The Indiana Design Center, home to 20 design professionals, boasts several hugely beneficial treasures. For instance, they offer “Designer on Call,” which enables homeowners to connect with a designer for a complimentary 50-minute consultation. Andrea Kleymeyer, the center’s Marketing Director, suggests that potential clients browse their website to review designers’ portfolios and determine the best match for their project. A Designer On Call appointment can be requested on the website. “This is a casual way for homeowners to connect with a designer and see if they could be a good fit,” says Kleymeyer. A number of local artists are featured throughout the building, including Barry Lantz Art and photographers Christine Merchent and Eva Johansen Correale. In COATS WRIGHT ART & DESIGN showroom addition, Coats Wright Art & Design is features work by currently featuring work by Carmel-based Carmel-based artist J.D. The Weathervane showcases new and antique furniture in the gallery, along with accessories like Turkish dough bowls, glassware, cutting boards, vintage scales and rustic décor. “The mix of art and décor in the gallery exhibits how various art and design styles can live in harmony,” says Kleymeyer. What’s unique about Coats Wright Art & Design is that it’s a fully-furnished showroom that demonstrates how to mix different furniture and artistic styles. “It’s not a white-walls gallery with art hanging in open spaces,” Kleymeyer continues. “It’s a furnished, comfortable environment that showcases how interior design and art can relate.” Andrea Kleymeyer

Custom jeweler Marc Aronstam, of Aronstam Fine Jewelers, is also located inside the Indiana Design Center. “The art of the home, jewelry and handcrafted things all work together,” says Kleymeyer. “Marc also has interesting items for the home like geodes and rare, natural materials that can be used as décor.” Kleymeyer notes that Aronstam is known for helping customers reimagine and redesign antique family stones into new contemporary pieces. “We’re really proud of the fact that such custom work is happening here in our building,” says Kleymeyer. HEATING & COOLING

HOMESENSE HEATING & COOLING:

Hot Upstairs, Cold Downstairs? W E H AV E T H E S O L U T I O N ! by Brian Schutt

DUCTLESS MINI SPLIT systems provide high capacity and targeted cooling and heating to hard to condition rooms, finished attics, and four season rooms.

Having a big temperature difference between upstairs and downstairs is nothing new in Indianapolis. While the physics of heat rising is a big part of the issue, many homes can see comfort improvement with targeted solutions. Here are a couple of examples of some of these targeted investments you can make. Adding zones to your existing ductwork directs airflow to the spaces that are still hot, while stopping airflow to the places already cool. This is done through a damper or dampers that are installed in the duct system and are connected to a thermostat on the second floor. Then, if the temperature is comfortable on the first floor but not on your second floor, the airflow can be directed to the warmer space. Another option is upgrading to a variable speed furnace. Owning a furnace that has a variable speed blower motor is a complete HOMESENSE HEATING change to how traditional & COOLING furnaces operate. The new 317.670.0171 TrustHomesense.com energy efficient furnaces have

blowers that circulate almost all of the time, instead of a furnace coming on and going off based upon demand. The benefits of this include more dehumidification, a better balance in temperature between floors, and higher level of filtration because the air is passing through the system more frequently. For a more targeted solution, there is the ductless mini split (shown above), which is one of the most exciting innovations in the heating and cooling industry recently. These smaller systems allow for targeted airflow to the most challenging areas of your home. Because of the larger square footage and vaulted ceilings in master bedrooms, many home owners in Carmel, Zionsville and Fishers have added a ductless mini split to provide cooling relief throughout the summer. “With everything we do, our goal is to build lifelong clients,” said Brady Wilson, Homesense General Manager. “We build our solutions around what is going to make a lasting impact for homeowners’ comfort and peace of mind.” Homesense offers a free consultation to evaluate comfort issues like a hot second floor. The Wait is Over M O N O N 1 6 D E V E LO P M E N T by Courtney Walker Pope

Beautiful streets, happy neighbors, new homes – three components coming to a revitalized area of Downtown Indianapolis in the King Park Neighborhood called Monon 16. For years, residents around the Monon Trail in between 16th and 21st Street have patiently waited for new neighbors to join the community. The Re-Development Group (RDG) is proud to collaborate with David Weekly Homes to build 60+ new homes in this neighborhood! This location and development makes it one of the most interesting

places to live close to downtown and at affordable entry levels. “We believe downtown communities should be developed thoughtfully and holistically. Through a collaborative effort with King Park Development Corporation, we are providing a diversified development that protects legacy residents and also offers an opportunity for new homeowners,” said RDG’s CEO Patrick Dubach. The Re-Development Group was incorporated in 1998, and Monon 16 supports their mission as explained by

Dubach. “Targeting vacant lots and boarded housing stock while collaborating with non-profit community development partners allows us to protect established home owners, keeping the redevelopment work as inclusive as possible,” Dubach said. Interested in building a home in the Monon 16 Development? Each lot is 40' x 140'. CONCRETE

CUSTOM CONCRETE:

Custom Concrete of Westfield is building foundations to benefit communities across the state. Recently, Custom Concrete has started work on a multifamily facility across the street from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The project consists of a parking garage, retail shops, and apartments in downtown Speedway. The town of Speedway, Indiana has been experiencing new growth, and with it comes new centers of commerce and places to live. The multi-family project is the first the town has seen in 20 years. Custom Concrete is responsible for the foundations, slabs, and sidewalks. Project completion is anticipated in late 2018/early 2019, with plenty of time to spare for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500. “It’s exciting to be a part of the growth of our neighboring communities,” said Custom Concrete Senior Vice President Jason Ells. “To pour the foundation for what will become a center for commerce, a gathering spot, and homes to numerous families makes our work more enjoyable.” Custom Concrete has long been a supporter of community-building and philanthropic initiatives in Central Indiana, participating as an organization, and as individual team members, with the intention of bettering the community around them. In one of those community-building initiatives, Custom Concrete helped the Open Doors Pantry of Washington Township bring to life the foundation for their new Open Doors Pantry in Westfield, Indiana. Open Doors Pantry of Westfield broke ground in 2016 and finished in time for a grand opening last spring. Open Doors of Washington Township has served over 13,000 families with over 670,000 pounds of food. To learn more about how you can help Open Doors Pantry of Westfield, Indiana, visit opendoorswestfield.org. MAINTENANCE & RESTORATION

WATERGATE ROOFING:

Don’t Wait to Replace Your Roof by Millie Hindes

Deciding whether to repair or replace your roof can be a tough choice to make. If several contractors have told you it’s time to bite the bullet and replace your roof, don’t wait another year to have it done. Replacing a roof is similar to changing the tires on your car. You don’t want to wait until there is zero tread on your tires, and run the risk of having a blow out on the freeway. TREAT YOUR ROOF THE SAME WAY. HERE ARE A FEW SIGNS THAT YOUR ROOF MAY NEED MORE THAN A BAND AID:  AGE: Roofs in Indiana need to be replaced once every seven years, due to hail and wind damage. Even if a roof has not been directly impacted by storms, age and inclement weather give roofs a lifespan of around 20-25 years.

 SHINGLES: If a roof isn’t nailed properly, it can appear to be in good shape. High winds, however, can cause several shingles to blow up, but not off a roof, trapping water underneath them, leading to a roof leak. The shingles then settle back down, leading you to believe your roof is fine. At this point, you should have your roof inspected, to make sure all your shingles are securely fastened.  GRANULES IN THE GUTTER: This is a sign your roof is getting older, and weather is taking a toll on it. Granules help keep the sun from baking the asphalt in your shingles. Once most of your granules are gone, your shingle tabs will lose their adhesion, possibly causing leaks, and your air conditioning bill will most likely increase.  TWO LAYERED ROOFS: Putting an additional layer on a roof is never a good idea! The shingles age twice as quickly as single layered roofs. And if there is ever a leak, be ready for twice the expenses. Hopefully the leak will show up in a timely manner, instead of a slow, hidden leak that rots the decking.

 CURLING, BLISTERS AND BUCKLING: These problems are all caused by inadequate ventilation of your roof. If ignored for too long, the heat and moisture trapped in your attic can cause the decking to rot, and possibly cause mold or mildew growth, and your home to be significantly warmer during the hotter months.

For additional information, or to schedule an inspection, call Watergate Roofing at 317-771-5489 or visit them online at watergateroofing.com. THE TIME IS NOW: If several contractors have told you it’s time to replace your roof, don’t wait another year to have it done.

CUSTOM HOME BUILDER

KENT SHAFFER HOMES:

Third Generation of Custom Home Builders Comes to Chatham Hills by Aaron Hale

2 0 H AV E N

When you begin the process of either building or buying your dream home it can be difficult to settle on the builder that’s right for you, especially when there are seemingly endless contractors vying for your business. Kent Shaffer Homes is perhaps the only custom home business in Central Indiana that draws on three generations of knowledge and expertise. Growing up in the business as an electrician for his father, also a custom builder, Kent Shaffer made the transition to builder/designer of fine homes over 30 years ago. Kent has become renowned for his craftsmanship, attention to detail, integrity, and honesty over the course of his career. After making dream homes a reality for clients in Geist, Carmel, Zionsville, and Downtown Indianapolis, Chatham Hills in Westfield is now proudly offering Kent Shaffer homes to clients.

“As a wife and mother of two beautiful children, I love the feeling of creating a place to make memories and put down roots for other families.” – KRISTEN HALE Kent Shaffer Homes

ALL IN THE FAMILY Kristen Hale (pictured with her family) joined her father, Kent Shaffer, to become the 3rd generation of builders in Kent Shaffer Homes.

Continuing the family tradition of excellence in custom home craftsmanship, Kent is now joined by his daughter Kristen, making her the 3rd generation of builders in the family. Kristen grew up around job sites with her father before graduating from Purdue University’s illustrious Construction Engineering Program. Kristen offers the client a unique blend of both the timeless traditions and knowledge of her family’s business with a more contemporary woman’s touch to design and detail. Using a hands-on approach, rather than outsourcing to office staff and jobsite foremen, allows Kent Shaffer Homes to beat most competitors’ pricing and customer satisfaction. “We loved the one-on-one approach Kent and Kristen offered us during the building of our dream home in Stonegate (Zionsville). They walked us through every step of the process, from design to finishes. When we called them, it wasn’t a secretary picking up and taking a message, it was always Kent or Kristen. They were on the job site nearly every day, and it was great having two trusted builders like Kent and Kristen to rely on,” said a recent Zionsville client. The process and quality Kent Shaffer Homes brings to bare on a jobsite has made it an industry leader in the state. Very few builders can claim to build homes for repeat clients. Even fewer builders can claim to have built homes for the nowgrown children of previous clients. “As a wife and mother of two beautiful children, I love the feeling of creating a place to make memories and put down roots for other families,” says Kristen. “I always begin with listening to what the client has envisioned, rather than telling them my vision. Pricing, then scheduling, and ultimately building fall in line from there with as little stress and surprises to the

client as possible. This should be an enjoyable process for my clients.” To make the process less stressful, Kristen has brought modern techniques to pair with time-tested skills. Using online BuilderTrend scheduling, and exceeding industry energy efficiency standards are just a couple of expectations on each job site. To better improve the client’s experience, Kristen is also one of the top licensed brokers with Century 21 Scheetz. This unique understanding of the fluctuating real estate market adds another level of expertise, advice, and resources to be placed at the client’s disposal. Blending proven techniques with new technologies over multiple generations has led Kent Shaffer Homes to build some of the most beautiful homes in neighborhoods like Villages of West Clay, Stonegate, the Historic Herron Morton Neighborhood (Downtown Indy), and now Chatham Hills. Clients have the choice of building on one of the premium lots Kent Shaffer Homes owns or you can have Kent and Kristen make your dream a reality on your own lot. WINDOW TREATMENTS

DRAPERY STREET:

Window Treatments for the Modern Home

The window coverings in this modern home are recessed, making them invisible until they are automatically closed using PowerView motorization.

THE MODERN HOME MYTH

INSTALLATION IS KEY

Many people incorrectly believe you need to avoid window treatments altogether to obtain a minimalist look. When you skip window treatments, you miss out on the many benefits they offer. You can forget privacy! Neighbors and passers-by will be able to gaze right into your house. Window treatments provide a layer of security and without them, you might as well put a “not home” sign on your lawn. Additionally, well-constructed window coverings offer energy-efficiency, protect your home furnishings from fading, and reduce sun glare. It is possible to achieve a clean aesthetic and let in natural light while also obtaining privacy. The trick is working with a knowledgeable window treatment expert who is well-versed in the different products, operating systems, and installation techniques that allow for each of these goals to be met.

Precise installation is key in modern home design. One way to achieve beautifully clean lines is by recessing window coverings into the ceiling or walls, hiding them fully until they are closed. Pair recessed installation with motorization for the ultimate combination of modern design and functionality. According to Caryn O’Sullivan, owner of Drapery Street, “We often hear of clients foregoing window coverings because they don’t think they can do modern and window treatments together. If you have ever been to a New York Hotel, you know that is not the case. You just need to have a plan. We consult with our clients starting pre-construction.” There is no reason to sacrifice privacy, security and energy-efficiency for a minimalist look. Proper installation of the right window treatments can help you achieve the clean lines and natural light that are quintessential to modern home design. Contact Drapery Street at 317-399-1746 or visit draperystreet.com to learn more.

Bigger is better – or at least preferred these days as the hot new design trend in tiling involves large format tiles that are 24x48 inches. “Everything is moving towards the larger tiles,” says Matt Knowles, branch manager of Daltile. “This is true of both commercial and residential projects.” For years smaller tiles were all the rage, but over time the size preference has continually increased. According to Knowles, customers once requested 6x6, then it moved to 12x12, and then 18x18. Now, it has jumped yet again to even larger sizes. Daltile, which has more than 200 branches and 11 manufacturing facilities across the U.S., makes these tiles available in both elemental and industrial selections, as well as in a variety of colors and “People primarily finishes. love the look Giant panoramic porcelain surfaces (available in 63x126 of larger tiles inches & 64x127 inches) are because that also wildly popular in hotels means fewer and office buildings on walls, countertops, and interior grout lines, which flooring. RENOVATION & REMODELING

ACo:

LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE by Joe Golc

It’s been said that home is not a place, it’s a feeling… one of warmth and security and happiness – one of love. It has the power to put your worries at ease and the power to transform four walls into something more. Something that makes you say you LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE. This is how we want your home to feel. Yet as many of us know, sometimes creating, let alone finding, that feeling is easier said than done. But no one said you had to do it alone. That’s why ACo exists. To help you create a space where you love to live. And while some may see ACo as just another company in the renovation business, the truth is, we’re more than that – we’re a company in the home business.

A home has the power to put your worries at ease and the power to transform four walls into something more.

Because if you truly love where you live, you always feel at home. And that principle has been our guiding star since our inception – it’s molded our mission and inspired our motto of “love where you live.” And it starts with our approach. By simplifying the remodel process and eliminating the fear of the unknown, we put homeowners at ease. And that’s really what love where you live is about, relieving anxiety – of discomfort, of choice, and of uncertainty. Because let’s face it… building a new home or remodeling a current one is a giant undertaking. The sheer amount of choices and decisions you have to make can be frustrating and even overwhelming. But our cultivated team of experts, specializing in everything from design to construction, partner with you through every step of the renovation process. And through constant, open communication, clear deliverables, and welldefined expectations, we guide you through the creation of your luxurious kitchen, lavish bath, beautiful cabinets, or stunning flooring space so you can truly love where you live. Because at the end of the day, if you don’t love where you live, do you really ever feel home? And now you can find out.

TIMOTHY HOMES:

Built on a Lasting Relationship by Courtney Walker Pope and Tim Logan

Tim Logan, owner of Timothy Homes, began his custom home building journey in the late 1980’s. Working for two family owned businesses, he learned the ins and outs of the custom home building industry. In a time when the market was hot, Logan saved up enough money to build his own spec home in 1997. Turning heads and creating lasting relationships, Timothy Homes was building 6-8 fully custom homes per year, then the market crashed. Like most of the population, Tim and his brother had to get creative with their business and turned to remodeling, house flipping, and even housing a real estate brokerage within their business. With that strategy, Timothy Homes has grown every year since 2010, “We are diversified and feel we could weather any change in the economy,” said Logan. When asked what has built this successful business, Logan explained, “My philosophy has always been to treat the customer fairly and ensure complete satisfaction throughout the entire building process, and beyond.” Keeping the business within the family, Logan and his brother, co-owners, are the front line

for every channel. “I think our customers appreciate the fact they do not have to talk with 10 people before talking with the owners,” said Logan. All decisions also come from the two owners, rather than through site superintendents. Another building block to Timothy Homes’ foundation of success is their 20-year relationship with suppliers and subcontractors. One of those notable, two-decade relationships has been with McComb Pella Window and Doors. “McComb Pella has supplied all of our windows since 1997. From their sales team, to delivery schedule and follow up after the sale – no window and door supplier is better. I often tell people if they want to see how a successful business is created, go check out McComb Pella Window and Doors. They have done an outstanding job of organizing and running their company,” Logan stated. Timothy Homes’ dedication to customer satisfaction and their strong vendor relationships have allowed them to rely one hundred percent on word of mouth referrals with no paid advertising in their twenty years of business. “We also believe the best way

G&G CUSTOM HOMES:

Design Dreams Made Simple, Stress-Free by Courtney Walker Pope

In an exciting building market, we understand it can become overwhelming with the array of choices available to consumers. G&G Custom Homes simplifies those choices and alleviates stress by pairing every custom client with their Interior Design Selections Coordinator, Hilari Goris. Hilari has become an expert at bringing the Hilari Goris client’s dreams, Pinterest and Houzz boards to life! Let’s walk through the process with Hilari…

1

I begin working with the clients as soon as digging the foundation begins! We try to make sure every client has plenty of time to make those big decisions by staying on track with builder deadlines.

2

To narrow in on our client’s style, we have them send any inspiration images they’ve collected and I find the correlation.

3

We meet with vendors throughout the Indianapolis Metro area. At each meeting, clients can expect to receive drawings, material samples and picture packets to collect along the way. Each time we meet, their story begins to come together!

4

The building process typically takes nine to ten months and I’m by their side for around eight of those months. Post closing, I typically continue to help clients with space planning, window treatments, furniture, art, and accessories. I love the building process, but also enjoy seeing them move in and making it all come together for the family.

If you’re in the market for a custom home, consider building with G&G Custom Homes. Hilari and the G&G Team are excited to have you on board! Schedule a free consultation and get your questions answered by visiting their website at ggcustomhomes.com or calling 317-418-7665.

“WE’RE ONE OF THE FEW PLACES THAT’S A ONE-STOP SHOP TO SELECT STONE FOR THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR HOME AND YOUR BACKYARD.” – JOHN SMITSON owner, Stone Center of indiana

STONE CENTER OF INDIANA EXPANDS TO THE WESTFIELD AREA

For nearly fifty years, the Stone Center of Indiana has been providing Indianapolis area contractors, builders, and homeowners with the largest selection of natural stone products in Central Indiana. Now, the Stone Center has taken things to another level. With the opening of a second location near Westfield, the company has given customers even more reasons to love stone. The original location on East 65th Street has developed a following thanks to its stone playground which the Stone Center calls “The Great Wall.” It’s a two-story one-hundred-yard long expanse of stone samples, many of which are built into an actual threedimensional, so customers may see how a finished product appears up close. As great of a showroom as the Stone Center has at the East 65th Street location, when the need to expand became apparent, there was no available property

THE STONE adjacent to the center that was large enough. CENTER TEAM: “Our sales increased over 55% in four years (l to r) John McClain, along with our customer base,” owner Brooke Gregg, Shawn Campbell, John Smitson says, “So we needed to find Brad Smith, John a property that was already zoned for open Smitson, Matt industrial use and that was larger than two Riester, and Alan Drane. acres. This new property in Westfield fits the bill.” The new location near Westfield’s Grand Park offers its own brand of stone extravaganza. It features a gorgeous showroom offering over 250 stone samples and three conference areas for collaboration between designers, architects, landscape contractors, and customers. Each room is big enough to bring plans, paint samples and other materials to select the perfect match for their projects. If that isn’t enough, there are over two acres of outdoor living design ideas. With so many great features, it is poised to become as popular as the original. Says Smitson, “We bought this land and built this center, so we could have something to grow into. This place is an investment in our future.” Smitson has grown accustomed to rapid growth in the four years since he bought the Stone Center. As he continues to learn more about the stone industry, the company’s solid history and reputation provides a strong foundation for him. When it opened in 1969, the Stone Center quickly established its reputation for having the largest selection of stone products brought in from all over for use in the home, outdoor living and landscape. The popularity of outdoor living space now requires a selection of stone and materials from over twenty states and three countries coupled with fire pits, fireplaces, and grill islands to meet the needs of customers. The Stone Center has kept stone relevant through the decades it has been in business. The way it’s displays have evolved is a big example of that. “In the beginning, the Stone Center was just a dirt lot with stone products on pallets. It looked like a giant rock quarry,” says Alan Drane, Director of Landscape Sales. “Then we made the decision to pave our lot and make our displays more experiential. The first time we saw a customer drive up, get out of her car, and walk across the lot to the displays in her sandals, we knew it was working. Now, people are ‘rock-a-holics.’ Some people visit our center every Saturday just to see the newest stone.” The experiential displays have played a major role as part of the Stone Center’s unique offering. “We’re one of the few places that’s a one-stop shop to select stone for the exterior of your home and your backyard,” Smitson says, “Where our company shines is in the way that we’re there when you build your project, and again The Stone Center’s newly built Westfield Center

when you add on or improve your outdoor living space.” The one stop shop philosophy has also applied to the Stone Center’s partnerships with custom home builders and StonePro certified landscape contractors. “Those partnerships work for us because they understand the value of the service level we can give them to help make them more profitable.” Smitson says. Not surprisingly, the Stone Center has mastered the art of specialized service. This is evident in its mission statement: “Driven to provide equitable solutions through integrity and teamwork.” Says Alan Drane, “It’s just as critical for us to help an end-user find the right solution as it is a contractor. We look at each project as an opportunity to establish a fair and equitable solution for the customer and the contractor.” Finding that solution is a journey. The sales staff at the Stone Center has years of experience in navigating the distance between wants, needs and budgets. “When people come to us, they’re overwhelmed with the choices, but they have a certain budget. They have an emotional investment in their homes, so they’re making an emotional decision,” Matt Riester, Director of Cut Stone and Architectural Sales says, “We’re really good at understanding both the emotional side and the budget side. We take the customer through the journey by helping them sort out the best choices for their home and work within their budget, which sometimes requires that we develop a custom blend. We help make the decision-making process less overwhelming.” The Stone Center has gone a step further in supporting the relationship between contractors and homeowners. About fifteen

years ago, it created a program called StonePro™. The program connects contractors with customers who are looking for a contractor that can get the job done right. For contractors, joining the StonePro™ program is generally by invitation, but all contractors are encouraged to inquire about it. Once selected, the contractors go through an evaluation by the Stone Center to ensure their projects meet ICPI guidelines and standards. “We developed the program because we wanted a win-win-win,” says Alan Drane, “We wanted to give the contractors the leads they need, and customers the service they need. Since they buy our products, we win too.” Through the years, the contractors participating in the StonePro™ program have developed a strong community amongst themselves. “These folks have a healthy competition between each other, and at the end of the day they know that they are competing with others on an “apples to apples basis.” Alan Drane says, “It is not uncommon for StonePro™ to subcontract work to another to make sure his/her customer gets the perfect result.” Having loyal partnerships requires showing appreciation, and the Stone Center knows how to show its customers how much they value their business. Every year, the Stone Center invites around 80 of its best customers to its Shots and Shells event at the Indianapolis Gun Club. It kicks off with a sporting clays shooting event followed by drinks and dinner, complete with fresh lobster flown in for the occasion. “We want to show our customers that we appreciate them,” says Riester, “At the same time, when we have the opportunity to mix with our customers outside of a business setting, it often leads to more loyalty.” Working with stone is serious business, but everyone at Stone Center knows how to have a lot of fun too. The Stone Center team started Curbside Cookouts around ten years ago as a fun way to build goodwill and mix with the crew at a job site. The men will load up the grill in the truck, bringing burgers, dogs, chips and drinks to a job site. The mission is to give the workers a break, and during the break, the Stone Center guys take the opportunity to make a YouTube video of the job’s progress. Proving that there’s never a dull moment with the Stone Center, the guys often interject humorous scenes with people pretending to sleep on the job and doing various wacky antics. “In the beginning, when we’d call and ask if we could show up, the foreman wasn’t always keen on us interrupting the work,” Alan Drane says, “But, then they saw the videos and realized how much we were promoting their work, and soon some of the builders were calling us asking when we were going to come out to do a Curbside Cookout with them.” HGTV might just be dialing their number soon! Get inspired to plan your next project with stone. Check out the Stone Center’s website at stonecenterofindiana. com to browse its vast selection. To get really inspired, visit the Stone Center’s Great Wall at 5272 E 65th Street, Indianapolis, or showroom near Westfield.

How to Turn Your Closet into

No matter how big or small your closet is, these DIY tips will make your space feel like your favorite boutique.

UNIFORM HANGERS: Easily the quickest way to transform a closet! Think about your favorite store for a minute. When you walk in you are drawn to the clothes, not distracted by a mix of assorted hangers holding items. So take the time to switch over to velvet hangers as they conserve space, preserve the shoulders of your tops and work for heavier items, too. ORGANIZE BY COLOR + STYLE: Figure out a system that works for you, but create a method in your closet to keep items sorted. Whether by style (tanks, short sleeve and long sleeve) or by housing each color together, this will make it infinitely easier to pick your outfit each day. PUT YOUR SHOES ON DISPLAY: Consider having one shoe facing in and one out, allowing you to see all the details of each pair. Also, toss those extra shoeboxes. Not only do they hide your shoes, but they take up a ton of valuable closet space. STUFF YOUR HANDBAGS + BOOTS: Ensure your purses keep their shape by stuffing them with newspaper or dust bags. For boots, roll a magazine inside to help it keep its shape in between wears. USE YOUR VERTICAL SPACE: Reevaluate the empty wall space in your closet. Invest in a few 3M Command Hooks to hang hats, jewelry or your robe. REGULARLY EDIT YOUR SPACE: Each season, take some time to rid your closet of items that are too worn, don’t work for your current lifestyle or are no longer items you gravitate toward. Be sure to find a great spot to donate them too if they’ve still got life to give.

HOME REALTY

ESSENTIAL STAGING ACCESSORIES for Different Home Styles by Phil Hotle

Whether your home is modern, traditional, farmhouse or rustic, it’s important to know how the appropriate accents will make it shine. It’s common knowledge that the purpose of staging a home is to neutralize its appearance so it will appeal to the widest audience of buyers. But then again, that’s not entirely true. Typically, there’s a style theme that ties the look together, whether it’s traditional, farmhouse, modern or another home style. Unless it is overly customized, you will likely want to stay true to your home’s current style rather than reinvent the look completely. But what accessories can you weave in to create a warm, inviting and polished space that emphasizes and celebrates the home’s style?

3 6 H AV E N

TRADITIONAL:

FARMHOUSE:

MODERN:

RUSTIC STYLE:

Classic and comfortable are signatures of the traditional look. Interiors tend to have a sense of familiarity and consistency with classic furniture and pieces that match. The placement of furnishing and accessories also tend to be symmetrical. Traditional doesn’t have to be boring, there is room to add in some modern twists without veering too far off course.

In a farmhouse motif, interiors have a lived-in, homey look that is full of charm. One sees the use of shiplap, white distressed kitchens and unique antiques – all elements that have become distinct to farmhouse chic décor. Adding a blanket or throw can make a room more inviting.

A modern home style is all about minimalism. Midcentury modern, a style popularized in the 1950’s but whose roots go back to the 20’s, is the focal point of the modern style. It tends to feature open spaces that are light, clean and organized. The style is referred to as “retro” – the opposite of modern. Accents and accessories should be minimal but impactful.

The rustic style exudes nature and organic warmth. Raw natural elements in architecture and weathered look in décor are key to achieving rustic charm. Such décor is all about emphasizing organic and earthly textiles – things that come straight from the Earth.

PRO TIP: When staging, you will likely want to stay true to your home’s current style rather than reinvent the look completely.

HOME ARTISANS OF INDIANA:

Create the Perfect

Outdoor Retreat by Christy Heitger-Ewing

Nothing says summer like a dream outdoor bar, complete with cool countertops, a crystal-clear speaker system, and a giant flat-screen TV telecasting the big game. But how does one go about selecting the best products that can withstand the elements? When choosing an outdoor countertop, Cory Kroger, CEO of Stone Artisans, suggests granite, a natural product that handles both heat and cold. (Synthetic products like Quartz, Corian, and laminates can crack and deteriorate.) Granite is competitively priced and also stands the test of time. “We’ve had customers who have taken the financial shortcut by purchasing something cheaper initially, but they end up spending more in the long run because the product needs to be repeatedly replaced,” says Kroger. The same is true when it comes to audiovisual equipment. Ray Rice, owner of Digital Sight & Sound, notes that while purchasing a television that’s rated for outdoor use will cost roughly 30-40 percent more, it’s a better alternative than moving an indoor television outside (and back in again). Not only is that a hassle, but should condensation enter the unit, it’s toast. “Plus, this way when you get a wacky 60-degree January day, you can catch that sporting “We’ve had customers event while inhaling some fresh air,” says Rice. Given that homeowners build outdoor living areas, so they can maximize relaxation and who have taken the entertainment time, investing in the right equipment makes sense. financial shortcut “You don’t build a spectacular outdoor living area and then put in an above-ground pool, by purchasing just as you wouldn’t install a beautiful in-ground pool and then plop down camp chairs around it,” says Rice. “[All your choices] need to be commiserate with one another.” something cheaper Rice recommends achieving seamless audio coverage by tying the audio into the television initially, but they end so that the sound can be heard from everywhere in the outdoor space. up spending more in “This way there are no loud or quiet spots,” says Rice, who also suggests investing in an outdoor weatherproof remote control. the long run because Navigating the pitfalls of planning an outdoor living space can be daunting, but it doesn’t the product needs have to be. ARDENT DESIGN:

New Interior Design Trends: WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? by Kristen Moorehouse

Ever wonder where the new interior design trends come from? How a color is deemed color of the year or why a certain aesthetic comes back into popularity after 50 years? Believe it or not, it comes from the Fashion Industry. The fashion industry is on the

cutting edge and is the leader for what is new and hip in the world of colors, textures, and materials. With almost 52 seasons a year, the fashion industry is constantly coming out with something new and is typically a year or two ahead of the interior design industry. For example, the top fashion trends in 2016 were velvet fabrics, throwback logos, luxe street wear, dusty pink, large statement earrings, casual and vintage denim…just to name a few. Which translated into 2017’s interior trends of exposed brick walls, vintage chairs, casual earth tones, cool geometrics, velvet headboards,

and denim blue and navy accent colors. In 2017 the fashion industry gave us stripes, soft pink (again), western prints, checks and plaids, patchwork, yellow, a little hint of the 80’s, and more comfortable work attire. From this, we are currently finding pink and rose gold home accents, 80’s and 90’s vibe prints and patterns, rustic wood furniture, plaid blankets and throws, and just a bit more casual feel overall that is sleek and less fussy. This year’s biggest fashion trends are that of large hats and scarves, metallics, animal prints, white suits, darker

denim, lots of lavender and a no stress, wear what you want, even if it doesn’t make sense trend. This means 2019 is all about your home being full of what you love even if it doesn’t fit the do’s and dont’s to a T. Layer lots of fun prints and textures, artistic patterned flooring and wallpaper, dark woods, metals of all tones, hides and animal print fabrics, purple accents, and yes…. black is coming back into the kitchen!! For help bringing color into your home, contact Ardent Design at 317-850-6145 or visit them online at ardentinterior.com.

ELECTRIC & LIGHTING

BURTNER ELECTRIC:

Switching from Fluorescent to

LED Lighting by Suzanne Huntzinger

LED lighting technology has been around for a while now, and most households have already replaced their incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs in lamps, light fixtures, and all other obvious places. But many homeowners have forgotten about the less obvious places like in the garage, the basement, the utility room or the closets. The lights in those spaces may be fluorescent and often have casing that must be opened, and some of it is tricky. So, instead of taking care of it right away, we walk by the area hundreds or thousands of times, only to remember it later and promise to change it the next time we get out the ladder. But there are a few very important reasons to quit putting off changing your fluorescent light bulbs to LED lighting in those areas. “LED lightbulbs do cost more,” says David Burtner, owner of Burtner Electric, “But, LED bulbs give you the same brightness as fluorescent bulbs, use less energy, which saves you energy costs in the long run." In addition to conserving energy and reducing costs, LED bulbs last a lot longer than fluorescent bulbs. If you’re not convinced yet, you might want to consider some more of Burtner’s “LED lightbulbs do advice. "Fluorescent bulbs can cause eye strain and headaches, but, cost more. But, LED LED's do not." bulbs give you the When LED lightbulb technology first became available, customers often objected to the shape of the bulb, and said the lighting gave off same brightness as a faint blue hue to the room. Now, LED lighting is available in soft fluorescent bulbs, white, bright white, cool white, and daylight. Burtner Electric can use less energy, save you the hassle of climbing and opening tricky casing to replace those lights. which saves you Call Burtner Electric today at 317-773-7663 for help in replacing energy costs in the your fluorescent lights to LED. OUTDOOR THEATER

DIGITAL SIGHT & SOUND:

Dive-in Movie by Ray Rice

Want to make an impact in your backyard? Add an outdoor theater and create the perfect entertaining area. Just imagine having your kids, their friends and family floating around watching the latest blockbuster movie with your new outdoor projection theater. That is BIG FUN! One of the main aspects in creating the perfect

outdoor theater, is selecting a projection screen designed specifically for outdoor use. Our recommendation from experience, is to install an electric retractable outdoor screen, which cost around $2500 installed. Because the retractable screen will be easy to use, you will use it more frequently. If you have a screen that is an ordeal to deploy, requiring you to drag it out of the garage, assemble it and install the support structure and, when finished, you must reverse the process, you will use it for far less than if you can simply flip a switch. In addition, a quality screen will produce a sharper image and brighter image, therefore a better experience for you. Another key factor in creating your outdoor theater

is selecting the correct projector. Outside ambient lighting will require a brighter projector than the customary inside projector. The size of your screen will determine the type of projector you’ll need. If you are using a small screen, 100" or less, you’ll most likely need a standard bright projector of about 2000 lumens. If choose a larger screen, you will need a brighter projector and it will be specific to your needs, so call us and we can help you with that process. To complete your outdoor theatre, you’ll want to select an audio system. When making this selection, make sure you choose one that can remain installed permanently. This will allow you to easily access the technology, while keeping

your backyard organized. We recommend selecting quality equipment that’s going to perform the way that you expect. GIVING BACK

GREATER INDY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY:

Home is the Key

If you are thumbing through this latest edition of Haven, you would probably agree with the statement, “Home is the Key.” Our homes are foundational to our well-being; it is where memories are made, where community is formed, where we feel a sense of stability and independence. For more than 30 years, Habitat for Humanity has worked with Greater Indianapolis families to achieve their dream of homeownership. Habitat homeowners crave stability and community; it’s why they work so hard for this opportunity! Families complete their hours of homebuyer education and volunteering all while maintaining their income (and sometimes more than one job!), eagerly dedicating themselves to their dream of homeownership. And they aren’t alone. Volunteers, many from professional building trades represented in this magazine, work alongside them on the journey. We all want a home to be proud of, we all want community, we all want to feel safe, we all want to feel connected to something bigger than ourselves. When we assist in creating a strong community for someone, we realize we are strengthening the same community for ourselves. This spring, comprehensive research was released by the Sagamore Institute to evaluate Greater Indy Habitat’s impact over our 30 years of work. The desire was to better understand what pieces of Habitat homeownership benefit families, and how exactly. In the study, homeowners overwhelmingly shared that after moving into their home, quality of life improved across the board. Some key findings showed that Habitat homeowners felt and experienced:  Greater control of their lives  Less emotional stress  A feeling of hope for the future  Greater stability  Spiritual growth

Our community has come together to provide this opportunity for nearly 600 families in the Greater Indianapolis area. This is community work. Would you like to be a part of our upcoming work? Learn how you can help by visiting indyhabitat.org or indyrestore.com. OUTDOOR LIVING & LANDSCAPE

ALLISONVILLE NURSERY GARDEN & HOME:

S TAY C O O L How to make the most of your outdoor living areas during the summer heat. by David Brandon-Friedman

With spring rapidly transitioning into summer, it is time to consider how to get the most out of your outdoor living areas throughout the warmer months, and Allisonville Nursery, Garden & Home has some great ideas to get you started. The first consideration is how to keep your spaces cool as the temperatures rise. Depending on your area, consider adding a shade tree. Our state tree, the tulip poplar, is a fast-growing shade tree that will help cool down your patio with its broad leaves. If your outdoor space will not accommodate large shade trees, think about using patio trees in decorative planters placed strategically to maximize shaded areas. Ornamental trees, such as a peach or redbud are great options. The Rising Sun Redbud provides unique color throughout the entire summer with leaves that begin as a red color, transition to orange, then yellow, and ultimately settle into a bright chartreuse. While shade will help with cooling off your outdoor spaces, nothing beats the heat like an ice-cold beverage. A cooler that lets you down with melted ice is no help, but Yeti has some

of the best coolers on the market that will keep you feeling refreshed for days. Yeti cups, called Ramblers, will keep your drinks cold while you enjoy the summer months. Perfect for everyone in the family, a large Yeti Rambler will perfectly hold a pint of your favorite ice cream! Another way to make your outdoor spaces comfortable is to keep mosquitoes and other annoying bugs at bay by using scented plants in containers and garden beds around your patio. Start with strong scents like citronella geraniums and lemongrass, in containers, then add your favorite flowers in around them. Marigolds will provide bright color, as well as a strong defense against pests. In gardens, lavender, bee balm, and cedar will work wonders. Meanwhile, in your kitchen herb garden, fragrant herbs like basil, rosemary, thyme, mint, and sage will help deter flying pests. Ultimately, your outdoor space should be an extension of your home. Try adding a gorgeous, outdoor rug to bring your space together by making it feel homey while protecting your feet from hot pavement or wood. Finally, adding personal touches like decorative lanterns, pillows, and outdoor candles can help you achieve this effect – just be careful that you don’t use artificial flame candles that are not rated for outdoor use, as they can melt in the sun. With just a few easy additions to your outdoor space, you’ll be ready to relax and make the most ALLISONVILLE NURSERY GARDEN & HOME of your summer! WINDOWS & DOORS

SCENIC DOORS are very hot now. They make a big statement, and allow homeowners to enjoy an indoor/outdoor al fresco feel.

FRANKLIN WINDOW & DOOR:

Slide Your Concerns Away With Marvin

SCENIC DOORS By Matt Keating

5 2 H AV E N

One of the many wonderful things about summer is enjoying the endless beautiful days that seem to last forever. When you look out your doors, you take in all the gorgeous, green scenery summer has to offer. When you open a Marvin Scenic Door in your house, you not only look out at the outdoor beauty, you open up your entire home. Any concerns you have just slide away with Marvin Scenic Doors. “Scenic doors are very hot now,” says Cori Brown, CEO, Window & Door Designer of Franklin Window & Door. “They make a big statement, and some homeowners enjoy an indoor/outdoor al fresco feel.” Three scenic ways to open up your house are Ultimate Multi-Slide; Ultimate Lift and Slide; and Ultimate Bi-Fold Doors, all from Marvin Scenic Doors. They are designed to connect open, spacious interior living with open, spacious exterior living. You get the best of both worlds. MULTI-SLIDE DOORS The panoramic Ultimate Multi-Slide Door from Marvin Doors gives homeowners the ability to acquire a whole new view. When they slide open their doors, homeowners get fresh air, expansive views, and warm, natural light. The Ultimate Multi-Slide Door has an unmatched 0.28 U-Factor for energy efficiency. It is available in six panel unidirectional and ten panel bi-parting. “Some of the Ultimate Multi-Slide Features include Automatic Control, which are highly convenient,” Cori says. “You can open or close the Multi-Slide Doors with a wall-mounted control or hand -held remote touchpad controls.” They can be adapted to interface with home automation and smart phone technologies. “There is a motorized system that allows that,” Cori says. Also: Because it’s a Marvin option, factory prep for motorization streamlines installation. Ultimate Multi-Slide Doors are also made in Pocket or Stacked configurations. With a Pocket configuration, panels slide into wall openings, completely disappearing from view. “These Scenic doors disappear into the wall,” Cori says. “Homeowners love them.” With a Stacked Configuration, door panels slide and stack neatly within the door frame. Both designs are available with an optional Scenic Door Ultimate Sliding Screen.

GUEST SPEAKER AND RECENT HIRE Franklin Window & Door’s COO and New Construction Specialist Scott Brown will be a guest speaker at Window & Door Dealer Days in Las Vegas. He will be speaking about Residential Arts and Workforce Development; about bringing high school graduates, and adults, into the Window & Door Industry, and about how they can work in other residential trade and businesses as well. Franklin Window & Door recently hired Shady Hanna (pictured), a 2018 Carmel High School graduate, as a Labor Installed Apprentice.

BI-FOLD DOORS Marvin Ultimate Bi-Fold Doors offer elegant solutions for indoor/ outdoor luxury living, by opening wide. They have more glass which makes you feel like you are outdoors, while enjoying the cool comforts of your interior. A single outswing active access panel makes it easy for homeowners to handle with a hardware system that’s designed for outdoor residential and light commercial folding door applications. “Homeowners can choose from performance, low profile and floor channel sill options,“ Cori says. “The performance sill in the Bi-Fold Doors are thermal, efficient, and durable.” One to sixteen panels can hold openings as large as 55 feet wide by 10 feet high. If you don’t want to open the entire door every time you walk outside, a single outswing active access panel is an option.

SHADY HANNA

ULTIMATE LIFT AND SLIDE DOORS If you are looking for a seamless transition from exterior to interior, the Marvin Ultimate Lift and Slide Doors give you a clean and clear view with little operation involved. They are available with openings up to 48 feet wide and 12 feet high, with recessed or flush sills. Pocket and Stacked configurations give homeowners the flexibility to fit their individual needs. It’s a smart way to connect your interior with the beauty of your landscape.

CUSTOM BUILDLING & REMODELING

HOSS HOMES:

Materials Built to Last by Matt Keating

Using superior materials during a home build is one of the keys to long term success. Just ask Nigel Hoss, a builder with Hoss Building Group. “At Hoss Homes, we take pride in the work we do, and strive to make sure our clients are satisfied with our work,” Hoss said. “A lot of real estate brokers take note that we did the work on the houses they are selling. That’s a great feeling, and we stress that we use the best materials during a build, such as Marvin Windows.” Marvin Windows endeavors to push design to its limits in aesthetics, function and durability. Their windows are preferred for new construction and are designed for unprecedented performance and outstanding aesthetics. Over the years, Marvin has built a strong reputation. The same can be said for Hoss Homes. For over 40 years, Hoss Homes has been building state of the art custom residential properties in Central Indiana. They are known for their quality work and have perfected the art of custom home building.

We apply products not by force of habit, but where they’re best for a particular home.” Steve Hoss, president of Hoss Homes, has a strong reputation for quality, and an enthusiastic eye for detail, that has helped him, and his company grow and thrive over the years.
