Anger, Boundaries and Safety FEB 8–11, MAY 3–6, OCT 4–7 Greg Gurel Some people use the fear associated with unsafe, unboundaried anger expression to control. Others limit their lives by continually trying to avoid any hint of anger. With either approach, the emotional, physical, and relational consequences are life diminishing. In this program you will learn that anger is a natural feeling that exists in all of us and when expressed in a safe, boundaried manner can be passionate, life enhancing, and beneficial to relationships. $640 ($700) + accom. & meals.

IBP emphasizes the importance of relationships and focuses upon awareness at all levels, resulting in profound life-enhancing transformation. $430 ($470) + accom. & meals.
Boundaries: The Vital Edge JUN 21–24 Linda Nicholls Clear, compassionate boundaries are the key to living in the present – passionately, proactively, and even playfully! A boundary is not a "thing" – instead, defining a personal boundary is an active process that is more accurately described as "boundary-ing." Discerning, expressing and dialoguing about personal boundaries will strengthen your ability to know who you really are, to access creativity, energy, health and aliveness, and to enjoy greater intimacy and clarity in your personal and work relationships. $630 ($690) + accom. & meals.

Breath is the integrating force for the multiple dimensions of our whole-person existence. Come Alive Integration Online: Bringing Haven Home After every two or three Come Alive programs we offer an online opportunity to support yourself in integrating what you learn in Come Alive into your daily life. There is NO CHARGE for this. Instead we encourage participants to support other people to attend Come Alive and other programs by donating as they choose to The Haven's Financial Aid program. These programs consist of three weekly 1.5-hour video-conference sessions, with opportunities to check in, discuss and apply the Haven models, and practice breathing and other experiential exercises. You will also be encouraged to connect with other participants during the week, and the leaders will offer you a 30-minute private session. Dates are posted on the website. After every two or three Come Alives we email invitations to people who participated in those programs. You can then register by replying to the email. This is very popular and places are limited, so if you are interested, reply straight away!
Honestly, I liked everything. The program itself was life changing, the facilitators and assistants were warm and supportive. The food and accommodations supplied were good, and it was an all over great experience. k.m. Where do I start? The grounds, the air, the people, the feeling I had when I arrived … it was like coming home. The leaders and interns were fantastic, the connections I made with others and most importantly with myself ... life changing. Beauty everywhere. a.b. I learned to embrace, accept, let go of grief I’ve held for 30 years. a.w. When I returned home after the program I was approached by many people asking, “What was it like?” … My answer was, “You just have to do it to find out!” I have felt things I have not felt in my lifetime. I feel alive! l.j. My experience at the Come Alive was profound and will have a lasting positive effect on my life and all those I am connected with forever. a.s. I didn't know what to expect with Come Alive, and it was a truly transformative experience. I connected so deeply with everyone there, and walked away with a deeper relationship with myself, better communication skills, and a whole new group of close friends, and all in only five days. So profoundly beautiful. j.c.
Couples Alive
Couples Alive III: Day to Day
Couples Alive I: Foundation
FEB 12–16 Sandey McCartney & David Raithby
communication and boundaries
This program opens the door to the abundance of living-loving opportunities in our everyday life. In a thoughtful, caring, and engaging setting, couples will learn how to shake the familiar, and embrace the novelty of new possibilities. Beginning with common issues, and digging deeper, couples co-create their unique common ground. From this foundation new ways to foster loving aliveness can be crafted through work, play, challenge and pleasure.
FEB 8–12 Sandey McCartney & David Raithby JUN 8–12 CrisMarie Campbell & Susan Clarke OCT 28–NOV 1 CrisMarie Campbell & Susan Clarke This program begins with an in-depth exploration of communication with a distinctly couples perspective. A variety of breathing and bodyawareness experiences help build a foundation for connection and growth and couples then explore the ‘boundary-ing’ process — identifying and expressing wishes, wants and preferences — and examine the impact and possibilities of this self-definition for their relationship.
living and loving
$2000 ($2160) per couple + accom. & meals. Discounts are available if you take more than one program in a year or bring another couple. See haven.ca for details.
My partner and I just completed your Couples Alive I program. By day two we both understood without a doubt that we had been living in a vicious circle of power struggle and retreat, only to return for another struggle. By the end of that day we recognized with relief that there was a way out. By day three we were able to commit to working in that direction and in fact were actively practicing the tools we were being taught to achieve this. By day four we realized that we had laughed more in the last day than probably the whole last year. d.b. & b.j.
Couples in Conflict
Dynamic Empathy
APR 13–15, SEP 28–30 Cathy McNally & Ian Curtin
MAY 17–20 Toby Macklin & Jane Olynyk
This program is for couples who are having difficulty resolving conflicts and may be considering separation. You will not be told whether you ‘should’ stay together or not, since only you can make that decision. You will be offered valuable tools for dealing with conflict, rebuilding goodwill, regarding one another with dignity and respect, and, if you so decide, separating with your self-esteem intact. Each couple will work together as a pair in a small group setting and will have a private counselling session to address their own particular issues. $600 ($640) + accom. & meals.
Dynamic Dialogue APR 26–29 Cathy McNally & Jennifer Hilton NOV 1–4 Jane Kilthei & Jennifer Hilton Through dialogue people can come together in relationship, reach new understanding, and form a new basis from which to think and act – even when they have fundamental differences. In our lives today – at home, at work, in our communities and the world – the need for dialogue is urgent. The health and aliveness of all living beings and the planet depends on it. This program delves deeply into The Haven’s Communication Model … and beyond. $630 ($690) + accom. & meals.
This program offers practical and challenging methods to become more empathetic, inclusive and loving, at the same time as strengthening your own sense of self. In the framework of Bennet Wong and Jock McKeen’s Dynamic Empathy Model, you will challenge yourself to ‘walk in the shoes’ of others, while maintaining your own perspective and boundaries. $605 ($665) + accom. & meals.
Empathy & Freedom, Body & Mind: 5-Day Immersion in Nonviolent Communication APR 29–MAY 4 Angela Walkley & Mitch Miyagawa Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a powerful set of communication tools – and much more. It is a response to a fundamental question: How do we break free from our beliefs, behaviours, and systems that disconnect us from our embodied experience, and from each other as humans? Through a dynamic dance of activity and stillness, movement and thought, Angela and Mitch will take you deeper than the listening/speaking elements of NVC – through your “body” to your inner signals and “felt-sense,” and through your “mind” to a critical exploration of concepts of “needs,” power, and freedom. $1025 ($1125) + accommodation and meals.
For expanded descriptions, visit haven.ca
Eros & Intimacy, Sex & Spirit for Couples MAY 18–21 Elfi Dillon-Shaw & Gary Dillon This program offers couples new ways of igniting their erotic flame and supports them to remember each other in their physical wants and gifts. Elfi Dillon-Shaw and her husband Gary Dillon present experiential exercises using breath, voice, movement, sensuous touch and lovingpresence meditations from the wisdom teachings of Tantra and Taoism, along with ideas rooted in the revolutionary edges of modern biological and physical science. $570 ($630) per person + accom. & meals.
Family Reconstruction AUG 24–30 Maria Gomori The objective of Virginia Satir's Family Reconstruction process is to revisit our family roots and understand our parents or childhood caregivers as people, not just in their stereotyped roles. It is a powerful psychodynamic process that provides an opportunity to update the past and reduce the negative impact of early experiences. By letting go of what is no longer useful you will gain the freedom to make new choices and access deeper acceptance of yourself and others. $1350 ($1470) + accom. & meals.
Five Element Practicum NOV 22–25 Jane Olynyk Oriental Medicine Philosophy, particularly Five Element Theory, is a rich holistic model for viewing ourselves, our world and processes of change. This program focuses on its emotional, mental, physical and spiritual aspects. We examine harmony and disharmony within us, emphasizing that contact with another is essential to any process of change or healing. We review how to assess disharmony, including pulse taking, and work with acupuncture points to facilitate the movement of Qi. New Horizons: Phase III or some prior knowledge of Oriental Medicine is required. $570 ($630) + accom. & meals.
Gestalt: The Art & Practice NOV 8–11 Carole Ames & Graemme Brown In this invigorating, ‘hands-on’ program, you will learn about the art and practice of gestalt, a classic experiential form of self-discovery and an effective tool for “completing the circle” of unresolved life issues. The term gestalt refers to a practice or exercise; a school of psychotherapy; and the concept of wholeness. We examine all three, with most time focused on gestalt as an exercise. We explore both the technical and the more subjective elements of this approach. Creative twists combining other techniques are included. This program will benefit clinical counsellors, group leaders, seekers and guides: anyone looking for effective and embodied techniques for working with self and others. $660 ($720) + accom. & meals.
Get Real: Seeing Yourself, Experiencing Another FEB 14–18 Cathy McNally, Graemme Brown, Jennifer Hilton, Joann Byres As very young children we form beliefs about ourselves from the messages we receive from the key people in our lives. Unconsciously, we hold these as ‘truths’ which can significantly impact our self-confidence, how we live, how we experience and interact with others. In this program, through a range of experiences, you will gain a ‘real’ perspective on such ‘truths’ and update the messages and beliefs that no longer fit today. Key to this process is learning and practicing Direct Mirroring, which nurtures honest and open communication. You can shift from reacting to authentic responding in relationships that matter, at home, work, and in your communities. $820 ($900) + accom. & meals.
concerns related to environment, poverty, or war. Through a range of forms, including ceremony, participants will have opportunities to learn about the grieving process, express their feelings, grieve fully, and develop a map toward deepening inner strength and wholeness. $670 ($730) + accom. & meals.
have a chance to define ourselves and relate in ways that more truly reflect who we are. This program is an opportunity to tap that potential! $550 ($590) + accom. & meals.
Inner Wisdom for Women
The nature of our early attachment to our primary caregivers creates a blueprint for our ability to connect to others throughout our lives. When we become aware of our attachment issues, we can better negotiate the challenges of close relationships today. The Haven Communication Model Communication is central to what we teach at The Haven. You can use our Communication Model to improve your relationships and to learn about yourself and others. It exemplifies our focus on self-responsibility, curiosity, embodiment and relationship. There's only room for a taste of it here ... join us for a program (Come Alive is a good place to start) to learn more and experience how it works in practice! The model highlights how various elements can contribute to the process of communication. By understanding this process, we can move through it more consciously and with more awareness of our choices. In this way we can experience personal growth while deepening, enriching and clarifying our relationships. One of the circles in the diagram opposite contains the word perception. This refers to our ability to take in ‘data’ through our senses – sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste. In itself, this data has no meaning ... but we are very good at making meaning of it. We make sense of all this information through interpretation. We talk about interpretations with words such as “I think,” “I imagine,” “I believe,” or “I guess.” Along with these interpretations we experience body feelings, which are broadly either ‘positive’ (for example, I feel open, warm, close) or ‘negative’ (for example, I feel closed, cold, distant). Interestingly, the common phrase “I feel that you are …” doesn't describe a feeling; it is usually an interpretation, better expressed as “I think that you are …” Distinguishing between perceptions, interpretations and feelings can be very helpful in understanding our own experience and in communicating it to others. Here's an example. I see that my partner’s eyes are red and watery (this is the perception). Perhaps I think that my partner is upset about something I said (my interpretation). Perhaps I feel ‘distant,’ thinking my partner shouldn't be so sensitive! Or I may feel ‘warm’ and want to move closer. Either way, the point is that I have done all this by myself; I have noticed something, made meaning of it and felt something about it; depending on their personal contexts, other people may notice, think and feel other things. All this then influences what I want (my intention) and how I act. However, while all this is going on, my partner’s reality may be quite different. What if, rather than being sad, my partner has been having contact lens problems? Or perhaps they really are sad, but about something unrelated to me. My interpretation may not agree with my partner’s experience at all. If I don’t ask and check my interpretation, I may never know. Many people realize when they come to The Haven and practice this model how profoundly and subtly their unchecked interpretations have affected their lives and their relationships. Relationships based on such assumptions often run into difficulty, and the unchecked stories we tell ourselves can lead us into dark places. The key is to check our interpretations with the other person, and to listen with curiosity to what they tell us. In this way we can bridge the gap
between our separate experiences and move into dialogue. Without this, we may miss out on getting to know and understand the important people in our lives, and learning about ourselves and how we see the world. It can be challenging to realize that none of us is either ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ in this kind of process; our view points simply differ. When we let go a little of our desire to be right, we can activate our curiosity, and life can get more interesting! The Haven Communication Model can help you understand and express yourself more clearly and congruently, and expand your world to include other peoples’ realities. It can be a great way to get 'unstuck' in the stories we tell ourselves and the impasses we sometimes find ourselves in with others. Come to The Haven and give it a try!
