hours. tuition: $490 ($530) + accommodation & meals.

With conscious commitment, it is possible to interrupt depression. • You are experiencing depression • You have worked your way out of depression and want to focus on prevention

Couples Alive couples alive i: foundation
Communication and Boundaries
FEB 2–6 Sandey McCartney & David Raithby JUN 29–JUL 3 Sandey McCartney & David Raithby OCT 18–22 CrisMarie Campbell & Susan Clarke The more we have at stake in a relationship, the more challenging communication becomes. Unaddressed misunderstandings, unspoken wishes, and recurring struggles can become the breeding ground for ‘score-keeping’, distancing, and resentments.
The Couples Alive programs are for people in primary relationship who want more, and are prepared to go beyond the familiar to find it, in the safe and respectful company of other couples.
A mutual pathway to connection is fundamental for a dynamic, enduring primary relationship. This program begins with an in-depth exploration of communication from a distinctly couples perspective. A variety of breathing and body-awareness experiences help build a foundation for connection and growth and couples then explores the ‘boundary-ing’ process — identifying and expressing wishes, wants and preferences — and examine the impact and possibilities of this self-definition for their relationship.
What can you expect from Couples Alive?
• Deepen intimacy • Practice essential communication skills • Bring greater understanding and clarity to daily conversations • Distinguish between boundaries and walls, and value both • Learn to identify and express preferences • Find connection in the tension of disagreement • Recognize and transform entrenched family rules and patterns
• A rich resource for continued learning • Sustainable, accessible skills you can put into action right away • Deepening personal awareness and wholeness through connection and enlivenment • A noticeable shift for the better in your relationship • To leave surprised, encouraged and motivated
couples alive ii: edge
All programs are led by Haven faculty who are couples themselves.
Igniting Passion and Aliveness OCT 23–27 CrisMarie Campbell & Susan Clarke When we first meet someone, and increasingly as the stakes go up, we do our best to be seen in a positive light. In these exciting, and often uneasy times we begin to establish the range of who and how we are in our relationship. If we suppress ourselves to make our relationship work, we are likely to experience resentment, distance, distrust and anxiety. Alternatively, each person’s fully acknowledged and expressed presence can become the foundation of a solid, loving relationship. Through this process we begin to build the faith in ourselves and each other to relate at an edge of aliveness and discovery. Passionate expression and healthy power struggle can help establish growth and acceptance – as individuals and as a couple. In this program couples work to identify and share personal characteristics, beliefs and behaviours, go beyond ‘good-bad’ judgments, and explore how these traits can be embraced to enhance relationship:
• Experience more energy, pleasure and edge • Develop a healthy approach to power struggles • Learn ways to create personal safety and location • Learn to relate through risk, compassion and curiosity • Broaden and deepen your range of intimacy • Create an open and accepting environment for each person
Couples Alive I is a prerequisite for the remaining programs. Check haven.ca or call our registrars for the next Couples Alive III: Day to Day tuition: $1700 ($1860) per couple per program. Discounts of $500 per program are available if you take more than one program in the same year. Bring another couple with you and receive $250 off for each couple.
My partner and I just completed your Couples Alive I program. By day 2 we both understood without a doubt that we had been living in a vicious circle of power struggle and retreat, only to return for another struggle. By the end of that day we recognized with relief that there was a way out. By day 3 we were able to commit to working in that direction and in fact were actively practicing the tools we were being taught to achieve this. By day 4 we realized that we had laughed more in the last day than probably the whole last year. d.b & b.j. 11

Introduction to Nonviolent Communication Transforming relationships through our awareness of needs FEB 6–9 Mitch Miyigawa Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a world-renowned approach to relationships and conflict that has been helping people make peace in their families and their communities for 30 years. It’s been used by couples, parents, schools, and organizations, around the world, including conflict zones in the Middle East and Asia. NVC principles combine spiritual practice with social vision, modern psychology with Gandhi, emotional awareness with focused thought. This 3-day workshop introduces you to the core of NVC: a set of simple but profound ways to notice our inner life and the inner lives of others, and to compassionately connect to the common motivations and desires we all share. Make peace and powerful change, inside and out. Escape the cycle of blame and judgment. Befriend yourself first, then your world. tuition: $515 ($575) + accommodation & meals
14
APR 26–MAY 3 Mitch Miyigawa This week-long program is designed to support the ongoing development and integration of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) into every aspect of life, whether participants are relatively new to NVC or experienced practitioners. You’ll have an opportunity to practice NVC with guidance, compassion, and support, whether your aim is to broaden awareness in your personal life, teach the process to others, impact positive social change in the world … or all three. During this intensive week, you will:
• Find greater inner freedom as you become the bridge between the outer dimension – the pain and chaos of our human conditioning – and the inner dimension – the true authentic self. • Grow “power-with” vs. “power-over”, by looking deeply into personal and social sources for choice and courage in your life • Increase your awareness of your own inner chatter – projections, moralistic judgments, right/wrong thinking, blame, criticism – and learn to embrace it honestly and with compassion • Discover core beliefs that restrict your day-to-day life, and use this awareness to understand your deepest yearnings • Work through apparently “conflicting” needs to align your choices with authenticity and with full commitment to life. • Enhance your own “empathy power” as you learn to really listen to others, whether or not you agree with their choices in life • Express yourself freely, authentically, compassionately and naturally.
course prerequisite: We ask that you read Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s book, Nonviolent Communication, A Language of Life and that you have introductory level training in Nonviolent Communication. If you are unsure whether you have enough NVC experience to enjoy this immersion retreat, please email Mitch Miyagawa at mitch.miyagawa@gmail.com. format: In group circles, pairs, and solo work, we’ll bring NVC principles and practices to different aspects of your life. We’ll strive to find a balance between practical application (such as authentic expression, transformation of pain, and empathy skills), and digging deeper into principles and theories. This week includes lots of time for integration of the work, and will include written work, storytelling, movement, rehearsal and “posthearsal”. tuition: $1120 ($1260) + accommodation and meals.

The new Integrative format is designed to maintain a high level of integrity with the core components of the Living Alive Phase I program while bringing in new ways of delivering the experience through virtual learning and community. Living Alive Phase I Integrative provides and supports unique opportunities to apply, challenge and integrate the program content. It allows for a sustained learning period while minimizing the time away from home.
Living Alive Phase I intensive is the format that has been offered at The Haven for more than 30 years. This Intensive format provides a unique opportunity for those who choose to devote 26 consecutive days to the experience of self-discovery with a faceto-face group that remains together for the whole time.
The eight-month Integrative format combines three on-site modules, 4 to 8 days in length, with directed, intentional at-home work both individually and in virtual groups, supported by regular teaching and processing via video conference.
Throughout the program, participants work individually and in both large and small groups. A range of experiences is offered, all of which are intended to maximize your potential for self-awareness, self-responsibility and healthy relating with others.
The format will include an online community; this web-based location includes all program materials, schedule, and online materials, as well as a private discussion forum where you can interact with one another and with your instructors.
The Intensive program may also be taken in two parts, A and B.
In order to help you, and us, determine if you are a good fit for this format, there is a short screening form which we ask you to submit before you register.

From Memory to Memoir OCT 16–18 Ellery Littleton This program provides a creative approach to the writing of memoirs. It offers opportunities to reclaim the most important moments of your life and transform them into intimate narratives. The intensive journal-writing process employed during this meditative, inwardly-focused program stimulates both memory and creativity. The memoirs participants write in this program represent the heart of their life stories. There are many good reasons to learn to write them:
• Writing for posterity – remembering so we don’t forget • Broadening self-awareness and exploring personal identity • Finding your own voice and writing style • Clarifying the purpose and meaning of your life • Discovering what is sacred in your life tuition: $410 ($450) + accommodation & meals.
Our Body’s Tell A body reading program APR 3–6 Marlies Dahler Successful poker players know if the other players have a good or bad hand by reading certain physical signs - the ‘Tell’. At The Haven, a person’s ‘Tell’ would be the expression of their defences or their character armour, created from long-held tension and/or trauma. This armour gives us our character flavour; our unique way of being in the world. However, when these defences become chronic we are unlikely to fully engage in life. In this program, you will become more effective at interpreting defences by:
• Identifying and interpreting body stances • Listening for voice tone, location of the voice and vocal patterns
• Looking for incongruency • Noticing subtle communication clues • Becoming more discerning with body messages • Learning ages and stages of child development • Being able to read the stories our bodies tell tuition: $515 ($575) + accommodation & meals.

Personal Parenting
The Power of Direct Mirroring
OCT 16–18 Denise Goldbeck
APR 23–26, OCT 29–NOV 1 Cathy McNally & Wendy Huntington
This program is for parents, grandparents and caregivers who want to explore and improve their relationships with their children. This process will have a positive impact on their children’s growth, their own sense of self, and their connections with partners and other significant adults. The emphasis is on developing personal, empathetic relationships amongst adults and children.
In this program, participants learn about and practice direct mirroring, a style of feedback that nurtures honest, intimate relationships. Early in life, we adopt messages from others as the ‘truth’ about ourselves. If these remain unexamined, they can shape our lives in unhealthy ways. A deeper understanding of this process is beneficial in relating, parenting, health, making congruent decisions, managing employees, and working with colleagues and team members.
• Learn to adapt the Haven Communication Model for children at different stages of development
• Express deep feelings around parenting and learn to
incorporate responsible expression into your daily life • Develop compassion for yourself as a parent • Explore how your own childhood impacts your parenting • Create in your adult relationships a healthy environment for your own growth and that of your children format: The program will include ideas drawn from developmental psychology and time for group processing and questions. There will be opportunities to practice communication and to explore and express feelings through breath, movement and other experiential forms. Come with your parenting partners if you can. tuition: $410 ($450) + accommodation & meals.
The Power of Balance Embrace love and conquer fear to live fully JUN 5–7 Laurie Anderson & Kim Hudson There are two fundamental drives in the human condition, love and fear. Every day we take in huge amounts of information. Subconsciously we attach a fear or love emotion to the useful information when choices are necessary. We choose to pull in what we love and push back against what we fear. The key is to consciously recognize the fear and love based worlds, and how to move optimally from one to the other. Understanding these two central forces, and how and when to draw upon them, opens our lives to bring balance between deeper meaning and clearer direction; between joy and safety; between enhanced relationships and goal achievement. The program’s main themes are
• Undertanding the light and shadow sides of fear and love • The operating systems of both worlds • Identifying and working with archetypal energies in each world • Combining this knowledge into an individualized pathway towards personal transformation
tuition: $410 ($450) + accommodation & meals.
This program is for you if you want to:
• Unhook from depending on others for self-definition • Be less defensive and reactive in significant relationships • Explore and reduce habitual self-hatred and self-doubt • Form your own opinions rather than abandon yourself to those of others
• Increase your flexibility and creativity • Improve health and wellbeing for yourself and others by
ending patterns of giving, receiving, and believing distorted feedback • Express your inner experiences more clearly in relationships format: This program is an opportunity to reflect on the ways we limit our full expression and creativity and assess the ‘fit’ of our preconceived beliefs about self-esteem, body and self-image. Through a range of experiences, participants will exercise their capacity to update messages that no longer fit, and practice direct mirroring. tuition: $585 ($645) + accommodation & meals.
Process Work Approach to Transformation JUN 19–23 Gary Reiss Many of our biggest struggles are in the area of body symptoms and relationships. We often experience ourselves as victims of these difficulties. Process Oriented Psychology has developed powerful methods for helping us unfold the meaning and deepest energies present in our body and relationship issues. Our tools for this journey include movement, meditation, dreamwork, bodywork, and creative expression, and various forms of relationship processing. As we connect to our deepest selves, our stuck places become fluid again and transformations can occur.
• Discover the meaning and energy behind your body symptoms • Learn how to facilitate your own and other’s process behind their body symptoms
• Find out about your relationship myth • Make conflict more fluid and easy • Learn exciting new methods for creating more love, sex, and intimacy
format: This program will consist of theory, working with individuals and couples in the middle, dyads, triads, and a large group process. Process Work needs to be experienced and thought about. tuition: $795 ($875) + accommodation & meals.

The Quantum Laugh FEB 20–23, JUL 24–27 Carole Ames It may sound corny however laughter really is one of the best medicines. The Quantum Laugh fully employs Haven models and concepts (and some new ones) to help you feel better and to be more effective with whatever is on your plate in life. The Quantum Laugh will energize you, ignite your creativity and refresh your ability to see life’s challenges differently. You’ll laugh yourself into a whole new appreciation of life and your ability to get more of what you want in your life. And it is enormous fun too! This program is for you if you are:
• Interested in shifting your energy, mood and perspective • Willing to laugh at yourself and your world through a re-framing of your experiences
• Looking for new ways to express passion and access creativity • Seeking ways to enliven your relationships and expand your ways of connecting
• Curious about exploring more of your emotional landscape, including what your humour masks, and reveals
format: This is a full-on experiential program which is both fun and challenging. There are creative opportunities to investigate, explore and instigate humour, and to use these as a launch pad to shift your experience in the world. You will explore, create, play and puzzle with what’s funny and what isn’t, and why humour is such an underrated form of therapy. Be prepared to let go, and leave room to be surprised.
Self-Compassion: Making Friends with Your Self NOV 20–23 Wayne Dodge & Jo-Ann Kevala The joy and good humour of self-compassion stand in contrast with the harshness of self-hate. This program explores both ends of this polarity. It will benefit anyone who has tried to be the person they ‘should’ be and, in the process, lost touch with the person within. The program offers an expansion and exploration of the Haven Selves Model that is presented in Come Alive. However, you do not have to have done Come Alive to learn from this program. This program is for you if you:
• Recognize self-harming patterns in your health or relationships • Have found outward success but inner emptiness • Experience destructive addictive tendencies • Experience self-hate • Care for others, but not yourself • Want to become your own best friend format: Using music, guided imagery, gestalt, art, stories and other experiential forms, you will have an opportunity to learn about the paths that lead you away from yourself, and explore paths that can direct you towards self-acceptance. We will explore blame and victimhood, patterns of striving that lead to self-hate, and a variety of ways we can move toward self-compassion. tuition: $585 ($645) + accommodation & meals.

Sensational Contact
Skills 2: Group Leadership
The body in communication
DEC 3–6 Wayne Dodge
APR 23–26 Jane Olynyk & Gillian Enright
This program explores aspects of leading various types of groups, including group formation, designing group experiences and interventions for common problems and issues. It is intended for clinicians and those who supervise staff or lead groups in settings such as volunteer agencies, as well as students in The Haven’s training programs, and Haven assistants and group leaders.
This program focuses on the role of the body in how we communicate. Communication is often assumed to be primarily a mental activity, an exchange of ideas, thoughts, and only occasionally, feelings. Yet it is our bodies that attend to collecting information and sensing our internal and external world. Our bodies respond to all our interactions.
• Open and deepen your communication • Focus on your body process while in communication • Experience static and non-static energy, grounding, and
energetic boundaries • Explore your beliefs about the body • Use body experiences to free up habitual patterns • Distinguish sensations from feelings, to open and create a greater range of sensational responses, and awaken to contact format: Sensational Contact includes activities such as drawing, self-regulatory energy exercises, dramatic forms, movement, visualizations, group sharing, and presentations. Energy models presented include: the chakra system; the medical model of neurological systems; Traditional Chinese Medicine; extra-sensory perception; the Haven models; and body tracking techniques.
Participants in the program will:
• Increase their discernment in group situations • Recognize when to use various methods of work in the group • Learn how to use counter-transference clues to understand events in group
• Learn at least one intervention that is helpful for each group situation examined
• Increase their leadership competence format: This program includes presentations and discussion, as well as demonstration and practice. Participants are encouraged to look at their own experience to develop understanding of working successfully with others in group settings. The group formed by participants in the program itself provides a valuable learning ground of group process. tuition: $585 ($645) + accommodation & meals.
tuition: $570 ($630) + accommodation & meals.

Skills 4: Projection & Transference FEB 20–23 Wayne Dodge This program is an opportunity to directly explore the processes of projection and transference. The extent to which we see our preconceptions in another person, is the extent to which we fail to make direct contact with that person. As we project our own needs, desires, assumptions and processes onto others around us, we miss the person themselves. This projection underlies transference, counter transference, prejudice and contempt. By exploring these processes we can find ways to understand and work with them in the service of respectful, equal, contactful relationship. These are issues of great value for anyone intending to lead groups, supervise staff, or work in the helping professions. Participants in the program will:
• Increase their awareness of their own process • Learn to use counter transference clues to understand interactions
• Consider how and why transference can be helpful and learn methods to increase or decrease it
• Learn appropriate and ethical approaches to transference • Be able to recognize different types of transference • Increase their leadership competence format: This program includes lectures, discussions and experiential exercises. Participants are encouraged to look at their own experience to develop their ability to make contact with others in both their personal and work relationships. tuition: $585 ($645) + accommodation & meals.
Soul Voice JUN 26–28 Karina Schelde You are invited to dive deeper into the voice you may have forgotten but your soul remembers. As you let yourself go into the feeling of your sounds and allow them to guide you, you will start to unravel the layers of your own subconscious where genuine healing can really take place.
format: Experiences will include individual movement meditation and prayer, small group work using movement with words, and whole group circle dances. Processes will be drawn from mindfulness practices, sensory awareness, and Authentic Movement. No previous movement experience is necessary. Spirit in the Song SEP 20–25 Eric Bibb Writing songs is an exciting way to update our connection to ourselves and the people around us. Spirit in the Song is a creative workshop designed to explore the liberating process of following an inspired idea on an inner journey to the birth of a new song. The program includes an opportunity to perform on stage with Eric Bibb and others. format: A piano or keyboard will be available. Please also bring your portable instruments. Experienced songwriters and newcomers welcome! tuition: $825 ($925) + accommodation & meals.
Spirit Body Soul Dance Spirituality through movement NOV 6–8 Catherine Fallis In most ancient and indigenous cultures, movement is an integral part of worship and the ritual celebrations of community life. Many of us have lost touch with the power of our moving bodies to enhance our connection to deeper sources of both individual and collective wisdom. In this program, creative movement, gesture, and sign, are seen as expressions of the wholeness of life, and the sharing of personal and community awareness.
• Have a more embodied experience of your spirituality • Bring movement into your worship and religious life • Experience prayer and meditation through the body and movement
• Explore illness or injury as a spiritual journey • Celebrate life in community with others
This expanded four-day program takes place in a meditative, non-judgmental atmosphere. It provides even more time and space for you to experience a variety of wide-ranging personal writing explorations and the profound insights they generate. This unique program is:
• part journaling workshop • part story circle • part creative-writing seminar • designed with you in mind – if you long to write deeply about your life …
• and in the process, liberate and revitalize your personal writing.
Through the intensive journal-writing process, you are able to see your life issues and patterns more clearly than ever. And in the seeing comes the moving - toward understanding, growth, change and healing. Here is an evaluation from a 2014 participant: “I thought the program might be useful in my quest to return ‘home’ to myself. And it was. What did I like best about it? The instructor’s wisdom. The ease, safety and relaxed atmosphere. The gentle support and acceptance of each of us.” tuition: $820 ($900) + accommodation & meals.
Stirring the Cauldron An erotic workshop for women JUL 31–AUG 3 Elfi Dillon-Shaw This weekend retreat is for women of every age and lifestyle who want to taste the full energetic potential of their erotic body. Sexual energy flowing through the body allows for a more fulfilling erotic life, whether we are in relationship or not. The purpose of arousing this energy is to strengthen our Chi — life energy — for healing purposes, erotic autonomy, and just plain fun!
• In celebration together we will support each other to let go of old ways of living in our body
• Through exercises from the tantric and taoist traditions, we will experience the flow of sexual energy
format: In an atmosphere of consensuality and confidentiality, women will have the opportunity to experience themselves as sacred sexual beings. Knowing that erotic exploration can be fraught with barriers of shame, tension and anxiety, we respect these as each woman’s individual space is honoured. tuition: $510 ($570) + accommodation & meals.

Teens Alive I, II & III
Understanding People
Identity, relationship and independence for teens
From DSM-5, to the big 5, and 5 elements
Teens Alive I AUG 7–10; Teens Alive II AUG 10–13 Teens Alive III AUG 13–16 Linda Nicholls & David Raithby
NOV 12–15 Geoffrey Carr
Teens have an important opportunity in these programs to develop a stronger sense of ‘self’. If you can learn to communicate clearly from strength, you can improve and deepen friendships and relationships and learn to be emotionally selfsupporting rather than dependent on family and others. Teens Alive is designed to encourage you in this process.
Why do people say and do the things they do? In this program we will explore diverse approaches used to understand differences between people. Participants will gain perspective on the overarching issues and pitfalls of trying to categorize people into types or diagnoses, as categories or dimensions. We will examine the methods that we rely on for categorization and diagnosis, from diagnostic interviews and psychological testing to taking the meridian pulses, with consideration of their validity and reliability. We will explore a few approaches in more depth, in particular the DSM-5, the new diagnostic system of the American Psychiatric Association. We will contrast how widely differing approaches might classify the same people, comparing the DSM-5 with the research-based Big 5 personality dimensions, and the 5 Elements of Classical Chinese Medicine.
Teens Alive is for people from 14 to 19 who want to:
• Be comfortable speaking their truth in a responsible way • Develop stronger self-esteem and self-acceptance • Be less defensive and more outgoing • Make relationships work • Deal with conflict • Discuss topics such as vocation, school, sex, music, violence, drugs, parents, family, authorities
• Have fun and get to know other teens • Enjoy The Haven’s beautiful surroundings and facilities format: Teens Alive is divided into three parts, which run back to back and build one on another. Participants can attend one, two, or all three parts; they can be done all in one year, or over two or more years. The only requirement is that they be done in order. Teens will stay at The Haven with a parent or guardian. Participants under the age of 16 require the leaders’ agreement to take Teens Alive III. tuition: $615 ($675) per program + accommodation & meals.
Uncommon Sense OCT 23–25 Sarah Fleury & Ashanti Fraser Uncommon Sense is an “open concept” group which uses a variety of methods including radical energy release work, meditation, movement, feedback, personal encounter, attunement and numerous other liberating techniques to deepen self awareness and access the state of freedom and truth you can be living every moment. Generalized areas of focus for the weekend include support to connect with a deeper, more meaningful sense of self; exploring creative lifestyle changes; strengthening your connection to the physical, emotional and sexual aspects of your being; challenging limiting beliefs; the welcoming of change and transformation; and the expansion of consciousness in everyday life. So, come and free up life energy that may be blocked or inaccessible; let go of fixed ideas about yourself and the universe; allow for a greater degree of openness and transparency of being; benefit from the company of other people; exchange notions of security with the realization of love; and feel the limitless life and spirit in your being. tuition: $410 ($450) + accommodation & meals.

The program emphasizes the importance of trying to understand people from an empathic, compassionate stance based on each person’s history and experience. This program’s main themes are
• Introduction to psychiatric diagnosis (DSM-5 & ICD-10-CM) • Deeper exploration of specific diagnoses of interest to participants
• Reflection on underlying reasons and meaning for “symptoms”
This program is suited to helping professionals, including students and Haven interns (others considered upon request). The Haven Resonance Model This model is taught in Come Alive, the Living Alive Phases, and other programs at The Haven. Our Ideas in Action booklet contains this and several other Haven models. Printed copies are available from The Haven and it can be downloaded from our website: www.haven.ca/resources The Haven Resonance Model describes how people commonly relate to one another in families and society, and with friends and partners, through a basic dynamic of caretaking, pleasing, and conforming. It also describes the possibility of relating on a deeper, more satisfying level, through the revealing to one another of our inner selves. The model is an invitation into self-responsible relational living. The model begins with the idea that each one of us is a unique expression of a sea of ‘universal energy’, which might also be called God, or Ch’i. We are born into this world, individuated but still connected to this sea, as unique, pulsating patterns of free-flowing energy. Two such individuals are represented in the diagram, as a circle and a triangle. As we enter this world, however, we are dependent on others for our survival. Our parents are the first people we encounter in this caretaking role, and we soon learn how best to win their attention, by pleasing them and conforming to their expectations. This first experience is replicated in many different arenas as we grow up and move through life. The square in the diagram therefore represents our parents, and also, more generally, the norms and demands of the society we grow up in, expressed through the authority of family, community, education, religion, and so on. Our response to the demands of this caretaking square is to surrender much of our individual difference, in order to please, to conform, to fit in – ultimately, to become ‘square’ ourselves. Even if we ‘rebel’ against the demands of society, we still tie ourselves to it by living in reaction against it. As we continue along this path the free flow of our energy begins to contract and freeze. This is represented in the diagram by the boxes around the circle and the triangle. As these boxes rigidify, we begin to lose our connection with universal energy (shown in the diagram with three small lines below the boxes). Often, we set out to recover a sense of connection through seeking love and relationships. In place of our original connection to one another through universal energy, we learn to ‘take care of’ and ‘look after’ one another (as represented in the diagram by the arrows between the circle and the triangle). This is society’s dominant paradigm of what ‘love’ is, and it is what we have most experienced in our upbringing. In developing our primary and other relationships, we look for people we can look after and who will take care of us. Again we surrender our individuality and strive to please. The cost of this is that we further abandon our

universal energy authentic selves and often remain with a sense of loneliness, isolation, and meaninglessness. As we experience dissatisfaction in our relationships, we may become locked instead in unproductive conflict or in hopelessness and apathy. Another way to connect is through a process of self-revelation and sharing. We think this is the process that so often begins in Come Alive and other programs at The Haven. As people begin to breathe and experience their feelings and share these with one another, other members of the group experience their own feelings in resonance. A kind of ‘thawing’ takes place and the rigidified boxes around each of us begin to melt and soften. We can then reconnect with the universal energy of which we all are a part and begin to relate to one another through that energy as well as through the various roles of our lives. In so doing we can add greatly to the quality of our lives and relationships. The two other models described in The Haven’s Ideas in Action booklet, as well as the concepts of power and strength and the suggestions for breathing, can help us introduce into our relationships this kind of connection through self-revelation, sharing and resonance. Breathing, the Communication Model, and the self-compassion cycle are tools we can use to gradually soften the boxes we have constructed around ourselves and learn to relate to one another in deeper and more satisfying ways. In relationships of this sort we can know ourselves better and experience clarity, loving and connection.

By doing so we can greatly enhance our health and our relationships. Based on a five-day course Dr Peterson has developed and led over some 15 years in North America and Southeast Asia, and drawing on more than 40 years of personal and professional experience in the field, this book contains theoretical models and practical ideas that will challenge you to transform your view of anger and the role it plays in your life. In the Community The Haven is an integral part of the Gabriola Island community. The Wong and McKeen Phoenix Auditorium is probably the finest venue on the island for music, theatre, and dance. Further enhancing Gabriola’s reputation as The Isle of The Arts, in 2014 we once again partnered with the Gabriola Arts Council for our Artist-in-Residence program. We also host community meetings and workshops organized by local groups. Our programs attract people from around the world, who contribute to the local culture and economy in many ways. The Haven is a long-standing member of the Gabriola Island Chamber of Commerce and we are one of the largest employers on the island, offering year-round opportunities. Wherever possible we rely on local businessess to meet our needs. We are donors to the Gabriola Medical Clinic and support a number of local charities. We are proud to be part of this vibrant community and are grateful to all our friends on the island for your many contributions to our work and to the lives of the people who come to The Haven.
